Winner of the 2018 Open Category – Cally Stephens

The competition Architecture is all around us; virtually everywhere we go there is some kind of building, structure or space. Photography is now the most accessible format of recording our lives especially with the development of the smart phone. I often think that photography sits at one end of the artistic spectrum being instant and accessible whilst Architecture is at the other end as buildings take lots of time and money to produce. In 2018 Bath Preservation Trust launched its first competition to discover how photographers interpret architecture, and as a way of making architecture more accessible to a wider audience. The competition had a great response both nationally and internationally. This year we opened an exhibition showcasing the top ten photographs from each category and the winning junior photographer image and saw 3000 visitors. Our judges have managed to select images that challenge what people think of as “Architectural Photography” visitors will came away with from the exhibition is a much better idea or love of architecture. Quote: “I love architecture, if I wasn’t a surgeon, I’d definitely be and architect. I haven’t really had my photography up in a gallery before, it’s a privilege to have them on display at the Museum of Bath Architecture.” Hassan El- Wakeel LRPS 1st & 6th place Bath Category.

2019 This year’s competition will have three categories with two new themed categories: Architecture of Entertainment From ancient amphitheatres to then multiplex cinema architects have designing entertainment spaces for thousands of years. This year we are setting a challenge for photographers to capture images of architecture, interior or exterior, that have an entertainment theme be it the Sydney opera house or the Theatre Royal. Bath: After the Georgians Most people who come to visit Bath are here to see the Georgian city. However, as the city has expanded and developed over the years so too has its architecture. Even within the centre you can find the odd 1960’s brutalist building and as you travel further out of the centre great examples of Victorian and Edwardian styles can be found. What can you find? What buildings old or new catch your eye? Junior architectural photographer of the year Open to photographers under the age of 19. We want to see what architecture inspires you? What do you prefer old buildings or ultra-modern? What’s the coolest building you’ve seen?
