Last year’s catalogue came on the back of the most successful 12 months in Bradt’s history. Well, this is a new catalogue but we’re proud to say the story remains the same: yet again, we’ve witnessed a year of record-breaking sales, and of industry awards. Jini Reddy’s Wild Times – a guide to activities that connect you with nature, from horse whispering to urban birding – was voted Best Guidebook of the Year by the British Guild of Travel Writers, and Bradt was shortlisted for major accolades by both the Independent Publishers’ Guild and at the British Book Awards. Despite the mass of crowd-sourced information and anonymous reviews available online, there’s still a strong appetite for carefully curated travel information written by expert authors. As you’d expect, given Bradt’s pioneering reputation, our 2018 list is full of books for the adventurous and wild at heart. The Wilderness Cookbook (p.15) by seasoned outdoors specialist Phoebe Smith provides a host of imaginative recipes and cooking tips for wild campers. Paddling Britain by Lizzie Carr (p.14) covers 60 atmospheric waterways to explore by kayak, canoe or stand-up paddle board. And we add two titles to our series of travel literature with Saving Lucy: a girl, a bike and a street dog by Ishbel Holmes (p.10) – the moving true-life account of the extraordinary bond that developed between a roundthe-world cyclist and a feral dog she meets along the way – and Beastly Journeys (p.9), a collection of heart-warming tales about travelling with animals. There are of course new editions of longstanding flagship favourites like Ethiopia (p.13), Rwanda (p.12) and Botswana (p.8), but we also further bolster our coverage of Europe with new regional guides to Cheshire in England (p.3), The Vendée in France (p.7) and Emilia-Romagna in Italy (p.7). In 52 European Wildlife Weekends (p.6), James Lowen cherry picks a year of colourful wildlife breaks for nature lovers. As ever, we hope you find this a creative and inspiring list of titles, and that 2018 is a year of happy travels!

BEASTLY JOURNEYS
Unusual Tales of Travel with Animals Eds. Jennifer Barclay & Hilary Bradt ‘What are those animals, please?’ ‘Armadillos. They are rather charming little creatures, actually, with hard protective shells.’ ‘Oh, tortoises.’ ‘No. Armadillos.’ ‘Maybe they are a kind of lobster.’ ‘No, they are not lobsters,’ I said patiently. ‘They are armadillos.’
David Attenborough So writes David Attenborough in this new anthology of true stories about travelling with animals, featuring everything from hilarious holidays with pets to journeys on which wild animals somehow came along for the ride. Its publication completes the loose trilogy from Bradt of anthologies about unusual travel: To Oldly Go, one of the bestselling travel-writing titles of 2015, and Roam Alone, published to great acclaim in April 2017. In Beastly Journeys there are stories involving elephants, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas, dogs, cats, birds, a goldfish, hedgehogs, a tortoise, and a cockerel. There are touching stories about the love between dogs and their adoptive owners and entertaining ones involving less welcome animals such as the donkey and llamas which wouldn’t cooperate, and an uninvited bot-fly larva. Tales of animal smuggling also feature – but all in the best interests of the animal.
NEW TITLES AND NEW EDITIONS FOR 2018 – JUNE
NEW TRAVEL WRITING
A mix of new, previously unpublished writers and old favourites are included, with extracts from writers such as Isabella Bird (Unbeaten Tracks in Japan), John Steinbeck (Travels with Charley: In Search of America) and Robert Louis Stevenson (Travels with a Donkey), not to mention modern favourites such as Gerald Durrell, David Attenborough and Mark Shand. In this new anthology, read about the travelling musicians from Russia who needed a guinea pig to warm the maestro’s hands before each performance; a rabbit in Ghana which had a custom-made waistcoat stitched for it in the market; and a ship’s cat that learned to catch mice with a bait of cheddar cheese. Then, of course, there’s the ‘jack’ donkey which travelled the length of Baja California impregnating willing females. Compelling, engaging, surprising, humorous and entertaining… if this book proves one thing it’s that travel with animals is every bit as unpredictable as you would expect it to be. “Fish got a ticket, has he?” asked the stationmaster. Emma Macdonald “When travel writers, particularly British ones, work with unfamiliar animals, it is customary, to record a period of initial difficulties, where it seems as if the animal will never be tractable. This is followed by useful tips from locals and a realisation that one’s own ignorance was causing many of the difficulties. Eventually the animal will, at a point where the success of the venture hangs in the balance, perform some act of magnificent endurance or courage: all is forgiven, and, at the end of the trip, there is a tearful parting, at least on the side of the human, and, as for the animal – well – if only they could speak. I want to say that I shall hate that little bastard until the end of time.” John Harrison June 2018 ■ 1st edition ■ £10.99 ■ ISBN 9781784770815 198mm x 130mm ■ 272pp ■ 10 illustrations

Region “Britain’s favourite bus routes: what a great idea!” JOAN BAKEWELL, Baroness Bakewell DBE
Bus-Pass Britain is the perfect antidote to speed for explorers of all ages. The book reveals how buses are back in fashion, their popularity boosted by a growing cohort of bus-pass holders who are venturing ever further afield by bus. It maps the unsung appeal of local buses that jostle for space in crowded city streets just as much as it rejoices in the rural routes that hug the English coast or probe remote valleys in Wales and Scotland. We invited the British public to write about their favourite bus routes, creating a mosaic of journeys from across Britain. Bus-Pass Britain is more than just a practical guide to 50 fine routes: it is an exuberant celebration of a mode of transport which is both social and sustainable. Welcome aboard!
