The towns and communities of Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood, Cuyuna, Trommald, Emily, Riverton and Bay Lake are glad you’re interested in visiting and we are excited to have you as our guest. While you’re here, remember this outdoor destination has been in the works for generations. Some weekend, when you’ve climbed to the top of Miner’s Mountain, tip your hats to the men and women of steel, who dug the earth, and uncovered the minerals that built the backbone of this great country. Without their toil, sacrifice and sweat, we wouldn’t have this great nation to call home. And, we certainly would not have trails worthy of national acclaim. This is a place for family. A regional hub for healthcare. An excellent school district embracing technology. We’re proud to be a destination for tomorrow’s leaders and future entrepreneurs. There are very few times in life that you have the opportunity to be part of a story this big in a region this small. We’re thankful for it, and we’re excited to bring you our story from the land we love, the land we call the Cuyuna Lakes.

Area Attractions Outdoor Recreation Milford Mine Memorial Park
http://crowwing.us/DocumentCenter/View/6468
Milford Mine Memorial Park features natural and man-made habitat that was transformed into a recreation area to be enjoyed by area residents and visitors. It is a humble attempt to preserve the memory 41 miners killed on February 5, 1924, in underground tunnels after a nearby lake flooded the mine. Located in Crosby west of Highway 6 and south of County Highway 30, between Island and Milford lakes.

BREAK Whether it’s just a day away from the kids or a weekend family expedition, paddling excursions are always a great beak. The lakes and rivers of the Cuyuna Range offer a wide variety for both the beginner and the experienced kayaker and canoeist. The scenic Mississippi and Pine Rivers offer opportunities to paddle for just a few hours or a few days. The premier paddling experience is on the deep, clear mine lakes of Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. A chain of mine lakes, starting at the Pennington access, provides hours of bliss in pristine, peaceful surroundings. Deer, bald eagles and osprey are often spotted. Loons may surface nearby. Beach areas provide a place to stretch or enjoy a picnic. Maps showing parking, boat and carryin access points, campsites and scenic views are available at trailheads and the Cuyuna Lakes Chamber office in Ironton. Canoe and kayak rental with shuttle service is available at Cycle Path & Paddle in Crosby.

AWAY
On The Water
The best kept secret in Minnesota is Cuyuna Country. Our pristine lakes provide excellent fishing for a large variety of species, including trout.
Mine Lakes The mine lakes are famous for trout. But, if they are not cooperating, try switching to northern pike. Submerged stands of timber shelter trophy pike, some pushing 30 pounds. The best technique when hooked to a behemoth is to start the motor or grab the oars and pull and snap your line in the underwater forest. The sunken trees also provide cover for hungry small and largemouth bass. Spinner baits are a great choice because the water does not have a lot of weeds and the bait can be worked through the stands of trees and stumps. A pan fish supper awaits if you stay near the underwater trees during low light. Use a cane pole to drop a line to a depth above 30 feet and pull up quickly to keep the fish out of trouble.
Natural Lakes Tired of gonzo fishing amidst jet skiers and power boats? Experience the solitude on our natural lakes where walleye, northern and largemouth bass are the main targets. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon slab crappies or big bluegills. Venture to larger waters for that trophy muskie. Launch your boat at the many public access points or if you are looking for peace and quiet, bring or rent a canoe or kayak and relax on one of the many small lakes with limited access. Grab a map, locate a back road and find your own honey hole on one of our tranquil lakes.
Upper Mississippi River
HANSEN SPORTS - & - HUNTERS BAY STORE
The nearby Mississippi River, with excellent populations of walleye and smallmouth bass, is navigable under normal conditions with a motorized boat but some prefer to float it in a canoe. The stretch from Aitkin to Merrifield is both beautiful and rewarding.

South of Deerwood. Go one half mile south of the Highways 6 and 210 junction, then go east on Country Road 10. Follow 10 for about four miles. Larson Lake parking area is on the east side of the road. Watch for signs. The Arboretum is a beautiful, heavily-wooded and professionally groomed course for all skill levels in the heart of Brainerd/Baxter and is rated one of the best in Minnesota. The location of the start of the Paul Bunyan Trail, the Arboretum boasts a beautiful five-kilometer night lighted course. Go west on Highway 210 from Crosby-Ironton into Brainerd. Remain on 210, also called Washington Street. Take a right at the stoplight at Walgreen’s onto 4th Street NW. Drive about 1/3 mile and take a left on Jackson Street— the Essentia Sports Center will be on the northwest corner. Follow Jackson Street past the backside of the Westgate Mall and take a right onto Conservation Drive into the Arboretum.

Snowmobiling/ATV Winter outdoor enthusiasts will find miles of snowmobile trails which connect to miles of trails in northern Minnesota. In additional to the superb snowmobile trail system, some trails double as nonwinter ATV trails. The Sno-Serpents Snowmobile Club takes great pride in making sure riders have the best groomed trails in the state. They groom 83 miles of beautiful, scenic Crow Wing County.
Miller Black Bear ATV Trails (Map on pg. 21)
The Miller Black Bear trail area, part of the Cuyuna Iron Range area, is located between the cities of Trommald and Riverton off Iverson Road. There are 20 miles of trails all on county and state forest land. Step back in time and see part of the mining era with large iron ore tailing hills and the section six mine pit lake. You will travel over 4,000 acres of gentle rolling hills with scenic overlooks of the Mississippi River with picnic sites.

Cuyuna Country is prime territory for bird watching. Members of the local Bee-Nay-She Council Bird Club, one of the most active and respected bird clubs in Minnesota, have sighted Glossy Ibis, Sabian Gull, Varied Thrush and Buff Breasted Sandpiper. Great Gray Owls, Northern Hawk Owls and resident Barred Owls have also been observed. Careful observers will spot the nests of eagles and osprey, many times near welltraveled trails and roads. The area’s many lakes and wetlands provide important nesting habitat for Common Loons and Wood Ducks. Deciduous woodlands harbor nesting Red Shouldered Hawks, Ruffed Grouse and Barred and Northern Saw Whet Owls. Also in these woodlands are the nests of Whip-poor-wills and Mourning and Golden Winged Warblers. Look for the nest of Pine Warblers in stands of red pine. In winter, Red and White Winged Crossbills may be spotted in the shelter of pine stands while the Bohemian Wax Wings can be found snacking on lingering fruit of mountain ash and crab apple trees. Finches, such as American Goldfinch, Redpoll and Pine Siskin are frequent visitors to area birdfeeders. Harrier Goshawks and other accipiters can also be observed. With thousands of acres of public land, you’ve got a lot of ground to cover. So grab your binoculars, bird books, a comfortable pair of shoes and head for the birds.

Man High The first small step of manned space exploration was launched from the Portsmouth Mine in Crosby on August 19, 1957. Near the trail parking area overlooking the lake is signage depicting the adventure. Air Force Major Dr. David Simons rose above the earth 101,516 feet to become the first successful manned space flight in history. Dr. Simons provided the scientific research that would one day enable Neil Armstrong to step onto the surface of the moon and declare “. . . one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”
