All-electric injection forms part of £7m investment at UK medical moulder Owen Mumford, a UK-based supplier and manufacturer of specialist medical devices, has invested in all-electric injection moulding presses for its 'Phase 5' manufacturing facility, now close to completion, at the firm’s Chipping Norton site. The all-electric moulding presses include five Fanuc Roboshot moulding machines and four Fanuc six-axes robots. The presses form part of a £7million investment by Owen Mumford that the company says represents its vision of future needs for medical device manufacturing excellence. Comprising a 1,000 sq. m. clean room area, in a purpose-built facility, Owen Mumford says its manufacturing team has maximised on this 'ground-up' opportunity to design and implement the latest technology and thinking for clean room manufacturing facilities. Group Operations Director, Modestino Graziano, commented: "Best in class manufacturing facilities, along with a clear focus on manufacturing excellence are minimum requirements for our industry. We based 'Phase 5' on the high standards our clients expect, on the requirements to meet future industry regulations and our team's extensive experience of manufacturing for this sector.

"For example, the facility has been developed with energy savings in mind; and from our past experience of Fanuc Roboshot all-electric injection moulding machines, we know the total cost profile of electric machines is lower than that of hydraulic machines". Fanuc says the five new Roboshot S2000 i250B injection moulding machines installed at the site are ideal for the precise nature of medical device delivery systems where thin wall and ultra precision moulding is required. Incorporating its newly developed high power servo motor into the injection unit allows injection speeds of up to 1,000 mm/s to be achieved, together with accurately monitored high clamping pressure. High-quality and stable moulding is maintained by precise backflow

Peco stays on track with Wittmann automation Devon-based Peco Model Railways says it is reaping the productivity benefits of its investment in Wittmann automation for one of its key injection moulding cells.

The Wittmann W818 robot has been helping to mould lengths of the company’s famous Peco Streamline model railway track, with the automated moulding cell both realising payback and releasing labour for upskilled tasks elsewhere in the Peco plant. The Peco cell works off a two-shot mould deployed on a cycle time of approximately 10 seconds. As well as picking, placing and releasing the products and the sprue, the W818 is also programmed to stack each length of Streamline track into boxes that then index down a conveyor, ready for further assembly work within the Peco factory. The tracks are coloured dark brown and moulded in HPDE, with 60 percent of

monitoring, metering and the rigid construction of the machines. Overall machine control is provided by Fanuc's latest control technology based on its CNC control platform. Adding to the capability of 'Phase 5' will be the new Fanuc M-20iA robots, which have six-axes flexibilty in order to undertake load and unload tasks from the moulding machines together with second operation assembly tasks if required. Using the same control platform as the Roboshot moulding machines, the M-20iA robots have a payload capacity of 20 kgs, which Fanuc says provides adequate scope for future end of arm tooling requirements. further information: www.fanucrobotics.co.uk

Peco currently has a total of eleven injection moulding machines for its model railway production. Intent on full backward integration, Peco has invested extensively in its tool making and CAD/CAM facilities. “Model railway enthusiasts – our customers – are some of the most exacting customers in the world. PROFILE RAY-RAN Ray-Ran Test Equipment Ltd grows from strength to strength. Since Owner & Managing Director Neill Rayson-Randle formed the company in 1977, it has grown consistently over 30 years to become a world leader, in the manufacture of testing instruments for the plastics & polymer industries. Ray-Ran has always maintained a strong engineering and manufacturing base to its core business activities, with over 40 different products and a strong one-off project capability. The company can offer a wider portfolio than most other test equipment manufacturers worldwide. A key to the success of the company has been the constant development of new products to keep abreast of market demand. Equipment has been designed for diverse industries from Medical (testing prosthetic joints) to the ever growing recycling industry. Ray-Ranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s product range starts with instruments to test raw materials in pellet, flake or fibre form for Bulk Density and pourability, through to Density testing using Density Balances or Columns and the testing of the MFI or MVR of materials using the 6MPCA Melt Flow Tester.

Sample preparation is another area where RayRan excels by manufacturing a range of equipment to prepare samples from either the raw material or sheet form, like the Small Injection Moulding Apparatus, which will mould samples like dumbbells etc from pellets and flakes, or the Cutting Presses which will cut samples from sheet material. For the thicker sheets over 10mm thick or pipes up to 100mm thick, the CNC milling machines are used. Then finally Ray-Ran also manufacture a range of machines to test the samples & finished products, such as the Izod or Charpy Impact Tester, Static & Dynamic Friction for films & foils, Tensile Tester for elongation or compression, Softening point & Heat deflection with the HDT/Vicat equipment to name but a few.

Ray-Ran has been working on a new generation of Dedicated Microprocessor Systems to enhance the current product range, these include the MFI and Falling Dart Machines, Static & Dynamic Friction Tester, and the Pendulum Impact Tester which have already been released, the 6 Station Advanced HDT/Vicat apparatus is currently undergoing redevelopment and will incorporate the new microprocessor and will be released next year. New features of this microprocessor will include Graphical Display, Alpha-Numeric Keypad, Storage of user information, including Types & Testing parameters, Ethernet & RS232 Connectivity. These new products and enhancements will keep Ray-Ran's name synominous throughout the world for Quality Testing Instruments.

Axion to supply recycled material for PIM process Environmental Recycling Technologies (ERT), a developer of innovative technologies specifically focussing on plastic waste recycling, has announced collaboration with UK-based reprocessor, Axion, for the supply of materials for the company’s patented Powder Impression Moulding (PIM) process. The collaboration between the two companies will reportedly see Axion producing bespoke recipes of blended recycled plastic material for use by ERT's existing and future licensees. ERT says this will enable the licensees to focus on manufacturing PIM products by ensuring the consistent supply of quality-assured recycled plastic material. Axion will be the preferred source of supply of recycled polymers for ERT's licensees in the UK. "We are delighted to have secured this strategic commercial agreement with such a respected firm as Axion,” commented Lee Clayton, ERT’s Managing Director. “As

Recycled PEF stands up to sporting challenge

Avantium has turned recycled PEF into fibres to create what it says is a “100 percent bio-based” t-shirt

Avantium, a Netherlands-based technology company specialising in advanced high-throughput R&D, says it has made a breakthrough with its PEF (polyethylene furanoate) by demonstrating that bottles made from the material can be recycled into PEF fibres. The company, which has been developing PEF bottles with its partners, the Coca-Cola Company, Danone and ALPLA since 2011, says the fibres it has produced from recycled PEF bottles have been processed into 100 percent biobased t-shirts, using conventional polyester processing technology and equipment. “These first PEF T-shirts are yet another important step in the development and commercialisation of

capability to recycle plastic materials from end-of-life vehicles and waste electronics, we need to be creating new markets for those mixed plastic fractions which are the inevitable by-product of all high-grade polymer refinery operations. We see the PIM process as an excellent new technology to make shaped performance products for a diverse range of endmarkets, including both automotive and electrical goods in which we are already active players." further information: www.www.ertplc.com

The company cites the introduction of shorts and shirts made from recycled petroleumbased PET bottles by Nike during the 2010 World Cup as an example of where PEF could represent “the next step in sustainability.” The shirts, worn by the national teams of Brazil, Japan, England, the Netherlands and USA, both saved petroleum-based raw materials and reduced energy consumption by an estimated 30 percent. Avantium says tshirts made with 100 percent bio-based PEF would further reduce the dependence on petroleum, as well as decrease the carbon footprint of sportswear and apparel even more. “The production of the first biobased PEF T-shirts produced from recycled bottles adds apparel and sportswear to the many potential outlets of PEF. Colour control system said to reduce costs for extruders The Stothard Group, a UK-based provider of service, instruments and solutions for the accurate measurement of the colour and appearance of plastics, is supplying a tool that it says is helping to optimise efficiency and reduce scrap in extrusion manufacturing processes. As the UK and Ireland suppliers for the range of Hunterlab products, the Leicestershire-based company is supplying the Spectra Trend HT, a high resolution, lab-grade colour spectrophotometer designed for in-line colour monitoring, alongside a PLC with closed-loop colour control software developed by USA-based Plastore, Inc. The system, known as CPAT ‘Colour Processing Automation Technology’, is designed to optimise operator efficiency whilst ensuring consistent colour quality throughout a production run by using a PLC-based closed-loop system. The system is said to take over much of the hand and eye work associated with production, providing an automated, inline control system to eliminate colour errors and product waste.

The system allows the creation of a closed-loop color control system that minimizes the need for operator involvement while improving quality control and reducing material waste.

The system uses colorimetric data from the Spectra Trend HT to control the feeder rate, automatically adjusting material flow to maintain pre-set colour tolerances. It also adjusts for bulk density variations of colour concentrates and colour variations caused by embossing patterns and can be run in concert with gravimetric systems that control virgin, regrind and other additives. The system is said to ensure consistent colour quality throughout a production run, freeing operators to focus on additional value-added activities while minimising scrap and product recalls.

RAPRA supports over 400 companies with their polymer R&D enquiries RAPRA Ltd, the independent organisation dedicated to helping companies resolve issues with polymer related technical issues, materials selection and R&D, says it has seen a huge uptake of enquiries through its ‘Enquiry Service’ referral system. The organisation says it has put in excess of 400 companies, ranging from small SMEs to multi-national organisations, in touch with its network of Preferred Service Providers (PSPs) and Preferred Partners (PPs) for assistance with technical, supplier, training or funding issues. “RAPRA is putting even more resources into our Enquiry Service as a result of growing our Preferred Service Provider (PSP) network,” commented Steve Shaw, RAPRA Director. “Since the beginning of 2012 the PSP network has grown dramatically.
