Mastering MOMents of Mindfulness

Ah, the life of a busy mom – a delightful blend of chaos, laughter, and endless to-do lists. Our days are a symphony of chaos whether it’s diapers, doctor’s visits, school runs, meal prep, business meetings or bedtime stories. But in the middle of the hustle and bustle, I’ve learned to embrace the art of relaxation in the most unexpected places, where stealing moments of tranquility has become a safe place.

You see, for us momtrepreneurs, rest and relaxation doesn’t always come in the form of lavish spa days or weekend getaways (though, let’s be honest, those are absolute heaven when they happen!). No, it’s the simple, everyday moments that serve as our sanctuary in the chaos.

Picture this: It’s a sunny Saturday morning, and the birds are chirping outside. While some may dream of sleeping in, my idea of bliss begins with an early morning cup of coffee. That first sip, savoured in the silence of the kitchen before anyone else gets up, sets the tone for the day ahead.

But let’s not underestimate the power of the ordinary, like a trip to the supermarket . It’s a mini escape, where you can wander the aisles in solitude, indulge in the guilty pleasure of spending way too long perusing the latest flavours of ice cream, or debating between brands of peanut butter.

And then there’s the parked car in the garage – the ultimate mom sanctuary. It’s where I steal a few precious moments of peace and quiet, basking in the solitude before rejoining the chaos of family life. Sometimes I catch up on emails or listen to a few minutes of my favorite podcast, and other times, I simply take a few deep breaths. These stolen moments are pure gold in a busy mom’s day.

Stuck in tra c? Turn the radio up. I’m not talking about talk radio! Belt out your favourite tunes like a diva in concert. Adele? Check. Whitney? Absolutely. Release your inhibitions and sing like there’s no one hearing you. The truth is, they can’t hear you. And for those seeing you, I promise you that you’ll bring a smile to their face… and yours.

And let’s not forget the sacred ritual of taking long in the bathroom . For many moms, this is our private oasis, where we can indulge in a few moments of uninterrupted solitude. From leisurely bubble baths to impromptu dance parties (because why not?), the bathroom can be our haven of relaxation smack in the middle of the daily grind.

So, dear mom, let’s raise our coffee mugs (or wine glasses, depending on the time of day) to the art of finding joy in the everyday chaos. Embrace the art of stolen MOMents. They’re hidden in plain sight—in the mundane, the chaotic, and the unexpected. After all, in a world that never stops spinning, it’s these simple moments of relaxation that keep us grounded, sane, and ohso-very tired, but happy.

Dr. Trisha Bailey has a veritable ‘rags to riches’ story taking her from poverty in rural St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, to the wealthy expanses of a growing billion-dollar empire currently spanning seven U.S. states. She has survived childhood trauma, sexual abuse and domestic violence, carrying the weight of a heavy past with grace and elegance.

While Trisha’s ascent to billionaire status has caught numerous headlines across the world, (she insisted that I call her Trisha,) for me, it’s her role as a mother to her five children that truly illuminates the depth of her character. Overcoming societal pressures and navigating the nuances of single parenting, Trisha stands as a beacon of resilience and grace, pouring unwavering love and wisdom into her children's lives.

Society has its own set of rules that dictate the ‘right way’ to do things. But many of the mothers I have come to admire are rewriting parenting narratives, for their individual families, and also for a wider understanding of motherhood and its complexities. We want and deserve it all - happiness at home, joy with children, success in business, wealth and good health.

Trisha’s courage in accepting the past, redefining the present, and building a future for her and her family has motivated me to dig even deeper. Her book Unbroken: The Triumphant Story of a Woman's Journey is both painful and poignant, and it opens the doorway of discovery to what makes Trisha Bailey

A Mom in a Billion.

The revelation that her financial status had ascended to the realm of billionaires wasn’t the earth-shattering moment that one would expect. “I don’t even know if it’s sunk in yet”, she laughs while reminding me that her billionaire status is still fairly new. Her eyes disappear into the recesses of her laughter, and over the two days of spending time with Trisha, I would learn that her laughter is her signature in communication. “My trust attorney told me that he could no longer service my account as I was now beyond his capacity.” That is how she learned that she was a newly minted member of the Billionaire’s Club.

“The truth is, the only di fference for me now is the things that I can a fford. The things I value are definitely not money. I enjoy the luxuries of life, but I definitely do not value money or material things. Material things come and go, and I’ve been through enough struggles to know that as quickly as He gives you something, God can take it away. So I place value in my relationships, with God, my family and my friends.”

Having money means having freedom. Knowing that you have the freedom to do the things you like and to go to the places you want, is a beautiful feeling. And for Dr. Bailey, this status is a testament to her resilience and entrepreneurial spirit, that gives her the freedom to spend time with her children and her family as she desires. ”I can give more,” Trisha states definitively. “More time and more money.”

Trisha is on record as having given the largest donation in history to her alma mater, The University of Connecticut. She gifted her former school’s track and field program with a $500,000 donation that prevented the program’s cancellation, and later funded the $15 million Bailey Student Athlete Success Center. “Athletics saved my life, and I am proud to be able to send the elevator back down.”

Like many other ‘rags to riches’ stories, from humble beginnings to scaling the heights of financial achievement, Dr. Bailey' s ascent to the Billionaire' s Club is a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere, proving that with dedication, perseverance, and a vision, anything is possible.

“ MY RESPONSIBILITY TO MY CHILDREN IS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE EMOTIONALLY BALANCED, HAPPY AND PROGRESSIVE, AND THAT THEY EXCEL IN WHATEVER THEY ARE DOING.”

ON FRIENDSHIP.

How does Trisha know who is safe to allow into her space? People will enter your life with di fferent motives and agendas. How do you judge who is real and who isn’t?

“I give everyone around me 100% trust and it is their responsibility to keep that trust. I may be jovial and tons of fun to be around, but I pay attention to everything. Once you start getting to know them, people will tell you who they are - we just need to pay attention. No! there is no application and vetting process!” Trisha exclaims while laughing at my question about how she knows who is real and who isn’t? “My spiritual compass is strong and I rely on it as you would a moral compass.” She admits to developing a strong sense of discernment, and loves that the people who form her core group of friends are positive, uplifting, engaging and supportive. “Listen, I don’t want to be alone in this space, so if you are with me, we have to support each other.”

From her oldest friendship of over 30 years, to the most recent of 4 years, Trisha the nurturer, cherishes these relationships based on shared values and like-minded goals. Yes, they have fun together, but they keep each other ‘in check’ regularly. Girlfriends are an important part of the female survival process, acting as towers of support, confidantes, and sources of laughter and strength during all that life throws our way.

ON BEING JUST MOMMY.

Her role raising children has no bearing on whether or not she secured that contract at work today. To her 5 children, the boardroom mogul and suave deal-maker, is just Mommy.

Despite the organized support of sta ff and team members all around, Trisha has intentionally managed to remain dutifully involved with each of her children. Maintaining a physical presence requires balance with demands of work travel, o ce time and social obligations. But she does it all… well. She lists open communication and active listening as tools she can’t do without. “My responsibility to my children is to make sure that they are emotionally balanced, happy and progressive, and that they excel in whatever they are doing.”

At age 5, Ocean is her youngest child, and like all his siblings, has a commanding understanding of money. “I deliberately teach my children early on the things that many parents wait to discuss. Everything that my children have, they’ve had to work for - including Ocean.” She laughs when recalling a time when he came to her asking for money, to which she responded - “Give you some money? Did you work for it?” When his mom explained that money came from working for it, Ocean went to the kitchen and began mopping the floor. “I didn’t care that he made a complete mess”, Trisha laughs, “I just loved that he understood the concept and the nature of the exchange.”

“I HAVE MADE SURE TO TEACH MY CHILDREN... WE ARE NOT ENTITLED TO WHAT WE HAVE NOT WORKED FOR.”

Whenever her children want something, they have to do something to get it. “There are so many people in this world that think you should just give them - that they don’t have to do anything, but you should just give. I’m not like that and I have made sure to teach my children that as well. We are not entitled to what we have not worked for.” Insisting that her children would not have a ‘give me’ mentality, this for Trisha is the beginning of financial literacy; and financial literacy is one of the tenets of success for this mogul mom.

She speaks with pride about her two older daughters, Kashena 25, and Natalia 22, who are ‘super disciplined with money’. “I have taught my children to save, to invest and most importantly, to give back.”

Kashena, whose studies will see her entering the medical field, describes her mother as a daily example of discipline and determination. “One valuable lesson I have learnt from my mother’s journey is understanding and knowing your purpose. In her many hardships, she recognized her strengths, talents, and skills. Mummy has a positive attitude about almost everything, and I think that’s

what allowed her to create the life she’s always dreamed about.” In reflecting on the relationship with her mother, Kashena speaks passionately about her mother’s love and care. “My mom has cared deeply for everyone she has encountered with grace, and as I pursue my career as a medical doctor, I plan to extend the same compassion towards my patients.” Kashena’s pride for her mother is clear. “My mom is my biggest support system and the best example of the phrase, ‘life is what you make it’. Her success has been the highest inspiration for me to finish my academic journey.”

Like parent-child relationships everywhere, Natalia would come to appreciate many of the lessons taught along the way…eventually. “As a young person, it was initially di cult to accept but, over time, I came to understand the truth of my mother’s words. I’ve developed a heightened appreciation for my achievements.” Natalia recalls how her mother would speak with her about the challenges faced by black women in the American workplace. “Being told that I had to exert twice the effort of a white woman and four times the effort of a white man, was daunting,” but Natalia credits her mother with helping her to recognize that hard work holds greater value,

despite the presence of obstacles. Today, Trisha wishes that she had made decisions like those made by her daughter Natalia. “She’s so methodical, responsible and wise - she impresses me.”

The ultimate goal in parenting is to raise children who are well-balanced, emotionally intelligent, and who are functioning members of society. “My children know that I have worked so hard to get us to the place where they don’t have to work as hard as I did, but I also need to make sure that they’re not going to ‘f’ up my money!” Trisha is as candid as she is jovial. Not one to mince her words - she gives authenticity and jokes at the same time.

We speak about discipline as an important pillar for parents to build early on the journey to create generational wealth. Trisha is adamant - “Parents must first get financially literate, and it’s so much easier today because there are resources everywhere.”

Parents must understand money, in order to teach our children to understand money, so that the cycle of wealth has longevity and endurance. “Speak to your children about the importance of saving, and the discipline required to achieve financial goals,” she shares. And by discipline, Trisha is referring to the simple, yet often di cult

act of honouring commitments and sticking to goals and plans. “If you commit to saving $10 a week, do it despite the shoes you wanted going on a one-time sale for $7. It’s the discipline applied to small things that will help us to succeed when the big things come our way.” Ultimately, by imparting essential lessons in financial discipline from an early age, parents equip their children with some useful tools to pave the way for a future of financial stability and success. “Just because I have money, doesn’t automatically mean that my children will have money. It’s something they have to learn, and I’m their best teacher,” Trisha is soft yet serious, as she shares these nuggets of wisdom.

Gabriel at age 15, is the super intellect of the family, oftentimes, amazing his mom with thoughts and concepts that cause her to step back and be awed! When asked to share something that his mother has taught him that he applies to be successful at school or otherwise, he said “No matter how seemingly small it is, put 110% into anything you do.” Yes, Gabriel said seemingly. The way he speaks tells the tale of a young man far wiser than his age, and almost superior in how he processes his thoughts and emotions. For Trisha and his siblings, Gabriel is a human compass, guiding and steering, during moments when they lose focus and go off-course.

For moms everywhere, parenting can be as challenging as it is rewarding, but when your teen son tells you that he ‘admires how you put every emotion into your work, like a refined flame to fuel your life’, you know you must be doing something right.

Kayla now, is very protective of her mother. When her friends get excited about her mom’s status, she remains cool under pressure and will simply say, ‘she’s just my mom’. At 9, she is una ffected by the voice of popular opinion and has a quiet strength that I call her ‘horsepower’. Her love of horses has taught her to just ‘be herself’. I remember reading many years ago that horses have a remarkable ability to impart wisdom, and little Kayla’s calming presence proves this to me. Maybe it’s their majestic stature and graceful presence that command respect and truly inspire.

For a young girl on the cusp of adolescence, a passion for horses can evoke a sense of empowerment and courage, especially during challenging times at school. As she spends time with these magnificent creatures, she learns that just like them, she too can overcome obstacles. Trisha’s pre-teen daughter gives credit to her equine friends for unearthing her brave side. “I feel really free whenever I’m with my horses. There is something about riding that makes me feel that I can just be me and express myself freely.” When things are tough at school, Kayla is able to rely on her ‘horsepower’ which she says has helped her concentration and taught her to remain focused on her academic responsibilities. “I really do cherish my horseback riding experiences,” she shares.

And through it all, Trisha is there to navigate the challenges that come with each stage of the parenting journey. With their mother’s presence comforting like the gentle nudge of a horse's nose, or the reassuring rhythm of their hoo eats, her children discover the importance of resilience and determination.

We speak about the di fferences in her relationship with her children’s fathers and the relationships that they have with their respective children. Ocean’s dad, who features at the beginning of her book, is a great father. “If you see us together, you would never in a kazillion years know that we once had a toxic relationship.”

I am captured by Trisha’s maturity to rise above the fray of broken unions, to an elevated place of positive parenting. The truth

Looking back, I realized that my mother was trying to create a perfect family unity, a façade that masked the harsh realities of our home life. Unbroken, p61

is, so many of our children get caught in the middle of parental fracas, and Trisha is showing us that regardless of our personal stories, the responsibility to separate those emotions is entirely up to us as parents. “I don’t believe that the absence of their fathers has a ffected them negatively. My children are well-adjusted. I tried my very best to ensure that they have positive, disciplined structures in place so that they want for nothing, and that they always feel safe.”

ON BEING UNBROKEN.

I had to admit to Trisha that her book took me longer to read than I had expected. It got hard for me to absorb, and I had to take mental breaks. I remember getting to a part where I didn’t even realize that I was crying until I noticed that the page of the book was wet with my tears. I immediately closed the book, and called my own teen daughter. I was traveling at the time and was so far away from my child that I actually felt scared. I didn’t even think that my questions may have been abrupt enough to scare her too, but in that moment, I needed to hear from her that she was ok.

What are the signs that a mother should look for in her role as protector of her child? Trisha shares her teenaged vantage point in her book in a way that would cause any mother to stop and think. As a mother, my eyes were opened to the fact that we can miss the signs. “The truth is that I am paranoid when it comes to my children, and I trust no one.” Sleepovers for Trisha’s children? Nope, no, never. It remains an unfortunate fact that many children who are sexually abused, are exposed to this trauma by someone they know. “I am vigilant and there is no time when I’m like ‘ok, I can breathe now’… I don’t care who it is, I’m always thinking WHAT IF?”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, (Sexual Assault of Young Children as Reported to Law Enforcement. 2000) many perpetrators who sexually abuse children are in positions of trust—93% of child sexual assault victims know the perpetrator. This includes family members, members of faith communities, coaches, teachers, and other helping professionals. “I never want my children to ever have to experience anything like what I did, because no child should ever have to.” The pause in our

“IF THEY ARE NOT SHARING WITH ME, I CAN’T GUIDE THEM.”

conversation is heavy, but Trisha is eager to continue. She has very open conversations with her kids. When is the right time to start speaking with your children about these ‘uncomfortable situations’? “Oh gosh… as early as possible.” Having started from as early as two, Trisha made it clear to her children that no one is to touch their privates. A conversation that many parents have with their children takes on a much deeper meaning for this mother who knows too well the devastating effects of abuse.

Trisha’s instinct to shield her children from harm while still allowing them to learn from their own experiences, is bolstered by knowing that she has provided them a solid foundation built on acceptance, forgiveness and the beauty of new beginnings.

Successful conversations about right and wrong touch with a 3-year-old child, a 9-year-old child or a 15-year-old child, depend largely on age appropriateness and understanding, and these elements require open communication. “I am blunt yet also balanced, with my children. I don’t believe in sheltering them too much, and I also don’t expose them too much to what they can’t absorb and process.”

“I cuss around my kids. They’re gonna hear it out there, and they’re also going to do it. My son Gabriel is at the age where he will cuss. I know many other parents would have something to say about it, but I’m not that mom. I think that the only way to build trust with people is by allowing them to be authentically themselves. I allow my kids to be just that; morally sound and responsible with their decision-making - that way, I can guide them. If they are not sharing with me, I can’t guide them.” For Trisha, allowing her children to share openly with her, prevents them sharing half a story which would only elicit incomplete advice. But it goes both ways for her. “I share with them too.”

Her book she admits, is not appropriate for children under 14, but can be a powerful tool for teenagers to identify and avoid the pitfalls

For goodness’ sake, I was the daughter of a woman who once spent her evening cleaning houses to make ends meet. Knowing I could go from a girl running barefoot in the mountainous terrains of Jamaica, to a woman making millions, brought a sense of pride. Unbroken, p144

of predators, and for parents, especially mothers, to face head-on, the fear and vulnerability that can come with raising children in a world where abuse is a pervasive issue. “I can’t overemphasize how important it is to be vigilant,” Trisha is emphatic about this. Because it’s not easy to speak about, there is no other way to recognize signs of abuse in our children. So be vigilant.

ON LOOKING FOR LOVE.

Having been involved in multiple abusive relationships, Trisha was able to accept that she ‘kept choosing the same person over and over again, only in di fferent bodies each time. My question to Trisha was a simple one. Why? But her answer was even simpler. “Love. I was looking for love. But I was looking in all the wrong places.”

For Trisha, going through sexual trauma especially at such a young age and stage, made her yearn to be loved and cared for. “You want so badly to know love. All you want is to be emotionally and mentally taken care of.” When that came along and showed this beautiful, bright budding business woman what she thought was love, she grasped at it each time without question. And Trisha was not unlike countless women who find themselves in such relationships, also sharing similar repetitive patterns that are often di cult to break.

So how is that cycle broken for Trisha, her children and a world of family, friends and fans who look up to her as an inspiration? “I had to truly heal because I was very angry. I had tried all types of therapies - church, the bible, counseling sessions … but EMDR genuinely helped the hurt.” She praises EMDR Therapy as the catalyst that allowed her to heal.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a mental health treatment technique that involves moving your eyes a specific way while you process traumatic

memories. EMDR's goal is to help you heal from trauma or other distressing life experiences.“I tried every possible treatment known to man! But the only true breakthrough for me was EMDR. This is how I can now talk about my trauma in full detail and not feel broken.”

Since the publication of her book, many years after her traumatic experiences as a teen, her mother learned of the gruesome details her daughter Trisha had been through. “...and EMDR helped me to not need my mother’s apology.”

After her therapy, Trisha started dating normally. “I didn’t even know that when you start dating, that you’re supposed to be a little bit nervous”, she laughs. “I never evaluated before. Once I thought he loved me, I just jumped right in.”

A 2018 University of Michigan study found that intimate partner violence including physical and sexual violence and threats, stalking and coercive tactics, affects up to one in three women in the United States, with huge social and financial repercussions. P230

MIMIC, NOT MENTOR.

How does mentorship play a role in supporting mothers who are actively parenting while pursuing their entrepreneurial goals?

Trisha never had a mentor per se, but she does recommend taking di fferent things from di fferent people. Instead of selecting that one person, Trisha suggests identifying qualities that you admire in di fferent people and adopting and mimicking those qualities. While the principle can also be applied to the professional side of life, the example she cites applies to parenting.

“I always wanted to be a great mom,” she explains. Her undergraduate degree is in Human Behavior and Family Relations, with a concentration in Early Child Development, so Trisha is armed with the theoretical understanding of what being a good mother ‘should look like’. “I paid attention to the things that I saw in other mothers that I admired, and I was intentional in using those tools to help me to become a better mom.” And becoming that better mother for Trisha also includes involving her children at each step along the way. “Because our children are going to mimic our behaviour, whether we’re doing good or bad.”

Mimicking multiple people and patterns can provide a flexible and adaptable approach to learning and growth. While a single mentor offers personalized guidance and support based on their own experiences and perspectives, mimicking others allows individuals to draw from a diverse range of role models and sources of inspiration.

By observing, analyzing, and emulating multiple people, both personally and professionally, we can gain new skills and insights that contribute to success. We also have the opportunity to learn how to develop our independence, our ability to change.

Yes, mentorship is important, and combined with the emotional support of someone who ‘gets it’, is a win-win for any Bossmom. Trisha’s advice? “Find that person in your circle who will be willing to pick up the phone when you call crying at 3 in the morning, because there will be days when you will need them.”

ON FINDING INSPIRATION.

Reflecting on her remarkable journey, we are reminded that ‘BossMom greatness’ is not only reserved for a select few. Despite the challenges she faced, Trisha' s story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in oneself. Read her book, so that you get a better understanding of what she’s been through - it’s no joke. I’m hearing Buju Banton’s song as I write these words - “It’s not an easy road. Many see the glamour and the glitter and think a bed of rose.”

While our individual paths may di ffer, we are united by a shared aspiration: to raise exceptional children and build successful businesses. Like Trisha, we encounter obstacles, fears, and uncertainties along the way. Her personal journey underscores the transformative power of healing and self-discovery. Whether

through EMDR therapy or other means, we recognize the importance of confronting our past traumas and overcoming our fears to unlock our fullest potential as mothers and entrepreneurs. Her story should remind every mother-in-business, regardless of where we are in our BossMom journey, that we already have the strength to rise above our limitations and create our own paths to greatness.

To all the BossMoms reading this, as we navigate the complexities of balancing family and career, let us pull some energy from Trisha' s grit and resilience, embrace the challenges as opportunities for growth, and let us never waver in our pursuit of excellence. I dare you to dream big, believe in yourself, and never underestimate the power of your own strength.

We (myself included) want to create a future of boundless possibilities for ourselves and our children. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable. Let' s start counting… one billion wishes at a time.

10 Top Tips for Summer Travel with Children

As a former Flight Attendant and now a mom to two little adventurers, I’ve learned a thing or two about surviving summer vacations with young children. Whether you’re planning a beach getaway, a road trip, or a visit to Grandma’s house, these tips will help you keep your sanity intact and create lasting memories.

Remember, summer travel with kids is about more than just the destination—it’s about the journey. So pack your patience, embrace the chaos, and savour every sticky popsicle moment.

1. PLAN AHEAD, BUT BE FLEXIBLE

Preparation is key! Research your destination, book accommodations, and create an itinerary. But remember, kids thrive on spontaneity. Leave room for unexpected detours and magical moments.

Pack smart. Make a checklist of essentials like diapers, wipes, and sunscreen. Don’t forget their favorite stu ffed animals or security blankets — those are non-negotiable!

2. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Avoid peak travel times. Early mornings or late evenings are your best bet. Kids are less cranky, and you’ll dodge crowds. Naptime ninja. Plan activities around nap schedules. A well-rested child is a happy traveler.

3. SNACKS, SNACKS, SNACKS!

Hangry meltdowns - prevent them by packing a variety of healthy snacks. Think fruit slices, cheese sticks, and whole-grain crackers. Be sure to keep water bottles handy, because dehydration can turn a delightful day into a downright disaster faster than you can imagine.

4.ENTERTAINMENT ON-THE-GO

Screen time strategy. Load up tablets with educational apps and their favorite shows. But also encourage old-school fun—colouring books, travel-sized board games, and storytelling. Audiobooks and sing-alongs. Turn car rides into mini adventures. Sing “Wheels on the Bus” like you’re auditioning for Broadway!

5. SAFETY FIRST

Car seat vigilance. Buckle up, little ones! Ensure car seats are correctly installed and age-appropriate. Take sun protection seriously. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are your armour against UV rays. Even babies need shade.

6.CHOOSE KID-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATIONS

Family-friendly hotels. Look for places with pools, play areas, and kid menus. Bonus points if they offer babysitting services! Vacation rentals. Having a kitchenette means you can whip up midnight snacks or warm milk.

7.

BE A PACKING PRO

Lighten your load. Pack versatile clothing and do laundry on the go. Kids don’t care about fashion; they just want to splash in puddles. Emergency kit. Band-aids, fever reducers, and a superherothemed ice pack. Because booboos happen.

8.EMBRACE THE SLOW PACE

Less is always more. Don’t cram too many activities into a day. Kids need downtime to process all the new experiences.

Chase butterflies. Sometimes the best memories are made when you’re not rushing from one attraction to another.

9.

INVOLVE THEM IN DECISIONMAKING

Tiny travel planners. Let them choose an activity or a restaurant. Their enthusiasm will surprise you. Map it out. Show them the route and explain where you’re going. Kids love feeling like explorers.

10.

CAPTURE THE MAGIC

Snap away. Document the giggles, sandcastles, and ice cream smiles. These moments are fleeting.

Create a travel journal. Encourage your older child to write or draw about their adventures. It’s a keepsake they’ll cherish.

Beyond Breadwinning: Exploring the Role of the Involved

Father

He would get the best cuts of meat served in a separate plate alongside two other dishes containing sautéed vegetables and boiled ground provisions steeped in ‘pot water’ which he’d down before tucking into the food. Roundtable dinnertime was religiously 6:00pm at the Henry’s residence and none could dare eat before ‘Papa’ was home. After toiling as a cattle-ranchinghardware-owning-haulage contractor from sunrise to sunset, this scene, dotingly prepared by my homemaker grandmother, awaited my grandfather nightly. This scene shaped my early experience of what it meant to be a breadwinner.

Samuel Henry of blessed memory was a hard nut to crack, a staunch catholic who’d raised sons and daughters, and indeed their off spring, in fear… to know they’re loved without actually having them hear him say so; to leave child rearing and nurturing to ‘mama’ while he puts food on her table, and clothes on our backs.

Two generations later, here I am, married with one daughter— and satisfyingly so—trying to define manhood and breadwinning on my own terms sans driving a mac truck or wrangling bulls for a living. What to me then was my grandfather making the best of what he knew then, pales in comparison to what it means to be a man now.

The traditional schools of thought around Caribbean fathers being solely providers of income is changing. Eschew thoughts of mums being the only ones to execute caring and nurturing duties while dads focus on the household’s finances. Atop being a breadwinner, increasingly, dads nowadays are expected to offer more than just financial support, they need to contribute to children’s physical and emotional development, too.

Various studies and research conducted recently in the Caribbean provide insight into the changing role of fathers and the advantages of their engagement for the growth and development of their children. Research pioneered by the late Professor Barry Chevannes and lecture and child advocate Janet Brown, published in the Caribbean Journal of Psychology indicates that father-involvement is essential for fostering children’s academic success, cognitive development, and socioemotional well-being. Though much of Brown and Chevannes’ research, primarily around the stigmas of manhood in Caribbean society still ring true, nearly 30 years on, the role of the father is undergoing an evolution of sorts.

Contrary to stereotypes, Caribbean fathers are actively engaged in caregiving activities such as feeding, bathing, and playing with their children. A study conducted by the Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES) found that over 80% of Caribbean fathers report being involved in daily childcare activities,

challenging the notion of fatherhood being primarily a provider role.

Furthermore, studies show that children with involved fathers have better resilience, emotional intelligence, and self-esteem. According to a research from the University of the West Indies (UWI), parental participation has a protective impact in preventing children from engaging in dangerous behaviours including substance misuse and criminality.

The advantages of active fatherhood extend to the entire family, not just the child. Actively involved dads in Caribbean homes are associated with better co-parenting dynamics, greater levels of marital satisfaction, and stronger family bonds. Fathers who take an active role in providing care for their children also report feeling more satisfied with their parenting style and having closer emotional ties to their children.

Yet, obstacles and di culties still exist in the path of involved parenthood. Expectations around parenthood continue to be informed by sociocultural conventions and gender stereotypes, which frequently deter some men from embracing care-giving responsibilities. Fathers who are trying to juggle job and family obligations may also find it di cult to deal with the demands of the o ce and extended work hours. The truth is though, mothers rarely, if ever have a choice so why should we?

Personally, I’ve made peace with my newfound fortune of being a #GirlDad; becoming a card-carrying member of the ‘pink mafia’; gentle parenting; channeling those big feelings into instructive conversations… heck, navigating those pre-teen meltdowns all the while keeping abreast of French lessons, ballet and schoolwork are all the things I’ve voluntarily signed up for. And of course, no parent, father or mother, is successful without his or her village, plainly, Dad can no longer wander off into the forest with his brave warrior buds to hunt, invariably he sometimes has to bring baby along in a satchel. And that’s okay!

Tanisha Ellison

Tanisha Ellison’s journey from the confines of a laboratory to the forefront of law enforcement is nothing short of inspiring. At just 24 years old, Tanisha found herself feeling disillusioned with her career in medical technology, yearning for a more dynamic and impactful path. With a passion for problem-solving and a desire to make a difference, she made the bold decision to pursue her dreams within the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). Little did she know, this decision would set her on a trajectory towards becoming a Superintendent of Police, carving out a niche for herself in the world of law enforcement.

Tanisha shares her story of resilience, determination, and the pursuit of her CSI-inspired dream job.

BEING A MOTHER HAS MADE ME A BETTER SERVANT AND MADE ME A MORE CONFIDENT INDIVIDUAL.

Tanisha, can you walk us through your journey to becoming a Superintendent of Police?

I was 24 years old, 2 years into my marriage and a year bored of working in a Lab. Interacting with people merely by their names on tubes, slides and Petri dishes was quickly proving to be the job I had to get out of. I had just completed my BSc in Medical Technology but ultimately wanted to land myself a CSI-type dream job... you know that forensic bad-ass expert who could never get bored of solving problems...or cases for that matter. I enlisted in the JCF in June 2010 with one goal in mind...to land a spot at the Government Forensic Lab, which at the time was part of the JCF. “I quickly adapted to the environment, taking on leadership roles I hadn’t even realized I possessed and building the mental fortitude that has served me well during life’s toughest moments. By the end of training I was among 20 young constables who were specially selected for the Organized Crime Investigations Division (OCID, now Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch). This would be the beginning of my policing career as a detective.”

Her career would take her through several leadership positions including administration and communication.

Embracing her role at JCF, Tanisha no longer considered becoming a ‘bad-ass forensics expert’. “Being a police o cer rewarded me so much more,” she shares, and two years in the role, she was promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police.

How has motherhood influenced your career path?

Being a mother has made me a better servant and made me a more confident individual. I have always been ambitious but being a mother made me strive for excellence in a more deliberate way. It made me more sensitive to the unspoken messages I was sending as a young professional. As my daughter’s most prominent female figure, I wanted her to understand responsibility, so I sought out opportunities for a challenge and took on whatever tasks given wholeheartedly because it became more important to me that she was learning the attributes of grit, commitment, discipline, and self-motivation.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced as a mother balancing your responsibilities at home with your demanding role in law enforcement?

The biggest challenge I faced was accepting that there is no such thing as balance for anyone who is determined to be successful. Something will always have to give. If you want to lead a normal life, there is a place for balance, but if you want to lead an extraordinary life, you have to decide what you will have to give and when to give it up.

What unique skills or strengths have you developed as a mother that have proven beneficial in your professional career?

I’ve developed many skills as a mother but a unique strength I’m honing every day is being the life line for a child who is visibly di fferent. My daughter was diagnosed with alopecia in May 2023 – coincidentally her episode started during one of the JCF’s highest moments in history when we hosted the

I remember taking her to get tests done after she started showing the first signs of hair loss and still showing up for the police expo activities that week, though emotionally distraught and feeling like a failing parent. She was diagnosed with the most severe form of alopecia areata – loss of all body hair including scalp, eye brows, and eye lashes. Beyond the hair loss, she is a healthy, hearty and happy child, only feeling di fferent when others ask questions or point it out.

The experience has taught me a superior level of empathy, which I have found to be beneficial in my career. I have become more patient, attentive, a better listener and more emotionally intelligent in my interactions with subordinates, superiors and clients. I have also found where I am being approached more frequently by persons facing personal challenges, but who still have the confidence that their problems are not beyond resolution with the right kind of attention.

This journey is a book on its own.

Transformations Expo at the National Arena.

How do you prioritize your time and manage the demands of being a mother and a high-ranking officer simultaneously?

Full disclosure! It is extremely di cult and I sucked at this, terribly! I spent a lot of time on the job at the job and on the job at home.

Over time I was able to understand the capacity of my sta ff and delegate more. I also worked smarter, using available technologies to help track, research and prepare speeches more e ciently.

And yes, I asked Dad to cover for me…more times than I care to admit but some things I do not miss – Award Days (yup…she’s an Honour Roll regular), Performance Days, Sports Days, Competitions and anything that’s important to her.

In the last two years, I spent some more time with me and that was when I personally discovered that ‘the more you find the time, the more you find the time.’ You will always find the time for what’s important to you. I have cheated myself sleep and many social invitations on account of having too much to get done.

I have learnt to hibernate for two hours and an eight-hour sleep cycle is still a far cry, but I do, at least twice per week, get a proper sleep cycle in to continue to perform at peak levels on the job. Maintaining a high-value network requires networking and showing up, especially for those who show up for you… so I show up early, leave early and follow up the engagement with a thank you call or message. It’s important to show people that you appreciate that they considered spending time with you, no matter how simple the occasion.

But, my greatest time management skill has been the “do small tasks now” philosophy, which I’m so glad I discovered. Before taking this approach, I found that I spent a great deal of time trying to

catch up on low-hanging tasks. When you make the call you need to make when you think of it, send that email when you think of it, sign that permission slip when you think of it and do the pickups, drop-off s and pop-ins when you have a window for it, you are making more time for the big-ticket items, which require more time and effort. These little actions can have a huge impact and pay significant dividends on Mommy-daughter/son time. These days, I truly optimize my time (except for a rare lazy day which I also think I deserve) and I’m still learning to get better at it.

Can you share any insights or advice for other mothers who aspire to pursue leadership roles in traditionally male-dominated fields?

My advice is simple. Don’t allow society to place limitations on your aspirations and who you were meant to be. Take responsibility for your own success. Women are shattering glass ceilings every day, not because it’s easy to do but because it needs to be done and it’s worth it. Each time a ceiling is broken, another woman is empowered and many other women can stand on her shoulders.

“There’s no handbook, no script. Write your own story on your own terms…just do it your way…your future self will be glad you did,” she shares words of wisdom.

Tanisha’s journey exemplifies the power of determination, resilience, and the pursuit of one’s dreams. Her story serves as a testament to the fact that with unwavering dedication, anything is possible. As she continues to excel in her career, Tanisha remains an inspiration to mothers everywhere, proving that motherhood is not a limitation but rather a source of strength and motivation.

Toni Mark

The BossMom world is brimming with dynamic mothersin-business, whose vibrant spirit and unwavering determination truly captivate us.

Meet Toni Mark, a multifaceted powerhouse blending fashion, decor, and lifestyle with an unmistakable flair. Toni may have settled in Greenville, South Carolina, but her Jamaican-ness is so deeply engrained that it flavours everything she does.

While homeschooling her two daughters 9-year-old Charli and 7-year-old Ivy, being a wife, and building a business, she inspires with her impeccable taste and creativity and also embodies the resilience and tenacity shared by countless mothers striving to balance it all. Through her platform, Beautiful Tones, Toni embarks on a mission to curate spaces and moments

– weaving together threads of elegance and authenticity, to create a tapestry of inspiration for mothers everywhere.

Toni is a fashion, decor and lifestyle guru whose brushstrokes with Beautiful Tones, tell beautiful stories of empowerment and possibility, from the heart of her home.

How did you become passionate about sharing about affordable fashion and home decor?

I’ve always had a love for decor and grew up with a mum who also has an amazing eye for decor. I remember going with her to fabric stores because she wanted to reupholster the sofa or change the curtains. I think somewhere along the way, I caught

I FIND THAT MY JAMAICAN-NESS IS SO DEEPLY ENGRAINED THAT IT FLAVORS EVERYTHING I DO - ESPECIALLY THE WAY I PARENT.

her love of all things decor while doing it in a cost-effective way. After getting married in 2011, I really got the chance to put those skills to work when my husband, Joe, and I moved into our first apartment. We were definitely on a ‘newlywed’s budget’, so this presented the opportunity for me to put everything I’d learned from observing my mum about frugally making a house a home into practice. The inability to go out and buy all the latest new things mixed with my excitement around nesting as a new wife in my first home drove my curiosity around finding inventive ways to make my space beautiful without breaking the bank.

Fashion has also been a wonderful means of self expression for me for as long as I can remember. I’ve enjoyed playing around with clothes and creating outfits since my teen years and that hasn’t changed. Growing up with a single mum meant a tight budget, so that pushed me to get creative with styling clothing in multiple ways to get the most out of them. This also made me way less caught up with brands or following trends, and more so in honing my personal style - wearing what felt good to me and suited my lifestyle instead of just doing what everyone was doing.

Fast forward to when I had my second daughter, Ivy, in October 2017. I was a stay-at-home mum and the sole caregiver for a newborn and a 2-year-old (Charli). I realized then that I needed a creative outlet. I knew it had to be something that I could easily do because that season of life didn’t allow for a lot of free time. My innate love for fashion and decor meant I was always coming up with ways to create beauty in my environment with clothing or decor.

Then I became aware that people were sharing their love for decor online via Instagram. I figured it would be a great way to build community with like-minded people and serve as a creative outlet for me. And the rest is history. I started Beautiful Tones out of a heart to share my love of decor and fashion while showing that great style in the home or your wardrobe doesn’t have to cost a ton of money.

Beautiful Tones is still a passion project at this point. I’ve been homeschooling for the past 6 years and that in itself was a full-time job. Add to that the other responsibilities that typically come with

running a household in the U.S. with no paid help - I’ve been the head cook and bottle washer (quite literally for both babies!), since Charli was born. So there was very little time to pursue anything else. We put the girls in school this year, so I’m now in the process of determining what it will look like to monetize the gifts I’ve so enjoyed sharing with the Beautiful Tones community over the years.

As a Jamaican mother living in Greenville, South Carolina, how do you incorporate elements of your cultural heritage into your work and daily life?

I find that my Jamaican-ness is so deeply engrained that it flavors everything I do - especially the way I parent. But to be more specific - I’ve always been very intentional about having Jamaican story books for the girls to read. Making sure the girls know who Bredda Anancy and Miss Lou etc are has been very important to me.

Playing Jamaican music and teaching them about the artists is another way. Many an impromptu dance party has been had to the sounds of Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, Beres Hammond, Wayne Wonder, Sean Paul and a myriad of other Jamaican artists’ music.

Serving Jamaican dishes is another way that the culture is infused into our daily life. Plantain is served with as many meals as possible. Ackee and Saltfish with fried dumplings, Stew peas with spinners, Callaloo, Pepper Pot Soup, Jamaican Chicken soup, Curried chicken, Curried Shrimp, Jamaican Christmas Cake and Sorrel are just a few of the dishes that I’ve cooked and had in regular rotation in our home. The girls and Joe love all things Jamaicanespecially me! Of course, they drink tea often, but especially when they’re tummies hurt. Because as we know, ‘tea fixes everything’.

As far as my work, I think language is a large cultural element. When I share content, I speak as myself - not changing the way I speak to sound anything other than Jamaican. I also share peeks into my Jamaican-ness with my online community through food and music in my home. But also my use of many organic elements - wood, plants and other organic materials. My design approach is very open and breezy. It is inspired by nature and has a very tropical, biophilic feel - even all the way in South Carolina.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a BossMom, and how have you overcome them?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced as a BossMom has been making time for self care and not losing my sense of self in raising kids. Overcoming this particular challenge is multifaceted and quite honestly, a constant work in progress. It has taken a daily commitment to carving out time for prayer and exercise. I also started therapy late last year which has had such a positive effect on my mental health. Having a set bedtime for my girls since they were babies has also been something, as simple as it may sound, that has helped create a set time that I can unwind and have ‘down time’ before a new day begins. Not an exhaustive list, but those are a few.

How do you stay creative and innovative in your content creation process while catering to the needs of your audience?

I do that by trying not to get too caught up in being entertaining. There are a million TikTok and Instagram trends at any given moment, and trying to chase all of them can become exhausting. I’ve found it a better use of energy to focus more on sharing when I feel inspired and trying to act on the inspiration quickly. I also think that having the intention of serving my community is key. Remembering that there are actual people living real lives on the other side of the screen is what drives a lot of what I share. I’m also clear on what I’m passionate about and I allow that passion to fuel my content creation instead of trying to fit into a particular niche. That keeps my love of creating content fresh so that genuine enjoyment and energy shines through to my community.

What motivated your decision to homeschool your children, and what was your experience with homeschooling?

I was initially moved to homeschool because of the cost of private school and a desire to be able to provide my girls with a customized learning experience. Homeschool gave me the ability to slow down and spend time on areas where they were challenged and to move ahead in areas where they were excelling. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit the entire world, our girls’ education was not interrupted because we were already doing school in our home. When schools finally reopened I had the peace of mind that I could continue their education without worrying about the health risks involved with being out in school. Homeschool made our schedule very flexible. We could work around doctors appointments or travel and not lose time because of the highly customized nature of it all. Homeschool was also very time e cient as you have less students so instructional time was usually a maximum of about 3 hours a day. My experience with homeschooling had many many pros, but like anything in life, it had its cons as well. We just sensed it was just time for our family to make the shift to conventional school.

How did you approach homeschooling to ensure your children received a well-rounded education while also nurturing their individual interests and talents?

We paid attention to where their natural gifts, abilities and interests lied and tried to foster those with activities that allowed them explore these areas more deeply. My younger daughter, Ivy, loves

building so we’ve been intentional about providing lots of STEM toys for her and my older daughter , Charli, loves fashion and making clothing so we got her a sewing machine that she’s learning to use.

What role does flexibility play in your homeschooling approach, especially given the demands of running your own business?

Again Beautiful Tones is a passion project, which still requires time and effort. Having balanced that with homeschooling, I would imagine it would lend itself to providing a lot of flexibility for a mum running her own business. But the other side of the coin would be the challenge of balancing the demands of business with the demands of educating your children. Not impossible for a BossMom to do both with excellence, but I think knowing what your capacity is in any given season and understanding that that your capacity will change with each season is crucial. Knowing one’s limitations and being willing to get help from your village or hiring help would also be crucial to avoiding burnout.

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED HOMESCHOOLING YOUR CHILD?

HERE’S SOME ADVICE FROM TONI TO GET YOU STARTED.

If you’re feeling led to try homeschooling, you should.

I think going into it with an open mind is very important.

Give yourself tons of grace.

Be ready to say you’re sorry when you lose your cool.

Mommy can put herself in timeout when she needs a break.

Have a set time of day when everyone does something quiet away from you so you don’t get overwhelmed.

Make sure you eat and hydrate because it’s harder to be a good mom and teacher if you’re hangry.

Know that it’s ok to change your mind - if you give it a fair shot and find it’s not for you and your family, that’s okay. Don’t count it as a failure. Consider it a ‘good to know’. Now we know this isn’t for us right now. Even that may change further down the road.

Get a curriculum - trying to make it up on your own can be really tough especially if you’re new to being an educator.

Plan play dates with other homeschooling families so kids and parents get much needed social interaction.

How do you prioritize self-care as a busy BossMom, and what practices do you find most rejuvenating?

This is closely related to the question about self care because that has been my biggest challenge. It’s one of the reasons that I share reminders about doing something for yourself so often with my online community. I need the reminder - so I figure someone else might need it too. I carve out time to do something for myself every day. Some things are non-negotiable like quiet time with God and exercise. Others are things that get added in depending on the day. Therapy has been life-changing. I’ve been more intentional about getting out in nature and I’m also trying to be more intentional about building a village here in Greenville because quite frankly, BossMoms need friends. I find my non-negotiables of time with God and exercise to be most rejuvenating. I also love dancing to my favorite dancehall or gospel songs (instant mood booster!) and getting my nails done.

Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for Beautiful Tones, both personally and professionally?

The big dream is for Beautiful Tones to grow into a business that helps women to develop a wardrobe they feel comfortable and confident in - curating a closet that reflects and celebrates exactly who they are and serves where they are in their lives. I want to help women turn their homes into sanctuaries that they absolutely love living in. I want to help them create spaces that serve their needs while exciting their senses. Spaces that they never want to leave and feel proud to invite others into. Spaces that are a reflection of all that they love and enjoy - a true reflection the beautiful women they are. Reflecting all their facets…all their Beautiful Tones.

TONI’S TOP TIPS

for finding a ffordable fashion and home decor pieces without sacrificing style or quality?

1. Become clear on what your personal style is - for your home and your closet. I think understanding your style helps to keep you from being driven by trends. The focus is more on what you like - what your taste is. Your purchases will be driven by what makes you feel most confident and what most accurately expresses who you are instead of trying to keep up with what the masses are doing. It is a beautifully freeing thing to become someone who is comfortable in their personal style and not caught up with what ‘style experts’ say you should be wearing or putting in your home. I think our homes are such a unique and personal expression of our style. What makes on person feel comforted would make another person cringe.

2. Creating and curating a home or a wardrobe you love takes time. When we rush it, we can end up buying pieces that fill the space but don’t necessarily speak to who we are. They take up space in the home or closet but may not necessarily suit our lifestyle at the time. Allow yourself the time to gather pieces that truly speak to you. Pieces that you really love. Pieces that you are excited to wear or have displayed in your home. That is a key component of curating timeless style.

3. Don’t get caught up with brands. Focus instead on timeless items. Consider the materials they are made from. Price point has little to do with quality when you know what to look for. Pay attention to craftsmanship when selecting items for your home or wardrobe. Many times the price will (pleasantly) surprise you.

Despite crazy busy days I still come home to cook dinner for them most nights! According to them, they actually like me, and don’t keep secrets from me.”

NATALIE TOOK TIME OUT OF HER BUSY SCHEDULE TO CHAT WITH BOSSMOMDNA RECENTLY:

What did you enjoy most from switching lanes being a banker to becoming a Certified Holistic Health Coach and then starting The Life Store Wellness Boutique?

I was finally able to pour all of my time and attention into the area of work that I was so interested in, which is obviously health and Wellness.

What motivated you to transition from the corporate world to pursuing a career in health and wellness?

Although I worked for an amazing company and loved the reliability of a steady paycheck I really couldn’t see myself retiring after

having lived an entire Lifelong career in banking. I had evolved away from appreciating that I was just trading my time for money and I realized that most of my life my waking hours was spent at the bank and therefore I should be spending that much of my time on something that really inspires me and motivates me. I was also constantly torn between my role as a mother and my career. I knew the time was right when I cried more days than not at my desk. I realized that it was better to give it a shot when I was still young enough to fail and crawl back to banking with my tail between my legs then wait until it was too late and then live with the regret of never giving it a try.

I’M BASICALLY THE CEO AND THE CFO AND THE MARKETING CONSULTANT AND THE TEAM MANAGER.
I’M INVOLVED WITH EVERYTHING THAT WE DO HERE, AND THANKFULLY I HAVE THE UNDERSTANDING
OF HOW TO EXECUTE A LOT OF WHAT’S REQUIRED.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when making this career shift, and how did you overcome them?

The first major challenge was just outright fear. The burning question of what am I gonna do if I don’t make it, what am I gonna do if I can’t make enough money to support my family.

How do you integrate your background in banking with your passion for health and wellness in your current role?

I think everything to do with my career in banking and also my initial degrees (which were in commerce, economics, finance) all of this helps me in my current role. I’m basically the CEO and the CFO and the marketing consultant and the team manager. I’m involved with everything that we do here, and thankfully I have the understanding of how to execute a lot of what’s required.

Can you share with us some of the key principles or philosophies that guide your approach to holistic health coaching?

I believe that people are a lot sicker than they need to be. I’d like to change that I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all and there also is no single approach to improving your Wellness. I believe strongly in personalized nutrition. I think doctors are very, very, very important people but unfortunately doctors come in after people are already sick and I would like to help prevent sickness. Most diseases are diet and lifestyle related – as the saying goes genetics loads the gun but epigenetics pulls the trigger. We just don’t take the time out to take care of ourselves because we’re so caught up in the world of commerce and material things that we continue to trade our life in exchange for money and that basically trades our Wellness. The problem with this is that by the time we’ve acquired enough and feel comfortable enough we’re too sick to enjoy the fruits of our labour. I’d like to change that. I’m hoping to inspire people to take care of themselves while in their financial journey so that they can enjoy every aspect of life - well.

What inspired you to establish Body By TLS, and how does it complement the services offered at The Life Store Wellness Boutique?

The inspiration for Body by TLS was birthed out of my observation that people could be doing all the right things but still not achieve the aesthetics that they were after with their body. My desire is never to allow people or encourage people to eat fast fake food and then just come for us to contour it away. My goal is to encourage the healthy living and lifestyle which you can supplement aesthetically with the body contouring. And then sometimes it works in the reverse where people come in strictly for the aesthetics and I’m able to nurture them towards a healthy lifestyle.

As a busy BossMom, how do you prioritize self-care and maintain your own health and wellness while managing multiple business ventures?

It’s really tricky and I think it’s important for us all to recognize that we are not always 100% hitting all of our targets and goals in every aspect of our life so the first thing that is important is that we have to be gentle with ourselves. In terms of workouts, I schedule my workouts and that’s my time and I’m unapologetic about it and I don’t let anything get between me and my workouts. As it relates to food, I try to meal prep as much as possible so that I don’t have to eat food that makes me feel less than amazing. I also ensure that I cook for my family so that their nutrition is top notch as well. I also do regular what I like to call maintenance so it could be a sports massage or Reiki just to make sure that I’m taking care of my body and soul. At the end of 2023 I must admit that I was not doing a very good job in setting boundaries and as a result I was feeling burnt out and blood pressure went up and I didn’t like that at all so 2024 has been a year of establishing more boundaries things like if I work on a weekend, I may take the Monday off but we have to recognize that rest is important.

Can you discuss the role of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) in your coaching practice and how it has influenced your approach to helping clients?

So although I’m certified in neurolinguistic programming I don’t actively offer it as a service in my coaching practice but I utilize the principles and the techniques that I learned in that program in order to develop better rapport with my clients, to understand them better, to speak in ways that they understand me better, and also to help them relax when that’s needed.

What sets The Life Store apart from other wellness boutiques, and what unique offerings do you provide to your clients?

What we’re creating here is a complete holistic Wellness space and I think that really sets us apart from other health food stores. You may come in to purchase vitamin C but end up recognizing that you need some nutritional coaching. I also love the fact that we are a women-owned, women-run and women sta ffed organization. When you come here we’re gonna have a conversation in Wellness with you, not just sell your product or a solution. We pride ourselves on educating our clients.

How do you stay updated with the latest trends and developments in the health and wellness industry to ensure you’re providing the best possible services to your clients?

I’m an avid reader I’m an avid podcast listener I’m an avid conference attendee I’m a real geek when it comes to things to do with Wellness. I also recently updated my coaching certification. I’m a lifelong learner.

Can you share a success story or memorable moment from your journey as a BossMom that highlights the impact of your work on others?

Recently there was a woman that I was working with who wanted to lose weight - she is perimenopausal and the weight has been stubborn. Working with me she lost 17 lbs and inches all over and when we did her wrapping up session, she turned away from me and started to cry. I was a little confused but I gave her the space she needed and when it was appropriate, I asked her what she was experiencing. She said that she never thought it was possible for her to lose weight again. So, in every story of weight loss there is the emotional side and the impact on people’s lives. Comically one woman recently told me that she caught her husband looking at her like she was a snack - I just love that!

Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for The Life Store and Body By TLS, and how do you envision continuing to make a difference in the health and wellness community?

Well first of all we really need to get our website in order and kickstart our e-commerce so that we can aggressively expand across the island in terms of delivery of Wellness products. It’s my goal for the life store Wellness boutique to be a real center of Wellness that when you think of Wellness and women’s Wellness specifically this is a place that you’re going to want to come to. We’re gonna outgrow our current space at some point because there’s so much more offerings that are gonna be coming on board. I’d love to have a bigger team of Wellness minded service-oriented women with my same desire to help people improve their quality of life and their Wellness.

Builds Home #8 for Mom's in Need

BossMom Builds, a network of mothersin-business dedicated to making a positive impact in their communities, built another home in collaboration with Ziggy Marley’s URGE Foundation to build their third home together.

This partnership marks a significant milestone, bringing the total number of houses built to eight since the network’s inception in 2022. The construction of this home represents the first project for 2024, kicking off a year of ambitious plans to build several more homes as part of a wider effort to help mothers provide for their families.

The collaboration between BossMom Builds and URGE

Foundation embodies a shared commitment to addressing the housing needs of families in need, particularly those headed by single mothers. Through their combined efforts, they aim to create safe and stable environments where families can thrive and children can grow.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Ziggy Marley’s URGE Foundation to build homes for families in need,” said Michelle Gordon, founder of BossMom Builds. “As mothers ourselves, we understand the importance of having a safe and secure place to call home. By joining forces with like-minded partners, we can make a meaningful di fference in the lives of families who are facing housing insecurity, which subsequently impacts family life.”

The homes built by BossMom Builds are not just structures; they are symbols of hope and opportunity for families striving for a better future. Each home is built under the umbrella of the Food for the Poor charity organization, and furnished with love, by the additional donors and other BossMoms.

This Mother’s Day Build for 2024 saw the support of 6 BossMom Network members, Dr. Peta Gay McDonald, Patricia WrightMyrie, Aiesha Panton, Dr. Jillian RanglinRobinson, Tess Maria Leon and Nastassia Morrison - all BossMom entrepreneurs in di fferent industries.

“We are honored to receive support from new and returning partners including Ford, Courts, Optical Elements, Insight Global, Josephs, Jambisco, Value Gas and Nestle. Building and furnishing a home is a collaborative effort, and we couldn’t do this without help,” shares Michelle Gordon. In the year ahead, BossMom Builds is committed to expanding their efforts to build homes for families in need. Through fundraising initiatives and volunteer efforts, they plan to continue to make a meaningful di fference in the lives of more mothers and children.

“Seeing the excitement on the faces of the children as their bunk bed was being set up was just beautiful.” Courts was happy to donate to BossMom Builds as part of their 65 Acts of Kindness programme. “We donate the houses and do all we are able to to make those houses into homes.”

Brewed With Mom's Love

As a self-professed coffee lover, the charm of a neighbourhood coffee shop is more in the lay of the land, and less on the latte.

I’d been hearing quite a bit about downtown Kingston’s newest coffee shop, Danya’s Coffee Barrel. Their IG page is strewn with scintillating pics, and that pretty much guaranteed that it wouldn’t be too long before I would visit. I sat with co-owner Brittany Ho over yes, you guessed it - a cup of coffee, and it didn’t take me long to be enamored by a little love story as it unfolded in front of me.

History has always told the story of the parent who does everything in their power to make their child’s dreams come true through dedication and sacrifice. But it hits di fferent when it’s the child who sets the stage for her mother to perform.

“My mother is a nurse by profession, so taking care of people comes naturally to

her, and being an incredible cook and baker is a bonus.” Brittany speaks about Danya with such pride it makes her mother blush. There needs to be no explanation as to why this partnership is so perfect. Danya is shy, Brittany is not.

Brittany recalls her mother always being in the kitchen, cooking up a storm, actually, more baking up a storm, but always satisfying tummies and souls. She was comfortable in the kitchen, prepping, mixing and serving, while Brittany, her youngest daughter, was out front smiling, welcoming and entertaining. The same rings true today. Growing up where food was her everything, Brittany naturally segued into the food industry. From studying the culinary arts in school to beginning her career in food, she moved from back-of-house, cooking for service line, to hostessing, to guest relations and front-

of-house. Her wealth of experience coupled with her mother’s love for people and skill with food, made for a perfect partnership.

“Mummy always had a vision of owning a sidewalk cafe, with people sitting along the waterfront, at barrel tables, enjoying coffee and good food.” And Brittany wanted to see her mother’s dream come alive.

Why the barrel? It’s a part of the name, so it must have some significance. Danya smiles as Brittany explains that just as the café is a realization of a dream, the barrel is the inclusion of one her favourite things. The barrel is indicative of age and wisdom and naturalness… kinda like Danya. Everything from scratch - pure and authentic.

Now, as downtown Kingston slowly comes back to life, Danya’s Coffee Barrel is there to get to know new customers and to welcome returning diners with open arms.

"WE ARE DELIBERATE IN GETTING TO KNOW OUR CUSTOMERS. EACH OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS TAKES PRIDE IN REMEMBERING WHO TAKES SUGAR AND WHO PREFERS NO MILK."

“We are deliberate in getting to know our customers. Each of our team members takes pride in remembering who takes sugar and who prefers no milk. We want to know how yesterday’s meeting went and if the pitch they’d been working on was successful.

Typically, with limited seating in a small space, Danya’s was becoming a grab your lunch and go-back-to-desk kind of place. But now there’s an increase in midtown diners coming for a break from New Kingston and a definite upsurge in customers who look forward to the time away from work - even if it’s just to absorb the view of the harbour across the street.

What’s bringing the diners back again and again? It’s the feeling that your food is homemade, with a bit of the cliché love that we always read about. But don’t just take my word for it. You can start with their house favourites! The chili and cornbread is a comfort food hit, even if you’re not in search of comfort food. Other crowd faves? - The smoked marlin bagel AND the pork tenderloin sandwich to name a few. But beyond food and beverage, Danya’s has given Kingston’s waterfront community a place where they can feel at home.

6 REASONS WE LOVE DANYA’S COFFEE BARREL

• Early Morning Magic. On your way to work you should stop for a lite breakfast bite and of course, hot cup of coffee. Once you round the bend on the waterfront, Danya’s is the first stop on the right. They open at 7am Mondays to Fridays, and if you’re in and out early enough, there’s no telling how magical your day will be.

• The Coffee Is Good. We already know that DeafCan Baristas have the art of coffee making down to a science. They also add the perfect je ne sais quoi to your coffee experience. All you have to do, is know which brew you’re in the mood for and place your order. You can put a smile on your face and theirs, by googling how to order your favourite brew in sign language! Your ca ffeine fix aside, you not only boost your mood, but your energy and concentration levels will be in tip top shape. Now, back to work for you!

• You Are Where They Know Your Name. All you have to do is go there more than once, and you’ll be welcomed by name at your second visit. There’s something special about someone remembering your name and using it to address you. It’s the simple things that make a big di fference.

• The Mother And Daughter Combo Is Cute When your frontline team members are your connection to the customer, they are largely responsible for setting the culture of your business. The dynamics between a mother and her daughter captured by Danya and Brittany is a beautiful balance of synchronized business etiquette and just the right amount of a personal touch.

• Vibes Nice. Quaint coffee shops form an impressive part of the landscape of most modern cities. Kingston may be taking a while to get there, but we’re moving forward knowing that just selling coffee and food will no longer ‘cut it’ in the scheme of things. It’s all about the vibes creating an environment to encourage longer visits, more creativity and more connectivity.

• The Lighting Makes For Great Pics To Post. When the entire side wall of your building is all-glass with no window blocks to interrupt your view, you have a natural filter preset for perfect pics. Now all you need to do is step up your hashtag game and click away. Sip on a hot brew while enjoying a thick stew and share your favourite new coffee shop with the world. 42 - 56 Harbour St, Kingston 876-603-0405

Charcuterie Boards by Trudi

Her reputation precedes her. If you want a majestic charcuterie board, don’t YouTube it, don’t google it, just call the lady who wows her clients every - single - time.

This Board

brie

Trudi Hamilton is to a smorgasbord what Jean Claude Monet is to a blank canvas. In her element, she is an unchained artist, eager to create. Before meeting her, in my mind’s eye, I envisioned her to be an eclectic sort, with eyes closed, humming some unrecognizable tune, while creating her craft. But in reality, she was calm, collected, and as cool as a cucumber.

She prepared the cheeseboard in front of her as if she were putting together the pieces of an intricate puzzle, carefully deciding where each piece belonged and casually chatting as she went along.

“I grew up in the food business.” Trudi’s voice is soft and feathery, so I leaned in to hear her carefully. “My mother was a caterer so food and entertaining were a big part of my life growing up.” She speaks proudly of her family’s pioneering business Hamilton’s Smokehouse

Cantalope,
topped with honey and scotch bonet pepper, cheddar asiago cheese sticks, smoked salmon with capers, Hamilton’s smoke house, cherry tomatoes, grapes, Trudi Alexis pick up salt fish, artichoke, pepper jelly, wheat crackers, Jamaican jack cheese, bleu cheese, smoked almonds, rosemary flat breads, capicola meat, strawberry jam.

that is today a recognizable name in many Jamaican households. She also speaks of developing an early understanding of the importance of food both tasting and looking good. Trudi curates experiences for her clients using visuals to elevate the overall experience. “Aesthetics and flavour go hand-in-hand, and that’s something I bear in mind with each board that I create.”

Trudi steps back to assess her workin-progress. She’s not yet fully satisfied, so she keeps going. “Each board is a new opportunity to combine di fferent flavours, di fferent pieces of the world, and combine them on one board in an artistic and colourful way that is enjoyable to the palette. This is art to me.” She stands back again, getting closer each time to exactly what she wants.

Do you have a concept of knowing where you’re going to place what?

“It’s fun to me. I throw as I go along. Literally like a painting or piece of art. A blank canvas. As I’m doing it, I switch around until I find what work wherefoodie art.”

Trudi started creating cheeseboards for fun. But like many creatives who begin with pure passion, her gift forged a path for her that has become a sought-after skill and business. A Trudi Hamilton board is appropriate for any gathering, of any size. And with the holidays just around the corner, there’s no better time to familiarize yourself with Trudi. All you have to do is tell her the occasion and if you have any special requests, let her know… then leave the rest up to her.

How do you know when you’re finished? “I just keep going until my heart says stop.”

Trudi’s charcuterie boards display such a variety of traditional meats, cheese, olives, crackers, fruit to chocolates, and dips. “The great thing with boards is that I can curate to make it ‘your own’. There are no rules. But I do try to think outside the box and often end up adding di fferent layers. I add hues, tones and interesting elements and find foods that work along those Iines. And then there is always wine.

Wine makes everything better. Not that Trudi’s boards need any help, but she added to this board-in-progress, Kung Fu Girl Riesling which paired perfectly with her Jamaican Jerk element on the board. A medium-bodied, crisp white wine balances

the spice in the jerk perfectly. While Mudhouse Pinot Noir matched the softer cheese found in the board’s Brie. As a rule of thumb, soft cheeses pair well with sparkling wine or white wine, and sharp aged cheeses are a great compliment to bolder flavours of full-bodied wines.

For Trudi, the key to creating a balanced and beautiful board is to be adventurous. Her refined taste naturally lends itself to a very sophisticated presentation, appealing to the palette that understands and appreciates the robust flavours of culinary pairings. Throw in the cured wooden Tamara Harding board and you’ve got a match made in smorgasbord heaven. The textures and flavours along with the contradiction of opposites are part of the je ne sais quoi that make Trudi Hamilton boards as special as they currently are.

B3 COMMUNITY

The Do’s and Don’ts of Donating

In a world where kindness and generosity can make a significant di fference, teaching our children the value of giving back is essential. When they observe us (their parents) engaging in philanthropy, they can learn valuable life lessons that extend beyond the act of giving. They understand that we can all contribute to making the world a better place, and they realize that their actions can have a positive effect on others.

Most importantly, they develop a sense of gratitude and awareness of the privileges they may have. As parents, especially moms, our approach to philanthropy not only impacts those we help but also shapes the values and behaviours of our children.

Here’s a guide to the do’s and don’ts of donating, ensuring your contributions are meaningful and impactful.

DO

1. Give from your heart.

2. Filter

Go through your children’s clothes every 6 months. Get all the outgrown clothing and rarely worn items together. Check those toys too. Why have them hanging or lying around when another child would enjoy using them? De-clutter away!

3. Research.

Before donating to any cause, take the time to research the organization. Ensure they are reputable and that your donation will be used effectively. Organizations like Food for the Poor, Impact Jamaica, or the Salvation Army can provide valuable insights into how organizations operate and allocate their funds.

4. Get Involved.

Go beyond monetary donations and consider volunteering your time or skills. Involvement in local community projects or events allows you to see firsthand the impact of your contributions and build connections within your community.

5. Include Your Children.

Involve your children in the process of giving back. Explain why you are donating and encourage them to participate, whether it’s through choosing a charity, helping to pack donation boxes, or volunteering together. This hands-on experience teaches them empathy, generosity, and social responsibility. Pick a day, and plan your trip, and make it an event on your family calendar for Summer.

6. Focus on Local Needs.

Consider supporting local charities and initiatives. This not only helps your community but also allows you to see the tangible effects of your contributions. Local donations can often make a more immediate and visible impact.

7. Ensure Sustainability:

Opt for donations that support sustainable development. Whether it’s funding educational programs or supporting environmental initiatives, ensure that your contributions promote longterm benefits rather than temporary relief.

DON’T

1. Don’t Give Garbage.

When donating items, it’s crucial to consider their condition and usefulness. Don’t give what you wouldn’t want to receive yourself. If you’ve considered throwing it in the trash, do just that. Donating damaged or worn-out goods can create more problems than it solves, as organizations then need to dispose of these items, which takes away from their resources. Ensure that the items you donate are clean, functional, and in good condition. This shows respect for the dignity of those who will receive them and ensures that your contributions truly help those in need.

2. Don’t Overlook Smaller Charities.

While large organizations often have more visibility, smaller, grassroots charities can be just as effective, if not more so, in their specific areas of focus. They often operate with lower overhead costs and can provide more personalized services.

3. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Advocacy.

In addition to donating money or items, use your voice to advocate for causes you care about. Raising awareness through social media, participating in community events, or writing to local representatives can amplify your impact.

4. Don’t Forget to Follow Up.

After donating, follow up to see how your contribution was used. Many organizations provide updates on their projects and how donor funds are allocated. This can reassure you of the impact and keep you engaged with the cause.

Stylish Spaces, Home Oasis

What is home? “Home” is more than a physical structure or a place to shelter from the elements. It is a collection of memories, a sanctuary where you feel safe, and a reflection of those who dwell there. Home is deeply personal, and thanks to the vast array of design and décor elements at our disposal, no two homes need ever be the same.

Designing a home for a family presents unique challenges and opportunities. When my fiancé, Dylan (now husband), and I decided to buy our first home together, I had no idea that merging two lives into one household would result in a five-year (and counting) renovation and design project. We transitioned from “mine” to “ours” and from “I” to “we” gradually, as we picked and chose from the pieces we had both acquired over the years. The result

is a melting pot of our combined design styles: casual chic meets modern tastemaker. Together, we’ve created a place we call home for us and our twin daughters, Amari and Zein.

Designing a family-friendly home that balances style, comfort, and function involves careful planning and thoughtful choices to create a space that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Here are some key considerations and tips that I’ve found helpful in achieving this balance:

PERSONALIZATION AND STYLE

As humans, we are visual by nature, and an aesthetically pleasing space creates a welcoming feel for anyone who enters. Popular design styles can create a visually appealing, family-friendly atmosphere. Whether your design style is modern, traditional, or somewhere in between, the use of color, furniture selections, and decorative elements enhances the overall style of your home. My advice is not to focus too much on what’s in style or en trend but on what works for the way your family lives and what is important to you. Infuse your home with personal touches that reflect your family’s personality. Display family photos, children’s artwork, and meaningful items to make the space feel uniquely yours. Use gallery walls or shelves to keep it organized.

PRIORITIZING COMFORT

As a wife and mother, I’ve discovered that comfort reigns supreme in my household. You’ll find cozy nooks for reading, a deep-seated sectional for movie nights instead of a traditional three-piece sofa combination, and plush rugs and floor poufs for added warmth and coziness. The family room has become the heart of our home, providing the perfect opportunity for bonding. My advice is to consider using a mix of lighting options, including overhead, task, and ambient lighting, to create a cozy atmosphere in the evenings.

ENHANCING FUNCTIONALITY

I approach designing a home as an investment rather than an expense. Life happens, and investing in practical and durable products in the long run saves money and gives you peace of mind when enjoying time at home. One of the hardest-working areas of the home is the floor. When choosing flooring, select hardwood, porcelain tile, or laminate that is easy to clean and can withstand heavy use. If adding decorative rugs, consider area rugs that are machine washable. When selecting furnishings, choose upholstery pieces with stain-resistant fabrics or slipcovers. Try to integrate built-in storage to help keep clutter at bay or multifunctional pieces, such as ottomans with hidden compartments or coffee tables with shelves.

As you create the home your family will enjoy for years to come, design a space that will adapt to your family’s changing needs. Create rooms that can easily transition as your family grows, such as a nursery that can become a playroom or a home o ce that can serve as a guest room. Establish kid-friendly zones with designated areas for toys, books, and school supplies. Remember, even the tiniest members of the household want to feel included.

The Art of Influence

In today’s digital age, influencers have largely become responsible for the way brands connect with consumers and how so many people show up online.

For moms in the influencer space, it’s like being the CEO of your own mini-empire. Gone are the days of quietly sipping coffee while the little ones nap; now, it’s all about curating the perfect Instagram feed, mastering TikTok dances, and striking brand partnerships like a seasoned pro.

So, what does it really mean to be a mom influencer in 2024? We dive into the ever-evolving world of digital parenting prowess with a brief chat with three BossMoms in the influencer space.

These three BossMoms may be spread across di fferent corners of the globe, but their impact resonates far and wide. With their collective reach of over one million followers daily, they hold the power to shape trends, influence purchasing decisions, and inspire fellow moms worldwide. Their ability to navigate the complexities of digital parenting while maintaining authenticity and relatability sets them apart in the crowded influencer landscape. As they continue to innovate and adapt to the ever-evolving digital landscape, their influence shapes many a conversation and sets standards for modern parenting in 2024 and beyond.

Today, brands are looking for more than just a pretty picture and a clever caption. In a sea of influencers vying for attention, authenticity reigns supreme. Sure, the perfectly styled living room and impeccably dressed children are nice, but what really gets brands excited is a mom who isn’t afraid to show the messy, real-life moments of parenting. After all, it’s the relatable content that truly resonates with audiences.

But being a mom influencer isn’t just about snapping selfies with your kiddos and hashtagging #ad. It’s about being a storyteller, a curator of content, and a master of engagement. From sharing honest product reviews to showcasing creative parenting hacks, the best mom influencers know how to keep their audience entertained, informed, and coming back for more.

SHANI:

How have you navigated the unique challenges of being a mom influencer in Jamaica compared to influencers in other regions?

Jamaica is a small island with an ever smaller network of people, where everyone knows everyone! As a result, as a recognized influencer, “you can’t walk anywhere without constant conversation and interactions with your followers.” Popular fitness guru and mom influencer Shani Shirley, shares that she, her husband and her children are easily recognized wherever she travels on the island. “When choosing to become an influencer, you make a personal choice to be in the spotlight.” But for her family, it was never a group discussion. “I have gotten accustomed and appreciate my followers stopping me “everywhere” … to engage in conversation, ask advise, check on my family, but it initially freaked my kids out to be honest.”

“When we chose to live our life publicity, we open ourselves up to scrutiny and believe me, everyone is a critic and has an opinion. I try to create a balance to be me, without making my kids or my husband uncomfortable - and many times I’m right on the edge!”

Thriving as a mom influencer in 2024 takes a delicate balancing act of authenticity, creativity, and resilience. It’s about staying true to yourself while also staying ahead of the ever-shifting trends. It’s about embracing the chaos of motherhood while also maintaining a carefully curated online presence. And most importantly, it’s about finding joy and fulfillment in sharing your journey with the world.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just dipping your toes into the influencer waters, remember that the most important thing is to stay true to yourself, have fun, and keep evolving in a world that’s constantly changing. After all, there’s nothing more powerful than a mom with a smartphone and a story to tell.

STACEY:

When asked about the most rewarding aspect of being a mom influencer, Californiabased BossMom Dr. Stacey Freeman, @poshinprogress, says that her kids recognize that they have a lot of unique experiences because of her business. “So we talk a lot about gratitude and also the reality that they have gotten to do a lot of things other kids haven’t. I think it’s super important for me to ground them and focus on gratitude always.” Since moving to California, Stacey admits that they gotten so many unique opportunities that they didn’t have when they lived in Arizona or Boston. “There are just so many more opportunities because of the larger market,” she shares. “Since moving to LA we’ve gotten to attend a lot of movie screenings and premieres, in-store events with major brands, and the most exciting collaborations for the kids have been with the theme parks in our area. I am so grateful for the fun memories we’ve gotten to make at Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood and Knotts Berry Farm, among others.”

Being a mom influencer comes with its fair share of perks and pitfalls. On the one hand, there’s the thrill of landing coveted brand partnerships, attending exclusive events, and building a following of fellow moms who appreciate advice shared. However, on the other hand, there’s the pressure to constantly perform, the neverending stream of DMs and comments to respond to, and the occasional troll lurking in the shadows.

KEYMA:

Jamaican-born, US-based influencer Keyma Morgan @styleweekender, understands that the challenges and the benefits come in waves that require grace and balance. With a following of over half a million accounts and strong influence as a mom influencer, Keyma shares some of the most rewarding aspects of her chosen career path.

“I find this career path to be rewarding personally & professionally because of the overall creative nature, the flexibility to work on projects that align with my goals, being able to set my own work schedule, getting to meet other amazing creatives where we exchange ideas and/or collaborate. This job is layered and keeps me on my toes and I love that. I often feel challenged and I need that both person professionally. In many ways, it’s very fulfilling for me to be tasked and challenged creatively.

How do you balance the challenges and benefits that come with a career in content creation and brand representation?

Being in the influencer space can be very noisy but among all that noise I stay true to myself. For example, a style of content may become trendy but it just doesn’t align with how I create and share my messaging. I have to stay grounded in my truth so that my content feels authentic to me and will translate as such to my audience. I take all the challenges as they come and deal with them accordingly in a sound and quiet headspace. As for brand representation, I love finding and working with brands that align with my goals and vision. These change depending on the season of my life and to be able to bring an idea successfully to life is probably one of the most rewarding feeling being an influencer.

In all, I try not to work in a bubble or do it all. I have help in the form of an assistant and I rely on my colleagues on the space to share ideas, work out issues and support each other.
