Now it’s time to honor the ‘Best of the Brainerd Lakes’ winners
H
ow many times have people wondered what businesses are the best in the Brainerd lakes? Who has the best buffet? Who is the top local celebrity? Where is the best golf course? The list goes on. And over the years anyone could make the claim for being the area’s best. But, thanks to the first “Best of” contest sponsored by the Brainerd Dispatch/Echo Journal, the voters have spoken. And today we announce the winners from a total of 122,000 online votes cast by over 9,000 participants to determine the top three finishers in 108 categories. The large response from the voters displays a passion to honor top businesses in our lakes area that prides itself on individual and business achievement. Area businesses work hard to earn the support of not only the local residents, but also the hundreds of thousands of annual visitors to our lakes area. We hope our contest continues to encourage area businesses to produce high quality products while delivering great customer service. ar Harbor Supper Club General Manager Amy Moyer is twice as appreciative that the Lake Shore institution was voted “Best Fine Dining” and “Best Nisswa/ Lake Shore Restaurant” in this year’s “Best of the Brainerd Lakes Area” contest. “We’re always very happy and proud to be recognized — and thankful to our customers for voting for us,” Moyer said. “We place customer service above everything else that we do and that we always strive to give our guests the best possible experience every time they come in.” Additional amenities include a large patio open during the summer, pull 20 Best of the Brainerd Lakes 2019
tabs, large group dining areas, and liquor/wine lockers for patrons. “The people — hands down — are what I enjoy, especially our regular customers that come in, and I know their faces, and even new customers, too. We meet people from all over,” she said. Bar Harbor Supper Club has room for groups, and private dining is available. Customers can also order take-out, or dine in and enjoy one of their certified Angus beef products. “Our staff is probably the greatest staff around, in my opinion,” Moyer said. “I think we have the greatest staff, and they’re happy and it shows, and then it translates to our guests.”

magine a late night grilled cheese with bacon craving being satisfied as an appetizer, that’s our Log Rolls! We’ve had a few menu changes in the three years we’ve been in business but the log rolls, wings, and cheese curds have stayed the course. Our wings are a labor of love. We brine, bake, and then fry them so they have a lot of flavor even when ordered “naked” without sauce. Our cheese curds are probably the most popular item on the menu and in the running with the MN State Fair curds which says a lot. We hand make our “tavern fries” in house. Hand cut with flaked salt, the extra time it takes in preparation is definitely worth it. We hear a lot that we have the best fries. Would it be easier to serve a frozen option? Yup. But we aren’t always about what’s easiest. We are about what creates the best product and we want to keep the quality top notch. Hand pattied burgers, fresh salsa made in batches, great food and word of mouth is everything in this business and our reviews reflect that.

rnie’s on Gull won Best Brainerd Restaurant and Best Outdoor Dining in 2019. Last year, Ernie’s won Best Lakeside Dining and Best Outdoor Dining. Ernie’s has seen a lot of changes as the restaurant was given a facelift to include a new patio and bar/dining area. Owner Chris Foy said by winning two more “Best Of’s,” means all of their hard work has paid off. “A lot of our staff has been here for years, and they know what they are getting into every summer,” Foy said. “We have a game plan to
execute it properly and it seems we do this year in and year out. “The big difference this year was the remodel. For people who have not been out here, it still has the look, the charm and the view of Ernie’s ... Everything has been resurfaced and is more open. We have the same amazing location and views of Gull Lake and we have a new chef this summer and that helped a lot.” In the beginning of the summer season, Foy tells his staff that it’s really easy to look good for one day, but it’s hard to look good every single day.

he Y Club has a long standing presence and history in the Mille lacs lake area. Craig Dunmire took over the Y Club in June of 2012 bringing over 30 years of restaurant operation with him with the hopes that his children would follow his footsteps. It’s a public stamp of approval that everyone’s hoping to get,” Carr said. “There’s a lot of competition out there. nique, family-friendly fun is what propelled Safari North to the top as the best relaxation destination and best place for summer family fun in the lakes area. “I think it’s fantastic,” Safari North owner Kevin Vogel said of the results. Now in its sixth year of operation, Safari North offers a wildlife park with exotic animals, a petting zoo, play area and plenty of other summertime attractions for all ages. Giraffes, sloth bears and monkeys are among the most popular experiences. Other attractions include riding camels and petting barnyard animals.
Vogel, who owns the Safari North along with his wife, Kelly, believes the business offers a unique experience not available anywhere else in the lakes area. “And it’s something for all ages,” he added. “If you’re 2 years old or 80 years old.” And as far as relaxation, Safari North allows guests take their time while going through the attractions. “There’s no rush,” Vogel said, noting visitors can take a nice leisurely stroll or sit down and watch the animals from afar, whether that means spending two hours or six hours there. “We’re humbled by the local support,” Vogel said. “And it means a lot.”

he Pine River Bakery, which has been in downtown Pine River for many decades, was voted Best Bakery in the area for the second straight year. The current owners, John and Julie Sigafus, took over Pine River Bakery in July of 2014. Julie is the baker, with over 40 years of experience in retail baking. John fries and finishes the doughnuts and makes wholesale deliveries. The bakery is one of only a few full line bakeries in the area. It has a nostalgic feeling when you enter the bakery. You will find many of your childhood favorites, making a decision a hard one. Most everything is made right at the bakery, with a few exceptions during the holiday season.

un for the Lakes is an all-volunteer race that started in 2008 by the Brainerd Jaycees. The run has grown tremendously since the first event and draws approximately 1,500 runners each year. What many may not know about this particular run is that it is organized start to finish by the volunteers of the Brainerd Jaycees and with the support of several community members and local businesses. The committee of Run for the Lakes is very thankful for those who have voted them No. 1 Best Fun Run in the Best of Brainerd Lakes. Although the event
has a fun run for kids, it also has a 5K, 10K, and full, half, relay marathons and is recognized as a Boston Marathon qualifier. The area is one of Minnesota’s top destinations and the committee believes they were voted No. 1 because of its beautiful scenic course and the fact that all proceeds are donated locally to various non-profit organizations. Many racers also enjoy that it is very family-friendly. Each year, the committee strives to add something new to continue to be better. The post-race feedback means a lot for them as a race so they can improve each year.

ission Tavern is a year round business open seven days a week. Many people ask if we are closed in the winter or if our hours change because of our location being outside of Crosslake. We keep the same hours year round. We also have meals for kids. We keep updating our menu with new items.” The burrito and the chimichanga are the top menu items at El Tequila. couldn’t believe it when Babe told me the news that once again this year I’ve been voted the Best Local Celebrity in the Brainerd lakes area. I’ve been around this neck of the woods for almost 60 years and I still love this lakes area. And to find I’m still thought of as the No. 1 local celebrity among all the people who make this area a great place to live warms this old lumberjack’s big heart. Babe and I continue to greet new friends. It never gets old seeing the shock and smiles on the young faces when I call their names out loud when they visit me at my home at Paul Bunyan Land, 10 miles east of
Brainerd on County Road 18. A family tradition passed down through the generations, thousands of locals and tourists visit me every summer, sitting on my boot or getting selfies taken with me. My image and namesake is found throughout the lakes area from the Paul Bunyan State Trail to the outline of my boot prints to mark my former home in the Kohl’s parking lot to my statue at the Brainerd Chamber’s Hwy. 371 Welcome Center. At The Babinski Foundation we go above and beyond the basic needs of
our animals by providing costly surgeries they may be turned away or euthanized for at other facilities. he Lakes Area Growers Market was created in March 1986. As a matter of fact, there are at least two of the original organizers still living in the Brainerd area: Ruth Gilbertson and her daughter, Sonja. We’ve always maintained the “old fashioned” farmers market by keeping products locally produced or made by the person selling the product or a
family member, and within a 50-mile radius. Products have usually satisfied the healthy eating needs with fresh produce, honey, baked and canned goods, eggs, USDA approved meats along with meeting gardening needs: bedding plants and fresh-cut flowers and perennials, to name a few. We also have a minimal number of crafts available, like embroidered dish towels and lotions made with honey. We are now maintaining two locations,

The late Steve VandePutte started Brainerd Yamaha in 1989. And shortly after opening, Ski-Doo and Ski-Doo lines were added. The business expanded with the purchase of Brainerd Honda in 1992 from the Tengwall family, which was run by Chris VandePutte. Steve and Chris VandePutte decided to combine the two dealerships into one and Brothers Motorsports was formed in 1997. The name was picked, not because the VandePuttes were brothers, but
because they wanted to offer a family environment with the business. In 2000, the VandePuttes purchased the building that housed the Budweiser distributor, and moved the sales portion of the dealership into the facility where it stands today on Fairview Road in Baxter. She works 365 days a year and answers the door at all hours, even working in the middle of the night to help anglers get what they need. Customer service is something Sheree Wicktor lives and she appreciates the customers, many of whom she’s known through three generations of their families. “When you are going fishing everyone is in a good mood,” she said. The Highway 371 location was voted “Best Camper/RV Dealer” in this year’s “Best of the Brainerd Lakes Area” contest. “It’s definitely something special, especially in the area as having as many dealers close by. It was definitely nice to win,” Jewell said.

orthwest Carpet was chosen the Best Flooring/Carpet Store in the Brainerd lakes area for the second straight year, and owner Russ Caughey knows who to thank for that honor. “Our installers,” he said. “I get good reviews on 100 percent of the jobs. People are totally happy with them. After each job is done, then I call them and make sure that everything went according to the way it was supposed to. They always say what a great job the installers did, how polite and how clean.” Caughey started Northwest Carpet 44
years ago, and for 41 of those years, he has relied on the same family — through two generations — to install the carpet and flooring he sells. “They’re the ones that have the last contact with the customer, so if they weren’t happy, you would lose a customer. My installers always make sure the customer is happy,” Caughey said. The corner of Business Highway 371 and Buffalo Hills Lane has been the home to the small flooring business for almost 30 years. Northwest Carpet’s main focus is carpet, but it also sells hardwood and laminate flooring, luxury vinyl tile and no-way vinyl.
