Electric Vehicle Number Plate Labels
The Northern Territory is working towards adopting the national requirements for number plate labelling for vehicles powered by alternative fuels.
The primary objective is to support emergency services to identity electric vehicles during emergency response situations. It is essential that emergency services can readily identify these vehicles and take action to properly address risks unique to the respective fuel type.
The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics is progressing regulatory amendments and is working towards implementing the new requirements with a target of early 2023. The Department will work with the MTA to communicate with our members about the changes and to implement them with as little impact on businesses and the community as possible.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE CONCESSIONS
The NT Government is taking the next steps towards a renewable future by reducing registration and stamp duty fees for plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) from 1 July 2022 to June 2027.
STAMP DUTY
Stamp duty is currently calculated at 3% of the vehicle purchase price. This incentive means that no stamp duty will be paid on up to $50 000 of the purchase price, representing a saving of up to $1500.
REGISTRATION
The registration component of the registration fee for EVs will be waived for the five years, representing an annual saving of $91 for a light vehicle. Motor Accidents Compensation (MAC) charges including GST and administration fee still apply.
