Winter 2014

inter is here DUDE and hopefully an early Spring is not too far behind. A few cold nights compared to what are friends up north are dealing with this winter makes it somewhat bearable. Spring will be here soon enough, so let’s get this Winter ride underway. You might want to throw a blanket on your horse in case we run in to some chilly temps and please make sure they are well fed and have enough water. Let’s RIDE! Gitty Up! DUDE has evolved over our first few years in to a fun loving, wildlife, natural resource friendly type of publication. Not exactly the testosterone DUDES ONLY hunting and fishing publication I conceptualized in the beginning. I’m always amazed at the surprising number of female DUDETTE followers we have generated. I promise we will not bore you with lame contests, best of a particular category voting or mindless paragraphs and lists of places with info of where they are and their phone numbers. What’s creative about that? Let’s have some fun DUDE! This Winter 2014 issue we would like to induct one Smooth Cat in to the DUDE HALL of FAME. The name is BOND, JAMES BOND. License to Kill! 007! No, you don’t necessarily have to be a real live DUDE to get in the DHOF, but there are many DUDES who get credit for the great fictional character, loved by all DUDES, 007! James Bond was created by IAN FLEMING back in 1953 with the original Casino Royale, where the creative writer featured him in twelve novels and two short stories. After Flemings death in 1964, several writers have kept the Bond Legacy going strong. The British Secret Service MI6 agent came in to international prominence with the first Bond Movie, Dr. NO, starting my favorite bond, SEAN CONNERY in 1962. Since then, there have been 23 bond films making it one of the highest grossing film series to date. Many DUDES should be able to name all or most of the Bond Movies, as well as the actors playing Bond. Don’t look, see how many you can write down! The Movies; Dr. No ’62, From Russia with Love ’63, Goldfinger ’64, Thunderball ’65 and You Only Live Twice ’67, all starred Sean Connery. GEORGE LAZENBY was a one shot wonder in ’69 with On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and then Sean Connery came back in ’71 with Diamonds Are Forever. Arguably one of the best Bond movies ever, Live and Let Die in ’73 kicked off the ROGER MOORE era. My MOM’s favorite Bond, stared in The Man with the Golden Gun in ’74, The Spy Who Loved Me in ’77, Moonraker in ’79, For Your Eyes Only in ’81, Octopussy in ’83 and Moore’s final Bond film, A View To A Kill in ’85. Next up was the short lived TIMOTHY DALTON who only made two bond films; The Living Daylights in ’87 and Licence to Kill in ’89. PIERCE BROSNAN, who I thought made a good Bond made four movies; Goldeneye in ’95, Tomorrow Never Dies in ’97, The World Is Not Enough in ’99 and Die Another Day in ’02. After Brosnan’s run, along

Winter 2014

came the much scrutinized, DANIEL CRAIG, who I think has brought the bad ass aspect of Bond back to life, currently has a run of the last three Bond movies; Casino Royale in ’06, Quantum of Solace in ’08 and most recently Skyfall in ’12. All these DUDES come in the DUDE HALL OF FAME for their great portrayals of 007. The guns; the Walther PPK & Beretta 418 are synonymous with the Royal Naval Reserve Commander Bond. The cars complete with ejection seat and machine guns; Aston Martin DB5, Lotus Esprit, the BMW’s Z3, 750iL and Z8 are all more popular cause Bond drove the wheels off them. The Gadgets; Booby-trapped attache case, jet packs, Little Nellie, Poison tipped shoes, Cool watches, the amazing Golden Gun and probably the most iconic, Oddjob’s steel-rimmed bowler hat, all make bond one of the COOLEST DUDES of all times. The BOND GIRLS are all breath taking beauties and too many to name, however some of their character names are quite clever and double entendre d such as; Honey Rider, Pussy Galore, Plenty O’Toole, Xenia

Onatopp, Holly Goodhead and no bond fan can forget about Moneypenny. M & Q! So viva Sir James Bond 007 and all the actors who have played you cause You Da Man this Winter of 2014. WELCOME ABOARD COMMANDER BOND! No issue of DUDE would be complete without the Wildlife Words of Wisdom from our NATURE DUDE, MARVIN BOUKNIGHT, Naturalist at Oldfield. This Winter issue fittingly enough, Marvin set his sights and camera on the Snowy Owl. A very COOL Bird of Prey. Great story and photos Marvin! Thanks for sharing! By now you know how much we love all animals in Mother Nature’s Kingdom here at DUDE and that also includes DOGS. Well, as seen on our cover this issue, there’s one pretty famous HOT DOG here in Beaufort County and he’s none other than Lance Corporal LEGEND, the English Bulldog mascot of the Marines at the Parris Island Recruit Depot. DUDE was invited by the Marines to come pay a visit and meet this COOL DUDE DOG. What a fun time we had getting to meet this very lovable, well trained Devil Dog! A Special Thank You to 1st LIEUTENANT JEAN DURHAM and CORPORAL ALEXANDER STAMATERIS for arranging this exclusive interview. Ooorah & Semper Fi cause dogs are “Always Faithful” and he’s such a GOOD BOY! While we’re on the subject of dogs, one of my long time friends, Dr. REGGIE SIGMON is quite the DUDE outdoorsman. He loves to hunt and usually, DUDES who love to hunt, especially birds, usually have a great bird dog or two. Reggie and his lovely wife, recently bought a German Short-haired Pointer and he teaches us a bit about how to raise a great quail hunting dog, as well as having them as a great pet. I look forward to meeting Lucy and by the way Reggie, Nice Hat DUDE! Since we’re talking hunting, one of our favorite Marines, MASTER SERGEANT WARREN “DIZ” DISBROW (retired), tells the story of his great hunt this past fall with some of our American Heroes at the SCI Wounded Warrior Wheelchair Hunt. You talk about some great individuals that have paid the price for the freedom you are enjoying today, AMAZING DUDES! Thank you for your service and sacrifice! Please urge your favorite politicians, if there is such a thing, to get off their butts and take care of our Wounded Warriors and Veterans. Are they more important than giving the IRS more money to teach line dancing and make Star Trek videos, you bet your ass DUDE. It was great to see them getting to enjoy some well deserved time in the great outdoors deer hunting. Tip of the hat to SCI’s Mark Peterson and all the fine volunteers that make this great event happen every year. Makes you proud to be an American DUDE! Since we are talking about our great Armed Forces, including our Marines, we rode our horses over to the Marine Rescue Squadron, Beaufort Water Search & Recuse located in Port Royal to chew some fat with National Commodore and Past Skipper, the very well known CAPTAIN NICK RUSSELL JR USMC (retired) to get to know this great DUDE a bit better and find out more about the great national group of rescue squadrons that dot our coastline from Charleston to Savannah. The volunteer work they do is very admirable. They have saved many lives, assisted multiple government departments and done good deeds over the past several decades. One day you might be very glad that this group of fine volunteering Americans exist. Great job CAPTAIN! As we reach the pinnacle of our ride this Winter, we must jump off our horses, give

4

them a water break, wet line and talk about fishin DUDE. This past December, DUDE got invited by our friends, TONY ROYAL and DAVID CARGILE, to attend the exclusive ORVIS FLY FISHING SCHOOL at OLDFIELD, put on by BAY STREET OUTFITTERS, DAVID MURRAY, TUCK SCOTT and JOHN HOLBROOK. What a great place to learn how to fly fish, OLDFIELD HAS IT ALL! Now that I’m a certified ORVIS FLY FISHING DUDE, I’m ready to whip some line and chase some tail. Thanks again for the invite DUDES! It was a great education, not to mention, a lot of fun! Most of us Lowcountry Anglers love fly fishing for Redfish, as they are arguably the favorite species to seek here in Beaufort County. One of the reasons we have such great Redfishing in our back yard is our pristine estuary and the amazing help from our greatly appreciated South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. This past Fall, SCDNR released hundreds of thousands of Redfish from Charleston to Beaufort, all these juveniles were raised by AL STOKES and his fine crew at our wonderful Waddell Mariculture Center. DUDE was invited by SCDNR to join them for the release here in Beaufort County at the Lemon Island Boat Landing and it was nothing short of amazing. DUDE, there’s going to be some good fishing within a few miles of there in a couple years. Thank you for all y’all do for us SCDNR! All DUDES love going on enjoyable long rides regardless of the time of year. Being out in nature gets you away from TV and all those electronic gadgets that seem to be taking over our youth’s lives. Do your part and take some youngsters out to enjoy the great outdoors. Can’t get that on a smartphone app DUDE. Not only do you get them out of the house, they get to see the great creations of Mother Nature. Somehow our horses went down the wrong trail when we were not paying attention and we ended up in Africa. Huh? What? Yea DUDE, our trail ride took us on a Safari in Africa. Thanks to photographer extraordinaire, SUE JARRETT for sharing some awesome photos from her recent Photo Safari to Africa. Now there’s something you don’t see much of here in the Lowcountry; A pride of lions licking their chops, a tower of giraffes necking, a coalition of young cheetahs hanging out, a dazzle of zebras trotting around, a flamboyance of flamingos feeding or even a momma elephant protecting her baby. Spectacular animals DUDE! We better get our horses headed back to the ranch before one of those lions put an eyeball on us for dinner or we get run over by some elephants stampeding. YAH GIT UP! It’s satisfying to get the horses back in the barn after this enlightening Winter ride, so we decided to kick up our feet by the fire, have some grub and open a nice bottle of Merlot. Food & Wine are on the horizon here in Beaufort County. We talked with the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival coordinator and long time friend, JULIE FORD MUSSELLMAN about the upcoming event and how she arrived back in the saddle. See you there DUDES along with our Cuban Style, Hand Rolling Cigar DUDES, JOE SWEIGART & JORGE DOCTSCH. DUDE CIGARS ROCK! We also have some delectable DUDE RECIPES including Super Soups to share with you as well. AH YES! LIFE IS GOOD FOR DUDES ON THE RANCH. Of course every issue of the DUDE RIDE ends up with us sharing photos and laughing at jokes by the fire. We got you covered with the Wild & Crazy Harold, Our Largemouth Bass Editor’s Mailbag & Photos to Harold. Ole Harold was a busy fish this past Fall as he captured some shots to share with y’all in our DUDES IN FOCUS photo section. Harold swam in to; The Bluffton/Hilton Head Ducks Unlimited Banquet, the Parris Island Rod & Gun Club Turkey Shoot (yeah, THE DUDE WON!), the Taste of Waddell, Bay Street Outfitters’ Grand Opening, South Carolina Waterfowl Association, Lowcountry Chapter’s Banquet, Six Oaks Cemetery’s Wreaths Across American ceremony, TCL Foundation’s fundraiser Oysters By The Bay and the Bluffton Township Fire Department’s Boston Butt Benefit at Katie O’Donald’s. Whew! No wonder this DUDE is ready for a long Winter’s nap! Great seeing all y’all DUDES & DUDETTES out there! Have a great Winter, Be safe, Be good stewards of our Natural Resources and most of all LAUGH & HAVE SOME FUN! See you this coming Spring when we thaw out! BRAD B. A Perfect Day With

“Snowy” Conditions in Cleveland, Ohio Article and Photos BY MARVIN BOUKNIGHT

y mother-in-law, Linda, knows I’m passionate about birds and photog- ming numbers can crash, causing the birds to migrate further south to areas where there raphy and sent an article to me about recent snowy owls sightings this may be more food available. That’s the best theory right now to explain what’s going on year around Cleveland and all around northeast Ohio. Since with the owls and the irruption phenomenon occurs every 3-4 years. Some we were traveling up there for the holidays, I thought I’d years, like this year, owls have been spotted in large numbers in southern check out a few birding sites online to see if there Canada and all along the coasts of the Great Lakes. That’s summers way up north, above the Arctic Circle, where they pretty odd, huh? breed. During the winter, some birds will migrate south, Well, we left South Carolina and arrived in Kent, Ohio mostly as far south as southern Canada and the extreme early Sunday morning. The temperature was mild, but forenorth/northeast of the United States. In the recent past, casts had the temperatures plummeting into the teens that though, more and more sightings of these large owls have afternoon and for the next few days, so we decided to head been recorded much further south, with some years showing to Cleveland and Lake Erie just in case bad weather would significant numbers of owls. few photos and after watching this little clump of white for a while, we decided to try our luck at another location called Edgewater Park Marina. We looked and looked and finally saw a group of folks peering in one direction and I felt it HAD to be something significant, so we drove around to the causeway and walked out between the lake and marina. Upon closer inspection, lo and behold, Female Snowy there, sitting calmly on a little jetty, was a beautiful female snowy owl! The lighting was beautiful and she patiently tolerated me and a few other idiots, standing together, “ooohing” and “aahhing” in 15 degree weather with a 30 kt. wind. Luck was definitely on our side! The sun disappeared and the cold set in, so we called it quits and hoped for the snow to hold off just a bit for tomorrow. The next day, we changed our plans based on another sighting location and headed off into the country to a little county airport (are you sensing a pattern?) where a snowy had been seen. Upon arriving at this sleepy little airport, we drove around and looked for the telltale white out in the airfield. After about 20 minutes, we located our THIRD snowy owl far out in the middle of the airfield. But the snowy soon realized that a good ol’ southern naturalist really wanted to see him, so he left his perch on the runway marker, flew across the runway, and lit on top of a nearby hangar. He turned and looked at me as if to say “Okay, here I am!” I inched ever so slowly and closer, hoping he would stay still and, sure enough, he sat and looked at me with those orangish-yellow eyes for a few minutes. Then, after he felt he had accommodated me, he blinked, turned, and like a ghost, disappeared behind the building and reappeared back out on the airfield. I just stood there, pondering my good fortune and thanking the owl for his cooperation. After staring a nothing in particular for a couple of minutes, I picked up my tripod and camera and went back to the car. I opened the door and asked my wife and father-in-law if they got a good look at the owl and they both were almost as excited as I was about seeing such a magnificent and beautiful bird. We spent the next hour driving back home with a silly grin on my face, partly from the excitement, but also because it was 12 degrees and my face was frozen solid! It was a day to remember and from now on, when they predict snowy conditions in Cleveland (and, trust me, they will), it will take on a completely different meaning for me! FOWL HUNTING PUPPIES Getting Off on the Right Foot with Your New Hunting Dog BY DR. REGGIE SIGMON

W

hen I was growing up, people often had pet dogs that stayed indoors and hunting dogs that stayed outside in kennels. Nowadays, we more often want one dog that can be a pet and a hunting companion. Many old-timers think a hunting dog should not be a pet. I say BULL. In fact, a combo pet & hunting dog is usually better in the field because they are hunting for you. Also, these canine partners usually stay closer to you in the field, which makes them more effective on today’s smaller parcels of land. This spring, many of you may be considering a new puppy for a hunting dog. In that selection, use both your heart and your brain. Many hunting pups from field trial champions have too much drive and energy to be easy pets. Many of my friends, myself included, have been exasperated by such pups. An exception is NAVHDA champions, which are bred for cooperation with foot hunters. Hopefully, you can see the parents in the field and talk with breeders to find the puppy and breed that matches your needs. Labs have been a favorite because of their great temperament, tolerance of cold and retrieving instincts, however, they can get big, 70-90 punds and they shed, a lot. Many Southern Sportsmen DUDES are looking at versatile breeds that are good at finding upland game, retrieving and being part of your family. These breeds include Boykin Spaniels, Brittany Spaniels, German Shorthaired

10

Pointers (GSP), Griffons, German Wire-haired Pointers, Visla’s, Weimaraner and Pudelpointers. My bias is for GSP’s. Our last one helped raise my kids, hunted quail or pheasants all day (usually beating labs to the retrieves) and became a much beloved part of our family. It was an easy decision when we decided to get a new pup. After talking to several breeders, we found a line bred to be calm, affectionate and close ranging with a strong hunting desire. Nine week old “Lucy” joined our family in October 2013. I’ve had to relearn much about how to raise a puppy, which prompted this article for Brad and his DUDE, winged shooter followers. The key is exposing your puppy to proper conditioning while young. “Conditioning is learning in such a way that the dog thinks he invented whatever you want him to learn.” No matter how tired or frustrated you get “the most important factor to be successful in bringing a young dog along is you’ve got to enjoy it also. It has to be fun DUDE!” You want the pup to join your pack (family) while knowing YOU are the boss. Your dog “learns to learn” during the first 16 weeks of life, so spend as much time as possible with him during the critical first 2 months he joins your family. Punish the young pup LIGHTLY when he does something forbidden, like chewing on furniture. Tell him, “NO!”, when needed (biting, jumping, etc.) and gently correct him. Be patient, consistent and loving.

“When you’re near it, you’ll smell it!” Get ready for the new pup’s arrival. Find out what puppy food your dog is used to and have some on hand. There are many dog food products and I suggest you visit dogfoodadvisor. com to help determine what suits you based on cost, quality and convenience. It is a good idea to have a kennel for your dog’s sleeping. The best locations are in the den, kitchen or garage. A towel, pad or blanket will make it more comfortable. The first night(s) don’t let the pup eat or drink an hour before bedtime and take him outside to relieve himself before bed. Once in the kennel, DON’T let him out until the next morning no matter how much he whines. He will quickly learn that the kennel is home and will rarely have accidents in there. Don’t use the kennel to punish your dog, though is it OK to put an active pup in the kennel while you shower, cook or run errands. After the first year, the dog can sleep outside of the kennel or with you for that matter, but he needs to develop his own identity and self-confidence just like a young child sleeping in their own bed. It’s mandatory to have some toys for your dog to chew (rawhide, knotted rope, tennis balls, etc). You will also need a larger area to leave him for extended periods. I suggest a wire fence kennel. I have a 4’x6’ one in my garage for the winter and one on the back porch for summer. A fenced in yard is great, but an unattended pup can do a lot of damage, also get a retractable leash and start taking daily walks. The biggest project is housebreaking your dog. Every time your pup wakes up, eats or finishes playing, take him outside. Praise him when he relieves himself. Keep a shovel handy to remove “land mines!” After a week of this, our pup had occasional accidents and after 3 weeks, SHE went to the door on her own. SUCCESS IS SWEET DUDE! Socializing your pup is supremely important. Put a kennel in your car and take him wherever you can; store, downtown, friends, etc., but NEVER leave your pet in a enclosed car when there is excessive heat outside. Expose him to children and other dogs. If you don’t want a “cat chaser”, expose him to cats at a young age and he will learn they are to be tolerated. Many of these trips include leash conditioning. Your dog will learn that meeting other people and dogs is fun. Next time we will discuss water conditioning, retrieving, gun conditioning, searching in the field, pointing, sit, and WHOA. “With your informal guidance, a combination of CONSISTENCY, REPETITION, COMMON SENSE AND EXPOSURE, ALL PART OF CONDITIONING, THE WELL–BRED PUP WILL HAVE ALMOST TRAINED HIMSELF DUDE!” For a more thorough understanding of raising your retriever pup, I encourage you to get “How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves” by Joan Bailey. It is my puppy training Bible and is available on line. Have fun with your new member of the family DUDE and remember the time you put in early will have you enjoying your many years of great hunts together in the future. CHOOTEM UP DUDE! DUDE PROFILE: Reggie Sigmon is a physician living in Hickory, NC with his wife and new GSP puppy, Lucy. One son goes to USC and the other son is entering the fall 2013 class. For twenty years he has made annual hunting trips to South Dakota and Nebraska chasing pheasants and whitetail deer. In the spring and summer he spends weekends at Wild Dunes enjoying the low country and saltwater fishing. He also makes annual golf trips to HHI with high school DUDES. He also likes cooking, food , wine, and bourbon—not necessarily in that order.

HOT DOG

VISITS USMC PARRIS ISLAND TO MEET THE OFFICIAL MASCOT

LANCE CORPORAL “LEGEND”

T

BY BRAD MCDONALD

his past Autumn, Master Sergeant Warren Disbrow USMC (retired) and I got invited and ventured on to Parris Island, Marine Corps Recruiting Depot to meet THE LEGEND. I always love being on Parris Island, seeing the pristine marshland and young groups of Marines moving around in unison. YES, THEY MAKE MARINES HERE!. But some may not know that this fine facility has it’s own mascot. The DUDE/Dog’s official name is, Lance Corporal LEGEND. He’s a good boy and a DEVIL DOG! Of course all Marines are monikered Devil Dogs thanks to the Germans back in the 1918 that labeled them this due to their fighting ferocity, “Dogs from Hell” but this pure bred English Bulldog, as we found out, is more like an angel and lives a pretty good life. We were warmly welcomed by First Lieutenant Jean Durham. I have to mention how impressive and clean these Marine facilities are kept, spectacularly is a good word to describe them. YES, I would eat off the floor! Her office was quaint and efficient but I looked around and I did not see a dog anywhere?! Jean told us, “He’s getting his uniform on, he’ll be here shortly!” WOW! Just for us DUDES, no, just how this DUDE DOG ROLLS. After a brief discussion of DUDE’s evolution and how much we LOVE OUR MARINES, I heard a bit of a commotion outside her office. We had to get up and see, was this him?! Well, here he comes rounding the corner like he owns the place. In a way, he sorta does DUDE. This is one fine looking DOG! All groomed up, sporting his uniform, trotting in with his fine handler, Corporal Alexander Stamateris in tow. All the other Marines in the area quickly acknowledged his presence and in the room came THE LEGEND. I have found most all dogs love me and it didn’t take long for him to jump up on the sofa and give us a big kiss after saying, “Hey buddy!” Yeah, this was going to be a cool interview. It seems Parris Island has had many mascots over the years since 1915, when it was a Irish terrier named Mike and LEGEND is now the latest version. Alexander told us of how this DUDE got the name LEGEND. Interestingly enough, they had a facebook page contest and got it down to several choices and as with all Marine

14

Corps groups, there’s a ultimate leader and Base Commander, Brigadier General Lori Reynolds actually made the final choice as it represents what the Marine Corps is to our country, The world’s finest and deadliest fighting force PERIOD! LEGENDARY, for sure! Ooorah and Semper Fidelis “Always Faithful”! Nothing’s more faithful and legendary than a DEVIL DOG DUDE! This DUDE comes from a mighty impressive breeding stock and pedigree. All Southern Rednecks know who UGA is, as he’s the World Famous Mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs. The story of UGA is legendary as well. LEGEND’s grandfather is UGA V. Pure blood, AKC champion! Nough said there DUDE! Actually, Corporal Stamateris is Legend’s well interviewed, screened and chosen second handler. She is responsible for this DUDE and what a lucky dog he is, as she is with him most of everyday. Dogs have all the luck! She sees that he is well taken care of I assure you. Daily bathed, manicured, groomed, fed (Special Hills Science Diet), dressed and lead around by Corporal Stamateris on a regular basis is an enviable way to live. “Where does this DUDE live?”, we asked. “Oh he’s got his own house in Laurel Bay! I get to live with him while I’m taking care of him.”, states Alexander. Now, I’m really impressed with this good boy as he continues to let us give him some love rolling around on the sofa. Laurel Bay for those that don’t know is a Marine Corps Family living community located across from MCAS Beaufort aka “Fightertown.” Spiffy nice digs I would imagine, especially for a dog. Well, this fine Marine doesn’t just lay around at his house in Laurel Bay, he has his duties that he is expected to perform and perform well. LEGEND attends a multitude of events and ceremonies, most notably the Family Day, Graduation Ceremonies held at the Peatross Parade Deck, where this HOT DOG gets to SALUTE the fine graduating Marines (YES, HE SALUTES! see photo), and get petted by all the nice families with children. I can see him smilin for the cameras now. What a Ham? LEGEND as you might imagine, was recruited to do this sort of thing. Ah NO, exclaim these pretty ladies, LEGEND WAS ACTUALLY DRAFTED IN TO THE MARINES OFFICIALLY.

LOWCOUNTRY LIFESTYLES Port Royal, Beaufort & Lady’s Island

You can tell Corporal Stamateris has complete control over this obviously well hand trained specimen of a bulldog, as she called him to attention after his sloppy welcome to us, which we loved of course. LEGEND also makes appearances at the very popular Parris Island Museum. Please do yourself a favor and go see this place and learn the history of the Marine Corps. Artifact and awesome displays galore in this fine “open to the public” facility. Can you imagine how popular this DUDE is at children’s birthday parties and the Marine Corps Ball? LEGEND is the Man, I’m convinced! Of course when we were told that they let him have Pool Parties with lady bulldogs in his own private kiddie pool, well not only is he the man, he’s my HERO! LEGEND is a young stud at about 3 years old and the boy does have a few flaws we found out. Seems he’s not a stud after all, he’s FIXED. Not sure he cares, however! With a lot of pug nosed dogs, they have problems breathing, as well as snoring. He’s actually had a few surgeries to help him with his sleep apnea. Another thing about bulldogs that might not come immediately to mind is that they can’t swim. Their short stumpy legs are not exactly built for paddling, thus the kiddie pool where he hangs out with the ladies, so he doesn’t sink! Corporal Stamateris says it is fun to watch him hanging out in the Law Center Office where his day bed is located, running up and down the hallway playing fetch chasing his favorite toy, a stuffed pink pig with a squeaker. She says, it is equally as fun to watch him when he gets in his element and comes to attention at all functions. Alexander has done a great job of training this DUDE to know when it is play time and when it is GO TIME! You can tell when Legend’s antenna really go up and he changes modes immediately. He really looks sporty in his uniform. We were quickly informed the LEGEND has all his uniforms; Utilities, Service and Dress Blues! This Marine serves and he serves as the public face for this fine recruit and training facility. LEGEND exemplifies the rigors of being one of the Few, The Proud, A Marine. We can certainly see why he is quickly shooting up the ranks with his latest promotion to Lance Corporal. We would like to personally thank the Marine Corps for their service and thank First Lieutenant Durham and Corporal Stamateris for making us feel so welcome and for introducing us to this HOT DOG! After the enjoyable interview, we got to outside and take some photos with this SHARP DUDE. As man’s best friend and a Marine, you know he will be “Always Faithful!”, so SEMPER FIDELIS DUDE!

MY 2013

WOUNDED WARRIOR WHEELCHAIR HUNT BY MASTER SERGEANT WARREN “DIZ” DISBROW USMC (RETIRED)

I

RAPHY SUSAN DELOACH PHOTOG

was waiting to meet the property manager of the plantation I was assigned to such a pristine piece of land. Food plot planting, field cutting, controlled burns, road guide on at the 2013 Annual Wounded Warrior Wheelchair Hunt at Nemours work, stand maintenance and support equipment upkeep are just some of the tasks. Wildlife Foundation Plantation, when I was approached by a great DUDE, DUDES, I have helped out on other plantations, especially pre-hunting season on ParErnie Wiggers, the manager. He asked if I minded switching hunting assign- ris Island with Chief Conservation Officer, Van Horton and his predecessor and believe ments. The other plantation was short one guide for the hunt. Of course I me, it is hard work, especially in the brutal summer heat! Thankfully, Jerry does have agreed, because it didn’t matter which plantation or which hunters I was a 6-person staff to assist him with the various tasks. His wife is the caretaker of the with, it is all about showing our war fighters a good time!! horses and landscaping. (She makes a good breakfast too!) There is one worker, I have been guide for the annual hunt for 7 years now. This one, by far Mr. Samuel Terry that has been there since he was 18, now 94 years old was the most rewarding and beneficial experience. I plan to be part of and this DUDE still works a minimum of 5 days a week. Many times, these hunts for as long as I can physically conduct them effectively. 6 or 7 days a week. Obviously he loves what he’s doing! Now that This year my company, DIZCO LTD CO. Jerry told us that this stand was not a good one for the evening hunt environment and the people of the South. Hey we did it again y’all! do to the wind direction. We sent these worthy DUDES to their stands around This local Plantation is an outdoor enthusiasts’ DUDE paradise! Driving onto the 15:30 (3:30pm for you nonmilitary timers). It was cool with a light breeze and very property you start to think you are in a wildlife management area or preserve, even clear. A great night for a successful hunt, for sure. Once I had them settled in their though it is a private plantation. Forest areas of hardwoods, tall pines and fields, give stands, I made my way to my stand about 16:00. I had to be stealthy and sneak slowly you the sensation of a national park. As I approached the clubhouse, I saw more of to my stand because there was three huge Tom Turkeys in the field. tion. There we dropped off the deer for processing . A good hunt indeed DUDES! In that this is a two day hunt, the next morning I picked up these fine American soldiers and off we went. It was windy and cold! They both had nice stands to sit in and I had a climber stand and was facing the wind. Not exactly what I would call ideal. Unfortunately we did not get any that morning, but that’s hunting DUDE. A bad day of hunting is a lot better than a good day at work! The way this very worth while Wounded Warrior Wheelchair Hunt works is that the warrior can get any deer or animal they shot, mounted free of charge and sent to them anywhere in the country, thanks to the donations of some local taxidermists. The meat from the animals shot is donated to some of the local food banks because it is too difficult to get all the meat processed and frozen in time before they leave by the next day. SCI’s (Safari Club International) Mark Peterson and other hunt management personnel take meat from other hunters in the area that have already been harvested this season and have it packaged and ready for all those warriors who want to take some meat home with them. Believe me, they do not go away empty handed. I told Wendy and Jerry that a job like theirs would be one of those “leisure jobs.” Yes, I said, “Leisure jobs!” Any job where you can work hard, enjoy what you do and are able to reap the fruit of all your hard work, is the perfect leisure job as far as I’m concerned. Jerry said he would not give it up for the world! This is a lot more than a job or career; it is a way of life! This plantation has family owned horses, quail & duck hunting, fishing and of course, deer hunting. They sublease a portion of the plantation to other hunting groups that are handpicked, however, they set aside a special section for family and friends! Just because you have a large property does not mean that it is good hunting property. They are members of the National Wild Turkey Foundation, Quality Deer Management Association and The American Tree Farm System. They help out by donating meat to local food banks and have special sections of the property for locals and even law enforcement to hunt on occasionally. Being a good steward of your property and the environment is what counts. I asked this fine owner what made her start her work with the Wound Warrior Project and the wheel chair hunt. Come to find out, this is the first year they participated and I hope it not the last. She wanted to do it prior to this year, but wasn’t sure how to get started. The plantation has deep family roots that go way back and they have opened their home for others to share. They thoroughly enjoyed this experience because they believe helping veterans is important. I am telling you DUDES that this place is a Master Naturalist’s and outdoors enthusiast’s dream. Wendy and Jerry made me feel right at home. I felt like family and a close friend, not just their guest by the time we left. I look forward seeing them at next year’s hunt. I will definitely ask to help guide on their plantation again, if they will have me back! After the heartfelt goodbyes and thank-you’s to Wendy and Jerry for their hospitality, our two wounded warriors jumped on their waiting buses to take them back to Fort Bragg. Just before departing, one of the soldiers turned to me and said, “I loved it here Diz! Thanks for all your help. We loved it here ‘cause we fell so welcomed. Is the entire south like this?” I said, “DUDES, what you feel right now is the reason why people love living down here in the Lowcountry!” Thank you to all our armed service personnel and veterans for their service and sacrifices that allow us to live FREE in THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH!

MARINE RESCUE SQUADRON’S ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

CAPTAIN NICK(Retired) RUSSELL JR USMC

& THE BEAUFORT WATER SEARCH & RESCUE

C

BY BRAD MCDONALD

aptain Nick Russell is arguably one of the more familiar faces in Beaufort, South Carolina. I have been fortunate enough to have met Captain Nick during these first few years of creating DUDE. Seems like this DUDE is everywhere. I’ve seen him at the Beaufort Sportfishing Club, Military Officers Association Meetings, NRA Banquets, Parris Island Rod & Gun Club Meetings and Turkey, Shoot, Taste of Waddell and various other DUDE events. I thought you’d like to get to know this Great DUDE and learn about the Marine Rescue Squadron’s Beaufort Water Search & Rescue. Captain Nick was born in San Francisco and ended up moving to Crescent City, California. So, he’s a West Coast DUDE originally. Nick has served his beloved country proud. He’s one of the Few, The Proud & Marine. This “Hollywood Marine” as they call em, was initially trained in San Diego in the early 50’s. Marine Aviation was Nick’s specialty and he gave it his all for 20 years finishing up as a Group Maintenance Officer. This is what brought the Marine to Beaufort (47 years ago) as he served with MAG 32 at the Marine Corps Air Station (Beaufort). Thank you for your service Captain! He also proudly served us during his time with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. This lucky man met the love of his life, Sarah and these love birds have been married for 58 years. WOW! THAT’S AWESOME DUDE! Their proud reward is 5 beautiful children, with 6 more beautiful grand children and most beautiful, 5 great grand children. There’s a good example of the American nuclear family alive and well. They happily reside in beautiful Port Royal, South Carolina. Like most retired Marines I know, believe me, they stay engaged and involved as outstanding citizens once they transition to civilian life. Captain Nick is no exception to that rule. He ran his own mobile auto repair business for 16 years. Now deservingly retired, Nick served his community well as past Deputy Administrator of Public Works for Beaufort County and as Chairman of the Zoning an Appeals Board of the town of Port Royal. A State Board Member of the Coastal Conservation Association is also on the resume of this great DUDE. Nick has been saddled up the Marine Rescue Squad-

22

ron/Beaufort Water Search & Rescue for 37 years now and the service they provide our great Beaufort County is in my opinion, invaluable. Locals that are familiar with the town of Port Royal, know exactly where the MRS/ BWS&R headquarters is located towards the end of Paris Avenue, just past The Shed. The Marine Rescue Squadron is a national organization that was originally founded just south of us in Coastal Georgia. I’m not exactly sure if local and visiting boaters know how fortunate we are to have these groups strategically located up and down our great coastal area. There are 10 Squadrons that serve our regional area; Tybee 1A, Coffee Bluff 2A, Thunderbolt 3A, Rincon 4A, Port Wentworth 5A, Sylvania 6A, Richmond Hill 7A, Bluffton 1B, Hardeeville 2B and Beaufort 4B, founded in July of 1975. Not surprising, Captain Nick has been a PAST SKIPPER of the 4B many times over the past 37 years and now hails as the current National Commodore of all 10 squadrons. This Mission of the squadrons is to provide, boats, equipment and personnel to conduct on-water search and rescue and recovery operations within the Beaufort County, SC area. This area of operations includes Port Royal and St. Helena Sounds and the adjacent major & minor rivers and creeks, associated wetlands and marshes, as well as immediate off-shore waters and farther inland rivers. A pretty big area to cover DUDE. These great VOLUNTEERS of this non-government 501-C are there to assist, support and supplement our federal, state and local emergency response and law enforcement agencies on water-related incidents in our geographic area. These great DUDES are on call for the following; US Coast Guard (Tybee/Charleston), South Carolina Department of Natural Resources/Marine Patrol, Beaufort City Police Harbor Patrol, Beaufort County Sheriff/ Marine Division, Beaufort City Fire & Rescue, Burton Fire, Rescue & Dive Team, Beaufort County Office of Emergency Management, MCAS Search & Rescue/Homeland Defense (NCIS USMCAS Beaufort), Parris Island Fire & Rescue/Homeland Defense (NCIS USMCRD PISC) and the Town of Port Royal Police Department. Kinda get an idea of how important these squadrons are to our area. Pretty INVALUABLE INDEED! As one can imagine, Beaufort County Emergency Management could and have

Winter 2014

faced many types of various disaster scenarios; Tropical Storm/Hurricane Landfalls, Downed Aircraft and even large vessel emergencies. Who you gonna call? NO, not Ghostbusters, our great Beaufort Water Search & Rescue DUDES of course at the following numbers; 843-525-1969 or 843-524-6323. In case of EMERGENCY, always call 911 and let the local dispatchers bring out what resources are necessary. It’s nice to know our government has back up provided by an experienced ALL VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION that have intimate knowledge of the local waterways. A pretty valuable back up asset that could end up saving lives and property of the citizens and visitors of Beautiful Beaufort County, South Carolina. One morning this past Fall, I rode in to the town of Port Royal, tied off my horse and sat down to chew some fat with three great DUDES at the MRS headquarters; Captain Nick, Current Skipper, Dick Jennings and Board of Directors member, Henry Robertson. After they gave the low down on how the entire squadron is set up, I had to ask these DUDES, “What are some of y’all’s more memorable calls/rescues?” We were like 4 cowboys sitting around the camp fire telling stories of days on the trail. Some funny, some not so funny. I’ll share a few with you DUDES to give you an idea of some of the situations they have faced in the past. Keep in mind they are ready 24/7/365 and they never know what the call is going to entail. There was a father and son tandem that went out on their newly purchased boat one evening. They had no previous knowledge of our local waterways, tides, sandbars etc. Not a good idea DUDES! Well, they quickly found themselves stuck on a marsh-flat with tide being of little help. As night fell, it started to get real scary, real quick. They sent out a May Day call. Seems they didn’t really know exactly where they were, as they had been joy riding around not really paying attention to where they had traveled. Men where set out and then MRS sent out the order to shoot off a flare. Nothing! As the volunteers, doubled their man power and efforts, a second order when out to shoot another flare. Lo and behold, they were spotted just only a short distance away from the MRS headquarters in Port Royal. Needless to say, they loaded these two Harolds up and eventually got their new boat free from bondage. The story of the lost and highly intoxicated shrimp baiters from Georgia is the funniest story I heard. Two goobers from Georgia, came to Beaufort County to take advantage of our Shrimp Baiting Season with, boat, poles, bait and brewskis in tow. Not sure whether they hammered the shrimp that night but GETTING HAMMERED was mission accomplished. Totally drunk out of their minds and totally lost, so in comes the call. “We don’t know who we are, where we are, what we are doing or where we came from!” probably in a slurred version on our English language. Literally, they were so hammered, they did not know jack! They were instructed by MRS volunteers to spot the nearest light or channel marker and head towards that marker. Understandably, they keep in constant touch with Goober and Otis until they found a lit channel marker on the Intra-coastal waterway. “Tie up to it and give us the number!” were the words of wisdom that saved these idiots that night. I think their last name was Harold. A call came in that was funny at first and then turned not so funny as they arrived on scene. Seems a recently retired Marine and his wife, boating novices to say the least, had ventured up a creek back behind the MCAS Beaufort. As many of you DUDES who have spent time in our local waters know, you better know how far up a creek you can go before the tide starts ripping out and leaves you stranded, waiting at least 6 to 8 more hours to be freed up by the incoming tide. It was getting cold and night was starting to fall, so the resourceful Marine built what he thought was a big signal fire and made the call to 911. MRS to the rescue via dispatch, but what they found when they got there was not so such a funny rescue call of some misplaced

Winter 2014

boaters. Seems the warmth of the bigger than average signal fire had attracted over a dozen cold blooded alligators seeking proximity. The couple had left their stuck boat and migrated towards the center of the small marsh island, now surrounded by Lowcountry Gators! YIKES! Sounds like something out of the Bond movie, Live and Let Die! Needless to say, they were rescued and lived to laugh about it. Crazy but intriguing stories for sure. I had to ask, “What was one of the most scary risky calls that y’all can remember being involved with since MRS 4B’s inception?” WOW! This one will give you an idea that some times rescues are serious, VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS! A distress call went out to the Coast Guard in Tybee Island. SC DNR immediately became involved as the conditions were not exactly perfect boating conditions. MRS/BWSAR joined in the rescue as well. A family who had a yacht was traveling up the Intra-coastal waterway and it had begun to start taking on water, lots of water rapidlly. To complicate matters, one of the members on board was recovering from a relatively recent lung transplant had gone in to a diabetic coma. “It was very dark and stormy that night!”, they all recall. Not only was it darn near pitch black, it was raining horizontally with the wind blowing a sporty 45 knots. MRS got the DUDE off loaded to their smaller 18‘ vessel and began treatment and getting him secured for his next trip. That trip was in a basket raised by the masterfully skilled crew of a Coast Guard helicopter that many locals and visitors have seen cruising the coast from Tybee to Charleston at least twice a day. To be able to hover that helicopter in those conditions over an 18‘ boat, drop a DUDE in a basket, load another DUDE in to the basket and send him up and take him to the nearest hospital is nothing short of amazing. Yeah, these people that are on call to rescue us when we are in need are VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE INDEED! The DUDE survived and sent a very nice Thank You letter to the group to show his appreciation for saving his life, complete with a photo of their half sunken vessel. After talking with these unselfish, friendly gentlemen, I was struck by the fact that these squadrons are surviving on volunteers and donations only. Recently, Beaufort County has helped them out with some much needed funds. Certainly not what they need to operate these types of on call squadrons. Nick told us it costs them roughly $150 hour to operate a rescue boat with all the variables involved. Beaufort County is growing very rapidly and this only generates more DUDES on the water. They have logged over 300 hours in months past with only 4 boats, a command trailer and roughly 45 member/volunteers using their own boats and equipment. All volunteers have received Homeland Security Training and are qualified to save your life. Pretty amazing and just shows the resolve of the great people of the United States of America. Many of these volunteers can be found conducting much needed fundraisers, as well as doing on site educational programs for schools and various other groups and organizations throughout our Lowcountry area. So the next time you meet someone that is involved with the local MRS’s, THANK THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE! Also, if you see that one the squadrons is having a fundraiser, go the extra step to get involved and shovel a little money their way so they can keep up their great work of KEEPING US DUDES SAFE ON THE WATER! Marine Rescue Squadron/Beaufort Water Search and Rescue would like you to know that THEY ARE NOT LAW ENFORCEMENT. They are there to serve an assist in emergencies. Their headquarters is located at 817 Paris Avenue, Port Royal, South Carolina 29935. You may contact them at either 843-525-1969 or 843-524-6323. They invite you to please visit their website at www.bwsar.org/ Please know, DONATIONS ARE ACCEPTED, NEEDED & APPRECIATED! Be safe on the water out there DUDES!

GOES TO

FLY FISHING SCHOOL

Special Thanks

T

BY BRAD MCDONALD

his past Fall we were fortunate enough to have been invited by Bay Street Outfitters’, Tony Royal and David Cargile to attend this prestigious fly fishing clinic. YES, this DUDE likes to fish and I was all in when they called and gave me the details. Being a spinning rod fishing DUDE, I’ve never really gotten serious about Fly Fishing, mainly because my few feeble attempts in the past had my line in the trees and bushes more than in the water. The ORVIS FLY FISHING SCHOOL could not be held at a nicer Lowcountry place than OLDFIELD. Of course I’m a bit biased as I’ve been frolicking around with Harold there for about 11 years now. OLDFIELD’s various ponds, docks, outfitter areas and access to the Okatie River, make it an angler’s paradise. Not surprising ORVIS picked OLDFIELD out of several worthy venues. Many DUDES know about ORVIS. Founded by Charles F. Orvis in Manchester, VT, Orvis is America’s oldest mail order outfitter and longest continually operating fly fishing business. It has been owned by the Perkins family since 1965. Orvis has grown in to a bit more than a mail order outfitters with orvis.com boasting more than 5,000 products with over 11 million visitors a year. Rounding out the trifecta of great businesses involved in this clinic is BAY STREET OUTFITTERS. Many local DUDES also know that Tony Royal’s BAY STREET OUTFITTERS is one of the nicest clothier outfitters in all of Beaufort County. Tony recently moved up the street to their new location on the corner of Bay and West. Tony started Bay Street Outfitters back in 1996 and they proudly represent ORVIS and all their fine products. We attended the Grand Opening of the NEW BAY STREET OUTFITTERS this past fall with our buddy, Cigar Joe and his wife, Elaine Sweigart. See photos in DUDES IN FOCUS. Is that Mayor Billy Keyserling with a DUDE CIGAR! Could not help but mention how good it was to see the Lipsitz family, as it is their old store that Tony and BSO now occupy. Let’s go to school DUDES! When we walked in to the all familiar gorgeous Oldfield Clubhouse, we were directed to the very nicely appointed board room. I quickly recognized the also familiar smiling face of David Murray, a past Riverpro of Oldfield. Seems that David works with Bay Street Outfitters part time as a fly casting instructor for various clinics. Well, I’ve seen Dave cast a fly rod many times in past as you can imagine and I can honestly say, I’ve only seen one DUDE cast a fly rod more smoothly and efficiently as him and the was Lefty Kreh at a previous clinic in Oldfield that Dave hosted. Yea, that’s where Dave honed his skills. Lefty’s the man DUDE! After going around the room and meeting many people from all backgrounds, it was time to get serious and start talking FLY FISHING LOWCOUNTRY STYLE. Dave and his assistant, the equally impressive, Captain Tuck Scott, who works at BSO and does some awesome local fly fishing charters, started talking about our great estuary we are so privileged to be able to fish. Arguably one of the best maintained and cared about estuaries on the East Coast, Beaufort County, SC is about as good as it get DUDE. We even have our very own WADDELL MARICULTURE CENTER that is invaluable to our saltwater marshes health. Picture yourself dropped off by Captain Tuck polling you in to a 4” deep inside marsh flat where bottle-nose dolphin have pushed in a school of redfish. See them TAILS?! Pretty cool way to hang DUDE! Redfish are easily spooked, so if you can be a bit more stealthy with a precision fly fishing cast in front of their noses, all that much better for your success in hooking up. If you’ve ever had a redfish take your bait and scream through the shallow marsh water shooting up a rooster tail, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. WHEW! I get fired up just thinking about it! FISH ON DUDE! Dave and Tuck are great teachers and encourage interaction and questions. The Basics all Fly Fishing DUDES need to know about; ROD, LINE, REELS & CASTING! Fly fishing rods are almost like buying a

24

& car. You can get your basic or you can go for the Lamborghini! Thousands of dollars can easily be spent in the hobby and art of fly fishing, but you don’t have to be an eccentric millionaire to know how to fly fish knowledgeably. Check out some of the top of the line Orvis rods and other equipment at www. baystreetoutfitters.com. Bay Street has the full range of fly fishing equipment from professional outfits to outfits for beginners that include rod, reel, line, backing and leader for under $200.00. We learned that fly fishing for rainbow trout in the Appalachians is a quite a bit different from fishing on Lowcountry salt water flats. Smaller fish, smaller area requires a smaller rod. Fresh water rods could be in the range of 7 1/2’ to 9 ’ with their big brother salt water rods around 8 1/2’ to 9 1/2’. Prices can range from a bit over $100 to well over $600.00 per rod, so shop according to your budget DUDE. The most important thing is the action of the rod or it’s Flex. A good starting size for saltwater fishing would be a 9’ eight weight rod with medium flex or tip flex. It is important to go to a professional shop where you can cast both before making your selection. More tuned in professional accomplished fly anglers can purchase rods that have a stiffer tip flex that generate higher line speeds and have a very sensitive tip that make the strike that much more enjoyable through control and feel. Now that you have your rod, you can really get serious about the LINE that is going to come flying out of those tightly welded loops. Ah the sound of fly fishing line zipping through the loops in search of prey. Music to a DUDE’s ears! The TAPER, SIZE and TYPE of line are all relevant to what size your rod is, where you are fishing and for what species. Taper of the various lines allows for delicate casting with accuracy and ample velocity. A highly specialized fly fishing line has several characteristics. F; Floating for most fishing situations, I; Intermediate for those instances where you need the line to sink very slowly, FS; Sinking tip line that gets down to the fish but with more stealth at fly presentation and S; Sinking for when you want your fly or pattern to get down like the Pointer Sisters to the target fish. Most fresh water fly fishermen will be using 4 to 6 weight line and your aggressive salt water fly fishermen will be in the range of a 7 to 9 weight line, although rod and lines in the 10 to 12 weight range are needed for Cobia and Tarpon Most line is monofilament core with a coating on the outside. Line coating can also be a variable. If it’s a cold winter stream in the mountains you might want to opt for a softer line and when it’s scorching down here in the summer Lowcountry heat, you might want a bit harder of a line. These minor adjustments in line can make a big difference to a more experienced FLY FISHING DUDE. You can usually find the type of line actually printed on the line, so make sure you know what kind of line your casting. Have rod and line, got a have a good REEL DUDE. Two types of fly fishing reels; Mid Arbor and Large Arbor. As one would expect, the Mid-Arbor reels are more associated with fresh water and the LargeArbor reels are for saltwater experiences. Same deal with rods, they are like buying a car. A basic Encounter reel can be as low as $25, whereas a sweet daddy Limited CFO can heads towards $700. Make sure whichever reel you choose that it is dependable and can hold the relatively bulky lines and a sufficient amount of backing. The major differences in freshwater and saltwater reels are the corrosion resistant constructions and the drag system. A very high level drag is needed for saltwater where large and fast fish can take the entire flyline and hundreds of yards of backing in seconds. High level saltwater reels are machined from a solid block of aircraft grade aluminum and can be handed down to generations of flyfishers. Many cool materials are used in the various versions so you can pick a flashy gold or silver colored reel or a more stealthy brown or black tone. Dave and Tuck now had us clued in to the equipment and its wide varieties, but now it was time to Get R Done and start CASTING. This is where the rubber meets the road DUDE. The fly fishing cast is like

Winter 2014

a smoothly honed in golf swing. It all about fluidity of the cast. Less is more, just like in the golf swing. Timing trumps strength. Once you have the Drag and Pivot movement of the elbow working in sync with the wrist, you’ll see what I mean. The Drag is the take away with rod tip heading from down to about a 2 o’clock position. The elbow stops as the wrist simultaneously cocks, all the while the fly stays in continual motion and this is called the Pivot. As the elbow pivots forward to about the 11 o’clock position, the elbow stops as the wrist simultaneously snaps once again, Shooting Line towards your target area. Once your line has successfully exited the reel towards your target and your fly hits the water, Drop the rod tip almost in to the water to get in to Fishing Position. Depending on where you’re fishing, the plane of your cast can vary quite a bit. If you have ample room, it’s best in a more horizontal plane. A more vertical plane may be required due to impediments. Remember, less of a stroke and more rhythm rather than slamming a cast like you’re trying to impress Flip Pallot. Immediately, you’ll want to Strip the line to get any slack out of it. The better you get at casting, the less slack you’ll end up with but always remember to strip out the slack before starting the Drag again, thus keeping the total motion efficient. Hauling and Double Hauling (pulling of the line) at the stop movement in your cast will greatly assist your distance. If you’re fishing in windy conditions you need to generate higher line speed and tighter aerodynamic loops. This can be done with a longer stroke and a faster haul but do not change any of the other mechanics. I can hear Dave now, “2 o’clock to 11 o’clock, abrupt stops with the simultaneous wrist snap, POP! POP!......POP! POP!” He’s a great teacher and Tuck is a pretty smooth operator himself. Thanks for the hands on training DUDES! I may not be able to catch a fish with a fly rod, but now at least I look like I know what I’m doing. Now that you got this down, it’s time actually GO FISHIN DUDE! Tying FLIES and the various PATTERNS of flies is really quite the art form. You can get elaborate with your own designs and materials to work with such as rubber cord, feathers and even animal furs. It is hard to beat the satisfaction of catching a fish on a fly that you tied. Without getting in to all the tying techniques, it’s best to know your target species well. Habitat, water clarity and what it normally eats are paramount in consideration. The technique of Palmering can allow you to re-create a fly, bug, cricket, small frog or grasshopper for fresh water trout and bream. Salt

water patterns such as, Whistlers, Reducers and Deceivers more mimic minnows and bait fish. Lefty Kreh’s Deceiver is the most universal pattern according to these experienced DUDES. Down here in the Lowcountry we are targeting Cobia, Redfish, Tarpon & Speckled Sea Trout, whereas in the Keys, you might be chasing Bonefish, Permit and Snook. Find out what they eat by cutting in to the stomach of the fish when cleaning one. Think like the predator that they are and realize fish are very competitive and will often produce a quick reaction or even defensive bite. It is always preferable to use barbless hooks, as they do the least amount of damage to the fish during releasing and are much easier to get out of your guide or fishing companion. If you can’t go barbless, then bend down the barb on the hook with some pinch-nose pliers. Also remember to put your hands in to the water before handling the fish for release or a picture, so you will remove as little of the protective film they have on their bodies as possible. Have one hand under their bellies to help support their insides that are not used to gravity. A well prepared fly fisherman has all his tools within hands reach (in his ORVIS VEST) and these should include a good pair of hemostats that will allow you to easily get the hook out of the fish’s mouth without doing too much damage to the mouth and gill areas. We’d also like to thank John Holbrook from DUDE FAMILY MEMBERS, HILTON HEAD EXTERMINATORS for assisting us the second day of our clinic when we actually went fishing. That DUDE is a smooth operator as well as well as being the premier fly tyer in this area. On the first cast, I caught a 12 pound largemouth. Unbelievable! You can believe a fisherman if you want to????? Do fisherman lie? Please! After our two full day clinic, David Murray presented each of us with our signed Official ORVIS FLY FISHING SCHOOL certificate and Official ORVIS DUDE button to wear when we are out searching prey. ORVIS and BAY STREET OUTFITTERS have numerous DUDE TRIP opportunities. Getaways to Lodges with guided trips to one day or half-day local charters, so check out their respective websites. Also, the Orvis School is held monthly at beautiful Oldfield from December through July. Contact Baystreet to get information on signing up and get a head start on the wonderful world of flyfishing Thanks DUDES for the invite. Now I won’t feel like such a Harold when someone says, LET’S GO FLY FISHIN DUDE! FISH ON.... GOTTA GO!

SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES

GETN ‘R DONE DUDES!

T

BY BRAD MCDONALD

his DUDE for one is amazed at all the things our South Carolina Department of Natural Resources accomplishes with the limited funds they are budgeted. A perfect example is our diamond in the rough, THE WADDELL MARICULTURE CENTER. If you are not familiar with this invaluable asset, then do your DUDE duty and check them out. General Manager, AL STOKES and his fine group are to be commended for all the do to keep our GOLDEN ESTUARY happy and healthy. It was great to see many of our friends at the TASTE OF WADDELL this past Fall. Spectacular venue, spectacular food, spectacular tunes all came together to raise some funds to directly help AL & THE GANG! David Harter and his great group of volunteers are to be praised for their efforts. Thanks to everyone who came up to me and paid the nicest compliments on how much you LIKE DUDE. Very flattering! SCDNR has recently launched a new website that will be concentrated on marine stocking research and all that is being done right here in the great state of South Carolina. http://www. dnr.sc.gov/marine/stocking Contact, Karl Brenkert for more information BrenkertK@dnr.sc.gov It’s pretty COOL DUDE! You can stay up to date on some of their great work. The good people of the SCDNR were recently involved in a restoring Rockfish release in the Ashley & Cooper Rivers, releasing 16,000 striped bass raised at our Waddell Mariculture Center of course. The long term affects of this program can now be tracked genetically through DNA identifying, allowing SCDNR to know

26

exactly when and where that particular fish was released. Pretty cool DUDE! We local Beaufort County DUDES think more about REDFISH than we do ROCKFISH! Redfish, SpotTail Bass, Red Drum, Puppy Drum, whatever you call them, they are favorite local fish by far, except when the Cobia bite goes off late Spring. The SCDNR marine stocking program recently distributed over a quarter of a million hatchery reared red drum juveniles in the marsh along the northeastern corner of Winyah Bay. These juvenile fish were a month old and approximately 1-2 inches in length at release. Another 150,000 juveniles were released near the Thousand Acre bridge area. Beaufort County was also a recent recipient of one of these redfish restockings. This Fall a bunch of local DUDES & DUDETTES gathered at the Lemon Island Boat Launching area, aka Edgar C. Glenn boat landing, for what was to be an amazing thing to witness. SCDNR was there in all their glory. Ready to release around a hundred thousand of little juvenile redfish in to this great estuarine area. We recognized many of our SCDNR great stewards: Al Stokes, GM Waddell Mariculture Center, Al Segars, SCDNR Veterinarian and Michael Denson, Director & Senior Marine Scientist. “Stocking is a powerful scientific tool helping us to understand and offset poor natural production” says Dr. Denson, who directs saltwater research programs at DNR. Insights gained through stocking advance our understanding of the condition and habits of South Carolina’s red drum. This foundation of knowledge is essential for wise man-

agement of the fishery. Did you know these DUDES can grow well in to the 30” plus range, weigh over 30 pounds and live to be as much as 37 years old? The RELEASE was a great interactive event, as many got to see up close what these little DUDES looked like and were able to ask questions to the SCDNR personnel on hand. The big moment arrived and the truck with holding tank backed slowly to the edge of the water. At the the dock was another transfer to a waiting SCDNR vessel specially equipped to hold the juveniles until they could take them to the particular release sites, up and down the river. There ought to be some really good redfishing within a couple miles of there in about a year and half, where these little DUDES will almost be legal length to keep (15”). A BIG DUDE TIP OF THE HAT to SCDNR! THANK YOU FOR ALL Y’ALL DO FOR THE LOWCOUNTRY! Did you know you can get a GONE FISHING LICENSE PLATE in the state of South Carolina sporting our much beloved Redfish? Surely you’ve seen DUDES with pick-up trucks sporting around with them. The cost is $75 every two years in addition to normal registration fees. SCDNR directly uses these funds to conserve and protect our great state’s valuable marine resources. SHE’S BACK

Julie Ford Musselman & Hostess City Celebrations to head up this year’s

2014 HILTON HEAD ISLAND WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL BY BRAD MCDONALD

P

ast Hilton Head Hospitality Association Executive Director, Julie Ford Musselman returns this year to take over the helm of one of Hilton Head Island’s premier events, the annual Wine and Food Festival. Arguably one of the island’s best events, now has an all too familiar face associated with it this year. I spent some time with Julie this past holiday season to talk with her about how she now finds herself back in the saddle she once rode in years ago. This Savannah native is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a BBA Association Management degree. GO DAWGS! Julie spent time in the Hilton Head Island and Bluffton areas working in the food & beverage sector prior to heading off to Athens. After a few years out of college, she found herself back on the island working for the Hilton Head Hospitality Association. To say this move was fate, well you tell us, as 4 years later she met her husband, Rod and their first date was at the Heritage Golf Tournament. Rod at the time was General Manager of the DeSoto Hilton in Savannah, so the two obviously had a lot in common. Common ground got them married in 1998 and 2003 they welcomed their son Grant in to the world. She definitely has two DUDES in her life! I met Julie when she went to work for the Hilton Head Hospitality Association, as Mallard Productions was helping them out with the official WineFest program. The association was founded in the early 80’s and back then it was pretty much and all volunteer board. When they realized they needed more than an assistant, they hired Julie as full time Executive Director. She filled that position from 1995 to 1999 and she told me, “I always thought I had the most fun job on the island!” Hard to argue you that unless you were me. In the late 90’s WineFest was just a one day event. All the marketing was pre-internet, so most of the marketing was done via print when Julie was at the helm. There were no digital ads, no website, no Facebook page and no ticket purchases on-line. The heralded event was focus pretty exclusively on just wine and it was held at Shelter Cove Marina, which was a great venue with the magnificent harbor and all the yachts as back drops. We recalled one WineFest that was so cold there on the harbor, that attendees and volunteers all had on toboggans and gloves and their was a plethora of locals. Still there were about 1,000 hearty imbibing souls there that day.

30

Julie left the HHHA and moved to Savannah but her knowledge and expertise followed her and she started her own company, Hostess City Celebrations, which she continues to run today. She specializes in organizing special events and VIP weddings. With the large numbers of swanky hotels and thriving tourism climate in Savannah, her business received many referrals allowing her business the thrive and grow rapidly. One of her biggest clients is running the Georgia Governor’s Tourism Conference. No easy task pleasing particular politicians DUDE! She proudly boasts, “I’ve assisted over 400 plus couples in planning their weddings!” Hostess City Celebrations‘ client list is pretty impressive with some of the following satisfied customers; Caesarstone Technologies, USA, Georgia Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus, Georgia Department of Economic Development – Georgia Governor’s Tourism Conference, Georgia Institute of Technology - Savannah, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Georgia Chapter, Savannah Area Tourism Leadership Council, Savannah Downtown Neighborhood Association, Savannah International Trade & Convention Center, Savannah Waterfront Association, The Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity, The Olde Pink House, Visit Savannah and now the Hilton Head Island Wine and Food Festival. When the HHHA was in flux back in 2010-11, she came in and helped the board with the 2011 Wine & Food Festival and she states it was great fun. At that time, the board had many decisions to make about the future of the association and its events and Julie had some client commitments for the upcoming year. So, she went ahead with those commitments and the HHHA eventually dissolved, but the Wine & Food Festival was reborn as its own non-profit organization. 2012 and 2013 were great years for the festival as it repositioned itself. Julie actually had a chance to attend the event as our guest and as a regular person those years. Needless to say we had fun and it was nice to see her enjoy herself on the other side. The 29 year old well attended festival has grown to much more than a simple one day public tasting, which is still the signature event. This great Lowcountry Saturday event now has the Outdoor Gourmet, which is a cooking demonstration area, a meet & greet with celebrity authors, a VIP tent that offers attendees a more intimate experience and the

Winter 2014

great food and beverage industry events such as the bartender’s challenge and sometimes amazing, sometimes funny waiter’s race. There’s also a huge silent auction with multiple cases of award winning wines, dinners, DUDE CIGARS and various other items to bid on with the proceeds benefiting the John F and Valerie Curry Scholarship Foundation. Julie smiles as she says, “This is personally important to me because John was one of my mentors when I was just a young professional in the working world. He took me under his wing and taught me some lessons in business that I haven’t forgotten to this day. He was very giving of himself in education, service and leadership. It’s an honor to work to send students to college in his and Valerie’s name.” This 2014 event coming up will feature all the events that everyone loves; the previously mentioned Public Tasting signature event on Saturday, March 15th, the Grand Tasting on Friday, March 14th at Sea Pines Country Club, which is an intimate gathering of less than 300 people to taste and learn about premium wines (above $30 retail whites and above $50 retail reds). Plus, the week of wine dinners and wine events gives great opportunities to try something different paired with some wonderful menu items from our island chefs. New this year are the Wine Knowledge Sessions being held at the Sonesta Resort. A series of classes will inform and enlighten from everything you wanted to know about Zinfandel to what makes a signature Napa vs. a signature Sonoma wine. (Hint – it’s the soil). There is so much to learn about wine – this fascinating education series will include something for the novice to the more learned wine connoisseur.

Winter 2014

Julie notes, “The board has worked hard to position this event as a driver of visitation to the island in early spring. To that end, we’ve secured a Presenting Sponsor, Taste of the South Magazine, which is published by Hoffman Media out of Birmingham, AL. Their advertising and marketing assistance through their 10 lifestyle publications will be huge in helping us get the word out regionally and nationally. Our island occupancy rate hovers in the 50% in March, so we have room to grow. And as a visitor from Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbia, why wouldn’t you want to come for an early spring getaway weekend to Hilton Head Island. Our weather is great and we have such a unique culinary landscape with over 200 non-chain restaurants. It is the perfect time to come out of the cold and visit.” We are looking forward to this year’s Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival. Also on hand as last year, THE CIGARTAINER, Joe Sweigart himself and his side kick, Jorge ..... will be on hand rolling Cuban style Official Wine & Food Festival cigars at the VIP Friday night event at the Sea Pines Country Club and they’ll be at the signature event on Saturday hand rolling DUDE CIGARS, so make sure you stop by the DUDE TENT. It will be the one with the longest line of course! Come have some fun with us and we know this year’s festival will be a memorable one with Julie Musselman and Hostess City Celebrations running the show. See their ad this issue for more information including their website and how to prepurchase your tickets on-line. We will also have a link to the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival on our website; www.dudesc.com CHEERS Y’ALL!

All the best for the New Year and we look forward to our continued relationship with you and your great publication DUDE. Again, we thank you for your kind support! Sincerely, LARRY MUETHING Dear Larry, We had a blast. A VERY DUDE EVENT FOR SURE! The NEW VENUE, the great food from the DUDES at PALM KEY and all the great volunteers and committee members ALL WERE MAGNIFICENT! DUCKS UNLIMITED is such a great cause as they do care about our Natural Resources. I’d hate to say what kind of shape our Natural Resources would be in without non-government programs such as this one. Everyone here in DUDE LAND thanks you and your local chapter for all that y’all do. All the best for a great 2014 DUDE! By the way, I have your NEW DUDE VISOR, so pick up the phone, give us a call. Sincerely, Brad B. McDonald PUBLISHER of DUDE www.dudesc.com Dear Mr. McDonald The sun was shining, attendees smiling, student volunteers bonding and the Cluster Shucks jamming at the 3rd Annual TCL Oysters and 5K by the Bay on Saturday, October 26! Thank you for partnering with the Technical College of the Lowcountry a serving in kind as a sponsor for this event. Your generous donation of publicity and promotion of the event certainly helped. Proceeds for the event directly benefit our students through scholarship assistance and program support. TCL students work hard to balance family, work and school. For many, a scholarship award from the Foundation make all the difference. TCL offers quality education for good paying jobs in our community, jobs that benefit all of us in health sciences, public services, hospitality, business and numerous other occupations. When you help a student succeed, your investment multiplies many times over as the community gains from the work our alumni do and the contributions they make. Again, thank you for your support by serving as an in kind sponsor for the 3rd Annual Oyster and 5K by the Bay. Your gift is truly making a difference in the lives of many. Cordially, Gloria Duryea/Coordinator Louise K. Mathews/Executive Director Dear Gloria & Louise, DUDE has been a sponsor of this worth while event from the very start thanks from the direction of our mutual good friend, Andy Beal. The event just seems to get better every year and the event this Fall was spectacular. The music and oysters where the best yet. A BIG DUDE TIP of THE HAT, to the Cluster Shucks and Sea Eagle Market. Kind of hard to beat that venue as well. That awesome view looking back at downtown Beaufort with the marina and the bridge is hard to beat and it alone is worth the price of admission. I’m glad we could do our part to help y’all promote this worth while, fun, very Lowcountry event. Yea, this is why we live here. Great people, Great causes and Great surroundings! A hard trifecta to beat. Y’all keep up the good work as we help locals to become more intelligent and skilled in their particular fields of interest. I do believe we have a few photos this issue from this great fun filled event. Enjoy! DUDE looks forward to our continued relationship with TCL and it’s foundation in 2014.

Sincerely, Brad McDonald PUBLISHER of DUDE www.dudesc.com Dear Harold, Do you know most of the US Armed Forces Rules For Gun Fighting during War? I thought you and your readers would like to know and appreciate these; 1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. 2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive. 3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss. 4. If your shooting stance is good, you’re probably not moving fast enough nor using cover correctly. 5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.) 6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun. 7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance or tactics. They will only remember who lived. 8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading and attacking. 9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on “pucker factor” than the inherent accuracy of the gun. 9.5. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. “All skill is in vain when an Angel pisses in the flintlock of your musket.” 10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty. 11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose. 12. Have a plan. 13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won’t work. 14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible. The visible target should be in FRONT of your gun. 15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours. 16. Don’t drop your guard. 17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. 18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them). 19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH. 20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get. 21. Be polite. Be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet. 22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one. 23. Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation. 24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with a “4” The U.S. Navy Rules for Gun fighting are a bit different however; 1. Adopt an aggressive offshore posture. 2. Send the Marines. 3. Drink Coffee. Ooorah! Signed The American Soldier Dear TAS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR GREAT COUNTRY. I kinda just like Sending the Marines and being done with any gun fight. SEMPER FIDELIS “Always Faithful” DUDES & DUDETTES! Signed, Weird Al Shankavic Dear WAS, I would hate to say how many of those chapters apply to my publisher. He should stick to fishing! Some of his shanks in to the water can be dangerous to some friends of mine! Harold Dear Harold, A wealthy lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, “Why are you eating grass?” “We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replied. “We have to eat grass.” “Well then, you can come with me to my house and I’ll feed you,” the lawyer said. “But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree.” “Bring them along,” the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, “You come with us also.” The second man, in a pitiful voice then said, “But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!” “Bring them all, as well,” the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine. Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, “Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.” The lawyer replied, “Glad to do it. You’ll really love my place; the grass is almost a foot high!” Signed, Land E. Scaper Dear LES, You’re a funny DUDE! Lawyers get a bad wrap. I know many that are great people and do great altruistic deeds & acts throughout our great community. Harold
