Say hello to Wex Photo Video HAVING REPORTED EARLIER this year that Wex Photographic was bought by investor Aurelius, which had already acquired Calumet the previous year, news reaches us that Wex Photographic and Calumet have become simply Wex Photo Video, an announcement that was made mid October. A new flagship store is due to open in Whitechapel, London (at
37-39 Commercial Road, E1 1LF), this month (November) and covers 7,000 square feet, making it the largest of its kind in the UK, with Calumet’s smaller London store on Wardour Street reportedly closing before Christmas, and the team from Calumet’s soon-to-close Drummond Street shop said to be shortly moving to the new location. Wex’s Norwich showroom has
already been re-branded with the new name, whilst other Calumet outlets will reportedly be gradually re-branded over the next year. Wex CEO David Garratt adds: “This investment in range and shops illustrates our on-going promise to help the country’s photographers and videographers fulfil their creative goals.” The company says that, altogether, this represents
the biggest single investment in expanding Britain’s photo retail capacity in years. www.wexphotovideo.com

SONY PUTS US FULLY IN THE FRAME THE ELECTRONICS BEHEMOTH has announced the third generation of its popular full frame mirror-less camera in the A7R Mark III, plus a new full frame lens to go with it – and a further one to follow in summer 2018. The latest compact bodied camera features a whopping 42.2 megapixel resolution from a backilluminated 35mm full frame CMOS image sensor, 10fps continuous shooting and, ensuring both swiftness and accuracy, 399 phase detection AF points covering 68% of the image area, plus 425 contrast AF points. Other key features include 5-axis optical in-body image stabilisation, providing, it claims, a 5.5 step shutter speed advantage, plus 4K video capture, dual SD
card slots, extended battery life, and a core ISO range of 100-32000 expandable to ISO50-102400. Sony says that it has been ‘completely redesigned for professionals’ and that sales are due to start this November at an SRP of £3,200.
The first of the new E-mount lenses meanwhile is the compact designed FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Standard Zoom, which it describes as versatile and featuring a swift, precise and quiet autofocus performance. Again available this month, SRP is around £1,200. We’ll have to wait a bit longer for the other new lens, currently under development. Promised for summer 2018, the FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Super Telephoto lens will, it is claimed, deliver the high resolution and ‘beautiful bokeh’ effects of its flagship G Master series lenses. The optic is being aimed at pro sports, wildlife and news photographers, with additional specifications
promised ‘at a later date’. www.sony.co.uk

Sigma’s new mirror-less marvel THE THIRD PARTY LENS manufacturer has a new optic with which to entice the trade and its mirror-less camera-owning customers, in the large diameter wide-angle Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN. This prime lens falls under the manufacturer’s ‘Contemporary’ series banner, though it says that image quality rivals that of its ‘Art’ series lenses. Compact and lightweight, it’s been developed for everyday use. Available in Micro Four Thirds and Sony E-mount fits, Sigma says this is the world’s first interchangeable lens for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras to offer a 24mm focal length (35mm equivalent) and f/1.4 brightness. When utilised with Micro Four Thirds cameras it offers a 32mm equivalent focal length. Its maker adds that the optical design and stepping motor deliver smooth autofocus during video shooting, while the mount features a special sealing for a dust and splash-proof design. Three of a kind: Several iterations of the G series showcased, with the latest G1 X Mark III in centre. L to R: Canon UK Product Managers Neale Conroy and Didi Goddard, plus Product Marketing Manager Daniel Benjamin
CANON ‘G’ FORCE TO POWER YOUR AUTUMN SALES
Not content with a new EOS 6D Mark II, EOS M100, four new ‘L’ series lenses, a macro twin flash unit, a raft of PIXMA printers and copious cashback and lens reward deals to drive footfall to its retail partners in the past couple of months, Canon has done it again with the latest release: the PowerShot G1 X Mark III. BPI News attends the launch, in a London magic club, to discover how it will cast a spell on dealers and customers alike…
“

his is a big deal…” So says Canon Product Expert David Parry, talking about its latest, conventional tech wisdom-defying, release – which squeezes an APS-C sized sensor into a compact camera body with a 3x optical zoom lens. The manufacturer has certainly been providing us with plenty to write about – and for its retail partners to discover – these past couple of months. In our September edition we ran a spread on its new autumn products (see this article’s standfirst for reminder), and followed up in October with a detailed outline on its current cashback and lens reward schemes, all designed to further incentivise sales. On top of all this – as David Parry says – this November sees the appearance of a new heavyweight among premium cameras aimed at enthusiasts and professionals
looking for a second, more compact fixed lens back up to their DSLR kit. Enter the PowerShot G1 X Mark III, an update of the 2012 PowerShot G1 X, which originally had a 1.5-inch sensor.

aperture for “really nice background blur”. As with predecessors, the camera’s intended market is DSLRusers who want a more compact solution, yet with a similar look and feel. “All the feedback we had from the G series was that people want the same kind of control and experience they get from their SLRs
and I feel we’ve really answered that with this camera. We know that most people who use this series are DSLR users, so we wanted them to be able to pick this up and start using it straight away. The shutter release for example is more like a DSLR than any compact we’ve ever had.”
As indicated at the outset of this piece, the new 24.2 megapixel camera includes the breakthrough of a larger APS-C sized sensor in a smaller chassis – its sensor technology claimed to be almost exactly the same as the EOS 80D – married to a zoom the equivalent of 24-72mm in 35mm film camera terms, that’s optimized for the sensor. “This is the first compact from us to have an APS-C sized sensor,” says David. What’s more the latest camera sports an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/5.6, plus a built-in mechanical ND filter and 9-blade

CANON POWERSHOT G1 X MARK III PROMOTION
Your customers get rewards, you’re rewarded with custom ‘And now for our next trick…’ Canon has steadily evolved its G PowerShot series to now include a large APS-C sensor and fully articulated touch screen that can be rotated through the full 360°, as on its G1 X Mark III, in middle

“This is the first compact from us to have an APS-C sized sensor. We have added features that you’d normally find on a DSLR. These include the fastest dual pixel AF you’ve ever seen from us.” –Canon Product Expert David Parry the AF locked on the first frame. “Even just looking at it, it resembles an EOS. It’s very similar to our G5 X, although this is slightly larger because of its larger sensor.” Also arriving in this model is a DIGIC 7 processor – “to have this in a camera of this size is incredible” – centrally positioned 2.36 million dot electronic viewfinder and improved IS performance, says Canon. The built in image stabilisation system is said to be the equivalent of 4 stops. Factor in a fully articulated (through 360°) LCD with reinforced glass cover that at 3-inches in size hosts a resolution of 1.04 million dots and is also a touch screen, dust and drip resistant exterior (a similar amount of weather protection as the EOS 80D) and Wi-Fi (which can be used to control the camera’s AF in conjunction with an app), NFC and Bluetooth connectivity… and
on a DSLR,” says Canon’s David, underlining that the G1X Mark III ‘comes from EOS DNA’. These include “the fastest dual pixel AF you’ve ever seen from us,” as well as customisable controls, low noise and great dynamic range. However some features have been simplified/ refined from previous generations (unsurprising,
as the G series started way back in 2000) – including the fact that there is one lens control ring this time around rather than (a potentially confusing) two, and its operation’s continuous and silent – so no distracting clicks, in use. We also get Full HD movies this time around rather than 4K, Canon stating that it wanted to perfect its auto focus systems before it would include 4K. “If your images are not sharp, you’re wasting your time,” Canon’s David reasoned. Time lapse movies are, however, included. With November availability promised, suggested retail price for the G1 X Mark III is £1149. Accessories include a waterproof case in the WP-DC56 (see below) that doesn’t restrict or lose access to any of the camera’s controls, whilst being usable to depths of 40 metres. As retailers may already be aware, Canon has launched a new loyalty program, Print Rewards, enabling its users of PIXMA model printers to earn points every time they print. The first such printing incentive scheme from Canon, it’s been set up to coincide with the introduction of the manufacturer’s new TS6150, TS8150, TS9150, TR9550 and TR7550 models. These points – which accumulate over time on an online portal – can then be exchanged for tangible rewards. produced, whilst the 130 millionth interchangeable lens was the EF 1635mm f/2.8L III USM. As those in the trade with longer memories will be aware, the Canon EOS system debuted alongside EF series lenses in March 1987, at the time supplying the world’s first fully electronic mount system for film AF SLR cameras. Initial SLRs included the EOS 650 in 1987 and EOS-1 in 1989. Production predictably accelerated in the early 2000’s as digital cameras went mass market. enro’s products have always been competitively priced whilst allowing its trade partners to make a healthy margin – a double whammy that delivers for both consumers and retailers – and the same is true of the ‘hero’ products flagged up in two new autumn brochures from the distributor. “These act as a supplement to our main catalogue and include all the exciting new products that have arrived in the past couple of months, as well as everything that’s coming up,” enthuses Kenro MD Paul Kench.

Frames worth looking into…
This time of year naturally has huge gifting potential, and Kenro’s album and frames catalogue is the place to browse for stock. In terms of ‘hero’ products to go for, Paul recommends its fittingly named Candy (above) range of fun, brightly coloured photo albums, which come in either spotted or striped covers and can hold up to 200 6x4 inch or 7x5 inch photos, depending on which of the two sizes you go for. Suggested pricing starts at £15.96. On the brochure’s preceding page you’ll also find the Old World Map Series Journal (below), which features vintage cover art plus 80 ruled pages for keeping a travel diary or scrapbooking. It’s available in trade packs of 12 or as singles, at just £8.34 SRP. “This is something new for us that we haven’t done before,” adds Paul. “It’s a nice addition to the original Old World Map album series.”
In terms of frames to sell, Kenro offers up the Sienna series (bottom centre, left), which is new for 2017/18 and comes in a contemporary shade of royal blue or smoke grey (supplied to the trade shrink wrapped in individual bubble bags), along with its swish Horizon frames (bottom centre, right). The latter are stylish wood frames to suit any modern décor, available to accommodate the four popular print sizes: 6x4, 7x5, 8x6 and 8x10 inches. They have a distinctive deep (45mm) profile that allows them to be free standing without an easel back, while, alternatively, fixtures for wall fittings are also provided. SRPs start from £14.94. “These are high quality rubber wood frames, and the fact that

they’re free standing provides a point of difference,” Kenro’s MD continues. “The Sienna 8x18 inch and 10x20 inch triple aperture frames are also great for displaying panoramic images, if you remove the triple aperture mat.” With prices starting at just £8.34 SRP, Sienna range single aperture frame options are available for 6x4, 7x5, 8x6 and 8x10-inch photos, whilst the triple aperture versions house three 6x4 or three 7x5 inch prints.

SRP is £239.94. “It’s a very clever bit of kit that, when mounted on a tripod, provides access to double its length on the ground,” explains Paul. “If it’s on a flat surface then you get maximum load capability, whereas if it’s on a tripod it offers maximum length and very seamless movement”.
Hardware that goes the distance The second brochure from Kenro this autumn focuses on hardware. Sigma helps retailers ‘zoom’ ahead this Christmas
Third party photo accessory manufacturer Sigma has a long-term best seller for photo specialists to stock in the run up to Christmas in its compact 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM zoom lens. BPI News learns more about this key optic in the range…
W
ant to find an easy seller with a competitive profit margin that’s worth looking into? Already a best seller, Sigma is asking specialist photo retailers to focus on its compact 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM zoom lens this autumn – available as it is in standard Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax fits, plus, like all its lenses, manufactured and rigorously tested in Japan using Sigma’s own ‘A1’ MFT measuring system.
Close up or wide, Sigma’s 10-20mm lens shines. Sample images taken in Kerala, India, by Roger Reynolds
“We all know about the Japanese attention to detail and craftsmanship. And never has that been more acutely focused than in the case of our compact 10-20mm. There’s nothing this lens has to prove: it’s already a best seller of long-standing. So if you’re looking for an easy sale in the run up to the festive period, this one is a little cracker!” –Sigma UK General Manager Graham Armitage “We all know about the Japanese attention to detail and craftsmanship,” says Sigma UK General Manager Graham Armitage. “And never has that been more acutely focused – if you’ll forgive the pun – than in the case of our compact 10-20mm. There’s nothing this lens has to prove: it’s already a best seller of long-standing. So if you’re looking for an easy sale in the run up to the festive period, this one is a little cracker!” With an SRP of £449.99, the premium build ultra wide-angle lens is specifically designed for APS-C sensor incorporating DSLRs and has a maximum aperture of f/3.5 throughout the entire zoom range, ensuring, says Sigma, that the optic is capable in low light and when used for indoor photography. Another property of the lens is that it can produce striking images with exaggerated perspective that help your photographer customers
emphasize their subjects. No wonder it’s been garlanded with awards and positive comments by the photo press since launch. ‘Build quality is excellent and the results are impressive,’ says Digital SLR Photography magazine, while Digital Camera magazine said ‘there’s no shortage of quality materials in his lens.’
Built to last & to perform As we’ve discovered on many occasions from Sigma, the lens construction is second to none: with 13 elements in 10 groups, ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass, SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass and aspherical lenses provide excellent correction of all types of aberrations. A multi layered lens coating reduces flare and ghosting and, it suggests, delivers high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. As its model name suggests,
the 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM zoom lens incorporates a Hyper Sonic Motor to help deliver fast and quiet auto focus, whilst allowing full time manual focus override. A petal-type hood is included for blocking out extraneous light when needed. Minimum focusing distance is 24cm at all focal lengths; with such a close focus distance giving rise to the exaggerated perspective, mentioned earlier, that emphasizes perspective. The large, constant aperture of f/3.5 provides a bright image in the viewfinder, which helps photographers easily check focusing and composition – particularly in lower light this autumn and the run up to Christmas. Contact your local Sigma rep now about getting in stock of the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM zoom lens in good time to ensure you have a best seller on your hands during the busiest sales season of the year. www.sigma-imaging-uk.com

GROUP THERAPY: BOOK NOW TO DEMO & BUY EPSON PRINTERS
3 YEAR
Kent based Epson re-seller the DPS Group suggests the Epson D700 as a profit-generating printer for retailers and mini labs in the run up to Christmas. Whilst the clock is ticking on the current extended three-year warranty deal on purchases of Epson’s P6000 (pictured) to P9000, which ends December 31st
A
s the more clued-up members of the photo trade will be aware, there is currently an extended three-year warranty deal being offered on Epson P-series printers until the end of this year. Last issue we flagged up the advantages offered by the 44-inch Epson SureColor SC-P8000 for anyone looking to add a new revenue stream to their business, but the offer also includes the rest of the range, from the P6000 to P9000. So, if you’ve been in the market for a large format printer for a while, which can deliver a wide variety of photo and fine art quality prints and proofs on a plethora of different media, then there’s never been a better time to make that purchase. And, when you’re ready to talk, naturally
the Kent based DPS Group are the people you should be speaking to. “Speak to us to discover more about how Epson’s SureColor ‘P’ series printers can become the perfect partner for your print or photo business,” encourages DPS Group MD Maneesh Patel. “Or better still let’s chat about you dropping by in person and receiving a demo before you buy. The extended three year warranty is only available for a short time though, so you’ll want to make sure to book that appointment or place an order as soon as possible, as the clock is ticking!” For more on its high-end printers, interested parties will want to take a look at Epson’s site dedicated to photographers, which can be found at www.epson.co.uk/forthemoment and which showcases many of the additional printers that the DPS Group can provide to the photo trade, including the P6000, P7000 and P9000 models.
The compact alternative
D-lightful: Epson’s D700 is perfect as a desktop or kiosk based solution - and you can simply add more machines to your set up as and when needed!
Large and wider format print solutions aside, one of the flagship models for both the DPS Group and Epson itself remains the compact, desktop or kiosk based D700, which is a six colour solution. As we’ve mentioned on prior occasions, you name it, this machine can print it – including photos, cards, invitations, flyers, promotional

For the latter you can choose from 102 to 210 mm wide and 89 to 1000mm in length. Another enticing point here is the printer’s compact size. Because of this it can fit into a photo kiosk and is durable too, in that most of its component parts are permanent. As one would expect from Epson, the D700 offers a print quality and colour consistency that is inline with the brand’s professional graphics printers. Needless to say, the printer boasts a wide colour gamut and the ability to deliver sharp looking prints, thanks, in part, to its Micro Piezo print head. Its professional UltraChrome D6-S ink – also available via the DPS Group – has been formulated for premium glossy photo prints, produced at high production speeds ideal for busy mini labs. Boasting a low cost per print, it has a high resolution of 720dpi x 1440 dpi and is, moreover, reliable and low maintenance.

Larmor: a sound system for your LCD The run up to Christmas is the ideal time to be pitching photo accessories at your customers. A case in point is these 5th generation LCD screens and sunshade hoods from Larmor available to the trade via distributor Just Ltd, which promise dealer margins of 40%. BPI News discovers more…
I
t’s been a while since we last featured Just Ltd in BPI News – yet each time the distributor manages to surprise us with an inventive new line of photographic accessories. The ones to focus on this time are a bunch of new LCD glass protectors and sunshades from Larmor branded as part of its ‘5th’ generation series, that could make for steady sellers for the canny photo retailer. Presented in attractively slick and elegant combo packaging that also includes the hood which we’ll examine in a moment, the LCD protectors’ five layer construction comprises a nano anti fingerprint layer, 0.3mm optical glass, a metal border, an anti shatter layer and an adhesive layer. The metal border ensures no damage to the edges of the camera’s screen, whilst the selfadhesive layer makes for an easy application. The optical glass is also anti scratch and anti shatter. In
combination it’s also thin; its maker suggests that the usability of any touch screen model it is applied to isn’t compromised, while Larmor’s product is anti glare, smudge resistant and doesn’t leave any residue when it’s removed. “The protector is easy to fit and remove, leaving no glue residue behind,” Peter Brodgen, MD of UK distributor Just Ltd confirms to us. “Simply place the protector in the correct position over your camera’s LCD and press down in the centre of the protector with your finger; easy!” It should be noted that the glass protector can only be installed and removed once.
True colours… and a great deal The included sunshade hood (below) meanwhile features a magnetic and non-slip rubber surround to keep it in place. Since the glass protector also features a metal border,

Protection where it’s needed - from knocks and scratches to your customers’ LCD screens and also useful as a shade from the sun
this allows the magnetic sunshade to be clicked on and off your customer’s camera with ease. The metal border also prevents damage to the corners of the protector. “The idea is that with the hood affixed to the back of the camera, the outdoor photographer can not only see the image more clearly but also the true colours of the image,” MD Peter continues. “Once in place, just flip up the sunshade and its pop up mechanism will keep the sides open when in use.” Unsurprisingly there are different options for screen protectors and sunshade hood to choose from that directly match the camera screen configurations of a host of popular DSLRs and CSCs from the key brands. Over 30 camera models are covered, including Canon (1D X Mark II, 5D Mark III, 5Ds, 5Dr, 5D Mark IV),
Nikon (D4, D4s, D5, D810, D800, D6100, D610, D750, D500, D7100, D7200, Df) Fujifilm (X-T1, X-T2, X-A3) and Sony (A7, A7R Mark II, A7S Mark II, A9, RX100, RX1, RX10). Suggested retail prices range from £24.95 to £32.95, including VAT, with Just Ltd’s MD Peter Brodgen suggesting that dealer margins can be as high as 40% on the products. KINGDOM COME: PHOTOXPORT & SWEEP THE UK
More and more customers are calling on the print services of Noritsu and exclusive UK distributor PhotoXport – the proof being that it now has a network of printers installed the length and breadth of the British Isles. So isn’t it time you gave PhotoXport MD Derek Fieldhouse and his team a call?
A clean sweep: PhotoXport has undertaken installations of Noritsu dry and wet labs the breadth of the UK this year. Clockwise, L to R: Ben Mullay of the Shetland-based The Camera Centre; Malcolm McDonald of Sutherland’s Photo Lab, Thurso, Scotland; Jane Stapleton School Photography in Derbyshire; and Dave Rasch of Phoenix Photographic in Essex, examining the output from his Green II dry lab
W
herever you’re based in the UK, if you’re looking to replace an existing print lab or add a new revenue stream to your business – like the case studies here – Noritsu has got to be top of your list. For dry labs we’re talking the Noritsu Green range, starting with the Noritsu Green Simplex, moving on to the QSS Green standard and peaking with the top-of-the-range QSS Green II dry lab. If however, you’re looking to ride the wave of the silver halide resurgence, like many, then the heavy-duty 3704G is the one to go for. The latter has enjoyed sales figures seven times higher this year than the previous one, according to PhotoXport’s very busy MD Derek Fieldhouse. “We’ve covered the UK,” he enthuses. “We’ve installed a machine in Cornwall, and we’ve put a machine up near John O’Groats.” To give an indication of PhotoXport’s countrywide reach, Robert Carne of Premier Photographics in Truro in Cornwall recently swapped out two Noritsu wet labs for a Green dry lab, whilst Malcolm McDonald of Sutherland’s Photo Lab, based in Thurso, Scotland is another satisfied Green II convert. “We wanted to have something
as close to our old Noritsu QSS3212 wet lab as we could, which turned out to be an ex-demo Green II,” says Malcolm. “I watched the videos about it and saw that it was getting great reviews – which prompted me to go for it. And the print quality is fantastic!” From initial discovery to having a machine installed took just three weeks, relates Malcolm. Speed of output – and the ability to produce photo books – was another consideration in choosing this machine, as Sutherland’s Photo Lab needed a heavy-duty beast to fulfill its high volume of print orders, extending across most of the Highlands. Fellow retailer and minilab Phoenix Photographic, is another recipient of a Noritsu Green II dry lab. The business’ Dave Rasch was already satisfied with his Green II – so much so that he added a second Noritsu dry lab. “It was a very easy choice to be honest with you, and we’re so pleased,” he confirms. “We can do various sizes nice and quick and we can also do double sided for photobooks, cards and invitations.
For their part, PhotoXport are a very fair and flexible company to deal with – they listen to what the customer wants, which is rare these days.” And just last month we heard that a QSS Green II dry lab had been installed in The Camera Centre, based in the Shetland Isles. Manager Ben Mullay told us: “The Green II just suits the nature of our business and the volume of stuff we’re doing, as well as offering the ability to do cards and photobooks and added value items. It’s more of a ‘photo machine’; it’s a special bit of kit and that is confirmed by the picture quality, which is much more photo-realistic than our previous lab. It even renders pictures from mobile phones really well and does as good a job as it can with them. The output has been very well received by customers.” Dry labs aside, a Noritsu 3704G with Quad magazine System has been recently placed with Jane Stapleton School Photography in Derbyshire. The business’ MD Steven Deverill told BPI News: “We’ve been running Noritsu labs
for 12 years and they’ve always been very stable. Although it was an obvious choice for us considering our volumes, we took an overview of all the systems available. The 3704G ticked all the boxes and after a smooth installation we are looking forward to many more years with trouble free Noritsu equipment.”
Want to talk business? Talk to Derek PhotoXport MD Derek Fieldhouse concludes: “Please do browse the website for more details of the minilab solutions on offer – if you can’t find something or need assistance, feel free to contact us like the retailers here did and we’ll be glad to help.” As to the cost of installing a Noritsu dry lab or wet lab into your business, PhotoXport is, to quote Derek, ‘always doing deals’. TRADE SHOW NEWS 1

A BIGGER SPLASH! After a successful, newly expanded event at Liverpool’s Exhibition Centre, cheek-by-jowl with the famous Albert Dock in 2016, this October 7th and 8th the Wilkinson Cameras team returned for a second year. BPI News braved disrupted trains and rain-lashed ferry crossing to report on the biggest photography and optics show in the north…
L
ast year we reported on how Wilkinson Cameras’ Digital Splash has outgrown its modest trade fair roots to become a two-day event in a swish and airy modern venue – the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool – thereby making it the biggest photo show in the North West of England. Once again last month we were in attendance, speaking to the distributors, retailers and manufacturers who had responded positively and enthusiastically to the offer to exhibit – and also caught up with Wilkinson’s MD, David Parkinson, to get his impressions of, and feedback from, 2017’s event – the eighth such annual show. The big camera brands – Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sigma and Hasselblad – were all in attendance, many with bigger and brighter stands this time. A total of 42 manufacturers exhibited, representing over 70 photo brands. As on previous occasions, exhibitors we spoke with were visibly happy with the level of interest from attendees and the quality of visitors, noting that people had obviously come to spend. Digital Splash’s own analysis reveals some had travelled from as far as Scotland and the south coast to attend.
“As far as the trade is concerned the feedback has generally been very good indeed,” reveals Wilkinson’s MD David Parkinson. “Everybody has been very complimentary about how well organised it was. The quality of the visitors was very good. Visitor numbers and takings on the Saturday were on par with last year, and, though train disruptions on the Sunday meant we were slightly down on numbers, our actual turnover wasn’t that much affected – meaning people had come to the show to actively spend.” In fact, Wilkinson Cameras says its turnover was up 16% overall compared with last year. Data also reveals that almost half the visitors were in the 45-54 and 55-64 age groups as one might expect, though a significant proportion (21%) were under the age of 18. Some 64% declared themselves enthusiast photographers, 12% pros and 22% beginners. “Feedback from attendees is that they thoroughly enjoyed the event, and the photo walks and talks all helped to drive sales. We had new young blood like Thomas Heaton and Alyn Wallace, who went down extremely well. Matt Hart did a very good job with the Fujifilm walks and we had excellent feedback from
3
the Hasselblad photo walks. People seem to have enjoyed it immensely and the trade has been telling us likewise.”
Smooth running To avoid a snaking queue for the main retail counter, this year it was refined into lanes, whilst sales were now spread more evenly throughout the show due to many suppliers selling Wilkinson’s stock direct from their stand. “That helped immensely. It worked for the guys selling direct because then they could just seal the deal there and then, and from our point of view, when you consider there’s lots of accessories sold at the show it reduces the till queues down considerably”, says David. “We also had twice as many tills as last year and more staff, so the operational side of things had much improved and made for smoother running. The process of spending money has to be as quick and as painless as possible. “The whole ticketing system had also been overhauled to make it a lot
easier and we used mobile phones as scanners to scan people into the talks and walks. We’ve learnt a lot since year one and can take a pat on the back for ensuring the whole event ran much smoother. As far as the trade goes we’d just like to thank everybody for supporting Digital Splash; particularly this year, as you could tell exhibitors had put a lot more effort into the stands, which looked smarter and more user friendly. Sony had gone to town with their activities, including break dancing and the biking, while Fujifilm did phenomenally well in expanding their mini seminar sessions. Feedback from customers has been very positive indeed. Exhibitors are still getting sales now off the back of the show and I’m sure we’ll still feel the benefit come Christmas.” For further info on the Wilkinson Cameras Digital Splash exhibition, what’s typically on offer & forthcoming details of 2018’s show when announced, direct your browser at digitalsplash.tv or email sales@wilkinson.co.uk

FUJIFILM’S NEW ‘HOME FOR PHOTO’ UNVEILED
There’s a new website for Fujifilm photo printing designed to drive people to print more and do so with its Fujifilm independent photo retail network members. Marketing Manager Peter Wigington talks us through the benefits and outlines a couple of supportive seasonal promotions…
I
n recent months we’ve heard from a wide variety of photo retailers sharing the benefits of being part of Fujifilm’s independent photo retail network with us. This month we’re hearing direct from the manufacturer. Fujifilm’s Marketing Manager Peter Wigington has been in touch to enthuse about a new consumer website for its photo printing services at www.fujifilmphotoservices.co.uk. The idea behind the new website bearing the message ‘For the memories that matter’, is that it talks consumers through the steps they need to make to get their photos printed in a simple and straightforward fashion using all the platforms available through the Fujifilm Imagine software to create and print beautiful photos and gifts: in store using a Fujifilm kiosk, through your PC using the online kiosk or through your Smartphone or tablet using the Imagine Mobile app. Naturally the website also has an interactive store locator to direct
customers to their nearest Fujifilm independent photo retail network member. “This is an important move for us,” confirms Peter. “Although it’s aimed at supporting our independent photo retail network group via the store locator, our wider ambition is to talk increasingly directly to consumers about photo print services – and then, once we’ve inspired them, direct them to where they can get those services undertaken. Our ambition was to create a Fujifilm ‘home of photo’. We’re telling consumers what options are available, regarding what they can do when printing their images, plus giving them the opportunity to download the Fujifilm Imagine app so they can enjoy the convenience of using their local store’s online ordering option.”
Three platform print sales approach Peter continues: “The new website
“The www.fujifilmphotoservices.co.uk site is in response to the feedback that we’ve had from our independent photo retailers, which is to create a ‘home’ for photo to promote more downloads of the Fujifilm Imagine mobile app and engage directly with consumers about photo printing generally.” – Fujifilm Marketing Manager Peter Wigington
Fujifilm’s new website is aimed at encouraging consumers to print more, simplifying the ‘path to print’ and directing them to their nearest Fujifilm independent photo retail network or mini lab when they wish to do so. It’s just part of a three platform approach from the manufacturer

FUJIFILM INDEPENDENT PHOTO RETAIL NETWORK PROMOTION
“Although print volumes may be declining for traditional 6x4-inches, that doesn’t mean to say that your average transaction values need to follow suit. In fact, revenue streams can be increasing because you’re talking to customers about additional ways of using their images –which in fact are more profitable for the retailer.” also promotes the three platforms that we offer through our Fujifilm Imagine software – that of online, in-store and mobile. We talk about the many different ways that photos can be used from traditional prints through photobooks, canvases and photo gifts. We have a regular blog and Fujifilm Photo Print Services are active on all the main social media sites. Using digital marketing tools we then get much more data and insights than traditional marketing methods, allowing us to monitor and optimise our marketing efforts to greater effect.” Moving forward, Peter says that the focus of the site is going to be more about lifestyle and how we use photos in everyday life. “This is very much reflected in the tone of voice we adopt in our blogs, where we talk about the personal experience using photos in your everyday life.” “The overall message is that the Fujifilm Photo Print Services website is a response to the feedback that we’ve had from our independent stores and committed ourselves to providing when we met them at Conference earlier this year. We encourage consumers to subscribe to our newsletter so that we can keep them up to date with new ideas for being creative with their photos, which in turn drives more business to our retail partners. “We understand that the market is challenging, so what we spend our time doing with these stores through regular newsletters and store visits from our retail business development advisor Wendy Gray, is show that although print volumes may be declining for traditional 6x4-inches, that doesn’t mean to

Seasonal promos: Supporting independents, invigorating the trade As regards giving its retail partners a fighting chance, once again this year there are Christmas promotional opportunities for Fujifilm’s independents. One arrives off the back of the manufacturer’s close working relationship with Photowonder, which will provide the Fujifilm independent photo retail network with free Photowonder services for the run up to Christmas. The free Photowonder services will be linked to the purchase of Photo Panels on a special 7+1 offer from Swains. “It’s collaboration between Swains, Photowonder and us,” Peter Wigington confirms. “We are calling it ‘Photo Panel Art’. Our photo retailers can take advantage of a great deal on photo panels – perfect for a Christmas gift. When they buy in to the Swains offer they also get free Photowonder services courtesy of Fujifilm for six weeks. It’s a great way to promote a service that provides a creative way to use photos.”

Fujifilm is also promoting the idea of the memory box, to replace the traditional shoebox of prints. “We’ve seen similar promotions online so thought we’d bring it in-store too,” Peter explains. “It’s just a small box but will hold up to 700 6x4-inches. We are suggesting that the retailer offers the box with 200 prints for £39.99. The prints initially come in the form of 8 vouchers each worth 25 6x4 prints. That way the box can be given as a gift and the prints redeemed when they are needed rather than all at once, which in turn encourages repeat visits and more custom to the store.” Once again, your contact for more on the clever ideas above is Peter Wigington. talking to your customers and getting them on side and not just relying on 6x4-inch prints – and the website is having that conversation as well.” With early feedback looking positive, Fujifilm will be measuring and tweaking its approach as it goes. “Having a good well
optimised website means we can react far more quickly to responses to our content and make the site more effective at achieving our prime objective – to get more people printing photos more often and to do so through our network of Fujifilm retail partners.” www.fujifilmphotoservices.co.uk

DNP DEBUTS PHOTO-CARD PRINTER Another clever idea to open up a new revenue stream ‘on the cards’ from the Japanese print specialist…
Ansmann expands operation, lights the way POWER SPECIALIST ANSMANN UK says it is boldly bucking continued uncertainty over Brexit by adding a sixth warehouse to the five it already owns, informing us that its purchase of Unit 13 means a 33% increase in warehouse space. This has obvious advantages for its customers in that it says they will be guaranteed the stock they need when they need it – and that pricing will be stable, due to increased ordering from the Ansmann logistics centre in China. As well as fast deliveries, the company is promising the photo trade great customer service and high quality reliable products with market leading warranties. A case in point is its new ‘hero’ torch in the M200F, which is not only ideal for photographers but holds universal appeal,
especially with the nights drawing in. Compatible with regular AA batteries, it offers high brightness (240 lumens at 100%) and a zoom function, enabling the beam of light to be adjusted from focusing on a precise point to floodlighting an area. Packaged in an attractive blister pack, SRP is £29.95 and it comes with a three-year manufacturer’s guarantee. SPIRIT OF ‘72 PREMIUM CAMERA BAG manufacturer Billingham has unveiled its latest characterful creation in the ‘72’, which it suggests should be pitched at photographers with fixed prime lens and small system cameras. Made in England at the Billingham factory and available in five colour combinations, SRP is £100. The bag itself, with shoulder sling attached, weighs a manageable 0.46 Kg. With an outer body constructed of either Billingham canvas or FibreNyte, it’s claimed the Billingham 72 offers a full defence against inclement weather. Both materials are hard wearing yet lightweight and are said to remain moisture and heat-resistant for their entire life. FibreNyte is an extra-rugged material that is colour fast, and delivers durability and protection against wear and tear. No wonder

then that the Billingham 72 confidently comes with a five-year manufacturer’s guarantee. “The idea for the Billingham 72 was conceived by our newly formed in-house design team, following extensive research into the market,” says Director Harry Billingham. “They identified a need for a secure but lightweight bag to protect smaller systems or fixed lens cameras, particularly those with heavier bodies, that also gives photographers immediate access to their equipment. It makes for a perfect addition to our range.” www.billingham.co.uk

ai Nippon Printing – or DNP for short – is diversifying in order to open up possible new markets for its partners in the photo trade. It has a new photo-card printer on the way, with availability promised before the end of the year. It tells BPI News that the new device – the Fargo DTC1250e USB – can be purchased in conjunction with its DP-SL620 all-in-one compact kiosk (see advert opposite). As with DNP’s other print solutions, the new photo-card printer utilises dye sublimation technology, offering direct transfer edge-to-edge printing – with the added capability to deliver dual sided prints. The compact printer also has the capacity to hold and print 100 cards at a time. Software provides the choice of printing regular full bleed photo cards, photo cards with framed edges and border effects – allowing for the possibility of the customer importing other frames – or themed photo cards; for example a gift voucher, invitation or actual business cards. Again, this latter option can be customised as desired by importing other themes and graphics. Print wise, as noted there is the opportunity for both single sided and double-sided photo cards, in either horizontal or vertical format.
Features of the Fargo - at a glance: n Dye submination technology offers direct transfer edge to edge printing n Can accommodate & print up to 100 credit card sized images at a time n Add custom designs and borders using supplied software n Print single or dual sided cards, as desired n Cards are supplied in packs of 500 to the trade
DNP further notes that, as this is a long lasting and resistant media, the souvenir market is another angle for retailers and mini labs. The credit card size also ensures that the prints are convenient for slipping into a wallet. The printer utilises a full colour replaceable ribbon, and in terms of the supply of media, packs of cards arrive in boxes of 500. As you’ll have realised from reading the above, with the Fargo, your photo business is sure to ‘go’ ‘far’… To place an order or find out more, get in touch now via sales@dnpphoto.eu www.dnpphoto.eu

ast issue we discovered how a combined continuous light and flash in the portable (and freshly announced) Rotolight Neo 2 is a sequel that actually delivers – as well as impressively expands on the original. Furthermore, described as ‘a revolution not an evolution’, the
second-generation unit is being pitched to photo retailers and their photographer customers as an oncamera (or off-camera) light that’s capable of being used for both stills and video. As a quick reminder, the Neo 2 is 85% brighter than the original, while featuring adjustable dimming.
A crucial new addition is a builtin Elinchrom Skyport 2.4Ghz HSS Wireless Flash Receiver; enabling it to control up to 10 lights in four groups at 200 metres. Don’t be worried about loss of power when using it on location either; it can deliver 85,000 full power flashes from 6xAA batteries. Rotolight recommends
using Powerex Pro batteries; specifically Rotolight Lionheart AA batteries, available in packs of six, which is the exact amount the Neo 2 requires (see side panel). In terms of SRP, the Neo 2 is available for purchase as a single light at an affordable £299 inc VAT. Alternatively there is a three light

Your Christmas wish list from Rotolight
Making light work Announced last month, the Neo 2 is already out there in the market being used by delighted photographers – including Rotolight’s Master of Light Terry Donnelly, a specialist in both architecture and portraiture. Happily the Neo 2 allows him to make ‘light work’ of both creative and commercial pursuits. “I’m bowled over by the quality of the lamps when using them without modifiers or anything,” Terry enthuses. “They’re so portable they go straight in my bag alongside my camera kit. I’ve been using three Rotolight lamps – the Anova Pro, the AEOS and the original Neo – but when I saw the Neo 2, I said that this is going to be a world beater; I’ve

Mayor of Liverpool and it was just so easy to take a camera, three lenses, and the Neo 2 in my bag slung over my shoulder. I’d previously packed a pair of lamps, softboxes and all this extra luggage… but it’s much, much easier now: a single hand-held Neo 2 does me fine.”
“When I saw the Rotolight Neo 2, I said that this is going to be a world beater; I’ve not seen anything which will touch it. Rotolight really have revolutionised it. I’ve shot with all the other lighting brands, but there’s nothing as portable as these Neo’s.” –Photographer Terry Donnelly not seen anything which will touch it. So I’m now shooting on the Neo 2 and they really have revolutionised it. I’ve shot with all the other lighting brands but there’s nothing as portable as these Neo’s.” Terry describes his style of photography as ‘varied’, with jobs ranging from shooting construction sites to premier league football. “The Neo 2 is my ‘go to’ lamp of late; I recently shot a PR job with the Metro Front & back coverage: From the front the Neo 2 is a powerful portable continuous light and flash combined, whilst at the back you can dial in custom settings to control output
Describing the Neo 2 as intuitive, Terry makes the point that if you’re using the light in continuous mode you can see the results before you squeeze the shutter. “Do you know what it allows you to do? Concentrate on how the image is going to look, instead of worrying about if the flash is going to fire or if it’s too harsh! To me, it’s very liberating to be able to take all of those concerns away. “If I need higher power output I’ll use it on flash, but I do prefer to use it in continuous mode. Although it’s a bright light, once it’s on, people tend to adjust very quickly to it. You get much more of a natural picture and no red eye either because the eyes adjust to the light. It will provide beautiful, ‘wrap-around’ soft light straight out of the lamp.”
A sequel that improves on the original… “Compared to the original Neo, the Neo 2 is not only brighter but now has the flash capability, meaning I’m confident to go to any situation with that Neo 2 and know it will deliver what I need it to deliver,” continues
Terry Donnelly. “For portability when you’re on the go, the Neo 2 just can’t be beaten, it really can’t. If you need even more light or a different kind of light, then the AEOS and the Anova Pro really provide some kick as well, if I’m working with a crew. We used it for lighting a World War II Spitfire in a hanger on a recent workshop. I needed a big spread of light, so we used three Anova Pros and an AEOS. It’s horses for courses really, but, if I can, the Neo 2 is the light I’ll go to first of all.” As a case in point, Terry recently took his Rotolight kit along to a shoot at Liverpool’s iconic Cairns brewery, an old Victorian building that’s currently undergoing development. “I wanted to go in and shoot the model using the background as much as possible to document it before it disappears; it was a personal shoot for me as much as anything,” he explains. “Rotolight did, however, come up to Liverpool to shoot some behind the scenes video footage. “We used a number of light combinations. There’s a picture of the girl in the wedding dress with her face made up that was lit with one Neo 2, just because we had to access the location via a ladder, so it was a bit awkward taking more kit up there. We also needed to move quickly and to be in and out of there as fast as possible. When we had more room, on the lower level, we did a set with three Neo 2’s. We had a separation light behind our model, to give us a bit of a rim light, we had a Neo 2 camera right plus a Neo 2 camera left, which was at half power. It lifted the shadow density and still gave us shape and form to the model’s face.” Terry makes that point that with photography experimentation is key – and the Neo 2 allows exactly that to happen. “I try different lighting set ups because it’s so easy to try

Is now the time for you to switch to dry? The reasons why businesses choose to replace their wet lab with Epson's Inkjet range speak for themselves. With wet labs approaching the end of their life, and spare parts becoming more scarce, and inevitably more expensive, the increased price on top of already high maintenance, service and running costs are making it the right time for photo labs to assess their print hardware. Further cost savings include reduced power consumption and water usage, significantly bringing down utility bills. Print Quality Print quality is a key factor when making the switch, and this is a major benefit of the Epson Inkjet range. Epson's industry leading Inkjet technology with wider colour gamut has developed to the level that it is now almost impossible for many customers to see the difference against a traditional silver halide print. The ease of use, with no wet chemistry to contend with, and consistent performance of Epson Inkjet means you don't have to worry about loss of detail or variances in colour balance that can prove a real headache with some other print labs. Productivity With fast start up and shut down speeds, and no time spent on managing wet chemistry, your valuable time is freed up. Managing the lab and the printing process is far simpler making it easier and faster to train staff, and potentially reassessing your staff priorities and requirements.
Colin Bradbury & Ron McRobbie of Robbies Photographic with the Epson D3000 Lab
Working environments are improved with the benefit of a smaller equipment footprint aiding the improvement of workflow, whist many retailers have benefitted from additional product merchandising space created by the switch. Printing Solutions At Tetenal we don't just offer printing machines, we offer printing solutions. Our aim is to find the scalable Epson solution that fits your production requirements, whether you're a professional lab, or a high street retailer. Whether it's an Epson D3000 production lab, a single D700 printer or several D700 printers connected to function as the Epson Micro Lab, Epson's inkjet range stands out through compatibility within its range as well as across other hardware in the industry.

Customers that have made the switch to dry also have plenty to say...
Jason Keys LONDON CAMERA EXCHANGE “The cost of running the wet lab was becoming ever more expensive and after seeing the quality the Epson D3000 delivered it was the obvious switch to make for us. The maintenance of the wet lab was becoming more and more difficult, the new Epson is so much cleaner and economical to run.”
Mark Wickham DONEGAL CAMERA CENTRE Following 20 years in business, the Irish photo retail store based in the heart of Donegal has switched its photo production from a wet minilab to a dry Epson MicroLab from Tetenal earlier this year. After running through six different mini labs in 20 years of business, store owner Mark Wickham explains his decision: “In all these years in business we had absolutely everything in terms of minilabs and I decided it was finally time for the switch to a dry lab solution. Choosing Epson was an obvious move for me due to their reputation in terms of print quality and longevity.”
After exchanging the existing wet lab for the Epson D700 printer connected to two kiosks in May this year, Mark now reflects on the past months: “I was very impressed with the service I received from Tetenal during the installation and training period. I can confidently say that the past 4 months were the best in our 20 years in business. The Epson MicroLab delivers outstanding print quality, is incredibly reliable and most importantly consistent. After years of dealing with photo chemicals I know that print consistency is always a concern with wet labs. With the dry lab these issues are non-existent, it’s a clean system which simply works. Even my electricity bills are lower since the switch to a dry lab, so the list of benefits is long.”
Ron McRobbie ROBBIES PHOTOGRAPHICS "We decided to exchange our Agfa DLab for the Epson D3000 and the existing Canon IPF8100 for an Epson P9000 44" Large Format Printer. For us the outstanding print quality of the Epson range was the convincing factor that led to our decision of upgrading both printers with the Epson counterparts as our business is built on the quality of service we provide. Allied to the ease of use, cost savings, increased range of print sizes we can offer and on-going support with the 3 year warranty, it was really an easy decision in the end.”

The future for photo printing? INTERESTING CHANGES AND developments are being reported in the photo printing landscape by industry watchers Futuresource Consulting. It claims that while standalone wet and dry minilabs accounted for 47% of the 1.16 billion on-site photo prints in Western Europe in the first half of the year, both instant print kiosks and ‘tabletop’ professional inkjet photo printers are continuing to penetrate the market, with over 1,600 instant print kiosks being installed in the same location from January to June 2017. This increased the number of active kiosks by 2% to over 84,000 units, producing 614 million photo prints over the same six-month period. Futuresource says these same kiosks are being optimised to also offer photo gifts, either fulfilled on site or off-site, thereby maximising potential revenue for the photo
A new Futuresource report suggests the print landscape is evolving (image shows prints being examined at the recent Digital Splash event)
retailer. As the industry watcher has stated a couple of times in recent months, it believes one of the reasons for the growth in instant printing across Europe is increased demand from under-35 ‘Millennials’ wanting square and instant prints, albeit in low volumes.
In addition, some 1,500 ‘tabletop’ professional inkjet photo printers were also sold in Western Europe, many of them into the retail photoprinting channel, says Futuresource. While some replaced existing printers, others were taken on to offer additional printing capacity. These printers offer a cost-effective solution to support an existing full-scale wet or dry minilab, can be installed as part of a modular dry minilab or instant print kiosk solution or as a standalone unit, it notes. Consequently, these printers are appealing to some retailers/ retail chains that have not previously offered photo-printing services. However, providing an average output of 410 photo prints per day over this period, minilabs are still currently the on-site photo printing workhorses. www.futuresource-consulting.com
OLYMPUS IN ITS ‘PRIME’ THE PHOTO BRAND has announced two new high quality prime lenses for its Four Thirds system users, both sporting a bright/fast f/1.2 aperture. Arriving this December is the M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.2 PRO at an SRP of £1,199.99. Following in March next year is the M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.2 PRO at £1,299.99 SRP. Showing their mettle, both compact and lightweight lenses are dustproof, splash-proof and freezeproof (to -10°C). With the addition of these optics, Olympus says that it has extended its ‘pro’ line up to a total of nine lenses, covering all needed focal lengths. Want an extra to sell alongside the lenses? THROW THIS IDEA AT THE WALL UNTIL IT STICKS LOOKING FOR A DIFFERENT angle to separate your photo business or minilab from the competition? Here’s a product with the potential to help you do just that: a paste free fabric that can be personalised with photography, in order to create a bespoke wall covering. In fact, Landor Phototex allows any nonporous surface to be transformed into a tailored and unique feature. The pitch here is that the fabric can be printed with any inkjet printer or any ink technology, from small sheets to large rolls. In other words it affords the opportunity to create a bespoke product for customers. Thanks to its exclusive adhesive, Landor Phototex is said to be extremely easy to use, allowing for the fabric to be removed and repositioned time and time again, without causing damage to the wall or the adhesive. Samyang running on auto DISTRIBUTOR INTRO2020 HAS ANNOUNCED a fourth auto focus lens from Korean third party lens manufacturer Samyang in the AF 35mm f/1.4 FE. The bright aperture optic is designed to work in harmony with Sony E-mount cameras, including the A7 or A9 series, and so appeal to enthusiasts and professionals. Promising fast and quiet auto focus, the lens includes 11 elements in 9 groups and features two aspherical lenses and two high refractive lenses, plus ultra multi coating, said to minimise aberrations and unnecessary light dispersion. Available this November via Intro2020, SRP is £599. www.intro2020.co.uk
ANOTHER MONTH, ANOTHER LOMO! LOMOGRAPHY CURRENTLY seems to be releasing new analogue cameras at the rate of knots, the latest being its Lomo’Instant Automat Dahab (above), which, it says, is inspired by beautiful bronze beaches and opulent Egyptian jewellery. The coppery-finished camera is also, it suggests, perfect for the forthcoming gifting season. Both single (camera only at £139) and combo packages (with wide angle, close up and fisheye lens attachments, at £169 SRP) are available. As with other models in its range, this latest instant camera utilises Fujifilm Instax Mini instant film. Furthermore it is celebrating a decade of sales of its Diana F+ camera with a special commemorative edition, called, naturally the 10 Years of Diana F+ Edition (right). Featuring an eyecatching 1960s-inspired design, in matte red and pastel blue, it comes with a special frame included and utilises 120mm film. The fun analogue camera, which is £79 SRP, is also ‘limited’ to 1,500 units worldwide.
Finally, the third and fourth new Lomo cameras this month are the Lomo’Instant Oxford and the Lomo’Instant Yangon, both promising pocket-sized instant memories. The Oxford camera (in a dark olive green) sports what it calls ‘classic British style’, while the Yangon (in creamy metallic gold) has apparently been inspired by ‘glittering domes and pagodas’. The cameras feature a built-in 27mm wide-angle lens and once again are compatible with Fujifilm Instax Mini film. Pricing starts at £79 SRP, with the body plus lens attachment set priced at £105. www.lomography.com
Hasselblad X1D-50c ‘best available medium format sensor’ THE PREMIUM CAMERA BRAND has come out on top in a recent test of the sensor in its X1D-50c medium format camera, as rated by DxOMark, which claims to be the reference for image quality. In fact, it achieved the highest DxOMark score of 102 points for any commercially
available sensor tested. It also said that ‘while the massive resolution, 16-bit color definition, and relatively slow frame rate means the X1D-50c will primarily appeal to studio, portrait, landscape, or high-end advertising and editorial photographers shooting low ISOs,
with a maximum ISO 25,600 setting the X1D-50c should be a viable proposition for low light photographers.’ For more head to: www.dxomark.com

BPI NEWS BUSINESS ADVICE
CHRISTMAS IS COMING… … So, in retail terms, there’s no time to waste. Following the Black Friday feast this month – if you’re participating (see also our advisory feature last month) – comes the most heightened and hopefully prolonged sales period of the year. So, once again, how can you prime your photo business to make the most of it? Business expert Adam Bernstein has Christmas wrapped up…
B
efore we know it, all eyes and thoughts will turn to Christmas, with the season’s festivities – by which we really mean its commerce opportunities – necessitating a change to routine. So once again, it’s a case of planning now for what’s comes later…
Use manufacturer’s promotions to promote yourself Following the spending frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, you’ll still want to ensure that Christmas is the period when wallets open for longer (and, hopefully, wider). This means that switched-on retailers have to work doubly hard (or should do), to both anticipate and serve the Christmas rush, and at the same time scheme away to

generate income in the New Year. Again it’s somewhat a case of predicting what everybody else is doing and trying to be better, while bearing in mind that these days it’s often not until the two weeks before Christmas that business really hots up. This is when you might start to see things shift that aren’t even covered by seasonal cashbacks or similar sweeteners. Nevertheless, these days, particularly with the transparency of the Internet, people do take notice of, and moreover expect, to be able to grab something extra. To warm up customers, you could offer a daily deal promotion on your website – if you’re canny, you’ll see if it can tie in with any cash-back promotions that manufacturers are offering in the run up to Christmas and early into the New Year. By definition this
means ensuring that all staff are aware of any and all promotions that make purchases less expensive for customers at what is an expensive time of year (keeping an eye on BPI News’ news pages isn’t a bad bet – Ed). Going beyond the traditional January sales (which now seem to start on Christmas Eve), is it worth running a New Year promotion for a limited period – say a free filter with every lens, or a loyalty card that offers a 10% discount, once five stamps (one per purchase) have been collected to reward returning customers? Clearly, this would need to be price sensitive – you don’t want five purchases of, say, inexpensive accessories, leading to 10% off a DSLR body. As with any time of year, seek to collect information on
your customers, especially email addresses. Send, with consent, targeted offers to your customers. But to do this properly (like Amazon does) means looking back at what the customer has previously bought. If you don’t currently capture this information, change your methods so that you do. The process helps cross-sell and up-sell with the incentive – for the customer – of an extra discount. As ever though it’s a question of balance and the trick is to not overload customers with mailings.
Be festive, but don’t make it taxing Christmas is a time for giving and you may feel inspired to spread some Christmas cheer with small token gifts to staff. What many may

December. With such a deluge in mail that needs to meet a finite date, Royal Mail tries to help by listing the last recommended posting dates for items to reach far-flung parts of the UK (and the world). Details can be found at www.royalmail.com/greetings. To arrive in time for Christmas, inland 2nd class has to be sent by 20 December while Special Delivery needs to be posted by 22 December. Of course, you may use other firms to get your products to customers; check and diarise their delivery cut-offs. Disappointment leads to lost custom and a haranguing on social media. So whatever you do, manage the expectations of customers. There are a number of cases where angry customers have vented their fury over Christmas deliveries arriving late – Citylink in 2012 and Yodel in 2013 being prime examples. Customers will blame you as much as the courier if their order arrives late (or not at all).
“To warm up customers, you could offer a daily deal promotion on your website – if you’re canny, you’ll see if it can tie in with any cashback promotions that manufacturers are offering in the run up to Christmas and early into the New Year. By definition this means ensuring that all staff are aware of any and all promotions.”
not realise, however, is that there are various HMRC rules that need following to avoid staff being hit with a tax bill for receiving your gift. The key points to remember here are that gifts should be under £50, shouldn’t be cash or a cash voucher, there should be no contractual right to the gift, and the gift should not be a reward for good service. HMRC classes certain items such as chocolate and wine or a Christmas pudding as ‘trivial’ and therefore outside of tax reporting. Remember that the recipient’s taste may not be the same as yours! Further HMRC guidance on this can be found at: www.gov.uk/hmrc-internalmanuals/employment-incomemanual/eim21864.
while predictably Boxing Day is a Tuesday and New Year’s Day is the following Monday (Tuesday in Scotland). This means deposits will take much longer to clear than normal. HSBC, for example, doesn’t send automated electronic payments on non-working days. With cheques, funds are generally available on the third working day after deposit, but it’s not until the sixth day after deposit that funds become nonreturnable. That said, from the end of October, some banks will allow images of cheques to be banked electronically. With this new process, a cheque submitted on one weekday should become cleared funds the next working day. See www. chequeandcredit.co.uk/informationhub/faqs/cheque-imaging. An alternative that has gained significant traction is the use of the (free) Faster Payment Service offered by most, but not all, banks, which means that a Faster Payment should go through within two hours (but generally instantly) without charge. However, on occasions, a Faster Payment can take until the following day to show up in an account. So a wise business moves monies a day or so earlier than needed, especially when salaries need paying between Christmas and New Year. Remember to exercise caution with Faster Payments. A destination bank account that is mistakenly keyed can mean money goes to the wrong destination, instantly, and because of confidentiality can be difficult to retrieve. Details on the institutions that are part of the Faster Payment Service can be seen at www.fasterpayments. org.uk/about-us/current-participants. The dates of forthcoming bank holidays are available on the government website at www.gov.uk/bank-holidays.

And for the quieter moments… These days most retail doesn’t shut up shop over Christmas, but you may have occasional lulls. If you’ve time between Christmas and New Year – and are not simply looking forward to a well-earned breather – use it to become more energy efficient. There are simple, cost saving steps that can bring you benefits, not just over the Christmas period but also into the New Year. Some cost cutting measures are simple and can be done on the fly. These include: fitting energy efficient lights; turning off equipment – computers, copiers – setting security lights to be off by default (with any motion re-activating them); dialling the thermostat down or ideally switching it off (the Carbon Trust reckon that even lowering settings by a single degree can reduce bills by 8%); not heating unused areas or preventing furniture from obstructing radiators; as well as lagging pipes and checking for draughts. NEW EU DATA PROTECTION LAW Christmas aside, a spot of house keeping for businesses: Data protection law has recently been updated by Europe and will be in place from 25 May 2018. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will directly affect all member states, and the UK is to implement the legislation, which will replace the Data Protection Act 1998. Changes will be required, and, if not made, firms risk considerable fines and reputational damage. Indeed, under the GDPR, organisations breaching the law could face a fine of up to 4% of annual worldwide turnover, or €20m (whichever is the greater). Under the GDPR, there is additional information needing providing. Firms will have to tell data subjects – in our case, customers and staff – the legal basis for processing their data, the data retention period, and of their right to complain to the Information Commissioner. There is also a requirement that privacy notices are concise, easy to understand and in clear language. The GDPR offers new rights for having inaccuracies corrected, to have information erased while stopping direct marketing, as well as a right to data portability. The GDPR also says that consent to use personal data cannot be inferred from silence, pre-ticked boxes or inactivity. There is presently no general obligation to report any data breaches, but the GDPR radically changes this and creates an obligation to report data protection breaches that could cause an individual harm within 72 hours. For more info, see: https://ico.org.uk/fororganisations/data-protectionreform/overview-of-the-gdpr/

WANT A BESTSELLER? IT’S ON THE CARDS… Photo by Nina Robinson, Recipient of a Getty Images Instagram Grant
WITH THE LIKES OF FUTURESOURCE recently telling us that the Instagram and selfie generation are buoying up the photo printing market, it’s perhaps not so surprising that respected image library Getty Images has just awarded $10,000 each to three Instagram photographers. The recipients of its 2017 Getty Images Instagram Grant, who are from the USA and India, will also get mentorship from a Getty Images photojournalist and the opportunity to have their work showcased in the Getty Images Gallery in London. Getty says that the partnership and grant recognises Instagram has introduced new opportunities for emerging image makers, outside the mainstream media, to create and share projects of social importance – and supports Getty Images’ wider commitment to nurturing emerging talent. The winners were selected from among a group of nominated visual artists. Nominations were made by a committee of industry experts who looked at the existing body of work represented on the nominee’s Instagram account, focusing on

the quality of their imagery, their photographic skills, relevance of their projects and stories told through their photos. “At Getty Images we believe in the power of images to move the world, so we are proud to continue our collaboration with Instagram to champion and support new and important voices in visual storytelling via the Getty Images Instagram Grant.” says Getty Images Vice President of News, Hugh Pinney. “We’re honoured to collaborate with Getty Images to recognise this year’s grant winners,” adds Pamela Chen, Instagram’s Head of Creative, Community. “It’s incredible to see how the photography community —from documentarians to young, emerging photographers—is using Instagram to speak to the world’s most critical issues through their work.” For more information about the Getty Images Instagram Grant program and to view the awarded portfolios, visit http://wherewestand. gettyimages.com/gi_grants/ instagram-grant/#how_to_apply.
LOOKING FOR AN EASY SELLER you can keep on the counter top – and one that has ideal gifting potential as a stocking filler on the run up to Christmas? Then look no further than this clever, camerathemed ‘Clash of the Cameras’ card game that recalls the ‘trumps’ packs of old. Beautifully illustrated by Peter Levenspiel at Lens Lab, and with BPI News’ own Michael O’Connell involved, the idea was inspired by the fact that whilst there are loads of different card-based one-upmanship games in the

market, covering just about every topic, the camera industry was seemingly completely ignored. The cards are pitched as suitable for camera lovers as well as being the perfect stocking filler for all ages, and offering potentially hours of fun playing famous cameras off against each other, SRP is £8.99. Bags under your eyes at 40 THE TENBA BRAND may be celebrating its fourth decade, but the two new Special Edition DNA 8 and DN15 Slim messenger-style camera bags it’s issuing to mark its 40th anniversary are looking decidedly sprightly. Available in time for Christmas, the pair of carrying options are being pitched as perfect for the mirror-less camera or DSLR photographer, in offering both style and protection. At £80 SRP, the Messenger DNA 8 can house a mirror-less camera, two to three lenses and a tablet around the size of an iPad Mini. By contrast the £120 Messenger DNA 15 Slim can carry a mirror-less camera or DSLR with four to six lenses, or even a DSLR with 70-200mm f/2.8 lens
attached, plus 15-inch laptop or iPad. Tenba says both the limited edition bags feature water repellent 600 denier Helix fabric, rip-stop nylon, YKK zippers and welded steel D-rings plus heavily reinforced stitching. Once again MAC Group is the supplier the trade should head for, with availability for the bags promised from November 1st. www.tenba.com
