Summer 2014

ome like it HOT DUDE and the Lowcountry Summer Solstice usually delivers. Time for a HOT SUMMER RIDE, so mount up and let’s get cracking, we’re burning daylight. Please make sure your horses are properly hydrated cause it gets dry out there on the trail. I personally am more of a Fall and Spring DUDE, however Summertime has many fun times for all of us to enjoy, most particularly the 59th Annual Beaufort Water Festival. This is when Summer really kicks in for us DUDE. Multiple nights and days hanging out in good ole downtown Beaufort, enjoying all the LIVE ENTERTAINMENT, as well as the local entertainment held at Q’s on Bay and at Luther’s. Yeah, we’ll be drinking cold beer down at Waterfront park for a solid two weeks. Great friendly locals and visitors all getting together for a BIG OUTDOOR PARTY that lasts over a week. See y’all there DUDES and make sure you check out their ad for the nightly entertainment line up. Country Boy, CRAIG MORGAN IN THE HOUSE! Yee Haw Y’all! Thanks to all those who sent in nominations to the DUDE HALL of FAME this past Spring. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing several of them in the future, however I’ve had this one in the back of my head since I started DUDE over 4 years ago and when the 70th anniversary of D-Day rolled around this past June 6th, I simply had to pull the trigger and dedicate this issue and induct 5 Star General and our 34th President of The United States of America, Dwight David Eisenhower to the DUDE HALL of FAME. I LIKE “IKE” and everyone else that lives in the free world should like IKE too or we’d all be speaking German right now. Dwight David Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas to the parents Elizabeth and David. He was the third of seven boys. The family moved to Abilene, Kansas which is where IKE considered his home. IKE was a DUDE growing up exploring the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, cooking and playing cards. Yeah, those are DUDE credentials alright! The 5 Star General originally tried to go to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, however once he won an entrance-exam competition to get in he was too old and opted and was accepted to West Point in 1911. IKE excelled in English and in engineering and mathematics all of which would prove to be very useful in the coming years. Though he could not make the baseball team, one of the worst disappointments of his life, he did managed to make the football team. He was a running back and a linebacker which certainly makes sense. IKE met and fell in love with Mamie who was 6 years younger when he was stationed in Texas and he proposed to her on Valentine’s Day. They had two sons and one died at 3 of scarlet fever and the other John, ended up becoming a Brigadier General in the United States Army. Ironically enough, John graduated from West Point on June 6th, 1944 (D-Day) President Eisenhower worked his way up the ladder in the Army with stents in the Philippines and in various camps in Texas and Georgia. IKE was head of training at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia. From Ft. Leavenworth to Camp Meade IKE soon found himself as a Lieutenant Colonel in the new tank corps fighting in World War I. After WWI he reverted back to his regular rank of Captain and a few days later got promoted to Major and he held this rank for 16 years. IKE was a master at commanding battalions of tanks which would prove to very valuable in the years to come working with Ole Blood and Guts, General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. He spent some time with General MacArthur in the Philippines and this provided valuable preparations for him handling the powerhouse personalities of; Winston Churchill, George Patton, George Marshall and General Montgomery in World War II. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower was assigned to the General Staff in Washington where he was given the responsibility for creating the major war plans to defeat Japan and Germany. IKE became the Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces in North Africa. Here he conducted Operations Torch and Avalanche which helped him hone his combat commanding Summer 2014

skills for his main mission in life, including being president, as the Supreme Allied Commander in charge of Operation Overlord, where he followed the orders of FDR to plan the Allied assault on the coast of Normandy. The liberation of Western Europe and the invasion of Germany soon commenced. An unbelievable achievement of mankind in total vision and scope. The liberation of France and victory in Europe was sweet indeed but it costs the lives of roughly 60 million people.

After the success of World War II and Hitler putting a pistol to his head, IKE replaced General Marshall as Chief of Staff of the Army. IKE ended up opposing President Truman and his use of the Atomic Bomb as he thought surrender was inevitable anyway. IKE served as president of Columbia University and in 1952 was convinced to run for president. The campaign forever know as, “I LIKE IKE” was kicked off. His Vice-President on the ticket was none other than Tricky Dick Nixon. IKE defeated Adlai Stevenson in a landslide. President Eisenhower served two terms from 1953 to 1961. He continued FDR’s NEW DEAL and expanded Social Security and rolled it in to a cabinet level agency of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. One of Eisenhower’s enduring achievements was the championing of signing of the bill that authorized the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System in 1956. He rushed construction of more advanced satellites and created NASA. IKE is credited for coming up with the three major nuclear deterrences of the Cold War; B-52 bombers and land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and Polaris submarine-launched ballistic missiles. IKE’s 3 pack a cigarettes a day caught up with him and he had a serious heart attack and developed a left ventricular aneurysm. Along with battling Crohn’s disease, IKE died on March 28, 1968 at the age of 78 due to congestive heart failure. General and President Eisenhower also gets credit for getting us out of the Korean War. Yeah, IKE was one BAD ASS DUDE and I missed a lot of his life’s story in this brief reflection of this great man’s life. So, we SALUTE FIVE STAR GENERAL & PRESIDENT DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER, thank him for his service to our great country and proudly welcome IKE to the DUDE HALL of FAME. I LIKE IKE DUDE! A yellow lightning bug, from out of mid-air took a break and sat down with me on my rockin chair. I looked down at her, she looked up at me and we both agreed to let each other rest in peace. The cool “sorta” lyrics from Craig Morgan seem to apply this Summer ride. Ah yes! Summertime DUDE! Everyone remembers growing up and catching Lightning Bugs during those hot summer nights, putting them in jars and watching the magical flashes. Well, our Naturalist DUDE, Marvin Bouknight checks in this issue with a great article of these miracles of Mother Nature, The LIghtning Bug. Thanks for the great article and the awesome cover photo of the Grey Tree Frog. Ya think that frogs eats some of those lightning bugs flying around at night? Yum, yum, eat em up! DUDE is happy to welcome back Captain Jason Dubose to our editorial group. Jason has been a good friend to DUDE and has written us many great fishing articles throughout the years. Well, not only is he back sharing his words of wisdom, he’s back at being RiverPro in Oldfield. Many of my fellow residents missed jumping on board with Jason for a day of fishing from the Oldfield docks. The Silver King, the TARPON is the focus this Summer. Nothing and I mean nothing fights like a Tarpon. Yeah, this is big boy fishing and you better have more than a zebco if you’re going to get one to the boat. Of course, big redfish are on the prowl as well this summer so do yourself a favor and call up a local charter boat captain here in Beaufort County and get hooked up. I’d have to say we definitely have some awesome charter boat captains available on Hilton Head Island as well as in Beaufort. I can hear that line a singing now DUDE! Since we’re talking fish, we are so fortunate to have one of the most pristine estuaries anywhere on the east coast. WHY! Cause there are a lot of locals that care about our natural resources here in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Much of the credit to the success and health of our amazing ecosystem is because of Al Stokes and his fine group at the Waddell Mariculture Center. They recently got an additional million bucks to get the place upgraded to code and soon this magnificent place will be a well polished gem. A fabulous facility like this must be preserved, so check out my article on this wonderful worthy asset. Great job Al! Y’all keep up the great work. We DUDES are behind y’all 100%! We need to be mindful of our great natural resources we’ve been blessed with here in Beaufort County and it’s nice to see places like OLDFIELD with it’s reputation as an official Audubon Society, is doing it’s part by implementing the proper care for horse waste. There are indeed many private communities that cater to equestrian DUDES and that means two things; horses and horse poo. Local stables need to be a bit more mindful of what they do with all the horse crap. Oldfield recently unveiled it very well thought out, state of the art, composting facility located at the Oldfield Equestrian Stables. WOW! Recycling at it finest DUDE. Now this is the model all local stables should start to follow. Horse poo mixed with storm water run off is not what we need in our pristine waterways. And the

4

plants love it! Special thanks, Ginnie Kozak and Shelby Berry. Well done, well done! And it doesn’t even smell DUDE! One of the great little areas in our wonderful sea island county is Bluffton, South Carolina. Lots of great history and Lowcountry lore for sure. Well, CELEBRATE BLUFFTON is a new group that has come together to show case everything that Bluffton had to offer. Please read Carolyn Cappola’s article about the great interactive tour that is now going to be available for locals and visitors alike to enjoy a day in the Lowcountry and get a great historical, on-site history lesson to boot. A very cool way to spend some time with some youngsters outdoors and get them away from those mindless sociological destroying video games. BLUFFTON, yeah IT’S A STATE OF MIND DUDE! If you’ve followed DUDE’s evolution over our first 4 years, you know how much WE LOVE OUR MILITARY, especially our MARINES, Oooh Rah and Semper Fi DUDES! and our WOUNDED WARRIORS. To say Beaufort, South Carolina has a military background would be an understatement. One thing we can not take for granted is our fine Americans that are our military personnel...Alive, Wounded or Dead. Where would the United States of America be without them? Well, we wouldn’t even BE! It made me crenge when I heard the horror stories about how our Veterans have been treated via the Veterans Administration over the past years. Really DUDE! Making false promises to these fine Americans and sweeping them under the carpet is pathetic. To think some waited 18 months before they were laid to rest is almost hard to believe. To serve with honor, deserves to be treated with honor once your time has come to be with GOD and ALL THESE FINE AMERICANS DESERVE TO BE RESPECTED AND LAID TO REST IN PEACE. Our good friend, Bob Freeman checks in with us this issue as he is involved in a group that is seeking to get some additional acreage for the beautiful and peaceful Beaufort Memorial Cemetery. Certainly a place to respect but it’s getting full and more land is needed. There’s an opportunity to gain some juxtaposed land there so join these DUDES and help them help those who have served our great country so well. More room to lay our deserving heroes to rest vs another commercial plaza or condominium complex? Hopefully they will prevail. Great cause and good luck with the great effort! I’ve always said your number one asset is you own ass so to speak. DUDES, you should never take your health for granted and as we grow older, hopefully we don’t become more stubborn and put off health issues until, well it’s simply too late and the next thing you know, your life has been cut way too short due to your own negligence. The good thing is that modern technology has come a long way in the past few decades and science has become our friend, but you have to take advantage of it first of all. Dr. Michael Staley checks in this issue with a DUDE HEALTH issue and that’s dealing with BPH, the benign growth of the prostate. The bad news, you’re getting old DUDE, the good news is that this is not life threatening and there are sensible solutions to help deal with the awkwardness of frequent urination that troubles aging DUDES. Thanks for the advice Doc! On the lighter side of life, we’ve got a couple fun articles for you to enjoy this issue. COOKING DUDE STYLE returns as I’ve got a great fresh shrimp recipe to share with y’all. WADE BOWMAN SHRIMP! DUDE it will knock your socks right off your feet and being from the great Lowcountry of South Carolina you can get fresh and I mean FRESH SHRIMP all summer long. Not everybody has a great friend like we do that runs a shrimp boat like we do in, Bernie Graves and the Miss Pollyanna, but when Bernie Mac calls and says we’re coming in today, you want some fresh off the boat shrimp? the answer is usually YES, where do you want me to me you. Get you a group of DUDES together this summer and get to several pounds of fresh caught wild Lowcountry Shrimp and try this great recipe. My mouth is watering just thinking about those freshly fried shrimp, dipped in sweet and sour sauce. Let me know what y’all think DUDE. I thought of a new thing to add to the DUDE pages this past spring that can be simple reading, fun and educational at the same time...... And the answer is?????? WELCOME THE DUDE QUIZ! Test your DUDE knowledge. All questions will be relative to the world of DUDE and the Lowcountry. If you get all 12 questions right, give me a call and I’ll buy you a beer. Doubt very seriously anybody knows them all and if you even get half right, I’ll be shocked DUDE. You are welcome to send us what you would think will be good questions to use in the future. Of course every DUDE RIDE ends up at the stables with our crazy large mouth bass editor, HAROLD and his great PHOTOS & MAILBAG. Ole Harold was seen swimming around this past Spring and finding DUDES IN FOCUS at the Annual Kiwanis RIB BURN OFF, BACK PACK BUDDIES Charity golf tournament and oyster roast brought to you by Oldfield and Butler Chrysler Dodge Jeep, Southern Bell Car Show and other deep holes in the pond. Make sure you check out HAROLD’S THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT as I do believe I saw where DUDE HALL of FAME MEMBER, Sir Paul McCartney is going to be close this Fall 2014. LOVE THE BEATLES DUDE! I want to thank many of our faithful DUDE followers and friends this past Spring for their prayers and support as it certainly put forth some personal challenges. LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST DUDE! Help out your fellow man when you can and hopefully they will in turn help you one day DUDE. HAVE A GREAT SUMMER, BE SAFE, BE SMART, BE MINDFUL of OUR NATURAL RESOURCES, HAVE SOME FUN & LAUGH! LIGHTNING BUGS Looking for a Bright Future Article and Photos BY MARVIN BOUKNIGHT

I

can remember many things about my childhood, but one of my most favorite is literally capturing lightning in a bottle! My family and I used to go camping in the Smokies and I remember like it was yesterday, the incredible display of the luminescent insects. In the mountains, when the sun set, it got dark, I mean “can’t see your hand in front of your face” dark. As the sun set, a few flashes would start, then a few more, and then, as if by magic, the woods and meadows would be aglow, full of flashing fireflies in the trees, in the bushes, hovering above the ground and in the grass. Of course, I’d gleefully grab a jar and chase after them as they danced around, flashing in the twilight, and as a childhood rite of passage, I’d catch as many as I could, put them in the jar. Then I’d set it on the picnic table and watch the insects crawl around, “flashing their fannies” to my amazement, but I’d always open up the jar and let them go, one by one, their flashes fading in the distance. Fireflies or Lightning bugs (as us Southerners call ‘em) are neither flies or bugs, but they are actually beetles. These amazing critters are comprised of over 2,000 species world-wide, with about 140 species found

6

in North America. In South Carolina, scientists have identified at least 22 species, with 11 being most commonly seen. Probably the most common species is the eastern firefly (Photinus pyralis), which is the one most of us see near our homes. The firefly has adapted the bioluminescence as a way of attracting or signaling a mate, but remember, both sexes flash. One species, the Photinus carolinus, is a rare firefly that exhibits the amazing behavior of flashing in synchrony and is only found in a few places in the world (with one being in Elkmont, Tennessee and in the Congaree Swamp in Columbia, SC)! There are even some species of predatory fireflies that mimic other fireflies. When a male zooms in, expecting to mate, they get devoured...yeechh! Anyway, the firefly’s flash is a chemical reaction, the result of a combination of luciferin, luciferase, magnesium, ATP, and oxygen. The reaction of these chemicals causes a release of energy in the form of light and a cool flash results. Scientists have surmised that the chemical reaction is very efficient and since no heat is released, the energy released is in the form of 100% light. Compare that to an incandescent light, which only converts 15% of its energy to light, the rest given off as heat. Even fluorescent bulbs only convert 90% of

its energy to light. Isn’t nature amazing DUDE? As you may have noticed, there just doesn’t seem to be as many lightning bugs as there used to be. The disappearance is certainly alarming, causing scientists to take notice. Studies are underway to find out just what is happening to our fireflies, but as you would suspect, the same ol’ culprits are most probably to blame. Loss of habitat, pesticides, habitat fragmentation, pollution, etc. certainly play a part in the population decline. Combine that with the overabundance of security lighting in parking lots, subdivisions and shopping centers, and even if there were more fireflies, we probably wouldn’t be able to see them! Clemson University, (Go Tigers!), as I are one, are studying the population decline of fireflies and are asking you to help. If you’d like to help out and even participate in firefly counts, check out their website called “The Vanishing Firefly Project” at www. clemson.edu/public/rec/baruch/firefly_project or just type in Clemson University Firefly project. There, you can learn all about firefiles and how you can help them with their research. They even have an app to help you with the firefly count! Hopefully, we can figure out what’s going on and we’ll see the firefly flourish in greater numbers like we all remember. Why not take some time and harken back to a simpler time? Find a dark location (if you can) out in the country and wait for the sun to set. Look closely, you’ll see a faint flicker that turns into a multitude of blinking beacons, beckoning you to turn back the clock and become a child once again... Tarpon

“The Silver King of the Lowcountry”

A

BY CAPTAIN JASON DUBOSE

ngling options are plentiful in the Lowcountry during the summer months, but if I had to choose a couple of my favorite summer time pursuits; tarpon fishing and stalking tailing redfish on the high tide flats, would no doubt be at the top of my list. These two styles of fishing are about as different as can be, but both unbelievably addictive! Try either one of them once and I can promise you’ll already be planning your next trip before you reach the dock at the end of the day. For me, the draw of tarpon fishing lies in the fact that nothing about it is ever “a given”. There are few other fish in the ocean that will chal-lenge an angler’s skills quite like the mighty “Silver King”. From finding the fish, to getting the bite, to getting the fish to the boat for a successful release, you better bring you’re “AGame” to stand a fighting chance. The only guarantee in tarpon fishing is once you’ve hooked into one, you’ll be left dumbfounded by their shear strength, blistering runs and amazing aerial displays. Tarpon typically make their first appearance in our local waters during early July, as they migrate up the coast from as far south as the Florida Keys. This year, however, we were fortunate to have an early influx of tarpon during the middle of June. The presence, or absence, of large schools of menhaden (aka Pogies), one of the primary bait fish on a tarpon’s menu, is a main factor in determining whether the migrating tarpon stick around our area in large numbers throughout the summer or continue pushing north in search of forage. So far this year, all signs point toward a productive summer tarpon season for Hilton Head and Beaufort anglers.. These mighty fish will grace us with their presence through the summer months until the first cold fronts of fall (typically arriving in mid-October), drop the water temperature enough to send them south. My absolute favorite time to target tarpon occurs during those 4 to 5 weeks prior to their exodus. Those particular weeks often coincide with the fall mullet run during which, acres of mullet move into our local waters as they migrate south. The influx of mullet brings with it large schools of hungry tarpon also working their way back down the coast from as far north as the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Like sub surface bombs exploding, the sight of a school of 80 to 120 lb. tarpon blowing mullet several feet in the air as they feed is straight from the files of National Geographic. I will offer a word of caution for those thinking about doing a tarpon trip here in the Lowcountry, if you are going to get bent out of shape if you don’t catch one every time you go out, then tarpon fishing is not for you. Tarpon are a fickle fish and their elusiveness is what makes successfully catching and releasing one all that much sweeter. It’s the thrill of the hunt and the occasional hard earned successes that keep tarpon junkies like me coming back for more!

anglers refer to as “short grass flats”. These flats, as opposed to the typical soft mud bottom and tall spartina grass of most marsh areas, are characterized by a hard packed sand bottom and short, sparse marsh grass. These short grass flats are home to millions of fiddler crabs which dig their burrows in the sandy bottom. As the tide approaches, the high water mark the flats are slowly flooded with water allowing redfish the opportunity to feed on the fiddler crabs. Often times there may only be 8 or 9 inches of water covering the flat at high tide, but that does not stop the redfish from prowling the shallows in search of a meal of crunchy crustaceans. Stalking tailing redfish is truly an amazing sensory experience. The natural beauty of the flats, the briny scent of the salt marsh, the sloshing sound of reds pushing their way through inches of water to take advantage of the rising tide, and the sight of the fish’s iridescent blue tail gently breaking the surface of the water as it roots in the sand for crabs and shrimp, all make this type of fishing an unforgettable experience. In fact, the whole scene is so mesmerizing, I’ve had anglers completely forget about casting to the fish as they stand in awe watching this amazing spectacle of nature play out in front of them. For those who do wish to fish, remember to cast with finesse, stealth, and accuracy. These are key DUDE. In the shallow water of the flats, any heavy baits or lures plopped down hard near a fish is sure to send it running. Instead, small saltwater flies or soft plastic artificial lures mimicking crabs, shrimp, or small mullet, are cast in front of and beyond the fish and slowly worked back into its field of vision in hopes of eliciting a strike. This is a true sight casting game and is as much hunting as fishing. The adrenaline level when trying to close the distance between you and a tailing fish, all the while attempting to set up at the correct angle for a perfect cast is intense. Even the most experienced flats fisherman can fall prey to shaking hands and the sound of their heart pounding in their ears when they see the blue tail of a redfish rise slowly from the water several yards from them. If the cast is good and the fish eats the fly or lure the resulting scene is explosive. At the sting of the hook, the red will blow up and make a blistering run for deeper water. When a redfish is in only 9 inches of water, they have nowhere to go but away from you and I guarantee they will do it in a hurry! If you are an avid saltwater fisherman these two summertime f i s h - eries should be on your “DUDE MUST DO” experience. Don’t let another summer pass without giving them a try, But fair warning, there is a good chance you’ll be hooked for life on both of these amazingly addictive fisheries! DUDE PROFILE: Capt. Jason DuBose is a tournament and charter captain aboard Lucky Hooker, a 42’ Yellowfin sportfishing boat. Lucky Hooker is based out of Hilton Head Island in the spring, summer and fall months and south Florida during the winter months. Capt. Jason specializes in bluewater trolling and offshore bottom and wreck fishing. He can be contacted at 843-3044834 or jjdubose@aol.com.

STALKING TAILING REDFISH In stark contrast to the over the top raw power, massive size, heavy tackle that are all part of tarpon fishing, lies the stealth and finesse of my other favorite summertime fishing pursuit…stalking tailing redfish. While we are fortunate to have year-round redfishing here in the Lowcountry, it’s during the summer months when the opportunity to target reds tailing on high tide grass flats is in its prime DUDE. Laced amongst the thousands of acres of salt marsh in our region, lie a scattering of what local

CELEBRATE BLUFFTON INC. • A Nonprofit Reveals “New” History • BY CAROLYN COPPOLA

Palmetto Bluff

Garvin House

C

elebrate Bluffton, Inc. is helping people rediscover Bluffton, South Carolina. While working on an M.F.A. in Historic Preservation at Savannah College of Art and Design, Executive Director Carolyn Coppola uncovered the fact that Bluffton was actually one example of a previously undocumented antebellum cultural landscape, that is, a place defined by specific social, political, economic, and physical characteristics. Excited by this fact, Coppola attempted to better understand the Bluffton of today by comparing contemporary towns that shared those historic characteristics. She found that Bluffton was the only surviving example of this cultural landscape in what had been known as Beaufort District, and may well be the only surviving example in Lowcountry. She set out to find a way for Bluffton to tell a story of American history through its extant built environment, one that no other town can tell, and to bring this history to the public. A heritage trail was one such vehicle. With a supportive team, the idea blossomed into a new nonprofit organization, Celebrate Bluffton, Inc. The organization’s mission is to connect residents and visitors to Bluffton’s rich historical and cultural past. Celebrate Bluffton will fulfill its mission through three areas of activities. It will establish heritage tourism programs, one of which is the Bluffton Heritage Trail. It will advocate for preservation activities, projects, and it will develop education programs. A heritage trail is a network of sites, both natural and built, that encourages people to become active participants in learning about and experiencing a place. Residents and visitors alike, will interact firsthand with the landscape of Bluffton, getting a better sense of place through the context of history and heritage. The story of each site demonstrates the relationships among people, places and time periods. Individual sites are interpreted to contribute to the larger story of Bluffton from its beginnings in antebellum

times, through the Civil War and reconstruction, to present day. Technology will aid in creating a multi-layered experience. The first delivery method of the heritage trail will be through a downloadable app, available anywhere at any time. The app will transport trail visitors to other times through narration, music and sound effects, as well as visual components. A prototype version is currently in production and is expected to be available this July. A fully-functional version, available to the public, is anticipated to be ready in early fall. Initial sites, include the Garvin house, the First Zion Baptist Church and Praise House, the Squire Pope property, the Pine house, as well as others. The organization will also act as preservation advocates. With successful experience in preparing applications for tax incentives and grants, as well as writing National Register nominations for the owners of historic properties, Celebrate Bluffton hopes to demonstrate that preservation is affordable to property owners and an overall benefit to the community. The organization anticipates many benefits to the community. The Bluffton Heritage Trail will prompt people to explore all of Bluffton, not just Old Town. The locations of trail sites encourage people to move through Bluffton by foot, car, bike, golf cart, etc. Because the trail is self-paced, people will spend as much time in and around Bluffton as they need to complete the trail. As the trail grows, so will the desire for time to take it all in. People will look for places to eat, places to stay, and ways to take breaks with other forms of entertainment. The heritage trail should enhance opportunities for existing businesses and inspire new ones. The two historic properties that are open to the public should see an increase in visitation. This work will also promote stewardship of Bluffton’s cultural resources. The people of Bluffton must preserve these assets, as well as plan carefully for the future, which includes growth and development. Celebrate Bluffton will use preservation advocacy as a tool for sustainable development, main-

VETERANS CEMETERY COMMITTEE of BEAUFORT (VCCOB) Dedicated to expanding the Beaufort National Cemetery

W

BY BOB FREEMAN

e’re the Veterans Cemetery Committee of Beaufort (VCCOB), and we’re dedicated to expanding the Beaufort National Cemetery by acquiring more land for it. For the past 4 years, we’ve been working on creative ways to latch onto the last available property contiguous to the cemetery, a parcel of land that’s almost 5 acres (it’s the apartment complex adjacent to the back fence). We’d like to do it “soon,” before it becomes unavailable due to commercial development. We recently partnered w/ fundraising gurus, Community Foundation of the Low Country, specifically to raise money to buy the property. We’d also like some cooperation from the VA! Actually, technically we’re the VCCOB II, ‘cause the first committee to call itself the VCCOB operated in the mid-to-late 2000s. Back then, A MOAA guy, the late Col. Jimmie Leach, was the driving force behind the committee. In 2007, the committee honchoed a federal/state land-swap & private property donations to give BNC an additional 15 acres THAT THE CEMETERY DESPERATELY NEEDED! The cemetery was running out of burial space and was faced with having to REFUSE INTERMENTS, BEGINNING AS EARLY AS 2008! The VA really appreciated what the first Veterans’ Cemetery Committee had done, but overestimated how long that 15 acres would last; as late as May 2013, VA officials were saying that the burial needs of Beaufort area veterans were taken care of “...for the foreseeable future,” and the former VA Director said, “...extends the cemetery’s capacity to 2050 and beyond.” Well, half the 15 acres already has been used. Furthermore, our calculations, using the VA’s own Beaufort interment data, show the cemetery running out of burial space around 2030! (To their credit, the VA has revised its estimate of when the cemetery will be full; officials are now claiming 2041, or maybe 2045--still wrong, but closer to the truth.) The second Veterans Cemetery Committee of Beaufort was formed about 2010, when it became pretty clear to local veterans who keep an eye on burials in BNC that space was being used up faster than anticipated and the prospects for acquiring the coveted parcel of land seemed to improve. Five acres won’t last very long, but it’s the last adjacent lot and better than nothing. We need to go after the land NOW and we’d like the VA to work with us to acquire it, but the VA estimate of 2041 gives the VA an excuse to do nothing. It’s VA “policy” to “begin to look at” acquiring additional property 15-20 years out from turning away burials. “As you can see, we are not at that point for Beaufort National Cemetery,” said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Steve Muro in May. The VA’s expansion policy is driven by need, rather than availability of land, officials explained. The VA’s “estimate” is not realistic and neither is their 15-20 year lead time for land acquisition; WHEN CONFRONTED W/HAVING TO SHUT DOWN INTERMENTS AS SOON AS 2008, THE VA DID NOTHING UNTIL 2007 AND ONLY BECAUSE OF PROMPTING BY VETERANS! Their expansion policy that’s “...driven by need, rather than availability...” is a policy that all-but-guarantees land won’t be available when needed! Why doesn’t the VA seem to “get” that it needs to anticipate its burial requirements as far in advance as

14

possible and acquire land whenever it becomes available? In the case of the five acres adjacent to the cemetery’s back fence, if it is not purchased soon, it will almost certainly be sold to a commercial developer and NEVER BE AVAILABLE AGAIN TO THE NATIONAL CEMETERY! The Veterans Cemetery Committee of Beaufort II has offered its grassroots financial, technical, legal and political assistance to the VA in securing the property, BUT THE VA SAID IT IS COMPLETELY UNINTERESTED IN ACQUIRING THE PROPERTY (OR ANY PROPERTY) FOR BNC AND HAS OFFI CIALLY DISASSOCIATED ITSELF FROM ANY ASSISTANCE FROM THE VCCOB II! It is remarkable in and of itself that the VA has totally rebuffed help from local veteran-volunteers, but especially confounding at this time, because right now, nation-wide. THE VA IS IN THE MIDST OF THE LARGEST VETERANS CEMETERY EXPANSION SINCE THE CIVIL WAR! The VA is acquiring land in a large number of states to establish new veterans’ cemeteries or expand existing ones, but for some reason, NOT in the Lowcountry. WHY NOT IN THE LOWCOUNTRY, TOO, WHERE THERE IS A VETERANS’ GRASSROOTS EFFORT TO SECURE THE LAST NEXT-DOOR LOT AND DEFRAY COSTS?! For more information on this very worth while effort contact; Art Foster, retired USMC, is the committee chairman. He’s been a tireless veterans’ advocate for the 7 years. I’ve known him. His institutional knowledge is like the Treasure of Sierra Madre. Following in the footsteps of Col. Jimmie Leach, he’s also been fighting for this last adjacent piece of property tooth & nail for years. He’s brought lots of allies to the field of battle who want to help, like Mayor Billy, Donnie Beer (both members of the committee), Joe Wilson, Tim Scott & Lindsey Graham. foster71@embarqmail.com Home (843) 838-9298 Tom Latendresse Tom’s another “doer,” like Art, only maybe even more compulsive. He’s done a yeoman’s job in getting our committee off on the right foot to raise money, w/media releases, talking points, an “elevator speech,” etc. Even better, he’s persuaded folks to actually open their wallets!. tomlat@embarqmail.com Home (843) 987-8298/Cell (843) 812-2202 DUDE PROFILE: Bob Freeman is a retired US Army officer. He and his wife, Linda, have lived in the Lowcountry for the past seven years. Born a Yankee, raised in the west and northeast, Infantry training at Ft. Benning took him to the south for the first time. But it wasn’t the last over a varied career with a dozen years overseas. Coastal Carolina had been the couple’s retirement target for decades. Their son Mike, a Clemson grad and attorney, followed them and lives with his family in Beaufort. Bob is active as a grandfather and in the Lowcountry veterans’ community. He just returned from a reunion of Vietnam combat veterans.

hese are questions that are common as men age. The symptoms often start in the forties and become more common as men get older. They also may get worse. It would be an oversimplification to say it is always BPH, or “benign growth of the prostate,” but that is the culprit in most men. It’s all plumbing, so think of a blocked pipe. As the prostate grows, which naturally occurs as we get older, it compresses the tube leading out of the bladder. It’s not always that simple, but that describes it pretty well. As a result, men may notice that it takes longer for their stream to start or they may even have to strain to get started. They may notice their stream is slower or that it stops and starts. Also, men may have the sudden urge to urinate or may have to go more frequently. They may have to get up at night to urinate, when in the past, they slept through the night. First, relax. It’s not a life threatening problem. It may get worse but it’s not precancerous or associated with cancer. Second, there is treatment if it bothers you enough. Therapy usually consists of medicine to shrink the prostate or medicine to relax it. Both types are relatively inexpensive and have few side effects. For men that cannot tolerate medicine or whose problem is too severe, there are surgical options. Some of them are done as an outpatient. While there are some herbal remedies available, the data on whether they work is mixed. My best advice is try it if it’s cost effective and see if it works for you. Remember that BPH is a common part of getting older. It’s not serious except for the symptoms and there is help if you want it. DUDE PROFILE: Board-certified urologist Dr. Michael Staley is a member of Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s medical staff and a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is trained in minimally invasive surgery techniques, as well as, the only current physician performing robot-assisted laparoscopic prostate surgery in Beaufort County. Dr. Staley moved to the Lowcountry last summer after spending 13 years in private practice in Asheville, North Carolina. He sees patients at both Coastal Carolina Urology in Beaufort and at Beaufort Memorial Bluffton Medical Services in Westbury Park. To reach Dr. Staley, call (843) 524-7607.

VIVA,

Our Wonderful Worthy Waddell Mariculture Center

T

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • BY BRAD MCDONALD • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

hank GOD for Tom Davis, Bill Herbkersman and Weston Newton for going to bat for us, as they helped get an override of the governor’s veto of the $1,100,000.00 annual appropriation for the Waddell Mariculture Center’s immediate needs. The center is a very unique research and production facility and it plays a significant role in the state’s economy. Saltwater fishing has an economic value to South Carolina of nearly a billion dollars. How many trucks, boats, vacations, bait and fishing supplies are purchased each year for this state supported saltwater addiction? In two words, A LOT! The Waddell Mariculture Center limps around on an annual $350,000.00 funding and according to our sources, they usually run in the red and have to rely on local fundraisers and from revenues from the sale of Salt Water Fishing Licenses purchased through the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Hey DUDE, even if you don’t fish the salt water, go on-line and buy one. It’s only $10 bucks and it goes directly to this worth while cause. I’d hate to think of the condition of our awesome estuary if this great facility did not exist. The one time appropriation will allow General Manager, Al Stokes and company to take care of some serious structural problems with the facility and actually bring the building, which is owned by the state back up to code. To think our governor was going to allow this facility to be in such disrepair that it was going to have to be closed because it was unsafe for the many thousands of visitors, school children, multiple civic groups and employees is simply unimaginable, not to mention that the facility sustained some serious damage from this year’s abnormally cold winter destroying roofs, roads, ponds and drainage pipes. There are countless natural resource loving people who enjoy visits to the pretty amazing facility, that I’m sure many states and countries for that matter, wish they had as an asset. It’s really a one of a kind facility on our east coast. The Waddell Mariculture Center is a field experiment station of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and is one of the country’s largest and most sophisticated facilities for mariculture research. It was constructed in 1983 to develop propagation and farming techniques for marine and brackish species, mollusks, crustaceans and plants. The research and stocking programs that are generated at the WMC are state of the art

20

and are being copied by many interested states and foreign countries that understand the importance of farming seafood especially, as our annual appetite surpasses the natural supply. WMC accounted for the stocking of over 1,400,000 fish this past year to our South Carolina waterways which included cobia, red drum, speckled sea trout and striped bass. Their programs on educating the value of our ecosystem and the importance of water quality to the locals and visitors of the Lowcountry are really priceless if you ask me. The Friends of Waddell organization has set up a Waddell Fund, a Non-Profit fund that allows great stewards such as our local sportsmen and lovers of our natural resources to help fund this invaluable asset. Through various infusions of monies from such things as the, Community Foundation of The Lowcounty, The Taste of Waddell and some very generous folks that have donated via wills and in loved ones names, they can continue their great summer internship programs, work with USC-B and their Storm Water run-off program and maintain the facility with its many ponds with special liners & pumps that require constant maintenance and up keep. The WMC also works closely in conjunction with three of our state’s finest institutions; College of Charleston, University of South Carolina and Clemson University and assists them with their various research programs such as, genetics, developmental biology, pathology, nutrition, microbiology, food processing and engineering. Al would like to send out his sincere thanks and appreciation to all those that called and reached out to our local representatives and tell them of how unhappy we sportsmen and women were with the governor’s veto. It’s folks like us that will show those politicians up in Columbia what’s really important to us here in the Lowcountry. A BIG DUDE SALUTE to Al and all his fine employees; Deliah Arrington (Biologist), Matthew Brown (Maintenance Supervisor), Jeff Brunson (Biologist), Angelo Cammarano (Technician), Gregory Knothe (Biologist), Patrician Middleton (Administration Specialist), Kevin Pitts (Biologist), Jacob Richarson (Biologist) and Robbie O’Quinn (Technician). You may contact FriendsOfWaddell.org if you are interested in sending some extra help their way. Believe me, they could use it and it will be money well allocated DUDE.

WHAT TO DO WITH DO DUDE!

OLDFIELD Unveils New State of the Art Composting Facility BY BRAD MCDONALD

T

he beautiful Lowcountry plantation that is OLDFIELD, a long time Audubon Certified Cooperative Sanctuary that recognizes environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, chemical reduction & Safety, water conservation and water quality management, recently launched and unveiled it’s spanking new state of art Horse Waste Composting Facility. I really have never thought about what’s done with all the horse crap that is generated in Beaufort county via all the sea island stables in our area. But, as cowboys & girls that like to ride horses, we must be smart and mindful of all the horse dung we seem to be helping them produce. This facility is well thought out by a great group of partners that obviously are being good stewards to our natural resources. In this particular case, Oldfield, will be helping in the protection of the awesome Okatie River, the upriver headwater source to the Colleton River. A COMPOSTING FACILITY should be mandatory to all stables here in the Lowcountry for obvious reasons. It keeps the poo from getting in our waterways while composting down to some very green friendly plant fertilizer. Diane Leone, Supervisory DIstrict Conservationist from USDA-NRCS was on hand to talk the Oldfield community about the “Science of Composting” and how green smart it is, especially living as close to the salt-water wetlands and coast as we do here in the

22

Lowcountry. This pretty cool facility is set up in four stages of break down or decay. You can image the first stage is fresh poo and as you get to the fourth stage, there’s cubic yards of “free of smell” great horticulturally friendly natural fertilizing product. Available FREE to all Oldfield residents that would like to give their plants some valuable nutrients added to the soil. Jamie Selby, Oldfield General Manager and all the Oldfield residents would like to thank and recognize the OKATIE 319 PROJECT. A Special Tip of the hat to; Ginnie Kozak, Planning Director to the Lowcountry Council of Governments, The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, The US Environmental Protection Agency, The US Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Services, Beaufort County Soil and Water Conservation District, Beaufort & Jasper Counties, our many friends and neighbors in Sun City Hitlon Head, our fellow Oldfield residents and the Lowcountry Council of Governments. Hard to believe there’s that many good folks that care what we do with do DUDE. Oldfield is lucky to have Jude Dontje as our Manager of the Oldfield Equestrian Center. Jude will be glad to show those interested in, our new state of the art composting facility. Horse do done right DUDE! Now let’s get our horses watered down and safely back in their stables. WELCOME TO DUDE COUNTRY BY BILL MUTHIG

T

hese two pictures are of some of the newest “DUDES” in the Okatie area. Gator Girl Sandy & Fish Whisperer Mark are both from the state of Oregon and are hopefully going to build a new home here in the area soon. As you can see you don’t want to mess around with the “Gator Girl”! Yes, that is a 13 foot 2 inch Lowcountry gator she helped pull out of a local pond. Mark wished that he could catch a decent size fish. The one in the picture is a 7 pound largemouth bass. Mark said, he thinks that it is just too large to use as bait, too small to eat and no way is it big enough to mount! With this said, this DUDETTE & DUDE are some of the nicest people that you would ever want to have as neighbors! I would like to take this time to officially welcome them to the Okatie, South Carolina area.

COOKING

STYLE!

very DUDE loves fresh shrimp in the summer months when they are fresh from the shrimp boats. I’m sure you have your favorite recipes as do I, however I would like to share one with y’all that I’ve been enjoying my entire life. It’s called WADE BOWMAN SHRIMP! Wade was a DUDE back in my hometown of Hickory, North Carolina and he owned and ran a Fish Camp. Many country rednecks know of the so called Fish Camps that dotted the local rural areas of the Piedmont. You could generally look forward to seeing all your friends and their families there most Friday nights. Wade Bowman Shrimp is fried in a light tempura style batter, dipped in hot mustard and sweet and sour sauce. If you’re tired of just your basic fried shrimp, then give this a try. I have a feeling you’ll be putting it in your repertoire.

DRY MUSTARD

You have to buy dry mustard and mix with water to your preferred thickness. Dry mustard is good and brings tears to your eyes hot. However, if that’s too much trouble, Grey Poupon will do just fine.

SWEET & SOUR SAUCE

If you’ve never made this before you will end up using it for other great dishes with chicken and pork. (DUDE TIP; for your sweet and sour chicken and pork, add sliced sweet gherkin pickles, maraschino cherries and canned chunked pineapple to your sweet and sour sauce, before dumping it on your friend cubes of chicken or pork on rice)

SHRIMP PREPARATION

• Peel your shrimp but leave the tails on DUDE. (YES, real DUDES eat the tails!) • Butterfly them by slicing the top side down to the tail.

• 1 cup of sugar • 1/2 cup of white vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon of salt • 2 tablespoons of corn starch • 1 teaspoon of paprika

BATTER PREPARATION • 1 cup of sifted flour • 1 cup of ice cold water • 1/2 teaspoon of salt • 1/2 teaspoon of sugar • 1 egg • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil • Mix batter well and place all your shrimp in batter and make sure they are well coated. • Leave shrimp in batter for at least 30 minutes.

• Mix your dry ingredients first, then mix in your vinegar and bring to a boil while constantly stirring. Soon, you’ll see it starting to thicken up and when it gets nice and thick, turn the heat off. It keeps well for reuse in the fridge by the way. Dip your fresh out of the oil shrimp in the mustard, then dunk it in the sweet and sour sauce and you’ll be hooked. CAUTION: This recipe is terribly addictive, so prepare at your own risk DUDE! Bon Appetite!

• Deep Fry 375 until golden brown and they are floating.

Dear Harold, “Here’s all you have to know about men and women; Women are crazy, men are stupid. The main reason women are crazy is that men are stupid!” Signed, George Carlin Dear GC, You definitely are one of the funniest DUDE’s I’ve every seen. Loved you on Johnny Carson. RIP you funny man. HAROLD Dear Harold, As a teacher, I’m amazed at some students. Some for their brilliance, some for their ignorance, but it is our job to work with them as best we can, however due to questionable parenting skills, some just simply seem to be disrespectful and don’t give a flip. It makes it hard for us teachers to do our job. Take this exam I gave my students recently for example to test their logic, knowledge and rationale. FYI, THIS STUDENT OBTAINED 0% ON THE EXAM. Q1. In which battle did Napoleon die? A: His last battle. Q2. Where was the Declaration of Independence signed? A: At the bottom of the page. Q3. River Ravi flows in which state? A: A liquid state.

way you want, concrete floors are very hard to crack. OMG, what is our future going to look like?! Signed, Betty Rubble Dear BR, I would have given him 100% for his wit, call his or her parents and tell them to come pick em up after sending them to the principal’s office and then sign him as the opening act at the Comedy Club. HAROLD Dear Harold, I love David Feherty the CBS and Golf Channel announcer, who finds very unique, colorful and uninhibited ways of explaining or describing whatever is on his mind ... (probably always on time delay these days). I thought I’d share some of the funny things he’s said over the years that made me laugh: “It would be easier to pick a broken nose, than a winner in that group.”

“That’s a great shot with that swing.”

Q9. How can a man go eight days without sleeping? A: No problem, he sleeps at night. Q10. How can you lift an elephant with one hand? A: You will never find an elephant that has only one hand.. Q11. If you had three apples and four oranges in one hand and four apples and three oranges in other hand, what would you have? A: Very large hands. Q12. If it took eight men ten hours to build a wall, how long would it take four men to build it? A: No time at all, the wall is already built. Q13. How can you drop a raw egg onto a concrete floor without cracking it? A: Any

Dear JC. Poor DUDE! He must be ecstatically happy! I bet he plays a lot of golf and goes hunting and fishing quite regularly. HAROLD

“I am sorry Nick Faldo couldn’t be here this week, he is attending the birth of his next wife.”

Q5. What is the main reason for failure? A: Exams like this one.

Q8. If you throw a red stone into the blue sea what will it become? A: It will simply become wet and sink to the bottom.

Dear WF, Your husband’s name wouldn’t be FRED would it? Sometimes I wonder if women care more about money than happiness. Brad told me once that Money may not buy happiness but it sure can buy the the type of misery you can live with! HAROLD

“That ball is so far left, Lassie couldn’t find it if it was wrapped in bacon.”

Jim Furyk’s swing “looks like an octopus falling out of a tree.”

Q7. What looks like half an apple? A: The other half of the apple.

Dear Harold, What’s wrong with men these days? I heard a story recently I simply could not believe. At breakfast, a husband says to his wife, “What would you do if I won money playing the lottery?” She replied, “I’d take my half and leave you” she says.” “Great!” he says. “Here’s $6. I won $12 yesterday! Stay in touch.” Signed, Wilma Flintstone

Dear Harold, Here’s a story for those DUDES out there that are thinking of settling down. This DUDE brings his best buddy home for dinner unannounced at 5:30 after work. His wife begins screaming at him and his friend just sits and listens in. She rants, “My hair & makeup are not done, the house is a mess, the dishes are not done, the children won’t do their homework and are being rude by staying on their cell phones and computers all the time, I’m still in my pajamas and I can’t be bothered with cooking tonight! What the hell did you bring him home for?” The DUDE replied, “Because he’s thinking of getting married.” Signed, Jumpy Cliffs

“Fortunately, Rory is 22 years old, so his right wrist should be the strongest muscle in his body.”

Q4. What is the main reason for divorce? A: A marriage.

Q6. What can you never eat for breakfast? A: Lunch & dinner.

funny man and I love his show on the Golf Channel. Long Ashes Baby! HAROLD

“It’s OK - the bunker stopped it.” At Augusta 2011, “It’s just a glorious day. The only way to ruin a day like this would be to play golf on it.” “That was a great shot, if they’d have put the pin there today.” “Watching Phil Mickelson play golf is like watching a drunk chasing a balloon near the edge of a cliff.” “That green appears smaller than a Pygmie’s nipple.” Signed, Weird Al Shankavick Dear WAS, Brad and Cigar Joe Sweigart got to meet David Feherty at the Heritage this year. Seems they got invited to the CBS SPORTS head trailer to meet head honcho, Lance Barrow. They also got to meet Ian Baker Finch & Peter Costas and gave them all DUDE CIGARS, as well as their own box of Joe’s custom CBS SPORTS cigars. He’s a

Gray tree frogs are much more easier to hear than they are to see. I had wanted to photograph one for a while, but never could seem to find one, since they are mostly found high up in the trees. Well, as luck would have it, the opportunity to photograph one actually fell out of the blue! My wife, Gabrielle, and I were cleaning up in the back yard after a thunderstorm when I saw her duck and I asked what her what happened. “Something just fell out of the tree and smacked me in the head!”, she said. I looked on the ground and sure enough, there sat a stunned but otherwise okay little frog that I immediately identified as a gray tree frog! I picked him up and put him on a few of the dead branches that we had been removing from the yard and he just crawled up to the top of one and made himself comfortable. I went inside, grabbed my camera, and, well, you know the rest! Hey, sometimes things literally fall into place!!

“There’s no substitute for experience”

People depend on ATM’s for cash. An ATM will help you provide your customers the convenience of a one stop shopping and banking experience. Your customers will no longer need to stop at your competitors establishment to get cash (and spend it there). Customers will instead stop at your place of business because you can accommodate their cash needs.

BUILDS SALES

The typical ATM customer spends 20-25% more than a non-ATM customer.

COMPETITIVE EDGE

Having an ATM on premises builds loyalty from your customers by providing them with services that customers now expect.

SECURITY

An ATM from Vinco eliminates the need to keep large amounts of cash on your premises. Your customers will feel safe, secure and comfortable inside your establishment while accessing their cash.
