t is said that the two most important purchases that you can make for your baby are their crib mattress and their car seat. A good crib mattress is crucial to development. Your car seat is critical for your child’s safety. Your checklist for car seats should include the following: the seat should be able to install both with latch as well as the safety belt, in cases where the seat may be in a car that does not have a latch, the seat is equipped with a tether strap for all forward facing seats, and the seat has side impact protection. Your baby/ child will need to be in a car seat from birth until they are 8 years old or 4 ft. 9 inches in height.

Healthy Resolutions
The irony of New Year’s Resolutions is that we start working out the hardest and eating the healthiest when we wear the most clothes. This goes on until around March or April right when it starts to get a little warmer and people start falling off the fitness wagon when they are starting to show more of their body. This is the worst time to fall off the wagon because when summer starts and they pull out their bathing suits and shorts and say, “Oh my. I look horrible in this. I need to lose weight and get tone!” So you might spend the summer doing that and right about the time fall weather hits, you are looking really good and now you start covering your body up again. How ironic. Human nature is to want a quick fix and to be Re-active instead of Pro-active. So what do we do and how do we have that swimsuit spectacular body? Let’s find out. As the trainer of Miss America and Miss USA Pageant contestants, I have had 18 swimsuit preliminary winners in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant since 1997. I even helped Miss America 2007, Lauren Nelson win the swimsuit round at Miss America that year. So listen up. I promise I know what can give you a swimsuit winning body. Some might say, “I am not a pageant girl. How does this apply to a normal person?” I think it is important to understand that many of my pageant girls made drastic improvements to look the way they look at Miss Oklahoma. My first swimsuit

winner started with me wearing a dress size 8 and had 24% body fat and I brought her down to 12% body fat and a dress size 2. This was about a 4-5 month process. Yes, it does take time but it is well worth it. New Years Resolutions are a great time to look good for the summer. The problem
is that many people quit before they give themselves a chance to really see what they are capable of. They think that if they have not lost all their weight in the first month or two then they have failed. It takes time to build a metabolism and many people make a lot of mistakes at first. So what are the major mistakes people make? The nutrition plan you are on must be a lifestyle. You must accept that in order for you to change your body and health, you must change your eating habits. The sacrifices you make to get the inches off must continue if you want to keep it off. The mistake people make is that they do a certain diet and lose weight and then when they plateau, they get frustrated and quit. Once they quit, their old habits kick back in and they gain the weight back. The other mentality is that people think
that they just “diet” until they lose their weight and then go back. You cannot do either of these things. It is perfectly normal for a person to plateau with their progress. This happens with weight loss and it happens with your muscle and tone gains as well. You must keep going and pushing forward. You will start to progress again. It might be at a snails pace but at least you are moving in the right direction. You are guaranteed to NOT progress and to digress instead if you quit. Once you lose the goal weight then you may back off a little on the intensity of the diet and cardiovascular exercise but you need to pay attention to how your body is reacting. If you see you are starting to put weight back on then ramp up the amount of cardiovascular exercise for a few days or weeks and tighten that diet up. I call that “mini-dieting.” You don’t have to go 12 weeks strict and then the rest of the year loose. You will gain back. You might go 12 weeks strict and then every so often go harder for 2 weeks to keep your body in check. Everyone is unique when it comes to what program, calorie range or time to accomplish their ideal swimsuit look but I am going to give you my Top 12 tips.
Top 12 Swimsuit Ready Tips 1. 2. 3. 4.
Schedule time for your workouts. If you don’t prioritize and plan your workouts then they probably won’t happen. You must schedule your days and times of day you are going to make it happen. Set Goals. Give yourself at least a week to accomplish your goals based on every pound or two that you need to lose. For example, if you need to lose 10 pounds then give yourself 10-20 weeks to do this. You might lose faster but this is a safe, realistic goal. Perform cardiovascular work 5-6 days per week. Cardiovascular/aerobic activity is a heart conditioning, fat burning workout. You need to perform a minimum of 30 minutes each time. You can start with walking but I think it is important to vary how you do cardio. If weight loss is your goal, cardio should take up a higher percentage of your workouts. AFTER: M iss N ebraska Lift weights. Perform a personalized weight training program at least 3 days a week. Everyone is for M iss USA different so don’t assume you can do your friends or something you saw in a magazine. Hire a professional to design it for you. Do not go more than 6 weeks without changing it up too. Your body will not continue to change if you don’t change the workout.

Perform your weights prior to your cardiovascular workout. This will allow you to feel stronger during the weight portion and you will dip into the fat cells sooner during cardio if you have already pre-depleted your body of carbohydrates from the weight training. The body starts burning more fat once the carbohydrates are depleted. Both types of exercise will benefit from this method. You should warm up with cardio for 5 minutes prior to the weights though. Don’t Starve. If you starve then you will only lose at first and you are setting yourself up for a rebound. Eat small meals often and remember to eat a minimum of 1200 calories for women and 1800 calories for men. You need to keep your nutrients up and these calorie minimums are essential. Notice I said minimum. Cut Sugar. Sugar is called an “empty calorie” because it is void of nutrients. Many people believe that if something is “fat free” then they can eat it. Soft drinks are fat free but I can guarantee you that if you drink a lot of them, you will gain body fat. One 200 calorie soda per day will add up to 73,000 calories per year. This is equivalent to over 20 pounds of fat! Watch your fat intake. One gram of fat contains 9 calories per gram. You DO need some fats but make sure they are in moderation and consist of healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, nut and fish oils. Many people think they either have to cut carbohydrates OR fat and I say you need to watch both. Eat lean proteins with every meal. Protein has only 4 calories per gram. You need to repair your muscle tissue from the workouts and protein is what does the repairing. A three ounce chicken breast might have 130-150 calories and is low in fat. You can choose from a variety of lean meats and when in a crunch, drink a whey protein instead. Don’t be afraid to add seasonings either. How you prepare the meal will help keep you excited about following the plan. Eat lots of Fibrous Veggies. Fiber is “indigestible food” by definition. This means you can’t store it as calories. Fibrous veggies, like most veggies contain lots of vitamins and nutrients yet don’t contribute to a lot of calories. That can fill you up and not fill you out! Drink water throughout the day. It is necessary for even our cells to repair everyday. It helps facilitate the removal of waist and toxins. Coffee and tea are fine, but they can dehydrate you. My rule for whether a person is hydrated properly is, “if your pee is clear, you are in the clear.” It is kind of crude but it works. Cheat on your diet. It is important to understand that changing your lifestyle of eating does not mean you don’t ever get to splurge. I think it is important to set aside one meal a week that you eat whatever you want. The physiological reason is that it keeps your body from getting use to lower calories. The psychological reason is that it gives you a reasonable goal to eat perfect during the week and reward yourself by having a splurge. It is also important for social reasons as well. Go ahead and cheat. However, I would not add the “cheat meals” in until after 3-4 weeks of dieting. You need to get some momentum first.

Oh Heel No!

here are numerous factors that go into finding that perfect outfit. For a woman, one of the most important aspects of a polished, stylish look is an outstanding pair of shoes. The most iconic and popular woman’s shoe on the market is undoubtedly the high heel. Did you know the best looking shoe could also be causing the most damage? OU Physicians Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Specialist Dr. Sheryl Smith says women are going to continue to wear high heels. Because of this, she advises they be smart about it. “Being a woman, I understand why women love shoes,” Dr. Smith says. “Just be smart. In the city, most of the women wear tennis shoes and put on heels when they get to work.” Dr. Smith attributes the majority of women’s foot pain directly to shoes. This can

be improved and somewhat prevented by changing shoes. “Most women aren’t going to change the shoes they wear, but we can treat conditions to make them more comfortable,” Dr. Smith said. “Wear comfortable shoes during the day and then when you’re going out Friday night, pull out the four-inch heels.” According to Dr. Smith, heel size can make
your feet because they elevate the entire foot and can be more comfortable. Dr. Smith says that even if women start to feel intermittent pain in their feet, they will typically wear flat shoes for a period of time and switch back to heels. Because of this, 70 to 80 percent are likely to experience foot issues at some point in their lives. Women who experience foot problems re-
a difference in footwear. She says that the higher up on the heel, the more pressure is placed on the joints at the front of the foot. These joints are smaller and are not meant to handle an excessive amount of body weight. Platform shoes are surprisingly better for

also occur. There are procedures available to alleviate these problems, but the women cannot wear high heels afterward. To combat foot problems, many women opt for flat shoes. While this seems like a quick fix, oftentimes it is not. The majority of the weight is then placed on the heel. Dr. Smith says some flats have no support in the arch and are no better than walking around barefoot. On the other hand, they don’t place pressure on the forefoot. Dr. Smith says it might be better for the long run to purchase the more expensive shoes. “One hundred percent leather shoes can conform to your foot,” she says. “If you’re going to buy a high heel, get the 100 percent leather heels so it forms to your foot.” In addition to spending a few more bucks on shoes, it might also be a good idea to grab some inserts. Dr. Smith says what makes you comfortable helps take some pressure off. Overall, the best option is to select a good, comfortable shoe with enough support to get you through the day. “I understand that women aren’t going to wear a half-inch pump,” Dr. Smith says. “It’s just important to think about how much you’re going to be walking. If you’re going out on the town and want to look cute, I understand. A lot of it is common sense.”

inkitzel cupcake café and candy boutique in Bricktown is the lavish dream of Oklahoma City mom Christa Jantz. Everything inside and out is a delicious feast for the taste buds and the eyes. Christa says she’s dreamed of a candy store since she was a small child. Pinkitzel is everything she dreamed of. Growing up in the gift and retail business, Christa is a natural designer. As a child, she had fun creating wild and funky outfits. Later on, she would become an interior designer. Her experience as an artist shows everywhere in Pinkitzel. At home, Christa enjoys dressing her family to the nines. All five of her children enjoy wearing fun outfits of mom’s invention. And why not, they have been wearing her designs since they were infants. Christa’s extravagant designs are an escape from the mundane. Walking into Pinkitzel is like stepping into a scene from “Alice and Wonderland,” but with a modern twist. “I always start with one little piece of fabric and the whole thing explodes,” Christa says. The taffy stage, chandeliers, Parisian style truffle and cupcake counters, and the giant pink horse are all the result of her creative genius. While you’re indulging your eyes on Pinkitzel’s décor, you can enjoy hundreds of different types of candy, taffy, and fine chocolates. Rows
and rows of colorful candies are set against a black and white background of displays magnified by the checkered floor. You can drink in the art created by her husband while you sip on specially blended teas, flavored milks, French press coffee, hot cocoa, and cream sodas. You might enjoy a fresh cherry cordial cupcake at a table for two or sitting under a fun tent. However, Pinkitzel is much more than sweets. It is also a unique gift boutique. Christa says they wanted the gifts to be priced reasonably. “We want that high end look, but we want everybody to come in here and take whatever they have to spend and make it special.” At Pinkitzel, special is always on the menu. Whenever you like, you can celebrate a special moment in one of their uniquely decorated party rooms. Each party can include invitations, party favors, popcorn and cotton candy machines, cupcakes, and milk served in old-fashioned glasses and bottles. At Pinkitzel, there is so much to tickle the senses, which is what kitzel means in Yiddish. Christa says, “We want everyone to come in and feel tickled pink.”

Top Tips For Tip-Top Skin
Make sure you use a good, broad spectrum sunscreen and one that screens for UVA. UVA rays are the bad wrinkle and brown spot rays and are prevalent in the winter as well as early morning and late evening. Choose a sunscreen with avobenzone or titanium and zinc dioxide and wear it every day.
retin-a Retinoic acid is a vitamin A derivative that does wonderful things for the skin. It thickens the healthy collagen in the skin and increases its blood supply as well as evening out uneven pigment and decreasing the dead dry layer.
fish oils, vitamin c These promote healthy skin and are definitely worth adding to your diet.
don’t glycate When we eat high concentrations of sugar, we initiate a metabolic process called glycation. This is hard on the collagen fibers and takes a toll on the body as a whole. To avoid it, never eat high concentrations of sugar that are unopposed with protein.
water Water is essential for the functioning of ALL cells and the skin cells are especially vulnerable because of the fast rate at which they grow. Drink lots of fresh water each day.
exercise Increasing your heart rate increases the blood flow to the skin. This helps in growth of new skin cells and in carrying away the waste products of cell metabolism.
antioxidants Both topical and oral antioxidants play a role in pretty skin. Topical products have, of late, been shown to improve skin function and appearance. Vitamin C, E, Pomegranate, green tea, and coffeeberry are a few of the better topical antioxidants.
growth factors These hinder the aging process by growing new skin more rapidly. Extracted from cultured epidermal cells, placental cells, colostrum, and even plants, growth factors are compounds that act as chemical messengers between cells, turning on and off a variety of cellular activities. Growth factors increase the rate at which cells in the body grow. They play a role in cell division, new cell and blood vessel growth, and collagen and elastin production and distribution.
exfoliate Dr. Lori Hansen 13313 N. Meridian Suite A-3 Oklahoma City, OK 73120 www.LoriHansenMD.com 405-753-9600

College applications
What Matters the Most? When it comes to applying to colleges, there are several things that matter most with college admission offices.
3 3
ACT/SAT score – start taking required tests early for practice and to alleviate pressure. College entrance essay – Lockhart says she enjoys reading students’ essays to see what they have been involved in and to see their writing style.
3
Grade point average – GPA is an important thing throughout your child’s schooling. The most critical time for a stellar GPA is in the high school years.
3
Letter of recommendation from high school counselor – it is important that students get to know their counselors and spend time talking to them about career goals. Counselors can be an important resource for college officials if a student should miss an abundance of school due to extenuating circumstances.

It’s
never too early to start thinking about higher education for your child. Preparation for college is starting sooner now than ever before. Important things to keep in mind are to help your child maintain good grades early and encourage them to spend time doing what they enjoy, which could eventually determine where they will go to college. According to Michelle Lockhart, Oklahoma City University Senior Director of Admissions, the pivotal year for college preparation is junior year in high school. Freshman year might be too early, she admits, but by the time students are sophomores, they should visit local college campuses to get a feel for things and to pinpoint what their interests are. In the early stages, it’s more about learning about the college experience rather than choosing specific majors and programs. Lockhart says campus visits are how most students determine their fit. Whether the college is in-state or out-of-state, she thinks it is important to spend at least one day on a college campus to see if it’s a good fit or not. “There are a lot of perceptions and stereotypes out there,” Lockhart explains. “So it’s good to really dig in and see if it’s a place where [your child would] be comfortable.” After visiting colleges throughout sophomore year, by junior year it is important to take the ACT or SAT. By senior year, she advises high school stu-
dents to apply to colleges they are interested in by the holidays. Schools such as OCU accept applications through the spring semester, but getting in applications earlier always helps with financial aid, scholarships and loan processing. While visiting college campuses and taking necessary tests are important, the pathway to college is based on grades. Lockhart says grades start counting as soon as students enter high school. She says at OCU they often get transcripts dating back to kindergarten, but the university only calculates high school grade point averages. In addition to grade point averages and test scores, Lockhart says her university looks for students who are well-rounded in terms of what organizations they have been involved in and personal accomplishments. Being involved at the high school level, whether it is within the school or an organization in the community, is important. Once your child pinpoints a group of colleges they wish to attend, price tags should not scare them off. To help combat college costs, Lockhart stresses the importance of looking for both internal and external scholarships. She says to explore all options before narrowing down the list. When the college is selected, the application has been accepted and the move is official, high school seniors need to stay focused in class. Oftentimes seniors suffer from “senioritis” and slack on schoolwork in their final semesters. This can only hurt grade point averages. After your high school student becomes your college student, encourage them to pursue what they enjoy. Lockhart says the national average college-level student changes their major four times. If that’s the case, keep motivating them to reach the ultimate goal – obtaining their degree.

Keystone Adventure School and Farm: A Unique Way of Learning S
ince 2005, three educators along with their team at Keystone Adventure School and Farm have been paving the way for innovative learning in the state of Oklahoma. Tired with the old way of learning, these teachers embrace the fact that every child learns differently and apply that to everyday lessons. As co-founder and co-director Jenny Dunning puts it, children need unstructured time for unstructured thinking. Dunning, who also instructs art classes at Keystone, has been teaching for around 35 years at various institutions. She says what interested her about the profession is her fascination of how the mind works and on top of that, how all the components come together to facilitate learning. “What I was interested in at the beginning was not just cognitive or academic framework,” Dunning explains, “But the entire holistic approach to enhancing the mind, enhancing the spirit, enhancing the body and how that impacts knowledge.” At Keystone, teachers try to identify what

kind of learner each child is and try to create a pathway so that each child can become a director of his or her own learning, Dunning says. Keystone focuses more on critical thinking components than tests. “We hope in that process the children take with them a lifelong love of learning,” she said. While testing is not their focus, fourth and fifth graders are trained to take tests to prepare them for the next level of learning at other learning institutions. “Students are taught time management and are focused on things that are practical, life application skills,” Dunning said. “When kids go into another program, those things are facilitated into their daily lives and they are ready for college.” According to Dunning, what the facility is experiencing is children coming back to them each day with a structured, enthusiastic way of learning. “We believe this kind of foundation is even more important for successful college experience and life experience.”

any women who are pregnant and experiencing headaches, neck and back pain may be looking for relief and a way to avoid using pain medications. Drugs and surgery are absolutely needed at times, but when pregnant, serious consideration is needed for the safety of both mom and baby. For those who are seeking a natural and effective way of treating a spinal condition, chiropractic care may be right for you. As a chiropractor/ acupuncturist serving the Oklahoma City area, I have had the honor of treating numerous expecting moms with great results. Pregnant bodies need a flexible and balanced spine, hips, and pelvis; internal organs need to be free of postural stress, as well as, nerve stress. During pregnancy, may physiological changes occur within the body as it prepares for the growth and delivery of the baby. Such changes with the growth of the abdomen can include pelvic changes, increased curvature of the back, swelling, and inflammation of the joints. With these changes, a misalign-

Misaligned joints of the body along with the increasing weight of the growing baby can put a tremendous amount of pressure on the spine and organs. It has been observed that 50-70% of pregnant women suffer from lower back pain. It is also highly common for pregnant moms to experience headaches, neck pain, and shoulder tension. When it comes to chiropractic care for pregnant moms, there are no adverse effects, unlike those which come along with many medications. The benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include: a healthier pregnancy and baby, help in the control of nausea symptoms, an easier and safer delivery, and relief of back and neck pain. An adjustment can highly reduce spinal nerve stress, promote healing throughout the body, and increase proper positioning for the delivery. It is also important to remember to continue your chiropractic
care regularly after childbirth to ensure good health for yourself as a busy mom and for your growing child. It is important during pregnancy to seek out options that support your body ’s natural abilities to function and heal. Chiropractic care will help ensure that all the body ’s systems are functioning to there best capacity which will promote a easier pregnancy, a safer delivery, and a healthy newborn. Along with a better diet, exercise, and avoiding drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, chiropractic care should be an essential part of a pregnant woman’s healthcare regimen.

Healthy Pregnancy 101 10 Tips for Keeping You and Your Baby Well by Dr. Joseph King
If you’re expecting, or planning on trying to have a baby, you may already be thinking about which color to paint the nursery, or how to arrange the crib and other furniture. But before you do any decorating, you must first put your personal “house” in order. This means taking care of yourself, and it’s as important in the first trimester of your pregnancy as it is during the third. Mercy obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Joseph King, who sees patients at the Mercy clinic at 820 W. 15th Street in Edmond, says there are many things a woman can do to make the most of her pregnancy. Here’s a list of 10 of them:
See your doctor for a checkup. Get your pregnancy off to a good start by visiting your doctor. This is the time to discuss nutrition requirements, exercise, immunizations, and any other questions or concerns you have. Do not take over-the-counter medications or herbal remedies without first consulting your obstetrician. Some of these medications, even commonly used ones, may increase the risk of miscarriage, especially when used for more than a week. But there’s also another reason. “Many of the medications and supplements available over-the-counter and through health food stores are not recommended by the FDA,” says Dr. King. “Remember, too, that every health food store is not necessarily as knowledgeable as the next. This is why it is important to talk to your doctor.”
Get plenty of sleep. Eight hours of sleep each night is a minimum, and you should certainly sleep more if you feel tired. If you’re unable to sleep through the night, taking naps can help you get the rest you need. Not only will sufficient sleep help you feel great during your pregnancy, but it will also help keep your immune system strong. Avoid
smoking. Smoking is known to damage every organ in the human body and it is especially harmful to unborn babies, whose bodies are still developing. So this means that not only should you avoid smoking yourself, but you should also avoid those areas where others are smoking, as secondhand smoke is just as harmful. This one tip will go a long way in helping you feel better during your pregnancy.
Avoid
alcohol. One of the most common causes of mental and physical birth defects, alcohol can cause severe abnormalities in a developing fetus. And since no one really knows what constitutes a safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, it is best to avoid it.
Drink plenty of fluids. Unlike alcohol, which dehydrates your body, water, juices and other fluids provide you with the hydration you need. A woman’s blood volume increases substantially during pregnancy, and drinking eight to ten glasses of water each day can help prevent dehydration and constipation. www. brag BOOK Magazine.com
59
Take
a prenatal vitamin. Though you should avoid over-the-counter medicines and supplements unless approved by your doctor, prenatal vitamins are important both before and during your pregnancy. Your nutritional requirements change during pregnancy and prenatal vitamins help ensure you’re getting enough essential nutrients, including folic acid, calcium and iron. “Women of childbearing age should get at least one milligram of folic acid each day,” says Dr. King. Ask your doctor to recommend a prenatal vitamin that is right for you.
Exercise. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic activity each week if you’re not already highly active. If you are, check with your doctor before continuing your exercise routine. In any case, regular physical activity will help keep your body and immune system strong, while also reducing stress. Wear
comfortable shoes and elevate your feet several times each day. “There is more swelling of the extremities the farther along you get in your pregnancy,” says Dr. King. “Elevating your feet helps reduce this swelling.”
Eat
a well-balanced diet. Eating healthy is always important, but especially so once you’re pregnant. Now that you’re eating for you and your baby, it is important to watch not only what you’re eating, but how much. The amount of food a woman needs during pregnancy depends on a number of things including her body mass index (BMI) before pregnancy, the rate of weight gain, age and appetite. In general, pregnant women need between 2,200 and 2,900 calories a day. A gradual increase in calories as the baby grows is the best bet:
The
first trimester does not require any extra calories.
The second trimester requires an additional 347 calories each day. The third trimester requires 452 additional calories per day. In addition to lean meats and whole grains, make sure to eat plenty of fruit and leafy green vegetables. Eating a nutritious diet is one of the best things you can do for you and your baby.

Ear Infections More Common Than You Think… Kandace Dodson
Ear infections are a common case in
infants. In fact, Dr. Richard Orgill of Deaconess ENT Clinic says most kids will experience an ear infection before they turn two. Dr. Orgill practices otolaryngology – more commonly known as ear, nose and throat, or ENT. He says ear infections are caused by the Eustachian tube, which runs from the ear to the back of the nose. In babies, the tube is kinked a bit because their heads are bigger than their faces. Until their face catches up with the rest of the head around ages two or three, the Eustachian tube does not work well and leads to fluid in the middle ear. “They are prone to collecting fluid in the middle ear,” Dr. Orgill says. “Bacteria love fluid that is just sitting there, which can cause infections.” These infections can cause scarring on the eardrum and negatively impact hearing. Infections can also stiffen the eardrum hampering its ability to transmit sound that can affect speech, which is why it is imperative to assess early. Once an ear infection happens, it can become a recurring pattern. The first treatment is typically antibiotics. If ear infections persist or if multiple antibiotics do not cure the infection, it might be time to consider tubes. Dr. Orgill says to start thinking about tubes when kids get six ear infections in a year or if they’re on track to get six infections in a year. Panicked parents should know that the procedure for placing tubes in the child’s ears is one of the most commonly practiced surgeries in the world, Dr. Orgill says. “Most of the kids I see for ear infections need to get tubes because they’ve failed all the medical

therapy and management.” The tubes help bypass the Eustachian tube, allowing fluid that would otherwise build up, escape the ear. The tubes act as a vent and let air in that is supposed to come through but the Eustachian tube is preventing. Tubes are usually inserted at a young age and generally last about a year in the eardrum. After that amount of time, the eardrum spits the tubes out. If the eardrum does not eject the tubes, they are manually taken out at around three years. However, 90 to 95 percent of tubes come out in one year on their own. Dr. Orgill says that the majority of the children with tubes outgrow any problems after the tubes come out. At that time, the Eustachian tube has started to work properly and they do not require another set of tubes. If problems persist, Dr. Orgill says the correct procedure to take is removing the adenoids, which is positioned at the back of the nose and sits next to the Eustachian tube. The major adverse reaction to ear infections is speech problems. Dr. Orgill says the best solution for speech problems is to
see a speech therapist at an early age. “If you wait until the child is five to eight years old, sometimes it is hard to get back,” he says. “Speech is developing during those early years and if it doesn’t develop, you’re kind of behind in the rest of your education trying to catch up and it’s hard.” Infections can be caused by a plethora of things ranging from age to environments to family history. Dr. Orgill says children are most prone from eight months old to three years old. Daycares can also be a big issue, he says. The risk factor is higher for children in a daycare if they are around five or more kids, which increases the exposure rate. Tobacco smoke also increases the risk for infections. In addition to environments, seasons can slightly increase the child’s risk for an infection because there are more upper respiratory infections that can lead to problems in the ears. To combat ear infections, adhere to any other upper respiratory preventative practices. Make sure children are washing their hands and keeping toys clean. Breastfeeding can also decrease the chance of an infection. “There are antibodies
”
in the breast milk that are passed to the infant and they get some immunity to infections that way,” Dr. Orgill said. In addition to ear infections, Dr. Orgill says young mothers need to be aware of tonsil problems. “Tonsils and adenoids can be problematic if they get too big for your child’s throat,” he says. If they are too big for your child’s throat, this could cause sleeping problems. Kids will toss and turn because their tonsils block their breathing and their brains have to wake them up to pull their tonsils about so they can breathe. “Usually this presents as snoring during sleep and/ or always having a stuffy, congested nose.” The most important thing is to keep your child healthy. Make sure to maintain your home as a clean, safe environment for your child. If an infection does occur, assess the problem quickly and early.

With more than 31 years in the juvenile industry, Doug and Joellen Tritton along with their daughter Anne McGaha run 3 StorkLand locations totaling more than 35,000 square feet in Texas and Oklahoma. The Tritons’ attribute faith, family, and staff to their success. StorkLand got its start in the late 1970’s. Doug and Joellen decided to open a children’s store when they were frustrated with the limited crib selection they found in their area. At this time Anne was about 9 month old. At the suggestion of a friend they decided to take business into their own hands. The first store in Wichita Falls started off as a small boutique but then expanded to 10,000 and then 14,000 square feet. The success of the Wichita Falls location lead to expansion with a store in Tyler, TX and then in OKC, OK. Doug commutes to OKC every weekend and to Tyler about every other month. With Stork Land’s strong history firmly rooted in the past they now focus on moving the stores into the future with social media. In the Oklahoma City store StorkLand features complete nursery design with cribs, furniture, bedding, and accessories. StorkLand also carries a complete line of baby gear including car seats, strollers, joggers, pack n plays, and high chairs. Except diapers and food StorkLand can supply your every baby need. The store was established originally because there was only a choice of one style crib in either brown or white with no bedding. Since that time the Triton’s have seen such limited crib offering grow into numerous options in creating your special nursery. Most of the cribs StorkLand offers today are convertible cribs that transform to both toddler and full size beds. No longer is a nursery purchase limited for just a few years but now grows into a complete room with dressers, armoires, nightstands and chests. Over the past few years, StorkLand has seen a huge influence of adult furniture designs incorporated into nursery furniture. Years ago no one would have ever thought about using a black crib and now our finish selections lends itself to Black, Espresso, Chocolate, Walnut, Cinnamon, Chestnut, and Cherry to mention just a few of the most popular. eople choose to use cloth diapers for many reasons. Some of the more common reasons are to save money, to reduce waste, to reduce the amount of chemicals that come into contact with baby’s skin, and to use something more comfortable and cuter on baby’s bottom. It is estimated that most people will spend an average of $2,500 per child on disposable diapers from birth to potty training. Most people spend around $400 to cloth diaper one child, and the same diaper can be used for multiple children, so the cost savings is significant. The most economical way to cloth diaper can cost as little as $150. People who want to use more expensive brands or have more diapers for each child might spend as much as $700. No matter which cloth diapers are selected, it is still significantly less than using disposable diapers. Some people choose to cloth diaper to decrease their environmental footprint. No one knows exactly how long a disposable diaper
takes to decompose, but it is estimated that it would take each disposable diaper 250-500 years to decompose. In the US alone, there are more than 20 billion disposable diapers dumped in landfills each year. And each child, from birth to two and a half years, uses approximately 6,500 diapers. This is compared to 24-36 cloth diapers that a child would need from birth to potty training. Parents are becoming increasingly aware of what is coming into contact with their children’s skin. Cloth diapers are often made from natural fibers such as organic cotton, hemp and bamboo. Some have micro fleece as a stay-dry option. Disposable diapers are made from paper and plastic and contain Tributyl-tin (TBT) which is toxic
week. But, without the extra loads of clothing and bedding to wash, the diaper laundry is not overwhelming. With today’s modern cloth diaper also come a variety of items to make cloth diapering easy. The most notable is the diaper sprayer or flushable diaper liners that makes the removal of waste as easy as flushing the toilet. There are adorable “wetbags” to store the used diapers in and a variety of diaper rash creams that are good for baby and safe for cloth diapers. The Changing Table offers complementary Cloth Diaper Crash Courses to teach all about cloth diapers, what choices are available and how to care for them. and can cause hormonal problems. Disposable diapers also contain sodium polyacrylate, a super absorbent polymer (SAP). A similar substance was banned from use in feminine hygiene products because it increased the risk of toxic shock syndrome. This has not been banned from use in disposable diapers. In babies with sensitivities to chemicals, cloth diapers can reduce diaper rash. And, cloth diapered babies tend to potty train earlier than babies who wear disposables. Additionally, the cloth diapers of today are cute. They come in a rainbow of colors and prints and come with the options to fasten with Velcro or snaps. They are as simple to put on and use as disposable diapers. Additionally, if you have the right cloth diaper for your baby, the elastic at the waist and legs helps prevent leaks and “blow outs” are almost unheard of. This means less clothing and bedding to wash. Most people wash diapers two or three times a

Doulas

Kandace Dodson
E
xpectant families may not realize how many questions they will have regarding their baby. Each family needs to have a person that knows their situation and how they want to proceed with the birth and afterward. A doula could be just the person that families need during this pivotal time. Doulas are women trained and experienced in childbirth that provide continuous physical, emotional and educational support to families through the end of pregnancy, labor, birth and after the postpartum period. Although they are scarce in Oklahoma, doulas are an excellent source for any expectant family. Doulas can provide unprecedented, personal support to families from the moment they find out a child is on the way to after the pregnancy. Doulas provide emotional support, physical comfort measures and endless information so families can make the
best decision throughout their journey. Certified Doula, Christine Cleary, says doulas could be classified as tour guides for expectant mothers and families going through one of life’s most frightening, exciting and exhilarating things. She says doulas are present to add a personal touch to the experience that the primary care provider might be unable to provide. Oftentimes people confuse doulas with midwives. Unlike midwives, doulas do not conduct clinical tasks. Although, when a midwife and doula are present, Cleary says the roles melt together beautifully. Certified Doula, Taryn Goodwin, agrees saying that the midwifery model of care includes practices that support birth as a normal process. Doulas’ means of support include guided meditation, breathing exercises in labor and position changes while birthing. What sets
www. www.brag bragBOOK BOOK Magazine.com Magazine.com
doulas apart is that midwives, nurses and doctors usually do not have the time to focus on the individual needs of the patient. “Even the best members of your labor and delivery team are trained to monitor the health of you and your baby, not so much your physical and emotional needs,” Goodwin said. “A doula still adds the comfort of touch. We also work with women in the prenatal period to find out what their goals are for childbirth. If a woman has a certain fear or concern, we work through that together and find out how we can provide optimum support.” Families might be concerned that a doula would replace the father or partner’s role at the birth. This is not true. Doulas do not replace the partner any more than the nurses, midwives and doctors do. There is a lot going on during childbirth, and not just for the laboring mother. It is often forgotten that fathers and partners are going through this labor, too. While not physically, they are emotionally invested. A few childbirth classes are hardly enough time to learn what a doula spends months and years learning how to do. Doulas can remove that pressure by allowing the father or partner to do what they do best – love their partner. “There is a stigma with some in the medical community that believe we are there to talk a mom out of her choice to get an epidural or her choice to go on with medical procedures,” Goodwin explains. “Through DONA, our certifying body, we are saying to the provider this
79 79
is our standard of practice; we’re not there to step on anybody’s toes. We are not there to make decisions for the mother or do any clinical tasks. We want to work as a team to help the mother have a safe and satisfying birth as she defines it.” The bottom line for doulas is to support the mother’s choices for how she wants her birthing experience to be. “We are dealing with whatever the mom wants,” Goodwin says. “Some doulas might want to encourage a mom to have a natural birth, for instance. Our job is to support her choices and let her know what her choices are so she can choose what’s best for her. We can help them understand the benefits along with the risks.” Doulas can even be present for moms opting for caesarean sections. “I have been with many planned caesareans,” Cleary said. “I spend eight to 10 hours at every planned
April Daigle Photography
caesarean I’ve had. [Caesareans] change our role a lot. We’re not doing position changes but we’re helping them as they’re getting ready for surgery. We help keep their fears at bay.” Currently, there are only 58 doulas in Oklahoma and only around half of those are certified. Being a certified doula is important
because it means belonging to a code of ethics and standards of practice to go by. Cleary says being a certified doula results in camaraderie with other certified doulas knowing they share the same set of ethical standards. Cleary and Goodwin are certified through DONA. Both Cleary and Goodwin agree that hav-
ing more certified doulas in the state would be exceptional. The process to become a doula can take up to two years. There is an abundance of required reading, a certain amount of births along with positive, validated evaluations from healthcare providers. The cost of doulas ranges. Some work under a volunteer umbrella, while others make up to $900 per client. Each doula is individually employed and can charge what they choose. The average experienced doula falls between $400 to $750. Due to recent healthcare changes, there is now a billing code created so that those utilizing doulas can bill for third party reimbursement through insurance companies. Certified doulas with any organization can file for a provider number. “Our clients are able to file for third party reimbursement and we can help them do that and get reimbursement,” Goodwin says. “It’s not easy; sometimes it takes filing more than once, but it can be done.” Through the changes in healthcare and more education for expectant mothers, the demand for doulas could rise. In addition to being there and helping moms through the birth, doulas can help the family with getting breastfeeding established and tasks such as taking pictures and inform them of procedures they might not understand. The bottom line: doulas are providing a loyal service to the expectant mother and family in order to provide an enjoyable, memorable experience. “We can also remind dad to get skin-onskin contact with the baby immediately following birth, which is so important if mom is having surgery,” Goodwin says. “Sometimes they whisk the baby off to the nursery and these moms don’t know they have choices. They don’t speak up because no one tells them and they assume things have to be a certain way.”

What if there was a way to curb postpartum issues such as depression and fatigue, while increasing your milk supply? Placenta encapsulation or Placentophagy could be the best solution for you. Brag Book talked to Taryn Goodwin, a placenta encapsulation provider, to find out more about the process and how it can benefit new mothers. Using a process in accordance with traditional Chinese medicine, Goodwin puts the placenta into capsule form. She uses a light steaming process, dehydrates the placenta and then grinds it into capsules. The capsule ends up looking no different than any prenatal vitamin. Each placenta can yield anywhere from 75 to more than 200 capsules, which will last mothers for the initial healing period, plus any hormonal instances such as weaning, return of menstrual cycle or menopause. The capsules are extremely rich in nutrients and hormones. Goodwin says no two placentas are alike and it is the only medicine your body creates uniquely for you. Your placenta is specific to your needs, which may help mothers to avoid such things as weepiness, fatigue, stress and lactation after giving birth. Placentas have high levels of B6 and corticotropinreleasing hormone (CRH). B6 has been shown to curb postpartum depression, while CRH is a stress reducer and is generally produced by the hypothalamus. During the last trimester of pregnancy, the placenta secretes three times as much CRH levels into the bloodstream. It was discovered that postpartum women have lower levels of CRH, triggering depressive symptoms. The National Institute of Health concluded that the placenta secreted so much CRH that the hypothalamus stopped producing it. Once the placenta was born, it
took some time for the hypothalamus to get the signal that the CRH levels were low and to begin producing it again. This is just another sign that there is likely a biological cause for the “baby blues,” directly related to hormone levels. By ingesting the placenta, we believe we are helping restore the levels of CRH. “This is something we’ve culturally accepted as a role of motherhood,” Goodwin says. “We don’t think of it as anything abnormal and we don’t tell our doctors about it unless it turns into a more serious form of postpartum depression.” Moms who are encapsulating placentas are fighting against this commonality. If we’re giving our body back what it intended for us to have, we can avoid things such as weepiness, fatigue as well as the stress and improve lactation.
In addition, Goodwin says the placenta is a Lactagagon, which has been shown to increase milk supply. In the majority of cases, mothers experience an increase in their milk supply within a matter of days. “I think all moms want to have an abundant milk supply when they breast feed,” Goodwin says. “And they want to be happy and full of energy so they can fully enjoy their baby and their postpartum experience.” Currently, there are many parts of the world consuming placentas. Goodwin encourages mothers to put aside the cultural taboo of encapsulating placentas and to give it a shot because you can’t get back that period in your life. She thinks encapsulating placentas are rising in popularity because “we’ve evolved to be more health conscious and are more aware of our options.
“I always tell moms that are grossed out by it to please save the placenta because you’ve never been four days postpartum with this baby,” Goodwin explains. “You might have three kids at home, but each baby and each experience is different, and there are so many factors and variables. Save the placenta so you know that you have it in case you need it.” Placenta encapsulation costs $200 for doula clients and $250 for non-clients. Goodwin says that if cost is an issue, she will work something out with potential clients. This is a service she wants available to anyone who wants it regardless of financial situation. The process is a two-day procedure and takes two trips. Depending on where clients are located, there could be travel costs.

The Patient Experience by Lauren Downs
“
A careful clinical examination provides much more information than anything else.

Women’s Health Center of Edmond

105 S. Bryant, St. 104 Edmond, OK 73034 405-341-1557
If you have ever waited for a doctor’s appointment for what felt like an eternity, or ever had an unhelpful consultation with a doctor, you know these are not experiences you want repeated, especially during a visit to your OBGYN. You should have high expectations for your patient experience, from your time spent in the waiting room, to talking to your doctor, to contact in between visits. Your body, your money, and your time are worth the trouble finding a doctor that meets all of your expectations. A gynecologist in Oklahoma City, Dr. James Buchinger knows what women should expect from an OBGYN and all aspects of their patient experience. Dr. Buchinger suggests a positive patient experience begins as soon as you step inside your doctor’s office. It should be clean and comfortable and the staff should treat you nicely. Consider how long you have to wait before your appointment begins. The amount of time you wait for your doctor is not a measure of their expertise or value. Remember, your time is important. Once the wait is over, your OBGYN should perform a careful examination. Dr. Buchinger says, “A careful clinical examination provides much more information than anything else.” Therefore, communication is key. If your OBGYN explains properly, uses teaching aids, and asks for your views, you will understand the information in the best possible way that you can. Also, your doctor should ask thorough questions about your medical problems and concerns, discuss all decisions regarding your care, and offer you alternatives. Dr. Buchinger says to ask yourself, “Does he treat me as an intelligent person who can understand and encourage me to participate in the decision making process?” If your OBGYN suggests running a medical test, for example, he or she should first explain why you need the test, and then fully explain the results. When selecting an OBGYN, it is also important to plan for a positive patient experience in between visits. You may want a doctor that is available on weekends or after office hours. Ask him or her if they are available for emergencies. Do they have a partner who shares the responsibilities? The answers to these questions could be especially valuable to you in the event of an emergency or pregnancy. Remember, it’s your body, your money, and your time. Consider all aspects of the patient experience and choose a doctor that will live up to your expectations.

Photography
&
Philanthropy Lauren Downs
Your life will be captured in a real way, and real people will receive real help. That’s the promise of Oklahoma City photographer Jay Pack. Jay has no formal training, just a passion and talent for photography that captures life and people in real moments. Now, through charities and his own photography, he uses his passion to give back to people in need around the globe. But, Jay was not always a photographer. In fact, his current career is in radiology. It wasn’t until his first daughter was born a few years ago that he began taking pictures as a hobby. “I was just doing it for fun,” Jay says. He posted the photos he took of his children on Facebook. People took notice and they wanted him to take portraits of their own children. They offered to pay, but Jay did not need or want compensation for his creative outlet. It wasn’t long before his hobby evolved into something greater. “It finally occurred to me that I could take the money they were offering me and then just donate it to charity. So that’s when it really exploded,” Jay says. Now, anyone can book a session at his photography website, jataylorphotography.com. An artis-
tic fee of $200 gets you a telephone consultation, two to three hours of time in front of the camera, unlimited number of people in your pictures, and twenty to forty proofs. When all is said and done, each photo session changes someone’s life. Jay says, “100% of your money goes to the charity of your choice. “ He is not looking to gain a career, fame, or fortune as a photographer. Jay desires only to make a difference with his art and capture true moments in the lives of families in the metro. Much like the images Jay creates as a radiologist, his photos reveal what we may not envision on our own. Jay ’s photographs can evoke the sincere elation of a child at play, the unique unity of a family, a toddler ’s adoration for her older sister, or the pensive profile of a child deep in thought and wonder. Jay says, “I try not to go with that everyday smile. I want it to be something more than that.” And everyday Jay does something more, whether he is hand developing his film, or diagnosing a problem in his doctor ’s office. As he quotes on his website, “It is better to give than to receive.”

In-home Safety Childproofing your home allows your new explorer to move through their environment with fewer restrictions. The proper placement of quality safety products allows you peace of mind and your child freedom to try out their new legs, not to mention independence. The reality is parents can’t be at their child’s side every minute of the day. Childproofing your home, while not a substitute for adult supervision, adds an extra layer of protection.
101
As your child grows, your childproofing needs may change. With newborns, you may not need outlet covers. When that same infant begins to crawl, that same electrical outlet can be a serious hazard. When your crawler becomes a walker and climber, safety gates, furniture anchors and door locks will be key to your home safety. A detailed childproofing evaluation performed in your home is a simple way to ensure your family is safe. Some of our products include: Cabinet Locks and Latches, Gates with Custom Mounting Kits, Furniture Anchoring, Door Locks, Window Safety, Bathroom Safety, plus many other safety options. Custom Gates “One common question from families is how many gates do I need for a staircase?” said Lindsey Gillispie, child safety specialist and cofounder of Oklahoma Childproofers. “The answer is simple: You need two gates for a staircase. One at the bottom and one at the top, but never use a pressure mount gate at the top of your stairs.”
Lindsey Gillispie also notes that a challenge that parents face is they want a decorator look to their home while keeping it safe with childproofing. Oklahoma Childproofers helps parents keep their staircase looking great with our custom gate mounting kits. These kits attach to the banister, allowing our installers to drill into the mounting kit instead of a wood or iron banister. She noted that Steven Drozd, with The Flaming Lips has one of these gate mounting kits in his home. When Steven and Becky Drozd were asked what they liked about their gates Becky stated, “Everything! It has eliminated a lot of stress. Our daughter was obsessed with climbing the stairs. Now we can shut the gate and not worry about her getting on the stairs.” Steven added “the gate is terrific!”When the Drozd’s were asked why they called Oklahoma Childproofers they stated “Because of our daughter. She is totally different from our first child. She was into everything, and it was frightening.”
And, to answer the question we get asked most often: Yes, we are parents like you. Not only are we are professionals with extensive experience in creating a comprehensive plan that is customized to fit your needs, Oklahoma Childproofers know first-hand how you desire to keep your family safe. We are focused on meeting the growing need for child safety in Oklahoma, and we look forward to working with you to provide a safer environment for your new explorer. When considering a professional childproofer, Becky and Steven Drozd’s said “It’s totally worth it. It’s worth hiring a professional because we tried doing it ourselves and many of our locks failed or broke. We had our home childproofed a year ago (by Oklahoma Childproofers), and everything still works.” For more information or to schedule your inhome safety evaluation contact: Oklahoma Childproofers 405-625-6670 oklahomachildproofers.com

Chromosomal Differences
Kandace Dodson & Lauren Downs
Being a mother is a full-time job with many challenges. Being a mother to a child with special needs is a challenge on an entirely different level, especially if your child has a rare chromosome defect. Robyn Hanson says, just looking at her daughter, most people cannot tell anything is wrong, but one-year-old Ellery Hanson experiences the world in a different way than most children. Ellery has Phelan McDermid Syndrome (PMS) and a rare disorder called Intestinal Lymphangiectasia. She is one of only 450 cases of PMS worldwide and the only one in the world with both PMS and Intestinal Lymphangiectasia.
Ellery ’s intestinal disorder requires that she follow a strict, very low-fat, high-protein diet for the rest of her life. Hanson says her daughter ’s Intestinal Lymphangiectasia is the reason Ellery could not gain weight after she was born. Hanson says Ellery only weighed six pounds when she was seven weeks old. The Hanson’s were heart-broken, but realized it was nothing compared to the challenges their family would face with Phelan McDermid Syndrome. PMS is caused by a deletion of the tip of the twenty-second chromosome with lack of the SHANK3 gene. The SHANK3 gene plays a pivotal role in development of the human
nervous system, including the brain. Loss of this genetic component prevents proper nervous system construction during fetal development. Most children with the deletion exhibit moderate to severe developmental delays – physically and intellectually – “but especially in speaking and communicating,” Hanson says. Ellery is not yet speaking. Right now, the Hanson’s are trying to teach Ellery sign language to help her communicate. PMS can also make everyday tasks we take for granted like chewing, swallowing, and walking very difficult to learn and do. Ellery spent several weeks in therapy successfully learning how to chew and swallow, which were huge challenges for her. Even with those battles won, Hanson says Ellery still cannot feed herself and does not walk. If she cannot learn how to walk, Ellery ’s family has considered building a house that would be wheelchair accessible for her as she grows. “All of your decisions about things change,” Hanson says. “Your priorities change.” One of the Hanson’s priorities now is therapy for Ellery. “We do therapy all the time and when we aren’t doing that, we are at the doctor,” Hanson says. During the first year
of Ellery ’s life, the Hanson’s paid $10,000 out of pocket for her care. Now, they ’ve found helpful resources but are still finding it challenging to get all of the therapy Ellery needs, such as oral motor therapy. “When it costs $160 an hour, and you have a family of six, you know you can’t easily afford to pay that out of your pocket,” Hanson says. “That’s the hard thing for us.” Introduced by a close friend, Hanson found relief from her parental challenges in a local pediatrician, Dr. Jeanne Schaefer. Unlike many area pediatricians, Dr. Schaefer can relate to Hanson and parents with disabled children, because her stepson also has a chromosome defect. 16-year-old Joseph has been diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). Dr. Schaefer says Joseph is one of three children in the area with PWS. According to the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association U.S.A, PWS is the most common known genetic cause of life threatening obesity in children. It results from an abnormality on the 15th chromosome. PWS typically causes low muscle tone, short stature, social and motor deficits, and a chronic feeling of hunger that, coupled with a metabolism that utilizes drastically fewer calories than normal, can lead to excessive eating and obesity. The food compulsion makes constant supervision necessary. Dr. Schaefer says some parents have to lock their food cabinets. She says, when Joseph started school and was given more freedom from home, he would try to excessively eat at school. Dr. Schaefer says, now Joseph’s entire day is supervised whether he realizes it or not. She says the hardest thing about having a child with special needs is trying to coordinate every aspect of their care. But unlike most children with PWS, Schaefer says Joseph is high functioning. He may even grow up to have a job and live in a supervised environment away from home. Hanson admits she struggles with the fact that Ellery will need lifelong care. “She may not grow up and get a job or go to college or get married… Those are hard things to deal with. We are just trying to make her life as good as it can be and provide her with every opportunity we possibly can.”
