the ‘hot’ colours of the season, in gowns. Sahar Al Homoud, a Kuwaiti designer whose boutique at Heya exhibition attracted a large number of visitors, said: “This was my third time exhibiting at Heya, and I enjoy participating in both annual editions of Heya – the spring/summer episode as well as the autumn/winter event. All my clothes are hand-worked individually and involve many hours of labour. My Ramadan collection included gowns and jelabiyas, in which I combined traditional styles with the contemporary, while interlacing an African theme.”

HOW TO MAKE YOUR COLOGNE LAST LONGER With an explosion of citrus predominantly of Sicilian mandarin, Allure Homme Sport Cologne from Chanel delivers invigorating freshness. The subtle lovage-elemi accord unleashes its bursting, spicy notes to bring intensity and vigor to the fresh facet of the fragrance. 51 East.

Essential do’s and don’ts of spraying your signature scent.

A

s you walk out the door in the morning, you spritz yourself with a hit of cologne, thinking it’ll serve as the perfect finishing touch for the day ahead. Easy enough. But by the time you make it to the office, you realize that the stuff has dissipated to the point that you can barely whiff it at all – a shame given the amount of cash you had to drop to buy the bottle. Well, good news! It doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some tips – all the things you can do to add precious hours to the life of your favourite designer fragrance, and give yourself a solid shot at smelling fresh all day long. Or at least until you have time to reapply. DO: Apply right after you shower. If you think the best time to spray is at the last possible moment before leaving home – since, logic tells you, that’ll give it less time to disappear before you see people, then think again. In truth, the perfect moment to apply is just as you’re getting out from under the shower. It’s at that point that your pores are at their most open, allowing cologne to seep into the skin and giving you a longer-lasting aroma.

DON’T: Keep the bottle in the bathroom. Warm. Wet. Bright. Your bathroom may be a great place to get ready in the morning, but when it comes to protecting your valuable bottle of cologne, it’s not exactly up to the task. Because, you see, heat, humidity, and light can actually speed the breakdown of your favourite scents. So instead, keep your cologne somewhere cool, dark, and dry, like on your nightstand or dresser. BQ Plus

Byredo’s new perfume, Super Cedar, is cool, clean and wearable, while its cedar wood scent injects warmth and energy into the fragrance. 100ml at approx. QR 940; Paris Gallery.

Inspired by both the iconic black trench coat and by London – a city of great contrasts, Mr Burberry’s fresh, crafted top notes of crisp zesty grapefruit are cut with a seductive base of earthy vetiver and smoky guaiac wood. 150ml EDT is priced at approx. QR 480; Paris Gallery.

DO: Moisturize beforehand. You know how, after long periods of drought, the ground has trouble retaining water, causing landslides, flooding, and the like? Think of applying fragrance to dry skin as kind of the same thing; unless your hide is properly moisturized, cologne won’t absorb as efficiently, making it evaporate more quickly. And if you’re trying to get your scent to stick around for the long haul, that’s something you want to avoid. DON’T: Spray directly onto your clothes. Sure, there’s something to be said for the “mist” method of cologne application. Especially for more potent colognes, it can be a nice way to make sure you don’t overdo it. But if there’s one thing you truly want to avoid, it’s a direct hit to the shirt or jacket. Besides the fact that it can damage the garment (since many colognes are alcohol-based), your scent will also dissipate quickly and strongly due to airflow.

Paco Rabanne Invictus Aqua’s sturdy guaiac wood pairs its powerful scent with ambregris to form a winner’s pedestal, joined by woody amber. 100ml at approx. QR 324; Sephora, Paris Gallery, Debenhams.

DO: Layer your fragrance. There’s a reason that most fragrances these days are made with corresponding soaps, aftershaves, body balms, and more. By using these complementary products, you remove competing scents from your aroma repertoire, which could otherwise detract from the bouquet of your cologne. Eisenberg J’Ose Intense’s highly addictive head notes of mint and armoise meet the richness of mocha coffee at the heart of the perfume. 100 ml at approx. QR 518; Paris Gallery.

DON’T: Overapply. We get why you might think that simply spraying yourself with more cologne will make the smell last longer. Logically, that makes sense. But the truth is, the only thing you’re doing by dousing yourself is front-loading the day; chances are, you’ll still be scentless by the same time, but everyone will hate you for over-odouring their morning. So keep it to a spritz or two, max. You can always double down later. DO: Spritz on your wrists. For generations, men have sprayed cologne in the same place – their wrists – and for good reason. Because pulse points, where veins and arteries are closer to the surface of the skin, are warmer than the rest of the body. This warmth helps scents remain strong while also fully developing them so that they’re able to linger on the rich, long-lasting middle and base notes.

Musk Oud by Kilian is a perfume built on the contrast between a liquorish overdosed rose, and an animalic Oud accord of great sensuality made comfortable thanks to captive musks from Firmenich. 30ml travel spray at approx. QR 870; Paris Gallery.

DON’T: Rub them together. Contrary to what you might have been taught, rubbing cologne between the wrists can “bruise the scent,” meaning it’ll break down faster. Which is the opposite of what you’re looking to do. June/July 2016

The colour palette used in the Fendi styled apartments is reminiscent of the ever shifting sands of the desert and the shadows cast by its towering dunes. A sophisticated mix of onyx, bronze and gold is repeated throughout, in varying shades and patterns, with some items utilising stark angles and others, rounded and gentle on the eye. Textures and finishes are artfully mixed to give reflection or depth, as required. The floor, a grid of lozenges, is arranged in a geometric pattern that’s been vein-cut and lacquered to create a beautiful surface on which to set the scene for the rest of the apartment. Woqod stocks up on LPG for Ramadan Qatar Fuel (WoqodD) has announced that it is fully prepared for the increase in LPG demand for cooking over Ramadan with the provision of an additional 250,000 Shafaf LPG cylinders in stock now. Woqod CEO Engineer Ibrahim Al Kuwari stated, “During Ramadan we always see an increase in LPG demand as families prepare for cooking family meals during the Holy month. We have planned for this additional demand by increasing the number of Shafaf LPG cylinders available for our customers to buy. It is our intention to have all steel cylinders replaced by Shafaf within a year from now. We are running, at WOQOD service stations and selected supermarkets, a promotion where, if customers bring their steel LPG cylinder, we will give a QR 100 discount off the price of a new Shafaf LPG cylinder.” Shafaf LPG cylinders weigh less than half that of a steel cylinder, 6 kgs compared to 17 kgs. They are easier to carry and cleaner as they do not rust over time, like steel cylinders. But the main advantage of Shafaf LPG

cylinders is that they do not explode in a fire. A recent fire test carried out under the supervision of Civil Defense clearly demonstrates this. Shafaf is available from all Woqod service stations, over 230 supermarkets across Qatar and now from the LPG private delivery trucks who deliver both steel and Shafaf LPG cylinders. During the Ramadan period, Woqod will run additional deliveries to make sure that Shafaf LPG cylinders are available for this busiest time of the year.

Comfort and Omo are introducing their well-known annual clothes donation drive to Qatar in partnership with Qatar Charity. “Share A Touch Of Love this Ramadan” with Omo and Comfort encourages people to donate clothes to those less fortunate during the Holy Month of Ramadan. The campaign, now in its seventh year, has collected over 500,000 clothes in total since its start. In 2014, the campaign set a Guinness World Record for the largest clothing collection drive, and then broke its own record in 2015. Until 6 July 2016, the campaign will receive donations at the Omo and Comfort booth at the Landmark Mall in Doha. This year, the “Share A Touch Of Love this Ramadan” initiative has partnered with popular chauffeur cab booking service, Careem, to arrange collections from people’s homes during weekends as well. Clothes placed in donation boxes are collected and carefully washed with Omo

and Comfort before being packaged and delivered to the families in need and low income individuals through Qatar Charity.

Lanes of Glory Swimmers Nada Arakji, the first female athlete to represent Qatar twice in the Olympics, and Noah Al-Khulaifi, the youngest ever Qatari Olympian, share their outstanding stories ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics.

T

he Rio 2016 Olympic Games will mark the first time the Olympics are held in South America and will see over 10,000 athletes from 206 nations compete in Rio de Janeiro. The best athletes from around the globe will challenge themselves to the absolute limit of their ability before a global TV audience of 4.8 billion people. Qatar is sending its biggest delegation to the Olympic Games since its debut in Los Angeles 1984. Thirty six athletes will compete in seven sports – athletics, swimming, shooting, handball, equestrian, table tennis and judo. With just two months to go to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, 22-year old Qatari swimmer Nada Arakji will once again make history as the first female athlete to represent Qatar twice in the Olympics, while 17-year old Qatari swimmer Noah Al-Khulaifi will head to his first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, making him the youngest ever Qatari Olympian. Nada and Noah speak to BQ Plus about their Olympic dreams as they finalise their preparations to compete in the most important competition of their young lives.

WHEN I’M STRESSED IN MY STUDIES AND I HAVE A LOT OF THINGS GOING ON SWIMMING REALLY HELPS ME LOOSEN UP AND NOT THINK ABOUT ANYTHING FOR A WHILE Did you always want to be swimmers? Nada Arakji (NA): I did basketball, netball, ballet and swimming obviously. I started swimming at the age of nine at a small club called Tidal Waves. I first took it as some kind of fitness. The more I did, the more I fell in love with swimming and felt a connection to the sport. I was more committed and passionate about it. Every other BQ Plus

sport didn’t feel right. But when I started swimming I felt yes this is for me. Noah Al-Khulaifi (NK): I really like the feeling of the water. I like the way you can control it and you can control your body through water. It’s an amazing feeling and that’s why I chose to do swimming. They used to call me Fish. I joined the national team at the age of eight after finding my love of water. How has your family inspired and supported you? NA: My father, Mohamed Wafa Arakji, was Qatar’s national football team goalkeeper in the 1970s and ´80s, as well as a player for Qatari club Al-Sadd. It’s pretty great

CELEBRITY | QATAR RIO SWIM TEAM

having a football player as a father. He gives me a lot of advice and he keeps me motivated. So that’s one of the things that keeps me going and he tells me all these experiences that he’s had and things that he’s done so it’s pretty interesting to know and relate with that.

I HAVE SET 14 GCC RECORDS WITH THE SUPPORT OF MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS NK: I have set 14 GCC records with the support of my family and friends. Some of my records have been broken only by my younger brothers Yacoub, 15, and Yousef, 11. In any athletic endeavour when you have a brother or sister competing with you it really changes the way it works. And it helps a lot because you can’t get lazy or back off training because you know you have someone right behind you, so it really helps me push myself. I used to train with Yacoub quite a lot. Currently we have the same coaches but I have different program just because the preparation for Rio will require something different. My parents make an effort to attend even my daily training sessions, the support

45

really helps because you know that there is someone there who really cares. As students, how do you balance both swimming and your studies? NK: I am one year away from graduating from the Qatar Academy, but I have to train tirelessly, more so now with Rio 2016 around the corner. In terms of training we have 10 swimming sessions as well as four gym sessions. So for the swimming sessions, we do four in the morning and six in the afternoon. All of the training is geared towards building a complete athlete. Balancing my school commitments with training leaves me with as little as two hours of free time a day; I must dedicate time for my studies before and after training as well as during school hours. NA: Balancing between swimming and my studies is hard, but since I’m passionate about both it’s all about organising your time. I think that’s the key thing to success. Nothing’s going to get in your way if you love what you do. And when I’m stressed in my studies and I have a lot of things going on swimming really helps me loosen up and not think about anything for a while. I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University Qatar this year, so I am focusing on my training for Rio 2016, which takes place in the state-of-the-art Hamad Aquatic Centre. I am hoping to utilize my previous experience when I compete in Rio.

concentration. My main motivation in swimming is the feeling when I win, or when I do a really good time or when I achieve something – it’s really an amazing feeling and that’s really what motivates me and keeps me driven. I don’t think I’ve missed out on anything since I’ve begun competing because the experiences and competitions that I’ve gone to is a much richer experience than I think any youngster gets usually. How prepared are you for Rio 2016? NA: My experience in London has helped. I’ve gone to my first Olympics, seen what it’s like. I have an idea of what the atmosphere will be like in Rio. My goals for the Olympics Games are to be the best I can be and definitely to get a personal best time. With all the training I’ve done I hope that I’ll be able to improve my times and for everyone to be happy. I will be competing in the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly at Rio 2016. NK: If I talk about what am I looking forward the most

MY GOALS FOR THE OLYMPICS GAMES ARE TO BE THE BEST I CAN BE AND DEFINITELY TO GET A PERSONAL BEST TIME Nada, you were accepted into Carnegie Mellon University Qatar right before you competed in the 2012 London Olympics. There you wrote yourself into the history books when you became one of Qatar’s first-ever female Olympians. How was that experience? NA: Competing in the London 2012 Olympics was a dream come true. It felt so surreal. Especially at the opening ceremony, you know, holding your flag up high and being able to represent your country, Qatar. And getting this amazing opportunity I think was fantastic. And meeting a lot of world class athletes as well was such a great experience. Noah, what motivates you when it comes to swimming? NK: I am passionate about swimming and it has benefitted my overall health, as well as mental focus and BQ Plus

to in the Olympics, it would be just the entire experience. Competing against the greatest athletes in the greatest competition for swimming. It’s going to be an amazing experience and the experience as a whole is what I’m really looking forward to. As the youngest member of Team Qatar heading to Rio 2016, I hope to set personal best times building towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – where I hope to be on the podium.

I’M A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE POWER OF SPORT TO TRANSFORM LIVES What message do you have for the youth? NA: I have high hopes that my participation in the Olympic Games for the second time will inspire young Qatari

47

girls to take up sports and to challenge the status quo. I just want to inspire a lot of women, especially from the younger generations to be the best that they can be and do the sport that they love, it doesn’t have to be swimming. Just to love what they do. NK: I’m a firm believer in the power of sport to transform lives. If I was trying to encourage young people – it wouldn’t be to take up swimming it would be to take up any sport. Because I don’t think you should push someone to take up a sport they don’t want to. They should try everything and see what they’re good at and persevere. To support its athletes on their journey in Rio, Qatar Olympics Committee has launched the #YallaQatar campaign across its social media channels with the aim of showcasing Qatar’s athletes and their incredible feats. You can follow Nada and Noah’s Olympic Dreams on the Qatar Olympic Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube channels under the hashtag #YallaQatar.

The Art of Mezza by Chef Greg Malouf at the Sultan’s Tent

T

his year, W Doha has created the memorable Sultan’s Tent for the most discerning palates by featuring a station by the Modern Middle Eastern Master who is visiting Doha for the first time. Born to Lebanese parents, Greg Malouf has been a defining force on the international food scene for the last fifteen years. With seven best-selling and award-winning food and travel books to his name, Malouf’s food reflects a deep connection with his heritage as well as inspiration from his extensive travels around the Middle East. Guests can look forward to a unique brand of contemporary Middle Eastern food on Malouf’s Mezza and food enthusiasts can also delight in the selection of Greg’s books and spices that are for sale on his station. Greg is one of Australia’s most influential and admired chefs, and is widely credited with changing the way we experience and understand Middle Eastern food. Greg draws on his classical cooking training in Europe, his travels researching regional dishes and – perhaps most significantly – his Lebanese heritage for inspiration. Greg’s reputation was forged in his hometown, Melbourne where, at the award-winning O’Connell’s and MoMo restaurants, he won national and international

recognition for his innovative food, and a new style of ‘Modern Middle Eastern’ cooking was born. In 2012, during his tenure at the iconic Petersham Nurseries Café in London, the restaurant achieved a second year of Michelin Star status. Then, in 2014, Greg left a mark behind by introducing Clé Dubai, fulfilling a long-held ambition to live and work in the Middle East which with his guidance and skillset has already claimed its place as a landmark restaurant in the region. Since then, he’s been venturing through his extensive travel including his five-day long residence at Six Senses Zighy Bay’s fine-dining restaurant, Sense on the Edge. Cookbooks and media Greg’s reputation has been underscored by a widely acclaimed body of work, co-authored with his first wife, Lucy Malouf. Their seven successful recipe books have won numerous prestigious awards, been translated into several languages and are published around the world. They include Arabesque, a modern Middle Eastern ‘bible’, the food-travel trilogy, Saha, Turquoise and Saraban, and New Feast, a celebration of contemporary vegetarian Middle Eastern food. Greg has contributed to several Australian newspapers and magazines over the years and currently writes a monthly column for Ahlan Gourmet Magazine.

50 years of pure driving pleasure The BMW Group has created a very special car for this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este to pay tribute to one of the most significant models in its history. “Exactly 50 years ago, the 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupe is one of the vehicles which made the brand what it is today,” explains Adrian van Hooydonk, senior VP BMW Group Design. “The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupe as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. The BMW 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements.”

8 BASIC PIECES OF MONEY-SAVING ADVICE

NO ONE FOLLOWS – BUT SHOULD Stop ignoring this financial advice, and you will save more.

G

ood advice can be hard to take – especially when it comes to money. Often, the thing that’s best for us is the thing we really don’t want to do. Saving more and spending less is boring; why do that when you can have fun now? Well, you know what else sounds boring? Working for the next 50 years. There are some very basic pieces of money advice that experts give, but no one seems to follow. So, let’s make a deal: How about we start listening to what these experts are saying? The sooner we start, the sooner we’ll reach our financial goals. Here are five pieces of financial advice you need to stop ignoring. 1. Run your financial life like a business. You should treat your budget like a business because, in the business of life, the bottom line matters. Many of the

BQ Plus

same principles business owners use can be applied to your personal life: prioritize, assess and restrain. Everything that keeps a business running will keep your personal finances in order: prioritize your spending, assess your profits and losses, and don’t lose sight of the big picture, like saving for retirement or getting out of debt. This is fairly common advice, but when it comes to actually saving and making more money, there isn’t a one-sizefits-all strategy. Just like every business has its own unique goals and needs, you will too – so manage accordingly. 2. Make saving part of your lifestyle. Saving money doesn’t always come naturally. Successful savers usually fail a few times (or more) before they figure out what works best for them. It’s easy to get discouraged and give up, but just like exercising and eating well, saving money takes a while to get right. It’s also important

FINANCE | SAVINGS

to remember that a frugal lifestyle doesn’t mean living in deprivation. People who live with less and save more know where to cut back. Even shrinking your grocery bill by just QR 50 a week will save QR 2,600 a year – imagine all the other little cutbacks that are possible. So instead of making drastic lifestyle changes, build your savings muscle slowly by making small adjustments over time. After a while, you won’t even notice a difference – except in your bank account balance.

IF YOU AREN’T SURE WHERE TO START, TRY AUTOMATICALLY TRANSFERRING 10 PERCENT OF EACH PAYCHECK AND SEE HOW THAT FEELS 3. Save the difference. Are you a bargain hunter, coupon clipper or thrifty shopper? What do you do with all the money you save? If you’re like most consumers, you just spend it on something else. The point of getting a discount is to save money, right? The next time you get a discount or score a sweet deal, save the difference of what you didn’t spend.

63

6. Fill a need. Many experts say the trick to making money (so you can save more of it, of course) starts with thinking about others before you think about yourself. Basically, the path to success starts by first identifying a need and then filling it. Your earnings are a byproduct of how well you serve your audience. So, focus on filling your customers’ or boss’ needs, or solving a problem, and you will likely make more money (whether through a raise or increased profits). This concept can also be used for people who freelance or want to start a side business – find out what people want, and give it to them; you’ll be in high demand.

4. Automate the process. This is a piece of money-saving advice that is echoed by nearly every financial expert. Paying yourself first is the first step, which means setting up an automatic transfer from your checking account into a savings or investment vehicle. You can set up one large transfer to go through monthly, weekly or whenever works best for your finances – as long as it’s automatic, you’ll be saving without even realizing it. Some experts recommend transferring a portion of your paycheck into savings, and once you reach a certain balance, transfer any additional funds into an investment account. If you aren’t sure where to start, try automatically transferring 10 percent of each paycheck and see how that feels.

7. Live like a student. No, you don’t have to survive on a diet of ramen in order to get ahead, but you can take a lesson from struggling students everywhere and learn to live with less. If you are just starting out in the workforce, try living on half your paycheck. Since you’re probably already used to living off very little, half your paycheck should be enough to get by. Meanwhile, you’ll pad a robust savings account with the equivalent of a full paycheck each month. For those who aren’t fresh out of college and have large expenses like a mortgage, rent or child care, try saving QR 10 for every QR 100 you make; then, step it up another QR 10 every six months. In five years, you’ll be saving 10 percent of every QR you make; in 10 years, you’ll be saving 20 percent.

5. Save your spare change. We all have loose change filling our pockets or strewn on our bedside tables. Start banking that change, and you could put a serious dent in your savings goals. For example, putting just 2 QR a day in a jar can help you save nearly QR 800 over the course of a year. Some experts also recommend only using paper money for daily expenses, such as coffee and lunch, and then saving the difference. If you don’t carry cash, consider using an app which invests your spare change for you.

8. Trick yourself. Many behavioral economists say mental accounting (i.e., treating different piles of money with different intentions) helps trick your brain into better budgeting and saving. This strategy might sound a little complicated, but it’s really a take on the classic envelope system, where you allocate your paycheck to a weekly or monthly budget and put the cash into different envelopes –one for each budget category. Once the envelopes are empty, your budget is maxed out. June/July 2016
