Despite the uncertainties thrown up by Brexit, 2016 proved to be a fantastic year for Bradt – indeed, the best year in the company’s 42-year history! We saw very encouraging sales growth, significantly outperforming the rest of the market. And we became the only publisher ever to win the ‘grand slam’ of major guidebook awards – our guides claiming first place in the Wanderlust Awards, Travel Media Awards, and British Guild of Travel Writers Awards. These would be special achievements by any standards, but are particularly noteworthy given that Bradt is the sole independent company among the UK’s top 10 guidebook publishers. Our 2017 list is as colourful as ever. We honour our reputation for publishing unique titles with the only standalone guides to Greenland (p.13) and the Outer Hebrides (p.4), and a guide to the epic Via Dinarica hiking trail from Slovenia to Albania (p.7). We have new editions of some of our flagship titles, including Madagascar (p.5), Iceland (p.7) and Zanzibar (p.8), as well as Iran (p.2), which is on everyone’s travel hotlist. There are some enticing UK titles, most notably Phoebe Smith’s Britain’s Best Small Hills (p.6) – a follow-up to her hugely successful Wilderness Weekends – and Brian Jackman’s Wild About Britain (p.6), an evocative collection of nature writing. Roam Alone (p.4) is a sort of sequel to our best-selling anthology To Oldly Go, and features true tales of intrepid solo travel by members of the public. And – cue suitable fanfare! – we are especially excited to announce that we now have British royalty among our Bradt authors. How to Raise a Cheetah (p.9) by HRH Princess Michael of Kent tells the fascinating story of her early life in Africa and her enduring love affair with the fastest cat on earth. I’m proud of our achievements in 2016, which reflect the passion and hard work of the entire team, from the in-house editors and designers to the distributors, agents and booksellers around the world who have supported us so well. Thank you all. Here’s looking forward to 2017 – and further right royal success!

ROAM ALONE
Inspiring tales by reluctant solo travellers Eds. Jennifer Barclay, Hilary Bradt
Following on the heels of To Oldly Go!, one of the UK’s bestselling travel titles of 2015, this new unique title from Bradt, showcasing a brand new collection of remarkable travellers’ tales with a different slant, celebrates solo travellers, who now make up one third of all those embarking on escorted holidays. All the contributors were initially reluctant solo travellers, apprehensive about taking the plunge to go it alone after years of travel with a partner or friend. Some have embarked on the trip of a lifetime, walking or cycling alone through potentially hostile countries, but finding only kindness – with a few hairy adventures thrown in. One story is by Bradt founder Hilary Bradt, who confronted her fears and set out to fulfil a childhood dream to ride a horse through Ireland shortly after her marriage broke up. Others are widows and widowers in their later years who were anxious about joining an organised trip on their own or who wanted to make a difference in the world by volunteering their experience and knowledge. Many ages, many personalities, but one common goal: to travel, and one stumbling block: anxiety. Part literature, part guide, with tips for successful solo travel. • A unique title on an increasingly popular subject • Includes tips and advice on a trouble-free solo trip • Entertaining, inspiring, amusing, reassuring… A good read April 2017 ■ 1st edition ■ £10.99 ■ ISBN 9781784770495 198mm x 130mm ■ 240pp

WILD ABOUT BRITAIN
A lifetime of award-winning nature writing Brian Jackman
A new collection of award-winning journalist Brian Jackman’s nature and travel writings from the past 40 years. This is a nationwide celebration of coast and countryside, concentrating in particular on Britain’s wildlife and the wild places in which its most spectacular species are found, but also touching on fishing, sailing and the way Britain’s history has shaped the landscape. ‘Wild about Britain is not a guidebook’ says Brian Jackman. ‘It’s an extended love letter to the British countryside; a personal view covering more than four decades of travels in the wilder parts of Britain.’ Brian Jackman writes eloquently and evocatively, conjuring up the sights and sounds of everything from barnacle geese on the salt marsh of an Islay loch to star gazing on Exmoor. Ancient oaks, red kites, huge mirror carp, the oldest path in Britain and the Border reivers are all included. • Award-winning writing from one of Britain’s most respected nature writers, currently writing for The Daily Telegraph • Foreword by Simon Barnes • Illustrations by Jonathan Truss

Her Royal Highness Princess Michael of Kent
We are delighted to be publishing this charming autobiographical tale from Princess Michael of Kent which tells of a girl growing up and the incredible bond that can exist between people and animals. Beautifully written by a natural storyteller and packed with fabulous photographs, it is also a wonderful portrait of Africa – the cheetah version of Born Free – and will delight readers worldwide. In the early 1960s, Marie Christine von Reibnitz (who would later become HRH Princess Michael of Kent) lived with her father on his farm in Mozambique. Then just a teenager, Princess Michael was entranced by the African landscape, by the wildlife and by the people she met. It was one of the happiest times of her life and she recounts that it was an orphaned cheetah cub (called Tess) who played a huge part in making it so. The relationship between the young Princess Michael and Tess, whom she hand-reared and later successfully released into the wild having trained her to hunt and survive on her own, will touch every reader’s heart. The events of that period have remained with Princess Michael for the rest of her life and in How to Raise a Cheetah she recalls not just the tale of Tess, but also the realities of life in Africa: from waking up in the middle of the night to find her father had just shot a lioness that was about to eat her to discovering a deadly Black Mamba curled up inside the loo! Vivid, moving and hugely engaging, replete with anecdotes and hair-raising encounters, this is another major natural history autobiography following the huge success of Jonathan Scott’s Big Cat Man in 2016. • Charming and heart-warming tale from a natural story-teller, HRH Princess Michael of Kent • Packed with gorgeous photographs which evoke the spirit of time and place • The cheetah version of Born Free

TIBET
Michael Buckley Exploring ethnic Tibet independently is a challenge. This new edition provides all the information needed: motoring, mountainbiking and trekking options are all covered, plus advice and guidelines on cultural etiquette, local customs, and travelling with minimum impact on Tibet’s culture and environment. • Encompasses the wider region of ethnic Tibet, with more detailed coverage of the Amdo and Kham regions than in other guidebooks • Strong on map data – extremely difficult to find in Tibet itself
