Sinister Poster Analysis
The font is made up of sharp and ragged edges, representing both that the film keeps you on edge also the fact the movie involves sharp weapons and ragged objects. The font has splatters and scratchy blood effects around the outside of it, while it’s all red with darker parts showing it’s written in blood, the colour and effects of the font connote anger and danger as well. The blood dripping down from the text also shapes into a noose hanging people, showing that a certain part of the film or even the murderer has something to do with being hung. The bolder and larger use of the blood on the final letter “R” looks to be even more attacked and slashed, helping add to the theme of murder and such in the film. With this dripping blood which shapes into these drawings, they look as if they have been drawn by children, giving the idea that children come into this story as a witness or even a sidekick to the murderer, it could even represent that they’re possessed or even ghosts. The drawing also looks like a family, due to the dress on the far lefts image along with the smaller people drawn below. The faint red in the background of the poster amongst the wall is faded blood, we can tell as it’s similar to the darker, more recent looking blood on top. This faded red shows that this wall has been a scenario of a murder before and it even shapes the face of the murderer “The Boogey Man”. The repetitive wallpaper is old fashioned Victorian style, helping to create this idea of a lonely, secluded house, a creepy location. The darkness around the edge of the poster also connotes and plays around the fear of the dark, making the scene look more isolated and secluded. The blackness also signifies restricted view, as if we’re at a characters point of view and we’re the victim. The tagline at the bottom is also displayed red, yet with a more straightforward font to make it readable, yet it’s bold. This text also reads “Be the first to see the year’s most terrifying film”, which is supposed to pull both the viewers and critiques into the film.
