Frontier-S: the new star of the show
rom the flagship X-Pro 1 and X-T1 models downwards, Fujifilm’s X series of interchangeable lens cameras seek to target a broad range of price points and enthusiasts. The new X-A2 premium interchangeable lens compact with flip up screen to enable easier ‘selfies’ is the affordable option, and, particularly, in its brown leather-like iteration (silver version also available), a real eye catcher. The X-A2 has the advantage over rival CSCs of its physically larger APS-C sensor, here providing 16.3 megapixels. For those adopting the X system for the first time there’s the advantage of the bundled 16-50mm Mark II kit lens in matching silver, suitable for both landscape and portraiture. A further bonus is the compositional LCD screen that tilts through 175° to offer a wide degree of creative flexibility. The camera retails for a suggested £499.99 (in Currys currently at a bargain £399). Bolstering its X series camera support, the brand has also recently announced a trio of lenses. These are the Fujinon XF16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR lens, available now at a suggested £899.99, the XC16-50mm II lens and the XC50-230mm II lens. The ‘WR’ of the 16-55mm zoom denotes that it is weather resistant – hence offering a great match for Fujifilm’s weather-resistant X-T1. Also offering weather and dust resistance and well worth checking out at the show is its expansive Fujinon XF50-140mm f2.8 R LM OIS WR zoom. This offers a constant

bright f/2.8 aperture throughout its focal range to deliver beautiful ‘bokeh’, while the length of the lens barrel also remains constant throughout the entire zoom range. The world’s first Triple Linear Motor also delivers fast and quiet auto focusing. Suggested retail price is £1249.99. The Photography Show is further providing photographers with the prefect opportunity to quiz Fujifilm about its newly revealed future lens release roadmap (as shown), detailing forthcoming X Mount lenses compatible with its CSC line up. Freshly announced are: the XF120mm f/2.8 R Macro telephoto lens to arrive in 2016 and the XF35mm f/2 R, a compact and lightweight standard focal length lens, arriving latter half of this year. We also get the promise of a 1.4x Teleconverter for its XF50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR, XF120mm f/2.8 R Macro and XF100-400mm, arriving in 2016. www.fujifilm.co.uk

Olympus invites you to take ‘5’
T
he brand new OM-D EM-5 Mark II builds on the precedent set by the earlier E-M1 and E-M5. At £899 SRP for the body, it continues the system’s ethos of being as compact yet as powerful as possible for the target audience of photo enthusiasts. The target group is 30+ male and female photography enthusiasts but also those keen on movies. The concept behind the Mark II is ‘freedom to tell your spectacular stories.’ With a definite shift towards CSC – stats suggest that 30% of the interchangeable lens camera market will be CSC by 2016 – the E-M5’s successor comes with a better shutter mechanism, while being dust proof, splash-proof and now freeze proof. “This is a camera for people who want to get up in the morning when it’s raining,” suggests Olympus. As you’d expect of an OM-D, it also features 5-axis Image Stabilisation, to deliver a claimed ‘heavily improved’ video capability. With HDMI output and increased bit rate, it’s now possible to record in variable frame rates from 24fps to 60fps. The LCD also now swivels as well as ‘merely’ tilting and boasts touch screen control. More exciting still is a 40MP high resolution shot mode described as ‘breakthrough’. This captures and combines 8 successive images to produce one ultra high-resolution file, taking 2.5 seconds to process and deliver the shot. Ideal for commercial photographers shooting in the studio and quicker than a Hasselblad, says Olympus, the big claim is that it’s also better for detail than many full frame cameras. The E-M5 additionally features Wi-Fi control, enabling a smartphone to be used as a remote control, 1/8000s mechanical shutter plus 2.36 million-dot eye-level electronic viewfinder (EVF). What’s more a new flexible FL-LM3 mini flashgun is bundled with the camera for ultra convenience and maximum clarity of results. A whopping four body + lens kit options are available: with 14-42mm (at £1099), 12-50mm (£1099), 14150mm (£1249), 12-40mm Pro f/2.8 (£1499).
The photo stalwart has a new OM-D to show off at the NEC – and much more besides, including talks from photographer ambassadors – on stands C51 and B49 Framing your subject made easy – with the Dot Sight accessory, above, for long tele work and the tilt and turn flippable screen you can view from both sides of the lens, below

New accessories to partner Introduced alongside the E-M5 MkII is an Arca Swiss compatible ECG-2 accessory grip, plus a newer version of its popular battery grip in the HDL-8, which features a headphone jack. Further add-ons include a selfpowered, hotshoe-mounted EE-1 dot sight, plus PT-EP13 underwater case. In tandem with the E-M5 MkII, Olympus announced a new 7-14mm lens for this summer, plus a ‘Pro’ class 8mm fisheye eye lens with f/1.8 aperture in development, which, when released, will be the fastest on
the market, it claims. Also new from Olympus is an improved M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm 1:4.0-5.6 II all-in-one lens. With weatherproofed, lightweight construction and compact size it’s being suggested as a perfect partner to the EM-5. That’s not the only new accessory this month: there’s a new flash for the OM-D series as well as the HLD-8 grip – so five new products in total – whilst the promotion offering a free HLD-7 grip worth £189.99 on buying an E-M1 now continues until March 31st. On top of this there’s a new firmware upgrade to download for the E-M1.
The widest wide angle lens in its compact class at 21-105mm? Check. More than one shutter release button, for ease-of-capture and simpler ‘selfies’ no matter which way is up? Check. A 3-inch tilting LCD screen so you will also be able to get any angle on the action? That too. Additionally the latest 16 megapixel crushproof, freezeproof, waterproof and shockproof compact boasts Wi-Fi enabled remote control via smartphone. On sale now, it comes with a free six-month warranty extension for anyone signing up online for MyOlympus membership. Extras to grab when you purchase a TG-860 include a hands-free CSCH-123 Sport Holder, PT-057 Underwater Case, slip-proof CSCH-124 Silicone Jacket, CSCH121 Soft Camera Case and CHS-09 Floating Handstrap. Sample all of the above, plus the Olympus Pen camera series, including the latest E-PL7 aimed at fashion bloggers, by heading over to Olympus’ spectacular stand. Speakers include Damian McGillicuddy, who will be shooting live on stage, Steve Gosling, Edmond Terakopian, Ben Russell, Lindsay Dobson, John Nassari, R. Cleveland Aaron, Jeremy Hunter, Robert Pugh, Mick Hutson, Ed Farrelly and Nicholas Goodden. Olympus technicians will also be offering free lens and camera body cleaning for Olympus users, subject to availability. www.olympus.co.uk

Twice the gear, twice the excitement Y
ou might know Tiffen for its class leading filter ranges, but other products that sit under its umbrella include the world famous Steadicam support, as well as tough-wearing Domke-branded camera bags. Add another name to the list in Lowel lights and it’s quickly apparent that Tiffen is fast becoming a one-stop solution. Distributor Swains might not be as familiar name to those outside the trade, but the distributor is a regular at the NEC each March. Sharing H61 with Tiffen, it will be showcasing the newest products to hit the UK market – including the Cactus V6 flash trigger, light emitting ‘Pixelstick’ and Lexar Hub and Workflow system storage options.
Manufacturer Tiffen and distributor Swains can be found sharing a booth at stand H61, seeking to entice you with a selection of goodies of every photographic description…
Domke bags hold your gear safely – while you get stable movies with Steadicam
Anyone for Tiffen? The Lowel lights range comprises the Lowel Blender, Lowel GL-1 and Lowel GL-Pro. Picking one to spotlight, the inventive pitch for the Lowel GL-1 Power LED at £499 is that it places Hollywood-style lighting in the palm of your hand. Designed for use handheld and originally devised with the wedding and events markets in mind, the tungsten light is further promised to be powerful, focusable and dimmable. With the high ISO capabilities of the current raft of DSLRs and CSCs allowing them to be utilised in lower light locations, the GL-1’s capabilities can eke out just the right amount of light required for the image being created, whether shooting up close or from a distance. Its versatility also makes it a choice for photographers looking to achieve light painting style effects. Steadicam is a very familiar name in the film industry, but now that increasing numbers of photographers are branching out into video capture on their DSLRs and CSCs, there is every reason why you might consider purchasing one yourself. Have a look at the Steadicam Smoothee for smartphones or action cameras, Steadicam Solo for DSLRs or camcorders and Steadicam Curve for GoPro-type products on the stand – there’s something in the range for everyone. Whether you just want to protect your camera lens or achieve a specific
Tiffen filters (centre) and Lowel LED and video lights(left) add colour and impact – Pixelstick (example above) creates amazing light trail effects during long exposues
creative effect, Tiffen filters are long established in the market – having won Academy Awards – and again there is a broad range of options available. Showing at TPS are Tiffen’s Variable ND and XLE filters, as well as the Tiffen Blender/Attenuator, One Side Coated UVP and HT filters. You’ll want a rugged camera bag to put all of the above in, and here Tiffen can again help courtesy of its Domke camera bags. On display are its Next Generation
and Heritage line-ups. The former range’s shoulder, satchel, courier and messenger-type bags come equipped with all the bells and whistles you’d imagine, including the ability to customise inner compartments to suit your shooting style. Heritage bags meanwhile are the choice for photojournalists and street photographers, with the subtly hardwearing design the brand is renowned for. See more at www.tiffen.com
Be swayed by Swains Another product imminently gracing the UK market and on display at the NEC is the Pixelstick (see more at www.thepixelstick.com), for use by photographers for producing light paintings. It’s comprised of 200 full colour RGB LEDS inside a lightweight aluminium housing. Needing to be seen at the show to be fully appreciated, a mounted controller reads images from an SD card and displays them, one line at a time, on the LEDs. Each LED then corresponds to a pixel in the image. In this way it’s possible to light-paint photo realistic images, abstract designs and animation into your long exposure and time-lapse photography. Suggested retail price is £329. Further products worth seeing on stand H61 include the Cactus V6 (www.cactus-image.com) and Lexar Hub and Workflow System (www.lexar.com/workflow). The Cactus V6 is a wireless flash transceiver that is notable for being the world’s first wireless trigger that controls the power of Canon, Nikon and Pentax system flashes all at the same time. The user simply selects the pre-installed flash mode on the unit to remotely control the flash power output of the selected flash model (as precisely as in 0.1Ev increments for some models). It can also directly control a Cactus RF60 wireless flash set to Slave mode and is compatible with practically all cameras that come with a standard hot shoe or female sync port connection. Lastly the Lexar line up of data hubs and workflow solutions is well worth photographers investigating – particularly if they want to safely and securely store all those thousands of images and video clips. Products include a choice of two four-bay reader and storage drive hubs, a selection of card readers, and two storage drives. Its innovative, modular design allows photographers to create a custom setup, while the high-speed performance lets you offload and back up your work, faster. Pick and choose the right combination for your needs, and take control of your workflow by heading to stand H61.

Gaze at Nikon’s star attractions
ith its branding suggesting ‘I am different’, Nikon is encouraging you to ‘think outside of the box’ at The Photography Show. As well as checking out its brand new line up of class leading cameras and accessories, including D7200 and D810A DSLRs, it’s well worth dropping by stand E31/D31 to soak up advice from talks hosted on the Nikon School stage. Speakers include Kate Hopewell-Smith, renowned for her lifestyle and wedding photography, and Kirsty Mitchell, who has gained a cult following for her whimsical and creative Wonderland series. Brand ambassadors Mark Pain, John Wright, Mark Seymour and Bob Martin are also sharing advice with stand visitors, as will fine art fashion photographer Miss Aniela, landscape photographer Jeremy Walker and wildlife photographer Chris Gomersall.
D810A with ideal starfield lens, 20mm f/1.8
Plenty new to touch ‘n’ try In terms of new kit to touch and try, there’s plenty. January saw Nikon launch three sub-£100 Coolpix point and shoots in the S3700, S2900 and L31 to coincide with the CES event in Las Vegas. February saw the brand add to that tally to coincide with Japan’s CP+ show, with a further seven compacts in the marginally more high end L340, L840, P610, S9900, S7000, AW130 and S33 – the latter two being ‘toughened’ models – along with a variation of its acclaimed D810, this time with an ‘A’ suffix to indicate its target audience of star-gazing astro photographers. Nikon believes that with the D810A, photographers will be able to capture the true colours of nebulae. The camera retails for £2999.99, with May availability.
The photo giant has already announced 14 major new products so far this year, including DSLRs and super zooms, all ready to be explored on its hard-to-miss interactive new stand E31/D31
Made available in time for the show is the new 24.2 megapixel D7200, below, an APS-C sensor DSLR announced at the start of the month, available as a body only option for £939.99 or with 18-105mm VR zoom for £1119.99 all-in. The camera comes with what’s described as a ‘pro-grade’ AF system, 3.2-inch LCD, plus NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity for the sharing of shots. Also new, and useful for those who want to record crisp audio when shooting video with their DSLR is a ME-W1 Wireless Microphone at £239.99, which can function from up to 50ft away. Likewise available now is the equally new Coolpix P900, above, sporting a whopping 83x optical zoom
stretching from 242000mm in 35mm terms, plus tilting 3-inch LCD, GPS, Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, for £499.99. Among the other exciting Nikon compacts for you to examine at the show, latest additions include the 60x zoom, 16 megapixel P610, which also boasts a 5-stop VR anti-shake system, 400 shots battery duration, Full HD video, Wi-Fi and GPS capability, along with newly added NFC. Available in black or red, it’s priced at £339.99. Next up is the L840, offering an increased 38x optical zoom range, along with Wi-Fi, NFC and a tilt screen. This Full HD camera runs on AA batteries and comes in black, red or plum bodies for £209.99 SRP. The second instalment in the L-series duo is the L340, a UK exclusive model with 20MP CCD and 28x optical zoom. If you’re considering a new ‘superzoom’, how about the Nikon S9900, top right, which boasts a retro titanium silver or classic black design, vari-angle screen, 30x optical zoom,
Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS connectivity, leather grip and an SRP of £279.99. The S7000 meanwhile is being pitched as its slimmest and lightest superzoom at just 27mm thick’. The 16MP model costs £169.99. If you’re planning summer holidays you’ll also want to look at a couple of new ‘tough’ Nikons in the AW130 (yellow, above), designed to appeal to the adventurer, plus the S33, which is for family use. With the former the more heavy duty of the pair, use is down to a depth of 30 metres. The AW130 further offers a 5x optical zoom, freeze-proofing to -10°C, shock proofing against drops from a height of two metres, plus a 16MP CMOS chip for £279.99. The S33 (top left, in white) meanwhile has a 13MP CMOS sensor, is waterproof up to 10 metres and shockproof to 1.5 metres. With a 3x zoom it’s available in blue, pink, white or our favourite of canary yellow.

Canon’s ‘boundary breaking’ 50MP DSLRs & more in store Four new DSLRs, only its second ever CSC, plus a full frame lens, two printers, a new IXUS and a PowerShot ensure that visitors have plenty of reason to drop by Canon stand B11
A
s well as the promise of interactive shooting experiences and talks from photographer ambassadors including Jeff Ascough, Phil Coats, Danny Green and Simeon Quarrie, the big draw at The Photography Show is every sense is undoubtedly Canon’s new pair of 50 megapixel DSLRs, a further couple of 24MP entry level models, plus only its second-ever small format system camera in the EOS M3. The brand also promises to have its EOS 7D Mark II on display, along with its range of Pixma and large format printers on the stand, where visitors can further explore ‘irista’, its secure online space for storing images, and see how such images can be used for the creation of HD photo books. Claiming to ‘break the boundaries of 35mm sensors’, the EOS 5DS and 5DS R are two full frame DSLRs seeking to deliver on that promise via their whopping 50.6 megapixel sensors. The ‘R’ variant seeks to tease out a tad more detail via a low pass cancelation filter. ISO has been kept to a basic range of 100-6400, manually expandable to a broader ISO50 and 12800. Visible through the viewfinder are three in-camera crop modes: 1.3x, 1.6x (still delivering 19MP shots) and 1:1. Other key selling points include a 3.2-inch LCD, 5fps burst shooting, weather resilient magnesium alloy body and 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type points. There is a wait until June for both DSLRs – and so time for you
to save to afford the £2,999.99 SRP for the 5DS and £3,199.99 for its ‘R’ sibling. Don’t miss out on the cashback promotion Canon is running to coincide, with deals on selected lenses when bought with either DSLR. Also new is a compatibly weather proofed full frame wide angle zoom in the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM. SRP is £2,799.99, and it’s available now. Canon’s second ever CSC in the EOS M3 is also playing the numbers game in featuring a 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor, 49-point AF and latest gen Digic 6 processor. The new model, arriving two years after the original EOS M, a veritable age in digital camera years, features a touch screen, here tilting up to 180° and down by 45°, plus Wi-Fi and NFC. As with its forebear, the pitch here is ‘the power of EOS, only smaller’. Availability is from April at £599.99 SRP. Almost easy to over-look given the above big news are two more
affordable DSLRs in the EOS 750D (£599.99) and 760D (£649.99 body only); the latter being the more enthusiast-targeted of the two. As with the equally new EOS M3, both DSLRs feature 24.2 MP CMOS sensor and Digic 6 processor and come with a vari-angle LCD. The 760D is said to be the one for budding filmmakers, courtesy of a raft of additional creative movie modes, including HDR and miniature effect, and this model also differentiates itself via Wi-Fi and NFC. There is a further sales option for the 750D that witnesses it twinned with an EF-S 18-55mm IS

STM zoom for £689.99 all-in. There are now, incredibly, 15 cameras in the current EOS line up. Heavyweight releases aside, those pocket compacts also keep coming: a new PowerShot in the SX 410 IS and IXUS 275 HS join the six PowerShots and IXUS’s announced at the start of January. Head over now to the Canon stand to get ‘hands on’ at the show.

Taking things slowly…
More than fifty shades of grey from Vü
Vü filters New to the MAC Group portfolio are US-designed Vü filters. The range comprises the best in UV, Polarization, and Neutral Density filters for filmmakers and photographers. Utilising only the highest quality materials, innovative coating processes, and patented technologies to create its products, Vü Filters are available in two series. The Ariel circular screw-in filters boast white balance multi-coating described as ‘revolutionary’ for improved light transmission. UV and Circular Polarizing filters are available in sizes from 37mm to 82mm. The Sion series filters utilise the same high quality finishes but add a Flat Wave Overcoat, a specially developed optical coating that gives the filter’s surface a ‘smootherthan-glass’ finish, making filter maintenance and care much easier. In addition to UV and Circular Polarizing filters, the Sion range also includes Variable Neutral Density filters that block light between 1-5 stops, plus fixed Neutral Density filters in 1, 2, 3 and 10 stop versions. In addition 100mm square ND and ND grad filters plus a 100mm filter round off the range. Vü filters will be launched at The Photography Show.
Benro Benro is already a familiar brand in the market place, having built a strong reputation as a reliable and innovative manufacturer of camera supports. Designed for aspiring and advancing photographers and filmmakers, Benro products are aimed at helping to take your photography to the next level, no matter what level you are at. Products such as the Travel Angel, Flat Traveller and Combination Series are proving extremely popular – yet the manufacturer isn’t resting on its laurels. Its Italian design studio
is busy working with the factory to create ever-innovative new product ranges, including both tripods and heads, to help Benro broaden its appeal even further. You’re in the right place at the right time, however, as these new products are making their global debut at The Photography Show. As the world of imaging keeps evolving and more photographers are keen to exploit the capability for shooting moving images as well as shooting stills, Benro is listening and adapting, as the functions offered by tripods designed for photography are very different to those needed for shooting video. You’ll be pleased to hear that it already has an impressive range of tripods and heads designed with shooting moving images in mind – tripods that feature rapid levelling capability, combined with heads that offer super smooth fluid pans and tilt movement, both helping to create the best quality video footage.
Vü filters are the perfect way to enhance your carefully planned landscape work – no matter how long an exposure you want to use. They keep the colour neutral and fit all popular filter system holders
… or keeping up with the action set Tenba has redesigned the action-ready belt level working camera bag – ideal for climbing and cycling – to beat sling style for fast working – ideal for action cams
It’s also great for compact camera system outfits, providing a safe lens changing platform
Induro MAC Group’s premium support brand, Induro tripods are targeted at established and forward thinking photographers, with the aim of delivering advanced and specialised products to help them excel at either their job or their passion. The goal for Induro supports is simple: to design and produce the finest camera supports possible, always using the best materials and production methods. The result is products that offer the best stability and robustness with no unnecessary gimmicks. Although previously available in the UK market, there’s a brand new range of Induro tripods on display at The Photography Show – so make sure you drop by stand D120 on your visit. www.macgroupeu.com

AP Award winner Sigma takes a stand
T
hink photography and visualise cameras, lenses and accessories… and that’s exactly what Sigma has announced in spades just in time for exhibiting here at The Photography Show. Among the new products are two new Quattro branded cameras in the dp0 and the dp3, which, along with the previously released dp1 and dp2 models, bring the quirky, award-winning compact line up to four. Featuring Sigma’s proprietary Foveon X3 direct image sensor, which effectively delivers the equivalent of 29 megapixels, the dp0 incorporates a 14mm f/4 lens equivalent to 21mm in 35mm terms. Sigma suggests the camera is best suited to architectural photography, landscapes and the photographing of interior spaces. For anyone wanting to further expand the contents of their kit bag, there is a dedicated VF-51 optical viewfinder available as an optional extra. The second new camera announcement in the dp3 comes with a 50mm f/2.8 lens attached, providing the 35mm equivalent of 75mm. The optional FT-1201 conversion lens magnifies the focal length by 1.2 times, making it a 90mm equivalent in 35mm terms. The dp3 is perfect for anyone wanting a camera suitable for mid telephoto and macro range photography. The remaining two options in the dp1 and dp2 are for wide angle and ‘standard’ photography respectively. Suitable as an extra for any of the dp Quattro series is a new BG-11 base grip announced alongside the dp0 and dp3, which can be threaded into the tripod mount of the cameras for what’s being described as ‘handgrip-style shooting’. In turn the bottom of the base grip itself has a screw hole via which it can be attached directly to a tripod. As availability and pricing for the new kit was still to be decided as we went to press, please talk to the Sigma team direct at The Photography Show.
Fresh from its 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens winning ‘Best Fixed Lens’ and overall ‘Best Product’ at the Amateur Photographer magazine awards, Sigma shares what it is showcasing in Birmingham…
Contemporary 150-600mm, above, and tripod mount grip for Sports version, left Award-winning 50mm, below
Left, new 24mm f/1.4; above and right, dp0 Quattro, and FT-1201
dp3 Quattro, left; and dp2 with BG-11
More modern ‘Art’ Alongside the new Quattro compact duo and accessories, Sigma isn’t forgetting its bread and butter, and so there are also new interchangeable lenses for Sigma,
Canon and Nikon DSLR mounts. The ‘big beast’ here in its Contemporary lens category is the 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM, which is being pitched as the more affordable, compact and lightweight version of the ‘Sports’ lens with the same focal
range, which was first shown at Photokina last year. The thinking is that this lens enables easier handling making it possible to do handheld photography for longer periods of time, while the tripod socket is detachable for transportation. Speaking of which, a further new product arrives in the TS-81 Tripod Socket for the Sports configuration of the lens as an optional lens foot. There are two screw hole sizes: 1/4 and 3/8-inch. Placed into its ‘Art’ lens category is the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM, a large aperture wide angle lens suitable for you to capture everything from expansive cityscapes to a star-filled night sky, its maker claims, as well as delivering a smooth ‘bokeh’ effect and aiding those who might want to work in lower light conditions. Like all Sigma lenses, it’s made in Japan and this optic includes a Super Multi-Layer Coating which reduces flare and ghosting, the bayonet mount is of brass construction, and the product is further compatible with Sigma’s optional USB Dock, which allows for a degree of future proofing and the direct download of Firmware upgrades. Availability date and pricing for this lens is a suggested £799.99, although expect a lower street price. Sigma and Canon fits are available this month with Nikon to follow in April and the date for the Sony fit still to be confirmed. Also worth checking out at the show is the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens, recent winner of ‘Best Fixed Lens’ and Best Product’ at the 2015 Amateur Photographer awards. This is in addition to the 50mm bagging EISA and Gear of the Year awards and DP Review Readers’ Choice Best Lens of 2014 award – so there’s absolutely no excuse not to be considering it. www.sigma-imaging-uk.com

STAND C61
21-24 MARCH 2015 THE NEC, BIRMINGHAM
Four play from Panasonic T
here is a lot of buzz around 4K capture at the moment and, feeding such excitement, Panasonic is demonstrating the unique capabilities of extracting an 8 megapixel still from a 4K video file and printing up to A3 in size on show stand C61. With the theme of the stand being 4K all the way, arguably it’s not until you witness demo’s such as this first hand that it’s possible to really get a handle on the potential value of this facility. The manufacturer is naturally one of the big draws at the NEC, where it’s appearing with a full programme of events and photographer brand ambassadors to win hearts and educate minds. Riding high on critical acclaim for its 4K shooting cameras in the Lumix DMC-GH4, FZ1000, LX100 and Androidpowered CM1 device announced last year, newly on display will be the retro styled GF7 (not 4K incidentally) compact system camera along with its TZ70 flagship travel zoom. The show is also acting as the official launch for the one-inch sensor incorporating CM1, which is getting a nation-wide release having been trialed in key retail outlets earlier this year. Limited quantities are available for purchase right here, right now, via the London Camera Exchange and Camera World stands. The Lumix DMC-CM1’s super-slim slim profile ensures the ultimate in portability. Currently operating with Android 4.4 or KitKat OS, a firmware upgrade to the next generation Lollipop OS is promised this May. Key attributes include that one-inch CMOS chip, Leica DC lens, 4.7-inch screen, Raw image capture, plus 4K video recording (3840x2160 pixels) at 15fps, in addition to Full HD 1920x1080 at 30fps. Two special modes – ‘4K PreBurst’ and ‘4K Photo’ – also make the most of the ultra high resolution. The former records 45 frames right before and after the shutter has been released, enabling the photographer to choose which image to save. The 4K photo mode meanwhile delivers the wow of allowing a 8 megapixel still to be extracted from a frame of 4K video, in-camera. Regular retail price is £799.
The electronics giant is promising attendees at The Photography Show four activity-packed days showcasing 4K capabilities on its stand C61 and much more besides…
WIN A CM1: Panasonic will be giving away one DMC-CM1 every day at the show – visitors need to look out for the CM1 chocolate bar at the entrance of the show and if they find the ‘Golden Ticket’, they’ll receive a free CM1.
Family movie shoot with still frame grabbing potential using GH4, above. Mark Baber of Panasonic, right, says: “Come along, take photographs… get a print made on the stand”

Get hands on and talk to the experts If the above sounds enticing, there will be plenty of opportunity to get handy tips and advice from not just professionals using Panasonic kit but also the manufacturer’s in-house imaging team, including Product Specialist Mark Baber, who you’ll find on the stand each day of the event. “The theme is 4K; it’s about all speed, motion and communication,” Mark promises us. “We have seven of our ambassadors at the show each day in addition to our Panasonic training team. We’re producing an enthusiastic and energetic display with a real fun element to it. “Everything from our 4K imaging category is on display. We’ve got 4K camcorders and our new TZ compact range, plus the GF7. Last year we had a seminar theatre area, but this year we’re changing things up a gear so our photographer ambassadors can talk one-to-one with our customers, live on our stand. It’s more interactive than ever.” Naturally when, rather than if, you find some Panasonic kit at the show you’re interested in buying, head over to Panasonic’s retail partners at the show in Camera World and LCE who – if past experience is anything to go by – will doubtless will be able to offer you some very enticing show deals. As a spot of theatre Panasonic is carrying out live demonstrations each day featuring athletes skilled in taekwondo, fencing and gymnastics. It will also be printing out 4K images before your very eyes using equipment and media supplied by Fotospeed, and at the time of writing there were plans afoot to include flying drones on the Panasonic stand, as well as some unusual structures by way of displaying the kit. “We’re expecting that to be very exciting and are inviting visitors to the show to come along, take photographs with our cameras, take the SD card out and then get a print made on the stand, so people can walk away with prints and experience 4K photography for themselves,” enthuses Mark. So don’t tarry – head now to Panasonic stand C61. www.panasonic.co.uk
WHAT TO SEE There’s a full programme for visitors and most of it is free…
21-24 MARCH 2015 THE NEC, BIRMINGHAM
T
he Photography Show returns to the NEC for the second year since it took over the mantle of Focus on Imaging. Set to be the UK’s largest photographic event, you will find a whole host of exhibitors, workshops and seminars to enjoy. Returning to the NEC from Saturday to Tuesday, March 21st to 24th, it is now located in Hall 5, the NEC’s largest hall – for a better visitor experience, more space, more places to eat, and closer to the rail station. A Food Gallery has been added within the hall (there is an image gallery in this area for visitors to enjoy). Aisles have been widened and a surprising 84 new exhibitors added to the 200-plus line-up. These include notable absences from last year Leica, Sony and Pentax (Ricoh Imaging). TimeInc (formerly IPC Media) and the Association of Photographers have become partners for 2015. The show sees the return of the Super Stage with a new lineup featuring Martin Parr, Mary Ellen Walker, Susan Meiselas, Tim Flach, Tom Stoddart, Michael Kenna, Simon Norfolk, Lynsey Addario and Don McCullin. Live demonstrations will see Fuji, Panasonic and Sony put some of their kit in the spotlight in intimate product spotlight sessions. A dynamic collective of women will be hosting a panel Women in Photography, discussing various themes around the subject. A great line-up of exhibitors including Nikon, Olympus, Manfrotto and Bowens will be hosting free talks on their stands completing this comprehensive programme of activities. The Photography Show is a great day out for keen enthusiast photographers, don’t miss out and book your
ticket today (if you are reading this in the electronic edition released before the show) via photographyshow.com and benefit from the pre-show ticket prices. On-the-door ticket prices apply after 17th March.
Live demonstrations and photo shoots pulled the crowds in 2014
Universal appeal For all visitors, pro or enthusiast, the programme is really packed with demos and education: On the Live Stage top photographers demonstrate how to tackle a diverse range of shoots, from unique challenging subjects to portrait, wedding and fashion. Streetscape is a brand new open stage on the show floor with graffiti in an ‘urban street setting’. Pro photographers talk visitors through how to get the best out of their street photography. IGPOTY Garden – as last year, there is a real garden on the show floor hosted by International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) for visitors keen to practise macro and plant photography. Behind the Lens – a seminar style theatre features professional photographers covering a diverse selection of genres and techniques. Lomography Konstruktor Workshops – popular in 2014, this is a workshop where visitors can build their own analogue
camera from scratch (additional ticket required, as you get to keep your finished camera). Lomography Diana F+ Workshop – a workshop where visitors can test out a range of lenses and the instant print capabilities of the very hip Diana F+ camera. Adobe Theatre will be where Photoshop and Lightroom experts talk visitors through the essential skills needed to successfully edit photos. For those entering the field of movies and especially the new world of 4K, there is a Filmmaker Theatre dedicated to film-making, giving visitors hints and tips on how to get the best out of the video function on their cameras. Mobileography will be an open area on the show floor designed to demonstrate the ability of smartphones to create great photos.
DIY Framing & Mounting Workshops – this was another very popular practical training workshop last year. You can learn how to mount and frame your own pictures, with tips and advice on hand from the UK School of Framing (additional ticket required) 30 Under 30 is an exciting competition that identifies 30 emerging photographers aged between 18 and 30 internationally, recognising and providing a platform for burgeoning photographic talent. A gallery area displays the winning projects. Don’t forget that if you’re a pro or interested in turning pro, you can meet MPA, BIPP, AoP, the RPS, The Societies and a host of magazine and book publishers dedicated to helping you – as well as training experts like Aspire and The Photographer Academy.

STAND C101
21-24 MARCH 2015 THE NEC, BIRMINGHAM
Create your very own ‘Kodak Moments’ Visit C101 to see how the Kodak Moments app simplifies the route from capture to print for tablets and mobiles
The Kodak Moments App whether used on tablet (above and left) or mobile (below) allows you to create printed products anywhere, then collect from your local store – or do it all in-store if you wish
U
ndoubtedly one of the biggest questions to match the fastest growing trend within the photo printing industry is how we encourage consumers to print photos from the millions that are captured everyday on smartphones and tablet. The answer is to be had in the Kodak Moments HD Tablet App and My Kodak Moments App for smartphone. Thanks to the introduction of consumer friendly features, it has been downloaded over 10 million times. Go to: kodakmomentsapp.com to do so yourself. The idea is that it allows you to create photo projects and products – everything from ordering a print to designing your own personal photo book – anywhere and everywhere – and then collect the end result from a local retail outlet of your choice. As photographers, the beauty is that you get both the creative options of desktop software combined with the ease of use of a mobile app. Back home on the sofa or even while still on holiday, it will quickly take you to your choice of photo and design template, thanks to its intuitive user interface and networking of
social media platforms including Facebook or Instagram. You can then send your finished print project to participating retailers for collection on the same day. Two technologies help make this possible. Smart Fit technology automatically adapts the size of the photo selected to the space that is available, without losing content or cropping it. And Kodak Perfect Touch enhancement technology improves the picture quality automatically. In addition to the photos stored in the camera or the device, the app also accesses the user’s photos – subject to the user’s consent – on Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, Dropbox or Apple’s iCloud. The app is now available to download from the Apple App
Store on iTunes, with a version for Android devices to follow. Planned updates include a broad range of photo products, including customised greeting cards, photo collages and calendars. “We’re being realistic here and not expecting every single image from a mobile phone to be printed, but if we can unlock a fraction of smartphone photographers to recognise these special Kodak Moments and encourage them to print, then that really is going to be a game changer for us and the industry too,” UK Marketing Manager Paul Davey tells us. “There have been reports suggesting people are putting too much faith in the Internet being ever-lasting in terms of storing our memories. The only
way to absolutely secure those images for the longer term is to print them, which is an essential message we need to put across. “But we actually managed to get ourselves ‘trending’ worldwide on Twitter, thanks to our work with Text Santa on ITV. In fact the results were pretty spectacular in terms of the numbers of people we were able to reach. ‘Kodak Moments’ is a widely recognised phrase, so by tapping into how this is used on digital channels such as Instagram we can increase engagement and interaction.” To download the app/s for mobile and tablet now or to get the Kodak Create@Home software for your PC, head to kodakmomentsapp.com and don’t forget to drop by stand C101 at the show!

here are several great reasons to seek out key distributor and inkjet media manufacturer Fotospeed at The Photography Show, namely:
T
he Photographic Alliance of Great Britain – or ‘PAGB’ for short – is a body that helps coordinate national events and services for almost 1,000 photographic clubs across the UK, via such clubs’ affiliation with one of 15 Regional Federations. Services include the bi-annual PAGB handbook, which lists all the volunteer lecturers and judges willing to visit clubs, plus very competitive and vitally important insurance for clubs and members. Added to this, inter-club challenges, awards and competitions all seek to appreciate the very best of UK amateur photography, with their Awards for Photographic Merit (CPAGB, DPAGB and MPAGB) held in the highest esteem. Clubs meet regularly, mostly weekly, and typically from September until April, though in fact some remain active and open all year round. The clubs’ objective is to encourage members to enjoy and improve their photography in the mutually supportive and motivating company of fellow enthusiasts. Many people have an old fashioned view of camera clubs as populated by men in cardigans endlessly discussing equipment. This kind of club is long gone.
Most are vibrant creative organisations with an equal gender mix and members from many different backgrounds. Photographs are discussed far more than cameras (or cardigans). The ethos of the Dumfries Camera Club, to give just one example, is typical of the majority, namely in seeking to extend a warm welcome to all levels of photographer, from beginner to international award winner. Competitions are run throughout the year and speakers, both national and local, visit the club to lecture and give presentations on various aspects of photography. You don’t even have to take photographs to attend an enthusiastic club where members with a wide range of abilities enjoy seeing each others’ pictures and benefiting from a shared knowledge of all things photographic. So if you are looking for inspiration, want to know which buttons to press on your camera or just want to join a friendly progressive photographic club, why not come along to stand H135 at The Photography Show to find out more. The following URL can also be visited for further info and to subscribe free to an e-newsletter: www.thepagb.org.uk

The new Fotospeed Signature range brings together five of the world’s leading photographers with four of Fotospeed’s most popular, award-winning fine art inkjet papers: Smooth Cotton 300, Natural Soft Textured Bright White 315, Platinum Baryta 300 and Platinum Etching 285. “ We are thrilled to be working with such a successful and diverse group of photographers. Each one has helped set the bar in their genre and it is a pleasure to see their work realised on our papers.” Toby Herlinger Sales Director at Fotospeed To launch this new partnership we will be running a photo competition with prizes over £5000 up for grabs. Joe Cornish – Smooth Cotton 300 I aim to crystallise the endlessly varied light, colours and texture of nature in my landscape photographs. At the end of a chain of photographic processes, the print is the culmination and fulfilment of that effort, and the paper is critical to the success of the print. Fotospeed’s Smooth Cotton 300 is my paper of choice.
Trevor & Faye Yerbury – Natural Soft Textured Bright White 315 As traditional darkroom printers it has taken us many years to discover the right paper for our digital images that will capture and hold all of the shadow and highlight detail we demand. Natural Soft Textured Bright White is our preferred paper.
John Swannell – Platinum Baryta 300 As a photographer I aim to capture the spirit of my subject. While technology has changed over the years the one thing I feel remains the same is the importance of the printed image. Fotospeed’s Platinum Baryta bridges the gap between the traditional darkroom papers and todays digital media. I find that whilst it is known for reproducing superb B&W images it should never be under estimated as a paper for colour work.
Charlie Waite – Platinum Etching 285 Landscape photography is much about discovery and photographers can only fully relish the rewards of their efforts when seen in the form of a print. The paper used for that print has to be as carefully considered as the image made. Discovering Fotospeed’s Platinum Etching 285 has been a revelation to me and has proved a vital tool in my ongoing quest to match pre-visualisation with end result.

This is a limited show offer, while stocks last – so head over there now to secure a great deal. Plus, to celebrate Canson’s 150 years in the photo business – in fact, it is the last photographic paper manufacturing pioneer still standing – there are prize draws being held every day of the show to win Canson papers, archival photo storage boxes designed to preserve your prints over time, plus signed prints from brand ambassadors. Photographer Bryan Hopper will be appearing on stand G41 with fellow professional John Miskelly, to answer your
Discover why there’s never been a better time to sample Canson papers on stand G41 questions, share tips, divulge tricks and generally give advice on why they both choose and use Canson papers. So come over to say hello and enjoy what’s being described as a stellar printing performance. Another draw is that when you do pay a visit, you’ll find a display that less resembles a stand and more closely that of a gallery, thanks to 20 works of art on show – printed on Canson papers naturally – for you to peruse. As we’ve indicated there are some great show offers to be had at the Canson stand as well as expert advice from its brand ambassadors and the team on achieving perfect prints. With Fine Art and Photo papers and canvasses offered in the Canson Infinity series and limited deals to be had, don’t dawdle… dash over to location G41 now. www.cansoninfinity.com
Canson Fine Art (above) and Fine Art Photo Discovery packs – with 10 or 11 full A4 sample sheets of premium papers in each one – can be picked up on the stand for only £5. That’s saving £12.78 per pack on retail prices! Editor’s tip – buy five of each pack and you’ll get four sheets of each of 21 different premium papers to test and create fine prints with.

huge selection of second hand items to buy and an exhibition of stunning images captured by its members are just two essential reasons to visit the Disabled Photographers’ Society stand H51 at The Photography Show. Founded in 1968, the Disabled Photographers’ Society is a registered national charity that promotes photography for people with disabilities, their carers, disabled groups, or anyone with an interest in helping the disabled. So if you have a disability and want to enjoy photography, the Society is here to help, advise and encourage you to overcome any difficulties you have to enable you to take great photographs. It has extensive experience in adapting or making equipment to help even those with severe disabilities operate their camera. Many members produce work on a par with (or better than) able-bodied club members and professional photographers, according to Chairman Tom Molloy. Even if you are able bodied you can still get involved with the Society by generously donating unwanted photographic equipment. If you’ve upgraded your
kit, don’t leave old gear stuck in the back of the wardrobe; donate it at the show. Just about anything photographic that is in working order is welcomed - from a roll of film or your old instruction book, through to a complete darkroom or your old camera outfit – good use can be made of it all. Unlike some charities, the Society does not employ staff and exists purely on the hard work of volunteers, so every penny raised goes directly to help the continuation of its work, allowing its members to benefit from the therapeutic effect that photography provides. So if you’re reading this online before the event please take note that any donation, large or small, is gratefully accepted on Stand H51. But even if you do not have any suitable donations, do still visit the stand to peruse the many second hand items for sale, including a huge selection of used cameras, books, bags and cases. There will also be a diverse selection of members’ photography to admire. If you have items to donate but are not able to bring them to the show then please email Chairman Tom Molloy: chairman@disabledphotographers.co.uk with thanks in advance.
