SUMMER 2016

he HEAT is on DUDE! Nothing says summertime in the Lowcountry like 100+ heat indexes. This heat and humidity are not for the faint of heart, so let’s be careful out there and make sure we and our horses are well hydrated before we start our sultry summer ride. Let’s saddle em up and head out from the ranch down by the river where it’s a bit cooler and there are some shade trees to park under for multiple breaks. Don’t run em too hard DUDE, but let’s get going, we’re burnin daylight. This summer I want to induct two DUDES in to the DUDE HALL of FAME that have been two of my favorite actors for many decades. They played two of the best pairs in my opinion in movie history. The are none other than Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and Henry Gondorf and Johnny Hooker in The Sting. Definitely two DUDES. Paul Leonard Newman born January 26, 1925 and passed on September 26, 2008. Paul was an American actor, film director, entrepreneur, professional racing driver and team owner, environmentalist, activist and philanthropist. Quite the DUDE resume. He won numerous awards, including an Academy Award for his performance in the 1986 film, The Color of Money with Tom Cruise. Newman was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, an affluent suburb of Cleveland. He was the second son of Slovakian Theresa née Fetzer, who died in 1982 and Arthur Sigmund Newman (1894–1950), who ran a profitable sporting goods store. His father was Jewish. Newman had no religion as an adult, but described himself as a Jew, saying, “it’s more of a challenge.” Newman’s mother worked in his father’s store, while raising Paul and his elder brother, Arthur, who later became a producer and production manager in the movie industry. Paul proudly served our great country in the United States Navy in World War II in the Pacific theatre. He later flew as a turret gunner in an Avenger torpedo bomber. After the war, Newman completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in drama and economics at Kenyon College in 1949. Newman showed an early interest in the theater; his first role was at the age of seven, playing the court jester in a school production of Robin Hood. Paul’s first film for Hollywood was The Silver Chalice in 1954. In 1956, Newman garnered much attention and acclaim for the role of Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me. In 1958, he starred in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, opposite Elizabeth Taylor. Also in 1958, Newman starred in The Long Hot Summer with Joanne Woodward with whom he reconnected on the set in 1957 (they had first met in 1953.) DUDE favorite Paul Newman flicks, The Hustler 1961 with Jackie Gleason (Fast Eddy and Minnesota Fats), Cool Hand Luke 1967 with George Kennedy, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969 and The Sting in 1973 where he teamed up with Redford. With writer A.E. Hotchner, Newman founded Newman’s Own, a line of food products, in 1982. The brand started with salad dressing, and has expanded to include pasta sauce, lemonade, popcorn, salsa, and wine, among other things. Newman established a policy that all proceeds, after taxes, would be donated to charity. As of 2014, the franchise has donated in excess of $400 million. In June 2008, it was widely reported that Newman had been diagnosed with lung cancer and was receiving treatment at Sloan-Kettering hospital in New York City. Newman died on the morning of September 26, 2008, aged 83, surrounded by family and friends. He was survived by his five daughters and by eight grandchildren. His remains were cremated after a private funeral service near his home in Westport. Charles Robert Redford Jr. was born August 18, 1936 in Santa Monica, California, known professionally

as Robert Redford, to parents, Martha and Charles Robert Redford Sr. who was a milkman and later turned accountant. Redford is an American actor, director, producer, businessman, environmentalist, and philanthropist. He is the founder of the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. On September 12, 1958, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Redford married Lola Van Wagenen, who dropped out of college to marry him. They had four children: Scott Anthony, Shauna Jean, David James (“Jamie”) and Amy Hart Redford. Lola and Redford divorced in 1985. In July 2009, Redford married his longtime partner, Sibylle Szaggars, at the Louis C. Jacob Hotel in Hamburg, Germany. She had moved in with Redford in the 1990s and shares his home in Sundance Utah. Redford’s career began in 1960 as a guest star on numerous TV programs, including The Untouchables, Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone. He starred in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), which was a huge success and made him a major star. In 1972, he had a critical and box office hit with Jeremiah Johnson, and in 1973 had the biggest hit of his career, the blockbuster crime caper The Sting, for which he was also nominated for an Academy Award. Robert also stared in the hugely popular period drama The Way We Were with Barbra Streisand(1973). Another landmark film for Redford was the popular and acclaimed All the President’s Men (1976). The first film he directed, Ordinary People (1980), was one of the most critically and publicly acclaimed films of the decade, winning four Oscars. Redford starred in Out of Africa (1985), which was an enormous critical and box office success and won seven Oscars including Best Picture, proving to be Redford’s biggest success of the decade. He released his third film as a director, A River Runs Through It, in 1992. Redford also directed Matt Damon and Will Smith in The Legend of Bagger Vance in 2000 and was filmed in Savannah and on the Pete Dye Course in Colleton River Pantation. So let’s salute Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid and Henry Gondorff & Johnny Hooker. Welcome to the DUDE HALL of FAME, Paul Newman & Robert Redford. Yah, gitty up! Nothing says summer in Lowcountry like the 10 days that are the Beaufort Water Festival. This year is the 61st edition of a bunch of fun filled days in good ole downtown Beaufort at Waterfront Park. See their ad this issue of all the great nightly entertainment. Canaan Smith and Locash are headlining the Concert

In The Park, so water your horses down, take off your boots and put on your flip flops DUDES & DUDETTES. We’re going to party like it’s 2016! See y’all there! As we slowly walk our horses down by the river where there’s a cool breeze, I wonder where our country would be without our great VETERANS. Only they know what it’s like to give part of, or even your life for your country, so they deserve our thanks and respect. There is not a better example than the great place that has been established at the Technical College of the Lowcountry, the Veterans Resource Center. Check out the article about this great place and all the great things they are doing to help our veterans, especially in transitioning from military life to civilian life. Not quite as easy as you may think DUDE. Thanks to recently retired, Lieutenant Colonel, Sean “Jimi” Henrickson for sharing some of his time with me, as he is the new director. His experience in being the Executive Officer at the Marine Corps Air Station will serve him well as he guides this worthy Veterans Resource Center well in to the future. Also, check out their ads, as they are starting to register for fall classes and they have a couple great fund raisers coming up this fall. Nice job y’all! While we are talking about our great Veterans and watering down our horses in the shade, our great DUDE friend and fellow (MOAA) Military Officers Association of America Lowcountry Chapter member, Bob Freeman checks in this issue with some interesting updates on HR3147, which is a bill that should have long been passed. For the life of me, I can not understand why our government taxes our veterans on any damn thing, income included. DUDE they served their country and many of them could have died doing so. I think that’s worth of a total tax free exemption on every tax that our government sucks out of us. Thanks for keeping us up to date Bob. It does sounds like there is progress being made on that front. TAX AMNESTY FOR OUR GOD BLESSED VETERANS DUDE! Let’s mount back up and DUDES. Always make sure your darlin and/ or cowgirls are properly mounted up safely first. I hate to see a DUDE with no manners and respect for women. Chivalry! Is it dead DUDE? Well, let’s just say it’s wounded, but with a little properly directed respect, I believe all those cowgirls out there might be willing to cook you and nice meal and pour you a cold one. Who knows, she might even take your boots off and rub your feet if you treat her with respect. Pay attention out there DUDES and be a southern gentlemen, like yo Mama told ya. Enjoy my article on the subject of Chivalry! All of us DUDES carry guns out on the trail. That’s just how we roll, but we also carry our fly rods DUDE. This past spring we were fortunate enough to be invited by Tony Royal of Bay Street Outfitters to come to their annual Fly Fishing Expo held in beautiful OLDFIELD plantation. Great to see many of BSO’s fine group of Captains who are some of this areas finest anglers and fly fishers. A big tip of the hat to OLDFIELD executive chef, Jason Winn for throwing down some awesome chow for our lunch. Ah yes, fly fishing in the Lowcountry, Don’t get much better than that DUDE. I hope your rod gets bent this summer. Sometimes when we’re out riding our horses around in the beautiful Lowcountry, we often forget about 2
the beautiful High Country we have here in the great United States of America. Well, one of our favorite wildlife photographers, Sue Jarrett took her camera and headed out to the Rocky Mountain National Park and got some great shots to share with us. Enjoy her article this issue and make sure all you aspiring wildlife photographers out there check out some of the trips she has planned in the upcoming year. I think she’s taking a group to Texas and to Africa, so if you go, share some of your photos with us. Thanks for sharing Sue! The Lowcountry History Trail is a pretty cool one indeed. We love stopping by many of our great historical sites we have here in the Lowcountry. It gives us a chance to rest our horses and we get to learn about how this beautiful place we love to call home and how it came to become what it is today. Without a doubt one of my favorite stories is the story of the Spanish colony of Santa Elena in 1566. Hard to believe it was located on modern day Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Thanks to the hard work of Dr. Andy Beall, Megan Meyer and the many volunteers, THE SANTA ELENA HISTORY CENTER has become reality and is NOW OPEN. You must ride your horses over there and check this place out located in the old federal courthouse on Bay Street, downtown Beaufort. Check out their article this issue and peruse the many ongoing year round programs they are now offering, so you can learn about what was actually going on around here 450 years ago. Pretty cool stuff DUDE! Oh and don’t forget to REELECT PEDRO MENENDEZ for governor! Fill in this blank DUDE, BLANK, hot dogs, apple pie and chevrolet. That’s right DUDE, the summer time passage that is baseball, is back in the Lowcountry. First of all, congratulations to those DUDES up the road at Coastal Carolina for bringing home the College World Series. WOW! What a Cinderella story that was! All young DUDES who are serious about playing baseball need an outlet to progress and have upward mobility. Well, thanks to our good friends at the American Legion Post 9, they have brought back legion baseball to the Lowcountry. They have junior and senior programs now and if your young buck is interested in being an Osprey, then check out our article this issue and get them signed up. LET’S PLAY BALL DUDE! It’s pretty hot out there DUDES, so we better turn our horses back towards the ranch before we run them too hard. Of course, as we slowly walk them back to the barn, we like to check y’all out and see how smart y’all are with the DUDE QUIZ. Intriguing questions about Newman and Redford’s movies. Yep as usual, if you get all the answers right, call me, I’ll buy you a cold one. There are a few good shows coming to our area this summer, so make sure you check out the DUDE THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT calendar. Sir Elton John, Dave Matthews Band, Carrie Underwood and the Zac Brown Band are all in the hood, so ride on in and check them out with your sweetie. Now that we got horses back to the ranch, have them well watered and brushed down, it’s time to eat some grub DUDE. COOKING DUDE STYLE checks in the summer with some great recipes for those fantastically fresh southern vegetables. My MOM and I have cooked these recipes many a time, so they are DUDE GUARANTEED fo sho. They be more better than good! Enjoy! Ass in the front porch swing, cold beer in one hand, DUDE cigar in the other and it’s time kick back and laugh and enjoy life for a while. Well, our crazy Largemouth Bass Editor, Harold always delivers with his wild and crazy HAROLD’S MAILBAG. That is one funny fish DUDE! I enjoyed seeing many our of friends out there on the trail this past spring, so check out HANGIN WITH THE DUDE and see where I’ve been and who I was hanging out with here in good ole Beaufort county. I’m slap worn out, so it’s time to end the great hot summer DUDE ride by reminding you to be vigilant out there. See something, Say something DUDE. I wasn’t really sure how much that article we had in the spring issue about what to do during an active shooting situation would be so pertinent. Also, don’t forget to be a gentleman and mind your manners and be chivalrous to the ladies out there. Finally, be thankful for the things GOD has blessed you with and do your part by blessing and helping those less fortunate that you are, cause they’ll appreciate it and you’ll feel better about yourself. SEE Y’ALL THIS FALL! STAY COOL DUDES BRAD B. MCDONALD PUBLISHER DUDE WWW.DUDESC.COM • BRAD@DUDESC.COM • 843-298-3827 A SPECIAL THANK YOU to our GREAT DUDE FAMILY of ADVERTISERS, because without them, this DUDE RIDE does not happen. VETERANS EDUCATION AND SERVICES ★ ★ ★ TECHNICAL COLLEGE OF THE LOWCOUNTRY IT’S WORKING DUDE
★★★
BY BRAD MCDONALD
N
obody deserves more respect as Americans than our Veterans. Many of us will never know what it is like or what it means to serve our country and GIVE ALL TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY and be willing to GIVE ALL FOR OUR FREEDOM. A fantastic example of paying respect and helping our veterans is by assisting them in making the often difficult transition from the military to civilian life. In the fall of 2014, DUDE brought you information about the Transitioning Military Training Program, which was established at the Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL) through the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Paul Merritt, USMC (Retired) and the help of Gunny Sergeant Michael Weiss, USMC (Retired). The initial focus was simply providing a means for military aircraft mechanics to attain their FAA Airframes and Powerplants License and ultimately employment with one of the aviation giants such as Boeing or Gulfstream. The initial cadre of instructors on the team were our long-time friend Master Sergeant Warrren Disbrow, USMC (Retired) and Navy Veteran Peter Semetis who is now the Director for the Aviation Professional Programs. As time has passed, the programs and resources available to TCL’s veteran students have
4
grown significantly. The most noteworthy addition to the program is the VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER (VRC). Christina Welsch-Copeland, an Army veteran, serves as the Veteran Student Services Coordinator and is responsible for day to day operation of the center along with mentorship of the Student Veterans Association (SVA). This invaluable facility opened on Veterans Day last year and is assisting many with the mission of providing assistance and coordination of veterans’ education benefits, admissions, registration, financial aid and transition resources to active duty service members, veterans, and their families. The VRC has helped disabled student veterans understand their rights and ensure they are well-informed regarding accommodations based on disability – (service dogs, additional time on tests, seating placement in class, etc.) The VRC is state funded and assisted via grants, most significantly from an unbelievable organization - the Palmetto Warrior Connection. A note on the SVA – the chapter was established in January of this year and is already the largest student group in TCL history. Keep an eye on this one DUDES, they are a great organization that will be an influential group here in the Lowcountry. Continued on page 6

A year or so ago we introduced to you a DUDE that we met at a Professional Military Education event at the Officers Club on Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort. He is none other than Lieutenant Colonel Sean “Jimi” Henrickson, USMC (Retired). Sean was the Executive Officer of the Marine Corps Air Station and now after 22 years of service to our country, he has retired and is transitioning in to civilian life as the new Director of Military Education & Training. The Aviation Professional Programs portion at TCL now proudly boasts both the Airframes & Powerplants (A&P) FAA License Prep Course and the FCC Avionics License Prep Course. Both are college-level credit programs that help students attain an Associates Degree in General Technology. To date, they have run 15 A&P courses for 142 students and 12 FCC courses for 112 students. Additionally, they are offering Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) and Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) programs, which are part of continuing education and are certificate programs that do not earn college credit. In the near future, the available programs will continue to grow in order to best support the transitioning military in the Lowcountry, as well as to develop the workforce in TCL’s four county service area. While aviation maintenance training was the foundation of the program, they foresee the EMT Bridge program targeting the Navy Corpsman and Army/Air Force Medics as the next important step. Additionally, expanding into additional logistics certifications, licenses and eventually an Associates Degree in Logstics will be crucial in support of maritime port development and expansion in the region. I would like to share a couple success stories with y’all. One is, Sergeant Clinton Grigsby, USMC. After five years in the Marine Corps, F/A-18 Powerline Mechanic at MCAS Beaufort, he earned his FAA Airframes & Powerplant License through TCL in 2014 and subsequently was hired at Boeing’s Charleston facility on the assembly line. Clint has already been promoted to Manufacturing Manager at the Boeing Company. Another success story is Gunny Sargent Jeff Hardin, USMC (Retired). Jeff also went through the same program at TCL in 2015 and was hired as a contractor by Gulfstream Savannah. He presently works for Wyle (Defense Contractor) aboard MCAS Beaufort as the F/A-18(A-F) & EA-18G FST Maintenance Readiness Team Field Engineer. Great job DUDES! If you would like to get involved, help and meet some of our great veterans, they have a couple great fundraising events coming up (See Ads), A 5K Run and an Oyster Roast. TAX BREAK FOR MILITARY RETIREES WILL MAKE SOUTH CAROLINA MORE ‘VETERAN FRIENDLY,’ GOOD FOR JOBS, ECONOMY BY BOB FREEMAN (MOAA LOW COUNTRY CHAPTER LEGISLATIVE LIAISON)
M
inutes before legislative Session 121 ended in early June, South Carolina’s General Assembly passed legislation granting a partial state income-tax exclusion for military retirees and their surviving spouses. “Spouse?”, You ask, “How PC!” Nope, that’s been the standard military term for wife or husband since waaay back when—even when wives were only barely, grudgingly tolerated by much of the military hierarchy: e.g.,“If the Army wanted you to have a wife, they’d have issued you one!” To give an air of official status to our under-appreciated spouses (and after looking around to confirm they were not in earshot), some of us Army guys referred to them as the “spousal unit.” This law obviously will benefit the Palmetto State’s military retirees and spouses—they’ll have more “walking-around” money as their state income tax break is phased-in over the next five years. Retirees under age 65 could get a $17,500 deduction on earned income, if they take a post-military job paying at least that much in the state, and there’s a $30,000 exclusion for those 65 and older, but without an employment requirement. The deduction is available to the spouse, widow or widower. “Hold everything,” you say. “I couldn’t care less about this tax stuff for military retirees! How come this kinda stuff is in DUDE?” DUDE Publisher, Executive Editor and Chief Bottle-Washer Brad McDonald. Brad thought that DUDE readers would want to know that veterans and pro-military legislators, among others, have been working behind-the-scenes to improve South Carolina’s economic future. Brad and I both belong to the Beaufort-based, Low Country Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). MOAA is a key veterans’ service organization in South Carolina, which for the past decade has championed legislation for a full state tax exemption for military retirees. Brad knows that MOAA’s South Carolina Council of Chapters, along with other local veterans’ groups and military supporters in and out of the Statehouse in Columbia have been pushing long and hard to put South Carolina on an equal footing with nearby states. In fact, 26 states don’t levy state tax on military retirees or don’t have a state income tax; a few others offer other attractive benefits to retirees who bring technical training, experience, discipline and years of valuable future productivity following military service. Most backers agree there’s a lot to like in the legislation that passed, especially as a basis for further action next session. Truthfully, focusing narrowly on the income tax break is shortsighted.
8
Military retirees don’t receive a “pension,” like civilians. It’s called “retired PAY” for a reason. It‘s more akin to a “retainer”; by US law, retired solders are mobilization assets for LIFE! They can be recalled to active duty anytime (however, it’s unusual, but not unheard-of, to be recalled more than five years after retirement or after 60 years of age). Folks who make a career of the military are called “lifers” for a reason! South Carolina is home to some 58,000 military retirees and many tens-of-thousands more veterans. The economic impact of the US military on the Palmetto State is about $19 billion annually. There’s a Military Base Task Force in our state’s Commerce Department, with a chairman appointed by the governor. The task force helps keep bases open and works to retain and create military-related jobs. A retiree tax break demonstrates South Carolina’s “military friendliness.” We’ve been counting on this to help “bullet-proof” military staffing and civilian jobs on South Carolina bases, when Washington’s next Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) convenes. Keeping our active duty military personnel “inplace” and encouraging them to relocate here from other states, helps build a stable, trained, skilled future-oriented workforce. It’s no secret that our vibrant, 21st Century aviation, automotive and defense manufacturing industries, among our many enterprises, are looking for retirees’ and veterans’ leadership, technical and logistical abilities, experience, character and strong work ethic. This is also the kind of workforce that attracts more and more business. A number of private and public programs specifically aim to funnel trained, skilled, experienced military members into civilian jobs in South Carolina. Beaufort’s Technical College of the Low Country has great examples (some featured in DUDE, naturally). One is a program that helps military aviation technicians earn US civil aviation credentials, such as the FAA’s Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic certification required for well-paying jobs in industry. What about the $18 million annual loss from not fully taxing military retired pay? “Asked and answered,” says Bluffton attorney Bill Bethea, Chairman of the state’s Base Task Force, “Exhaustive studies show the benefits outweigh costs. Taxes on military retirees’ and spouses’ new jobs in South Carolina compensate for lost revenue—and then some.” He added that there are benefits to local communities that are harder to quantify; particularly, military retirees are law-abiding, conscientious, committed to service and inveterate volunteers—not to mention, willing to serve America and Americans for LIFE!

The early definition of the word originated via the medieval times late 1100’s to early 1200’s as it pertained to the code of conduct for knights, serving in knighthood during the Holy Roman Empire. Chivalry morphed out of the Moors and Teutonic forests and soon was nurtured in to civilization by the GOD BLESSED Catholic Church. The pronouncedly masculine virtues of chivalry came under attack on the parts of the upper-class suffragettes campaigning for gender equality in the early 20th century, and with the decline of the military ideals of dueling culture and of European aristocracies in general following the catastrophe of World War I, the ideals of chivalry became widely seen as outmoded by the mid-20th century. As a material reflection of this process, the dress sword lost its position as an indispensable part of a gentleman’s wardrobe, a development described as an “archaeological terminus” by Ewart Oakeshott, as it concluded the long period during which the sword had been a visible attribute of the free man, beginning as early as three millennia ago with the Bronze Age sword. During the 20th century, the chivalrous ideal of protecting women came to be seen as a trope of melodrama (“damsel in distress”.) The term chivalry retains a certain currency in sociology, in reference to the general tendency of men, and of society in general, to lend more attention offering protection from harm to women than to men, or in noting gender gaps in life expectancy, health, etc., also expressed in media bias living significantly more attention to female than to male victims. Fast forward to the later 1900’s, Chivalry was more adorned meaning LADIES FIRST DUDE, never forgetting it’s Christian evolution. My parents raised me as a hillbilly country ass boy to always pay respect to my elders and for the most part I have pretty much been a very respectful white heterosexual male with these instilled values. (Nothing against women, African-Americans and/or gays, just who I am DUDE!) I would like to send this message out to the young legal American DUDES out there, BE CHIVALROUS DUDE! WOMEN should be respected and treated properly and equally. Pay attention and get your face off your smartphone for a second and pay attention to your physical surroundings. You DUDES look like robots walking around and from what I’ve witnessed, women don’t even expect y’all to be chivalrous any more. Pretty sad INDEED! I hate to talk politics however ALL ARE CREATED EQUAL, therefore ALL SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME, WITH RESPECT PERIOD! Apply it to everything in LIFE! Someone who champions themselves as a spokesperson representing women and gays, should not be taking money from countries/ideologies that treat women and gays as, well, not equal. (Stoned to death, can’t drive a car, go out without a dude in public, vote, etc. and being gay to them equals death) Islam/Muslims/Sharia do not give women and gays equal respect whatsoever, so be careful who you think should lead us for the next 4 years. Does the words, SOLD OUT come to mind? Beware of politicians that suffer from Alexithymia because you will end up their victim. SORRY DUDES & DUDETTES, these GREAT UNITED STATES of AMERICA were founded on CHRISTIAN VALUES, not islamic values. IN GOD WE TRUST, not in allah we trust. VIVA the CHRISTMAS TREE!

A few anecdotal situations that happened to me over the last few months kind of brought this article about Chivalry to mind. The first time my light bulb went off was when a little Harold had a chance to open a door for a woman and he was so in to his smartphone, he actually let the woman open the door for him. He never looked up or said thank you. I went up to the young harold and said, DUDE you should’ve held the door for that lady. He looked up and said nothing and gave me this blank void look. Boy sure made me feel good about our future, LOL! I honestly wanted to kick his little ass DUDE! Another incident was when I was walking in to my bank and I properly noticed and elderly lady slowly but surely struggling to get up the stairs and to the door. Well, being the DUDE that I am, I opened the door, made eye contact and kindly said, “After your Ma’am!” She responded, “Go ahead, I’m moving a little slow today.” I smiled and said, “Darlin, I got time, come on!” The smile on her face was priceless. As she kindly thanked me, touched me on the hand and said, “Well I guess Chivalry is not dead after all!” I laughed and said, “It’s always been alive and well here in the SOUTH!” A simple gesture that was much appreciated and made me feel good, but made me realize, it had probably been a while since some DUDE opened the door for that sweet lady. Start paying attention to someone other than yourself DUDES. The last occurrence that I like to share was when I was heading in to Wal-Mart on Hilton Head Island. As I got out of my truck and started heading towards the entrance, I noticed an elderly lady wondering around aimlessly looking miffed and very perplexed about something. I, being a Chivalrous DUDE, kindly walked up to her and said, “Darlin do you need some help with something?” She replied, my husband has a truck like yours and he got in a wreck last week and he’s not doing that well.” I told her I was sorry to hear that and consoled with her about how hectic traffic is nowadays, but it seemed something else was bothering her. “Are you OK Ma’am?” I cordially inquired. She says, “You’re such a nice young man, but it seems I don’t remember where I parked my car!” Well DUDE, I was pretty sure I could help her solve this problem. LOL What kind of car do you have my dear? A blue Honda! I quickly walked and scanned the immediate 3 rows of parking and said, “Honey, I don’t see it, do you have your keys?” After a short struggle she dug them out of her substantial purse, “Here they are!” she exclaimed. I grabbed them and hit the PANIC BUTTON and off goes her horn four rows way on the other side of the parking lot. “There it is!, come on darlin I’ll walk you over there!” I made sure she got settled in and I went inside after telling her I was going to check on her when I came back out. Well, I did and there she was still in her car. I kindly walked over and tapped on her window and she rolled it down and said I finally got the AC running. GOD BLESS HER DUDE! I gave her a copy of DUDE to read and give to her husband while recovering from his accident. The best part was when she said, “Thank you so much, you are kindest young man!” Yeah DUDE, that’s why you need to start paying attention to your surroundings and respect and appreciate your elders and those less fortunate than you are DUDE. One thing I cal tell you DUDE, after all those moments of CHIVALRY, I kind of felt good about myself and had a little bit extra hitch in my gitty up. I wish I saw more of actions like this from you self-proclaimed millennials out there. BE A MAN AND BE CHIVALROUS DUDES!

BEST OUTDOOR AND TRAVEL CLOTHING ON THE PLANET
BY BRAD MCDONALD
T
his past spring DUDE attended a great outdoor fly fishing expo in OLDFIELD, put on by our good friends at Bay Street Outfitters. Over a hundred DUDES & DUDETTES came to OLDFIELD for a day of presentation, seminars, demonstrations, activities and even some one on one fly casting instruction from some of the Lowcountry and Southeast’s premier fly fishing instructors, guides and professionals such as; Captain Dave Murray, Orvis-endorsed Fly Casting Instructor, Captain David Cargille, FFF Fly Casting Instructor, Captain Tuck Scott, Orvis-endorsed Fly Fishing Guide, Captain Owen Plair, Orvis-endorsed Fly Fishing Guide, Captain Jason Dubose, OLDFIELD Riverpro and Tony Royal, Fly tying master. The very energetic crowd of all experience levels got hands on personalized instruction from some of this area’s masters. Various tactics were practiced and taught that assisted in gaining distance and accuracy on your fly casts. There also was a large selection of demos (rod and reels) from Orvis and Sage. If you are a local DUDE that has a passion for Fly Fishing, then you need to get on over to Bay Street Outfitters and check out their eclectic collection of fly tying materials, Orvis rods n reels and certainly some of the best outdoor clothing on the planet. Please inquire about their red-fishing schools and about their great Lowcountry fishing charters by some of the above mentioned masters. If you’re interested in gathering every month with a group of like minded fly fishing DUDES then you need to join us starting back up in September for the Sea Island Fly Fishers. Great speakers, great food, great camaraderie and there might even be a cold beer in a cooler some where. ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTOS AND ARTICLE BY SUE JARRETT
I
is home to bighorn sheep, elk, moose, pronghorns, and mule deer, as well as many birds and small animals. In late September and October, RMNP is famous for elk bugling and mating out in fields. If you are interested in going to Colorado, flying there and renting a car is easy. Also there are many motels and condos in the Granby area to help drive south to Mt. Evans and drive north to RMNP early in the morning. If you are interested in photographing birds, I have a trip set up for south Texas April 1926, 2017. Two ranches have numerous blinds to get great photos, and a bunkhouse, meals and Happy Hour is included. If you are also interested in photographing lions, cheetahs, rhinos, elephants, baboons, monkeys, flamingos, cranes and lilac-breasted rollers, I have a trip set up for only 18 people in Kenya and Tanzania November 2-17, 2017. To find about these tours check my website at http://www.suejarrett.com/wildlife-trips.html Prices are great!! HAPPY SHOOTING!
f you are going to Colorado to see and photograph wildlife, the best times to go are June and September/October, and the easiest places to go are Mt. Evans near Denver and Rocky Mountain National Park. Mt. Evans is 60 miles west of Denver and off I-70. Because of snowing, it is sometimes open only from May 30 to Labor Day – early in September. In June many animals are seen in Mt. Evans on its 14 mile drive up to the top. This is a narrow winding road, so going slow for safety is also great to find wildlife. Rocky Mountain National Park is north of Denver, and the Estes Park entrance is 64 miles north of Denver. Although Estes Park is a nice place to stay, I prefer entering RMNP on the west side from Granby. That is the area for moose in particular. Many people say that the eastern side near Estes Park is the best area, but I think because too many people are there they scare away wildlife. I don’t see as much in that area as in the west area. Mt. Evans is home to marmots, pikas, mountain goats and traveling bighorn sheep in June, as well as many birds and other small animals. RMNP

Cactus Throne: Maximilian and Carlota’s Mexico A tragic story largely unknown in the history of the Americas, this program details Napoléon III’s intrepid scheme to install Maximilian von Habsburg as emperor of Mexico, through the three years following, and the effort’s end in disaster for France and for Maximilian and Carlota. The empire’s violent collapse is one of the most spectacular personal tragedies and political failures of the 19th century, ending with the execution of Maximilian by firing squad and Carlota on the brink of madness. Even with the lives lost and the bloodshed, Maximilian’s short reign helped usher in a new era of national unity for Mexico, and it remains an important part of Mexican history. Captain William Hilton Visits Santa Elena In the early 16th century European explorers took shelter in Port Royal Sound from heavy seas and strong winds. The Spanish called the region Santa Elena because they discovered it on the feast day of Saint Helena. The French called the harbor Port Royal because it exceeded all others they had seen in “size and beauty.” France was the first European country to try to settle the area by building a fort on what is now Parris Island and when they abandoned it, the Spanish followed by establishing Santa Elena—a settlement that lasted for 20 years. In 1663, almost 100 years after the Spanish had started their settlement, an Englishman—Captain William Hilton, who had been commissioned by settlers in Barbados to explore the Carolina coast for a suitable site for a colony—entered Port Royal Sound. As he did so he noticed a high bluff or headland on an island that could serve as a navigational marker and called it Hilton’s Head. You are invited to meet Captain William Hilton and hear about his life and harrowing adventures on the Carolina coast. Participants will be able to interact with Captain Hilton, ask him questions, etc.
Guided Tour of Santa Elena on Parris Island Special guided tour of the National Historic Site of Santa Elena on Parris Island. Walk in the footsteps of the French and Spanish explorers who tread this ground over 450 years ago, explore the remnants of a Spanish fort surrounded by a moat and learn about the lost century of our American history. Tour of Parris Island lasts approximately 2 hours, weather permitting. Meet your tour guide at the Santa Elena History Center at 9:00 AM where you will proceed to Parris Island. You may want to first enjoy the History Center’s main exhibit “Santa Elena: America’s Untold Story” which will take approximately 30 minutes ($10.00 admission). Camp Dig-It! Camp Dig-It is geared toward children ages 6-14 and offers an introduction to the field of archaeology by a professional archaeologist. Participants in the program will have the opportunity to learn about the past as they excavate and identify from dig boxes. Eliza Lucas Pinckney You are invited to meet Eliza Lucas Pinckney and discover how she developed indigo on her father’s plantation and created a profitable industry for South Carolina planters. Eliza has agrees to tell you about her many schemes, whims, and projects.
Colonial Medicine What was health care like for people in colonial South Carolina? COOKING
STYLE! SUMMER SPECIALTIES
Every summer when I’m in the kitchen with my MOM, we always end up cooking some fresh vegetables as they are so readily available and fresh from all the local farmers’ markets we have here in the Lowcountry. I’m not sure about you, but I think southern veggies taste better than those grown anywhere else. I told her that I have been getting some great feedback from some of our favorite recipes we’ve shared with y’all the last couple issues, so we decided to share a few of our favorite fresh vegetable recipes that are great for summertime deliciousness. FRIED GREEN TOMATOES WITH CREAM GRAVY
STUFFED SQUASH
• 6 green tomatoes or really firm ripe tomatoes • 1/3 cup flour • 1/3 cup of white cornmeal • 1/8 cup of panko bread crumbs • 6 strips of applewood smoked bacon • Kosher salt • Fresh cracked pepper • Sugar
Definitely one of my favorites. You can use yellow or zucchini. Usually the bigger the better. Cut long ways in half after cleaning thoroughly. Place face down in shallow amount of water and simmer until there is some give when you touch them. I prefer to cook my squash halves in my bamboo steamer. Let cool and scoop out seed mixture with a spoon and place in a skillet. Add butter or margarine, diced Vidalia onion and your favorite type of meat. Bacon crumbs, country ham, sausage or even hamburger all work fine. Go with the applewood smoked bacon DUDE. You may need to add a splash of white wine. Once you get your mixture thoroughly marriaged together and hot, take off burner and add in cornbread stuffing mix where you end up with a moist yet firm mixture. Put mixture in squash halves and place in 375 oven for about 20 minutes. Pull out of oven with 5 minutes left and grate your favorite cheese on top and place back in oven. I like parmesan or white sharp cheddar. Serve hot and then go slap your Mama again!
Slice firm tomatoes 1/2” thick. Dip slices in to seasoned flour/cornmeal mix. Fry 6 slices of bacon and take them out and place on paper towel. Fry tomato slices in bacon grease until golden brown. Flip them only once. Remove tomato slices, sprinkle with sugar and place on paper towel. Add 3 tablespoons of floor to bacon grease and slowly stir in 1 1/2 cups of milk and add salt & pepper to taste. Once gravy is thick, pour over fried tomato slices and crumble bacon on top, then go slap your Mama! GRANNY B CORN Tired of the same old corn on the cob? Well try this recipe my Great Grandmother, Granny B taught my MOM and I.
DEEP FRIED BEER BATTER VIDALIA ONION RINGS Buy the biggest Vidalia onions available. 3 will make plenty of rings. Cut in to thick 1/3” slices and soak in ice water bath for at least an hour. Make sure the inter membrane is removed so batter will stick better. Drain chilled rings, dry on paper towel and dip liberally in to beer batter.
Fresh silver queen corn on the cob. With a nice long sharp knife, twice cut the corn off the cob in to a cast iron skillet, then take the back side of your knife and scrap the cob with that edge and get all the starchy juice out of the cob. Add ample amounts of room temperature real butter slices. As the mixture starts to get hot, sprinkle some sugar in to mixture, she called it “whiffle dust”, stir again and cover. You can add a splash of milk but not necessary. Cook approximately 5 minutes stirring occasionally and add salt if you wish, only after cooking. More better than good DUDE!
24
BEER BATTER Combine in large mixing bowl, 1/2 cup of sifted flour, 1/2 cup of sifted corn starch, 1/2 of your favorite beer, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder, a couple drops of yellow food coloring and salt n pepper to taste. Just make sure your mixture is thick enough. You can always add more flour if it

NEO-CLASSIC 1936 MERCEDES BENZ SPORT 500 CABRIOLET
Summer 2016
Featured above is a 1993 Series IV Clenet. This design is a neo- classic take on the 1936 Mercedes Benz sport 500 cabriolet. This car has been described as an “automotive work of art.” Built on the chassis of a 1993 Lincoln Continental Mark V with a Ford 302 engine, V8, 4.7 litres, usually designated as the base Mustang engine. The vehicle, from a collector estate, had only 750 original miles on it. Virtually brand new! Its’s owner, Paul Roth, acquired it earlier last year. The Hilton Head Low Country Oyster and Motor Driving Society recruited him and it as a club entry to the Concourse D’Ellegance. This classic look with Coachwork by Clenet seems to appeal to enthusiasts of all ages and won 1st place in its class. Mr. Roth entered it in the Sun City Auto Club Show shortly after and was awarded first in its class and the “People’s Choice” for the entire show. He is a
resident of the Oldfield Plantation and represents it and Sun City on the County School Board District 6. He is an avid fan of outstanding machine design and was a former owner of a 1969 Beachcraft Duke, a cabin class twin engine pressurized aircraft. Roth was licensed as an instrument rated pilot. He is a former resident of Hilton Head island and served under Tom Peoples on the town planning commission. With the town’s encouragement he acquired and rebuilt what now is the Main Street (Youth) Theater. He, with Kent Langley, managed it for eight years. He currently plans to re-enter his prize this year and is considering offering it up at the auction. Dear Harold, A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from San Diego when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked, “Are you going to San Diego?” “Sure,” answered the blonde, “Do you need a lift?” “Not for me. I’ll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I’ve got two chimpanzees in the back that have to be taken to the San Diego Zoo. They’re a bit stressed already, so I don’t want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me? I’ll give you $100 for your trouble.” “I’d be happy to,” said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde’s car and carefully strapped into their seat belts, and off they went. Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of San Diego when suddenly he was horrified! There was the blonde walking down the street, holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde. “What are you doing here?” he demanded, “I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo.” “Yes, I know you did,” said the blonde. “But we had money left over so now we’re going to Sea World.” Signed, The Lights Are On But Nobody’s Home Dear TLAOBNH, Sounds like a nice lady to me. What’s the big deal? LOL HAROLD Dear Harold, I really hate Blonde girls jokes. They make us blondes sound so dumb and believe me when you say this, “We Ain’t DUDE!” Some blonde DUDES are just as dumb as we are, don’t ya know? Signed Blondie White Dear BW, I’ll be honest with you, I know some dumb blonde DUDES for sure. Like this one blonde man that was in the bathroom and his wife shouts: “Did you find the shampoo?” He answers, “Yes, but I’m not sure what to do... it’s for dry hair, and I’ve just wet mine.” or the blonde DUDE that shouted frantically into the phone, “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!” “Is this her first child?” asks the Doctor. “No!” he shouts, “this is her husband!” then there was a blonde DUDE that is in jail, the guard looks in

his cell and sees him hanging by his feet. “Just WHAT are you doing?” he asks. “Hanging myself,” the blonde replies. “The rope should be around your neck” says the guard. “I tried that,” he replies, “but then I couldn’t breathe.” HAROLD Dear Harold, Why do scuba divers always fall backwards off their boats? Signed, Skinnie Diver Dear SD, Well, I would think if they fell forward, they’d still be in the boat! HAROLD Dear Harold, These two goobers find three grenades and they decide to take them to the police station. One DUDE asked the other, What if one explodes before we get there?” The other DUDE replies, “Well, we’ll just lie and say we only found two!” Signed, That Elevator Does Not Go To The Top Floor Dear TEDNGTTTF, I’m guessing those DUDES are blonde! HAROLD Dear Harold, Two DUDES are talking and one says, “Christmas is on a Friday this year.” The other DUDE says, “Let’s hope it not on the 13th!” Signed, Two Beers Short Of A Six-Pack Dear TBSOASP, I’m guessing that second DUDE is blonde also. OK, here’s one of my favorite Blonde DUDE jokes. A woman phoned her blonde neighbor man and said: “Close your curtains the next time you and your wife are having sex. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday.” To which the blonde DUDE replied, “Well the joke’s on all of you because I wasn’t even at home yesterday! HAROLD Dear Harold, I’ll be you $4,567 dollars that you can’t guess how much I owe my bookie. Signed Doubled Down And Lost HerDear DDALH,

Signed, Can’t A DUDE Get Any Respect Dear CADGAR, You are so lucky to be happily married. I had to buy my own vacuum cleaner and so far all it’s been doing is gathering dust.
