Spring  2014
oooray for the Vernal Equinox! DUDE this past Winter could not get over fast enough for me. Sleet, freezing rain, temperatures in the 20’s, dripping pipes.. YUCK! Well, this is the time of year many of us locals love for obvious reasons. We get to get outdoors, enjoy all that Mother Nature has in store for us in the Springtime and it doesn’t get dark at 1800 hours. Now there’s more daylight to fish, work on the yard or that golf game or to go for a Lowcountry nature walk or boat ride. Yeah, Springtime is for DUDES, so get your horses saddled up and watered down cause its time to get outdoors and hit the trail for a nice ride. Hyah, Gitty Up! This Spring issue of DUDE we would like to induct 4 DUDES from Liverpool in the DUDE HALL of FAME and that’s none other than the FAB FOUR, THE BEATLES! This past Winter was the 50th anniversary of THE BEATLES performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Now that does make me feel old! THE BEATLES; John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr formed the English rock band back in 1960. Arguably they are the greatest and most influential act of the rock era. These FAB DUDES released 12 studio albums, 13 EP’s and 22 singles in the United Kingdom, however once they signed with Capitol Records in the United States they went viral. THE BEATLES were the KINGS of VINYL and of course now they have evolved through 8-tracks, cassettes, CD’s, MP3’s and now, pretty much everything is a digital download. John, Paul, George and Ringo stole the all the women’s hearts as they cranked out an amazing 217 songs in the 60’s. DUDE that’s roughly 10 hours of music. Their first two albums; Abbey Road and Let It Be, really issued in the Stereo Era from Mono recordings. Gold and Platinum are pretty much the medals the FAB FOUR dealt in, even when they came out with their “White Album” on the Apple label. Yeah, my brothers and I had Beatles wigs, guitars, drums and we were rockin to a HARD DAYS NIGHT DUDE! Those that have grown up with THE BEATLES all have memories that go with all their iconic songs that I still love today; Please Please Me, Twist and Shout, All My Loving, HELP, Yesterday, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Yellow Submarine, Let It Be, Nowhere Man and The Magical Mystery Tour. All great tunes DUDE! THE BEATLES will live in infamy with these amazing stats; 27 Studio albums, 4 Live albums, 57 Compilation albums, 21 EPs, 55 Singles, 10 Video albums and an amazing 37 Music videos. Pretty amazing even by today’s standards. Though Money Can’t Buy Me Love Eight Days A Week, I need a Ticket To Ride to find Penny Lane, Lady Madonna, Michelle My Bell and Eleanor Rigby to tell them I’m not a Loser or a Nowhere Man, All I Need is Their Love so I can be a Day Tripper and a Paperback Writer! ROCK ON DUDES! We are proud to induct THE FAB FOUR to DUDE HALL of FAME this Spring 2014.....LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.......THE BEATLES! It’s going to be a fun ride this Spring with the warmer temperatures and our horses feeling all frisky. As we dust up the trail leaving the north forty, we always look forward to hearing from our NATURE DUDE, Marvin Bouknight, Naturalist at Oldfield. I guess by now, many of you faithful followers of DUDE know that brotha Marvin and I love birds, especially the BIRDS OF PREY. We had a Falcon on the cover a couple issues ago, from our good friend, Wes Grady and it brought up the subject one day when I was talking to Marvin. Do we have Falcons in the Lowcountry? Seems we actually do, as Marvin spotted one not to long ago. Great article and photos Marvin. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the fastest bird of prey in the sky. Can you imagine getting dive bombed by a Falcon doing 150 mph? OUCH DUDE! Warmer temperatures increase the water temperatures and that means the fish are coming out of their Winter comas and start to think about doing a little bit of mating. Spring Fever is not just for

DUDES. Fish like to Get R Done too and April and May mean the big influx of Cobia in to the Broad River and St. Helena Sounds. The delectable brown bruisers have arguably been over fished the past decade and our friend, Al Stokes and his fine group at the Waddell Mariculture Center have certainly done their part with an aggressive restocking program. The bad news is that roughly 50% of the fish being caught now are from Waddell releases. Limits of 2 per man, per day have done

some damage to the stock, so DUDE, keep a few smaller ones to eat and let the big mama breeders go, so they can do there thing. We are their worst enemy without a doubt. While we are on the subject of Cobia, we have a new fishing DUDE to introduce you to, Captain Tuck Scott who fishes out of the Bay Street Outfitters stable. We got to meet Capt. Tuck during last Fall’s ORVIS FLY FISHING SCHOOL at Oldfield, as he was one of the very skilled instructors. Check out their ad as more are scheduled for this Spring. This DUDE knows FLY FISHING! He shares a great story of teaching a DUDE what fly “sight casting” fishing for Cobia is all about. The rush of a big brownie swallowing your fly and taking off is hard to beat. Welcome aboard Captain Tuck. DUDES love to fish, but it really slows down here in the Lowcountry Winter months. Sure we have some good catches of schools of reds on the flats and the Big Bulls coming inshore to breed, but that’s about it. What’s a DUDE to do? ROADTRIP! We got a posse together and rode our horses down to a truly magnificent place we heard about from Captain Jason Dubose, THE SAILFISH MARINA RESORT in West Palm Beach, Florida. This is a fisherman’s mecca. We simply can not thank Michele Sedge and her fine group that runs this fisherman’s paradise. The DUDE Posse met up with Captian Jason Dubose and first mate, Zack Lynam on The Lucky Hooker as they picked us up at Sailfish Marina and off we went to the blue water. Doesn’t take long to be in over 150 feet of water with the high rises still in sight. Thought the elusive Atlantic Sailfish evaded me once again, we did manage to have a great time and catch some nice King Mackerel. Yeah we came back wounded and sun burned, but we knew, WE’LL BE BACK! While we’re out riding near the water, we were invited by the Port Royal Sound Foundation to come to their new soon to be open Maritime Center, located at the foot of the Lemon Island bridge and enjoy a presentation by PRSF board members, David Harter and Chris Marsh of what’s on tap. Hanging out with both Hilton Head and Beaufort fishing club members, as well as many of our friends from South Carolina Department of Natural Resources made for a fun evening. DUDES you are going to love this place and it is going to be a nice asset for Beaufort County. Make sure you check out the article and come join us for their first annual golf tournament at Callawassie Island to help them raise some funds. Contact Executive Director, Judy Almand and get your team registered. A 3,000 gallon aquarium with redfish and cobia in it should be a real cool sight to see DUDE. When out on the range enjoying our ride with our favorite horses, we always have our dogs tagging along. They love the ride as much as we do, especially when the horses are full of energy and ready to gallop. I guess from our last issue it’s pretty obvious that DUDES LOVE DOGS, with us getting to meet the LEGEND, Parris Island’s Mascot. Hey, they are man’s best friend! Need I say more. Last issue my friend, Dr. Reggie Sigmon started his series of articles about training a Bird Dog. Not quite as easy as you may think, but if it’s done right, you’ll have a dedicated fellow fowl hunter and a friend of the family for sure. Part II, has the good doctor and his dog, Lucy in the field, getting adjusted to the sound of shotguns and getting use to the idea of a bird in its mouth without eating it. Shouldn’t be long now before she’s pointing out some Bob White Quail up there in Western North Carolina, where we are from, She’s a GOOD GIRL! DOGS are amazing animals. My introduction to Therapy Dogs was at the SCI Wheelchair Wounded Warriors Hunt, DIZ and I attend every year up at Nemours Wildlife Foundation in northern Beaufort County. Watching these beautiful animals interact with these Wounded Warriors simply brought tears to your eyes. The dogs could tell there was something special about these True American Heroes that have sacrificed so much for our Freedom. I got to meet Rebecca Bass of Therapy Dogs Inc and later this past Winter, I sat down with her for a few brews to learn more about this

great organization. Not only do these great dogs visit our Wounded Warriors, seems they pay regular visits to our impressionable young children in school and to various senior citizen communities. The Smiles you see that these dogs put on these people’s faces is Priceless DUDE! Last but not least, on the dog gone front side of our ride, is none other than the fine folks at Palmetto Animal Clinic in Okatie. What a fantastic facility this place has become over its first few years. Need a dog or a cat, then stop by there first and see what they have to offer. I’ve seen some of the cutest kittens, cats, puppies and dogs there, all wanting a nice place to call home. PAL as it is commonly called is now offering an affordable clinic, so make sure you check out our friend, Terry Bergeron’s article about this altruistic place run by a great group of volunteers. As we turn our horses back towards the ranch, we can’t help but think how fortunate we are to be able to live life here in the Lowcountry. Sometimes we have to simply Thank GOD and pinch ourselves about how lucky we are, but not everyone is as blessed as us here in Beaufort County. I decided to spend some time with two great local organizations that help out our fellow man here in the Lowcountry; HELP of Beaufort and HEALING HEROES. Make sure you check out each of my articles on these two great groups of volunteers that go the extra mile to help those that are truly in need. I tagged along with a great DUDE on one of HELP’s Mobile Meals runs and to say I was humbled would be an understatement. DUDE there are lots of people out there that can not even provide or prepare a hot meal for themselves on a daily basis. Great work HELP’s Beth Moon in conjunction with Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Those volunteers deserve to have their halos polished. Nice Job! Donnie Beer, Dick Rooney and the fine group that is the Healing Heroes Lowcountry Fund are doing some great work in the short period of time they have been helping out our American Heroes in need and not only do they include our returning soldiers, some wounded, but they also help out the great first responders and their families during times of trouble. Law Enforcement Officers, Firefighters and Emergency Responders can all get hurt or worse in the line of duty keeping us safe and this fine group does all they can to assist these admirable individuals and their families when unfortunate accidents happen while performing their GOD blessed work. We got to meet many of our areas top Military Leaders at a local fund raiser oyster roast/fish fry. Thanks for including DUDE. We will do all we can to help out this worth while cause. Look for their HEALING HEROES Ammo Boxes in local establishments and throw your spare dollars in there to help out those that are there when you need them. Yeah, they’re HEROES and we need to HELP them HEAL! We are lucky to have people like this in our little sea island community DUDE! As usual, when we get our horses back on the ranch, washed down, fed, watered, brushed up and tucked away in their stables, we kick up our heels by the fire and have a few cold ones and a nice DUDE cigar. Some times we get silly and it’s usually that wild and crazy Largemouth Bass, Editor of ours, HAROLD that makes us laugh with his Mailbag of letters. Hard to believe a fish can be that funny. Thanks to all you DUDES who sent Harold your photos this past winter. There were some nice fish caught and turkeys bagged, Good eatin! Ole Harold managed to get out and about this winter to some fun events that you’ll find in our DUDES IN FOCUS photo section. He was seen at the Port Royal Sound Foundation’s presentation, Healing Heroes’ Lowcountry Fund Oyster Roast/Fish Fry, Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival and he managed to swim in to Katie O’Donald’s and Rosie O’Grady’s for all their St. Patty’s Day fun times. Make sure you check out our DUDE That’s Entertainment schedule as we do have some good shows coming to our area this Spring. Tony Bennett, Reo Speedwagon, Cher, Dave Matthew Band and Bruno Mars are all going to be in the hood. Well DUDES, our Spring ride has come to an end, so please be careful out there and make sure you have some fun & laugh. Most importantly, make sure you are good stewards of our precious natural resources and do the right thing and help out your fellow man in need by donating funds or volunteering. They’ll appreciate it and you’ll feel better about yourself, I promise. BRAD B. MCDONALD PUBLISHER DUDE DUDESC.COM 843-298-3827 A Special DUDE THANK YOU to all our faithful followers and advertisers. Fast Flying Falcons in the Lowcountry

Article and Photos BY MARVIN BOUKNIGHT
ooner or later, I’m gonna have an accident, I just know it! I was crossing the spot to devour their hard-earned meal. Broad River bridge a while ago and saw a bird out of the corner of my eye fly Peregrine falcons were virtually eliminated, or extirpated (meaning completely repast and land on a structure near the river’s edge. Instantly, I knew it wasn’t moved), from the central and eastern United States. The culprit was the same culprit a gull, tern, osprey or eagle, and had a sneaky suspicion what it was. I didn’t that devastated the pelican, osprey, eagle, etc. populations…DDT. In the 60 s, sciget a very good look at it, but earlier in the year, my wife Gabrielle and I were entists discovered that DDT was affecting the thickness of the eggshells of falcons on our way to Savannah and we saw a similar shaped bird land in about the and other birds. When adults sat on the eggs to incubate them, the thin eggshells same spot. Sure enough, as I got closer, I pulled over on the shoulder of the bridge, were crushed and as a result, in 1965, not a single peregrine falcon was fledged (the whipped out my binocufew that actually hatched lars and there he was…a didn’t survive). COME ON, Let me see you shake your tail feathers! were also called “lady hawks”, because noble women in the medieval times (great restaurant) used to hunt with merlins. One of the most famous of these gals is Catherine the Great, who owned a merlin. There is even conjecture that the merlin (which is British for “eagle”), inspired the name of King Arthur’s great magician and not the other way around! The last falcon is a small bird that my granddaddy called a tilley hawk, but due to its size and propensity to take small birds, it was also called a sparrow hawk. The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is smallest falcon in the U.S. but it packs a powerful punch in a little body. They feed mostly on insects, but will also take small songbirds, sparrows, etc., which they catch usually in the air and take it to the ground. Speaking of fierce, they have even been known to catch snakes and birds as big as robins, and have even been seen taking a gray squirrel! Wow! The kestrel is also one of the few birds of prey that is sexually dimorphic, which is a fancy way of saying the female looks different than the male. Kestrels are beautifully colored birds, with a spotted chest, reddish back, and (like the peregrine), a distinct mustache or malar. The females have red wings to match their backs, but the males have bluish wings to contrast against the reddish back, making it pretty easy to tell the difference. Kestrels, unlike the other falcons, can be seen all year long in the Lowcountry, mostly being seen perched on power lines and fences, where they search for their prey. They are the smallest falcon in the U.S. and in my opinion, one of the most handsome birds you will see! Falcons have always captured our imagination and even the name “falcon” conjurs up images of fast flying, fierce birds with attitude and swagger. Think of all the mascots and professional sport teams that falcons have inspired and yes, even jet engines were designed after studying the airflow through the nostrils of a peregrine falcon. Make sure you keep your eyes open if you go to places like Savannah NWR, Donnelley WMA, Bear Island WMA or other coastal refuges. Check the power lines for kestrels, look for flushing sparrows and songbirds for a clue to the presence of a merlin, and if you see seagulls, shorebirds, and terns all get up in the air, it could be the work of a peregrine falcon swooping in for lunch! DUDE PROFILE: Marvin Bouknight is a South Carolina native and has lived in the Lowcountry for over 15 years. A Clemson University graduate with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Marvin has been a professional naturalist for over 20 years and is currently the staff naturalist at Oldfield Club. Mousse is very attentive to a young reader in the ARF! Program (Animals make Reading Fun!) which could be argued by some women in my past), I felt an immediate sense of peace and tranquility when interacting with this gorgeous dog. I now understand how this helps people cope, adapt and even learn through this remarkable, beneficial synergy with these dogs. Certainly one can imagine how these prodigious dogs make a Wounded Warrior feel. Truly a touching experience to witness, but as I found out, Rebecca and the other marvelous volunteers of Therapy Dogs Inc. work with many local groups. They are periodic and frequent visitors to many local assisted living facilities that house many of the Lowcountry’s senior citizens. Helena House, Summit Place and River Oaks are a few of the very fortunate facilities that receive visits from this altruistic group of volunteers and their dogs. They also pay visits to the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro where the dogs can interact and show compassion to many of our American Heroes. Therapy Dogs are not just for older citizens, Veterans and Wounded Warriors as they are very engaging when it comes to our youngsters out there. Rebecca and company pay systematic regimented visits to Beaufort Elementary and St. Helena Elementary schools to interface with these Chloe poses w very impressionable children. The dogs are very attentive and comforting to the children, allowing them to be able to read and project themselves with minimal stress and anxiety. Certainly a confidence building exercise, especially when social interaction seems to be on the decline with the youth of today as they mindlessly bury themselves in their smart phones. The reading program that Rebecca started over four years ago was just recognized with the highest award presented to volunteers at the YMCA of Beaufort County. Well done y’all...Well Done! Rebecca emphasizes that these visits are not just good for the owner-handlers and groups of folks they are visiting, but they are good for the dogs as well. She gleefully states, “Hey, these dogs need a job too!” Indeed they do! She tells us of how the dogs come home tired and seemingly satisfied from their successful and worthwhile day’s effort. Not a bad life if you ask me, DUDE! A therapy dog needs to be obedience trained and have an easygoing temperament that enables the dog to be relaxed when meeting new people and new dogs. If you are a serious dog person, have compassion and experience working with dogs and people and most importantly, have time to volunteer to bring some happiness, smiles and joy to members of our community, then feel free to contact Rebecca at her email address: rwbass@embarqmail. com. She is a great American citizen and a very caring person, so if you have the RIGHT STUFF to become part of this great group of people, better known as THERAPY DOGS INC., contact Rebecca. You can peruse the requirements for becoming a Therapy Dogs Incorporated team on their website: www.therapydogs.com. BOW WOW FOR NOW, DUDES!

FOWL HUNTING DOG (Puppy) TRAINING (Part II) BY DR. REGGIE SIGMON
I
boredom sets in. Again, a treat is a great idea. For a gun dog, you are going to take him into the field for runs with exposure to birds and gunshots (you should be going in daily walks anyway). It’s fine to run with other dogs on occasion, but generally it should be just you and your dog. Try to keep talking, yelling, and whistling to a minimum as you and your pet form an “invisible bond.” He will learn to check back (keep an eye on you and where you are going). As your pup gets larger, put a short lead or check cord (6-12 foot stiff rope that won’t get caught on brush and briars) on his collar. The dog will soon ignore it, but it is a valuable training tool to help you control and handle your dog in the field. This is when your dog is exposed to birds (tweety birds, pigeons, quail, etc). Wild quail are the best teacher, but pigeons and released quail are what most of us use. Whatever birds you use, make sure they are strong fliers the dog can’t catch or run down after a short flight. I started Lucy (our GSP pup) at 3-4 months by holding a live pigeon in front of her and really getting her excited. I released the bird and she took off chasing it. As she chased the bird, I shot a blank pistol. This not only makes her “birdy” but conditions her to gunshots. I also shoot when she points and chases tweety birds. Now when she hears a gunshot, she gets excited and looks for where the action is located. Most of us work our dogs on released quail (again good fliers that the dog cannot catch). If you know where the bird is planted, you can lead your young dog in on the check cord for a point (or flush for some breeds). Once pointing, you can “style up” your dog gently saying, “WHOA!” then have an assistant flush the bird (remember you are kneeling
t’s spring DUDES! You and your new hunting pup have settled into a routine at home. The pup is housebroken and not too many objects are chewed up. The pup has learned “NO!” (combined with a stern tone in your voice and gentle correction—no hitting or spanking). Other important commands can be worked into your daily schedule. Only do each command a couple of times per day to avoid boredom. When the pup is running towards you say, “HERE!” (or “Come”) and praise him when he arrives. If he is dawdling, then turn (or walk away) and his natural tendency to chase will kick in. An occasional treat (I like Cheezits) as a reward is a good idea. “SIT!” is the easiest command. Hold your hand up saying sit and pressing the pup’s butt down. Once sitting, you walk away saying, “STAY!” When the pup moves, set him in the same spot and repeat the process. Don’t forget the generous praise and occasional treats. “WHOA!” is a little harder. Before going outside or to eat, stop the pup at the door or bowl saying, “Whoa.” Set him up as you gently praise him (“good whoa”). Then tap him on the head and say, “OK.” Use “OK” as your release command from “SIT” and “STAY” also. Practice these commands inside, in the yard, and in the field. Whenever you put him in his crate or kennel (for the night or a trip in the car) say, “KENNEL”. Again praise him and leave an occasional treat in the kennel. This is a perfect time to learn retrieving. Throw a ball or toy down a hallway. The pup HAS to bring it back to you. Praise him. Gently take the ball from him as you say, “GIVE”. Don’t play “tug of war” or “keep away” with him. Do this 2-3 times and stop before

beside your young dog and controlling him with a check cord). When the bird flushes, let him chase it. He will eventually learn he cannot catch it and will become “steady to wing”. Eventually, he will learn the game is that he points (or flushes for some breeds), you shoot, and he gets to retrieve. If your dog does catch a bird, don’t make a big deal of it. Go back to another bird (perhaps with your pup on a check cord for better control) to finish with a good point. Usually 3-4 birds per session is all a young pup can stand before “spasming out” and being too excited to learn. Part of field conditioning is exposure to water. A “kiddie pool” in your back yard can be very good and fun for a young pup. As you take walks in the field, cross creeks and find ponds with shallow areas, let the pup drink and play. If it’s hot, he may start swimming without even realizing it. This is a good time to take an older dog who likes to swim. To coax him into the water, you may have to wade out or swim yourself. You can also throw dead birds or retrieving dummies into the water a few feet (gradually increasing distance and depth). Let’s also talk about dog psychology and dominance. First, you are leader of the pack. Being dominant does NOT mean physically hitting or subduing the dog (this teaches him to fear you). Dominance IS the dog looking to you for direction. One way to show your alpha status is by feeding the dog (usually twice a day for pups). He soon learns food comes from you. Another way is by not letting a young pup on the furniture. You may let him sit in your lap with your permission, but he shouldn’t be on the couch or chair unattended. When he gets older, calmer and understands the pecking order, you may let him on the furniture. When a pup tests his boundaries (such as jumping on people), tell him “NO” and correct the behavior. Give a toy or chew as a distraction (remember he is full of energy, just like a 2 year old child that can’t sit still). If he needs correction outside (such as for digging) use a squirt bottle or throw a rolled up towel at him. If they continue to ignore you, pick them up (a clear sign of dominance) and put them in “time out’ (crate, kennel, backyard) for a short period of time. Dogs are social animals and being removed from the pack (your family) is significant punishment. Whether in the house, yard, or field if you are usually going towards the pup then the pup is being dominant. If the pup is typically coming towards you, you are dominant. When on a lead in the field the pup’s natural tendency is to run around and ignore your commands (exert their dominance). Your job is to gently, firmly make him do the command (here, heel, fetch, whoa, etc). Sometime in this process, he should make eye contact with you. By making eye contact, he is submitting to you (listening to you and looking to you for leadership). While teaching “Heel” and “Whoa” to Lucy, I have had to stand there 1-2 minutes until she quit looking at the surroundings and looked up at me (submitted). Then I released her and let her run around. Finally, I think electronic training collars are great tools. We waited until Lucy was 6 months old before getting an electronic containment system for the yard. We also got an electronic collar for reinforcing commands in the yard and eventually the field. This was only after she knew what the commands meant. Start LOW and go SLOW. You still should do the basic yard work with your dog before using an electronic collar. ENJOY your pup’s first year (though there are always times of exasperation). There is nothing like hunting in the field with your dog that you helped train DUDE.

P
almetto Animal League has opened the PAL Community Clinic in their Adoption Center at the Riverwalk Business Park. Located on Highway 170 near Okatie, Bluffton, Hardeeville and Ridgeland, the clinic is intended to answer a clear community need. “Offering quality affordable health care was identified early on as a way we could assist pet owners,” said PAL president Amy Campanini. “Having a wellness and spay/neuter clinic available to the public would help us decrease the number of owner surrenders and help keep pets and their humans together.” Situated within the state-of-the-art PAL Adoption Center, the clinic has already proven to lower operating costs there by serving the animals in the PAL rescue and adoption programs. Now open to the public by appointment on Mondays and Thursdays, the clinic provides spay/neuter services, wellness exams, vaccinations and basic veterinary services like heart-worm tests. The PAL Community Clinic offers spay/neuter services for $60 to $70. In addition, annual dog and cat wellness exams are $50 to $70, with $50 Healthy Start exams for puppies and kittens. Additional services such as heart-worm tests and treatment, as well as minor wound care, are also available. “While there are fine options for veterinary care available in the area, our research showed a need to offer them more affordably,” Campanini said. Services are available by appointment, which can be made by calling the PAL Community Clinic at 843-645-1727. For more information on PAL and its services, visit PalmettoAnimalLeague.org.

Dear HAROLD, Two Lowcountry rednecks are out hunting and as they are walking along they came upon a huge hole in the ground. They approach it and are amazed at the size of it. The first hunter says, “Wow, that’s some hole; I can’t even see the bottom. I wonder how deep it is?” The second hunter says,” I don’t know. Let’s throw somethin’ down there, listen and see how long it takes to hit bottom.” The first hunter says, “Hey, there’s an old automobile transmission over there. Give me a hand, we’ll throw it in and see.” So they pick it up and carry it over and count one, two, three and heave it in the hole. They are standing there listening, looking over the edge, when they hear a rustling behind them. As they turn around, they see a goat come crashing through the underbrush, run up to the hole and without hesitation, jump in headfirst. While they are standing there staring at each other in amazement, peering into the hole, trying to figure out what that was all about, an old farmer saunters up. “Say there,” says the farmer, “You fellers didn’t happen to see my goat around here anywhere, did you?” The first hunter says, “Funny you should ask, but we were just standing here a minute ago and a goat came running out of the bushes doin’ bout a hunnert miles an hour and jumped . . .headfirst into this here hole!!!!” The old farmer said, “Naw, that’s impossible . . .I had him chained to a transmission.” Signed, DUDE Here’s Your Sign Dear DHYS, Ha! to check speeding vehicles approaching the town of Beaufort near the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort . The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300 miles per hour and climbing. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it would not reset and then it suddenly turned off. Just then, a deafening roar over the Palmetto tree tops on Hwy 21 revealed that the radar had in fact, locked on to a USMC F/A-18 Super Hornet which was engaged in a low flying exercise. Back at the South Carolina Highway Patrol Headquarters in Columbia the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the US Naval Base Commander at MCAS Beaufort for shutting down his equipment. The reply came back in true USMC style: Dear Captain, Thank you for your letter.... You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the F/A 18 Hornet had detected the presence of and subsequently locked on to your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it, which is why it shut down. Furthermore, an Air-to-Ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also
automatically locked on to your equipment’s location. Fortunately, the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched to destroy the hostile radar position on the side of Hwy 21, north of Beaufort. The pilot suggests you cover your mouths when swearing at them, since the video systems on these jets are very high tech.
