Designed as a boutique hotel in the center of the Eixample neighborhood of
Barcelona, Spain; Sendero Del Jardín aims to keep a community connection while incasing a very private and intimate space. Tanslated from Spanish, Sendero Del Jardín means, “Garden Path”. To keep the continuity and natural elements of both adjacent parks, a vertical void was created up and over the building. The void would thus create a sense of connection as well as way-finding between the parks. To increase the correlation of the parks and building, natural vegetation was planted within the void. To contrast the façade and the void, natural wood siding was used for the mass of the building, which results in a structure that is better rooted as an extension of the park. A large factor in the design was the development of a Net Zero building. The use of new technologies; including, solar panels, grey water collection and self-heated guest rooms allows for maximum energy savings while also collecting as many natural energy sources. The ultimate goal of Sendero Del Jardín, was to create a boutique hotel that doesn’t interrupt the park, but is cultivated from the site and develops a rich sense of community within the neighborhood. With an improved park layout and facilities, block parties, celebrations, and gathers can now be achieved on the door step of Sendero Del Jardín.

The Innovation Hub program emerged from the initial question, “ What is the future of libraries?”. Located in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago and populated with young innovators, The Innovation Hub hopes to cater to their need for idea development. Computer, meeting and lab rooms in parallel with 3D print labs and a woodshop provide ideal conditions for the creation of any idea. The relationship between traffic patterns and the path of an idea, from conceptualization to creation helped to develop the building’s open core with radiating paths to each of the design spaces. The open core allows sound to travel with the aspiration to create new ideas in other community members. Incorporating a new technology of automatic book storage, such as the system used in Amazon warehouses, allowed for the conservation of space allowing for larger group spaces to be developed.` The long-term goal of The Innovation Hub was an avenue where intangible ideas can become tangible advantages to society. The top floor tops this dream as it provides expansive views towards the lake and city creating the idea that nothing is too small to dream up.

Situated in an unknown forest preserve the program of the Inhabitable Wall tasked me with developing strong relationships between a multitude of functional spaces. A restricted site plan and simple North facing wall created tighter design parameters. Each space correlates to some counterpart whether that is to the right, left, above or below. It is this project that developed my sense of spatial connection, in understanding the smaller connections that resonate within a larger building. Keeping with the site context, natural elements of wood and stone were used in its construction. The desire of the project was to evoke a sense of being within a treehouse whilst inside. This design component was achieved through the use of five large wooden columns, low ceilings and a roof covering of layered wooden planks creating a dynamic shading pattern across the top floor. Ultimately, the relationship of spaces combined with natural building materials achieves an appealing and quiet place for meditation, sightseeing and general peace of mind.

The Overhang is a place for the development of dance. Situated on Clear Pond at Kickapoo State Park in Illinois, The Overhang takes advantage of the expansive views and natural environment to free the minds of dancers. The use of wide windows is used to capture the numerous views as well as providing large quantities of natural light into the studios so as to inspire and connect the dancers to their surroundings. One main performance studio above grade and a more developmental studio below grade create two different platforms for the creation of dance. The below grade studio with a green roof above aims to provide a sense of privacy while still providing views for inspiration. The second and main studio, while still surrounded by vegetation, provides a large and dynamic group space for dance practice and performance. An additional element of this project was the procession towards the entrance. Natural topography is used to harbor the building until the precise moment when spectators are crossing the wooden bridge. It is only when they step onto this bridge does the building come into view.

The House on a Hill program developed my ability to look at spatial connections. Located in Champaign, Illinois the project explored the merging of the spaces in a typical home into one cohesive place. Inspiration for the home came through surrounding structures scattered throughout the prairie. A local barn presented much of the design details including overhangs, roofing, and siding options. Visitors enter through the front door on even ground and immediately are able to see across the open floor plan to the expansive prairie beyond. A step down will lead to the kitchen, dining and living rooms while a left and up the stairs leads to a master bedroom and office. An intermediate landing on the staircase allows for a view over the living room as well as through the double height windows on the rear faรงade. Ultimately the close connections between each of the rooms and the spectacular views as well as an elevated floor plate due to the sloping hill allow for a cozy and comfortable home. An extensive use of hand drafted drawings, sketches and model building assisted in its development.

ARCHITECTURAL DETAIL DRAWING
STUDYING ABROAD IN BARCELONA FOR MY SENIOR YEAR PROVIDED AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY ARCHITECTURE DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT THAN THAT OF THE UNITED STATES. SKETCHES, DRAWINGS AND IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF THE ARCHITECTURE BROADED MY UNDERSTANDING AND CONTINUES TO INFLUENCE MY DESIGN DECISIONS TO THIS DAY. THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME OF THOSE SKETCHES.
