G-Class

The G-Class: a symbol of distinctive power and iconic style

With its strong lines, unbeaten off-road capability and luxurious interior, the G-Class from Mercedes-Benz offers a blend of values that you simply can’t find anywhere else. After more than three decades of production and technological evolution, it remains undaunted, undiluted and fun to drive. Beneath its iconic design, it continues to combine trailblazing competence with state-of-the-art innovation, in a vehicle that is still crafted almost entirely by hand. But we can’t take all the credit: The G-Class is built by Mercedes-Benz, but it’s the automotive experts and a legion of fans who have covered it in gold – with a continuous stream of awards and accolades.

Heritage: built to last They say success is a recipe for long life. With a production heritage of over 30 years, the G-Class is the longest-serving passenger car series in the long history of Mercedes-Benz. Expect the best In 1886, we put the first motorcar on the road – the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. In 1907, we took the car off-road, with the Dernburg-Wagen, which featured the first all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering. The development of our off-road capabilities continued following the principles of the company’s founder Gottlieb Daimler – “The best or nothing”. In 1972, Mercedes-Benz and partners set out to create the world’s best cross-country vehicle. Its design would be functional, both in its operation and its aesthetic. Its performance would integrate reliability, robustness and capability for military use: the G-Class.

Tested to the extreme The first G-Class rolled off the production line in 1979. Over the years, the addition of electronic driving aids further enhanced its safety, stability and performance. In 1983, it won the world’s hardest race – the Paris-Dakar Rally – with racing legend Jacky Ickx at the wheel. Successive interior upgrades created a cabin that’s now more comfortable and luxurious than ever, but despite all the modernisation, many of its parts are still made entirely by hand. After all these years, its unique character remains firmly intact – and that’s what makes the G-Class a legend.

Take it to the limit The G-Class legend is available in several incarnations. The prestigious G Station Wagon can be combined with a powerful but frugal BlueTEC diesel, a muscular petrol engine or an exhilarating power plant from AMG that will satisfy every wish in terms of horsepower, torque, speed and sound. The G Convertible is the world’s only cross-country convertible in its class. It comes with an electrohydraulically operated soft top so you can enjoy open-top freedom wherever you go – which, in a G-Class, is almost everywhere.

Performance: muscle meets intelligence Effortless power delivery at all times is the key characteristic of G-Class driving. However, in difficult conditions, brute force alone is rarely the best way to make progress. Instead, you need a combination of power and intelligent control. Thanks to a combination of permanent all-wheel drive, electronically controlled traction system, a “low-range gearbox and three 100%-locking differentials that can be selected while driving, the G-Class is equal to any off-road challenge while ensuring the handling safety expected of a Mercedes-Benz on the road.

Design: always in the limelight Bold corners and edges give the G-Class its distinctive form. The look was right from the start and has remained substantially unchanged ever since. This timeless design has secured its cult status in the automotive world and has made it a “must-have for celebrities who prize its exclusivity. Luxury, of course, never goes out of fashion. The G-Class interior offers a striking contrast to its robust exterior. To enter the cabin is to step into a world of sumptuous comfort, combining outstanding quality and workmanship with the most advanced technology.

Each individual vehicle is practically hand-built, as only the hands, minds and hearts of experienced professionals can ensure the special qualities for which this classic vehicle is renowned. The extremely robust frame, comprising sheet-steel sections with a thickness of up to 4 mm, is held together by over 6400 manually applied welds. The frame is surfacetreated and waxed, and all the detachable body parts are meticulously primed and finished with several coats of paint. This means that the G-Class can easily withstand water, road salt or even Sahara sand – as well as flashing cameras.
