Mom, and Brady Charlene Michaux Publisher/Editor charlie@bradymediainc.com Family holiday traditions spice childhood with magical joy and anticipation. Like me, you likely cherish wonderful memories of your own family’s annual rituals, a powerful and welcome way of creating strong family bonds. Extra creativity comes into play when partners find ways to combine and blend favorite childhood customs as a springboard for starting new ones. Whatever your tradition, old or new, we understand from experience how important those traditions can be in the eyes of our children. As a child, reaching the month of December was very exciting; it was the end of another year and the best holiday of all: Christmas. It was a month filled with anticipation and expectations. Hoping the items I put on my Christmas wish list would come true. It was so much fun to shop for gifts and share in the joy of the season with those I love. School plays, church gathering, holiday recitals, and lots of outdoor fun. With the chaotic days of December we’ve brought you some great content in this month’s issue. With great reads like Healthy Wealthy & Wise, Use Music to Stay in Harmony this Holiday Season, Making Holiday Magic, and Christmas Tree Safety are articles to help you get through this busy time of year. We hope we have saved you some time by bringing you a list of the ‘Hottest Toys’ for this holiday season. To this day, Christmas is still one of my favorite holidays for many reasons. Our staff wishes all of you a wonderful and magical holiday. A special thank you to all of our advertisers and to you, our loyal readers. It is has been our pleasure to be of service to you for six years. Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy season of refreshingly fun traditions, and fresh beginnings as we start the New Year!

About Investing in Kids (INK) INK is a charitable foundation that unites the community in an effort to best serve the students and teachers within the St. Johns County School District. INK provides professional development for teachers, mentoring and scholarship opportunities for need based students, free classroom supplies for teachers and successful preschool intervention to prepare children for kindergarten.

About the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF)

Investing in Kids (INK) Awarded Grant for Motorola STEM Solutions Project Two hundred students at Gamble Rogers Middle School will have the opportunity to learn and apply STEM skills beyond the classroom through an Innovation Generation grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions Inc. The Motorola Solutions Foundation provided $50,000 for a fourth year to challenge Florida’s district-wide local education foundations to inspire students through projects designed to help them solve real-world problems in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) areas this school year through a grant to the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF). INK’s project was one of nine chosen from among 28 applicants to receive $5,000 through a competitive judging process with each application being reviewed and scored by a panel of STEM industry professionals through the CFEF. In partnership with Carlisle Interconnect Technologies, the mission of Connecting Kids to STEM with Robotics is to introduce and engage students in STEM via hands-on work with robotics. While not only relevant for the manufacturing industry, robotics experience also fosters problem-solving collaborative projects igniting interest in students of all ages as they prepare for the world of work. Students working with design challenges often discover important connections for the application of math and science to real world problems making these fields more attractive as a potential career path. The “problem challenges,” which shape the activities, foster the use of various types of technology within these powerful kits. From the lithium power packs, to the design of the various parts and sensors that can be assembled, students design and problem solve just like real-world engineers, all while having fun. Furthermore, the students will have an opportunity to learn from industry professionals who can provide their expertise and experiences while guiding the students with robotics. “In 2007, the Motorola Solutions Foundation created the “Innovation Generation Grant” program to support instruction and educational experiences that spark young imaginations and turn their dreams into the innovations that will shape our future. Organizations like INK are teaching tomorrow’s workforce that careers in engineering and technology are not only fun, but also within their reach,” said Matt Blakely, director, Motorola Solutions Foundation.

CFEF is the membership organization for Florida’s local education foundations aligned with the state’s 67 county-wide school districts. Established in 1987, CFEF seeks to advance student achievement in Florida by increasing private-sector investment and involvement in public education. CFEF now has 59 member foundations with 1,100 business and community leaders serving as volunteer board members. Collectively, they raise more than $50 million annually to support students, teachers and schools through a variety of programs. CFEF has provided more than $25 million to local education foundations since 2002 through various private and public sector partnerships, including the State of Florida School District Education Foundation Matching Grant Program.

About the Motorola Solutions Foundation The Motorola Solutions Foundation is the charitable and philanthropic arm of Motorola Solutions. With employees located around the globe, Motorola Solutions seeks to benefit the communities where it operates. The company achieves this by making strategic grants, forging strong community partnerships and fostering innovation. The Motorola Solutions Foundation focuses its funding on public safety, disaster relief, employee programs and education, especially science, technology, engineering and math programming. Integral Math Academy Filling the Need for a Comprehensive Tutoring Program

Co-founders, Marina Jarova and Galina Stingel are pleased to announce that they have launched Integral Math Academy. Marina is a former Flagler County School employee and Galina a former high school math teacher at Volusia County. The company held their ribbon cutting and grand opening on Wednesday, October 21st. Integral Math Academy offers one-onone tutoring and small group classes for grades K-8, Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra II. They also offer prep classes for FSA, ECO, SAT, and Act tests. They have adopted a curriculum that is specially designed to focus on conceptual understanding and problem solving. Each lesson builds on the concepts introduced in previous lessons and preceding years. They emphasize development of logical and critical thinking over memorization. They also offer tutoring in reading comprehension (ELA), Physics and Russian language. “We saw a need in our community for a comprehensive math tutoring program,” says Marina. Upon meeting Galina, we realized that together we would be able to expand into a full time math academy,” she added. Having both witnessed first hand the difficulties with curriculums aimed to achieve results for standardized testing; the founders decided then, that their academy would focus on the application of the core 46 • December 2015 / www.stjohnsparent.com

The cofounders are inviting elementary and middle school students to join them for a free math class for grades 3 - Algebra on December 12th.
