make the most of any outdoor-dining experience. Make a reservation. Outdoor seating is not always easy to get. To ensure you will have a spot at your favorite restaurant, call ahead and reserve a table. Otherwise, you may have to wait quite a while for a table to become available or be forced to sit inside. Scout out restaurants beforehand. If you are hoping to try a new restaurant that boasts outdoor dining, plan a visit to see the layout of the space. Many restaurants, even those without ample outdoor space, cater to the outdoor-seating crowd, even if their outdoor dining area is limited to a handful of cafe tables placed near the curb. "Dining out" takes on an entirely new meaning in temperate climates or when summer arrives. Rather than being cooped up inside for meals, diners flock to cafes and restaurants that boast al fresco seating to enjoy a bit of scenery and fresh air with their meals. When the sun comes out and the breezes are warm, blooming gardens and trellis-covered restaurant patios can be ideal dining spots to grab a meal. Good food combined with a hearty dose of fresh air can make everything from a cappuccino to a hamburger taste better. Considering the best outdoor-dining spots can fill up quickly, and enjoying a meal outside takes a bit of finesse, follow these tips to

OUTDOOR, From Page K3 to spend your meal with pedestrians walking by or inhaling car exhaust fumes, visit the restaurant ahead of time to ensure that the outdoor seating is more amenable to an enjoyable meal. Choose restaurants with overhead coverage. It is one thing to want to eat outdoors, and entirely another to be subjected to the wrath of Mother Nature. An outdoor seating area should be comfortable, offering the best blend of fresh air and ample protection from the elements. Umbrellas or a covered patio can provide shelter should it start to drizzle or you need relief from the summer sun. Don't assume an outdoor restaurant is pet-friendly. Just because there are outdoor
tables does not mean you can bring your pooch along. If you will be spending the day with your dog and then want to enjoy a lunch or dinner outdoors with your pet, verify that a restaurant is pet-friendly before meal time. Do not leave a dog unattended in a hot car and waiting for you to finish a meal should you discover the restaurant is not pet-friendly. Expect some uninvited guests. Dining outside means bees, flies, birds, and other animals. Those who are deathly afraid of all buzzing insects may want to eat indoors instead. Check for a dedicated outdoor waitstaff. Unless there is a waitstaff assigned to outdoor seating, you may spend more time than you anticipated waiting for service outdoors. Waiters may not realize you are
outside, and it can be easy to forget about patrons who are not seated in the heart of the restaurant. Restaurants accustomed to serving guests outdoors will have staff
assigned to outdoor seating areas, particularly during busy times of the day.

A night out on the town means different things to many people. Taking in a movie or dining at a favorite restaurant make great nights out for many people. But men and women looking to stray from the norm are increasingly combining seemingly unrelated activities for a night out that is both social and creatively rewarding. "Paint-and-sip" or "paint-and-snack" businesses have grown increasingly popular in recent years. The premise is quite simple. Patrons reserve a spot (and canvas) and work their way through a painting, all the while conversing with friends and enjoying a spirited beverage or two along the way. Painting events have helped many men and women tap into their inner artist and make a few new friends along the way. The goal of such events is to have fun and teach adults about painting,
and many men and women find the relaxed atmosphere encourages them to express their individuality and artistry. Paint-and-sip events come in various styles. One of the more popular scenarios has people working at an established painting studio, which provides the necessary artistic equipment while guests provide their own drinks and appetizers. Some bars and restaurants also host social painting evenings. Easels and canvasses may be brought into a venue, where participants can paint as they relax with a drink. Food and beverage specials may be part of the package price, or guests may buy items a la carte. Painting events can be organized for private parties, and such parties may take place at private residences or at restaurants or bars. Painting parties have begun to replace
more traditional party themes. Some find such parties an entertaining alternative to traditional bachelor or bachelorette parties, while others host birthday parties or baby showers with painting themes. Painting parties also can be a fun way to get friends together for a girls' or guys' night out. In addition to a fun night out, participants get to take home their

own work of art, which can be gifted or displayed for years to come. To find a painting party by you, inquire with local restaurants or bars if they will be hosting upcoming painting events or even encourage such establishments to do so if no they do not have any events on their schedules.

Restaurants are thriving once again. Since 2014, restaurant-goers have renewed interest in socializing away from home and more money to spend, a stark turnaround from preceding years when diners were living on tighter budgets thanks to a recession that began in 2008. As crowds waiting in line for their favorite eateries begin to grow anew, restaurants have begun to implement new menus and dining styles in an attempt to attract a broader clientele. Many trends are catering
to the younger, technology-driven customer. • Photo-ready foods: Diners are utilizing social media to share their menu choices with people all around the world. Scroll through anyone’s news feed and you’re likely to find photograph’s of last night’s entrée or an impressive dessert enjoyed during a night out with friends. Many restauranteurs understand that their latest culinary creation is likely to find its way onto social media, so a greater emphasis is being placed on plating See TRENDS, Page K7
When dining out, expect to find more attractive plates, as restauranteurs understand diners like to photograph and share their meals through social media.

TRENDS, From Page K7 — or making foods look better when first presented to diners. Digital kiosks: Desire an appetizer or want to reorder another beverage? You may not have to flag down your server to do so. Several restaurants have implemented tablet-based service at their tables. In addition to playing games or getting apprised on the latest specials, guests can order some menu items through tablemounted tablets. And if you’re in a rush for the check, swipe your credit card and pay the bill without waiting for your waiter to bring it over.
Healthier kids’ choices: For years the standard fare for kids has been burgers, fries and various recipes for macand-cheese. But a survey of professional chefs sponsored by the National Restaurant Association revealed that many restaurants are now offering a greater variety of foods on kids’ menus. Soups, salads, leaner meats, and more vegetables are some of the items kids can choose from. Increase in craft foods: Greater emphasis is being placed on creating meals that look and taste good and are produced in eco- and community-friendly ways. Craft foods
are made in small batches from locally sourced ingredients, helping to create a symbiotic relationship between eateries, farmers, food manufacturers, and diners. Community tables: Make new friends while dining out by getting seated at community tables, which are no longer restricted to Japanese hibachi restaurants. These larger tables pair different diners together. Neurogastronomy: Many restaurants are employing neurogastronomy, or the science of manipulating perception of how foods taste by external factors. Everything from the colors of dishes to the sounds
of music being piped in can affect your perception of taste. Prepaid reservations: Today you can purchase just about anything in advance, from movie tickets to vacations. Soon you may be able to prepay for restaurant meals as well. Arrive at your reserved time and enjoy your meal. This trend is beneficial to restaurants because they are guaranteed revenue even if patrons do not show up. Trends in dining out can make meal experiences more unique. Expect some new changes at your favorite restaurants.

Planning a night out on the town with family and friends can be a fun experience. Scouring the most popular hotspots and the newest restaurants falls far short of burdensome, and those tasked with such a responsibility often enjoy the opportunity to get out of the house and soak

up some local culture. As fun as such planning can be, hosts must consider the needs of all who plan to attend before making any final decisions. The following are a few ways hosts can ensure everyone enjoys a night to remember for all the right reasons.
Consider finances. Dinner at the hottest restaurant in town might sound like a grand idea, but hosts must consider if such a feast is affordable for everyone on the invitation list. Hot new restaurants or established locales where reservations are hard to come by tend to be expen-
sive, so hosts should make sure everyone can afford such hotspots before making any reservations. Peruse menus online when looking for a restaurant, paying particular attention to the average cost of an entree at each restaurant you're considering. When planning a dinner for an espe-
cially large party, call each restaurant to determine if they offer limited menus to larger parties. Many restaurants do this for parties of 15 or more, charging a set price per person, and that price is not always less expensive than it would be to dine a la carte. When necessary, find a
restaurant where the cost per person is within reason so no one feels like they need to skip the night out on the town due tofinancial constraints. Choose a central location. Whether you're gettingtogether for a sit-down dinner or just drinks, choose a loca See PLANNING, Page K11

A location that's near to all also allows both you and your guests to spend more time together and less time traveling. Choose a location that's accessible by public transportation. In addition to finding a central location, hosts also should look for a location with easy access to public transportation. organize a night out on the town that involves more than just hopping from bar to bar. Solicit ideas. If you're having trouble planning a fun night for all, solicit some ideas from those you invited. Just because you're hosting the gathering and acting as the go-to guy or gal for those with questions about the night does not mean you can't ask some questions of your own. Ask guests what they want to do, and remember that no idea is too outlandish. If you decide to center the night around a particular activity, just make sure it's something everyone on the guest list can participate in. Be specific when sharing

drinking alcohol, reducing the risk that you or your guests will get behind the wheel when it's safer to take a subway, train or cab. Consider the needs of every guest. When planning a night on the town, hosts must consider the needs of each individual guest before making any reservations or concrete plans. For example, if the group includes a guest with a physical disability, then any gathering spot you choose must be wheelchair accessible and have wheelchair accessible restrooms. Another thing to consider is each guest's lifestyle choices. If one guest does not consume alcohol, then try to

and try again another time. Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually working their way up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place where table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant when kids can handle it. Provide distractions Many young children cannot sit still for long and may need a series of distractions to keep them entertained throughout meals. Pack a bag of tricks that includes toys, games, books, and even a digital device tuned to kids' favorite programs. Pick restaurants that do not have a long wait to get a seat so that kids' patience has not worn thin before you even make it to the table. A sightseeing walk around the restaurant also may be able to provide a welcome distraction
until the food is ready. Pack snacks Although the goal may be to eat out, kids may not be as patient as adults when waiting for their meals to be delivered. Ask servers to bring out the kids' meals when appetizers are served or think ahead and have some light snacks, such as crackers or dry cereal, available to tame kids' hunger pangs.
Choose restaurants wisely Make concessions as to where and when you eat. Coordinate around nap times so children will be happy and well-rested. Select restaurants that accommodate children. Ask to be seated out of the way just in case your son or daughter acts up. This way you will not disturb other patrons. Restaurants tend to be less

such instances as courteously as possible. Apologize to those around you whom your child has disturbed. Remove your son or daughter from the area and take a few moments to help him or her calm down. If kids can't be calmed down, ask that your meal be wrapped. Remember to clean up after yourselves and thank the waitstaff for any extra service, such as lugging a heavy high chair or providing extra silverware if kids drop any forks or spoons. Don't leave a large mess for the server, and tip accordingly. Children grow accustomed to dining out over time. It may take some practice, but with the right planning, families can enjoy meals away from home.

busy right before dinner service and directly after. If you can time your meals to these off-peak hours, it may make for a more enjoyable dining experience. Offer plenty of praise Always let children know when they are doing a great job and behaving well in a restaurant. Engage kids in conversation and keep them entertained. Boredom or attention-seeking behavior can make dining out with youngsters more difficult to manage. A treat or a special reward (sticker or coloring book) can be offered to a child who behaves when dining out. Be courteous and respectful Many children will eventually act up in restaurants, and parents should respond to

Practice, patience and choosing the right times to dine can make dining out with children a positive experience for families.
001253518r1
Parents know taking kids out to eat requires patience. The sights and sounds of a restaurant can be overwhelming and distracting to children used to eating at home. Toddlers have not learned to control their impulses yet, and even school-aged children may experience intermittent breakdowns when they are uncomfortable or not feeling well. But parents who want to take their tots out on the town can employ some easy steps to make eating out a fun excursion for everyone. Practice Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and coauthor of "Emily Post's Etiquette, 18th edition," says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave

Bars and restaurants fuel local economies across the country. Any night when a master mixologist is behind the bar or a gastronomical guru is manning the grill is an opportunity to enjoy a few drinks or a great meal. Many bars and restaurants look to capitalize on the latest trends in an effort to bring customers in and keep them coming back. The following are a handful of the latest trends men and women can expect to encounter on their
next night out on the town. Tech-guided assistance Restaurants and bars are implementing more technology into the service industry, eliminating downtime and streamlining orders. Dread calling a restaurant for reservations? No problem. Many establishments enable you to reserve a table or even preorder dinner from a mobile device. The chef can start prepping your meal even before you arrive and keep the flow in and out
of the restaurant moving right along. Some bars now allow customers to place drink orders via apps or tablets, saving you the struggle of muscling your way to the bar to get a drink. Such apps employ location-based software so servers can quickly and easily find your table. Some chain restaurants even use table-mounted technology so you can get beverage refills or pay for the bill without signaling a server. See NEW STYLES, Page K15

Exotic ingredients It's not only chefs who are testing dining mettle with exotic ingredients. Bartenders are taking a cue from trendy foraged ingredients and using them to modernize outdated cocktails. Botanical ingredients like lichen, honeysuckle, Pacific madrone bark and pine needles are turning up in drinks across the country. Many mixologists also are leaning more heavily on organic and naturally-sourced ingredients rather than prepackaged mixers. Locally sourced products Eco-conscious consumers demand more locally sourced items, and this trend is beginning to pour over into the
beverage industry. Expect to hear bartenders advertising more local ingredients, such as craft beers bottled right up the street or wine made from grapes grown at a nearby vineyard. Some bars may source spirits from neighborhood distilleries. Leafy greens and root vegetables Foods from humble beginnings are turning into gourmet fare. It seems a new bitter green or starchy product is becoming the vegetable du jour each week. Afraid to try your hand at kale or kohlrabi from the comforts of your own kitchen? Don't worry, as many nearby restaurants are likely willing to do that experimenting for you. Spicy-sweet condiments Salsa may have surpassed
ketchup as a favorite dipping sauce, but many others are poised to take the top condiment prize. Savvy chefs are experimenting with a variety of hot and sweet flavor combinations. Expect to find
more jams, jellies, rubs, dips, and glazes with a spicy twist on your favorite foods. Communal drinks Each person in a group ordering his or her own cocktail is not necessarily the
norm anymore. Some establishments are concocting family-style punches that can be enjoyed by all guests pull-
