Fall 2015
he Autumnal Equinox brings an end to the Summer Solstice and that makes this DUDE very joyful indeed. It is without a doubt my favorite time of year for many reasons. The madness of the summer tourist season has passed, it’s not so blistering hot and humid, that it punches you in the face when you walk out of the air conditioning, it’s much more pleasant to play golf and yes DUDES and DUDETTES, the hunting and fishing gets a whole lot better. So, put on your chaps, grab your hat, slide on your boots and let’s head to the barn and mount our horses for a nice long cool Autumn ride and watch the leaves change. Yeah DUDE, that’s why we live here in the beautiful Lowcountry of South Carolina. Our thoughts and prayers go out and we have hopes for a speedy recovery for our friends in Columbia and Charleston that got absolutely dumped on the first week of October. 24 inches of rain in a few days is historical indeed. Let’s get this megillah rollin DUDE. This Fall we would like to induct two DUDES to our ever popular DUDE HALL of FAME. I’m not sure one would be as great without the other and these two DUDES are none other than Michael Jordan and Dean Smith. I was fortunate enough to be at Chapel Hill in 1982 when the first bit of Jordan Magic happened and he hit that final shot in New Orleans against Georgetown, giving Dean Smith his first national championship. Truly one of the wilder nights of my life, much of which I can not share with y’all. LOL All I can say is, everyone was going around painting each other with Carolina Blue paint and you’ll have to use your imagination on the rest. I recall a very short lived bottle of Jack Daniels! Dean Edwards Smith was ironically born in Emporia, Kansas on February 28.1931. Interestingly enough, his parents, Frances and Alfred, where both public school teachers. His Dad actually coached the Emporia High Spartans to a Kansas state basketball championship in 1934. Again, interestingly enough, that team had the first African American basketball player in Kansas tournament history. Dean attended Topeka High School and played basketball and lettered all four years. He was named to the all-state team in his senior year. Dean was also the quarterback for the football team and played catcher for the baseball team. Smith attended University of Kansas where he continued to play all three sports and Kansas won the national basketball championship in 1952 coached by Phog Allen, who was coached by the inventor of basketball, James Naismith. Dean served in the United States Air Force in Germany and coached the academy’s baseball and golf teams. Shortly there after in 1958, North Carolina coach Frank McGuire asked Smith to join his staff. In 1961, Dean became the head coach of the Tarheels. He didn’t exactly set the world on fire, however as time passed, the wins started rolling in and he helped promote desegregation by recruiting the university’s first African-American scholarship player, Charlie Scott. In 1982, Dean had recruited Michael Jordan and the dream championship team with James Worthy and Sam Perkins had a record of 32 & 2 that year. Later in his career in 1993, Dean won his second national title when the Heels handed Chris Webber and the Fab Five a crushing defeat. Thanks for that T.O. Chris. Dean coached the USA Men’s basketball team to a Gold Medal in 1976, took the Heels to 11 final fours, won 12 ACC tournaments, won 17 regular season championships, won ACC coach of the year 9 times, won the national coach of the year 4 times, retired with then, the most victories at 879 and had a winning percentage of 77.6%. Pretty darn impressive DUDE. Sadly, we lost Dean in February of this year and he will always be remembered as Coach Smith where his name lives on at the Dean E. Smith Center where the Tarheels play basketball today. Michael Jeffery Jordan was also born in February on the 17th, 1963. Born in Brooklyn, New York to parents Deloris and James. When little Mikey was still a toddler, the Jordans moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. He was the 4th of 12 children. MJ attended Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington where he

also played all three sports. Though Jordan could not make the varsity team when he was a sophomore, he went on to be a star on the JV team, throwing up multiple 40 point plus games, even though he was only 5’11”. The DUDE grew like a weed that next summer by 4” and his senior year he was on the McDonald’s All-American Team averaging a triple double with 29.2 points, 11.6 rebounds and 10.1 assists. Many people would say Dean was the only person to hold Michael under 20 points per game, however Smith instilled the team philosophy to the young Jordan. He was NCAA All-American First Team his freshman and sophomore years and won the Naismith and Wooden College Player of the Year in 1984. MJ skipped his senior year and was selected 3rd in the NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. Jordan returned to Chapel Hill in 1986 and got his degree and that’s not surprising as Dean Smith had a graduation rate of 96.6% of his athletes. MJ reset Chicago on fire and with his Nike shoe contract, well the sky

was the limit and AIR JORDAN was born. I know people think Lebron James is the King but just compare their records and see who is the Real King of Basketball. Rookie of the year, 6 times NBA champion, 6 time NBA finals MVP, 5 MVP’s, 3 time All-Star MVP, 14 time All-Star, 10 first team NBA, Defensive Player of the Year twice, 10 time scoring champion, 2 time slam dunk champion, all time NBA playoff leading scorer, AP Athlete of the Year 3 years in a row, scored 32,292 points, had 6,672 rebounds, had 5,633 assists and played in all 82 games 9 different years. Enough said I think. Jordan bought a minority stake in the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006, now owns 89.5% and it remains to be seen if his magical touch can carry over from player to ownership. His marketing sponsorships for such brands as Nike, Coca-Cola, Chevrolet, Gatorade, McDonald’s, Ball Park Franks, Rayovac, Wheaties and MCI have turned MJ in to very wealthy man. His net worth is estimated around $1billion dollars. I’m a proud Tarheel graduate and even prouder to welcome Dean Smith and Michael Jordan to the DUDE HALL of FAME. Dean, I enjoyed going to your basketball camps as a young boy and MJ, I enjoyed meeting you and playing in your Hilton Head Celebrity golf tournament many moons ago. WELCOME ABOARD DUDES! Now let’s get those horses galloping out of the barn and get on with our fall ride cause we’re burning daylight. YEE HI, GITTY UP! What would an issue of DUDE be without some Wisdom from the Woods from our Nature DUDE, Marvin Bouknight. Brotha Marvin seems to be in a scary spooky mood with Halloween this fall. Creepy Crawlies are everywhere you look in nature, especially out on the trail, so beware my friends. Some look scary, some are scary, some are poisonous and some are not poisonous. Learn which ones to look for and most likely if you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you. Thanks for the great photos and for sharing your wisdom you creepy DUDE. Fall means good hunting and fishing for us DUDES that like to go outdoors and bring home some of Mother Nature’s offerings. As we leave the ranch and lose sight of the barn, we ran in to, none other than our ole buddy, O’Neill Outside Williams. You gotta love that DUDE’s nationally televised outdoor show. Well, O’, as he calls himself, checks in with a story of old men, old hats and gives us a tip on deer behavior. Thanks for checking in O’. Come see us some time DUDE. Without a doubt, one of our favorite places to shop for outdoors/outfitters gear is our long time DUDE family members at Higher Ground Outfitters. Leslie Norris does such and great job helping out Tim Lovett. One of their on site outdoorsmen is Chris Kirby. Chris checks in this issue with some fun hunting and fishing via his trusty Hobie kayak. Cast and Blast is how some of us DUDES roll in the fall. Thanks for the tips Chris. Our precious Lowcoutry natural resources are very special and unique. They must be respected and protected and our good friends at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources do such a great job for us. Well, every once in a while, there’s a Googan who thinks he can run a scam and break the laws that are put in place for a reason. Please enjoy our article about Operation Guardian Angel where a SCDNR DUDE went undercover to bust said Googan for a multitude of violations. I think he may have learned his lesson with his 51 tickets and $118,000 in fines. Lessons to be learned, respect our natural resources, call SCDNR if you see violations and don’t be a Googan! Nice job DUDES! Now that we are far away for the ranch enjoying these cool fall breezes, we like to let our horses run wide open like the FA-18’s screaming of the runways at the MCAS (Beaufort). Hang on cowboys and girls, let’s turn ‘em loose. Speaking of our great MCAS (Beaufort), I got invited to another Officer’s Call, Professional Military Education event as a proud member of the Lowcountry Chapter of the Military Officer’s Association of America. After saddling up with a few hundred of American’s finest, Marine Corps pilots for a cold one, we got introduced to Mr. Robert Coram a Pulitzer Prize Nominated author. Robert shared his stories of three really intriguing military officers who’s biographies he wrote about. Every heard of Air Force Colonels, Bud Day and John Boyd? How about Lieutenant General, Brute Krulak USMC? Enjoy learning about these bad ass DUDES. No other way to describe them. Thanks for sharing their stories with us Mr. Coram and thanks for the hospitality Colonel Buck and Lieutenant Colonel Hendrickson. OOORAH! Since were riding around enjoying and appreciating our fine American military personnel, this past summer via our connections with the LCMOAA, we were invited to go on a VIP tour of the Air Dominance Training Center at the Savannah, Georgia airport. Did you know that this place even existed? Me either DUDE, but

believe me, there is some serious air warfare combat training going on down there. We got to meet the 104th Fighter Wing from Massachusetts and believe me, these DUDES are top guns and their squadron of F-15E’s will take on all comers. Thanks for the special up close and personal tour, Lieutenant Colonel Brenda Hendricksen USAF and Lieutenant Colonel Sean Halbrook USAF. After witnessing exercise Atlantic Spear, I feel a whole lot safer I can promise you that. All true blue Americans and all of our great military forces respect our Veterans and our Wounded Warriors. The Simpson Cup is a great event where Wounded Warriors get to play serious golf and compete with their fellow Wounded Warriors in the United Kingdom in a Ryder Cup format. We felt privileged to be invited to meet the members of our USA team as they had a qualifier on Dataw Island. What a beautiful gorgeous Lowcountry piece of paradise. They threw down a Lowcountry Boil that would make you go slap your Moma at the inviting outdoor area down at the Dataw Island Marina. Yeah DUDE, it don’t get much better than that. Good luck DUDES! Bring home the cup. Thanks for the invite Glenn Blackburn we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. GOD BLESS OUR WOUNDED WARRIORS! I hope everyone had as great a time as we did this year at the Beaufort Water Festival. Commodore Bill Damude did and fantastic job and I do believe he had some fun as well. Our center photo spread is dedicated to all the contest entrants and winners and we must send a BIG DUDE THANK YOU to Renea Gray for taking all the great photos to share with us this fall. Congratulation Chris Canaday as he is our 2106 Beaufort Water Festival Commodore. We look forward to working with you Chris and your great group of volunteers. I ain’t never had too much fun, but this year’s Water Festival was close. CHEERS Y’ALL! We have a heartfelt story to share with y’all during this fall ride. It’s the tragic story of the lost of young little DUDE, Gavin Quance. His parents, GOD BLESS THEM, have pulled themselves together after their terrible loss and started a campaign in his name in conjunction with the Arrhythmia Association and STARS-US to raise funds to get Automated External Defibrillators in every Bluffton Police patrol car. These AEDs can really save lives if they get to those in need fast enough. They greatly increase the likelihood of survival, so check out this article and send in a few bucks to help out this very worthwhile cause and our Bluffton Police Department. Who knows the life it may save, may very well be yours! Let’s start heading our horses back towards the ranch DUDES. We always like to stop and water down our horses and check out what going on with our friends at the Santa Elena Foundation. Dr. Andy Beall and his fine board of directors and volunteers have accomplished a great feat. The Santa Elena History Center will open this November. Come learn about this great piece of Lowcountry history. We are talking the mid 1500’s y’all. This is going to be a great attraction for locals and visitors alike to visit time and time again. If you are a history buff like me, you’ll want to go there once a month to check out their new displays and attend their interactive talks. Hey, even The Count paid another visit to the Lowcountry this past summer to help spread the word about the most famous city you’ve never heard of. Great job Andy! Ah yes! The ranch and the barn are now in sight and on our way in we stop by to see what’s happening at the Port Royal Sound Maritime Center. Have you been there yet? If not, you don’t know what you’re missing DUDE. Check out their happenings, as they are going to have a couple special events this fall. A Night On The Sound, where you can wine and dine and actually meet Phillippe Cousteau, Jacque’s grandson and then there’s the PRSFMC birthday celebration. A great family fun day that is not to be missed. Congratulations on y’all’s first successful year. We’re glad to have y’all as part of the DUDE FAMILY. Finally, we ride our horses back on the ranch and we have to quiz you DUDES and see how smart you are or aren’t. The DUDE QUIZ is surely to test your knowledge and as always, if you get all the answers right, I’ll buy you a cold beer. Before taking our horses in the barn and getting them brushed and watered down, we love to check out the Big Time entertainment in our area, so make sure you check out THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT. Crazy Man Ron White is coming to Savannah and I think I saw Def Leppard, Foreigner and Jason Aldean are all going to be in the area. ROCK, ROCK, TILL YA DROP! DUDES I’m whipped, so let’s crack open a cold one, light up a DUDE cigar and grab some grub. COOKING DUDE STYLE checks in this issue with some of my favorite things my MOM taught me in the kitchen. There’s some good stuff you need to check out because I garontee you’ll use these recipes and tips over and over again. As we sit by the fire with our boots up, we always enjoy a good laugh or three and Ole Harold, Our Largemouth Bass Editor never fails to deliver with HAROLD’S MAILBAG. That is one crazy fish DUDE. Enjoy all the photos many of our fans sent to Harold and we enjoyed getting our photo taken with some of y’all that were Hangin With The DUDE this summer. I hope everyone has a great Fall and a wonderful Holiday Season. Yeah, it’s OK to say HAPPY THANKSGIVING, MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR! Be safe, Be Smart and Do something to help out those less fortunate than you this Fall. They’ll appreciate it and you’ll feel better about yourself. SEE Y’ALL NEXT YEAR DUDE! BRAD B. MCDONALD PUBLISHER DUDE BRAD@DUDESC.COM DUDESC.COM 843-298-3827 A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR GREAT DUDE FAMILY OF ADVERTISERS, cause without them, this DUDE RIDE does not happen. “CREEPY CRAWLIES” Article and Photos BY MARVIN BOUKNIGHT
I
t’s fall and many DUDES and DUDETTES like to celebrate Halloween. Ghosts, goblins, and scary stories strike fear in our hearts and minds, but Mother Nature has a few creepy crawlies that can scare children and adults alike. Snakes, spiders, bugs, and other critters can cause even the most rational grown man or woman to scream like a little baby and jump up on the nearest counter in fear! So, in salute of Halloween, check out these creepy crawlies…
stomp on him, his extra thick exoskeleton can thwart the reactive anger caused by an incredibly painful sting. Whatever you do, heed his black and reddish orange warning coloration and don’t pick this little guy up, or you’ll be sorry! SNAKES Even the smallest snakes are scary for many folks. It seems like every snake is venomous, all are dangerous, heck, even deadly! Actually, they are a vital part of our ecosystem and control all types of insects, rodents, and some snakes, like the kingsnake, even eat other snakes, including venomous ones! Old wives’ tales, tell of snakes that have stingers on their tails, flying snakes, even snakes that can roll down a hill and strike out with its tail! My grandmother used to talk about a hoop snake that would sit on top of a hill, start to roll down the hill by grabbing its tail in its mouth and rolling after them. She even said it struck at the car’s tire with its tail! Well, with stories like these, it’s not hard to believe why some folks absolutely abhor snakes. No snakes strike more fear than rattlesnakes, especially the most common rattlesnake in the Lowcountry, the canebrake rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus). I remember relatives talking about rattlesnakes being the size of car tires and believe me; some of the eastern diamondbacks almost look that big! Are rattlesnakes dangerous? You bet DUDE. Are they deadly? They can be. Are they aggressive? Absolutely not. They are DEFENSIVE, but they do not actively chase after you and try to strike you. Now, I know this may come as a surprise and folks have probably told you many, many stories, but rattlesnakes and other venomous snakes really just want to be left alone and honestly, if someone was shooting at me or trying to cut my head off, I’d bite them too!
INSECTS Many times in nature, critters look pretty scary, but actually, looks can be deceiving. Many caterpillars look scary, but are actually harmless, like this gulf fritillary butterfly caterpillar. Multitudes of spines look threatening and appear to have venomous spines. The orange color seems to warn of imminent threat and danger, but alas, this caterpillar and its spines are completely harmless. The same is also true for the monstrous, angry-looking, massive-jawed stag beetle (Lucanus elaphus). This large beetle has huge, scary looking jaws, but the jaws cannot hurt and the beetle only uses them to body slam other male beetles during courtship. In fact, these beetles feed on rotting fruit juices and other liquids, so they don’t use their appendages for acquiring food at all. Still, all in all, they look pretty fierce! Of course, the velvet ant (Dasymutilla occidentalis) looks like a harmless, almost cute orange and black ant roaming around, but it’s actually a wingless wasp. Now this guy’s for real, with a vicious, painful sting to accompany his scary looks. Also called the “cow killer,” this insect can sting multiple times, but it only needs one, with its extremely long stinger that will “pop” you and burn like a hot poker! Even if you try to

“When you’re near it, you’ll smell it!” SPIDERS Lastly, of course, what would Halloween be without spiders? Spider webs, spider rings, blow up spiders, spiders with glowing eyes. They are everywhere! No, no, I mean it. Scientists say that the sheer number and species of spiders mean that we are never more than 5 feet away from a spider, no matter where we are. Pleasant thought, eh? The crab-bodied orb-weaver looks incredibly dangerous, with its body spines, but is only half the size of a dime and only looks scary. They build beautiful round webs throughout the woods and we’ve all probably run into the web of this little spider (and did the “wigged out” spider web dance, too, right?). Harmless, with mouth parts too small to deliver a bite, this little spider would be quite fearsome if it was much larger! Speaking of large, check out the golden silk spider (Nephila clavipes), or often referred to as the banana spider. This very large spider, with a leg span of 3-4 inches, can build a web spanning more than 5 feet! With a large body, long tufted legs, and a sizable pair of chelicerae (fangs), this spider is capable of delivering a painful bite (trust me, I know). Feeling like a bee sting, the venom will cause pain and localized swelling, but is not considered to be deadly or dangerous, just painful! Of course, the number one scariest spider in the Lowcountry is the wolf spider (Hogna carolinensis). Featured on the cover of last month’s DUDE magazine, this large spider (also the state spider of SC) is an arachnaphobe’s worst nightmare. Large eyes that glow in the light of a flashlight, big body, and long legs make this spider scary. If that’s not bad enough, the female carries the egg sack with her until the babies hatch. When they hatch, they crawl up on the mother’s body and ride around with her. When you step on her because, well, that’s what scared people do, the spider then turns into a mass of thousands of tiny spiders swarming around! Yikes!! Just like the golden silk spider, they can deliver a painful bite if handled, so the rule of thumb is...don’t. So, there you have it…scary critters, creepy crawlies! All of these critters are part of the food chain and they may look to be scary and formidable, but in fact, they have the tools they need to help them survive in the incredibly competitive world they live in. They may appear dangerous and they may be capable of injuring us, but in reality, none of the scary stinging, biting, and venomous abilities are meant for us, so try to refrain from killing everything that looks scary to you. Just remember, we are one nuclear accident away from being surrounded by giant mutated insects, snakes and spiders…think about that as you try to sleep at night…HAPPY HALLOWEEN! DUDE PROFILE: Marvin Bouknight is a South Carolina native and has lived in the Lowcountry for over 15 years. A Clemson University graduate with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Marvin has been a professional naturalist for over 20 years. BY “O’NEILL OUTSIDE” WILLIAMS
o you have a favorite fishing hat? In my days, I’ve worn all sorts of fishing hats. I’ll bet you have too. Around here, I wear a fishing hat with various names on the front. Usually it’s an O’Neill Outside logo. After all is said, advertising is everything. I buy them in bulk so they don’t cost much. I tell people that want one signed, that the hat is worth about $6 before I sign it and $3 afterward. They accept it anyway. The hats are thin and comfortable. However, my ears get sunburned and stay crusty all year long. I don’t think that’s good. Does that happen to you? I like hats though. When you have follicle challenges like I do, you tend to gravitate to hats. This challenge means I’m bald headed and have been since about the age of 23. Gail and I got married after I finished at Emory at age 21 and have been married over 50 years now. When she’s not around, I blame it on her. One of my grandfathers wore a straw hat when we were fishing in the small ponds around Loganville Georgia about 60 years ago. I was 11, he was about 65. He was a primitive Baptist preacher and wore a starched white shirt and tie, black wingtip dress shoes, a vested black pinstriped suit and white gloves with the fingers cut out when we went to the local catfish ponds to catch a few. You’d think I’d have been embarrassed about that. I wasn’t. I was just proud that he thought enough of me to take me fishing. My mother’s father wore a fedora like Indiana Jones. When we walked to the river along the railroad tracks headed to the swift waters of the Tallulah River, we’d stop and drink the cold, clear spring waters flowing from the rocks. We’d sip the sweet drops from the brim of that old hat. Sure wish I had it now. I’d wear it. We’d use cane poles with black nylon line and red wigglers dug up from around the barn. This was supposed to be a column about deer and deer hunting, so let’s get to it and make it simple. I’m about to run out of room, so I’ll be brief. Whitetail deer are lazy critters that don’t do much except, eat, sleep, look nervous, stay alive and are active only during the rut. That “staying alive thing” is a big deal and they’re good at it. Did I say sleep? It’s not my kind of sleep, no sir. Thirty minutes at a time max, usually only five or 10 and sometimes with their eyes open. Ears are always alert and hyper wary. Can you sneak up on one while he’s asleep? No, you can’t. You think you can, but you can’t. If he doesn’t move and you think you’re being extra sneaky, it’s because he thinks he’s hidden and you’ll pass by. He knows you’re there. DUDE asked me to include photos when we submit these columns, so the one here is the largest Whitetail I ever took. He scored 167 inches. He was awake when I shot him. DUDE PROFILE: O’Neill Williams. O’Neill hosts O’Neill Outside, an outdoor television series airing on FOX Sun Sports, FOX Sports Southeast, FOX Arizona, Pursuit Channel, Destination America and HuntTV. His show has been airing for 35 years. Williams also hosts O’Neill Outside Radio on WSB, which is broadcast to 38 states and is the number one outdoor based live talk show in the US. He is a member of the “Legends of the Outdoors” Hall of fame, IGFA Hall of Fame and is scheduled for induction in 2016 into the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and the Georgia Hunting and Fishing Hall of Fame. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Williams graduated from Emory University with a degree in Economics and is a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, resides with his wife, Gail, of 50+ years in the Georgia Mountains.

Kayaking, Hiking, Running, Backpacking and more!
BY CHRIS KIRBY
all is one of the greatest times of the year for hunting and fishing in a kayak DUDE. When I load up my gun, ammo and gear in my HOBIE Outback from Higher Ground Outfitters, Marsh hens are my go to birds for fun in the marsh. It’s like quail hunting on the water. The best part DUDE, is you don’t have to get up early or buy a lot of expensive stuff. Just get a good pair of polarized sunglass with a nice hat from Higher Ground Outfitters and just simply go out at high tide with your kayak, shotgun and a box or two of shells and paddle threw the marsh grass. Soon you can hear them clacking. It’s an unmistakable sound for sure. Be ready, cause when you get close enough, they will fly, point, shoot and have fun. They are good eating DUDE. Higher Ground Outfitters also has ICE MULE soft coolers that are water proof and you can put your birds in for safe keeping. Please make sure you know and abide by all the SCDNR rules and regulations when hunting this fall. If fishing is more your speed DUDE, bring your favorite fly rod or normal spinning fishing rod and you can also pick up some speckled sea-trout and some redfish/spot tail bass. I find it best to fish the oyster shell banks and the entrances to tidal cuts. Shrimp and Crab patterns for you fly fishermen and Gulp Shrimp, Gold spoons and Electric Chicken paddle-tails for you spinners. Also, the bull reds should be coming in thick this fall, so simply look for a deep channel, throw a big chunk of cut mullet or blue crab on bottom and wait for the big one to start screaming your line off the reel. Don’t forget to check your bait every 5 to 10 minutes or so, to make sure the crabs haven’t robbed you. On occasion, I hunt and fish during the same outing. The locals call it, Cast and Blast. Nothing is more satisfying than paddling my kayak way back in the grass where the boats can’t go and coming home with a few Marsh Hens and a couple freshly caught tailing redfish. That’s about as fresh as a Low country Surf and Turf can get. When done, I head in and clean the harvest. One of my favorite and very simple ways to prepare marsh hens is to slice some jalapeños, put them on the birds, wrap them in bacon and throw them on the grill. For the redfish just fillet with scales on, throw them on the grill scales down butter and spices on top cook until done (redfish on the half shell). If you have never done either this way, you’re missing out DUDE. Can’t get much easier that that. See ya on the river

OPERATION GUARDIAN ANGEL Brought to you by the
SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES BY BRAD MCDONALD
M
with assistance from EARL POPE (SCDNR)
any faithful followers of DUDE know how much I love, appreciate and respect our great natural resources of the Lowcountry, so it really disturbs me when I hear stories about opportunists disobeying laws and taking advantage of our pristine natural resources. Well DUDE, this is a story about such a non-natural resource respecter and how SCDNR set him straight, so to speak. SCDNR set him straight, so to speak. For obvious reasons, I’ll withhold the name of this individual, however, throughout the article I will refer to him as SCDNR DUDE. He is to be commended for his valiant effort in bringing this criminal to justice and it was nice to meet you SCDNR DUDE! DUDE and fellow anglers enjoyed the summer Hilton Head Island and Beaufort fishing clubs where we got a personal SCDNR account of this clever necessary interdiction. CHECK THIS STORY OUT DUDE A Conservation Officer exemplifies the definition of what it takes to enforce the Game and Fish Laws of South Carolina or in his terms “being a Game Warden.” SCDNR DUDE is an Officer has dedicated over 12 years of his career to his job. Every morning when he puts on the uniform he represents his department in a professional manner. SCDNR DUDE started his career in the upstate of South Carolina where he spent the first 12 years of his career working as a Conservation Officer. During that time SCDNR DUDE was a leader in his work unit and trained new officers as they come into the field. In 2014 he transferred to Hampton County, where he is currently assigned. In the last couple of years, there has been a big problem with recreational cast netters catching shrimp and selling them, some from out of county and out of state. The process of catching the shrimp has become an art form and the public is starting to catch on with this trend. The way to catch the shrimp is called “Deep Holing” where you modify a cast net with a special tape that helps the net open up until it hits the bottom of the river floor. Legal, licensed, SCDNR Salt Water Licensees, Fisher-dudes use their depth finders to “mark” the shrimp and then throw the cast net on top of the shrimp. When the shrimp are plentiful, most experienced cast netters can catch up to 20 pounds of shrimp per cast. The limit on shrimp caught with a cast net is 48 quarts per day with heads on and 29 quarts with heads off. As you can see, when the shrimp are plentiful, it does not take long to catch a limit. On an average trip, there can be around 30 to 40 boats throwing cast nests on just one hole, basically wiping them completely out, which is not ideal, as these are big brooding stock row shrimp. The best time of the year to catch the shrimp with taped nets occurs NOW, between September and December. During the month of September, SCDNR DUDE would go out on his day off and try to learn this skill of deep holing and get a limit of shrimp for himself. As he was out there in the river, he noticed a small group of people that could really catch the shrimp, while others struggled to even catch a limit. SCDNR DUDE honed in on this, being the good Game Warden he is, therefore, he ran it up his chain of
10
command if he could work this as a covert operation. The decision was granted for SCDNR DUDE to work this group of fisherman, out of uniform, but he was to report back to his supervisor every day of his findings. SCDNR DUDE was given 2 weeks to see if he could try and get in with this fisherman, since he was a new officer in this area and nobody knew his face. Going in the river every day, he met one individual that could catch the shrimp and was very good at it. SCDNR DUDE then started to meet the subject in the river on a regular basis and developed a relationship with him. They eventually exchanged numbers and would talk to each other on a daily basis. SCDNR DUDE was given the green light to continue the investigation and see where it would lead. Each day, the information that SCDNR DUDE would get was given to his supervisor. When the shrimp would not show up in the river, due to a new or full moon, SCDNR DUDE would go fishing with the subject. The subject that was being investigated was also an avid fisherman. They would also go out at night time to gig flounder. The subject that was being investigated, did not hold a regular job and depended on fishing and shrimping as his source of income. When he would go fishing or shrimping, he would sell his catch to local people that he could trust. SCDNR DUDE the subject, as he was over fishing catch limits of Redfish, as well as undersized and oversized Redfish. On one occasion, SCDNR DUDE and the subject went out at night to gig flounder, but the wind picked up and they were not able see any fish, so on the way back to the boat ramp, the subject advised SCDNR DUDE to pull up to some crab traps. The crab traps were owned by commercial crabbers and the subject pulled 10 of the traps and took the crabs. Out of the ten traps, he pulled out of the river, he cut the rope on six of them and kept them for himself. Once they made it back to the boat ramp, the subject kept three of them for himself and gave SCDNR DUDE the other three to keep. The subject used the crabs that he took to help pay for his rent where he was staying. SCDNR DUDE with the subject during the transaction of this event. After SCDNR DUDE left the subject’s house, he called his supervisor to meet him at the boat ramp. Once at the boat ramp, SCDNR DUDE his supervisor went back into the river to see if they could find the crab trap buoys that the subject cut and threw into the marsh for evidence. After a thorough search, all six buoys were found and kept as evidence in the ongoing case. In October, when the shrimp were plentiful, the subject had caught a limit of shrimp and needed to sell them. SCDNR DUDE and the subject rode around to different businesses and sold the shrimp as well as some fish to his customers. SCDNR DUDE did an excellent job getting each sell on audio and video recordings for evidence. This same process was done repeatedly, during the month of October and each sell was documented by audio and video recordings. During November, the subject took one of SCDNR Covert Officers fishing with him and the subject offered to sell him shrimp the following week. The buy was set up by the subject and SCDNR Covert officer bought two coolers full of shrimp at different dates.

Once the shrimp were caught the next week SCDNR DUDE and the subject met SCDNR Covert officer at a particular place and one cooler full of shrimp were sold. Two days later, the subject sold SCDNR Covert Officer along with SCDNR DUDE another cooler full of shrimp, as well as some Redfish. The shrimp and fish were taken and logged in as evidence for the case. Both transactions were videoed and kept as evidence for the case. On December 3, 2014, the subject was arrested on 31 warrants and booked into jail. The warrants consisted of Catching over the Limit of Redfish, Tampering with Commercial Equipment, No Wholesale Seafood License, Unlawful Sale of Shrimp, Unlawful Sale of Game Fish and Obtaining Saltwater Fishery Taken or Sold Unlawfully. Once the subject was arrested, there was a team of uniformed Officers that went to individuals that bought shrimp and fish from the subject. Each person was interviewed about the purchase of seafood that was caught illegally. The subjects that were proven they bought shrimp illegally by the audio and video evidence were charged as well. This case was the first time anyone had went undercover to work this type of detail. SCDNR DUDE went above and beyond his duties to work this case. He spent many hours day and night in the river to make this case. He sacrificed his family and friends to see that this case was properly investigated. Officers learned while he was working this case, how technology has changed the way the SCDNR needs to work this type of activity. As SCDNR DUDE was in his Covert role the subject, he would get phone calls as uniformed officers were putting their boats in the river at the boat ramp. The cell phones would ring off the hook in the river when the Game Warden aka SCDNR DUDE up. Having SCDNR DUDE with the subject in the river, made it easier to watch the shrimp until they were sold each time. The commercial crabbers were very pleased to know that the SCDNR got their crab traps back after they were stolen by said thief. All in all, I do believe the public was pleased and it sent a message that the SCDNR does care about the resources of South Carolina as we are actively working these types of activities. SCDNR DUDE not only investigated this big case that took a lot of his time but after he finished this investigation, he also made Night Hunting cases, duck bait cases, turkey bait cases and over the limit of fish cases. SCDNR DUDE is a natural leader in his work unit and it shows with his activity. THIS DUDE leads his unit with activity but also helps new officers with learning how to be a Game Warden. He is always willing to help other officers with cases and he is called upon by his fellow officers to assist with cases because of his experience and his positive attitude. Be glad we have DUDES like this taking care of our valuable natural resources. If you see something or someone that seems out of line, CALL SCDNR. These DUDES remind me of our great military. Steadfast, concerned, integral with much resolve, is the way I’d surmise SCDNR DUDES. Nice meeting you DUDES and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE to OUR GREAT STATE! I had to ask SCDNR DUDE personally, WHY DID YOU DO THIS? His response speaks volumes. “We mainly want the public to understand that a lot of times they don’t see us out there other than the uniformed officers doing everyday patrols, however our presence is real and we do fight to keep things fair for our sportsmen of South Carolina, even when it gets a little dangerous. ( example the night of the crab pot thefts) “

OFFICERS CALL (PROFESSIONAL MILITARY EDUCATION)
PRESENTS PULITZER PRIZE NOMINATED AUTHOR,
ROBERT CORAM BY BRAD MCDONALD
COLONEL PETER “BAMBI” BUCK, COMMANDER OF MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT, ROBERT CORAM & LIEUTENANT COLONEL SEAN “JIMI” HENRICKSON
T
his past Summer I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a great Officers Call event at the Officers Club on the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort as a humble honorary member of the Lowcountry Military Officers Association of America (LCMOAA) in the company of some of America’s Finest, our awesome Marine Corps Pilots. I always love going to these Professional Military Education (PME) events because it allows me to co-mingle and have a few cold ones with our boys. Not all, but most enjoy a cold one before these great learning events. It’s great turning one up with you DUDES and Thank You for your service to our country and keeping us safe. Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Commander, Colonel Peter “Bambi” Buck and Lieutenant Colonel Sean “Jimi” Henrickson welcomed the uniformed pilots and introduced us to Mr. Robert Coram. WOW! A Pulitzer prize nominated author of many biographies of some great military American Heroes, many who are Marines, yeah I was impressed immediately. This soft spoken intellectual gentleman immediately captivated his audience with his acknowledgement and show of his true appreciation for their service, as well as giving them a big thank you for allowing him to visit both of Beaufort’s great Marine Corps bases during his stay. Mr. Coram spoke succinctly and candidly to these awesome aviators. He was about to introduce us to three amazing United States of America military men who are bound together by the Marine Corps, but he most importantly wanted these Marines to know that they were bound together by a common virtue and that virtue is INTEGRITY. These three men were John Boyd, George Day and Victor 12
Krulak. Two Air Force Colonels and a Marine Corps Lieutenant General. First up, Mr. Coram’s book about John Boyd, “BOYD The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War.” Boyd was the impetus behind the F-15, F-16 and F-18. Boyd believed his ideas could revolutionize the Air Force. As a young Captain, Boyd wrote and aerial attack study, therefore codifying air to air combat. As a Major, Boyd developed the energy-maneuverability theory, a way to quantify performance of America’s aircraft and her adversaries. If you’ve heard someone talk of the OODA LOOP, they are talking about Boyd’s work. His most important contribution was a briefing called, “Patterns of Conflict,” which was a history of warfare from the beginning of time. Boyd’s ideas have a profound impact on our modern Marine Corps. In the mid 70’s, post Vietnam, the U.S. military was at a low point with poor morale and it had been characterized by the media of being a “Hollow Military.” We needed more than a coat of new paint on old ideas, we needed something new that worked. There seemed to be a lack of leadership. Enter, Colonel MIchael Wyly of the Marine Corps. After Wyly’s tours in Vietnam, he became in charge of the tactics section at the amphibious warfare school at Quantico in the late 70’s. Colonel Wyly invited Colonel Boyd to deliver a briefing to all classes at Quantico. This briefing was suppose to last about 5 hours. Imagine an Air Force pilot telling a bunch of mud Marines how to do anything. Boyd talked of pivotal battles and commended attacking Marines, as their combat units should be like water going downhill. He spoke of such things as; deception, getting in to the enemy’s decision making, how commanders should lead from
sc.com
Fall 2015
the front and various other ways to apply strength against weakness. As Boyd continued to mesmerize these Marines, the briefing went in to it’s 7th hour, then 8th hour and they gathered around him like an ancient warrior reincarnated. Boyd wanted to change the way the military thought about modern warfare. Well, the word about Boyd spread rather quickly and Major General, Al Gray, Commander of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp LeJeune, became a big fan of Boyd and invited him multiple times to deliver his briefings. An Air Force pilot, Boyd, had given the Marine Corps a new way to think about warfare, which came with great irony, as the Air Force had dismissed Boyd as an oddball kook. The Marines took Boyd’s advice, but the Army dismissed them and stayed with their high diddle diddle, straight up the middle philosophies. Boyd’s method quickly out-shined the Army’s ways during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada with the Army staying pinned down at the airport as the Marine Corps raced all over the island and soon owned it, as if it was theirs. According to Mr. Coram, General Ray Smith will attest to this. These same philosophies worked during the first Gulf War, where the 1st Marine Division went far behind enemy lines and moved like water going downhill, while the enemy sat there worrying about their flanks. General Mike Myatt will attest to this according to Mr. Coram. Boyd’s ideas created ambiguity, deception and confusion on the enemy. The best example of John Boyd’s ideas working is when fifteen Iraqi divisions surrendered to two division of Marines. Secretary of Defense, Dick Cheney summons Boyd out of retirement to help plan Operation Desert Storm, which was an overwhelming successful military battle. Cheney actually threw out General Schwartzkkopf’s army idea of a massive head on assault and went with Boyd’s idea of massive airpower upfront, have the Marines fake a amphibious landing and then have the army throw a massive left hook, creating the classic envelopment of the enemy. As history would have it, Boyd’s idea only took about a hundred hours. Hell, it was almost over before it began DUDE. Boyd passed away in March of 1997 and his books and papers are in the library at Quantico and are still used today. There is a final wing planned for the National Museum of the Marine Corps and that wing will be called “The Quantico Renaissance,” dedicated to Boyd, an Air Force Pilot who realized that there was something special and different about the Marine Corps. After Robert Coram wrote his book about Boyd, he realized that the Marine Corps has a different ethos from other branches of the military and therefore he wanted his next book to be about a Marine. Well, Mr. Coram was inundated with ideas about possible subjects, however he simply could not turn down the idea of doing a book about Air Force Colonel, George “Bud” Day. “AMERICAN PATRIOT The Life and Wars of Colonel Bud Day” was that book. Bud Day dropped out of high school the day after Pearl Harbor and joined the Marine Corps. After the war, he went to college and law school and was commissioned in the Air Force, where he spent 24 years. He was a quiet man, low key and soft spoken, much like Mr. Coram. Bud married his high school sweetheart and ended up having four children. In 1967, he was a Major and stood up a top of a secret outfit, Commando Sabre. His call sign, Misty. His job was to locate AAA sites and SAMS that the north had deployed around the DMZ in his F-100. Misty was also called upon to find fuel dumps and truck parks, so he could call in strike aircraft to disrupt the flow of supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail. All of his missions were high risk flown north of the DMZ. Arguably the most heavily defended real estate on earth. Many of these missions lasted six hours plus. Bud Day wrote the procedures for these Mistys and they were; the hard deck is 4,000 feet, keep a high mach speed and never go over the same target twice on the same mission. These were very aggressive missions and dangerous to say the least. Of the 157 Mistys, 22% were shot down. Misty 1 was Day’s bird and after seeing a AAA site, he refueled and came back to the AO screaming at 500 knots at 1,000 feet. Major Day confirmed the missile sighting, however he was hit by AAA and had to eject. He broke his arm in two places, dislocated his knee and his oxygen mask hit him in the eye causing a hematoma, pretty much blinding him. Major Day was captured immediately. He was now a POW. After convincing his captors he was all but dead, he managed to escape with nothing but a canteen of water. Forty-two years old, 30 miles behind enemy lines and injuries that he should have been in the hospital for, Bud Day spent the next few weeks living on frogs and berries. He managed to survive two B-52 ARC strikes and eluded numerous enemy patrols. Day had lost 20 pounds and was delusional by the time he crossed over the border in to south Vietnam and was within a mile of the Marine Corps Base at Con Then when he was recaptured by a Viet Cong ambush. Back across the border he went to the Hanoi Hilton aka the Hoa Lo prison. Here he would meet his roommate Senator John McCain. Years of torture and beatings continued until Bud was near death. Major Day in terrible physical shape was continually lashed and he tried to stick to giving them nothing but name, rank and serial number but he was broken. Though he knew he was dying, he stuck to the simple phrase of “Return With Honor.” After Ho Chi Minh died, POWs entered a period of tranquility but not Day, as he complained of non-adherence to Geneva Convention rules. This gained him solitary in squalor unimaginable. His fellow POWs labeled Day as the “Tough Resistor.” Finally, 1973 rolled around and the POWs returned to America and debriefed. The word from all the POWs was that Bud Day was the toughest man God ever made. Colonel Day was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Air Force Cross, Dozens of Combat medals and basically became the most decorated living American officer. The Air force named buildings after him and
Fall 2015
Air Force Four Star Generals called him “SIR!” BUD DAY was a Air Force icon. While he was being interviewed by Mr. Coram in the presence of his wife, who had never heard the details of his days of capture, Colonel Day with tears running down his face, answered the question, “Where did you find the backbone and guts to survive?” by placing his arm on Mr. Coram’s shoulder and said, “Robert, Everything I ever learned that was really important, I learned as an enlisted Marine in World War II.” Those words in Mr. Coram’s book, prompted a parade for Colonel Day at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington. It was the proudest moment of his life. Now, Robert Coram knew he had to write a book about a Marine, but who? Several people asked him, “How in the hell can you write a book about a Marine when you are not a Marine?” Well, he sough the advice of General Charles Krulak, former Commandant of the Marine Corps. Coram stated he wanted to write a book about a Marine that made a Significant Contribution. General Krulak said, “You need to write a book about my father.” This is how the book, “BRUTE the Life of Victor Krulak” happened. Krulak was commissioned from the Naval Academy in 1934 and went to China as an intelligence officer in 1937. Once there, Lieutenant Krulak learned the plan of the Japanese to flank the defenders with an amphibious landing, he borrowed a tug boat from the navy and set sail down the Yangtze River with American flag flying. He sailed in to chaos of an amphibious landing while taking pictures and making sketches of the Japanese landing craft. A pretty brave DUDE! In later years, then Captain Krulak used those sketches and pictures to design and build the Drop-Bow Landing Craft, LCVP. General Eisenhower would later state that the LCVP that Krulak designed and built, won the war for America on D-Day on the beaches of Normandy. Once in World War II, then Lieutenant Colonel Krulak, commanded a parachute battalion in the Pacific. He would later retrain his battalion as a raider battalion and he took them ashore on the island of Choiseul as a diversionary attack for the invasion of Bouganville. Part of his force had to be evacuated from the beach with Naval PT boats, one of which was skippered by a young naval officer named, John F. Kennedy. For his heroic efforts he was awarded the Navy Cross by Admiral Bull Halsey. After the war, Colonel Krulak became de-facto leader of the Chowder Society, which was a group of Lieutenant Colonels that fought the effort of other leaders to subsume the Marine Corps in to other branches of the military. Hard to believe, but it was a very real threat that the Marine Corps came very close to extinction. Obviously, they succeeded in their effort. The use of helicopters in the Marine Corps was developed by Krulak. He saw where they could be useful now that they could travel at 200 mph vs 90, they could carry a dozen Marines, instead of two passengers, they could gather intelligence, lay communications wire, rescue downed pilots and deliver men and equipment in to hot LZs, Landing Zones. The Marines did all that and more with helicopters in Korea. The movie, “WE WERE SOLDIERS” with Mel Gibson leading the 7th Cavalry helicopters in to combat, falsely gave the Army credit for being the first to take helicopters in to combat, however this template was cut by Brute Krulak and the Marine Corps a decade earlier. In 1967, Brute Krulak was a rare 3 Star Lieutenant General in the Marine Corps and he was top of the list to be the next Commandant of the Marine Corps. He then decided to take his 5’4” frame to Washington and tell the 6’4” President Johnson that he was not conducting the war in a proper fashion. He told LBJ if he didn’t change his ways, he would lose the war and the next election. Brute thought this action would surely get him fired but his INTEGRITY was more important to him. Well, LBJ physically pushed him out of the oval office and named Leonard Chapman Jr as the commandant. Brute never got his 4th star from President Johnson and he never became commandant but he is remembered for being one of the true giants of the Marine Corps. BRUTE is a Marine Corps legend and remembered mostly for being a Man of Integrity. At the end of this riveting talk, Robert Coram looked in to the eyes of these proud Marine Corps pilots and told them to stop thinking about promotions and rather, think about doing something significant. “Do it for your country, not for you to be liked by your superiors. Be true to yourself!” Special thanks to Colonel Peter “Bambi” Buck and Lieutenant Colonel Sean “Jimi” Henrickson for including me in this intriguing OC/PME and allowing me to meet Robert Coram. I think many will enjoy DUDE sharing a brief synopsis of some of his great military biographies. Also, another special thanks to Mr. Coram himself, for helping me with my notes from his talk, so I could get things factually correct in his portrayal of these great men. It is obvious that Robert’s time writing for the Atlanta Journal and being Press Secretary of the Governor of Georgia has served him well. His Pulitzer prize nomination came from his writings on the drug trafficking business in the Caribbean. As a pseudo writer myself, I love his quote, “If a reader puts one of my books down after reading the first page, or the first ten pages, it is my fault!” When Coram is not writing, he can usually be found fly fishing on the Georgia coast down around Cumberland Island where he once served as a Park Ranger. If you are interested in learning more about Robert Coram and perhaps would like to purchase one or all of his books, including the three he talked about, then go to his website; www.robertcoram.com There you can find a direct link to Amazon.com to assist you in obtaining some of his intriguing writings. LOWCOUNTRY MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA VISITS THE AIR DOMINANCE TRAINING CENTER IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA
104th Fighter Wing exercise
ATLANTIC SPEAR BY BRAD MCDONALD
T
his summer I joined some of my fellow Lowcountry MOAA members on an outing to visit the Air Dominance Training Center in Savannah, Georgia. The 104th Fighter Wing was the old outfit of LCMOAA President, Major General Mike Akey. Lieutenant Colonel Bob Freeman USA served as our navigator and we arrived on a very sultry summer morning. We were greeted by Lieutenant Colonel Brenda Hendricksen USAF, Executive Officer of the 104th Fighter WIng and Staff Sergeant Matt Benedetti who was obviously camera ready. As the rest of our group arrived and gathered in mass, we boarded a mini-bus and headed towards the tarmac. There we were introduced to Lieutenant Colonel Sean Halbrook who is the the 104th Fighter Wing Operations Support Flight Commander. This is one impressive DUDE and he began what was to be a very intriguing informative tour of this facility and what this exercise, ATLANTIC SPEAR was all about. Before we walked outside on the hardstand which comprises the jets parking area, we were all given a fresh pair of ear plugs and believe you me, we needed them. The 104th Fighter Wing is stationed at Barnes Air National Guard Base, in Westfield, Massachusetts and it consists of the very awesome and lethal F-15C Eagle. For two weeks, this fine group of Americans participated in this very robust training exercise that is multi-faceted and designed to test and enhance the air to air dogfighting capabilities of these great Air Force pilots. During these two weeks, these F-15C’s got to integrate with other aircraft across the military including units from Georgia, Texas, South Carolina, Florida, Oregon and California and these weapons systems included FA-18 Super Hornets, F-22 Raptors, F-16 Falcons and F-35B JSF Lightning II’s. One reason these fighter wings love training at the Savannah Air Dominance Center is they can operate over 40 aircraft in a vast coastal 60 X 150 mile unrestricted airspace with no supersonic or altitude restrictions. These birds are capable of speeds over Mach 2 (1,500 mph) and can fly comfortably at 60,000 feet waiting to pounce on their prey. Another great asset of this very integrated facility is the infrastructure that allows the pilots to debrief and relive the simulated battle in real time, including each jets’ make, speed, altitude and direction. It was pretty cool to see the sped up version of that morning’s battle. (8) F-15C Eagles were in charge of protecting a particular base simulated by a particular latitude. One by one, the F-15C’s turned their foes home, either scared of being shot down or actually shot down. (No DUDE, not really!) It was amazing to hear the Lieutenant Colonel describe all the tactical maneuvers and operations during these simulated engagements and it was pretty obvious that these 104the Fighter Wing pilots frequently outmaneuvered their adversaries and demonstrated a high level of expertise that left little doubt who was the victor. We did notice that an FA-18 Hornet, most likely piloted by a Marine Corps pilot from MCAS (Beaufort) did manage to get by the “Do not let them across line” and
14
the Lieutenant Colonel said, “That’s not good, we will certainly be discussing that in length at tonight’s debriefing of the battle.” It was amazing to hear Lieutenant Colonel Halbrook show us that the entire battle was integrated and recorded, so the whole exercise could be reviewed and analyzed by all the participating pilots. This training exercise is also very valuable for the ground crews that take care of these big birds. Up close, these F-15C are a lot bigger than the FA-18 Hornets the Blue Angels fly. They get to practice getting them landed safely and parked, as well as getting them ready with pilots loaded and headed for takeoff. Being on the runway and watching two of these F-15C’s take off 15 seconds after each other was breathtaking. DUDE they were out of sight so quick after take off it made your head spin. Watching a McDonnell Douglas F15-C land and pull up right in front of us with the pilot waving was awesome and loud is simply the wrong word for the noise those two Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engines make just before shutting them down. Lieutenant Colonel Halbrook gave us a up close and personal tour of this 75,000 pound bad bird. It has 6 hard points that can pretty much carry any of our toys (USAF weapons inventory) such as; infrared homing air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-9 Sidewinders and AIM-120 AMRAAM’s. Most recently, the F-15K version have been equipped with the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System that can deploy weapons such as the AGM-84K SLAMER (a precision guided air launch cruise missile), AGM84H Harpoon Block II (an all-weather over-the-horizon anti-ship missile) and the JASSM (low observable cruise missile with 2,,000 pounds of boom). She also has an internally mounted General Electric M61A1 20 mm cannon that carries approximately 700 rounds for close enemy aircraft and softer targets on the ground. “We do about 1 second bursts that spit out 20 or so rounds!” states the Lieutenant Colonel. YIKES! The F-15 Strike Eagle was designed in the 1980’s to be a long range, high speed interdiction platform and it is now in its sixth generational design. The air-to-air lethality of the F-15 is without question, as they have logged over 100 aerial combat victories and recorded no losses in air-to-air combat. Atlantic Spear allowed personnel of the 104th Fighter WIng to test their learned skills and to be prepared for any future contingencies. These training exercises allow our Air National Guard to enhance their mission readiness in case they are called on to go in to action or go on deployments. I want to Thank Lieutenant Colonels, Brenda Hendricksen and Sea Halbrook for their time they spend with us showing our Lowcountry Military Officers Association of America members how capable and ready our Air National Guard are in case there is the need for an Atlantic Spear one day. Also a big Thanks to Staff Sergeant Matt Benedetti for the great photos. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY, LADY & GENTLEMEN!

T
he Simpson Cub team got qualified, taught and well fed this past Summer on gorgeous Dataw Island. We were honored to have been asked to join and meet these fine American Wounded Veterans this past summer by Glenn Blackburn after one of their qualifying rounds for a Lowcountry Boil down at the spectacular Dataw Island marina. What a great event the Simpson Cup has become over the years. These American Wounded Veteran DUDES are serious about their golf. We salute each and every one of them and thank them for their sacrifice and service to our great country. It is an honor to be one of your fellow Americans and it was an honor to simply be in your company. Thanks to Al Sears for photos, Alexandra Leung, Communications Director for Dataw Island for the information and a BIG DUDE TIP OF THE HAT and great job by, Chris Fearn, Assistant Professional at Dataw Island Golf Club who served as our (USA Team Coach). “I was surprised and completely thrilled,” Chris said. “I’m so honored that the people who inspire me so much will allow me to coach them for this huge tournament!” The military life is difficult and full of sacrifice. Veterans and service members regularly put duty, honor and country before family, friends and personal wishes. For many, the sacrifice extends well beyond time served. “Many veterans return from the battlefield with emotional scars, physical issues resulting from injuries, combat wounds and traumatic brain injuries,” said Glen Blackburn, Veteran, On Course Foundation sup-
16
porter and Dataw Island resident. In 2012, the On Course Foundation began the Simpson Cup, an annual Ryder Cup styled tournament between 12 injured servicemen and veterans from the UK and USA. The tournament is named after its founder, John Simpson, the former Senior Vice President of International Management Group (IMG), who has only one fully functioning leg as a result of suffering from polio as a child. “We are proud to be able to host the Simpson Cup Qualifier every year,” Dave Britton, Dataw Island’s Director of Golf, said. “Many veterans live here on Dataw and the membership is very supportive of military charities and foundations.” The U.S. team, captained by former Marine sergeant Thomas Brooks, won the Simpson Cup last year at Congressional Country Club, in Potomac, Md., which has hosted three U.S. Open championships. Team USA tried to defend the Cup at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England, which is part of the Open Championship rotation in the United Kingdom this past September but unfortunately came up 1/2 point short of retaining the cup. UK 9.5 to USA 8.5 (9 points would have tied and retained the cup). DUDE, winning is not what this worthwhile event is all about. It’s about showing some of our boys our American appreciation and giving them a slice of that American Pie that our military fights for everyday. MAY GOD BLESS ALL THOSE IN OUR MILITARY! That includes those Veterans we’ve lost, our wounded Veterans, all active duty and retired Veterans and maybe most importantly, those that gave the ultimate sacrifice and died for their country.

ARRHYTHMIA ALLIANCE
GAVIN QUANCE CAMPAIGN BY BRAD MCDONALD
T
his is a saturnine tragic story of a family losing a young loved one that had his whole life in front of him and this horrendous event has been turned in to of very positive movement in this young DUDE’s name. Last summer, young Gavin Quance was found unconscious in his family’s pool and unfortunately could not be resuscitated though many local heroes gave it their best shot. Once the young unconscious lad was found, a call went out to 911 and the first on the scene was a couple of Bluffton’s finest, police officers. They preformed CPR for roughly 5 minutes before EMS could arrive. Once EMS arrived and took over CPR, well equipped with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), it was unfortunately too late and young Gavin was pronounced dead on arrival to Coastal Carolina Hospital. Now only the GOOD LORD knows if the Bluffton Police Department officers would have been equipped with an AED, whether that would have saved him, but it certainly might have helped save young Gavin’s life. When Arrhythmia Alliance (The Heart Rhythm Charity) heard of this tragedy they contacted the Quance family to invite them to join their campaign to keep Gavin’s name alive as well as to potentially save future lives The Arrhythmia Alliance – Gavin Quance Campaign is raising funds to donate an AED for every Bluffton Police car. Having this valuable life saving piece of equipment in every Bluffton Police car may very well save your life one day DUDE. CPR alone can increase your chance of survival by up to 9%, however when CPR is used with an AED, the survivability rate soars to 50-70%. And, it is for this reason the ARRHYTHMIA ALLIANCE - GAVIN QUANCE CAMPAIGN which is affiliated with STARS-US Inc. (Syncope Trust And Reflex anoxic Seizures) is trying to raise $50,000 to have an AED in each Bluffton Police vehicle. STARS charity was founded in the United Kingdom in 1993 by Trudie Lobban MBE after her
22
daughter, Francesca, was diagnosed with Reflex Anoxic Seizures. The need to establish STARS in the United States was evident. In June, 2006, STARS officially became a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization and began their ever so important mission. Today, STARS receives 8,000 requests a month from people in need with similar situations such as young Francesca. Sadly Francesca’s father suffered a sudden cardiac death only seven years ago – so this campaign is also very close to her heart. We recently took part in a fund raiser benefit car wash held in the name of the ARRHYTHMIA ALLIANCE - GAVIN QUANCE CAMPAIGN by our good friends and DUDE FAMILY MEMBERS at HILTON HEAD LEXUS. Thank You Jim Mollica and Jim Quance! All the proceeds went towards the placement of AED’s in all Bluffton Police Cars. Chief Joey Reynolds states, “The Bluffton Police Department is excited to partner with the Arrhythmia Alliance team and the Quance family to equip our patrol vehicles with AEDs. The loss of Gavin has impacted the lives of people within the community as well as our officers. The addition of AEDs in our patrol vehicles is another way in which we can provide high quality services to our community and it’s visitors.” DUDE would like to salute all those involved in this great campaign and I would personally like to send my thoughts and prayers to the Quance Family for the loss of young Gavin. It’s nice to know the young man did not die in vain and his name and this campaign may very well save many lives here in Beaufort County in the future. If you are interested in donating to this very worthwhile cause, Please visit; http://www.GoFundMe.com/AA-GavinQuance to donate online. Look for future local fund raisers in the name of the ARRHYTHMIA ALLIANCE -GAVIN QUANCE CAMPAIGN. Let’s honor this young man and possibly help someone’s life in the future. COOKING
STYLE!
THESE ARE FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS! My MOM taught me how to cook when I was a little DUDE and we’ve spent many hours in the kitchen together since. She has taught me some great techniques and recipes that I thought I would share with y’all, as I use them all the time. ENJOY! THANKS MOM! DUDE, KNOW HOW TO HANDLE YOUR MEAT These are tried and true, never fail perfect ways to cook your Filet Mignons and Prime Rib. FILETS must be 2”, season as you wish, applewood bacon wrapped around is optional, in a really hot cast iron skillet, sear (but don’t burn) your room temperature filets exactly 5 minutes, flip them and place in pre-heated 425 degree oven. 5 minutes for rare, 7 medium rare, 8 medium and you want to cook it anymore, go have a burnt hamburger DUDE. PRIME RIB cooking recipe is as easy as it gets. Should be at least 5 pounds. Season as you wish, I like Lawry’s Season and Garlic salt, fresh cracked pepper, freshly picked diced rosemary and yes sugar. Helps caramelize and seal the fat. Place room temperature Prime Rib in pre-heated 375 degree oven for one hour and turn off oven. DO NOT OPEN! When you’re getting close to being ready to eat, turn oven back on to 300 degrees, 45 minutes rare, 48 minutes medium rare, 50 minutes medium. If you want to cook it any more, go have a burnt hamburger DUDE.
1/8 cup of Madera wine, couple dashes of Texas Pete. Place in small serving size ramekins and cover with clarified butter to seal. Refrigerate. Lasts up to a week.
HAROLD’S VENISON BALLS • 1/2 pound of ground venison • 1/2 pound of ground pork • 2 small white onions minced • 1 clove of garlic minced • 1/4 cup of parsley chopped fine
• 1/2 cup of freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs • 1 egg • 2t of salt • 1/2t of pepper
Mix thoroughly by hand. Should make 24 balls and then sauté them in 2 cups of canola oil. Put in your favorite spaghetti sauce. They do freeze well.
DUDE DEEP FRIED TURKEY RUB
JAMAICAN PIQUE SPICED VINEGAR It’s fall and that means fresh collard greens to many of use DUDES. Without a doubt one of my favorite recipes is the Creamed Collard Greens at the Lunch Lady, however when I cook up a big pot with onions and bacon grease, I love putting this stuff on them. In an old Mason Jar, 5 Habanero or Scotch Bonnet peppers chopped, 1 carrot pealed and julienne sliced, 1 onion diced, 4 big whole cloves of garlic peeled, 1 inch grated off fresh ginger root, 2 sprigs of fresh thyme and 1 3/4 cups of apple cider vinegar. Allow at least a week before using.
MOM’S CHICKEN LIVER PATE One pound of chicken livers, covered and boiled with 1t of peppercorns, 1t whole cloves, one bay leaf, one clove of garlic and some fresh parsley, until all pink is gone. Strain. Put them in food processor with; 2 sticks of butter, 1t salt, 1 small onion, 1t dry mustard, 1/4t nutmeg,
30
We actually stole this from Martha Stewart when she was in jail. In your food processor put; 25 Bay leaves, 3t’s of dried thyme, 3t’s of dried oregano, 1 1/2t’s of whole peppercorns, 3T’s of Tony Chachere’s Hot Creole seasoning, 2t’s of garlic powder. Spin it up good until bay leaves are well diced. Rub your fresh or defrosted turkey generously inside and out. Use all of it DUDE! Refrigerate over night. Bring to room temperature next day. Deep fry completely submersed with peanut oil at 360 degrees. Do not exceed this temp. Best gauge is 3 minutes a pound. 15 pound bird should cook in 45 minutes. Try and then go slap your Mama! Sorry MOM! If you ever want to share a DUDE RECIPE with our readers, feel free to send them to me DUDE!

Dear Harold, As I age, I’ve realized some things that I didn’t when I was younger: I don’t need anger management. I need people to stop pissing me off. My people skills are just fine. It’s my tolerance of idiots that needs work. The biggest lie I tell myself is, “I don’t need to write that down. I’ll remember it.” I talk to myself because, sometimes, I need expert advice. Sometimes I roll my eyes out loud. When I was a child, I thought nap time was punishment. Now, it’s like a mini vacation. The day the world runs out of wine/beer/vodka is just too terrible to think about . I like my middle finger best because it always sticks up for me! Even duct tape can’t fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound! Wouldn’t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes and then come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller? If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would’ve put them on my knees. When the kids text me “ plz “ which is shorter than the word “please”, I text back “no” which is shorter than “yes”. At my age, “getting lucky” means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for. Chocolate comes from cocoa which is a tree, which makes it a plant, which means it’s salad, almost. Signed, Older Life Demands Fairly Attentive Rational Thought Dear OLDFART, Well DUDE, sounds like you have some issues. You’re only as old as your mind allows you to be. Enjoy life like I do. Swim around the lake and steal rednecks bait. The expressions on their faces when I steal their new $10 lure.....PRICELESS! HAROLD Dear Harold, I heard AT&T fired President John Walter after nine months, saying he lacked intellectual leadership. He received a $26 million severance package. Perhaps it’s not Walter who’s lacking intelligence. Signed, Show Me The Money Dear SMTM, GOD BLESS anyone that gets a $26 million dollar severance package. VIVA CAPITALISM DUDE! I don’t think he cares what AT&T says. HAROLD Dear Harold, Police in Oakland , CA spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself inside his home. After firing ten tear gas canisters, officers discovered that the man was standing beside them in the police line, shouting, “Please come out and give yourself up.” Signed, Steve McGarret, FIVE O Dear SMFO, I guess they roll a bit different on the West coast than we do here in the southeast coast. Most likely we would put up load speakers with a woman complaining about her lack of shoes and if that doesn’t draw him out, nothing will. HAROLD

Dear Harold, In the Dumb Criminal blotter, an Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a motorist and forced him to drive to two different automated teller machines, wherein the kidnapper proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts. Signed, Not The Sharpest Tool In The Shed Dear NTSTITS, I’m guessing he did not graduate elementary school. Not real sure he got out of kindergarten. HERE’S YOUR SIGN DUDE! HAROLD Dear Harold, More from the Stupid Crook newsreel, A man walked into a Topeka, Kansas Kwik Stop and asked for all the money in the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was too small, so he tied up the store clerk and worked the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him. Signed, I Need A Job Main Dear INAJM, Seemed like a good idea to him until the PO PO arrived? I’m not sure his elevator goes to the top floor and THERE’S HIS SIGN! HAROLD Dear Harold, Some DUDES are not rocket scientists. The police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn’t control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words: ‘Give me all your money or I’ll shoot’, the man shouted, “That’s not what I said!” and off to jail he went. Signed, Going Out Of Bounds Brings Extra Repercussions Dear GOOBBER, There must be something in the water on the west coast. That DUDE still probably does not know how he got caught. Any group of people that would continually re-elect Nancy Pelosi must be mentally unstable. HAROLD Dear Harold, A man panicking called the local hospital and spoke frantically into the phone: “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart.” “Is this her first child?” the doctor asked. “No!” the man shouted, “This is her husband!” Signed, Some People Should Not Pro-create Dear SPSNP, I’m guessin that DUDE is blonde! Boy is his wife a lucky, lucky woman. HAROLD Dear Harold, This past summer, a couple of rocket scientists were down on lake, new to boating, having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get their brand new 22 foot boat, going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power
they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition. The engine ran fine, the outdrive went up and down and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer! Signed, I Don’t Interact Outward Totally Dear IDIOT, Maybe boating is not their thing. Some people should take advantage of hiring a Professional Charter Boat Captains. Some more than others.....HERE’S YOUR SIGN! HAROLD Dear Harold, WIFE: “There is trouble with the car. It has water in the carburetor.” HUSBAND: “Water in the carburetor? That’s ridiculous “ WIFE: “I tell you the car has water in the carburetor.” HUSBAND: “You don’t even know what a carburetor is. I’ll check it out. Where’s the car?” WIFE: “In the pool!” Signed, Why Don’t Men Listen To Women?
Dear YIKES, You know that is one happy DUDE! I wonder if she knows how to cook? HAROLD Dear Harold, *Today’s Short Reading from the Bible...* From Genesis: “And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth.” Signed, The Pope Dear Pope, Then he made the earth round! Hope you enjoyed your visit to the United States of America. GOD BLESS! HAROLD Dear Harold, Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The Ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent. Signed, You Got My Signal? Dear YGMS? Very funny DUDE. Hey, A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything!” LOL HAROLD
Dear WDMLTW? What did you say? HAROLD Dear Harold, I just heard one of the most frightening statistic I’ve probably heard in years. 25% of the women in this country are on medication for mental instability. I didn’t realize this was such a problem. Signed, She Be Cray Cray
Dear Harold, A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Ahmal.” The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him “Juan.” Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They’re twins! If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.” Signed, Bodda Bing
Dear SBCC, I know it’s close to Halloween so beware, as there are some real witches out there. That statistic is really scary. That means 75% are running around untreated. Arggghhh! Run for your lives DUDES! HAROLD
Dear BB, Dear you hear about the dyslexic man that walked into a bra? HAROLD
Dear Harold, A young man wanted to get his beautiful blonde wife something nice for their first wedding anniversary, so he decided to buy her a cell phone. He showed her the phone and explained to her all of its features. She was excited to receive the gift and simply adored her new phone. The next day she went shopping. Her phone rang and to her astonishment, it was her husband on the other end. “Hi Honey,” he said, “How do you like your new phone?” She replied, “I just love it! It’s so small and your voice is clear as a bell, but there’s one thing I don’t understand though...” “What’s that, sweetie?” asked her husband. “How did you know I was at Wal-Mart?” Signed, Your Intellect Keeps Earning Status!

HAROLD Dear Harold, Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: “Does this taste funny to you?” Signed, Silly Rabbit, Trix Are For Kids Dear SRTAFK, That reminds me, I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn’t find any.

SHIPPER The photo of the Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) was taken this year in Beaufort’s Mossy Oaks neighborhood. There has been at least one family of these hawks that has nested in the neighborhood for several years. It is not uncommon to see these birds perched on power lines or sign posts in the spring, scanning the ground for prey either for themselves or to feed their young. The hawk in the photo is very likely a juvenile that was not quite ready to hunt on its own. It was frequently spotted in a neighborhood backyard over a couple week period. It was quite calm and had little concern with human onlookers. On the day the photo was taken, it was perched on a large branch of a Live Oak and calmly sat and watched as I set up my tripod and began taking pictures. Moments later the bird in the photo began calling and suddenly, out of nowhere, a larger Red-shouldered Hawk, presumably momma hawk or daddy hawk, flew in and delivered a Glass Lizard as an afternoon snack to my photo subject. The photo was taken with a Canon 7D Mark II and a Canon 500mm f/4 L series lens.
