appy Springtime and welcome to the NEW DUDE. Some times things change for the better and I was the worst skeptic of this saying having to go find a new printer due to unforeseen circumstances. Well my faithful followers of DUDE, I have hooked up with the great family owned operation, Evening Post Publishing better know to many as the Pulitzer Prize Winning, The Post & Courier in Charleston. Through a couple months of consultation, we came up with our new format. Sharper looking, more reader friendly but most importantly, no real changes on our fun nature loving outdoors content. So, check it out cover to cover and send me an email and let me know what you think of the NEW DUDE. Let’s saddle up or horses, get mounted up and get going on a nice long springtime ride. Ah yes! It feels great to be outdoors, riding our horses around this beautiful place we live, the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Come on, let’s get going, we’re burnin daylight DUDE! As many of you know by now, I always dedicate each issue to some great DUDE or DUDES and induct them in to the ever popular DUDE HALL of FAME. I had plenty of time to talk to you DUDES & DUDETTES over the winter and got many great suggestions. A pair of DUDES that came up more than once, was none other the builders of the world’s first successful powered and manned airplane, Orville and Wilbur Wright, THE WRIGHT BROTHERS. The younger Orville was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1871 and the elder Wilber was born in Millville, Indiana in 1867. They were two of seven children of Susan and Milton Wright. Strangely enough, neither one of these DUDES ever got married which obviously gave them more free time than those of married couples. In 1878, their father brought them home a toy helicopter made of paper, bamboo and cork with a rubber band to actually twirl its rotor. The boys played with this toy until it broke and then they made another by building their own. They are documented as referring to this very incident that sparked their curiosity in flying. Both brothers attended high school but neither received their diplomas. In 1889, Orville dropped out of high school and started a printing business with his very own hand built printing press, thanks to the help of his brother Wilbur. They soon launched their own weekly newspaper, the West Side News with Orville as publisher and Wilbur as editor. This printing and publishing fascination ran its course and they found a new affinity and it was capitalizing on the national bicycle craze by opening up a repair and sales shop in 1892. The Wright Cycle Company had come of age. The brothers did quite well and this allowed them to fund their continued growing interest in flight. In 1896, the brothers were fascinated when Smithsonian Institution Secretary, Samuel Langley successfully flew and unmanned steam powered fixed wing model aircraft. In 1899, Wilbur reached out to the Smithsonian Institution and got information via publications on aeronautics and drawings by Leonardo

river banks, we see some folks experiencing sheer enjoyment of kayaking here in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Add to that the fascination of nature and wildlife photography and you have an unbelievable experience that allows you to be at one with nature, stealthily slipping around in your Hobie kayak taking photos of the wonderful wildlife and natural resources we have throughout our pristine waterways. Susan Trogdon, who we met via her great prints available at Higher Ground Outfitters, checks in this issue with some of her experiences and great photos. Welcome aboard Susan, we appreciate you sharing with our DUDE readers even if you are a dook fan! LOL As usual during our rides we always enjoying the words of wisdom from our Naturalist DUDE, Marvin Bouknight. Well brotha Marvin and his lovely wife, Gabrielle have a special treat for us this Spring. They went on a photo safari to the Serengeti in Africa. Not too many DUDES can take wildlife photos like Marvin, so enjoy the awesome center spread article. Thanks for sharing Marvin, the photos are spectacular. This spring, especially during the month of April our good friends at the Santa Elena Foundation and newly opened History Center check in with the 450th anniversary of Santa Elena itself. DUDE,that’s a long time ago and the history that continues to emanate and be uncovered from that period of time in the 1560’s is really quite remarkable. Special thanks to Executive Director, Dr. Andy Beall and Marketing Director, Megan Meyer for bringing such a great story and a even greater history center to downtown Beaufort. LOWCOUNTRY KAYAKING A Great Wildlife Photographer Experience BY SUSAN TROGDON
I
I could go on for days about the wonderful memories while kayaking and the things we bought my Hobie kayak 12 years ago and have paddled hundreds of miles in Beaufort have seen. These photographs are etched in my mind because I’m only lucky enough rivers and creeks. Usually, my best friend, Maria Ernestine, is with me but I do to get a few shots of the amazing things we encounter. Maria has her GoPro go alone sometimes. We have paddled the Edisto, Ashepoo and Combahee strapped to her hat and is able to video some of our adventures. She has many rivers. It is always a thrill being in the water with the gators and unique YouTube videos and I still watch them from time to time which always brings wildlife found in those areas. a smile! The best way to watch these videos is to enter Maria Ernestine My photography just evolved from being aware of the natural in the search bar on YouTube, as there are many videos and they will all beauty while taking it slow on the water. We have had them swim unstories about being caught in bad winds and turning tides, but we have der our kayaks, but they NEVER try to tip us, as I get asked quite often. We only been rescued once and it was by our husbands in all these years. It’s have had them jump completely out of the water so high in the air that it’s a bad memory, so I won’t share the details but I will tell you the tide split unbelievable, we have seen them mate, witnessed a mother nursing her calf in the river, the winds picked up and after five hours of paddling and another and we have seen pods as large as what appeared to be 30-50 dolphin. two hours needed to our destination...we called for the motor boat! pm and ended up getting the show of a lifetime while the sun set and the full moon rose and shone brightly in Port Royal Sound. The large pod which was spread out, leaped, played and flipped right before our eyes. This went on until the sun was gone and we were paddling only by moonlight. I snapped over 300 photographs and Maria got nice video from her ‘Phone which was shared on Facebook on her page and by Beaufort Online. I would have to say the marsh ponies are another memorable and special adventure. Especially the first day we decided to venture out on that long paddle and try to find them. It was such a happy day to round the bend and see them standing in the water grazing on marsh grass. These animals are quite special and are a unique gift to this area. We also enjoy seeing the American Bald Eagles and we have been watching a pair for a couple years now who have produced an eaglet each year. It is nesting time as I write this, so by the time this story is released, there should be an eaglet born by this pair. I will never forget the first time we saw the baby pop his head up out of the nest and make eye-contact with us. We named him Mashey after an area we like to paddle to. We enjoyed paddling to see them as often as possible and eventually the eaglet fledged. It is amazing what we learn simply by watching the Eagles, but I do enjoy reading all of the information I can about them just to help understand some of their behavior. Amazing that these majestic birds remain monogamous throughout their lives.
I can say with complete honesty that as I grew up in Beaufort and always on the water either skiing, fishing or shrimping, I wouldn’t have noticed an eagle if it had flown five feet from my boat and the only way I noticed a dolphin was if it was near me while I was water skiing. This passion has definitely come with age and the appreciation for all the beautiful gifts that God have graced this beautiful area with are more respected by me. I hate it has taken so long for me to appreciate them, but I do enjoy photographing and sharing their beauty with all of my friends and even with people I don’t know. I began putting some of my favorite photographs on canvas and they are hanging in Higher Ground Outfitter and can be purchased at the store which is located at 2121 Boundary Street in Beaufort Town Center, Beaufort, South Carolina. You can call them at 843-379-4327 or visit onlineHighergroundoutfitters.com - The photography is all taken from my kayak and each photo has a story! Higher Ground Outfitters sells kayaks and rents them if you want to experience an adventure of your own. I will add that i ist important to have the proper gear especially if you plan to take electronics and Higher Ground sells dry bags, coolers, and anything possibly needed while on the water. Their knowledgeable staff can help you get started. I recommend them because they’re local, know the waters in Beaufort, and can help anyone get started with the sport, not to mention they have been long time DUDE FAMILY MEMBERS! Have fun, be safe and maybe I’ll see you on the water this Spring!

COME ONE, COME ALL to commemorate the 450th anniversary the founding of Santa Elena and the Grand Opening of the Santa Elena History Center in Beaufort, South Carolina. BY BRAD MCDONALD
I
t has been with much pride and pleasure to have been involved the past two years and watch the evolution of the SANTA ELENA FOUNDATION and to watch the realization and opening of the SANTA ELENA HISTORY CENTER, located on Bay Street, in beautiful downtown Beaufort. Executive Director, Dr. Andy Beall and Marketing Director, Megan Meyer have done a fantastic job with their great group of volunteers of bringing Beaufort an absolutely awesome historical museum that tells the story of 450 years ago when Pedro Menéndez de Aviles sailed into Port Royal Sound in 1566 to settle Santa Elena, a Spanish town lasting more than two decades. The mission of the Santa Elena Foundation is the discovery, preservation, and promotion of the “Lost Century” of European colonization through the international story of Santa Elena, the 16th Century la Florida settlement that became the colonial Spanish capital in present-day United States.

Be A Perch Jerker BY “O’NEILL OUTSIDE WILLIAMS
BEST OUTDOOR AND TRAVEL CLOTHING ON THE PLANET
I
t’s warming up fast and the Crappie are biting. Up the rivers at West Point, Sinclair, Oconee, lots of lakes and reservoirs across the entire South, the time is right for you to get in gear and round up the tastiest little fish in Southern waters. Well, maybe a Walleye is better, but not by much and anyway, there’s lots more crappie available than Walleye. In Georgia where I live, the daily limit is 35, I believe, so that’s an indication that there are plenty to be had for all. As an example to be applied to most of the Southern reservoirs, if you’ll just motor up any major river that feeds a lake, like the Oconee River above the I-20 Bridge, turn right into the main river and follow the mobs of boats, you’ll just naturally round up with a cooler full of scrappy Crappie. Remember the early spring waters are still relatively cold, so move slowly, give the critters lots of colors to choose from and before you know it, you’ll be an expert perch jerker. Have you seen the really tricked out crappie rigs? I have one friend in Alabama, well actually more than one but a few. He is a perch jerker supreme and has a fully rigged Ranger all set for Crappie fishing. It’s impossible to describe but I’ll betray a confidence here and tell you that he paid $78,000 for it. OK, he was a friend and now you see why. I don’t have to trailer my simple little rig to Alabama to fish for Springtime Crappie. He has it all DUDE! Multiple rod holders out front of the bow and behind the engine, long willow branch rods with soft ultra-lite tips fashioned with super light line and tiny little multi-colored Road Runners. I have to tell you, it’s really impressive. He says the key is to move ultra-slowly. Early season Crappie are slow to bite but they will. To my surprise, he also says that once they spook a bit and stop biting, go elsewhere for a few minutes and return for another half dozen or more. Keep a cooler with ice instead of just your live well. They clean up better and taste better by doing that. Never mind those high and mighty bass boys in their quick start boats that you’ll see flying up and down the lake. They’re fast and famous, but take heart in the knowledge that during dinner soon, while you’re enjoying some sweet tasting fillets, that bass jumper’ll be washing that expensive personality extension. Don’t forget to tune in to my weekly radio show on Saturday mornings and watch my TV show, O’Neill Outside on FOX Sports South on Saturday and Sunday morning. riving through OLDFIELD, you get a humbling sense of calm and community. The picturesque landscape, lowcountry architecture, and live oaks, draw you in as if you are in an old southern plantation. Meander through the trails or ride the course and you’ll experience the true essence of nature all around you. It’s no wonder why OLDFIELD was bestowed two great honors in the past year; The Audubon Neighborhood for Nature Award, as well as being named “South Carolina’s Best Community” OLDFIELD has set the bar high, becoming the only community to receive the Neighborhood for Nature Award in 2015, part of the Audubon International Green Neighborhoods Program. This award recognizes communities for their efforts to foster environmental awareness and stewardship. Through this program and the efforts of the OLDFIELD Staff Naturalist and Green Neighborhoods Coordinator, Jill Kombrink, OLDFIELD has completed projects in each of five tracks: water quality & conservation, resource management, wildlife habitat protection and enhancement, community awareness, and outreach and education. The community has become inspired and conscious about its environmental surroundings, already implementing positive habits such as water conservation, recycling and education. The monthly “speaker series” are always a huge hit; focusing on locally relevant topics to engage and inform the residents including oysters, bird migration and water quality protection. Throughout the community you’ll see many blue bird boxes, a butterfly garden, wildflowers and bee hives, all natural habitats to help enhance the benefit of the nearby conservation areas. “Ultimately, we look to motivate neighborhood communities to practice environmental stewardship, educate residents, and promote sustainable actions, while at the same time make it fun for all who participate, we welcome OLDFIELD’s commitment to the natural environment and to encouraging wildlife-sensitive practices.” - explained Joanna Nadeau, director of community programs for Audubon International. In addition to the Neighborhood for Nature Award, the OLDFIELD, Greg Norman Signature Golf Course holds the Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Award for its careful design and a continued commitment to preser-

vation. There is no denying the landscape of OLDFIELD, with large live oaks, expansive ponds and sheer natural beauty... OLDFIELD is built with respect for the land and heritage it brings. We are proud to announce that now in 2016, we were honored to receive the 2016 Bliss Award as “South Carolina’s Best Community” by The Real Estate Scorecard; the industry leader of online real estate reviews of the most popular master planned communities in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and in Central America. The Bliss Award represents genuine happiness and the highest quality of life offered within a community. Through multiple site visits and true reviews from actual property owners, of the 370+ master planned communities they monitor, The Real Estate Scorecard is an invaluable tool to help new buyers find their “home”, and there is no denying OLDFIELD is a wonderful community. The amenities are as diverse as they are enjoyable and they cater to all ages. A typical day could mean waking to the sunrise on the Okatie River, or going horseback riding through the trails. OLDFIELD’s dining events including Oyster Roasts, Farm to Table Dinners, Fine Dining or grabbing a quick bite for lunch, invites a sense of community and an opportunity to spend time with friends and neighbors. “For years, we’ve had our eye on OLDFIELD Club because of the relaxed country-like atmosphere. Its location in Okatie is sweetly set between Beaufort and Bluffton. The four-rail white fencing and red barn equestrian center at the community’s entrance gives one a sense of entering an authentic southern plantation.” – The Real Estate Scorecard For OLDFIELD, the work isn’t done. The Audubon Society will continue to develop new programs and we will continue to strive to go above and beyond to inspire and engage the community in sustainable environmental practices. You can’t help but think that the Bliss and Audubon Award seem to go hand in hand; the natural surrounding and the overall happiness and quality of life within the community, what more could you ask for? You would be remiss to simply drive by the white picket fences, the horses grazing in the pastures, and an entrance framed by majestic oaks & gas lanterns… how could you not feel the need to swing in and see what this community is all about.

CALL OF THE SERENGETI PHOTOS AND ARTICLE BY MARVIN BOUKNIGHT
O
ur plane landed at Mt. Kilimanjaro airport late at night, and we were taken to our hotel, where we would spend one restless night in Arusha. The next morning, we met Thompson, our naturalist/guide. A native of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Thompson was a young man with a wildlife biology degree, tremendous experience and intelligence about the animals, plants, birds, and ecology of both the Ngorogoro Crater and the Serengeti Plains, and he was adept at positioning photographers for great shots. In other words, he was PERFECT! For the next 12 days, it would be Gabrielle, myself, and Thompson on a private safari, headed to the Ngorogoro Crater for a couple of days and then the remainder of the time in mobile tented camps in the middle of the Serengeti. Our day began as we drove up the outside wall of the ancient volcano, that exploded and collapsed on itself 2-3 million years ago to form the Ngorogoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The floor of this caldera encompasses over 100 square miles of grasslands, springs, a few forests, and a tremendous diversity of African wildlife. Perched in our lodge on the rim of the crater at 7800 ft., we would descend 2000ft. or so each day to the floor of the crater for our game drives.

It’s impossible to describe everything we saw in the Ngorogoro Crater, but seeing our first animals, a small group of zebras, I was pretty much overcome with emotion. I was seeing first hand, the animals, habitats, ecosystems, etc. I have read about, studied, and imagined my entire life to become a naturalist and wildlife biologist. I can’t explain the emotion, but I was seeing, smelling, hearing, and feeling everything at once, it was simply overwhelming. In the crater, we saw jackals, hyena, lions, hippos, elephants, gazelles, wildebeest, buffalo, a dizzying diversity of birds (including ostrich and thousands of flamingos), and yes, we saw black rhinos. Some folks didn’t see any rhinos, we saw 6 different rhinos! My favorite experience in the crater was patiently waiting and being rewarded with seeing the birth of two baby wildebeest. From barely seeing the tiny hooves poking out of the mother to the full birth, we witnessed the first breath, the clumsy first steps, and in 15 minutes, the baby wildebeest was standing and nursing from the mother. After 30 minutes, the little calf was oafishly loping and galloping around the herd. What a privilege! After two days, we reluctantly left the Ngorogoro Crater and drove for several hours to the Serengeti. Along the way, we stopped in Oldupai Gorge (incorrectly called Olduvai), to witness the area famous the work of Louis and Mary Leakey. This area is known not only for its fossilized Homo spp. bones and fragments, but also for stone tools, extinct animal species bones, and the famous Laetoli footprints (found about 30 miles away), which were “fossilized” bipedal footprints of the early hominids walking through volcanic ash that dates back to 3.5 million years! As we exited the museum, we met with a couple of Maasai elders, and after a “conversation” of respect and admiration that transcended language, Gabrielle received a special handmade necklace from one of the elders (from around his own neck), truly a blessing from such an amazing and wonderfully spiritual person.. The Serengeti was a truly transformative experience for us both. We were both rendered speechless by the remoteness and vastness of the region. Serengeti is the Maasai word for “endless plain” and that truly describes this place. Literally millions of animals like gazelles, buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest were scattered across the plain, and in the distance, you could see lines upon lines of wildebeest plodding along in the same direction, the greatest migration on earth happening right before our eyes. Massive prides of lions, engorged with meat from a successful hunt, were lazily sunning on the rocky out-crop-

pings known as the Moru Kopjes. Hartebeest were warily grazing nearby, with the dominant male perched on a termite mound, scanning the horizon for predators, while elephants slowly lumbering along, stopping only to graze or take a dust bath. Here, we saw the famous Seronera lions, whose claim to fame is their propensity to climb and snooze in the trees of the area, behavior not usually seen in lions. And where there are trees, you had to keep a sharp lookout for the amazing camouflage of one of the hardest cats to see, the leopard. While some folks are fortunate to see one, Gabrielle and I saw 4 different leopards, with one giving me the shot of a lifetime, silently peeking out from the canopy of an acacia tree! All of what we saw was amazing, from the hippos farting in the pools, the Kori bustard (the largest flying bird in Africa) puffing out his neck to “boom” his call to attract a female, the hyenas consuming a freshly killed wildebeest while keeping an eye on the ever-encroaching vultures, to the mating rituals of a pride of lions. All were just surreal, but our favorite moment came on our last day of the safari. Our search that day was to revolve, at our request, around finding cheetahs. These cats are becoming quite rare and face an uncertain future, due to population challenges, loss of habitat, and many other factors, and we were not going to miss an opportunity to see this beautiful cat. We located a single cheetah as you often find other animals, by seeing about 10 safari vehicles closely aggregated in one place. As we arrived, sure enough, there was the cheetah, surrounded by vehicles, completely blocked in. As much as I wanted to see this cat, I didn’t want to be part of that circus, so we decided to hang back about 75-100 yards away from the crowd. Sure enough, the cheetah laid down and once the flash and dash crowd got their IPhone photos and selfies (dear God, the selfies), with all the patience and attention span of a 3-year old, they left in about 10-15 minutes, leaving us all alone with the cheetah. As gazelles grazed behind the cheetah, the cat lounged around, periodically sitting up and surveying the plains and animals around him. Gradually, the gazelles, seemingly unaware of his presence, moved closer, with one young Thomson’s gazelle aimlessly wandering further away from the group. All of a sudden, as by some unseen trigger, the cheetah visibly tensed, slowly crouched, and started a slow stalk toward the unwary gazelle. I swung the camera around, and then, like a shot, the cheetah took off! His movement sent the gazelle into a frenzied and frantic run, with the cheetah gaining. The gazelle tried to dart and dash, but the chee-

tah matched his moves, step for step. With an anticipatory “zag”, the cheetah reached out with a paw and slapped the haunches of the gazelle, causing the gazelle to stumble slightly and the cheetah pounced, grabbing the throat of the gazelle, and suffocating his prey with a vise-like grip. It was over and it happened…so…fast. We had just witnessed one of the greatest scenes played out every day on the Serengeti plains. He took his prey, settled down, and began to devour as much as he could, hopefully before the vultures and hyenas discovered him. We left him to his meal, satisfied with the memory of a lifetime. It’s this and so much more that I hoped to witness and through patience and the instincts of a fantastic safari guide, we saw everything we wanted and more. I can honestly say this is not our last time to visit the plains of Africa because we have fallen prey to the call of the Serengeti DUDE PROFILE: Marvin Bouknight is a South Carolina native and has lived in the Lowcountry for over 15 years. FBI SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT CHADWICK VISITS MOAA LOW COUNTRY CHAPTER What would you do if you found yourself in the middle of an active shooter situation DUDE?
W
BY BOB FREEMAN
hen our Low Country Chapter of MOAA, Military Officers Association of America asked FBI Special Agent J. Robert Chadwick to be the guest speaker at our December luncheon at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Officers Club, we didn’t anticipate that his presentation on “Active Shooter Response,” would be a topic “ripped from the headlines”! By awful coincidence, the San Bernardino, CA, terrorist attack was only days before our last 2015 meeting. You can bet we listened closely to decadeand-a-half Bureau veteran SA Chadwick, Principal Firearms Instructor and Training Coordinator for the Columbia Field Office, an expert committed to good guys’ success in armed encounters, as he advised us on surviving active shooters. The FBI has long assisted state and local law enforcement. Nevertheless, after the 2012 murders at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, CT, a White House Commission was formed with FBI participation. Legislation also ensued. The Investigative Assistance for Violent Crimes Act of 2012, enacted in 2013, allows US Attorneys to assist local authorities in investigating “mass killings” and their attempts. In 2014, the FBI reexamined “active shooter” incidents and identified 160 in the US from 2000 to 2013. Focusing on these, the FBI honed responses to active shootings and shooters. Executive law enforcement conferences, specialized tactical training and the development of FBI public awareness briefings followed. Even when law enforcement was on-site or able to respond within minutes, civilians often had to make life and death decisions, so THE PUBLIC HAD TO BE ENGAGED in training and discussions; South Carolina religious congregations were among the first to receive the FBI’s active shooter briefings. SA Chadwick underscored that with America’s free and open society, such shootings cannot be stopped altogether. “Our greatest strength is actually our greatest weakness.” Yet, as he explained, it is possible to prepare first responders and the general public to survive an attack and reduce the carnage wreaked by an active shooter. Nationwide, the FBI has schooled tens-of-thousands of first responders and civilians, with South Carolinians “ahead of the curve” in receiving this training. FBI active shooter response training is based on the 160-incident study and supported by the Bureau’s Behavioral Science Unit at Quantico, VA. Active shooters killed a cross-section of Americans in 40 states and in a variety of settings. The incidents averaged about once a month overall, with the annual frequency trending upward. (Per FBI data, deliberate and accidental US gun deaths and violent crimes are at the lowest levels in decades. There are no James Holmes or Adam Lanza “wannabes” gunning-down citizens daily, but active shooters are still a threat; preparation and vigilance can save lives.) The FBI has condensed its advice for surviving an active shooter into three words: “Run! Hide! Fight!” No
24
active shooter is known to have left a building to pursue a victim, so if you’re inside, GET OUT—FAST! If there’s no quick, safe way out, then HIDE securely and quietly. Turn phone ringers/sounds to silent and turn out any lights. If you can’t run or hide, then FIGHT the shooter! Attack him aggressively. Distract him, swarm him, bash him with fire extinguishers, chairs or other objects at hand. Help is on the way, so prepare for law enforcement to break in—shooting! At Columbine High School in Colorado, police assumed a hostage situation and surrounded the building to contain the damage. The shooters killed fellow students for about 15 minutes then walked around, shooting and detonating bombs randomly, then committed suicide. Responders delayed their entry and some wounded students died. The killers were single-minded and sophisticated. They’d planned for months and assembled an arsenal. Their improvised explosives were meant to collapse the second floor into the cafeteria during peak lunchtime occupancy and had the bombs functioned properly, there would have been 300 to 500 casualties. The killers had planned to shoot any survivors. The active shooter protocol changed after Columbine. To limit carnage, even a single officer now goes in immediately, ignoring wounded survivors to locate and stop the shooter. The stakes are high; the FBI says one of every two officers confronting an active shooter is shot and usually killed. Still, a rapid response can save victim’s lives. As thorough as the Columbine killers, the Virginia Tech shooter charted his rampage through Norris Hall. Attempting to make the building his fortress, he chained its doors shut and posted a note falsely claiming the barricade was booby-trapped. But well-equipped SWAT units, investigating a nearby earlier double-homicide by the shooter, were able to force their way in. He described the life and death events in Norris Hall as only an insider can. SA Chadwick graduated from Tech and knows a survivor, a woman who was shot each of three times the killer entered the room where she was! In some rooms, he noted, only those who escaped through the windows survived. As SA Chadwick led his audience through patterns emerging from the active shooter study, it was obvious that the perpetrators, though unhinged, weren’t stupid. They chose their targets carefully, planned and prepared, leaving little to chance. About 70 percent of the shootings were over before law enforcement arrived to engage the shooter, either because a citizen intervened, the shooter fled, committed suicide or was killed by someone at the scene. The FBI determined the duration of 63 incidents; 44 were over in five minutes or less and 23 ended in only two minutes or less! These short, deadly assaults show that potential victims (that’s us) must quickly recognize an attack and IMMEDIATELY take action—Run! Hide! Fight! It’s NOT realistic to expect police to arrive in under two minutes! In real life, we may have to be our own first responders.
sc.com
Spring 2016
In over 10 percent of the 160 incidents, unarmed victims were able to stop active shooters. Nevertheless, a lot of Americans ARE armed today. When SA Chadwick asked how many in the audience held Concealed Weapon Permits, quite a few hands went up (no surprise, as retirees from the profession of arms dominate MOAA). SA Chadwick stated that he could not counsel armed citizens either for or against engaging an active shooter, since it’s law enforcement’s job to take on killers. But concealed carry gives those victims who decide to fight, a tool to help level the playing field against criminals and terrorists. (You can also hide or run more confidently if you’re armed.) One should keep in mind 70 to 80% of shots fired by concealed weapons carriers are misses and you could be helf liable if you mistakenly hit an innocent person. So continue to train yourselves. An armed victim must also think about what to do when law enforcement arrives! If you are engaging to terrorist(s), make sure you drop your weapon when law presents themselves or you could end up an innocent victim. The FBI has attempted to profile the “typical” perpetrator to predict or prevent active shooter incidents. The killers seem to have some commonalities, such as the desire for infamy (SA Chadwick recommended denying them that notoriety), but they don’t fit a single, distinct behavioral profile. They also frequently are “collectors of injustice” who pile up personal grievances; additionally, they fixate on their victims (ideation), focusing on some identifiable group (coworkers, classmates, politicians, captive theatergoers, a specific ethnicity or religion, etc.), as the cause of their problems; taking action against them is a way to “get even” or become infamous. (The FBI found that 71 percent of targeted victims were the focus of perceived injustice.) Perpetrators then conduct research and make plans to “fix” the problem. After planning, shooters may prepare by acquiring weapons and engaging in target practice. SA Chadwick noted that activities up through this stage might not raise an alarm unless “contextually inappropriate” (and maybe not even then). The San Bernardino killers assembled bombs at night
Spring 2016
in their garage—while a neighbor fretted over this, he didn’t report it for fear he’d be accused of politically-incorrect “profiling.” The Virginia Tech shooter was seen at a firing range, SHOOTING AT TARGETS ON THE GROUND! Odd? Sure! But nobody reported it before the massacre. According to SA Chadwick, in 80% of the cases, someone knew someone or something that could have been helpful in preventing these tragedies, so SAY SOMETHING! A violent perpetrator may get the benefit of the doubt right up until the execution stage, when he breaches a building to get at his intended victims and actually begins shooting them! The assault may be the only unmistakable behavior exhibited by an attacker! (SA Chadwick added one more “big red flag” that might be seen by a close acquaintance: in preparation for an attack, shooters on psychiatric drugs often stop taking them, perhaps to think more clearly or to savor unfiltered revenge.) As time drew short, the audience wanted to learn more about prescriptions for survival. SA Chadwick briefly touched on the “survival mindset” familiar to military and law enforcement. Preparation and training can harness the “fight-or-flight” reflex that sometimes paralyzes in life-or-death circumstances, conditioning it into a response that heightens your senses, keeps you fighting, helps you quickly find cover or concealment or spurs you to run to safety. Whether you run, hide or fight, you must prepare. If you prepare properly, you’ll recall it under stress. As part of your preparation, be alert to people, things and activities around you and take mental note of where to run, places to hide and things in your environment you could use in a fight. A HEALTHY OUTSIDE STARTS WITH A HEALTHY INSIDE AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE JUICE BAR IS A TASTY SOLUTION
T
BY BRAD MCDONALD with JENNY GREEN BAZZLE MSN, APRN, BC
oday’s health care system is based on treating the sick. As a nation, we are not good at caring for people before they get chronic diseases like diabetes, COPD, heart disease and chronic fatigue. Over 10,000 people are entering medical treatment every day. By the year 2045, healthcare costs will explode beyond belief. This year alone, Americans will spend $3.1 trillion dollars on healthcare. It’s high time Americans start focusing on preventative medicine. In 2010, the nation’s health report was mixed: the average blood cholesterol levels had dropped, but most American diets lacked the necessary fruits and vegetables, not to mention and increase in sedentary lifestyles with the lack of physical activity. Bi g steps have been made to reduce infection rates, cancer and heart disease. Unfortunately the number of overweight people and diabetics continue to rise. Our nation simply must take more steps to change its bad habits. Our bodies need energy to think, move and work each and every day. The energy that fuels the body and mind comes indirectly from the sun by way of plants. Plants capture the suns energy in its tissue as they grow. When you eat fruits and vegetables RAW, you obtain and use the solar energy they have stored. The body requires six different nutrients and only foods deliver these directly. The truth is real foods are far superior to supplements. It is documented that almost 75% of our nation’s population consume too few fruits and vegetables. Taste prevails as the the number one factor driving our food choices with the ac-

tual cost coming in a close second. At Affordable Health Care’s Juice Bar in Bluffton, Jenny and company are striving to bring good tasting, affordable, nutritious, freshly made smoothies and juices. Jenny’s goal at Affordable Health Care is to educate and show people that eating healthy can actually taste good. Just one of their freshly made juices or smoothies can offer a half day’s worth of required vegetables and fruits. Their menu offers something for everyone’s taste buds, from children to the pickiest eaters. They even have some customers that like to create their own concoctions. Here’s a few samples from Affordable Health Care’s Juice Bar Menu, JUICE BLENDS; Alkalizer (Lemon, apple, pear, ginger, cucumber and celery), Energizer (Beet, kale, apple and spinach), Free Radical Fighter (Blueberry, strawberry, beet and apple), Garden Detox (Kale, spinach, carrot, celery and cucumber) and the Immune Booster (Orange, pear, lemon & lime). SMOOTHIES; Berry Beneficial (Blueberry, strawberry and pear), Cell Fuel (Banana, spinach, carrot and spirulina), Happy Heart (Strawberry, oatmeal and pear), Strength (Banana, cocoa and peanut butter) and DUDE FAVORITE, the Vita-Man (Kale, strawberry, apple, carrot and blueberry). They also have a nice selection of fresh teas and coffees, so do yourself a favor DUDE and swing by some time Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm and get juiced up at Affordable Health Care’s Juice Bar. It will be refreshing, taste great and your body with thank you! CHEERS DUDES!

LOWCOUNTRY FOUNDATION FOR WOUNDED MILITARY HEROES GETS R DONE DUDE WITH FISHING WITH HEROES FUNDRAISING EVENT
GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS!
A
BY BRAD MCDONALD
All faithful followers of DUDE know how I LOVE OUR MILITARY, especially those that got hurt, mentally and/or physically, serving our great country. This past Winter I was so fortunate to meet with Fishing With Heroes’, Founder/Chair, Lee Steinberg. Lee treated me to lunch at the very cool restaurant, Backwater Bill’s located at the club area of gorgeous Hampton Lakes. If you’re never checked this awesomely laid out community, you need to go for a visit. No golf course here DUDE, just miles of beautiful Lowcountry networked lakes (165 acres worth), that are “just so happened to be” stocked with the aggressive tiger bass. While throwing back a cold one and admiring the Lowcountry serenity for the view, Lee told me of this great group of folks that is the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes. A local group (100% volunteer) helping our local combat wounded war fighters & fellow

Americans that were injured while proudly serving US. Enough said for this DUDE. I’M ALL IN! They have a very successful fundraising golf tournament every year at Hampton Hall Plantation Club that is 6 years running. Come join in all the fun this coming, May, 16th and help them contribute to the already over $500,000 they’ve raised over the years. A great event, however there are a lot of wounded veterans that can’t golf, but putting them on a boat and setting them up with a fishing pole on a stocked lake, makes for more of a participatory fun filled interactive event. Hey, they fought for the American Dream, so let’s show em part of what it’s all about DUDE. On Sunday evening, April 3, 2016 we honored our combat wounded heroes with an evening of inspiration, that featured keynote speaker, former Alabama National

Guardsman and current Florida resident, Rick Smith, and his service dog Berkeley. After suffering from a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder following deployments to Iraq in 2009, Smith was paired with Berkeley through the K9s for Warriors program. Residents from Berkeley Hall raised money to put Berkeley through training. This great wounded veteran and Berkeley, the very first K9’s for Warriors service dog recipient funded by this great foundation. What a great American Hero DUDE & his DOG! This letter was sent to this fine group by Corporal Rick Smith following the event; “Thanks so much for being who you are. I do not know if you had planned it this way or what; The past few weeks have been particularly challenging for me as you now know. This past two days with y’all really made me feel much better at a time when I needed just that. Just seeing all those folks doing so much for me and the other warriors fishing on those boats and seeing the folks donating so much of their time and money that will go to help others. There are so many guys I have meet that are suffering similar and even much worse situations. If they could only see what I got to see the last few days; they could never lose hope. It is so easy for us to lose that hope in the face of seemingly overwhelming circumstances. Thank y’all for giving me that back. Now I will share that message with the warriors that I can”. Signed, Rick and Berkeley This event was held at the beautiful venue that is the Hampton Lakes Amenity Center club area. Pretty cool Lowcountry spot right here DUDE. There was a silent and live auction that had over 200 items that raised funds for our heroes. Before the live auction, a separate preliminary fund raiser raised a cool $15K to fund another warriors dog & program. The Riverdog microbrew was cold and flowing along with the fantastic tasting cuisine they threw down. Yeah, this first time inaugural event
was SOLD OUT DUDE and we had a blast gettin down to the cool sounds of The Chiggers. Those DUDES make me itch for some reason, LOL! Local Fishing GOD, Grand Marshall himself, Collins Doughtie was on hand and so was the two great radio stations THE BOB 106.9 and Rock 106.1. On Saturday morning, April 4 we kicked off a great day of fishing with some our true American Heroes. It was a privilege to be in y’all’s company. We caught some nice pieces of bass, Tiger Bass (78 to be exact, totaling 92.3 pounds) and were treated to a fabulously laid out luncheon buffet outdoor on the beach at the Hampton Lake Amenity Center. It was great to see many of the friendly Hampton Lakes residents pull up in to the dock in their private boats and load and unload the smiling faces of these great American Heroes. 21 fishing boats hosted 54 anglers including 20 wounded military guests. Yeah we had fun DUDE, so enjoy the photos and you’ll see how much fun we had and you’ll certainly know that you will want to involved next year. This great event raised over $60,000! The goal of the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes is to honor women and men of the military and their families through ACTION.....not just money, not just for thoughts and prayers, but through real life experiences aimed to make a profound difference in their lives. The fishing was great relaxing therapeutic fun that gave everyone involved some “warm & fuzzy” self fulfillment and enrichment, not to mention, I’m pretty sure we all met some new hopefully long lasting friends. If you were unable to sponsor or attend this great event, you can still donate to this great foundation via website by clicking the Donate link on the menu bar http://www.woundedmilitaryheroes.org/donate_money.html. CHEERS LEE! Thanks for including DUDE in all this fruitful frivolous feel good fun and thanks to the over 100 volunteers and sponsors.

COOKING
STYLE!
Last issue I shared some of my MOM’s favorite recipes that I still use all the time. Time spent in the kitchen cooking with your MOM is time never wasted DUDE. Thanks for all the nice compliments from you faithful DUDE followers out there that enjoyed those recipes. As I was having a glass of wine with MOM telling her about all the very favorable comments about her recipes, we decides to share a few more with y’all. Since we are so fortunate enough to live where we can get fresh LOCAL seafood pretty much year round, we often find ourselves cooking seafood the same way time and time again. Hey DUDE, I understand, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but some times though very tasty, boiled shrimp, fried fish and steamed shellfish get a bit monotonous. Well, here’s a few ways to change it up a bit and try something new and different.I promise you will not be disappointed with the savory sealections from the DUDE kitchen. OYSTER PIE (serves two DUDES or one really hungry DUDE, of course you can simply double recipe and if you prefer a bit drier pie, simply add a few more saltines) • 1 pint of local oysters with the liquid • 6 saltine crackers hand crumbled • 1 egg • 1/4 cup of cream or half & half • 1/4 stick of butter • 1/2 onion diced Sauté onion in butter and mix in ingredients, Layer in baking dish and season with, lemon pepper, celery salt and texas pete. Cook in 350 degree oven until bubbling!
SEAFOOD CASSEROLE • 1 pack of Uncle Ben’s wild rice • 1 cup of chopped celery • 1 onion chopped • 1 green pepper chopped • 1/4 cup of butter • 4 ounce jar of mushrooms (no juice), use fresh if you wish • 1 pound crabmeat (Lump or Claw) • 2 pounds of cooked and peeled shrimp • 1/2 pound of sauteed bay scallops • 1/2 pint of oysters raw • 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup • 1/4 cup of milk Cook rice, sauté veggies an combine in 9 X 13 casserole dish. 45 minutes at 350 degrees This one is so good you’ll want to slap your Mama, but don’t, she might eat some too and slap you back!
PICKLED SHRIMP • Boil 6 pounds of shrimp and peel • In a pot make your juice with; • 6 tablespoons of sugar • 3 teaspoons of salt • 3 teaspoons of whole peppercorns • 1 1/2 teaspoons of dry mustard • 6 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce • 1 cup of ketchup • 1 cup of vegetable oil (not olive) • 1 crushed up bay leaf • 1 onion sliced and ice water chilled We use and old big pickle jar. Layer in shrimp, onion and pour in juice. Let set for at least 24 hours in refrigerator.

BAKED SHRIMP If you’re tired of boiled, fried or steamed shrimp and simply want to try a new very simple way of preparing fresh local caught SC wild shrimp to this. The flavor is amazing! • Peel shrimp, I like to leave the tails on (Quantity, every how many you want to eat DUDE!) • Throw the raw shrimp in a bowl and sprinkle with a nice fresh virgin olive oil, add some Old Bay and sea salt & fresh cracked pepper. • Lay out on a baking sheet and cook 8 to 10 minutes at 400 degrees. • Turn them once about half way through cooking time. An ICE COLD BEER is the perfect compliment to this DUDE!

Dear Harold, I’m a retired military veteran and I hate to hear that some of our veterans are actually dying waiting to get an appointment to see a doctor at the VA. How can our government allow this to happen? Signed, We Gave Some, Some Gave All Dear WGSSGA, Our current administration should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen. The backlog numbers are well in to the hundreds of thousands and that’s simply unforgivable. And no one is being held accountable cause they can not be fired for their corruption and incompetence. Unbelievable DUDE! When it came time for them to deploy, they didn’t exactly get a few months to wait to see if they wanted to go or not. We should treat our Veterans with honor and respect. PERIOD! HAROLD Dear Harold, As I was a young DUDE serving my country in the military I often found some of the information in the training manuals very amusing. “If the enemy is in range, so are you!”, “Careful, tracers work both ways.”, “Most five second fuses last about three seconds”, “Never tell the Platoon Sergeant you have nothing to do.” and one I liked the most, “If you see a bomb technician running, try to keep up with him.” OOORAH! Signed, Devil Dog P.S. One of my favorite military quotes of all time was from General MacArthur, “Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword, obviously never encountered automatic weapons.” Dear DD, First of all, let me and my DUDE FAMILY MEMBERS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. I have gotten to know many Marine Corps Pilots over the past few years and some of the training and advice they have
36
received over their years of service and training are quite amusing indeed. Here area few anecdotal ones I recall; “It is generally inadvisable to eject directly over the area you just bombed!”, “The only time you have too much fuel is when you’re on fire!”, “Airspeed, altitude and brains. Two are always needed to successfully complete the flight.” “Flying the airplane is always more important than radioing your plight to a person on the ground incapable of understanding or doing anything about it.”, “There is no reason to fly through a thunderstorm in peacetime.” and “You know that your landing gear is up and locked when it takes full power to taxi to the terminal.” Never forget when you are in Beaufort, The Noise You Hear Is the Sound of Freedom. OOORAH INDEED! HAROLD P.S. There was a couple funny quotes that came from the SR71 test pilots, “Yea, Though I fly through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for I’m at 50,000 feet and climbing!” and “You’ve never been lost until you’ve been lost at Mach 3!” Dear Harold, I’m a bit concerned about some of the progressive liberals on the left talking about banning guns. The gun free zones in California, Chicago, Baltimore and Washington DC don’t seem to be working that well. What do you think? Signed, Annie Oakley Dear AO, Viva the 2nd Amendment! No redneck or hillbilly is going to give up their gun to any politician, that I can promise you. Since they talk about banning guns because they’re killing people, maybe we should use that logic and just make murder illegal and people will stop getting killed. BRILLIANT! HAROLD Dear Harold, Female aliens are invading the earth and
kidnapping sexy, good looking men, who are good golfers. You, personally, are not in any danger. I just emailed you to say goodbye. Take care. Signed, Noah Hacker Dear NH, Have a nice flight DUDE. I’m a fish, I don’t golf! HAROLD Dear Harold, I’m doing great with my new diet. My goal is to lose 10 pounds. I’ve only got 15 more to go! I don’t mean to brag but I actually finished by 14 day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes. Signed, I. M. Hereford Dear IMH, I think I’ll just put an “Out of Order” sticky note on my forehead and call it a day. HAROLD Dear Harold, I’m on a diet and someone told me to try eating Tofu and Humus. How do you prepare Tofu and Humus? I tried eating a salad for dinner. It was mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really, it was just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce..And cheese, OK FINE, it was a pizza, I ate a pizza. Signed, Dieting DUDE Dear DD, Sounds like you got some issues DUDE. Preparing Tofu is a simple two step process. 1. Throw it in the trash. 2. Grill some meat.
