IRINA MAKKAI CLASSICAL BALLET & DANCE SCHOOL: THE ART OF DANCE

CITYWOODS: HANDCRAFTED HEIRLOOM-QUALITY CHAIR

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Irina Makkai Classical Ballet and Dance School. Irina Makkai started the school in 1984 at 744 Judson, in the Ravinia neighborhood. Since then, the school has maintained its involvement with the Highland Park community — performing annually at the Tree Lighting Ceremony Nov. 22 at Uncle Dan’s, entering an award-winning float every year in Highland Park’s Fourth of July parade and presenting its annual full-length “Nutcracker” at Elm Place Middle School.

Handcrafted of solid natural American black walnut with an oil finish, this chair sold exclusively at Citywoods, 651 Central Ave., is sculptural and significant. It is at home in a contemporary, minimalist or classic setting. But then you sit in it. Each square of wood moves and adjusts to the contours of your body, relieving stress points, supporting your frame, almost making you feel weightless. Enjoy the feeling of wellness when you sit in this heirloom-quality chair every day. $3,800 as shown. (Chairs start at $3,600, depending on woods.)

“Throughout its 30 years, the school has taught the art of dance to thousands of little girls on the North Shore,” said Dr. Ernest Makkai. “The school maintains its excellence in dance education by limiting class sizes, focusing on the individual needs of its students and keeping a highly trained staff, who not only had outstanding dance careers but also are professionally trained in teaching dance to children.”

STATIONERY STATION: MAKE A NOTE OF IT

The school is located at 2126 First St., in Downtown Highland Park. The 12,000 square-foot facility is designed specifically for the needs of the ballet school with four separate studios, including a smaller studio for it’s younger dancers and a 2,500 square foot studio for the school’s most-advanced students. In addition to classical ballet, the school offers character dance, jazz, tap and modern classes. heresa Chang followed her passion for Chinese and Thai cuisine, which led to the creation of the colorful and urbane Yummy Bowl restaurant — the North Shore’s choice for Chinese and Thai cuisine since 1997. Located at 1908 Sheridan Road in Downtown Highland Park, Yummy Bowl’s menu is inspired by Theresa’s Shanghai touch, which dates back to her mother’s kitchen in China. The sauces, preparation and special menu additions — including the soon-to-come “Shanghai Scramble” (a popular homemade dish from Shanghai) are unique. In addition, more than 20 special gluten-free items were recently created and are available. Inviting experience Yummy Bowl has three enticing dining room sections including a large family section, which is perfect for adults with young children. The vibrant red, yellow and orange interior was created by Theresa’s daughter, Emma. Time to celebrate Over the years, Yummy Bowl has become the go-to place for family and birthday parties, wedding and anniversary celebrations, company events and meetings and holiday parties. A small disc encircled by diamonds and engraved with three initials starts at $135.The price can rise into the thousands depending on the material requested. “This is a totally affordable item. That’s another reason that the girls like it, because it’s something they can have. A lot of things they might like to have, but they’re out of reach,” Garfinkle said. Recently, a grandmother came into the shop and bought a monogram necklace for her granddaughter’s bat mitzvah. Another woman made a monogram out of a special saying that her daughter said. “It’s nice things like that that happen in all jewelry,” says Garfinkle, adding that men’s initial pieces are also available. Cuff links, tie bars, and a new-age type of money clip called a grand band comes in a sterling or gold plate.

Monogrammed orders are completed in approximately two or three weeks and will take longer closer to the holidays — “it’s not just me ordering it; it’s the rest of the country.” “It’s an old thing come back,” Garfinkle said of monogram jewelry. “No trends last forever because styles change, but this is something that could be forever.”

olidays can be a time to come together, relax and eat your heart out. Unfortunately, it’s your heart that you need to keep an eye on. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death for men and women in the United States, and heart attacks are prevalent over the holidays. Navigate the season with these tips in mind. Exercise often “Heart disease occurs yearround, and the best therapy is to be physically fit and healthy and as close to ideal body weight as you can,” said Ian Cohen, MD, medical director of cardiology for Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. Just 45 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise four or five times per week has major beneficial impacts, so stay in an exercise routine over the holidays or while on vacation. Bring your workout indoors to keep from exposing yourself to extreme weather temperatures. Eat smart It’s tempting to ditch those diets during the holidays, but it’s important to stay disciplined when faced with more food, alcohol and stress. Portion control is a

must. Watch alcohol and salt intake, especially if you have hypertension. If you’re diabetic, curb your desire for sugary foods. Read food labels to find low-salt and low-cholesterol options. “I can’t stress enough the importance of fruits and vegetables as a big part of your diet,” Dr. Cohen said. “A protein-based diet with fewer carbs and less fat is good for the heart.” Stress less While it may warm your heart to spend time with loved ones, it can also be a catalyst for anxiety. “Embrace the positive aspects of the holidays, but understand your own triggers,” Dr. Cohen said. Determine stressful situations and weigh your priorities to figure out which environments to avoid, or find a way to make them more positive.

What is your risk?

Even if you’ve never felt symptoms such as chest pressure, shortness of breath, an irregular heartbeat, swelling or fluid retention, you may be at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Find out your risk level using Northwestern Medicine’s simple online Health Assessment Tool at www.healthcheck.nm.org.
