CORE VALUE OF THE MONTH
WE PLEDGE TO FOSTER INCLUSION & BELONGING
We value the work of being anti-racist and truly accessible to our diverse population of learners, faculty, and staff, where every voice is encouraged, heard, and respected, and authentic selves are valued. In doing so, we strive to create an environment of not just mere inclusion but also true belonging.
For the month of October, we are putting a special emphasis on the Core Value: "We Pledge to Foster Inclusion and Belonging." Below you will find examples provided from the Community Week session and from other community conversations so that you can think about how you can intentionally incorporate the Core Values into your work.
Here are the ways YOU are committing to that Core Value in your work:
Be mindful that students are different and have different personalities, some are introverted and some extroverted Be sure those who want to speak feel free to do so as much as they desire as it is their preference to get the most out of their education. Others show participation and engagement in a different way and should not feel pressured to speak or have a grade depend on their verbal contributions. Create multilingual welcome signs throughout campus on the digital board in admissions, Blake, Ryan Center, etc.
Better incorporate info about accommodations for students with learning and accessibility needs to prospective and current students.
Make a point to get to know each student and ask them to educate us.
Encourage students to join groups, mentor/help with different cohorts (2nd years helping 1st years) and sharing resources
Embrace the different perspectives we each bring to the table
Get to know each other as people rather than just as professionals Be mindful that our cultural dynamics trickle down to students
Remember that feelings of camaraderie start at the top Empower and support synchronous components to online learning Create opportunities for everyone to identify their pronouns in various avenues
In hybrid meetings, be mindful of colleagues or students that are online Make it a point to ask anyone online to contribute to the conversation

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
Provided by: Tanya Coles Dailey, D.S.W, LMSW Assistant Director of Health and Wellness CenterMonday, October 10, 2022, is World Mental Health Day It is a day to bring awareness and education about mental health on a global scale The main goal is to help remove the stigma, barriers, inequities, and misconceptions about those who live with mental health disorders.
World Mental Health Day also highlights global initiatives that address the need for inclusion, preventative and accessible care, as well as safety for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
As Covid 19 brought the world to a standstill and threatened everyone’s health and safety, it also negatively impacted and exacerbated the mental health and wellbeing of many within our families, within our communities, and the world.
Organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), have introduced a campaign with the theme “Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority”. This theme focuses on the urgency and importance of keeping mental illness at the forefront when it comes to health and wellness. From a global perspective, it speaks to the cultural nuances, beliefs, and efforts that give a voice and a face to those that are silently suffering.
As we recognize World Mental Health Day, let us commit to prioritizing the need for equitable mental health and wellness resources for our communities and those around the world

NATIONAL LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH
Provided by: Peter Testori, EdD Dean of Academic Resources & Title IX CoordinatorAt Bay Path, “We strive to create an environment of not just inclusion but true belonging ” One way we embody and take action on this Core Value is by learning about others that may be different from ourselves. LGBTQ+ History Month presents an opportunity to do just that. That APA shares that, “October is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month in the United States. It was first observed in 1994. October was selected because it coincides with National Coming Out Day on October 11th, and because it is the month of the first March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1979.”
Representation matters. Accurate, authentic representation can break down barriers, open us to new ideas, create powerful role models, and even be a source of inspiration Please join us in celebrating this month by taking a moment to learn more about LGBTQIA2S+ history. Visit theoutwordsarchive.org or glsen.org and remember that the beauty and potential of our entire community lies in our diversity.
