“The Monkey King” (2023)
Embark on a brave and wild journey with the actionpacked animated family film “The Monkey King” when it makes its streaming premiere on Netflix, Friday, Aug. 18. Set in ancient China, the film follows a charismatic Monkey (voiced by Jimmy O. Yang, “Space Force”) who, unlike all the other monkeys that live nearby, was born from a magic stone. Gifted with magical powers and cast out by his peers for his differences, Monkey grows up determined to become an immortal king powerful enough to match his own ego. Setting out on an epic journey, during which he battles demons, dragons and more, a chance meeting with a humble peasant named Lin (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, “Just Add Magic”) challenges Monkey to become the best version of himself. Based on the classic novel “Journey to the West,” written in 17th-century China during the Ming Dynasty and attributed to author and politician Wu Cheng’en, “The Monkey King” is directed by Anthony Stacchi (“The Boxtrolls,” 2014), with a screenplay by Steve Bencich and Ron J. Friedman (the writers of “Brother Bear,” 2003). The voice cast also includes Stephanie Hsu (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Hoon Lee (“Warrior”), BD Wong (“Mr. Robot”), Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”), Jo Koy (“Easter Sunday,” 2022), Ron Yuan (“Mulan,” 2020) and Andrew Pang (“Luke Cage”).
“The Upshaws” - Season 4
Season 4 of the comedic family saga “The Upshaws” makes its premiere on Netflix, Thursday, Aug. 17. Set in Indianapolis, the series follows The Upshaws, a working-class blended family, through their daily lives as family patriarch Bennie (Mike Epps, “Dolemite Is My Name,” 2019) tries to find peace while raising his four kids — Bernard Jr. (Jermelle Simon, “Sojourn,” 2018), Kelvin (Diamond Lyons, “Colin in Black & White”), Aaliyah (Khali Spraggins, “Empire”) and Maya (Journey Christine, “Let it Snow,” 2019) — and balancing his relationships with his wife, Regina (Kim Fields, “The Facts of Life”), and ex Tasha (Gabrielle Dennis, “A Black Lady Sketch Show”). Meanwhile, Bennie’s perpetually unimpressed sister-in-law, Lucretia (Wanda Sykes, “Monster-in-Law,” 2005), keeps an eye on them all. In this new season, according to Netflix, “the Upshaws continue to ride life’s ups and downs, including new jobs, bigger dreams, health struggles and some major life surprises but still hanging on with the love that comes with family.”
“Harlan Coben’s Shelter” - Season 1
Based on the novel of the same name by Harlan Coben, the new mystery drama series “Harlan Coben’s Shelter” premieres on Prime Video, Friday, Aug. 18. After the sudden death of his father, Mickey Bolitar (Jaden Michael, “Colin in Black & White”) starts a new life in Kasselton, New Jersey, and quickly finds himself tangled in the mysterious disappearance of a new student at his school, Ashley Kent (Samantha Bugliaro, “5th Borough,” 2020), which leads to uncovering unimaginable secrets within their quiet suburban community. With the help of his friends — the inventive Arthur “Spoon” Spindell (Adrian Greensmith, “Metal Lords,” 2022), and secretive Ema Winslow (Abby Corrigan, “Castle Rock”) — Mickey pulls back the sleepy facade of Kasselton to reveal a dark underground that may hold the answers to decades of disappearances, deaths, and legends. Co-written for the screen by Harlen Coben, Charlotte Coben (“Stay Close”) and Alfredo Barrios Jr. (“Burn Notice”), the series also stars Constance Zimmer (“Good Trouble”), Sage Linder (“The Next Step”) and Didi Conn (“Benson”).
“Puppy Love” (2023)
The things we do for our kids ... and our pets? Two dog parents put it all on the line for their furry children in the new rom-com “Puppy Love,” premiering on Amazon’s Freevee streaming service Friday, Aug. 18. After what turns out to be a truly disastrous first date, wild child Nicole (Lucy Hale, “Pretty Little Liars”) and socially anxious Max (Grant Gustin, “The Flash”) never plan to see each other again — until they learn that their dogs found a love match in each other, and there are puppies on the way! While the seemingly comically mismatched couple are forced to become responsible co-parents for their new grand-puppies, they may just end up finding love themselves. From directors Nick Fabiano (“Other Dads”) and Richard Alan Reid (“Book of Love,” 2022), “Puppy Love” features a screenplay written by Reid, Greg Glienna (“Meet The Parents,” 1992), Peter Stass (“Maybe It’s Me,” 2002) and first time screenwriters Kirsten Guenther and Dan Scheinkman. The cast is rounded out by Nore Davis (“Dickinson”), Christine Lee (“Black Summer”), Al Miro (“Dangerous,” 2021), Rachel Risen (“Leap Year”), Jane Seymour (“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”) and Corey Woods (“Secrets of the Morning,” 2023).
“The Wonder Years” - Season 2, New Episodes
All ten episodes from Season 2 of “The Wonder Years” will be available to stream on Disney+ as of Thursday, Aug. 17. Inspired by the much-beloved, award-winning series of the same name (which originally ran from 1988-1993), the second season of this reimagining originally aired in June of 2023, continuing to follow the coming-of-age story of one boy – Dean Williams (Elisha “EJ” Williams, “Puppy Dog Pals”) – and the unique struggles he faces as young Black child living in Montgomery, Alabama, during the 1960’s. Having faced the ups and downs of growing up in the face of adversity, an adult Dean Williams (voiced by Don Cheadle, “The Guard,” 2011) looks back at his life and narrates his own story – a story full of laughter, lessons, love, and, of course, wonder, as the Williams family nears the dawn of a new decade (the ever-groovy 1970s). From creator Saladin K. Patterson (“Psych”), this second season of “The Wonder Years” also stars: Dule Hill (“The West Wing”) as Bill Williams; Saycon Sengbloh (“Respect,” 2021) as Lillian Williams; Laura Kariuki (“Along for the Ride,” 2022) as Kim Williams; Julian Lerner (“Yes Day,” 2021) as Brad Hitman; Amari O’Neil (“Gummi Bear,” 2019) as Cory Long; Milan Ray (“Charm City Kings,” 2020) as Keisa Clemmons and more.
“Chibi Tiny Tales” – Season 3
It’s no small thing – Season 3 of “Chibi Tiny Tales” is now available to stream on Disney+. Join your favorite Disney Branded characters while they recall some of their wildest adventures, as each episode of this short series tells a story from different “Chibi-fied” friends, including Mickey Mouse (“Mickey Mouse Funhouse”), Phineas and Ferb (“Phineas and Ferb”), Cricket Green (“Big City Greens”), Anne Boonchuy (“Amphibia”), Molly McGee (“The Ghost and Molly McGee”), Penny Proud (“The Proud Family”), Luz (“The Owl House”), Pua, Moana and Maui (all of “Moana,” 2016) and more. This third season hops aboard the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, sets sail on a Jungle Cruise, and even heads to Hollywood, where the Green family explores the foreboding Tower of Terror. These Chibis may be tiny – but their adventures are certainly larger than life.
“Solar Opposites” - Season 4
To save the Earth or to Terraform... that is the question. The planet’s most conspicuous new residents continue their study of humanity and all they have to offer when “Solar Opposites” Season 4 premieres on Hulu, Monday, Aug. 14. Created and written by “Rick and Morty’s” Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, this oddball animated comedy follows a team of aliens from the planet Shlorp as they make the most of their new lives after crash landing in middle America. Armed with a pupa (first-time voice actor Sagan McMahan) that should eventually terraform Earth into the new planet Shlorp, aliens Korvo (Dan Stevens, “Downton Abbey”), Terry (Thomas Middleditch, “B Positive”), Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone, “The Goldbergs”) and Jesse (Mary Mack, “Twin Cities,” 2017) are split on whether Earth is awful or amazing. While they enjoy junk food, TV and other fun activities, they are repulsed by humanity’s pollution, consumerism and frailty as a race. Heading into the new season, viewers can expect some more “classic Solar chaos, mayhem in the Wall, and some all-new Silvercops adventures” (per Hulu). “Solar Opposites” is written by M. McMahan, alongside Jen McCartney (“The Big Show Show”), Vidhya Iyer (“Mira, Royal Detective”), Joe Saunders (“Comedy Bang! Bang!”), Josh Bycel (“Happy Endings”), Dominic Dierkes (“Workaholics”), Danielle Uhlarik (“Champaign ILL”), May Darmon (“Star Trek: Lower Decks”) and Grace Parra (“Broke”).
“Miguel Wants to Fight” (2023) Get into the thick of it with the new coming-of-age comedy “Miguel Wants to Fight,” making its Hulu debut Wednesday, Aug. 16. Despite growing up in a neighborhood where fighting is a part of everyday life, Miguel (Tyler Dean Flores, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) has never actually found himself in one, and that’s fine by him. But when a series of events and complications turn his life upside down, Miguel and his best friends — David (Christian Vunipola, “Hunters”), Cass (Imani Lewis, “First Kill”) and Srini (Suraj Partha, “Ender’s Game,” 2013) — find themselves on a series of misadventures as Miguel tries to get into his first fight. Also starring Dascha Polanco (“Orange is the New Black”) and Jordyn Owens (“Uncoupled”), “Miguel Wants to Fight” is directed by Oz Rodriguez (“A.P. Bio”) and written by “Primo’s” Jason Concepcion and Shea Serrano. Michael Glassman (“Big Time Adolescence,” 2019) and Jimmy Price (“Doctor Strange,” 2016) are executive producers.
