2020 SILVER ANTELOPE AWARDS The Silver Antelope Award is conferred by the National Court of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America upon nomination by the region for distinguished service to youth. The award is made for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth by registered Scouters within the territory under the jurisdiction of the Southern Region.

EDWARD A. CHAPMAN Houston, Texas Sam Houston Area Council Houston, Texas

The most fun Andy has had in his 20 years as a Scouting leader was serving as program director and camp staff member at Camp Edgewood in DeQuincy, Louisiana. But his greatest achievement had a far more global scope: his election by the 2017 World Scout Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, as vice chair of its World Scout Committee. An Eagle Scout, Andy has received the International Scouter’s Award, the Silver Beaver Award, the Order of the Arrow Distinguished Service Award, the Venturing Leadership Award, and the District Award of Merit. He is a life member of the Kandersteg International Scout Centre Association, a member of the Order of the Condor of the Interamerican Scout Region, and a World Baden-Powell Fellow. Andy also serves on the World Scout Foundation Board, the BSA International Committee, and the Sam Houston Area Council advisory board. He has served on the National Order of the Arrow Committee, as region chair of the Order of the Arrow, and as region coordinator of the National Leadership Seminar. Andy has served as an OA section chief and associate adviser, and as a Wood Badge Scoutmaster, lodge adviser, lodge chief, and a Calcasieu Area Council board member. He has also served as a district roundtable commissioner, assistant Scoutmaster, and senior patrol leader for the Calcasieu Area Council. A senior director of Alvarez & Marsal, Andy has more than 15 years of tax consulting experience with clients across a variety of industries, and he is a frequent guest speaker at national tax conferences, symposiums, and seminars. A member of the Knights of Columbus, Andy serves as a member and treasurer of the board of directors for the Lake Arthur Reclamation Company in Louisiana, which focuses on alligator, crawfish, and rice production, waterfowl migration, and oil and gas operations.

PETER H. COLLINS Tampa, Florida Greater Tampa Bay Area Council Tampa, Florida

Peter considers his greatest achievement in 12 years as an adult Scouter to be his service as Area 4 president since 2017—a time in which the area has seen two consecutive years of expansion, topping the nation in membership gains and Friends of Scouting growth. An Eagle Scout, Peter has received the National Eagle Scout Association’s Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. In addition to serving as area president, he is the council’s presidentelect for 2021 and executive vice president, and he serves on the executive committee and board. Peter has served as chair of the BSA National Foundation’s Investment Committee and as a region board and executive committee member. He has also served as chair of the council investment committee, as a council board member, and as a merit badge counselor. A cofounder of Forge Capital Partners, Peter serves on the board of trustees of Florida State University and chairs its endowment committee. He is also chair of the State of Florida’s Pension Fund Investment Advisory Council and a board member of the Seminole Boosters. Peter is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Urban Land Institute, and a board member of the Florida Council of 100. Peter and his wife, Jennifer, live in Tampa and attend Christ the King Catholic Church, where he serves on the finance council and chairs a $6 million capital campaign for church renovation. They have three daughters—Carson, Campbell, and Camden—and a son, Carter.

JAMES E. HAMILTON Colleyville, Texas Longhorn Council Hurst, Texas

Jim’s greatest achievement in his 15 years as a Scouting leader has been watching his grandson, Bryan Burch, cross over to Boy Scouts with his Arrow of Light and attending the first-ever OA National Indian Seminar at Philmont in 1974. An Eagle Scout with two Palms, Jim has received the Silver Beaver Award, Wood Badge, the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, and the William D. Boyce New-Unit Organizer Award. He is a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, a Second Century Society member, and a James E. West Fellow. Jim, who has been selected to serve as subcamp chief at the 2021 National Scout Jamboree, serves on the region executive committee, as area president, and as chair of the Colleyville Police Exploring post, which he also founded. Jim has served as subcamp chief at the 2017 National Scout Jamboree, on the staff of the 2019 World Scout Jamboree, and attended the 1973 National Scout Jamboree as a youth. He is the immediate past president of the Longhorn Council and a former vice president. Jim, who earned the rank of Able as a Sea Scout, served as boatswain and assistant Scoutmaster in Cicero, Illinois, for the Chicago Area Council. Jim has served on the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District board of trustees and as president of the Colleyville Citizens on Patrol program. He is a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and has been a volunteer of the year for the Colleyville Police Department. The president and CEO of Selectron Solutions, Jim has served on the Board of Industry Leaders for the Consumer Technology Association and is an adjunct professor in the Gupta College of Business at the University of Dallas. Jim and his wife, Kimberly, live in Colleyville. In addition to their grandson, they have two daughters: Stacey Burch and Stephanie Hamilton.

SUSAN LONG Cary, North Carolina Occoneechee Council Raleigh, North Carolina

During her 33 years in Scouting, Susan was the first female to serve as a Scout leader in her area and council, and the only woman in several of the positions she held. She expresses pride in being a trailblazer for women in Scouting. “I am truly touched that maybe my work has been respected and has allowed females to now be part of the entire Scouts BSA program,” she says. “I’m looking forward to female Eagle Scouts!” Susan has received the Silver Beaver Award, the Wood Badge, the Distinguished Commissioner Service Award, the Doctorate of Commissioner Science Award, the Scouter’s Training Award, the Cub Scouter Award, the District Award of Merit, and the Tiger Cub Den Leader Award. She is a James E. West Fellow. At the area level, Susan is vice president for diversity and inclusion, and she has served on the council executive board for 14 years. She has been a Philmont Training center instructor, area Youth Protection Champion and commissioner, council commissioner and vice president, and district commissioner and chair. She has also served as a chartered organization representative, den leader, pack committee chair, Tiger Cub coordinator, merit badge counselor, and on troop and Venturing crew committees. A childbirth coach and breastfeeding consultant, Susan is also involved with support groups for families in crisis. She taught religious education classes for 25 years, worked with a church youth group for eight years, and coached youth soccer. She also taught elementary school science as a volunteer for six years. Susan attends St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex, where she sings in the choir and serves as cantor, as a eucharistic minister to the homebound, on the bereavement committee, and as a funeral consultant. Susan and her husband, Jim, live in Cary and have five children—Peggy Golden (Justin), Jay Long (Jessica), Nicholas Long (Jane), Douglas Long (Tera), and Becky Edmonds (Jeff)—and nine grandchildren: Madelyn Golden, Pedro Loera-Long, Elizabeth Golden, Nixon Long, Vivian Long, Svetlana Long, Brennan Long, Savannah Long, and Charlene Edmonds.

JAMES H. LYNCH San Antonio, Texas Alamo Area Council San Antonio, Texas

Jim’s time as a ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch is the achievement he’s most proud of in more than 20 years as a Scout leader, but a close second is serving as his youngest son’s den leader. His wife, Dr. Jane Lynch, “volunteered” him for the role while he was off at Army War College, and, he says, “I haven’t stopped volunteering since.” A retired Air Force colonel, Jim has received the Silver Beaver Award, the area and council Venturing awards, and the District Award of Merit. He was the region’s Alumnus of the Year in 2018, and he is a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. A Wolf Scout as a youth, Jim serves on the National Camping Task Force and as program vice chair of the National Venturing Committee, area commissioner, chair of the council’s Strategic Planning Committee and member of its executive board, and an assistant Scoutmaster. Jim has served as Philmont Staff Association president and a vice chair of the National Alumni and Friends Committee. He has also served as region alumni chair, council commissioner, twice as district chair in two different councils, and as a Scoutmaster and Venturing associate Advisor. Jim and Jane live in San Antonio and have two sons—William L. Lynch, an Eagle Scout, and James B. Lynch.

SHERRY McGUGIN Cookeville, Tennessee Middle Tennessee Council Nashville, Tennessee

In 15 years as an adult Scouter, Sherry’s greatest achievement has been her service as a Venturing crew Advisor, mentoring youth as they earned the highest awards in the program: the Silver Award and the Summit Award. She knows the opportunities given to young women and young men in Venturing has positively impacted their lives and their communities. Many of them have continued in servant leadership roles at the national, regional, area, and council levels. Sherry is also proud of her children and their achievements: Thomas, an Eagle Scout and recipient of the Summit Award and Silver Award; Arliss, an Eagle Scout and Summit Award recipient who serves on the National Venturing Committee; and twins Ella and Reece, who are both working on their Pathfinder Awards in Venturing and toward the goal of achieving Eagle rank in Scouts BSA. Sherry has received the national, regional, area, and council Venturing Leadership Awards, the Silver Beaver Award, the Spirit of the Summit Award, the Distinguished Scouter Award, the District Award of Merit, and the United Methodist Cross and Flame Award. She is also a Second Century Society member. The Delta subcamp chair for the upcoming 2021 National Scout Jamboree, Sherry serves on the National Council and as regional Venturing Committee chair and Venturing officers’association Advisor. She has also served as area Venturing Advisor and Exploring chair. On the council level, she is an executive board member, district chair, assistant Scoutmaster, and Venturing Advisor. She has served as pilot course director and course coordinator of National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience at Northern Tier, Venturing Fest subcamp director, on staff at several national jamborees, and as the region’s female Scouts BSA assistant Scoutmaster for the 2019 World Scout Jamboree. Sherry has also served as council Powder Horn course director, council vice president of Venturing, the council’s first female senior patrol leader for Wood Badge, and chair of the host council for the National Annual Meeting. Sherry and her husband, Harry—whose support she credits for enabling her to be a Scouter—live in Cookeville and attend Algood United Methodist Church.

RANDY L. POTTS Summerville, South Carolina Coastal Carolina Council Charleston, South Carolina

Randy’s fondest memories of growing up as a Scout in Wyoming are the winter adventures of digging, playing, and sleeping overnight in snow caves within the drifts. His proudest moments in 31 years as an adult leader have been to witness youth developing confidence and self-reliance as they mature into leadership and service roles. A 2020 recipient of the region’s Alumnus of the Year Award, Randy has also received the Silver Beaver Award, the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, and the Distinguished Council Commissioner Award. He is a Lifetime Investor of the Second Century Society, a World Baden-Powell Fellow, and a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow (OA). An Eagle Scout with five Palms and a Sea Scout of Able rank, Randy is president of the National Organization of Sea Scout Alumni and serves on the National Eagle Scout Association committee, the board of the Sea Base Alumni & Friends Association, and the Scouting Alumni & Friends National Committee. At the region level, he serves as Sea Scout vice commodore, alumni relations chair, and an executive committee member. He also serves as the area alumni relations chair, council representative to the National Council, and executive officer of a Military Exploring post (Indian Waters Council). Randy has served the area as OA associate section adviser and membership chair. He has also served as council vice president of finance and of membership, an OA lodge adviser, district chair and commissioner, and a chartered organization representative. Randy also serves youth through his participation on the American Legion’s National Americanism Commission, National Americanism Council, and Boys’ Nation staff. He is honorary chair of the Royal Society of St. George and a past president of the Fort Sumter–Fort Moultrie Historical Trust. The chief information security officer of the cybersecurity firm RiskIQ, Randy was founding director of the InfraGard program, an FBI–private sector partnership. Randy and his wife, Kimberley, live in Charleston and have eight children—Jyssica, Kevin, Corey, Britania, Koryn, Konstanz, Makayla, and Tiana—and four grandchildren: Bradlee, Easton, Ryker, and Rhettlee.

GLENN C. STONER Lake Wylie, South Carolina Palmetto Council Spartanburg, South Carolina

Glenn’s favorite memories from his youth Scouting days are filled with 50-mile canoe trips, his time spent at Philmont Scout Ranch, and serving as Chief of the Fire for his father’s and brother’s Vigil Honor ceremony. His greatest memories as an adult Scouter revolve around serving with his wife, Elizabeth, on district committee, on staff for Wood Badge, and on staff at national and world Scout jamborees. Glenn, an Eagle Scout with four Silver Palms, has earned the Silver Beaver Award, his Wood Badge beads, the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, 40-year veteran award, the Doctorate of Commissioner Science Award, the Distinguished Commissioner Service Award, the Commissioner Arrowhead Honor, the District Award of Merit, the Scouter’s Key (district committee and commissioner), and the Founder’s Award. He is a life member of the National Eagle Scout Association, a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, and a James E. West Fellow. Glenn serves as president of the Piedmont Appalachian College of Commissioner Science, associate area commissioner, assistant council commissioner, executive board member, and council Wood Badge coordinator. He also serves as an Order of the Arrow committee advisor, and he is a longtime unit commissioner and district committee member. He has served on the National Order of the Arrow Conference staff, as area commissioner, as a longtime staff member for the Piedmont Appalachian College of Commissioner Science, and as a council commissioner, Wood Badge course director and staff member, district commissioner, and troop committee member. A retired engineer with Milliken & Company, Glenn has volunteered locally with Meals on Wheels and the Harvest Day Festival in Inman, South Carolina. He has also participated in and helped organize the annual Earth Run 5K race to promote environmental responsibility. Glenn and Elizabeth—a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow for whom her husband served as guide—live in Lake Wylie, South Carolina.
