Ceci n’est pas un monochrome Festival des jardins, Chaumont sur Loire, France (2008–2009)
The theme of the Garden Festival de Chaumont-sur-Loire 2009 is colour. The design is a monochromatic blue garden. Blue is the most abstract and difficult colour. But actually a monochromatic garden doesn’t exist, no two plants have the same colour blue. Annuals and perennials with different flowering periods and heights are planted. The individual characteristics of each plant vanish. One glowing blue field is created.
The plant serves one purpose; contributing to the monochrome. The visitor looks onto the blue field from a narrow terrace. The plants of the monochrome will be exhibited in the garden house. Each plant with its own characteristics and its own specific colour will receive complete attention in the totally white space. It’s an ode to the individual plant. Ceci n’est pas un monochrome.
