UDE would like to SALUTE OUR MILITARY and THANK GOD for our AMERICAN ARMED FORCES. This Winter 2015 issue takes on a military theme if you will, so let’s respect and THANK those that have and are serving our country. SALUTE! The United States of America is of course the greatest country on the planet and I think lately it seems that we have lost our way and are heading down a different road than we were intended to follow by our forefathers, aka the founders of our Constitution. Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, the Father of our Country George Washington. I don’t think this fine group of intelligent forethoughtful gentlemen who would be happy with what is going on with our country here in the year 2015. Why we are changing our values and traditions to appease a few in the minority that are supposedly offended by OUR WAY is beyond me. Getting rid of Christmas trees and Nativity Scenes, Treating our Enemy Terrorists with empathy & sympathy and better than we are treating our own Veterans, Pushing a Racial divide that’s not as bad as some may want you to believe exists, etc. I think we need to get back to our roots of where we came from DUDE. Let’s get back to the UNITED States of America, not the divided states and the hate filled congress would be a good place to start. UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE ARE GOING TO FALL! This great country was founded as ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE with LIBERTY & JUSTICE FOR ALL! As our currency has always clearly stated; IN GOD WE TRUST! YES, these are the foundations our country was formed on and we should not move away from them, rather we should embrace them whole heartedly. OH and yeah, I think it should be mandatory in schools like when I grew up that it was OK to say a Prayer and stand up and SAY THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG before classes start everyday. If this offends you and your children, you are allowed to not participate, but don’t make us change to suit your selfish needs. If it truly wrinkles your skirt or pants, then kindly do us all a favor and find another country to live in cause this is THE WAY WE ROLL in the great UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Now let’s do what we do best and saddle up our horses for a nice ride this Winter. Make sure your horses are warm, well fed and watered DUDES! Let’s get going, we’re burning daylight. Yee Haw Y’all, Giddy Up! This issue of DUDE, which obviously has a military flavor to it, needs to be dedicated to a Commander In Chief that we all should respect and be glad to have had as our top dog. This DUDE is none other than our 40th President of the United States and 33rd Governor of California, Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Born on February 6th, 1911 in a small town in Illinois, Tampico, the son of Nelie Clyde Wilson and John Edward “Jack” Reagan who where Irish Catholics. Nicknamed “DUTCH” by his father because of his fat little Dutchman like appearance and haircut, grew up hopscotching around the small towns of Monmouth, Gateburg and later in Chicago. Reagan was baptized and had a strong faith in the goodness of all people and the Disciples of Christ. He had a profound opposition to racial discrimination.

Young Ronnie attended Dixon High School and his first job was a lifeguard at Rock River in Lowell Park. Over a six year period, President Reagan performed 77 rescues before attending Eureka College, where he was a frat boy and a cheerleader, majoring in economics and sociology. Great backgrounds for a soon to be Governor and President. One would have to agree that these majors gave him a keen understanding and perspicaciousness of how be a successful leader of people. Call

him a “Jack of all Trades”, as he excelled in campus politics as president of his student body, was a member of the football team, captain of his swim team and was involved in theater.

DUTCH graduated in 1932 and became a broadcaster for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes where he progressed to making $100 per month. In 1937, while traveling with the Chicago Cubs he took a screen test with Warner Brothers Studio that led to a seven-year contract. He was “B-film star” until he appeared in Dark Victory with Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart, who has one of the best quotes of all times that I can not share with you on these pages. In 1940 he played the role of George “The Gipper” Gipp in the film Knute Rockne, All American. After that, he got his DUDE CREDENTIALS when starring with Errol Flynn in the Santa Fe Trail. Reagan’s “Made me a star” role in Kings Row put him on the map as one of Hollywood’s young generation of popular stars. He never got to take advantage of this newly found stardom as he was ordered to active duty with the United States Army

to the ending of the Cold War. He reinvigorated American morale and the American economy by reducing American reliance upon its government. Sure wish we had him as president today DUDE! One of his signature acts was a constitutional amendment on school prayer to restore the simple freedom of our citizens to offer prayer in public schools and institutions. It had been banned by the supreme court in 1962. Though Reagan was disappointed in the Supreme Court’s ruling that a moment of silence was not allowed, he continued to call for Congress to support voluntary prayer in schools and end the expulsion of GOD from America’s classrooms.

In 1981, John Hinckley shot the president and he was close to death but was released from the hospital in less than two weeks. If that doesn’t qualifiy him as a DUDE, I don’t know what does?! This made him the first president to survive being shot in an assassination attempt. DUTCH was a DUDE and believed that GOD had spared his life to fulfill a greater purpose. He was at the top of his game with an amazing 73% approval rating. He went on to handle the Air Traffic controllers strike, introduce Reaganomics, which dropped inflation from 12.5% to 4.4% and during his eight years GDP growth averaged 7.9% with it topping out with a growth rate of 12.2% in 1982. Pretty damn impressive if you look at the state of our nation today.

There was obviously something to his supply-side economics, advocating a laissez-fare “let them do” philosophy of government with minimal intrusions and his free-market fiscal policies. Compliment that philosophy with the across the board tax cuts and you have one happy American Economy. Why we haven’t learned those lessons is beyond me DUDE! President Reagan was the epitome of a Commander In Chief. He ordered a massive build up of in San Francisco.

President Reagan completed fourteen home-study Army Extension Courses and enlisted in the the United States Armed Forces and revived the B-1 Lancer Bomber program canceled by the Carter Army Reserve as a private assigned to Troop B, 322 Cavalry. He was commissioned as a second administration. This build-up produced the MX missile and the deployment of the Pershing missiles lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the cavalry in 1937. Our military ride continued as we trotted our horses in to the Officer’s Club on the Marine Corps Air Station to join our friends at the MOAA/Military Officers Association of America, who do such great work helping out our returning military personnel transition. A great facility, a fantastic delicious lunch and one of the most impressive group of DUDES you’ll ever want to meet. Colonels and Generals abound and we had the privilege of getting to meet Major General Robert E. Livingston USA of the South Carolina National Guard and learning more about our National Guard.

Be glad we have such and impressive National Guard here in our home state and I can promise you, they are in the good hands of a very capable leader. The Sound We Heard interrupting our lunch meeting Is The Sound of Freedom DUDE! Thanks for the invite Ladies and Gentlemen! Believe me, the pleasure was all mine and THANK YOU FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP & SERVICE TO OUR GREAT GOD BLESSED COUNTRY. As we start turning our horses back to the lower forty of the ranch, our dusty trail lead us once again to the Santa Elena Foundation.

We got to meet THE COUNT OF GUEMES himself, Alvaro Armada Barcaiztegui, a direct descendant of Pedro Menendez de Aviles, the first Governor of La Florida and the DUDE that started the settlement of Santa Elena on Parris Island for the Spanish back in the mid 1560’s. The Count is one smooth DUDE and I thought it would be fun to teach y’all more about Pedro himself. Feel free to contact their website and join this great group as they preserve the heritage of America’s first settlement by Europeans.

As we start seeing the ranch come in to sight our horses start getting a little frisky and we slow them down a bit and take time to appreciate our beautiful natural resources Mother Nature has blessed us with. We couldn’t help but think of a better way to show you some of our great Lowcountry outdoors than to have the Photography Club of Beaufort join us in OLDFIELD and capture some of this magnificence to share with you. Yes, we are lucky to live here in the majestic Lowcountry of South Carolina. Nice having you folks visit us on the trail and break some bread.

We want to keep you DUDES and DUDETTES educated out there on the trail, so the DUDE QUIZ also has a military theme to it this issue. Learn more about our two great Marine Corps facilities that are the Marine Corps Air Station and Parris Island Marine Recruit Depot. Heck, I even learned some things putting together the DUDE QUIZ! Ah yes, back on the ranch and just outside the gates we had to stop in and water our horses down at the newly opened Port Royal Sound Foundation Maritime Center located at the Lemon Island public boat landing on the Chechessee River. WOW! What a cool place this is DUDE! Make sure you pack up the youngsters and pay this great interactive educational place a visit. We ran in to the Beaufort, Hilton Head and OLDFIELD fishing clubs there one evening. Good friends, Cold beer and Ubiquitous Smiles! Great seeing many DUDE FAMILY MEMBERS enjoying this exciting place.

Now that we have the horses groomed, fed and back in their stalls, we need some grub. Well, I smell something good cooking and if you’ve been on Bay Street in downtown Beaufort, you will have smelled this too and it’s none other that Q on Bay. Time for some COOKING DUDE STYLE. What’s this? A smoked, then deep fried turkey! Son, you talk about going to slap your Mama! Nice job DUDES! Thanks for sharing.

Well, we’re worn out, our bellies are full, so it’s time for a DUDE CIGAR and several cold ones by the fire. Nothing makes this time more enjoyable that visiting with our Wild and Crazy Editor of our publication, HAROLD THE LARGEMOUTH BASS. Yes, a fish is our editor and people send him pictures. White Squirrel of Brevard, NC

I’m also fortunate to be relatively close to the Pisgah National Forest, near the town of Brevard. While visiting there recently, I discovered that Brevard is very proud of a unique wildlife anomaly. They are home to one of the largest populations of white squirrels in the United States. These squirrels are a white color morph of the regular gray squirrel (Sciuris carolinensis), but they are not albino. For them, the correct term is leucistic. Albinism is a lack of melanin in the fur and skin, leaving white fur, pink eyes, etc.(think white rabbits). Leucistic is a reduced amount of melanin, so the fur may be mostly white, but the eyes are dark and the skin and fur has some pigmentation (the opposite of leucistic is melanistic or mostly black/ brown, such as the black squirrels of Kent State in Ohio). As you can see from the picture, these cute squirrels have dark eyes, patchy color on the exposed skin of their ears, and a degree of color on their head and down their back. Now, these squirrels are not as easy to see as you might think. I spent a couple hours, scouring parks, etc. until I finally found one on the campus of the Brevard College. Once I found one, I began to see others, as well. These little guys were pretty cooperative for the camera and gave me some great shot opportunities. Suddenly, they froze and in the distance, I heard a bunch of other squirrels squawking and barking. Out of nowhere, a huge red-tailed hawk swooped down, being harassed by a flock of crows! All the squirrels shot off to the security of evergreens, leaf nests, and hollows, effectively ending my photo-shoot. It’s good to know the security system of crows and squirrels works, even for white squirrels!

Well, as much as I miss the Lowcountry, I’m doing just fine in the “upcountry”.

I miss many of the Lowcountry folks I count as friends and hope to stay in touch, with the head DUDE, Brad, being one of them! I hope you have enjoyed my articles and photos in the past and even though I won’t be in the Lowcountry, my heart will always be fond of this special place and who knows where I’ll end up next? UDE if there’s ever been an event that made you feel good about your country and those that sacrifice for our FREEDOM, it is this very event. Mark Peterson called me about 3 years ago to introduce me to this event and it was a blessing.

Now every October I look forward to getting together with this great group of Americans; The Safari Club International’s Family, The great folks that are in charge of Nemours Wildlife Foundation Plantation (nemourswildlifefoundation.org) and its director, Ernie Wiggers, Local Law Enforcement Officers; South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, South Carolina State Patrol, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department and USMC Military Police, USMC Soldiers/Volunteers, The Parris Island Marine Corps Band & Color Guard, Colonel Peter D. Buck from MCAS Beaufort and Brigadier General Terry V. The crowd is all smiles, but when you see the smiles of these wounded war heroes faces waving back at you....well, it’s PRICELESS! They are back in the HOME OF THE BRAVE and they are being appreciated and treated some good ole Lowcountry outdoor American fun.

The event has grown over it’s first 10 years and Brigadier General Terry V. Williams, presented Mr. & Mrs. Mark Peterson of Safari Club International with a Plack recognizing them for their magnanimous effort in creating this very worth while event. A BIG DUDE SALUTE! We’ve met many new friends at this event, as well as always catching up with many friends of DUDE. You guys know who you are! BUT, the real event is these American Wounded War Heroes getting to have the assistance of some fine outdoor DUDES to take them in to the bush and seek out some edibles. This event also welcomes some very deserving sick or injured youngsters and other disabled adults. There was a record breaking 55 disable hunters this year. Also, this year they invited all local World War II veterans to join in all the festivities. It was great to see and Thank these members of the Greatest Generation.

Well, these Redneck DUDES managed to get lucky as they say and Jimbo shot himself a nice South Carolina Lowcountry 6 point buck. BAAM! Get R Done DUDE! It’s no coincidence that this annual hunt is set up to take place at the peak of the Lowcountry whitetail rut. This DUDE said he felt like he had just won the lottery. Pretty Special indeed.

If that doesn’t make you smile, then you might want to check you pulse.

What’s nice about this superiorly run event is that these American Hero Wounded Warriors get to take home a cooler full of fresh venison (Special Thanks to Burbage’s Meat Processing in Ravenel, SC) and they can get a FREE, donated mount of their hunt compliments of Pernell’s Taxidermy. Yeah, this is a pretty special thing to witness. Makes you feel good and proud to be an American.

Not all the wounded warriors on hand are hunters but they have as much fun as well. When I saw this DUDE get out of his dilapidated old electric wheelchair and get saddled up in his new TRACK CHAIR, thanks and nice job, Charles Pollak of Independencefund.org and Bill O’Reilly’s publicity on FOX’s The O’Reilly Factor, the grin turned immediately I AM THERAPY DU DE to big smile and brought tears to my eyes. His caring wife seemingly a bit anxious asked him, “Honey, how does it feel?” His answer, “See y’all later I’m going on a test drive!” and off he went through the rugged field headed towards the beautiful Coosaw River, like the Road Runner burning a smoke trail out in the dessert running from the Wylie Coyote. I laughed while I was crying DUDE! DUDES let’s remember OUR FREEDOM is not FREE! It comes at the expense of some brave men and women who have chosen their country over their families, so we can all do the things we get to do in this great country.

When you see an American Hero wounded warrior, don’t HONEY, I’M GOING turn and look the other way. Go up to this Proud Warrior ON A TEST DRIVE and THANK HIM or HER FOR THEIR SERVICE! They will appreciate it more than you know. Let’s not forget that some never make it home and they all will remain in our thoughts, prayers and gratitude.

AMERICAN SNIPER Staying on

I

n 1942 Franklin Roosevelt was able to dissuade his generals and override the British to begin America’s European campaign in North Africa.

FDR did so primarily because he sensed that the inexperience of the American citizen soldiers would lead to disaster if they started the war facing the Nazi’s top troops in a cross channel invasion of France. That invasion would come, but first the American generals and officers had to “blood” the new troops: the soldiers, coming from all walk of ordinary American life, had to be turned into killers.

Clint Eastwood’s new movie, AMERICAN SNIPER makes one thing clear: America certainly knows now how to make citizen soldiers effective and necessary killers. While the Academy Awards may have come and gone by the time you read this, it is worth saying that this film takes a close look at the modern American soldier, in this case, the famous and most successful sniper in American war history, Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper). In doing so and without glorifying battle or killing, Eastwood tells an efficient, focused and clear tale of a boy from the American west who grew up to be an American hero, though perhaps late to be nationally recognized outside of Texas and the military.

Starting out as a dusty, knockabout rodeo cowboy, Kyle switches to the military after seeing images of the Beirut barracks bombing and finding that, as a life’s vocation, bronco busting was an empty performance. Entering the Navy S.E.A.L. program—arguably the top of our elite military training courses which comes as near as possible to get a soldier (or “frogman”) over the hump of killing someone–-Kyle emerges as an exceptional marksman, leading to his assignment as a sniper as America enters the post 9/11 era.

Along the way to his first tour of duty in Desert Storm, Kyle enjoys a memorable bar romance and eventually marries Taya (Sienna Miller) who seems uncertain about the prospect of being a military wife. Through one scare after another, Taya emerges through the story as a frightened and worried wife, yet strong in making a blunt and insistent argument that Kyle’s work was hurting his life as husband and father. At one point as Kyle considers yet another tour, Taya threatens not to be there for him when Kyle returns, but she never stops being loyal and there for him.

Despite her fears and driven to “stop the bad guys” and protect his bud-

the Horse dies, Kyle--just as we saw when he was winning fancy belts with relentless bronco riding--goes back for tour after tour committed to his work as a sniper, sometimes joining the ground forces, and becomes legendary (his nickname was “Legend”) for the his record of successful “kill shots.”, but also for his fearlessness and leadership. Still, the war is complex, brutal and clearly not resolved: women and children, on both sides, are in the kill mix. Initially using tight, constricted ground shots, Eastwood covers the tricky battleground house-to-house challenges for Kyle and his fellow soldiers, while later in the movie captured by high drone-fed cityscape shots, we see the evolving war, its complexities, are reminded throughout the intense battle scenes that this war is not the frequently depicted and familiar World War II combat theatre of fields, streams, and forests.

Bradley Cooper, the star of a variety of hugely successful and popular films, was also a producer of American Sniper and has a Best Actor nomination to go along with his producing efforts. The depiction feels right. Unusually capable, Kyle was not the quickest to pick up on other’s feelings or needs, but he comes around in a most believable way. And if perhaps one of the duller tools in the shed, Cooper allows Kyle to grow steadily into much more capable of eventual sharpening than we might have originally thought.

Two other highly acclaimed “sand” films, as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are called, had similar issues. In the fictional The Hurt Locker, a successful veteran cannot adjust to a stroll down his local Publix foodstuffs aisle; he has to go back to the work the military duty of defusing bombs because life is meaningless otherwise. And in Zero Dark Thirty, like this film a basedon-true story, the mission and message was clear as avenging the 2001 attacks was always of specific and hugely national importance.

For American Sniper, the message is that we need to enable good men and women to do necessary, if sometimes brutal and merciless, service for our country. And when they return, these veterans need help but can reclaim lives of purpose, service, and love in their families and community. As the film’s conclusion—and you need to stay through the credits—emphasizes: Chris Kyle was the best example of that person.

rowing up a hillbilly in the North Carolina foothills, I really wasn’t in the company of military facilities and large numbers of active veterans. But, ever since I started DUDE here in Beautiful Beaufort County, I have been drawn in and absorbed in the Veterans of the Lowcounty. Do keep in mind, I am also talking about the ones that lay in rest in our wonderful piece of land we call home. I have a much greater appreciation and respect for our Veteran War Heroes now that I’m from Beaufort County, South Carolina.

This past Fall I got to participate and witness two heart wrenching events that honor our Veterans; The Veteran’s Day Ceremonies and the Wreaths Across America event at the BEAUFORT NATIONAL CEMETERY, located 1601 Boundary Street, across the street from the public tennis courts and BRICKS ON BOUNDARY, one of our favorite DUDE WATERING HOLES. Open daily from 800 to sunset. If you’ve never been to either one of these great events then you need to put them on your bucket list. These are caring, respectable, appreciative American ceremonies that you should want to be a part of each year.

First up is the Veterans Day Ceremonies at the Beaufort National Cemetery following the parade on November 11th. Take a look around. This is AMERICA DUDE! Young, old, white, black, Asian, hispanic, active duty,

retired veterans, local dignitaries, all are gathered near the entrance of this hallowed place all paying homage to those that SERVED OUR GREAT COUNTRY. They are the best of us and we must never forget their sacrifice.

The Wreaths Across America event at the Beaufort National Cemetery is also a heart felt, respectable event. To say that local bikers show up for this worth while gesture is an understatement. HOG HEAVEN DUDE! I have to tip my hat to local biker groups who raise funds throughout the year to grace one of our many fallen heroes grave sites & head stones with a fresh Fraser fir, red bow ladened wreath.

The Spirit of Christmas abounds!

Going to events such as these restores my faith in this great country of ours. It’s nice to see a group that is ALL IN and by that I mean no prejudgices , just everyone being respectable caring AMERICANS. Yeah, this is the BEST COUNTRY ON EARTH and I’m proud to be a part of it DUDE! ONE NATION, UNDER GOD WITH LIBERTY & JUSTICE FOR ALL!!

Thank you ladies, it was scrumptious! What a great way to get a good friend, Bob Freeman. This particular luncheon was held at the meeting started. After lunch, the new members of the Beaufort MOAA board were sworn New Officers Club on the Marine Corps AIr Station, Beaufort. ast issue I introduced you DUDE followers to the SANTA ELENA FOUNDATION and their ongoing fantastic efforts to bring this important story to the forefront of American history. Yeah, we know the story of Jamestown in 1607 as told and documented by our war winning English forefathers BUT, if the Spanish would have won, I think Santa Elena would certainly be documented as the first real European settlement in America. Of course, now, we’re really biased as this place is located in our very own beautiful Beaufort County, South Carolina, more particularly on Parris Island, Marine Recruit Depot. There is of course a WHY? and it was the battle to see who would conquer the New World: the French, the Spanish or the English. But there is no question about the WHO? of Santa Elena and it is none other than one bad ass DUDE named Pedro Menendez de Aviles, the first governor of La Florida. Let’s get to know this DUDE. Before we get into Pedro’s spectacular biography, DUDE was fortunate enough to be invited this past Fall by the Santa Elena Foundation Board of Directors and it’s Executive Director, Dr. Andrew J. Beall to actually meet THE COUNT of GUEMES, aka Alvaro Armada Barcaiztegui, who is a direct descendent of Pedro Menendez de Aviles and has been named IX Count of Revilla-Gigedo and XX Adelantado Mayor of La Florida by His Majesty Felipe VI, King of Spain. The COUNT is one smooth DUDE. It was nice to get to meet, speak with him personally and ask him questions about the Story of Santa Elena and his direct descendent Pedro Menendez. I found it interesting how the story is resonating in the country of Spain, as it seemingly has resurfaced as a top historical story lately. “Can you imagine what these people lived like and what they went through in the 1560’s? Sailing all the way across the Atlantic Ocean in a sailing flagship multiple times!”, exclaims the COUNT. In fact, Pedro Menendez crossed the Atlantic more than 30 times during his life. Pretty Amazing indeed. The COUNT spent several days in Beaufort County giving a few talks to local students and actually getting to visit the land where his descendent set up the first sustained settlement in the America. Can you imagine the pride this man felt when he was standing on the actual ground that is part of his family’s distinguished history 450 years ago when they set up the first colonial capital in America in 1569, SANTA ELENA?!

In 1564 French soldiers under the command of Rene Laudommiere at Fort Caroline, (modern day Jacksonville) the second colony of the French Huguenots, located on the St. John’s River, started to run out of supplies and food so they started a mutiny. Frenchman and self-proclaimed Captain-General and Viceroy of New France, Jean Ribault (that’s with a “L”, yes Ribaut road is misspelled) was sent to re-enforce the force and stabilize the situation and fortify the French’s positions in Florida.

Enter Pedro Menendez, as he was ordered by the King of Spain, Phillip II to destroy all the French settlements in La Florida. A pretty tall task indeed, especially coming from all the way on the other side

of the Atlantic Ocean. The race was on to see which country was to settle the now continuous United States of America through trans-oceanic convoys.

Though Ribault after being released from prison in England had a two week head start on Menendez, he had no idea what Pedro and his boys were bringing to squash his efforts. On June, 29, 1965 Menendez left Cadiz for the Indies with more than 1,500 men, including 29 wives of the soldiers and several ships led by his huge 900 ton flagship, San Pelayo. DUDE that’s a big ship back in the mid 1500‘s. Well, these bad ass Spanish DUDES kicked Jean Ribault and his forces butts at Matanzas Beach Inlet after re-grouping due to another hurricane that scattered Menedez’s fleet and had forced the San Pelayo to limp in to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Matanzas is Spanish for “slaughters.”

Imagine the carnage after these mass executions.

There were reports of bodies being hung in trees with the inscription, “Hanged, not as Frenchmen, but as heretics.” Of course the Spanish and Menendez, as devout Catholics justified this as they labeled Ribault and his Frenchmen as Lutheran heretics. Pedro had now established a pretty serious military garrison in the now city of St. Augustine, Florida.

Menendez was an experienced seaman as you can imagine. Prior to all this, he had fought against the French corsairs in the Bay of Biscay off the coast of his native Asturias.

He even accompanied King Phillip II on a state visit to England to marry English Queen, Mary Tudor. Prior to the run in with Ribault, Menendez had developed a substantial mercantile interest in the Indies and in 1563 he lost a fortune and also lost most of his fleet during a September hurricane that scattered his fleet off the coast of Florida. He also lost his only son during this tragic year in his life.

Once Menedez had secured this area for Spain, he reported back to the King in October of 1565 on the events that had taken place. There were concerns that there were remnants of the French colony off the coast of Georgia in the Santa Elena area. On April 1st, 1566 Pedro left St. Augustine with one large ship, two shoal draft frigates and 150 soldiers to secure the coast as far north as Punta de Santa Elena. Menendez befriended the Orista Indians as he assisted them after a group of Guale warriors had burned their village. Pedro and the Orista chief went on a short trip down the river to the site of the former French colony of Charlesfort. There, on the southern point of Parris Island they found a commanding view of the harbor at Santa Elena. This is where he set up and erected Fort San Felipe.

That summer there was trouble with some sixty men who mutinied and took off south to Cuba. Only 30 men were left behind to secure the fort and their efforts to grow crops to survive failed due to planting on low ground with salt water intrusions. These DUDES were in a very precarious situation.

In July 1566, Captain Juan Pardo came to the rescue. Pardo’s arrival eased the severe shortages. When Menendez returned on August 20, 1566, he was quite pleased to see how Captain Pardo, Antonio Gomez,

Santa Elena Foundation, Executive Director, Dr. Andy Beall, DUDE and THE COUNT of GUEMES, aka Alvaro Armada Barcaiztegui, who is a direct descendent of Pedro Menendez de Aviles and has been named IX Count of Revilla-Gigedo and XX Adelantado Mayor of La Florida by His Majesty Felipe VI, King of Spain master carpenter from Havana, and Esteban de Las Alas had secured the fort making it more permanent rather than temporary. There was now a stockade of earth, stakes and facings with 6 bronze cannons for defense. Now the Spanish could start expansion of Fort San Felipe to accommodate a much larger garrison to protect the settlement from French corsairs. With Royal support, Menendez appointed Las Alas governor and captaingeneral of Florida. Las Alas governed from Santa Elena and thus in August of 1566, it became the capital of the new province. Adelantado Menendez had finally accomplished the goal of King Phillip II from the one he established back in 1557. In 1573, there were complaints about Menendez and his business practices and their was a full-scale investigation conducted. Menendez was currently back in Spain preparing yet another fleet to return to Florida to reorder the colony. It was said Menendez kept cattle promised to the colonists on the seacoast and Juan de la Vandera who had replaced Las Alas as governor of Santa Elena was systematically plundering the colony. Menendez was embarrassed by the investigation and the stories of scandal were verified by multiple witnesses and before he could set sail with his latest formed fleet he died on September 17th at the age of 55. He was buried at Llanes in September of 1574. Years later, his remains were removed to the church of San Nicholas in his native Aviles. • One Turkey (any size, prefer 15 to 20 lbs.)

• Q Chicken Rub (approximately 2 to 3 ounces) • 5 Sprigs of Fresh Thyme • 5 to 7 Sprigs or Stems with Leaves of Fresh Rosemary • One Smoker • One Deep Fryer

PREPARATION:

1. Smoke Turkey for 8 to 9 Hours at 190 Degrees (20 lb. bird) 2. Once Finished Smoking Remove Bird From Heat, Rest for at Least One Hour, and Then Place in Refrigerator. (Note this is a very important step so the skin does not peel off when frying.)

3. Get the Deep Fryer Ready and up to 325 to 350 Degrees. Frying This Bird at 325 Degrees is Ideal. If Oil is at 350 Degrees it should Fall to 325 Degrees Once Placing the Cold Bird in. Try Keeping at 325 Degrees.

4. Fry Bird for 15 to 20 Minutes until Skin is Crispy.

This past Fall SCDNR Restocked more Red Drum around the Chechessee River, via the Glenn Landing at Lemon Island next to the Newly Opened PORT ROYAL SOUND FOUNDATION MARITIME CENTER. Almost 100,000 1 to 2” fry were slowly released along the grass lines of this scenic pristine river. COVER PHOTOGRAPHY MARVIN BOUKNIGHT I discovered that Brevard is very proud of the largest populations of white squirrels in the United States. These squirrels are a white color morph of the regular gray squirrel (Sciuris carolinensis), but they are not albino. For them, the correct term is leucistic. Albinism is a lack of melanin in the fur and skin, leaving white fur, pink eyes, etc.(think white rabbits). Leucistic is a reduced amount of melanin, so the fur may be mostly white, but the eyes are dark and the skin and fur has some pigmentation.

Dear Harold, Did you hear on the news about a Southern California man who was put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found he owned 100 guns and allegedly had 100,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his home? The house also featured a secret escape tunnel. By Southern California standards, someone owning 100,000 rounds is considered “mentally unstable.” In Arizona, he’d be called “an avid gun collector.” In Arkansas, he’d be called “a novice gun collector.” In Utah, he’d be called “moderately well prepared,” but they’d probably reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity of stored food.” In Kansas, he’d be “A guy down the road you would want to have for a friend. In Montana, he’d be called “The neighborhood ‘Go-To’ guy.”

In Idaho, he’d be called “a likely gubernatorial candidate.” In Georgia, he’d be called “an eligible bachelor.” In North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas he would be called “a deer hunting buddy.”
