Alief Brahmarizky R.

Hello! I'm Alief, a designer

who just got a bachelor's degree in Architecture, but not hoping to be a Ted Mosby in my later life. I've been making graphic design works even since 8 years ago, until now that I'm still pursuing my passion in this discipline. I'm excited about exploring new approaches and styles to take another depth into design creation. Now that I've developed my architectural designing practices, I've sharpened my problem-solving ability that creates design solutions in various mediums. Email

When I mention about architectural design, I think it’s the most multidiscipline scope of design that I’ve made. The process is heavy on feeling about how people perceive space through their senses, and thinking on how to improve them with spatial solutions. In the execution, it involves 3d modelling, maquette making, critical analyzing, rendering, layout designing— you name it.

Innards of The Porcupine Alley

Innards of The Porcupine Alley 2019

Innards Of The Porcupine Alley is a pavilion design for my first project while taking the Architectural Design 3 subject in Universitas Indonesia. The brief of this project corresponds to Indonesia’s plan to move their capital city to Kutai Kartanegara, and I should exhibit a pavilion located in any part of that city. I conceptually designed the pavilion to be located in Bangkirai Hills, Kutai Kartanegara.

Architectural Design 3 1st Project

Site The site took place specifically on a bridge called Canopy Bridge in Bangkirai Hills Rainforest.

This pavilion would accompany the experience of visitors crossing by the bridge by giving them a photogenic space with unique spatial qualities.

Form Development I developed the form by making physical models from the very basic idea of intersecting lines, then developing lines to shapes, giving some tilted angle, and using hinges as a design element for the formation model.

Exploded Detail

Exploded Structure

Each of the module of this pavilion consists of a board of plywood, acrylic rod, metal bumper, and gyroscopical hinge. This detail was inspired by a pavilion designed by Thomas Heatherwick.

As a hanging pavilion, the structure utilizing trees on the site to become a column. This pavilion is also not a rigid structure, so it can move insignificantly to adapt the condition around.

The southeast side of this pavilion has openings on its side, so people don’t feel narrowed before they’re crossing over the bridge. People can also take photos with their surroundings and the pavilion from the bridge across without getting intervented.

The northwest side of this pavilion has an opening on the center so people can see their surrounding but not really intervented by the pavilion.

Jakarta Automobile Historical Hall

Jakarta Automobile Historical Hall 2019

Jakarta Automobile Historical Hall is a building project planned to be located in Sudirman Street, Central Jakarta. The building itself designed to function as a museum of automobile in Jakarta. This building is the last project in my third Architectural Design Studio in college. I designed this building by understanding how people come and go from this building, and also understanding the climate in Indonesia that have an impact to car maintenance.

Educational Foodcourt Holtikultura 2020

Educational Foodcourt Holtikultura is a building design for my first project while taking the Architectural Design 4 subject in college. Being located near schools that consist of many levels, this building was designed to mix the function of the canteen and an educational facility. Students are expected to understand basic calculations through real-life practices, that take place in this building.

Sunchaser of Seven Dials

‘The Sunchaser’ of Seven Dials 2020

‘Sunchaser’ of Seven Dials is an urban intervention design for my second project while taking the Architectural Design 4. I created an architectural design that responds to the pandemic by connecting two residential buildings, which serve as a connector to avoid the hustle highway, and as a delivery system that reduces human contacts by using conveyor belts that connect each residential unit.

Architectural Design 4 2nd Project

As with every architectural design, I started by understanding the site context. I chose Seven Dials in West London, UK as the site of my project, and I analysed its various street widths and building heights, the function of each building, and the density of the residential units. Here’s the data that I synthesised as posters. PORTFOLIO 2021

Understanding the Possibilities After I analyzed the site potentials, I listed down the possibilities that may happen with the intervention that I design.

Normal Situation

If there is no pandemic, buying and selling activities will run normally with buyers approaching the selling place and transacting on the spot.

New Normal Situation

In new normal conditions, buyers will use goods delivery services to buy goods, because of the recommendation not to leave the house and the crowded area of Seven Dials.

Programming To know what rooms will be needed and where will it takes place, I’m trying to understand the program that would be needed, and connecting each particular program to each other so the idea would be more spatially recognizable.

Forming by Model Explorations To get connectivity between buildings, I explored and developed the urban intervention design. With its emphasis on inter-connectivity, my approach creates a continuous circulation of interconnected elements into each building’s exterior space as opposed to just two.

Delivery of Goods Goods are delivered using a Conveyor Belt which is connected to all residential units in the residential area of this road.

Connection Between Units Each unit of this residential area is divided into rows and columns, which later the freight forwarder can send goods shipments based on the name of the delivery destination unit, and only requires coordinates in the form of (row, column)

Vein within Vine: A Tribute To Zhou Daguan is our submission at the “Cambodia Remote Hideout Huts” international architecture competition held by Bee Breeders in 2020 and awarded as an honorable mention laureate. The site is located in The Vine Retreat, a well-known Cambodian ecotourism destination located in Kep Province, Cambodia.

Site The Vine Retreat,

The competition brief asked that hut designs accommodate two people for a short stay. The huts are to offer guests both a means for individual privacy, as well as community-based living.

IGELKÖTTEN Assembly Instructions Booklet In Architecture Design 3 studio when I designed a pavilion on the bridge, I should make something that explains how that pavilion was constructed. So I made this booklet that was inspired by how IKEA made their assembly instructions that explains a lot without telling a single word.

27

Innards of The Porcupine Alley Design Report Year 2019 Pages 15

Other than the assembly instructions booklet, I also made the design report of this project. This one recaps all the thinking processes of making the pavilion design and I want to bring it more of like a storybook. The design mostly was influenced by Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Favorite".

Jakarta Automobile Historical Hall, A Storybook

Sunchaser of Seven Dials Design Report

Actually, it's also a design report for another design project of mine, but I'd like it more to call it a storybook because it's a far cry from something people would call a "report". I was inspired to make a vibrant design that's more expressionistic to tell the story.

This is the design report of my first full-online architectural project, so the project was heavy on digital outputs instead of some physical outputs as I used to. Making reports needs me to fill the gaps that occur between each plothole that I made unconsciously during the project making.
