THE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW CLAIMS RECORD AUDIENCE A COUPLE of months since Hall 5 at the NEC darkened once more, Future has released the official BPA audited attendance figure for March’s four-day show – which falls pretty close to our own educated guess at the time: 30,804 ‘pure visitors’ (excluding exhibitor numbers). Its organizer claims this is a 4% increase on 2015. “We ended the 2016 show on a high and it’s fantastic to have our expectations confirmed through the official audit,” enthuses Event
Manager for The Photography Show, Cassandra Grant. “The increase in visitors, and their enjoyment of the event, is also reflected in the hugely positive feedback from our exhibitors; including some of the biggest brands in photography. We’re already looking forward to the 2017 event!” As a case in point, Sony UK’s Head of Imaging Frederik Lange said at the time of our April issue report, echo-ing the views of many
fellow exhibitors: “This show is getting better year on year and is important to the UK market. Visitors are becoming more diverse and we have seen more interested young customers, which for us, is key.” Dates for next year have already been set. The Photography Show will return to the NEC on March 18th to 21st, 2017. www.photographyshow.com

LEICA STRIPPED TO THE ESSENTIALS THE LATEST high cost, high performance camera to bear the Leica branding is the no-nonsense M-D, which has done away with a LCD (becoming the first model in its digital M family without a screen) in order to present a more ‘purist’ approach. In its place on the back of the 24 megapixel camera is an ISO sensitivity dial. The thinking is that by taking this minimalist approach, Leica users will be focused on the most essential aspect – the picture they are taking and the BPI Advert June 16–(Canon).pdf

lack of screen will bring back the filmlike anticipation of discovering the actual result later in the process. “With the exclusion of the LCD, photographers must return to the principles of photography: accurate framing and composition, selecting the appropriate parameters and settings, as well as ensuring that they capture the decisive moment 17/05/2016 15:14
with the thought and consideration that has always been necessary in analogue photography,” enthuses Leica UK MD Jason Heward. “This unique rangefinder camera brings back the fascination and expectation associated with film
– returning photography to its origins, whilst maintaining the obvious convenience and benefits of digital technology.” SRP for the new Leica M-D is £4,650. Uk.leica-camera.com

EPSON SURELAB D3000; MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO SCHOOL LABS AND PRINT LABS WORLDWIDE Since its launch the Epson SureLab SL-D3000 has quickly established itself at the forefront of high quality photographic inkjet printing, particularly in the schools and professional lab market. This phenomenon is not limited to the UK however, as users across the globe have discovered how its ease of use and stunning quality can transform their business.
USA - CS PHOTOGRAPHY “ Our type of work has become very competitive and print quality is a big selling point. Any studio printing 12,000 or more pages of prints a year will find it the most economical machine to print on” The phone rang shortly after Steve Fewell of CS Photography in Louisville, Kentucky had delivered a high-volume job of student and class photos created with his new in-house Epson SureLab SL-D3000 professional dry lab.. A school administrator was on the line commenting about this years ‘exceptional print quality’ and asked if Steve had got a new camera. “No, I just switched to my own in-house lab!” came the response.
QUEST FOR PRINT QUALITY For years Steve, who co-founded CS Photography with his wife Marsha, had seen inconsistency in the image quality produced by the chemical based photo labs he had used. “Despite our best efforts, I seldom saw a perfect print match come back from the wet lab. When he discovered the Epson SureLab SL-D3000 dry lab, Fewell realised his business could profitable deliver large volumes of prints whilst meeting his requirements for high quality at a lower cost-per-print.
THAILAND The Epson SureLab SL-D3000 is very quickly becoming the dry lab of choice amongst Thailand’s elite print labs. With so many images featuring vivid colours it’s no surprise that print quality as well as cost-effectiveness are the main attributes which users speak about. “In the past I literally lived half my life in the darkroom. The Epson SureLab liberated me from this process with its prints that had superior colour, durability and lower overall cost than traditional silver halide ones” Tanit Tanitayawong - Marry Me Studio “I am most impressed when I see the happy smiles of my customers as they receive their prints. The SureLab’s speed, quality and operation finally fulfils a vision I had 50 years ago of what an ideal photo print system should be” Sompong Kitsawad - Ranong Photo Wedding Studio “Our orders for different sizes of photos have been increasing, especially 6x4, 5x7 and 6x8 so the SureLab was ideal for our business. The colour quality, space saving design, ease of use and cost effectiveness are the attributes we value most” Vichai Witoonwitlak - Frame One (Pictured below with his colleagues)
“With prints created by the Epson SureLab, we have the confidence that we’re delivering prints with the kind of quality that will last for generations to come. Having this level of control over pricing and quality will continue to make us more competitive in our market”. Steve’s customers have described his Epson prints as having the WOW factor and he no longer has to deal with Lab fees or delays. Yet another happy Epson SureLab customer.

TETENAL PROMOTION
UK - PSP SCHOOLS “ How good is this machine? Where do I begin and how long have you got!” “Since purchasing the Epson D3000 from Tetenal I have to say that it has exceeded my expectations and they were already high! The print quality is phenomenal and it is so easy to use. The speed versus quality is extremely impressive and this has had a great impact on our business, not only in reduced running costs of the machine itself but also of the time required by our staff.
Paper changing is simplicity itself and the operating interface is easy to learn giving us rapid turnaround time of jobs. As we all know in this business, time is money so the Epson D3000 has been a superb investment and I can’t speak highly enough of it, as you may have noticed! Paul Holmes - Managing Director
FRANCE - SYNERGIE PHOTO UAE - DUBAI
“ The machine works out twice as cheap as others because consumables are more expensive than they used to be. This machine is more economical to maintain and doesn’t cause pollution”
Riot Photobooks is a Dubai based company which specialises in Photo Book printing solutions
Three photographers from Parthenay near Poitiers in France, Isabelle and Phillipe Gaudin together with André Viollier set up Synergie Photo in 2010.
Synergie chose the Dual Roll machine to enable two different sizes of paper to be loaded at a single time together with a sorting tray.
Riot Photobooks initially started their business printing through Large Format Printers and as the business grew they faced two major challenges to.
The original photo studio is located in the town centre and focuses primarily on taking professional photographs of families and children.
The first was printing in smaller sizes because of the difficultly of cutting and changing rolls. The second was the large amount of waste.
THE SURELAB WAS A VERY CAREFULLY CONSIDERED PURCHASE
Even more impressively, the Epson SureLab SL-D3000 installed at Synergie has been installed since November 2012 without a single problem. No wonder they are happy customers!
A number of leading printer manufacturers were considered but fell short because of their high cost and the inconsistency of the print solutions offered. “Epson’s SureLab D3000 has proved to be an ideal solution for us, offering not only excellent quality output, but also maximum cost efficiency.” Rodney Saldanha - Managing Director Since installing the SureLab SL-D3000, Riot Photobooks reported key improvements in the colour quality of their prints and faster processing. They have also noticed an increase in returning customers that can be attributed to the high quality and excellent presentation of the final product.
“We spent a long time looking at what’s happening in digital printing before making a decision” says André. “through Tetenal, who supplied us with our chemicals for the traditional print lab, we discovered Epson’s digital printing solutions. After investing in a Stylus Pro 7890 LFP, Synergie began searching for a high-speed photo production system. After testing competitor machines, the managers of Synergie Photo decided on the Epson SureLab SLD3000. “The main reasons were the production quality, the level of productivity, the purchase price and Epson’s reputation which is well known to photographers. The additional benefits are the clean management of the machine and being able to change the paper in broad daylight!”.
UK - HYTHE PHOTOGRAPHIC “ Our staff love the ease of use and versatility and our customers are staggered at the amazing clarity” Graham Marsden - Co-Owner Hythe Photographic and Electrical are extremely proud owners of an Epson SureLab SL-D3000 which replaced their old lab. “After a day with Tetenal putting the DL3000 through its paces, we knew this was the dry minilab for us. The print quality was far superior to the competition we’d seen and it was a great deal financially. Our customers agree and are staggered at the amazing clarity and quality even compared to our old Fuji Dry Lab.
We’ll leave the last words to Graham. “We are also really please with the support we’ve received from Tetenal’s technical team during and after the install. The Epson was a great investment and we’ve never regretted the decision.
Come and see for yourself how the Epson SureLab SL-D3000 can revolutionise your business by visiting our dedicated showroom, centrally located in Leicester
The machine produces stunning B & W prints and local camera clubs are flocking to is in their droves.”
Official Distributors Epson Photographic Print Solutions
Sue, another member of the Hythe team is impressed with the Epson operating system “with over 20 years experience working in mini labs, I have to say the Epson lab software is by far the easiest software I’ve used, and I’ve used a few!”.

ROTOLIGHT – MASTER OF LIGHT BPI News heads over to Pinewood Studios to witness a live shoot from Rotolight ‘master of light’ Jason Lanier, utilising its much-praised Neo and new Anova Pro LED lights; discovering why they’re well worth stocking and pitching to your photographer and videographer customers, with good, competitive trade margins to be had…
M
arking the Anova Pro’s UK debut, we were invited along to a lighting workshop hosted by Rotolight brand ambassador and ‘master of light’ Jason Lanier at the company’s Pinewood Studios base – at which both the Neo and the Anova Pro were demo’d before a live audience. Settling into a comfy seat in the John Barry theatre – located right on Goldfinger Avenue, as if that wasn’t exciting enough – this was the first chance many of us in the UK got to see the new light (announced in BPI News May) in action. What’s special is that this is
the world’s first continuous LED light that can not only provide a continuous light output for those wishing to shoot stills or videos, but at the same time provide a flash sync at 150% of the maximum brightness plus remote triggering, providing a replacement for traditional strobe photographers’ mono blocks. It can act as an accurate modelling light and affords control over flash power and duration, plus colour temperature. In short, rather than having to buy a separate light for continuous light and a separate light for flash photography, this is one product that can do both.
“What this light does is that it gives photographers in the right circumstances the ability to take one light and be able to accomplish pretty much anything.” – Jason Lanier, Rotolight photographer ambassador “Rotolight asked me what I’d like to see in lights,” Jason told those
in attendance. “I said: ‘Make ‘em flash’. I never thought they’d make an LED flash but they have.” The photographer had been able to play with two Anova Pro prototypes for around a month and detailed how he had really put it through its paces – treating them like final working samples. “I’ve wanted to see what these lights could do creatively. I’m able to use them with reflectors, offcamera flash and even the Neos. You can put any high-speed sync trigger into the back of them. I talked to Rotolight and asked if I could shoot up to 11fps with the Anova Pro. The answer was yes. It’s remarkable.”

ANOVA PRO Q&A WITH PHOTOGRAPHER JASON LANIER
Rod with brand ambassador Jason Lanier
BPI News: What would be your three key selling points if pitching the Anova Pro to a prospective customer? “For me, the Anova Pro’s key selling points are that it flashes high speed sync, that it’s brighter than the previous versions of the Anova, plus you can change the colour temperature on it, which is huge. And now that Rotolight are coming out with light modifiers like the Chimera softboxes, diffusers and barn doors, and understanding that they’ve got to provide those, it’s even more of a big deal.”
This Jason Lanier shot reveals the Anova Pro is equally adept used on location
The fact that you can get the full package from one manufacturer is a bonus?
As we touched on in our May issue, there are three iterations of the Anova Pro available to buy. Retailing at 25% less than the previous model (whilst being a whopping 43% brighter), the Anova Pro is available in either Bi-Colour (6300K-3150K) ‘Standard’ 50 beam angle (for greater straight line output), 110 ‘Ultrawide’ (for soft-fill, flood or Chromakey), or fixed colour 5600K. The latter retails at £999.99 SRP, whilst the ‘Standard’ and ‘Ultrawide’ are £1049.99, all prices excluding VAT. Optional Wi-Fi models are available separately, arriving in Q4, which have the advantage of allowing the light to be controlled via Magic Eye iPhone or iPad App (available in the fourth quarter). In terms of how to pitch the Anova Pro – or even the Neo – to your customers, photographer Jason Lanier has some advice:
“LED lighting lets us see what we’re going to get before we take the shot; you can see the shadows, you can see the bounce. The easiest way to learn lighting is with LED’s. You’re not bogged down with light meters. The Anova Pro doesn’t require a recycling time. And your post-production time goes down because you’re editing in-camera. If you were to use the Anova Pro at a wedding, it knocks out any other bad lighting in the vicinity to give you ‘Hollywood lighting’. “Another plus is that the batteries go on forever. But for me what makes the difference is that it’s an LED that flashes.” As ever with Rotolight products, good competitive margins are available to trade partners. See bottom black line to get in touch with Rotolight direct regarding the Anova Pro. www.rotolight.com
“Right. You don’t have to go out and find it. I love that you can buy the Chimera stuff from Rotolight. But the thing that’s a game changer is the flash. If I’m outside and I’m shooting any sort of portrait, then I’m going to use the flash because it’s brighter. I really enjoy the flash for that reason. Plus, when you fire continuous shots with LED you’ll get blur, whereas when you fire with flash it freezes the frame. That’s one of the biggest changes the Anova Pro offers. Before we could shoot someone throwing stuff around or dancing but there would be motion blur. Now, with a flash, you can freeze frame it a bit better.” Presumably there will be occasions when you do actually want a bit of motion blur, though, for creative reasons? “Absolutely. But what’s neat about this light is that it’s an all-in-one. When I start talking to people and
comparing it to other mono lights I say it’s also a beautiful massive LED. When it comes to mono lights and their lamps, they’re really giving off very little light in comparison.” So in terms of what it brings to the pro’s creative arsenal, is it really the flexibility that’s key for you? “What this light does is that it gives photographers in the right circumstances the ability to take one light and be able to accomplish pretty much anything. That, to me, is the biggest difference the Anova Pro provides. What we’ve done traditionally is bring LEDs and then bring flashes – and that’s a lot of gear. Plus, the other thing that’s huge about it is the battery life. The battery in flash mode will last for days, whereas when you’re firing mono lights using flash they’ll run out pretty quick in an hour or two. These will go for days. “It’s a collaborative effort – when Rod spoke to me about this, he asked for feedback. So we talked about how they could design the light and what photographers would look for and he and I would Skype and I would say ‘this is what photographers think.’ He’d speak to me in engineering terms and I’d just reply back in photography terms. All I want to know is how fast does it shoot, how bright is it, how long is it going to last, how long does it take the batteries to recharge? That’s all I want to know. And so I try and take a commonsense approach to photography so I can relate that information to all the photographers who want to listen. We have over 100,000 followers on YouTube, so when we live stream it or release it, it’s going everywhere.”

Plenty to rave about ‘Epson Print & Save’ “Print & Save is for businesses who are able to estimate how much ink they’re going to use over a three year period and is a contract with Epson facilitated by us as the re-seller,” explains DPS Group MD Maneesh Patel. “The customer needs to know how much ink they’re going to use and it only works when they’ve bought new hardware. “So when Folio Albums ordered their seven new printers from us, an estimation was made as to how much ink they might use over the three years of the scheme. A set direct debit goes out every month to Epson; it’s as straightforward as a phone contract. Via Epson‘s secure online portal, Folio Albums request ink, maintenance tanks and other supplies up to the contracted value, plus there is the peace of mind of a three-year enhanced warranty from Epson. It’s for discerning companies and customers
Satisfied customer Stewart Randall of Folio Albums says: “We have a long standing relationship with the DPS Group and Epson printers. I was looking for the best value and those guys came in with the best value product – plus my ton of research had suggested Epson was the best in terms of quality. “We wanted the large format “Print & Save is for printers to be able to produce our businesses who are able biggest books. FUJIFILM ROLLS OUT SUMMER BODY + LENS CASHBACK Not content with winning products at last month’s TIPA Awards and the X-Pro2 taking our own BPI News Product of the Year, until the end of August the manufacturer has seasonal deals on its XF lenses & X-series cameras to tempt your customers to spend, plus a new teleconverter lens to sell
I
f you read our double page TIPA award round-up last issue you’ll be aware that Fujifilm scored a trio of gongs: the X-T10 garnered Best Entry Level Mirrorless CSC, Best Expert Mirrorless CSC for the X-Pro2, plus its XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lens bagged Best CSC Telephoto Zoom Lens. As if that wasn’t enough, Fujifilm also took our own Product of the Year for the X-Pro2. In short, it appears the X series has gone from strength to strength of late in terms of critical reception and sales too – and now there is a summer cashback deal to further entice your customer base. As the point of sale material on this page reveals, the current promotion runs from June 1st until August 31st, offering your customers up to £120 cashback on XF lenses or double the cashback when bought with selected X-Series cameras. The latter deal applies to sales of the X-Pro2 and X-E2s bodies (plus 1855mm X-E2s kit), along with the X-T1
body and 18-55mm and 18-135mm lens kits – when bought along with 18 lens options. The maximum £120 cashback applies to the XF100400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens. Full T&C’s and a list of qualifying products can be found at www.fujifilm.co.uk
Convert customers to Fujifilm Also new from Fujifilm and arriving at the end of June is its Fujinon Teleconverter XF2X TC WR, which is £349 SRP. As one might expect it is designed to extend the range of particular mirrorless X mount lenses (see following paragraph) by twice. The optical design involves a construction of 9 elements in 5 groups to maintain the optical performance of the original lens, says Fuji. Furthermore the teleconverter is both weather and dust resistant, and can operate in temperatures down to -10°C, which means it is an
ideal match for use with the X-T1 and X-Pro2 camera bodies and XF50140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR and XF100400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lenses. The high-grade metal exterior of the teleconverter has been designed with the X system in mind, so when attached to a compatible Fujinon lens the two products appear as one single lens. A firmware upgrade is also being touted by the manufacturer, available at the beginning of June, to ensure that full compatibility is offered with the lenses above.

PHOTOXPORT SUMMER PROMO
GO GREEN ‘II’ WITH PHOTOXPORT AND Need a duplex dry lab with the potential to expand your product offerings and your customer base this summer? Noritsu’s mighty QSS ‘Green II’, distributed in the UK by PhotoXport, should be your go-to machine…
S
pring into summer is traditionally the time when cameras and lenses come out of hibernation and an increased amount of images are captured (adding to the millions constantly snapped on a phone) – with families wanting prints or a photo book keepsake of their annual holiday being an obvious reason to head to their local minilab or photo retailer. If you’re looking for a powerful workhorse to replace an existing tired lab and keep up with such demand, or simply want a machine capable of coping with high volumes, then Noritsu’s QSS Green II dry lab is worth investigation. As detailed previously in BPI News, the Green II offers the industrial build of a traditional wet lab yet with a dry lab engine. It’s been built for a hammering and to produce millions and millions of prints; in fact over 3,000 prints can be produced before new paper needs loading. Retailers who have migrated from traditional silver halide Agx wet printing to Noritsu dry labs are impressed with the significant increase in print quality. And their consumers have noticed too. “Our customers are definitely happy,” says Sean Numann, owner of Snappy Snaps
Cambridge. “They started comparing the new prints they were getting with older images and seeing how sharp and bright the colours were now in comparison. I’ve even had customers coming back and wanting to re-print all the old photos they had! So I would recommend it.” See the Green II video at: youtu.be/0BPCnR5Zpvo
Evolved to perfection “The Green II’s cassette-loading capability is a unique feature and key selling point, ensuring ease of use,” outlines PhotoXport MD Derek Fieldhouse, exclusive UK distributor for Noritsu. “The other it is that it allows for the automatic sorting of prints. We believe this lab has ‘evolved to perfection’. It’s the de facto best quality, highest capacity industrial build dry minilab on the market.
Phoenix Photographic’s Dave Rasch is so pleased with the performance of the Green II dry lab that he is considering adding a second Noritsu printer to the business
“The Green II’s cassette-loading capability is a unique feature and key selling point, ensuring ease of use. We believe this lab has ‘evolved to perfection’. It’s the de facto best quality, highest capacity industrial build dry minilab on the market” – Derek Fieldhouse, PhotoXport MD It’s also got one of the best ‘up time’ records of them all; forget downtime, we talk about up time, because we have a machine running that hasn’t gone down once in a year.” Sean Numann, owner/manager of Snappy Snaps, Cambridge adds: “There are so many dry labs in the market but I trust the Noritsu brand. I also chose the machine because it’s duplex – enabling us to offer photo books and calendars in store, instead of out-sourcing them – whilst the size of it isn’t huge. Here you also have twin magazines to give you high volume printing. “This enables us to give special discounts and special offers, because it puts us in control of photo gifts, such as photo books. Before, because we were out-sourcing, we needed to pay postage charges on top. In terms of customer support PhotoXport are very good and are always at the other end of the phone line. When you want them, they are there.”
A second satisfied customer is Dave Rasch of Phoenix Photographic. “PhotoXport are a very fair and flexible company to deal with – they listen to what the customer wants, which is more of a rarity these days. With Derek there’s no hard sell. We’re given the information and it’s up to us to make our minds up. I think there’s a lot to be said for that because it shows confidence in the product being sold. “We’re so pleased with the Green II that we’re looking at adding the standard Green lab to our set up. We can do various sizes nice and quick and we can also do double sided for photobooks, cards and invitations. So it’s added to our business. We didn’t want to give people the excuse to go somewhere else instead of keeping them as a customer. It was a very easy choice to be honest with you. It was always going to be when the quality was right and when the price per print was correct. And I believe that time is now.”
Want to talk business? Talk to Derek As to the cost of installing a Green II into your business, PhotoXport is, to quote Derek, ‘always doing deals’. Get in touch now on 0116 2675907 to find out how you can offer your customers a premium quality product at a very competitive price.
Pride of the place in the Noritsu line up is the industrial built Green II dry lab - with its unique cassette loading capability and automatic sorting of prints saving you time - and money!

W
e seem to be taking on more new brands than ever before at the moment,” responds an enthusiastic David Parkinson, MD of Wilkinson Cameras, when asked about the retailer’s annual Digital Splash show, set to re-appear ‘bigger and better’ this coming October. “Names like Elinchrom, Bowens, Hasselblad will be appearing for the first time, joining the likes of Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus and Fujifilm who regularly attend. As a punter you will see all the big names you’d expect to be there!” As you’ll note from the advert opposite, the dates for your diary are Saturday October 15th and Sunday 16th – the first time that Digital Splash has been spread across two days, which in itself sends out a very positive message. “With it being held in a cultural city such as Liverpool, with lots going on, we believe people will come for the whole weekend,” says David. “Some photographers will undoubtedly come both days. We’ve got eight speakers doing 16 presentations, with different people talking on different days. So that may encourage people to stay over, as will the lots of other events we’ve organised to get people there and keep them there!”
“We’ve set ourselves an ambitious target of 10,000 visitors, but Digital Splash is going to be much more heavily promoted and hosted in a prestigious venue. We’re going from a dealer show to much more premier league.” – David Parkinson, MD, Wilkinson Cameras Bigger venue, broader show, wider audience When asked for the key reasons why members of the trade should be exhibiting at the show, David responds: “What we’re trying to do is expand the audience. The show has always been about the hardcore, semi
pro, enthusiast market. We’re trying to expand that out considerably … we’re looking to promote it more to the top end of the market and involve the pro photo magazines. “Additionally, pro video is obviously becoming a bigger part of the market, and so too will it play a bigger part in our show, with all the accessories that go along with it. Appealing more to the consumer will be new categories, such as action cameras, drones and sports optics, which we’ve never had at the show before. We’re really aiming at a much broader audience than ever before, which is why feel we’re going to bring in the extra visitors – with our projection being 10,000 across the two days. We’ve set ourselves an ambitious target but Digital Splash is going to be much more heavily promoted and hosted in a prestigious venue. We’re going from a dealer show to much more premier league…” The venue in question is the ACC Liverpool (www.accliverpool.com) – a new building boasting an enviable waterside location in the city. And for those seeking to book space at the show, who don’t perhaps have their own stand in storage, Wilkinson Cameras is offering a bespoke shell scheme system – see Platinum, Gold

and Sliver packages on the advert opposite, for the differing sizes and options. “Once you’ve chosen one of our packages you’re good to go,” promises David Parkinson. “All you’ve got to do is turn up with your merchandise, do the show and leave. The rest of it is all taken care of. We’re very conscious that people are time poor these days – so this is a very simple solution. Bigger manufacturers have chosen that they want to do their own thing, as they have stands already prepared, and that is an option too, to have the space only. But for those who don’t, the bespoke packages are a very attractive option.”

TETENAL UK HITS 30+ THE LEICESTER based photographic distributor has swollen the ranks of its staff to 32 in total with the addition of new member Dave Beck, who brings with him over 30 years’ worth of experience in the photographic industry. He started his career in the Leicester branch of Jacobs where he looked after the darkroom and studio areas and sold Tetenal chemistry and papers. “It’s gone full circle for me in that I am still seeing packs of Neofin and Eukobrom on the shelves which I was selling back in the 1980’s – although not the same packages I might add,” says Dave. “Tetenal is not only a great photographic brand in its own right but as the UK’s leading distributor it has some
superb brands and products in its portfolio. I look forward to meeting customers old and new and helping recommend the products that work for them.” Dave is handling studio products including California Sunbounce light modifiers, SunSniper camera straps, Savage accessories and Tetenal Paper Background Rolls. Tetenal Marketing Manager Craig Bird concludes: “We are delighted to have someone with Dave’s wealth of experience on board as we continue to grow. It’s easy for people to forget how big Tetenal are, but with our staff covering Sales, Marketing and Technical Support, alongside the Administrative, Accounts and Logistics teams, we have over 30 people here in the UK now – and we are always looking to add to our team to help with our continued growth.” www.tetenaluk.com

nvesting in any lab service for your photo business is a big decision. However DNP has made that decision easier with the launch of its combined printer, software and order terminal. The SnapLab + DP-SL620 (see advert opposite) marries its 6-inch DS620 printer to a 10.1-inch order terminal, the DS-Tmini, to provide the complete package. The idea is that, for a small initial investment, you can start your photo business right away. Advantages of the DP-SL620 include its tiny footprint of 0.11 square metres, plus the fact that the DS620 printer is equipped with a rewind feature to optimise media consumption. Part of this optimisation is the ability to print multiple print sizes from a single set of media, as covered in BPI News previously. The DP-SL620 can also produce prints in nine different sizes up to 6x9-inches (15x23cm) – with the ability to offer your customers a square format to print for Instagram snaps. Formatting photos is easy
thanks to an on-screen step by step guide, whilst the device has the ability to utilise both wired and wireless connections. DNP believes that as the growth of printing from mobile phones becomes more widespread, the demand for instant prints from photo kiosks, such as this set up, is also growing. STOCK UP FOR SUMMER WITH KENRO
Looking for award winning and innovative photo products offering great sales margins? Kenro MD Paul Kench updates us on the latest from Nissin and Sevenoak, and introduces new photo frame options “Sony is going great guns on a worldwide basis at the moment – and the form of the i40 and i60A lends itself to those mirrorless cameras; hence why Nissin is also bringing out the Fuji and Four Third fits early on,” reveals Kenro ‘s MD Paul Kench. “As the Fuji X series is doing very well in the UK, the compatible Nissin flash is also doing very well!” SRP for the Nissin i60A is £287.94 inc VAT. Part of your pitch to customers is that the Nissin i60A is the smallest and lightest in the high power portable flash market segment.

Smooth and steady sales potential
W
e like to try and be ahead of the game at BPI News – and so it was in our April issue we brought you news of Nissin’s ultra portable i60A flashgun (above) for mirror-less cameras, which last month picked up a TIPA Award for Best Portable Flash. As its exclusive distributor for the UK, Kenro is due to have stock available of the Sony fit in June – with Fujifilm and Four Thirds (Olympus & Panasonic) arriving in August, plus the Canon and Nikon following on in November.
Likewise new from Kenro is an even wider range of Sevenoak stabilisers for photographers shooting video. Again, products for the Sony Alpha series – particularly Sevenoak’s portable aluminium ‘camera cages’ – are selling particularly well. There are also models to fit Blackmagic and Panasonic cameras, such as the SK-GHC20 cage kit, which adds protection, stability and mounting options to the camera (such as the ability to attach it to a slider for seamless video pans). SRP is £209.94. A second potential ‘hero’ item to flag up is the new Sevenoak Camera Stabiliser Pro (above, right). Sizes are available to accommodate small, medium or large camera set ups, with SRP’s ranging from £143.94 to £215.94 respectively. Allowing for smooth shooting with a DSLR, even if running up and down stairs, this item comes with a flexible handgrip, three-axis gimbal, adjustable counterweight discs, front and back trim screws and quick-release camera mounting platform. The SK-SW Pro1 model is designed for smaller DSLRs
weighing up to 2.5kg, and features removable counterweights along with aluminium and carbon fibre construction for both strength and portability, whilst big brother the Pro2 can support cameras up to 3kg. Likewise, use of Camera Sliders (see below) can ensure your customers’ videos resemble something out of Hollywood. Sevenoak has six different sliders available in three different lengths in its ‘standard’ range and two different lengths in its heavy-duty range, plus an ultra light carbon fibre slider. SRP’s vary from £89.94 to £359.94. Paul Kench adds: “We are very proud to be the exclusive agency for Sevenoak in the UK and Ireland. As you can see, the full range is really outstanding in terms of build quality and functionality. As ever at Kenro, we have chosen a manufacturer that not only matches our own high standards, but also produces gear at a price point to compete extremely well in this growing market sector.
Kenro is also ‘on trend’ when it comes to displaying images – with a couple of new wooden frames to share in its Torino and Rocco series. “Demand for wood frames has increased in 2016 and we are catering to this by providing two new designs – one with a vintage finish in the Torino and another, in the Rocco, with a classic finish,” enthuses Paul. “Both should therefore slot neatly into any home environment, whether period or contemporary.” The Torino frame is available in 8x6 or 8x10 inches. The Rocco series offers three colours and four sizes (7x5, 8x6, 8x10 and 12x10). Whether you choose Torino, Rocco or both, each series is supplied with freestanding easel back and individually shrink wrapped with bubble bag to keep it safe. Prices start at £9.30 SRP for a 7x5-inch Rocco frame, and at £17.58 for the 8x6-inch Torino.
Catering to increased demand: Two new additional wooden frame options to sell this summer!

LONG-TERM TRADE MEMBER CONVERTS TO FUJIFILM FDIS
Fujifilm’s Marketing Manager Peter Wigington has long preached the value of retailers and minilabs joining the Fujifilm Digital Imaging Service network. This month we hear from a recent convert to the ‘cause’ – Peter Rogers Photographic in Stafford, a retailer with a long and distinguished history….
P
eter Rogers Photographic has been in business since 1946 – so obviously knows very well what it takes to remain in business through myriad market changes, technological shifts and an evolving customer base. Now run by Anthony Rogers, a wedding photographer by trade and member of the British Institute of Professional Photographers, who took over the Stafford-based store in the mid 1980s, its latest evolution has involved it joining Fujifilm’s countrywide network of
Fujifilm Digital Imaging Service (FDIS) members. As a result it has recently re-branded the store with fresh Fujifilm signage to show off its new and increased range of photofinishing and photo gifting services. The retailer prides itself on its knowledgeable staff offering friendly impartial advice. With a customer profile described as ‘broad’, “We’ve been at our present premises since 1959,” Anthony reveals – incredible in itself. “We used to outsource our photo processing, when it was all film, to Kodak and Colorama. Then, when digital came along, we thought we should get our own lab, because we had uhm’d and ahh’d for years about getting a chemical lab, but parting with £100,000 seemed a lot of money. “We went to Focus on Imaging and looked at the dry labs there, but we didn’t want something with a lot of bells and whistles, just a ‘box’ that would print. We originally got a Fujifilm lab eight years ago mainly for printing our own wedding and portrait work. We then put a kiosk in and battled along. We were probably one of the first retailers to put a dry lab in their store in our area. We had a Jessops in the town that closed, and its manager opened
a photo store – Stafford Photo Centre – and was a FDIS member. He subsequently decided to move his business online, so that inspired us to seize the opportunity to get the ‘full blown’ FDIS experience. “We’d known Fujifilm for a long time, Peter Wigington’s a great guy. They’re very ‘switched on’. Only a day after having our conversation, the lady from the sign people was on the phone – and next thing was we

They’re on the ball and everything moved very quickly; signs are up now and we’re fine.” Anthony’s set up currently comprises two self-service Fujifilm Imagine kiosks front-of-house, a Frontier-S DX100 in the shop to do instant prints, plus an original DL400 drylab upstairs. “We’ve also got the Imagine smartphone app so customers can go online and order,

New face in the frame which we didn’t have before. In terms of competition, there isn’t really anybody else in the town now.” To shout about its range of services, Peter Rogers Photographic has added brand spanking new Fujifilm signage to the front and side of its store. Inside too, Anthony and his staff have created a new area for the kiosks, “and if things keep progressing the way they are, I can envisage needing to add another kiosk to that. People are taking advantage of the kiosks, plus ordering online as well. We come in, in the morning, look on
the computer monitor, see there is an order for 300 prints, and people just come in and collect them. The message about the app does seem to be getting through; people like the sound of it and the fact they can do their order at home, and come in and collect, as with photo books.” If you’re looking to refresh and update your store by signing up to become a member of the Fujifilm Digital Imaging Service – with all the marketing advice and POS tools that come with it, as usual the man to contact is Peter Wigington on the contact details shown below.
Fujifilm UK has a new Digital Media & Marketing Assistant in Louise Dickens, who further strengthens the brand’s marketing team. Working alongside FDIS Marketing Manager Peter Wigington, her responsibilities include maintaining social media pages for Fujifilm Imagine and increasing customer engagement across all social media platforms, in order to inform and educate on photo printing. Having graduated university with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, in her spare time, book-loving Louise runs her blog ‘Dickens Does Books’. She joins Fujifilm from Bedford-based digital agency Aptitude, where she was a Digital Marketing Executive. “In my new role, I’m hoping to use everything I currently know about digital marketing to grow engagement, traffic and sales for Fujifilm Photo Imaging services, in particular Fujifilm Imagine and Fujifilm Create Photobooks,” enthuses Louise. “Along the way I hope to continue to learn and adopt the latest industry techniques to further enhance my own capabilities, and use them to create strong brands that lead in their competitive fields.”
A taste of Wonder: Fujifilm hits the road Regular BPI News readers may be familiar with the all-in-one concept of the Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop – with retail emporiums currently doing business in Japan, Barcelona, Singapore, Colombia and New York. In the UK, the concept – a shop built around a range of services to allow the smartphone generation to express their creativity (whether via digital or analogue services, such as Fujfilm Instax products) – was most recently referenced by Fujifilm’s stand at The Photography Show back in March. Now, however, Fujifilm is expanding on the concept by taking the show on the road in the UK this summer. Kicking off on July 18th and running through
until September 4th, the Wonder Photo Tour will be stopping at locations including the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, New Forest & Hampshire County Show, Chatsworth House, Nottingham
Riverside Festival, Clacton Airshow, Bournemouth Air festival and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Show. “Our intention is to create an immersive and fun brand
experience that inspires, entertains and educates consumers about the fun of photos and how photos can make a home,” explains Peter Wigington. “We’re driving awareness of the Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop concept and also engaging customers by offering a free photo magnet. We want to illustrate the fantastic range of photo products that you can have around the home, educate consumers about the Instax range of photo products by offering instant Instax photos and demonstrate and educate consumers about our Imagine photo app – encouraging them to download the app to their phones. We’ll have fun ‘photo walls’ to encourage consumers to take photos at the experience itself and – naturally – encourage customers to then share their experience on social media.”

FAR-FLUNG NEWS WITH LOCAL CONSEQUENCES As a butterfly flaps its wings in one part of the world, a hurricane is happening in another – so runs the old adage. Reminded of this, BPI News examines the effects of the April 2016 earthquakes in Japan on the photo trade internationally, and on the UK industry in particular…
M
ost of us will recall instantly the dramatic and devastating TV images of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011 and the subsequent impact, not only nationally, but internationally; the after effects handled with impressive stoicism by the Japanese themselves. Though the earthquakes in Kumamoto in Japan in April this year (beginning on the 14th) weren’t quite on the same scale in terms of devastation, there have again been ramifications internationally nonetheless. As just one of those big names in the trade affected, Nikon was one of the first to put out a statement of condolence and sympathy; just as quickly informing us of the effect it would have on its own products and business. ‘The suppliers of parts for Nikon products such as digital cameras with interchangeable lenses, interchangeable lenses, and compact digital cameras, including those mentioned above, have been affected,” its statement read. “As such, this will inevitably impact our production and supply of products. “We are currently investigating the situation, and will announce the details as soon as they are confirmed. We apologise to our customers, business partners and all those who have expressed interest in these models for the delays. We are making every effort to bring these models
to market at the earliest possible date without compromising on our standards and the total Nikon product experience.”
THINKING OF JAPAN 2016
Sensors working overtime It’s easy to see why the earthquakes may have had an impact on the digital imaging trade wider afield – even if the depth of said impact was still to be accurately assessed and revealed at the time of writing. Sony, which supplies sensor technology to the majority of the trade, also put out a series of its own statements in response to the Kumamoto earthquake. It revealed assembly operations had been affected, with various suspensions and delays in force during May at its semiconductor manufacturing plant in the region. This, it stated, was the primary manufacturing site of image sensors for digital cameras and security cameras, as well as micro display devices. On a more positive note, assembly operations were expected to have re-started beginning May 17th. The statement also talked of ‘water-processing operations’ on the lower layers of the building being expected to re-commence beginning May 21st. There was also a hint of positivity in the conclusion that: ‘Although there was a delay in the supply of components to Sony from certain third-party suppliers that
also have manufacturing facilities in the Kumamoto region, inventory adjustments have been made and a timeframe for regaining supply levels is now in place, so no material impact is anticipated on Sony’s business operations.’ That said, it has added that: ‘Regarding the Devices and Imaging Products & Solutions segments, the impact on Sony’s consolidated results due to the effect of the earthquakes, including from opportunity losses, as well as expenses for recovery and reinforcement work, continues to be evaluated.’ In the meantime, Sony employee donations from its operations in Japan and around the world to aid the earthquake relief effort and provide emergency support measures were said to have so far exceeded 30 million yen (or £188K, as of May 23rd). The company has said that it will match employee
donations and the money will be put towards mid-to-long term recovery measures for ‘the next generation.’
You can’t rush perfection… Latest updates from Nikon are that its previously announced cameras in the A900 and B700 will now arrive in July. The Nikon KeyMission 360 action camera will now be available in October 2016, as more time is required for software adjustment, the company says. In addition, its three new premium compact cameras in Nikon DL18-50 f/1.8-2.8, DL24-85 f/1.8-2.8 and DL24-500 f/2.8-5.6, originally scheduled for release in June 2016, are now delayed due to issues with the integrated circuit for image processing built into the cameras (again, Nikon’s own words). The new release date was yet to be determined at the time of writing. Naturally we will keep you posted!
Coming attractions: the wait can only increase anticipation for Nikon’s good looking collection of new cameras, including the high end ‘DL’ models

ecause retail involves long hours, late nights and weekend work, employees in the sector regularly rank their entitlement to annual leave as one of the most important benefits they receive from their employer – and so many spend a significant amount of time planning what they will do during their time off. From an employer’s perspective, however, dealing with an employee’s right to annual leave can cause headaches,

BPI NEWS BUSINESS ADVICE
especially if it coincides with staff calling in sick, thereby leaving a shop short of staff. Mark Stevens, a solicitor at Veale Wasbrough Vizards, says that employees are entitled to 5.6 weeks’ annual leave per year. This equates to 28 days per year for those who work five days a week. Stevens adds that a part time worker’s allowance is reduced pro rata and public holidays can count towards annual leave. For the more irregular worker – say those working shifts – the situation is more complex. Stevens adds: “Here an employer must calculate leave based on the average shifts worked during the 12-week period immediately prior to the requested leave period.” Naturally the law only sets the minimum and so an employer is free to offer more than statutory holiday, with the extra holiday considered as ‘contractual holiday entitlement’.
Banking on public holidays Contrary to popular myth, there is no statutory right to bank or public holidays (not that retail is bothered by them these days). Which is why, practically speaking, Stevens says the first thing to consider is the contract of employment: “If, for instance, the contract says that staff are entitled to ‘28 days’ holiday plus bank or public holidays’ then obviously employees are contractually entitled to take bank or public holidays off.” In contrast, if the employee does not have a written contract, or their contract states that the employee is entitled only to ‘statutory holiday’ then, says Stevens, the employee has no express legal right to bank or public holidays. He adds: “If an

employee wishes to take leave on a bank or public holiday it will be a matter for discussion with the employer, as any other request for leave on any other day of the year would be.” Of course, there is still a risk that employees may gain the right to bank or public holidays if the business always allows them to take this time off. Parity with full time workers extends to part-timers in terms of contractual rights to bank or public holidays, as they have a right to a pro-rata equivalent of their full time colleagues. “It does not matter that the part time worker does not normally work on the day on which the bank or public holiday falls,” Stevens says. “So, an employee who works Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday will be entitled to 3/5ths of the annual bank or public holidays occurring that year, even though they never actually work on a Monday or Friday.”
How much pay? Getting down to the nuts and bolts of pay, the law says employees are entitled to a week’s pay for each week of annual leave. Stevens states that for employees with normal, regular, hours of work, this generally means their basic salary without any bonus or irregular payments taken into account. But calculating a week’s pay becomes more complicated where an employee’s pay fluctuates (say where pay is linked to a shift pattern that varies). In these circumstances, holiday pay will be based on their average pay during those normal working hours over the previous 12 working weeks.
Other rights The European Court of Justice (ECJ) recently found that a salesman paid partly by regular salary and partly by commission should be paid holiday pay that includes commission. If shop staff are paid commission, employers need to apply the ruling. In addition, an Employment Appeal Tribunal found that guaranteed overtime payments should also be taken into account when calculating holiday pay. When the right to annual
leave was first introduced, casual workers with irregular working patterns were often given ‘rolled up holiday pay’ (their holiday pay included within their regular wage payments) by their employers, in order to try to avoid paying an employee while they were not in work. The ECJ, as Stevens points out, ruled that rolled up holiday pay is unlawful as it means that a worker receives no pay while they are actually on holiday.
Handling holiday requests Making holiday requests is one thing, but getting permission can be another. Says Stevens: “Where an employee wants to take holiday at an inconvenient time, an employer can serve a counternotice on an employee to state that their holiday request cannot be accommodated.” Here the counter notice must be given at least as many calendar days before the requested leave, as the number of days which the employer is refusing. Stevens says it’s also possible for employers to give notice ordering an employee to use their statutory holiday on specified dates. But, as with normal holiday request refusals, this notice must be at least twice the length of the period of leave that the employee is being ordered to take.
Unused holiday The subject of what to do with unused holiday often arises and the default position set by the law is that unused statutory holiday expires at the end of the holiday year. This means that an employee is not entitled to carry statutory holiday over, or to be paid in lieu of unused statutory holiday, although there are exceptions. In practice, employers sometimes agree that staff may carry over unused holiday into subsequent holiday years. In general, though, the only time that employees should be paid for their annual leave is on the termination of their employment. So, as is clear, the law on holiday entitlements is quite complex. Employers in any doubt should seek advice – as employees will if they feel the need.
All change on pensions While holiday entitlements are an issue for the here and now, so too is the matter of pension planning. However, few see it as such, as retirement seems so far away and the expense of day-today living is more of a pressing issue, especially within the typically low paid world of retail. But save we must, as the government knows well, which is why it has been changing the pensions landscape recently. The first change to note is the introduction of pensions autoenrolment which came in for the largest employers in 2012 and which will finish for the smallest by February 2018. Eligible staff aged between 22 and State Pension Age earning the equivalent of £10,000 a year or more need to be automatically enrolled into a pension scheme (but can also opt out) with the employer making contributions too. Failure to participate can lead to stiff penalties for employers from the Pensions Regulator. Auto-enrolment features several on-going requirements. These include enrolling staff as they become eligible; paying sufficient contributions; certifying at least every 18 months that the employer has met their auto-enrolment responsibilities; and re-enrolling all staff every three years (with an opt out). Another change to note is the introduction of pensions freedom, which, from April 2015, gives savers the right to turn accrued pension savings into a guaranteed income for life (an annuity). Alternatively they can remain invested, drawing down from the pension when needed (income drawdown), take the whole pension as cash, or a combination of these options. Each option needs careful thought and, surprisingly, none have killed off the annuity. It’s also worth mentioning the New State Pension, which pays around £8,000 per year. The old Basic State Pension paid around £6,000 every year depending on how much National Insurance had been paid. PRODUCT OF THE MONTH
BPI NEWS PRODUCT OF THE MONTH: NIKON D500 Announced at the start of the year, the D500 arrived late spring, giving us a chance to have a play and form an impression in time for the summer. The promise is that this DSLR – currently topping its maker’s APS-C sensor ‘DX‘ format camera range – offers a performance akin to that of its considerably more expensive D5 big brother, packed into a more portable, lighter body…
A
t an SRP of £1,729.99 body only, or £2,479.99 with 16-80mm f/2.8-4 ED VR kit lens, the Nikon D500 arrives with the promise of being the D5 in different clothing; albeit one without the latter’s distinct advantage of a full frame chip. It is, rather, its manufacturer’s flagship APS-C model. Not everyone needs that larger sensor of course, and this DX-format Nikon goes some way living up to its D5 ‘lite’ pitch courtesy of the D500 featuring the same 153-point AF system (with 99 cross-type sensors) as its bigger brother, plus ability to shoot at a relatively high-speed 10fps for up to 200 images, whether JPEG or Raw. For low light work we also get the benefit of an ISO range expandable up from a core range of ISO100-51200 to a huge ISO1640000 equivalent, pushing the D500 into best-in-class territory. Whilst that’s impressive enough for stills shooters, those looking to capture video alongside on the Nikon system will be drawn to the fact that

the D500 brings 4K UHD recording to its manufacturer’s line up for the first time, and at up to 30fps too, with a 3.2-inch, 2,359K dot resolution screen provided at the back for shot composition and review. There’s a new image-processing engine in the
“Those looking to shoot video alongside on the Nikon system may well be drawn to the fact that the D500 brings 4K recording to the range for the first time, with a 3.2-inch, 2,539K dot resolution tilting screen provided at the back for shot composition and review.” Expeed 5 to cope with the increased demand this would otherwise place on the camera. It’s also the first camera out of the blocks to feature
Nikon’s always-on, instant sharing, Bluetooth-compatible SnapBridge software.
Robust feel, solid performance Even with the compact 50mm f/1.4 lens we were sent (on request) with the D500 body attached, the camera feels reassuringly robust, a large deep handgrip ensuring it won’t feel front heavy if used handheld with a telephoto lens otherwise attached. As well as the pull out and tilt LCD screen lending itself to video work, a large and bright optical viewfinder makes this camera a boon for shooting stills too, the AF response (in combination with our supplied lens) being so swift and near silent that we were prompted to check our images afterwards to ensure focusing had actually occurred. In most respects the D500’s control layout suggests a professional camera rather than a consumer one. We get a top plate LCD window that displays key settings as well as the larger backplate LCD, flanked on either side by rows of buttons, with a nicely chunky mode wheel sitting on the opposite corner of the top plate. Command dials at the front and back of the grip also make for easier navigation of settings and functions,
as does the familiar four-way control pad. In short, everything is present and correct and in its right place. Hey, if it ain’t broke then why would Nikon fix it? So, who should you be pitching the 20.9 effective megapixel D500 to? Given the high-ish price tag, we imagine die-hard Nikon enthusiasts in the main, or pros wanting a second body as a back up perhaps. Street prices looked to be holding firm around £1729, body only, at the time of writing. Should you require extra ammunition when pitching either this or the D5 itself to your customers, both cameras recently picked up a Red Dot Design Award for 2016 – the world class award presented to products released over the past two years that exhibit superiority in nine aspects, including innovation, functionality, ergonomics and durability – as well as two TIPA Awards from the European tech press, as we reported in May’s BPI News. www.nikon.co.uk
