s we went to press this month the big names had begun rolling out their summer deals. We’ve debated the merits of seasonal cashbacks in BPI News before. Do customers hold off buying kit because they know full well a cashback is around the corner and don’t want to jump the gun on making a modest saving, or does that self-same discount truly prompt a purchase that might not otherwise have been made? Whilst the consensus amongst photo specialists we spoke to last time was that manufacturers could still do more, cashbacks were generally appreciated and welcomed at retail. Aside from tempting customers into stores via a financial carrot, the accompanying ads and promotional literature all serve to push not only individual brands but also photography as a whole. So, arguably, and to take the positive view, everyone in the industry stands to benefit one way or another from additional awareness and exposure. Talk of awareness and exposure brings us back around to BPI News itself, your long-serving industry mouthpiece via which the current team set out three years ago with the aim of building bridges of communication between the different sectors of the photography trade – manufacturers and retailers, suppliers and minilabs. Print is still an effective, tangible means of getting your message out there – plus of course we have the e-version hosted online each month at bpinews.co.uk, where your trade customers and yourselves will also find back issues. It’s all about making the best use of the resources available to you to attract new business and custom, or – as we’ve heard from regular advertisers NationalaTrust POS via which and those profiled in our numerous advertorials Lumix – provide means to re-engage with Complimentary and welcome back existing or old customers. 12 month national trust membership with the lumiX FZ200 or FZ72 Description • Complimentary National Whatever avenues of commerce and self-promotion are open to you, we Trust Membership 2 month national trust trust the forecast suggests a busy and profitable summer.Campaign POS

Canon marks 10th anniversary of 5D launch THE PHOTO GIANT is flagging up the fact that its ever popular EOS 5D series of cameras is, incredibly, celebrating a decade in existence this year, the original full frame 5D (above left) having been launched back in September 2005. At the time it was the first enthusiast level DSLR to incorporate the larger chip, for what the company suggests was a ‘competitive price’. The Mark II version followed in November 2008, notable for having introduced Full HD video capture, inspiring the widespread adoption of DSLRs as movie making tools. The obvious advantage Canon had here was direct compatibility with 64 EF lenses. In March 2012 the EOS Mark III was to supersede it, which came with ‘significant improvements’ according to its manufacturer. These included enhanced AF precision and a faster continuous shooting rate. As BPI readers will be well aware, the latest iteration of the 5D was launched in February of this year in the shape of not one but two new cameras: the EOS 5DS (above right) and 5DS R with their whopping 50.6 megapixel resolution, again from a full frame chip. Canon promises it will “continue to strengthen [its] DSLR line up”. www.canon.co.uk

THERE’S no Photokina this year. But if you still want to get the heads up on global market trends and fancy heading to Germany on business nonetheless, you might want to set your sights on making preparations for September’s world leading annual IFA consumer electronics show. This year it takes place at the Berlin Messe from the 4th until the 9th of September, and one of the main focuses includes UHD quality displays. A rapidly increasing number of up-market SLR and compact travel cameras are already UHD-capable, and on some action cams videos can even be shot in a super-fine grid. This year the tradition UHD camcorders are so compact that they can easily fit in hand baggage. Of particular interest: new, highly effective optical picture stabilizers help to make most of the quality potential of UHD. To find out more about potential trends at the show and further specifics, head to the below URL. www.ifa-berlin.de/en

OLYMPUS has announced an innovative, free new opportunity for photographers to ‘test and wow’ their award winning cameras and lenses. They can chose from the OM-D or PEN series including the new OM-D E-M5 Mark II, in combination with one or more high-performance M.ZUIKO lenses. The Olympus’ ‘Test & Wow’ program is free and lets photographers trial their interchangeable-lens system cameras* – for three days, in their own time, away from the retailer with no strings attached. It is the perfect way for photographers to use and handle the Olympus interchangeable-lens system and find the perfect fit for their photographic needs. Reserving a test camera and lens is simple. Photographers can browse through the cameras and lenses available online at: wow.olympus.eu/GB_en Then they simply register their preferred trial product(s), the date for the loan and their nearest Olympus retailer. Their Test and Wow package will be ready to collect when they arrive in the store**. The test period lasts three working days, including the pick-up and return day, which guarantees at least one full day of testing before it’s time to return their camera on test. If it is more convenient, photographers can also arrange the test directly at the retailers. * Subject to availability. The website checks availability prior to reservation. ** Participating dealers may request a refundable deposit. For information about the Olympus range please visit www.olympus.co.uk/cameras For more information about Test and Wow please visit www.wow.olympus.eu/GB_en

As part of the sponsorship, Sony is holding a series of seminars with local independent retailers to enable customers to find out more about Sony’s range of cameras including the A7 series and premium RX100 compacts. “Sony is delighted to be working the PAGB – through our work with the Sony World Photography Awards and our recent announcement about our Imaging Ambassador programme, we’re committed to supporting photographers up and down the country and at all levels,” says BPI News regular and DI Category Head Frederik Lange (above). “Sony provides photographers with a variety of different kit options from the revolutionary full frame A7 series to the portable detail of the RX. AS PART of its on-going business support offered to all Kodak Express member stores, Tetenal has introduced a (June 21st) Father’s Day promotional pack including posters, in store POS, window vinyls, balloons and more to help ram the message home to your customers. A prize draw is also involved, with a gas BBQ up for grabs for dad. “This is a great way to encourage customers to come into the store and to make a minimal spend to take part in the prize draw,” suggests Tetenal’s Kodak Express Business Manager Mike Piggin. “We feel it’s important to run value-added promotions and to make customers feel like they have a chance to win a personal prize. Many other store chains just run money off products or come back and spend again promotions. These have their place but consumers love to feel they have a chance to win something for themselves and the promotion is not just to make more money for the store.” www.tetenaluk.com Tetenal’s in-house marketing team member Hayley Bayliss recently took part in the charitable Pretty Muddy Race for Life, held on May 17th, which aims to raise funds for Cancer Research. The Pink Ladies team on the 5K run raised over £750 for the charity whilst donations can still be made via www.justgiving.com/pinkladiesgetmuddy

romising June availability, the camera brand has announced the premium-feel X-T10, another new interchangeable lens model in its popular retro-styled ‘X’ series, along with a compatible prime lens in the Fujinon XF90mm. To please your enthusiast photographer customers the new camera comes with a 2.36 million dot resolution electronic real time viewfinder and an APS-C ‘X-Trans’ CMOS sensor. Fuji also claims the X-T10, which features die-cast magnesium top and base plates complete with three ‘precision milled’ aluminium dials, uses a new AF system. This comprises Fujifilm’s conventional 49-point AF mode for high speed and precision focusing, as well as new Zone and Wide/Tracking modes that track subject movement across a larger 77-point area, substantially improving the camera’s ability to capture moving subjects. Another key point to pitch to punters is an 8fps continuous shooting speed, while the back panel features a 3-inch, 920K dot resolution tilting monitor, a pop up flash is hidden in the top plate, and ISO settings stretch to ISO51200. Two colour options are available for those purchasing the X-T10 – black or silver. The camera comes as body only for £499 SRP, or with XC16-50mm lens for £599 all-in. BPI NEWS EXTRA

Epson & Calumet push print advantage Inkjet printing specialist Epson has teamed up with the retailer to introduce a dedicated ‘Print and Pay’ station area at the latter’s flagship store, offering high-end output to London customers on the spot at Drummond Street.

A

s a printer brand that is more often than not the ‘go to’ one for both enthusiastic amateur and professional photographers, the news that Epson has partnered with Calumet to introduce a raft of high quality print options at Calumet’s flagship store in London’s Drummond Street is not a total surprise. The idea here is that customers can print their images using the latest Epson technology and talk to the experts about the benefits of using Epson printers and media. Epson says that customers including professional photographers, artists wanting to print limited edition prints, or in fact anybody wanting to print an image can take advantage of the new dedicated area within the store. Large format prints from A3+/13-inches through to A1/24-inches can be printed on a choice of media including Epson Traditional Photo Paper. Alternatively photographer customers can scan their original image to print using the latest Epson Perfection V850 Pro high-quality scanner.

A cost effective solution to high quality print & profit Epson tells BPI News that the Calumet store staff have been trained on the latest Epson equipment including the new SureColor SC-P600 A3+ printer and the SureLab D700 printer (one of the subjects of our four page pull-out advertorial in our March 2015 issue), and are on hand to help customers make the right printer choice. As we noted back in March, copy

shops and photo retailers looking for a cost effective solution to expand their offerings should investigate the Epson SureLab (or ‘SL’) D700 further. It provides the ability to deliver services above and beyond the norm, including square sized prints, cards, calendars and panoramic prints up to 21x100cm. Print finishes include lustre, gloss and matt, with the device delivering natural skin tone reproduction and dynamic range for highlight and shadow details, plus deep blacks via six colour UltraChrome D6-5 inks. Further selling points of the D700 that might appeal are that it is easy to transport and retailers can enjoy a low cost outlay per print. Up to 360 15cmx10cm prints can be produced per hour and, with Windows and Mac drivers provided, the device is easy to integrate into most workflow systems. Variable print lengths stretch from 8.9cm to 100cm and print widths are from 10cm to 21cm. Calumet’s ‘Print and Pay’ area was launched with two successive open days shortly before we went to press. “This partnership allows our customers to not only print their images to the very highest quality but also to experience and engage with the latest cutting-edge product developments from Epson in a friendly and knowledgeable environment,” suggests Calumet Product Manager Andy Johnson. “Thanks to Epson, we look forward to assisting customers in exceeding their vision.” The theme of the Epson ‘Print and Pay’ Station was taken from the architecture surrounding the

BPI NEWS PRODUCT FOCUS

‘Using the Neo is like having The Force’

W

e originally ran a page on Rotolight’s revolutionarily powerful yet lightweight Neo photo and video light, developed at the UK’s famous Pinewood Studios, back in March’s BPI News. Just last month however BPI News was granted an exclusive opportunity to join portrait photographer and Rotolight brand ambassador Jason Lanier on a shoot in London – to witness the LED product being used professionally. By contrast, the group portrait shot on this page was also taken with yours truly using it, thereby suggesting anyone can achieve great results! This is one product that you really do need a demonstration of to fully appreciate. “Using the Neo is like having The Force,” laughs California-based Jason, referencing the mysterious power afforded Jedi knights in Star Wars movies – and the possible real-world status of the Neo as a ‘secret weapon’ for photographers. He tells us that Rotolight completely sold out of its available stock to attendees of a workshop he’d given the previous day at Pinewood. As we noted in March, the Neo’s output is double that of rivals at 1077 lux at three feet (or 707 watts tungsten bulb equivalent). The other unique selling point here is that the Neo is the first on–camera lighting solution with an accurate colour temperature display – shown on the back of the unit – thereby enabling swift, ‘tune-able’ colour on location. In a word it’s versatile and affordable too at £249 SRP. “Good competitive margins are available to trade partners,” adds Rotolight’s Marketing and PR Manager Alex H-French. Users can opt to purchase a 10-piece location filter pack that

With good, competitive margins offered to retail partners, Rotolight’s latest on-camera lighting accessory in the LED ‘Neo’ could revolutionise the way photographers work. BPI News attends a workshop to discover more for the trade…

Colour filter gels let you create mixed light effects

boasts diffusion, skin tone and ‘creative’ effects filters, whilst a multi light kit is also available for photographers who might want to position lights both in front of and behind subjects, or set up a circle of Neo’s around a dance floor to capture the first dance at a wedding, for example. Unlike the tungsten equivalent, in being a LED light source they don’t get hot in use. It’s ideal as a key light, for providing that attractive catch-light effect in a subject’s eyes, for delivering extra kick or where a nice fill is needed. “It’s incredible how even the lighting is from the Neo,” chips in photographer Jason, who

has been shooting with the LED since last November, even though units only started shipping mid May. “And that’s with it on a light stand. If I want the light to fall off more, then I just hold it up with the handgrip (an optional accessory) attached. “

Professional input, powerful output Rotolight MD Rod Aaron Gammons reveals that the company gave Jason and a number of photographers and cinematographers preproduction units so that they could get their feedback. “And some of that feedback had made it into the production models,” he enthuses. “Things like the colour filters were based on feedback, along with the cinematic special effects. Stefan Lange who shot Batman and Skyfall said he’d love it if we could add those to the product. Some of Jason’s ideas about filter choices and also being able to use rechargeable batteries made it into the product.” The photographer, who has been shooting professionally for 8 years, adds that the advantages this gives him are “Exponential. Not having to worry about where the flash goes, for one. I use flash a lot and am pretty good at controlling it but sometimes flash is like a wild animal – you don’t know where it is going to go, so being able to utilise the Neo is tremendous. “The other advantage is the softness of the light. You put a filter on and it’s skin softening galore – but it’s not that artificial plastic skin softening that we all hate. If you only photograph people you can just keep the skin softening diffuser on there, which is really going to cut down on your editing. Then there’s

the fact of being able to use the Neo in so many conditions and they’re so much lighter than normal Nikon or Sony flashguns. “I shoot a lot of weddings and if I’m shooting the first dance I’ll put these Neo’s up in a circular fashion. And it will make your clients look like movie stars. They will come up to me and say, ‘Oh my gosh, you made me look amazing – how much did you have to pay for all this stuff?’ But I will also put one right on the camera’s hotshoe. If you’re using flash and a wedding guest is coming straight at your camera, that potentially magical moment can end up blown out and there’s no re-creating that. And when I put the Neo right on top of my camera it turns into a club atmosphere, and guests start mugging for the camera. They’ll be going nuts just because they know the light is on them – like moths to a flame. “I hope you understand though that these are revolutionary for me – and I use a lot of different kinds of continuous lights. I’m an ‘Artisan of Imagery’ for Sony and I’ve used the Sony lights but they’re very top heavy and I’ve broken the foot off them so many times. With the Neo the weight is spread out. “The Neo also enables me to get the shots and results that I want faster. A lot of us have circumstances where we don’t have time and have to get in and out quick: particularly if I’m shooting in some crazy urban environments. I can shoot holding

the Neo in my hand. No wonder these comprise 70% of what I do. There are a lot of uses for these, from adding catch lights to the eyes when you’re shooting against the sun, to macro photography.” Asked to give three reasons why your customers should buy a Neo, Jason Lanier responds: “Firstly the power on these things is tremendous – that’s going to be the number one takeaway – and being able to adjust the power output too, with the roundness of the design giving you that beautiful catchlight and the throw. The ability to change the white balance is huge too – I can put the model in Antarctica, the California sun or somewhere in between. “Thirdly there are a lot of photography products that are junk, but these are high quality and I’ve dropped them enough times to know. These things are handmade here in the UK and I could not be more impressed with the quality. It even handles the elements; the only thing I would add to these is the ability to sync with your phone, so your handset can act as a remote – but that’s more of a dream than a gripe.” The Neo and other Rotolight products – including the larger, more heavy-duty Anova – are available to independent photographic specialists via Digital Distribution (www.ddltd.co.uk). “This is the ideal promotion for those looking to move away from their smartphone this summer, and explore the endless possibilities that DSLR photography has to offer…” Edward Allinson, Junior Product Manager for Lenses and Accessories

New Nikon ambassadors to spread the word EDWARD ALLINSON isn’t the only new face to promote the Nikon brand. In further news this month, it has appointed three new photographer ‘ambassadors’ to complete this year’s line-up above: news photographer Leon Neal (top), natural landscape and wildlife photographer David Yarrow (centre) plus location, architecture and people photographer Jeremy Walker (bottom). The brief is that the ambassadors work with Nikon on a range of activities, from seminars at key events (such as The Photography Show) to social media and PR campaigns. “Since the launch of the Ambassador scheme in 2013 we have seen some amazing talent in our line-up,” enthuses Nikon UK Group Marketing Manager Jeremy Gilbert. “Through the ambassadors we are able to engage with our customers, and, most importantly, inspire enthusiasts to take a step up with their photography.” He adds: “The scheme has allowed us to formally acknowledge some of the country’s leading photographers in their fields and collaborate with them creatively to communicate the ‘I am Different’ message.” The new faces join current Nikon ambassadors Kate Hopewell-Smith, the lifestyle photographer with a love of portraiture, and Bob Martin, the multiaward winning sports photographer who specialises in shooting action and editorial pictures. Nikon’s prestigious Ambassador Alumni includes industry-leading photographers Ross Hoddinott – wildlife and landscape photo expert – Kirsty Mitchell – fine art photographer who recently completed her breath taking Wonderland collection, John Wright – commercial photographer specialising in fashion and celebrity – Mark Seymour – multi award-winning wedding photographer – plus Mark Pain, a renowned sports photographer with over 25 years’ experience and multiple awards working for both corporate and editorial clients. www.nikon.co.uk/nikonambassadors

NEDIS 4-PAGE PULL-OUT PROMOTION SPECIAL

‘Demo these products and they will sell…’

S

ometimes the adage that ‘you have to see it to believe it’ rings especially true, particularly when it comes to the new, innovative technology that our trade seeks to sell day in, day out. “We sell IP cameras that link to the Internet and offer home security… and we’ve presented them to the photo dealers and electrical stores,” Nedis UK’s National Sales Manager Alastair Wilson tells us. “But we’ve found that they stick like glue to the shelves unless the retailers actually demonstrate them to customers.” If you do show people what they are capable of, then the reaction is ‘wow that’s amazing’ and then you can sell them, he adds. “The same thing is true of dash cams. Rather than have a pile of boxes stacked up on a table at the recent Castle Cameras show, I shot a video on one bolted in my car, stuck it on a computer, connected it to a 32-inch HD TV and we ran the video. Everybody that walked past the stand asked: ‘what was that taken on? That’s amazing!’ And then once they were told the price they bought one.” In other words, by taking the time to demonstrate the product it sells itself. “Brian Callow and Racheal Tattum, who run the Castle Cameras show, agreed to buy in 16 pieces and we sold the whole lot. OK, it’s not your average DSLR camera user who would generally buy in-car cameras, but rather ‘Joe Soap’ who sees the benefit. Perhaps at some point in his life he’s had a road accident or close shave and can appreciate the need to have one of these things to record his journeys. Another guy said to me that he had just changed insurance companies and the first thing that they said to him was ‘are you using a dash cam?’” Apart from setting up a big screen to demo and market such Nedis products, another obvious way to market it is to record a video, stick it on YouTube and link it back to your own online retail site. Practicing what he preaches, at the time of writing Alastair was due to post his own incar video online. Contact Nedis and they will give you the link for your own retail usage. Wildlife Camera

Wildlife camera

A

s we featured back in the March 2015 issue of BPI News, Nedis UK also offers a series of König ‘Wildlife’ cameras in camouflage attire, of which there are two new additions – both shown in our panels to the right. “These are equipped with Infrared to sit in the garden and film wildlife,” notes Alastair Wilson. “The DVRODR20 is the standard model while the premium version is the DVRODR30, which has got a mobile phone facility built in. It records pictures and sends them via MMS to your mobile phone. I don’t know if there is anything around like that. You could alternatively use it as a security camera. If anything moves in the vicinity it is viewing, it starts taking pictures and streams them to your mobile device as it is happening.” In fact Alastair said there’s a great story from Melgray of Hereford (www.melgray.co.uk, above right). “They sold out of their entire first shipment of the König wildlife cameras to local farmers as remote surveillance to protect against sheep disappearing in the middle of the night.” A bit of a woolly story – but true! So don’t be ‘sheepish’ – drop Alastair and his team a line to rustle up some stock to put in your own retail ‘paddock’. It’s all about thinking outside of the proverbial box and stocking equipment that can sell well alongside your compact system cameras, DSLRs, and accessories – like: König’s Traveller tripod, right, which scored maximum 5 star ratings in all categories to win the Digital Photo Magazine Gold Award for best tripod under £60… another line highly recommended to stock and sell in the peak pre-holiday season.

Sell smarter with smartphone photo accessories 5

Also new from Nedis and making for an easy and profitable sale are Camlink phone lenses, for which there is either a single or a dual kit which fit on the back of a smartphone and give you an ultra wide angle and a fisheye effect. Cost to the dealer is £4.99 and they sell at £12.99 for the pair or £5.99 if your customers buy them individually. Alastair adds that they can be used on iPads, iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones and a whole host of competing tablets. “They come with a little adapter clip that holds the lens in place. Your standard phone is probably giving you a 50mm equivalent view in 35mm terms. But by using one of these you convert it to a 28mm, while the fisheye one obviously gives you that goldfish bowl type effect. We’ve just started to market them to the photo trade, who need to wise up that this is an optical 7 so they are very capable of selling it. In fact they’re probably accessory and better at talking to the customers and demonstrating it than a phone specialist; all they need to do in my opinion is print out a couple of shots to show to customers and stick those on the counter somewhere. £12.99 is pocket money to most people.”

As another example of Nedis UK practicing what it preaches, Alastair lets slip that MD Arvind Patel has been personally road testing one of its new smart watch gadgets – again, available for considerably less than an Apple watch. “These give you a status of your health and while it doesn’t do all of what an iWatch does, it gives you the time, the date and how many steps you walk per day and how many calories those steps are burning from your system. What you do is download the app to your mobile phone and this Bluetooth device transmits to your mobile phone and the data tells you whether your body weight is correct and whether you’re taking enough exercise. We also do a set of scales that are Bluetooth connected, which adds to the system and gives you advice on what to do to sharpen up your health. Dealers could sell it as a package.” As usual it appears that distributor Nedis UK has plenty of ideas and moreover the products with which to make those ideas count for photo specialists who are looking to expand their product offerings with complementary kit. Summer cashback + 50mm lens + binos = App-y Canon customers

T

he photo giant is encouraging your customers to invest in a new camera for summer shooting via its latest cashback drive (right), with up to £50 offered on purchases of selected products. The scheme, launched on May 20th, runs until the 19th August this year and includes 28 products in total, ranging from DSLRs, through lenses and Speedlites to compact cameras, camcorders and photo printers. For example there is £50 cashback offered on purchase of an EOS M3 and 18-55mm lens, or EOS 700D digital SLR. Alternatively your customers can grab £30 or £20 back, respectively, on the EOS 100D and 1200D. The same savings can be made across PowerShot SX530, SX710, SX610 and IXUS 275 compacts, while video cameras falling under the offer are the Legria HF R606, R66, R67, R68 and G25. To see the entire range included in the offer and T&C’s, direct your customers to visit www.canon.co.uk/summercashback

New lens & binoculars promise plenty of pop A new EF 50mm f/1.8 STM (right) prime lens is being pitched at photographers seeking ‘popping portraits with beautiful background blur’, due to the fast/bright aperture provided and resulting shallow depth of field. The new optic succeeds the EF 50mm f/1.8 II, and the pitch you should use is that this an ideal second lens for anyone looking to take their photography to the next level with that f/1.8 maximum aperture providing precise control over depth of field. Canon suggests that when paired with an APS-C EOS DSLR, the lens is ideal for head and shoulder compositions. But it’s also a useful every day ‘standard’ lens for full frame DSLRs for a diverse range of subjects with a natural viewpoint and perspective. Available now, SRP is £129.99. Other new products this month, which are perfect for stimulating summer sales, include a ‘refresh’ of Canon’s binocular range. The AA battery-powered 12x36 IS III

The biggest camera brand in the business launches its seasonal sales push, along with a new DSLR lens, a pair of binoculars and software apps of all descriptions…

and 10x30 IS II offer 12x and 10x magnification and weights of 660g and 600g respectively. They also feature what their maker describes as ‘innovative’ active image stabiliser technology, activated with a button press. Additionally, the Super Spectra lens coating, also found in Canon’s EF lens range, claims to deliver vivid colour and detail, enabling your ‘twitcher’ customers to easily distinguish one breed of bird from another, in addition to suppressing visible flare and ghosting. Both sets of binoculars are available from August. SRP is £699.99 for the 12x36 (below) and £479.99 for the 10x30.

Seeking App-y customers Finally, the photo giant has released an English language version of a new iOS software app designed to let your customers ‘have fun with their photos’. Originally launched in Japan last November, where it went to the top spot in the free Photo & Video category of the Japan App Store, Perstext lets your customers insert dynamic text into saved images, which can then be shared with friends and family via popular social networks, or a printed copy. Canon believes that by enabling the simple creation of images that convey messages with a touch of flare, the application offers new methods of expression and communication. For use on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, Canon’s Perstext app is available for download from the Apple App Store. Canon has also released a series of downloadable and app-based city guides as part of its continuing Come and See brand promotion. The guides currently focus on London, Paris, Madrid, Milan and Amsterdam. “We hope that people will relish the opportunity to seek out new perspectives and capture that beauty on camera or video to cherish forever”, says Nigel Taylor, Consumer Imaging Marketing Communications Director, Canon Europe. www.canon.co.uk

Camera Bag Essentials

Future’s Head of Content & Marketing Matt Pierce tells us why its new compact handbook is perfect for selling alongside Even if you don’t sell Inkjet papers, you should sell this one camera bags…

W

hy, we hear you ask? Because many mobile phones and cameras now offer panoramic shooting modes… but how does the consumer get to have a print of that special holiday landscape vista shot, demanding to be proudly hung in the hallway? Fotospeed’s Panoramic Paper starter pack with an SRP of £29.95 (subject to your normal trade discounts) is a great incentive to get yourself and your staff up to (Foto)speed on the benefits and spin off sales. Firstly your customers who are already buying their favourite A4 inkjet papers can now print 210mm x 594mm panoramic images with a near 3:1 ratio on their normal A4 size printer. So there is no need to buy an expensive roll of paper just to print their favourite panoramic shot.

Secondly because the Test pack has 4 sheets of 6 different Fotospeed papers (including their latest Platinum Baryta 300, Platinum Etching 285 and Smooth Cotton 300 paper from the new Signature range) it’s an inexpensive way to try out the different surfaces of paper, which can all make or break that great shot. Thirdly...and this is the clever idea: Offer your customers a one-off panoramic print service. Simply buy the paper at trade prices, print it on your premises, and make a healthy margin on each print. There are extra sheets included for profiling, plus a full template guide and free technical advice – all of which have made Fotospeed’s Panoramic Paper Starter pack a top seller! “This pack absolutely flew at The Photography Show and helped us turn many more photographers and retailers on to Fotospeed’s leading proposition,” says the brand’s Toby Herlinger (photo, top). After receiving a Maximum 5 star rating in Amateur Photographer magazine last year, the Panoramic Starter pack has additionally just been given the thumbs up for professional users from Mike McNamee’s Professional Imagemaker report in the April /May issue – ‘Using the Fotospeed Panoramic paper trial box is an excellent idea for a beginner and if you have a commercial project in mind a single print sale will recoup all your costs with lots to spare’. uture, responsible for The Photography Show and the UK’s market-leading photography magazine, Digital Camera, has launched a new compact ‘bookazine’ designed for photographers’ camera bags. Camera Bag Essentials is the first in a series of compactsized handbooks for photographers to take with them on shoots. Although small enough to put in a camera bag, pagination is high, with the debut issue featuring 200 pages of practical advice and inspiration for just £9.99. With a ‘go anywhere, shoot anything’ tag line, Camera Bag Essentials is being pitched as the reference guide than no photographer would leave home without. Over five chapters, the editorial teams behind Digital Camera, N-Photo and PhotoPlus explain key camera techniques and concepts in quick, easy-tofollow guides. Readers will learn how to take better pictures by understanding how their camera works, discover the essential equipment they need to take stunning photos, and follow step-by-step guides to capture perfect photos. It’s the latest in a long line of successful bookazines from Future’s photography group – a term used to describe the high paginated, high production value titles that blur the lines between books and magazines. Future’s market-leading Canon and Nikon bookazines have had their three volumes reprinted several times, while their hugely successful ‘Teach Yourself’ series has covered Lightroom, Photoshop, Elements, as well as Black & White, Raw, Landscape and Sports and Action Photography. Future are planning more volumes in the Camera Bag Essentials series - with future editions focusing on different kinds of photography and including expert advice from leading pros. For readers, Camera Bag Essentials is the indispensable guide to photography that they can fit in their camera bag. For retailers, it’s a unique opportunity to offer a premium title that complements any kit purchase – but particularly camera bags. Camera Bag Essentials volume 1 is on sale now. For more information and commercial opportunities, get in touch with Matthew Pierce via matthew.pierce@futurenet.com or 01225 442244.

A

Y

es we know the DSLR-styled G7 has just been launched – this is the more compact, coat pocket sized (or perhaps, given the approaching summer, baggy shorts friendly) GF7 model announced before it. Pitched at those who want better results that their smartphone will allow, the GF7 compact continues the drive by Panasonic and rivals to offer serious oomph to your customers from palm-sized proportions. As regular DSLR sales slide, CSC appears to have been hit less hard depending on who you speak to, while at the same time the latter is narrowing the gap between these two camera strands in terms of output performance. We managed to achieve plenty of detail in the images we took. Incorporating a 17.3x13mm Four Thirds sensor and coming supplied with a manually retractable (and manually extendible) 12-32mm lens, the 16MP GF7 is not as much of a game changer as last summer’s Panasonic GH4: there’s no 4K shooting option here, for example, nor eye-level viewfinder. Instead we’re totally reliant on the fact that its maker has bowed to the ‘selfie’ craze by including a 180° tilting touch-screen display. Smartphones can also be used as a remote control, if your customers download the relevant app. But this newer, more consumer orientated system camera nevertheless borrows some of its bigger brother’s styling, as well as the same Four Thirds sensor and Venus engine as the numerically similar GX7 model. Of greater interest to enthusiasts is the lightning quick auto focus response, in conjunction with supplied 12-32mm lens (24-64mm in 35mm terms) and the 240fps AF drive. OK, so while die-hards will gripe that we’re still not seeing a larger APS-C chip or full frame sensor in a Panasonic camera, billboard sized prints aren’t the intended use for this model. Plus with its spreadsheets putting the manufacturer in pole position for UK CSC sales, it obviously doesn’t feel pressurised to alter course. With the GF7 it feels like Panasonic is making even its entry point devices serious contenders for photographers favouring a smaller form factor who at the same time don’t want to compromise much on picture quality. www.panasonic.co.uk

s introduced in our April issue of BPI News, there is a new flagship photo printer available from dye sublimation specialists DNP: the DS620. Stock is available as you read this. Key features include: two year warranty with a maximum of 100,000 prints, ink ribbon rewind function to cut waste, standby mode to conserve power, plus the world’s most compact design in its class (just 275mm in width), thereby also conserving space in-store or in studio. An added pitch, according to DNP, is a ‘great low media price regardless of the photo format’. No matter which print quality or print surface is chosen, the printer’s new intelligent algorithm rewinds the ink ribbon in the case of an odd number of 10x15cm photos being printed, so the remaining piece will be used for the next print job. DNP says that this is 100% usage of the media without any losses. On top of this a new standby mode helps the DS620 make the most efficient use of energy, keeping electricity bills low – and therefore increasing your profit. The manufacturer claims power consumption is reduced by up to 98% when in standby mode compared to the previous DS40 printer. In addition, the D620 is 14% lighter, 14% more compact and has a 14% higher image throughput per hour (standard 10x15cm prints are produced in just 8.4 seconds). DNP also claims an improved gloss level in pictures, leading to a more vibrant look your customers will love. In terms of available output, the printer offers 5x15cm photo strip prints right up to prints 15x20cm in size. There is also a new 15x15cm square photo format for Instagram fans. As expected, the dependable DS620 is compatible with DNP’s software solutions. These comprise the Party Print ‘app’, Tomo™ v6.1 kiosk software, Nexlab™ 6.6.2 order management software and Hot Folder Print software for enhanced in-studio workflow. Drivers are available for both Windows and Mac devices. Popular prints sizes up to 15 x 20cm maximise sales UK minilabs or retailers eager to add the DS620 to their existing set up, should contact DNP Photo Imaging Europe directly NOW via sales@dnpphoto.eu www.dnpphoto.eu

BPI NEWS EXTRA

S

igma has joined the ranks of those blazing a trail into summer with its own double whammy of scorching cashback offers. It currently has two up for your customers to grab – both of which come with the lure of £50 claimable upon purchase. Until June 30th this deal is running on its 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM zoom – and from June 1st until July 31st also on its 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM lens. Naturally to help dealers out with their new £50 cashback on their 1020mm f/3.5 lens, Sigma is supplying flyers and posters by way of point of sale material to stick in the window and display at the counter. “You should have received these by the time you’re reading this issue of BPI News,” promises Sigma UK General Manager Graham Armitage. The 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM lens – for which the offer ends at the close of this month – is described as a versatile lens designed exclusively for digital SLRs and suitable for all types of photography, in covering everything from wide angle to telephoto shooting. Minimum focusing distance is 35cm, whilst Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) construction means the lens’ structure is less likely to alter in varying temperatures, thus allowing the tolerances to be more precise. “Besides the fact that it won’t talk back to you, the wide ranging nature of the possible applications for this lens means that it’s the perfect partner for your customers to take on that summer holiday,” adds Graham.

Sigma lenses focus on cashbacks The third party lens manufacturer is running summer cashbacks on its 10-20mm and 18250mm zooms – at least until the end of the month – while pricing and availability has just been released for the dp0 Quattro camera Your Sigma UK sales contacts Andrew Morris, National Sales Manager (Greater London, the Home Counties and South of England) Tel: 0208 449 7737 Fax: 0208 449 6461 Mobile: 07860 494 128 Email: amorris30@btconnect.com

Flyers and advertising will promote the two £50 cashback deals on lenses, above. The super-wide dp0 Quattro is its own advertisement – unique!

Wide winner By contrast with the telephoto lens option, the DSLR owner pitched 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM is an ultra wide angle zoom with a constant aperture of f/3.5 – its angle of view providing your photographer customers with a striking angle of view with exaggerated perspective. The HSM – Hyper Sonic Motor – is claimed to ensure fast and quiet autofocus, whilst also allowing for full time manual focus override if required. “This lens is great for landscapes and cityscapes, so, while our £50 cashback offer is on, why not tempt customers to save themselves £100 and plump for both to take on their travels this summer?” Suggests Graham.

Sigma’s newest Quattro gets price & availability THE previously announced dp0 Quattro camera has been given an SRP of £899.99 with UK availability from the back end of this month (June). The latest award-winning design premium compact distinguishes itself from the rest of the range by combining its Foveon X3 sensor with a 14mm f/4 lens the equivalent of a 21mm in 35mm camera terms. All systems go at Halsys With immediate effect Halse Imaging Systems has changed its name to Halsys Ltd, with a new team in place, new website and new products in development

E

very business worth its salt goes through an evolutionary period of reflection, renewal and consolidation every now and again. And so it is with the company formerly known as Halse Imaging Systems – a leading supplier of professional software to the photo industry – which is now, as of June 1st, the more snappy and memorable Halsys Ltd. This is not just a straightforward exercise in rebranding however; the organisation has also undergone internal restructuring, with highly respected Managing Director Robin Henderson stepping down, and a dynamic new team taking over the reins. “The knowledge and expertise Robin has will continue to be available and I am sure our customers will join us in wishing him well,” says new MD Julian Kemp. “He leaves behind an outstanding and highly successful business which we are privileged to become custodians of and continue to build and develop.” Trained as an electronics engineer, Julian has built up a wealth of experience and knowledge in various engineering roles, including a stint at Durst (UK). The last 20 years were spent in the photographic industry working with Halse Imaging founder Bernie Halse and later with Robin Henderson. Greg Hodson, who joined Halse Imaging 14 years ago from an electromechanical and software engineering background, is also playing a key role. “We are delighted he is moving over to Halsys Ltd. as Technical Director where he will lead our team of highly skilled and motivated software developers,” adds Julian, who also introduces new Sales & Marketing Director Martin Malyon, the youngest team member: “Martin brings a youthful dynamic to the organisation. He spent several years in Software Testing and Quality Control with Halse Imaging working on the latest generation of software on board the worlds most high-tech cruise ships. He fully understands the needs of the software user. “

A new name… and exciting new products too For those not already aware of the name or the brand, Halsys Ltd, based in leafy Reigate in Surrey, is one of the world leading specialists in digital database workflows for pro, schools and specialist labs. It is a small independent development company with over 15 years of experience in designing software and equipment for the photographic and digital imaging industry, working closely with some of the biggest names in the trade. “Our products are being used by many pro and specialist laboratories and photographers around the world,” says Julian. Furthermore, he adds that Halsys Ltd has recently been working on some exciting products and services, that it believes: “can really help improve and transform the way people operate and monetise

a modern and professional photography business. As we are now working to bring these new products and services to market, we have naturally taken the opportunity to also begin work on refreshing our branding. “The same experienced team of people are available for our customers – photographic labs, businesses and photographers themselves – to contact – while all our email addresses, office address, and phone numbers remain the same. In addition to the change in name a new management team will be working to deliver our new and classic products and services. This will enable us to act faster to fulfil customers’ needs as these products start to evolve, drive and grow with your business. We want to hear your requirements and work together to build world class solutions.” As part of the re-branding the website has been updated and can be found at www.halsys.co.uk

Panasonic’s new arrival perfect for jetting off with

W

hilst Panasonic’s previous compact system camera announcement was the compact design GF7, the new numerically similar 16-megapixel Lumix DMC-G7 apes the traditional DSLR for its looks. Unlike the GF7, this latest model features the brand’s big push for this year: 4K video (3840x2160 pixels). Presently there is a push to sell 4K televisions but little 4K content to watch – so the suggestion here is that the customer creates their own. As with the similarly styled GH4 flagship released last summer and the FZ1000 that followed it, the G7 allows the extraction of 8 megapixel stills from 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video footage captured at 30fps. The second big part of your pitch to customers is that the camera weighs just 410g (body, battery and SD card) making for a possible travel option as they head off on summer holidays. Photo enthusiast-type customers may be more spurred on by the eye-level OLED viewfinder however plus customisable dials, while, at the back, a 3-inch 1040k dot resolution free-angle touch screen LCD should be a means via which to hook the selfie generation. The latter audience will also enjoy its built-in Wi-Fi connectivity that allows the camera to interact with smartphone or tablet; in fact a phone can be used as a means of remote operation. In terms of enhancements over predecessors, the Panasonic G7 also features an improved 360° panorama mode, a 3.5mm microphone socket, enhanced eyecup and sensor, focus peaking, a silent mode, a level gauge, plus 22 digital effects filters by way of on-board creative options. The G7 is available in black or silver iterations from mid June with prices starting at £599 SRP body only. In terms of items to piggyback on the sale of the new camera or indeed the previously launched GF7, available now are the two new Micro Four Thirds system lenses announced back in February this year. With a May on sale date the Lumix G Macro 30mm f/2.8 ASPH was being pitched as ideal for ‘life size macro shots’ while the Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7 ASPH./POWER O.I.S is said to be suitable for portraits with attractive background blur and/or low light shots.

Got customers embarking on summer hols and looking for a lightweight and reliable means of shooting pro-looking pictures? Arriving this month Panasonic’s DSLRstyled G7, its latest to record 4K-video, could be just the (travel) ticket…

4K summer promo with National Trust AS PART of its continuing partnership with the NT, Panasonic will be holding events around a variety of stunning properties this summer, until 27th September. Included in these events are photo walks with some of Panasonic’s official Lumix Ambassadors, on hand to educate visitors about the new Lumix camera range and the benefits of 4K technology. Attendees can borrow a choice of Lumix camera, including some of the latest 4K models, such as the LX100 and FZ1000 bridge camera. National Trust properties holding Panasonic events include Arlington Court, North Devon, which the brand suggests boasts picturesque gardens perfect for capturing nature shots, plus Bodiam Castle, East Sussex, with medieval architecture that should make for a stunning backdrop. Those who take part in the events will learn photography skills, including how to film in 4K video and extract 4K photos from the footage. Before heading home they will have an opportunity to print out the photos, and memories, to take away with them.

BPI NEWS BUSINESS BOOSTER

Fujifilm frames profits for FDIS members

A

business specialising in picture framing has become one of the newest members of Fujifilm’s Digital Imaging Service (FDIS) network. Hampshire-based Hayling Framing, run by husband and wife team Terry and Janet Driscoll, has recently decided to bring the business bang up to date with the addition of a new Fujifilm Frontier DL450 dry minilab and two Fujifilm Imagine kiosks. The installation of a drylab means that now they can also provide a fast and reliable photo printing service, selling their customers photo prints, passports, enlargements, canvas prints, posters, photo books and printed photo gifts. “We are the only full service photo retailer on the island and our customers have come to expect the very best in quality and service from us,” says Terry of a business that is now something of a one stop shop, in both processing images and providing the frames to display them in. “The expansion has also prompted a move to a bigger retail space, with everything looking on the up. Naturally as a member of Fujifilm’s Digital Imaging Service, he has also received a wealth of business support along with a range of eye-catching promotional signage and point of sales material. Also offered to FDIS members is a wealth of marketing support, designed to help establish their FDIS photo store within the local community as the place to go to for photo related products and services. “Fujifilm is one of the best known brands in the photo business. Everybody knows the brand and what it stands for,” says Terry. “We’ve already had a number of great comments from our regular customers who actually remark on the quality of the prints that come off the Dry Minilab.” He adds that his customers are finding the user interface on the two new Fujifilm Imagine kiosks very easy to use. “Plus, having the same functions available online via our website and offering a free downloadable mobile app as well, makes Fujifilm Imagine an easy sell. We do tend to get more orders now because our customers can order from home or anywhere

Fujifilm’s drylab range has been bolstered by new Fine Art Matte and Silk media, while a case study of a new FDIS member reveals how a drylab is successfully augmenting its framing business… Terry Driscoll, above, of Hayling Framing: “Regular customers… remark on the quality of the prints that come off the Dry Minilab”

and at any time through their mobile phones.” Fujifilm Marketing Manager Peter Wigington concludes: “It is a real pleasure to support such motivated photo retailers. Our FDIS marketing is all about promoting photo imaging on the high street and that’s exactly what Terry and Janet are doing.”

Expand your business with Fine Art Matte and Silk As a further money making aid to Fujifilm’s FDIS members, the brand has just introduced Fine Art Matte and Silk surface papers for its DL600 series and Frontier-S printers, for which initial shipments were due to

start at the end of May at the time of writing. The order procedures for dealers are the same as those currently available for DL600 series and Frontier-S DX100 papers, says Fujifilm. The idea is that the new media will allow its retail partners – and indeed any professional photo lab – to further expand their dry printing businesses. The 230gsm Fine Art Matte paper is described as ‘naturally textured’ and capable of delivering rich detail even in shadows and dark areas. Its manufacturer says that it is particularly suited to artistic images such as portrait, wedding, still life and landscape. The 250gsm Silk paper features what’s pitched as a pyramidal silk surface texture, similar to Crystal Archive DP II. It has a low reflection property and does not attract fingerprints. Again, this paper is particularly suited to your customers’ professional portraiture and wedding photography. For more details of the new media and also to find out how your business could benefit from FDIS membership, the man to speak to is once again Marketing Manager Peter Wigington on 01234 572138 or email pwigington@fuji.co.uk
