Channel your inner Bianca Jagger and work the burgundy shadow from Burberry’s complete eye palette Rose Pink 10. Go the smoky haze route on the eyes and team with a coat of Shiseido Perfect Rouge lip shine. Paris Gallery.

Nude lips and violet lids are one of the sexiest colour duos in the book. A nude lip goes with everything, but the nudey-pink Clinique Lip Pop Color in Blush Pop with Clarins Ombre Matte Eye Shadow No20 Ultra Violet with make your violet-hued smoky eyes pop. Paris Gallery.

COLOUR ME HAPPY! Piecing together a summertime makeup strategy can be tough, but that’s what we’re here for. Match the perfect eyeshadow to a beautiful lip colour for a look that will see you through the work week, weekend, and beyond.

Red lipstick, like Sisley’s Phyto-Lip Twist 13 Poppy, always steals the show, but that doesn’t mean you have to go with a completely bare lid. To balance the lips but match the glamour, opt for the gold shimmer in Guerlain’s Terracotta Bayadere exclusive palette. Paris Gallery.

Swap your go-to black smoky eye for Clarins Ombre Matte Eye Shadow No 21 Cobalt Blue. A natural, just-bitten lip colour like the Gucci Audacious Color Intense Lipstick in 160 Nostalgia that doesn’t compete but complements your dark eyeshadow works best with your eye. Paris Gallery.

When using blue Tom Ford Lash Tips Mascara go for lipsticks in cool shades. Blue by itself is a cool tone and does not work too well with a warm palette. Plum lipsticks like Dolce & Gabbana Matte Lipstick in Magnetic work best. Paris Gallery.

Double down on the girly shade. Team Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer 506 with a lighter shade on the eyes like Lancome’s Eyeshadow Dazzling 305 for a mature spin on the trend. Paris Gallery.

Bolivia’s Death Road

Incredible scenic variety and a spectacular descent of more than 3,600m/11,800 feet, from snow-covered high-altitude plains and mountain ranges down to the steaming Amazonian Jungle. Part of the ride is on the dramatic and scenic “World’s Most Dangerous Road,” dubbed such by the Inter-American Development Bank in 1995, and locally known as “The Death Road” or “Camino de la muerte!”. This is 64 km (40 miles) of downhill riding with only a few small uphills and a couple of flat bits. After the ride relax at La Senda Verde BQ Plus

Cabins and Animal Refuge, complete with rescued monkeys, parrots, a snake, and much more. Stay a night or three at La Senda Verde (camping or in cabins), enjoy the swimming pool and the river, return to La Paz the same day, or go to the quiet, sub-tropical jungle town of Coroico where you can find a wide range of hotel accommodation. Continue from Coroico to Rurrenabaque and the Amazon Jungle, or return at your leisure to La Paz.

language, Munda Biddi means “path through the forest.” This cycling trail runs through miles of “jarrah forest” – from the local name for eucalyptus trees. The 206mile (332-kilometer) section from Mundaring to Collie opened in July 2004, and two extensions will take it to Albany. You may encounter forest natives like western brush wallaby, western gray kangaroos, and brushtail possum. Camp in shelters or stay in quaint country towns. WALK THE TRACK Along the Rh

ine

Along the Rhine, Germany

On its picturesque route through meadows, forests and vineyards to the west of the Rhine, the Rhine Castles Trail passes numerous palaces and castles. It is a technically demanding trail that provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the magnificent scenery and the rich cultural heritage of the region. With your walking boots on, you’ll feel as if you have taken a step back in time as you encounter numerous masterpieces of Rhenish architecture. Many of the mighty castles with their towers and crenellated walls are open to the public. Those who want to enjoy the wines and the much celebrated

‘romance of the Rhine’ will also be enchanted by the Rhine Castles Trail. The Middle Rhine Valley, which stretches from Bingen to Bonn, is one of Germany’s most famous winegrowing regions. You can sample the golden wines after walking through the sun-kissed vineyards – and stop off at vintners’ taverns that offer homemade regional fare.

Laguna De los Tres, Argentina

Trekking in Patagonia is a highlight for many travelers to South America, and it’s never been easier than from Argentina’s ‘trekking capital’, the village-cum-fledgling-city of El

Chaltén. Whether you prefer to rise late and dawdle the afternoon away next to picturesque tarns, or enjoy getting fully tooled for a week-long epic out on Hielos Sur (the Southern Patagonian Icecap), Chaltén has it all. The Laguna Los Tres trail has the best views of Fitz Roy and surrounding glaciers. This is an overnight walk that can optionally be lengthened by several days to include the beautiful Rio Electrico valley. The best views of Monte Fitz Roy are just after dawn, so start early for the steep climb up to Laguna Los Tres, an exquisite glacial lake towered over by Fitz Roy and its attendant peaks and glaciers. 14 NUTRITION TIPS FOR A HEALTHY SUMMER Summer in Qatar doesn’t exactly involve the beach, backyard barbecues, or outdoor dinners. But you can still enjoy the hot weather while keeping your nutrition in check with the tips below. 1. Drink green tea instead of sweet tea. Green tea has a natural component that helps speed up your metabolism. Skip the box tea and opt for the brew-it-yourself with boiling water and a tea-bag-type tea. 2. Serve seafood. Summer is the ideal time to get the freshest catch from the local super- or fish market. Grill salmon, tuna, lobster, steam clams, and calamari for a low-calorie, protein-packed lunch or dinner. 3. Don’t skip breakfast. When you wake up in the morning, your body is running on fumes. Eating a breakfast with protein, carbs, and healthy fat kicks your metabolism into high gear and provides energy for the day. BQ Plus

4. Enjoy summer fruits and veggies. It’s easy to sink into a vegetable rut, eating the same boring veggies week after week, but with summer comes fresh choices in Qatar from around the world. Including a mix of

in-season colourful veggies in your meals gives your body a nutrient kick. 5. Snack at work. Bring snacks to work and graze throughout the day. When you eat more often – five to six times per day – you’re far less likely to overeat and more likely to stay energized. 6. Grab a sports drink. For workouts lasting longer than 45 minutes, drinking a sports drink every 15 to 20 minutes can help you maintain energy, increase endurance, and stay hydrated. 7. Drink healthier beers. If you’re going to indulge, opt for antioxidant-packed craft brews (if not in Qatar, then while you’re out); to save calories, choose beers with less than 100 calories. 8. Hydrate often. The summer heat makes you more susceptible to dehydration. Start off your day by drinking two glasses of water and

R&R | NUTRITION

25

keep drinking at each meal, as well as before and after your workout, to stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you as a reminder to stay hydrated. 9. Cook meals together. Involve your friends and family in your healthy lifestyle this summer. A simple way to start: Plan meals, shop, and cook with your spouse and kids. 10. Downsize your dinnerware. We’re not talking about buying new plates, just using the smaller ones in your set for meals like lunch and dinner. Cornell University researchers found that by switching from 12- to 10-inch plates anyone can reduce calorie consumption by 20 to 22 percent and lose nearly two pounds per month. And that’s without changing any other aspect of your diet. 11. Recover with a post-workout shake. After exercising, blend your favorite summer fruits and a scoop of whey protein into a shake to kickstart the muscle-building process, help your body recover from training, and boost your energy levels. Try one of these shake recipes. 12. Pre-plan your meals. You plan your weekend getaways and activities for summer. Why not your meals? Make it easy by preparing all of your food on Friday so that you have enough meals for the week. The best part: You’ll save money. 13. Give your house a summer cleaning. You need an environment that reflects your healthy way of living and your summer fitness goals. To start, remove unhealthy foods from your home (so you’re not tempted). While you’re at it, stock your office with fruit, nuts, and other healthy snacks. 14. Build a better burger. Create a healthier burger with whole wheat buns, lean meats, and delicious toppings like pineapple, wasabi, guacamole, and feta cheese. May/June 2016

He holds the second highest jump in history of 2:43m, a mere two centimetres short of Cuban Javier Sotomayor’s 23 year old world record. The 2014 World Indoor Champion and London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist will return to his second Olympic Games as one of the favourites for the Olympic title, which would make him Qatar’s first-ever Olympic Champion. Mutaz Barshim speaks to BQ Plus ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics. How did you get into athletics? I first started high jump around the age of 11. I started by going to the sports club. My father was an athlete and he used to take me with him

BQ Plus

to practice. That’s how I ended up becoming involved in athletics in the first place. Basically I was doing everything except throwing events. I was running a lot, doing cross country, long distance, I even tried walking. After a year, I went towards jumping, long jump, high jump, triple jump. I stopped triple jump because I always had problems with my knees. I didn’t like long jump that much. I chose high jump even though I was really bad at it.

“YOU CAN’T RUSH GREATNESS. IF YOU WANT TO BE GREAT, YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR TIME” It took me a long time to become good. I was bad for a really long time. I’d go to training and I was bad. The next day I’d return and I was even worse. The day after, worse again. I think I was just so stubborn and I was patient and I always came back no matter what happened. I made a choice because I wanted to do the high jump. What role did Aspire Academy play in your journey? I was selected from thousands of other young, aspiring athletes to

attend the prestigious Aspire Academy at the age of 13. Aspire, for me, is like a second home. We were like a family and they taught us everything and provided everything we needed – the sports education, sports psychology, training camps, medical care, coaches. I think it was a very big step for my career when I came to Aspire. It was really, really helpful. I graduated from Aspire in 2009, when

my personal best was 2.14 m. Tell us about your coach. It was the Qatar Athletics Federation’s appointment, in September 2009, of Stanislaw Szczyrba as coach of the national team that took me to the next level, improving my personal best from 2:14m to 2:31m in just one year between 2009 and 2010. My coach is a very crazy guy. I used to hate him

in the beginning but now I love him. We have a very good relationship, like father and son. We understand each other. I can just look him in the eye and understand what he wants. We’ve got to combine like one person in order to achieve greatness. How has your father, an athlete, inspired you? He’s always there when I’m competing, when I’m training. Whenever he has a chance to come and see and support, give advice at home make sure I don’t stay up late, make sure I get everything – the right environment. At the time when I wasn’t really aware of the kind of importance of these small details, he was aware of them and taught them to me step by step at the right time.

“I FOCUS ON MYSELF, TRYING TO BEAT MYSELF, TRYING TO IMPROVE MYSELF EVERY DAY. IF I BEAT MYSELF THERE, I THINK THAT’S IT” He always told me ‘Your time is coming, be patient, focus on what you’re doing. As long as you keep doing your best every day, it’s just a matter of time’. And he was right. You can’t rush greatness. If you want to be great, you have to take your time. Only a few people know that. My father’s like a mentor to me. I think it’s really important.

I remember when I wanted to be an athlete, I always watched these videos, I was like I just wanted to be in the Olympics, I wanted to try how it feels to be in the Olympic Stadium, the Olympic Village, just to represent your country at the Olympics. I wanted to feel that feeling. And to be able to do that and be on the podium was incredible. I collected Qatar’s fourth Olympic bronze medal at London 2012 but I almost missed participating because of a serious injury. I couldn’t even jog and it was a month before the Olympics and it was really bad. I think I got the green light to compete like 10 days before the Olympics. I wasn’t sure if I was going to go or not. But the moment I stepped on the field, I thought if it’s my last jumping day, let it be. I’m going to make it. I gave it all I have and I got a medal so I’m really happy. 2014 was a ground-breaking season for you. Yes, 2014 was an amazing year. At the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland, I created a new Asian indoor record of 2.38m. I did well in the final Diamond League meet of the 2014 season with a PB of 2.43m. I also came first in the Asian Indoor Championships, World Asian Indoor Championships and the Asian Games in South Korea. I got back to my coach and I was like, ‘Coach we made history’. And he was like, ‘Yeah we made history. It’s done, you don’t need to prove anything to nobody now. You already did it.’ You have faced many challenges. How do you deal with them? At the beginning of this season a cramp during a crucial part of the competition prevented me from retaining my World Indoor title in Portland. You’re going to get injured, things are going to go bad – it’s not how many times you fall but how many times you get up. Whatever happens, I make sure the next day I’m coming to the track. I’m going to work for it. BQ Plus

Mutaz during the 7th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships Doha 2016

How prepared are you for Rio 2016? My full focus is on Rio 2016 and chasing my lifelong dream of winning the coveted Olympic gold. This won’t be easy with the standard of high jump currently the strongest it has ever been and many athletes capable of taking gold and even breaking the world-record. But I am not focusing on the rest of the field. I think my biggest rival in Rio is myself. It’s very easy to lose focus thinking about different stuff around you. I don’t do that. I focus on myself, trying to beat myself, trying to improve myself every day. If I beat myself there, I think that’s it. The Olympics is the greatest sports event in the universe. It doesn’t matter which nation you are, which kind of sport you love or not, everybody’s engaged, everybody’s supporting. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never seen

sport in your life. You’ve got a nation’s hope behind your back. It’s just great. I love it. You can follow Mutaz Barshim’s Olympic Dreams on the Qatar Olympic Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube channels under the hashtag #YallaQatar. The Rio 2016 Olympic Games take place from 5th August – 21st August. The QOC has launched a #YallaQatar public support campaign across its social media channels to encourage the whole nation to get behind Team Qatar’s athletes and celebrate their incredible feats. The Olympic Dreams film series will profile each team and athlete, and explore the highs, lows, motivations and dreams of Qatar’s Olympians on their journeys to Rio. n a CinemaCon interview for her ironically titled upcoming comedy Bad Moms, Kunis shared with her fellow cast mates – all of whom are moms in real life as well – and Entertainment Tonight how becoming a parent to 19-month-old daughter Wyatt Isabelle has changed her latenight habits. “I can let loose as much as I want, but at 6:45 in the morning, she’s awake and so am I,” Kunis explains. “[She doesn’t] care if I let loose the night before, so I can only let loose so much, to be honest … I don’t know what letting loose means. Probably not going to sleep at 9:30!” Kunis, 32, admits how different her life is now that she’s in her 30s and in the thick of a new phase of her life – not only as mom to Wyatt, but wife to her former That ’70s Show costar Ashton Kutcher, 38, whom she married last July.

“I KNOW THAT WHEN WE DECIDED TO HAVE A KID, WE WERE READY TO NO LONGER BE SELFISH” “I re-prioritized my life, in all honesty,” Kunis says. “I travelled through all my 20s, and I was very selfish – in a good way, not, like, in a way that I regret. In a great way. And I think having a kid made me realize how incredibly selfless I want to be.” According to Kunis, becoming a mother has changed not only the way she lives her life, but her outlook on what’s important to her now. “[Parenting is] great, but it does change the way you look at life and [whether] what you do is something worth doing instead of being with

Husband Ashton Kutcher with daughter Wyatt Isabelle

your kids. It does balance it out.” And though this new adventure hasn’t been without its challenges and habit overhauls, Kunis makes it clear that she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I would never trade it for [anything]. Ever ever,” she says. “But I know that when we decided to have a kid, we were ready to no longer be selfish – at least start the process. Because innately, as humans, we’re

very selfish people, and we really wanted to have a family.” She adds, “Having this little human to raise … it was a balancing act, and then you learn how to be a great partner, and a great wife, and a great woman, and be yourself, and still be responsible for a living child. It’s definitely a learning process.” Bad Moms opens July 29.This article originally appeared in People. May/June 2016

hen used responsibly, a credit card can be a beneficial financial tool. Making regular credit card payments can help improve your credit rating, and some credit cards even offer airline miles or cash rewards for purchases. But if credit card spending gets out of control, monthly payments and accumulated interest can become a problem. Follow these tips to avoid common credit card pitfalls. 1. Pay off your balance every month. You can avoid paying interest on your credit card purchases by paying the outstanding balance in full each monthly billing cycle. As long as you pay off your balance at the end of every cycle, you’ll never pay an interest charge (which may not be true for balance transfers and cash advances). Resist the temptation to spend more than you can pay off each month, and you’ll enjoy the benefits of using a credit card without interest charges. 2. Use the card for needs not wants. A credit card should be used with discretion, since frivolous purchases can lead to debt. Credit cards

BQ Plus

can be used in emergency situations, such as a mobile phone bill that is due before your next payday. Use the credit card as a temporary loan to yourself, and then pay back the amount as soon as possible to avoid accumulating interest charges. 3. Never skip a payment. If you have accumulated a significant credit card balance, there are ways to get out of debt. An important piece of credit card advice to remember is to never skip a payment. Pay your bill every month, even if you can only afford the minimum payment. Missing a payment could result in a late payment fee, a higher interest rate and a negative mark on your credit score. 4. Use the credit card as a budgeting tool. If you feel confident that you can use a credit card responsibly and pay off the balance every month, try using it as a budgeting tool. By making all of your purchases with your credit card, you can see exactly how much you’ve spent at the end of every month. Of course, you should only do this if you’re confident you can pay off the balance each month. To make sure your credit card spending doesn’t get out of hand, never

charge more to your card than you have saved in your bank account. 5. Use a rewards card. If you’re using a credit card for most or all of your purchases, make sure to find a card that offers rewards. Not only will you avoid paying interest on your purchases if you pay off the balance every month, you’ll also earn rewards such as cash, airline miles or retail points. 6. Don’t exceed 30% of your total credit limit. One way to keep your credit score healthy is to make regular monthly payments on time. Another is to keep your credit utilization ratio under 30%. The credit utilization ratio is the percentage of total available credit that you’re using. For example, if you have a credit card with a limit of QR 10,000, you should keep your balance under QR 3,000. But remember that the ratio applies to the sum all of your cards. So if one credit card has a QR 3,000 limit and a QR 3,000 balance, and a second credit card has a limit of QR 7,000 with no balance, you’re right at the 30% utilization mark (QR 3,000 of an available QR 10,000).
