welcome from the
Home Show Chair Welcome to the 2011 Mid-Minnesota Builders Association Home Show. I am honored once again to have been chosen as this year’s Home Show Chair. We kick off the 30th Annual MMBA Home Show Friday, April 1st, at Noon. We invite you to bring the entire family out to see what this year’s show has to offer. With the economy finally looking up, and spring right around the corner, there is NO better time to see all the great new ideas and the latest trends in the building industry. Whether you’re preparing to build your dream home, remodeling the home you have, or maybe just add a deck, this is the place to be. For the past couple of years, we have had tremendous success with our “Kids Build Seminar” and we are very proud to announce that 2011 is no exception. Thanks, in part to the generosity of many local builders and businesses, this year’s “Kids Build Seminar” will be even bigger and better. There is nothing better than seeing the smiles on all the kids faces, ok and the adults too…as they accomplish their little building project together! Back by popular demand is the “Backyard Bargains”. Who doesn’t like a great deal or a sale? Located in the far end of the Gold Medal Arena, you will have the opportunity to browse through numerous vendors and purchase, at a fraction of the price, their overstock, scratch and dent, slightly used or discontinued
product or merchandise. It’s like being at multiple garage sales, but all under one roof! We have assembled a top notch committee and countless volunteers who are dedicated to bringing you the best home show possible. Without these individuals, this annual event would not take place. A big “thank you” goes out to each and everyone of you! Whatever the reason you attend this year’s 2011 MMBA Home Show, we are sure you will enjoy a day filled with knowledgeable exhibitors, delicious food, great deals and always good friendship. We look forward to seeing you there!

2011 FACT SHEET:
HUNGER AFFECTS EVERYONE ■ In 2010, there were more than three million food shelf visits statewide and 63 million pounds of food were distributed to Minnesota families by food shelves. ■ From 2008 to 2009, there was a 25 percent increase in food shelf visits in Minnesota — the largest recorded increase in 28 years. ■ In 2010, food shelf usage increased on average 14 percent and in the Twin Cities’ suburbs some food shelves reported a 60 percent increase. ■ Children still represent about half of those served at food shelves. ■ In 2010, almost 14 percent of Minnesota households did not have enough money to buy food. ■ Hunger touches people of every age: 56 percent of food shelf visitors are families with children and 20 percent are seniors. ■ More than 50 percent of adult food shelf visitors are employed and 65 percent make less than $1,000 a month, not enough income to cover their basic needs. ■ Of those who use Minnesota’s food shelves, 47 percent of adults and 14 percent of children skip meals because there is not enough food at home. ■ From 2000 to 2010, food shelf usage has tripled — from more than one million visits to more than three million visits annually.

“It saddens me to think that there are children in America who are hungry every day of their lives. No one can live — and grow — without such a fundamental necessity as food. If we Americans reach out to our own communities, we could end this crisis.” ~ Country singer, Tim McGraw

Tax Time
Mid-Minnesota Builders Association As the April 15 federal income tax filing deadline approaches, millions of Americans are sitting down and sorting through dozens of forms to determine how much money they owe Uncle Sam – or, how much of a refund they will get this year. One of those forms, the Mortgage Interest Statement Form 1098, can mean big savings for home owners at tax time. Form 1098, which home owners receive from their lenders, shows the total amount of home mortgage interest paid during the year. Home owners who itemize their federal income tax deductions can deduct 100 percent of their mortgage interest payments on a first or second home for up to $1 million of mortgage debt. They can also deduct the interest paid on up to $100,000 of home equity loans. For most home owners, this means they can deduct ALL of the mortgage interest they’ve paid on their home each year. The ability to deduct home mortgage and home equity loan interest isn’t the only tax benefit for home owners. The three most important sources of tax savings for home owners are: ■ Deductions for mortgage interest ■ Deductions for real estate taxes ■ The capital gains exclusion for the sale of a principal residence Home owners are also able to deduct the state and local real estate taxes they pay each year on an owner-occupied home. When it is time to sell a home, in many cases home owners don’t have to pay capital gains tax on the profit from the sale. Under present law, married couples who have owned and occupied their principal residence for at least two of the
past five years do not have to pay any taxes on the first $500,000 in profits from the sale of their home. Single filers earn up to $250,000 tax free.
We’ve got money to lend for your home – whether it’s your first home or your dream home.
Another deduction home owners may be able to take is for mortgage insurance premiums. Generally, people who purchase a home without putting 20 percent down have to buy mortgage insurance, and those premiums can also be deducted from taxable income. Even home owners who don’t use the home as their principal residence and rent it out may be able enjoy some tax benefits, including interest and depreciation deductions. Buying a home offers tax savings that can add up to tens of thousands of dollars over several years. Home owners rely on the mortgage interest deduction each year to help offset the costs of homeownership and prospective buyers take the deduction into consideration when choosing homeownership over renting. But the mortgage interest deduction, which has been included in the tax code for about 100 years, is in danger. A national deficit commission has proposed reducing or eliminating the deduction as part of a restructuring of the tax code. Find out more about the threat to the mortgage interest deduction, and read “The Tax Benefits of Homeownership,” a study from economists at the National Association of Home Builders that provides specific examples of savings for a variety of income levels and ownership situations, at www.SaveMyMortgageInterestDeduction.com.
