Meet Whitebirch Golf Pro Nolan Toft
B
reezy Point Resort offers three celebrated golf courses for play. Deacon’s Lodge, Whitebirch and the Traditional Golf Course are all well known among players and pros alike. Whitebirch offers more than 6,700 yards of play with both sand and water in a rich green landscape. It was the first championship golf course layout in the Brainerd lakes and remains one of the favorites. Nolan Toft is an assistant golf pro at Whitebirch Golf Course. He comes to the course after spending six years with the Breezy Point property at Deacon’s Lodge. Toft grew up in Nevis and says he has always enjoyed golf, even when he was a young. In high school he played as a member of the high school golf team in Park Rapids. He says he never thought about the sport being a career opportunity for him, though, and after graduation he attended college in search of a business management career. Once he realized his interest in golf 2 | 2021 Brainerd Lakes Area GOLF GUIDE
was a little stronger than his interest in banking, he says he got in touch with head PGA professional Mark Johnson who found a place for him. Toft, a PGA Assistant Professional, and his wife welcomed a baby girl in April. He says he has lots to be excited about this year. “New job, new kid,” he says with a laugh. He is enthusiastic to learn a new operation and some new skills and says all indications are that the course will be a busy one this year. “Last year kind of limited what people were able to do and golf courses were still able to be open. That brought people over in new numbers. Some of them had not played before or hadn’t played regularly.” Whitebirch Golf Course opened with nine holes in 1983 and grew to 18 holes in 1987. You can find everything you need in women’s and men’s golf apparel and accessories at the course pro shop. A driving range is available at the course. “I like the character of the course,” Toft says about Whitebirch. There’s
not a ton of holes that feel the same. It’s a little bit of a sneaky, tricky course. Sometimes people look at the yardages and feel like they can tear it up but it will surprise you.” He says Hole 16 is a good-looking hole and that it’s always entertaining to play. “My approach to teaching is simple,” says Toft, “I don’t believe in tearing someone’s swing down and then rebuilding it. I work to their goals and mine is always to help them to enjoy the game a little better.” Enjoying the fabulous rich, green fairways and spectacular views aren’t the only reward of playing the course. Follow up the day with a panoramic view of the sights of Whitebirch Golf Course from Antler’s Restaurant, located at the Whitebirch Golf Course Clubhouse. Antler’s rustic interior lives up to its name and offers fine dining, featuring everything from seafood to prime rib. An experience you’ll never forget!
I
t is an exciting time to be at Minnesota National Golf Club & Resort in McGregor. The 2021 season will be the first year of operations under new ownership and the staff is excited to bring their vision to reality. They invite and welcome you to share in this excitement with them. Under new ownership, there are plenty of exciting changes planned with a high priority placed on creating a “family friendly” atmosphere. Minnesota National Golf Club & Resort is making a new commitment to improve every aspect of the customer’s experience. Some changes you will see immediately, while others will be more long term. Therefore, every time you revisit Minnesota National, you will see continued changes and improvements to the golf course, service, amenities and facilities. The initial projects include upgrades to the exterior of the clubhouse and some subtle and some not-so-subtle remodeling of the interior. For golfers, you will notice increased amenities and service upon arrival, in the golf shop, on the driving range, while playing the golf course and in the new restaurant. A full-time food and beverage director has been added to the staff allowing you to enjoy a
consistent, quality experience each time you visit the restaurant and bar. Enjoy a cold drink and delicious meal before, during or after your round or anytime you’re in the McGregor area. A new fleet of 80 Electric Club Cars with stateof-the-art Visage GPS, luxury seats, USB ports and more will be on the course by the first part of June. An improved agronomy program has also been put in place. Minnesota National has long been recognized for its quality conditions that will now become even better. These new programs will improve turf quality, playing conditions and overall aesthetics of the golf course, including aggressive top-dressing of fairways and greens, tee box revitalization and bunker re-design. Several new pieces of equipment have been added to help them realize top quality results. The key location of the course — only two hours north of the Twin Cities and an hour from the popular summer vacation areas of Brainerd, Duluth and Grand Rapids — has always been part of its attraction, but coming soon, lodging space will increase with new construction adding to their premiere Play & Stay lodging options. Minnesota National is already loved for its breathtaking scenery, but the goal for the future will be to
make Minnesota National Golf Club & Resort a top northern Minnesota golf destination. They will soon be introducing fantastic new weekday Stay & Play specials, which will be valid for lodging Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and golfing Mondays through Thursdays. Make your plans today to Stay & Play premiere style at Minnesota National Golf Club & Resort this summer. Minnesota National is a perfect option for corporate outings, for families to spend a fun and relaxing day together, or as the ideal setting to exchange wedding vows on the course, in their beautiful Clubhouse or in the red barn off Hole 15. The main banquet room onsite seats 250. Minnesota National Golf Club & Resort’s future focus will include the addition of new housing and lodging accommodations. This plan also includes expanded services and amenities for the entire family to enjoy. And, not just during the summer, but throughout the winter as well. Staff has optimistic outlook going into 2021
Long known as one of the premiere courses in the lakes area, Madden’s on Gull Lake offers four different exquisite places to play with a fit for every golfer. Madden’s four courses and 63 holes take your play through some of the most beautiful hardwoods and luscious greens in the area. Each hole offers a chance to take in some of the country’s most stunning scenery. Last year area courses enjoyed an increase in numbers when limitations were placed on many other activities. Some of the people who had left the game returned, and others took up the
game for the first time. Madden’s was the perfect place to start. Madden’s puts an emphasis on instruction and has lessons for young golfers starting as early as four years old. Bennett Smed, head teaching professional at Madden’s, offers instructions and tips on the fundamentals of the game to those starting out and can help you move your existing game to the next level. Once you perfect your physical form, you’ll need to have the right tools for the game. Titleist and Mizuno have both joined the menu of clubs offered

at the course this year, and TrackMan, a Launch Monitor system, is used in every lesson, club fitting and skill assessment that is done at the course. The golf staff at Madden’s is optimistic for the outlook in 2021 and are excited to see some of the new faces from last year return for the coming season. Pine Beach East, Pine Beach West and the Social 9 are favorites with this new group as well as with many long-time members. The junior program continues to grow and offerings for the spring, summer and fall will give young golfers a chance to spend time on the greens. The Classic at Madden’s is a jewel and a “must play” course. A true champion course, it sits at 59th on Golf Digest’s list of America’s top 100 Greatest Public Courses.

SPONSORED CONTENT | CUYUNA ROLLING HILLS
Cuyuna Rolling Hills accommodates the casual and avid golfer By Terry Thompson, owner If you have been in business 98 years, you have a product that people like. Cuyuna Rolling Hills (formerly Cuyuna Country Club) has been open since 1923. It was formed by several local businessmen along with Cuyler Adams, whom the Cuyuna Range is named after. For many years Cuyuna Country Club was a members-only golf club and had 9 holes. It also had a shooting/trap range. In 1988 the back 9 was added to make it an 18hole golf course and the shooting range closed. As time has gone by, the golf course went from members-only to a public golf course where everyone is welcome. In 2013 the Thompson family purchased the golf course and changed the name to Cuyuna Rolling Hills. The name was chosen to describe the layout and design of the course as it is cut
through the rolling hills of the Cuyuna range. The front 9 is more open and it allows you to swing away, where the back 9 is tighter and requires an accurate tee shot. The course was designed to be challenging, but in recent years some changes have been made to accommodate the casual golfer while keeping it a challenge to the avid golfer. The sport of golf started to decline around the year 2006, which was attributed to cost. We have worked extremely hard to keep golf very affordable at our course. I believe that we are the best buy in the Brainerd lakes area; many of our customers have told us for the price that they paid, they can’t believe that our course is as nice as it is. Come golf Cuyuna Rolling Hills and after your round, make sure to let us know what you think. We appreciate the feedback.

Construction crews work on Cragun’s Legacy Courses Tuesday, April 20, 2021, on a renovation project set to complete in the summer of 2023. Steve Kohls / Brainerd Dispatch
Cragun’s big renovation
SET TO COMPLETE IN SUMMER OF 2023
One lakes area golf destination is getting bigger. Construction has started this spring at Cragun’s Legacy Courses to expand its current 36-hole championship golf complex to 45-holes by the summer of 2023. Minnesota native and professional golf icon Tom Lehman partnered with Cragun’s to BY CONRAD aid in the remodel ENGSTROM and redesign of the Sports Writer Legacy Courses. “We are extremely excited,” Cragun’s general manager Eric Peterson said. “I’ve gotten to know Tom and his design team and watch him work. Who’s not excited about Tom Lehman in Minnesota golf and what comes with that? But I am really excited about the renovation of the golf course and expansion.” When the renovation is complete the Legacy Courses will look different. Plans are to re-do every hole on the course including reversing the direction of some holes.

“We are freshening this thing up where most of the holes will be unrecognizable,” Peterson said. “We are renovating all 36-holes of golf we currently have and in fact of the 36-holes we currently have we are eliminating two or three golf holes altogether. It’s an incredible remodel.” Lehman’s son played in a junior event at the Legacy Courses last fall and Lehman visited the property for the first time to watch his son play. “(Lehman) played the property and then our golf team talked with him and met about our plans of expanding the golf course as well as remodeling,” Cragun’s director of golf Chuck Klecatsky said. “That’s how the partnership started.” The remodel will incorporate holes from Bobby’s and Dutch’s Legacy to form Lehman’s 18. Dutch’s holes one, two, three and four will be combined to be the first three holes of the Lehman course. Holes 4-8 of the Lehman’s 18 will be brand new and designed on the east side of Cragun’s property. Hole nine will be what is currently Bobby’s 14 with new modifications. Then the back nine of Lehman’s 18 will begin four new holes that will stretch all the way out to the Gull River. The finishing holes of Lehman’s course
will use some combination of Bobby’s 15, 16, 17 and 18 as well as using the space of the gambler’s hole to make the 18th hole of Lehman’s course lead back to the clubhouse. “All those Lehman’s 18 holes of golf are getting an extensive remodel or basically a complete renovation to where it’s a new golf hole,” Peterson said. “That gives you a sense of how complete that 18 holes will be. So it won’t be really recognizable.” Klecatsky added it’s bittersweet to see the original Bobby’s and Dutch’s courses change so much, but said the improvements will be great. “The Lehman people put some fresh eyes on it and said here’s how we can best maximize the use of the land while still being environmentally friendly and also taking into account pace of play,” Klecatsky said. “We believe the product that will come out, in the end, will be better than the product before.” The 27 holes that remain will be called Dutch’s 27. Those holes will also be remodeled with new routing. Some holes will be reversed to be played in the opposite direction. “It’s going to make the golf course more friendly, but we are also going to keep the challenge for the lower

Cragun’s renovation set to ‘reimagine the playing experience’ Golf season in the Brainerd lakes area is upon us, so why not check out one of the “World’s Top Golf Destinations” at Cragun’s Resort? Home of the CRMC Championship, Cragun’s Legacy Courses offer golfers of all skill levels an enjoyable day on the course set against a backdrop of breathtaking views. Cragun’s is excited to announce the launch of a $10 million dollar golf course renovation in partnership with Tom Lehman. The renovation will include improvements to all existing 36 holes, while adding an additional 9 holes of championship level golf. Golfers can come and play the existing course and watch the expansion and renovation live in progress. Eric Peterson, Cragun’s general manager, said, “Our overall vision is to reimagine the playing experience and create Minnesota’s premier golf facility, with 45-holes of Championship golf, all out of one beautiful clubhouse.” Renovations will include reducing the existing bunkers and rebuilding the remaining bunkers
in more strategic locations with white sand. A few holes will be completely different, some will include new green complexes and several additional tee boxes will be added. The new Lehman 18 is scheduled to be completed for play by August of 2022, with a grand opening of all 45 holes in the summer of 2023. The golf course expansion will feature two housing developments along the new holes with amazing building sites overlooking fairways and prominent natural features. Homeowners will enjoy maintenance-free homes in a resort-style setting. For additional information visit our website at www.legacyvillagemn.com. After a day on the course, enjoy a meal and a craft beer or cocktail at the Legacy Grille in the 35,000-square-foot Legacy Clubhouse. handicappers,” Peterson said. “The golf course is actually getting longer.” Sixty percent of the bunkers will be taken away and the bunkers that stay will be replaced with Ohio’s best sand. “We are going to eliminate all of the bunkers we have on the golf course currently and put back less than half of the bunkers we have,” Peterson said. “We are going to elevate our level of golf. Once we add some length and modify some golf holes the quality of our golf course will be as good if not better than any public golf course in Minnesota when we are done.” Sand traps will be strategically placed to challenge the lower handicapped golfer. “Right now we have a lot of bunkers that are not in play for the low handicap players,” Peterson said. “Where a beginner or mid-handicap player will hit into some bunkers. We are trying to make the golf course more challenging for the single-digit handicap and make it easier for the mid- to upperhandicapper. That’s how Tom sees the game as well.” The hope is the renovations make the course more challenging and makes Cragun’s poised to host its Mackenzie Tour event the CRMC Championship for the next five years. Lehman was named honorary chairman of the CRMC Championship in 2020 before the tournament was canceled due to border
restrictions caused by COVID-19. “The CRMC Championship will be hosted on 18 holes out here,” Klecatsky said, who is also the CRMC Championship tournament director. “There might be a tournament compilation that is a little closer to the clubhouse. That will be determined when the event comes.”
“The addition of nine holes is great. It will also help us to serve more people and have more room for everyone to play more golf.” - Chuck Klecatsky There is still uncertainty surrounding the 2021 CRMC Championship as the Mackenzie Tour has yet to announce its 2021 schedule. The course will need two full years of construction before the full 45 holes are completed. However, a plan is in place to open in phases. Twenty-seven holes will be open at the Legacy Courses while construction is occurring. Lehman’s 18 should be open by August of 2022. Bobby’s back nine is currently closed
to start the 2021 golf season. By July, Dutch’s front nine will be closed and there will already be new holes to be played at the Legacy Courses in the summer of 2021. “The great thing is people will be able to see the renovation happening and by July be able to play the new holes and experience some adjustments to some green complexes and play the new bunkers,” Peterson said. “So as the project is happening you’ll be able to get a feel for some of it.” By the late summer of 2022, Cragun’s hopes to have 36-holes open with Lehman’s 18 being one of them. Dutch’s 27 will be finished by early to mid 2023. The reversible par 3 course and practice and teaching facility will remain open throughout construction. “The addition of nine holes is great,” Klecatsky said. “It will also help us to serve more people and have more room for everyone to play more golf. There is a lot of great golf in the Brainerd area right now and we just feel like this will help get our facility up to date. We built the Legacy over 20 years ago and haven’t done much renovations since. So we’re hoping it continues to elevate Brainerd in regional and national golf groups alike.” CONRAD ENGSTROM may be reached at 218-8555861 or conrad.engstrom@brainerddispatch.com. It’s time to power up Savannah Smith - Pequot Lakes Girls Golf Head Coach/PGA Golf Professional at Crosswoods
One of the things I hear most on the lesson tee from my students is, “How can I get more power?” This is a very valid question.
TIPS FROM A PRO
There are some common misconceptions when it comes to power in the golf swing. Some may think, “well, I should just swing harder or faster,” but this way of thinking may cause more harm than good. When people swing faster or harder it typically leads to inconsistent swing patterns and unfavorable ball flights.
follow-through of the swing. When we reach the top of our backswing, the downswing is initiated from the ground up. When we transfer our weight properly toward the target and let our arms and club lag behind, it creates a significant amount of power, almost like a slingshot. This is why being flexible and having excellent hip mobility is important for a proper golf swing.
We actually gain most of our power through our core and hips as we rotate toward the target in the
One activity that I like to have my students do is hold a range basket and pretend like it is a bucket of water.
14 | 2021 Brainerd Lakes Area GOLF GUIDE
Once they are in their golf stance, I have them swing the bucket back and then pretend like they were going to throw it downrange. If they were going to throw that bucket of water as far as they could, how would they do it? If they just use their arms without rotating their hips, it won’t go very far or straight. If they use their whole body and transfer their weight toward the target, the basket goes far and straight. I then have them transfer this to the swing, focusing on rotating their core and hips toward the target in the follow-through. The last piece of the puzzle is getting the timing down. As they say, it’s all in the hips, right?

The Roses become new owners AT THE VINTAGE IN STAPLES
West of Brainerd there’s an old course getting new owners. Ernie and Katie Rose bought The Vintage Golf Club in Staples and its 270 acres with 18-holes of championship golf. “We just really BY CONRAD love the people up ENGSTROM there and the area,” Sports Writer Ernie Rose said. “We kind of fell in love with it a year or so ago when we bought a place up there. It just kind of reminded me of growing up in Australia and there was good access to the golf course. That’s what I want for the people there, to be able to have a fun, nice experience when they go out to the course and to have a welcoming experience. I know the course has a lot of history and tradition and I want to get back to that to get the course in the 18 | 2021 Brainerd Lakes Area GOLF GUIDE
best shape we can.” Ernie Rose was familiar with the Vintage only slightly before purchasing it. He says he still hasn’t played a round of golf there yet. “I have a golf academy in the cities that helps high school kids go on to play college golf, so I was aware of how good the high school team was up in StaplesMotley,” he said. “So I heard of the course and it was kind of random that we bought our property so close to the golf course and when I found it was up for sale I thought it would be a good fit to try and give back to the community a little bit.” Ernie Rose owns and is a golf instructor at his own golf academy in Eden Prairie. Prior to that, he worked at Windsong Farms Golf Club in Maple Plain. He plans to spend Memorial Day to Labor Day at a property he owns in Motley. “It’ll be fun to connect with everyone in the community and get the course in
the best shape we can,” he said. As well as having his own golf academy, Rose served as the University of Minnesota golf coach from 20072009. “We had some good years there,” he said. “We had some good teams on the men’s side and the women’s team got really good as well.” He also played competitively on the Australian Tour from 2001-2009. Rose hopes to bring his experience on tour and as a college coach at The Vintage. The Vintage is getting a new pro to take some responsibility off of long-time Vintage pro Bill Israelson. Rose said Israelson has been a good man to have around to learn about the course he just bought. “Bill is just a fun guy to be around,” Rose said. “He is so upbeat. Bill kind of told me that when he was my age he started to get involved with the course and that it was a fun career for him. It’s fun to have him around and his

the purchase as well. Katie played high school golf at Edina and her team won the state championship. How Rose met Katie was actually caddying for her dad on the Champions Tour for two years. “My wife is a very good golfer and we like to get out and play as much as we can,” Rose said. “We have four kids now, but we plan to bring all the kids out on the course this summer.” Another goal Rose has is to bring people together through golf. “When you come in The Vintage we are all the same,” Rose said. “There’s no one who is higher or lower than
knowledge and expertise.” The goal is to make The Vintage a family environment. Rose said his mom will be helping out in the clubhouse this summer. Golf is in Rose’s family as his fatherin-law is John Harris who played on the PGA Tour and has played on the Champions Tour for the past 17 years. “We have a history in our family with golf,” Rose said. “My father-in-law will spend a lot of time with our kids and teach them the game this summer on the range at The Vintage and golf is a big thing in our family.” Rose’s wife Katie played a role in
anybody else and that’s what I love about the game. We are all level and all playing the same course.” The hope is for The Vintage to become more of a destination than it already is. “We want people to come up from cities as well as from Brainerd to come play,” Rose said. “But I really want this to be a part of the community as well. We’ve had a lot of excitement from the community just from the management side.” CONRAD ENGSTROM may be reached at 218-8555861 or conrad.engstrom@brainerddispatch.com. Practice like you play Chris Foley of Chris Foley Golf Schools
Golf is one of the few games that is not practiced on the actual field of play. The majority of our practice occurs at a driving range. Most of the time the driving range has no resemblance to the golf course and this environment typically doesn’t lead to great performance on the golf course. The golf course is a one-shot environment. On the golf course, we have time between shots. Every shot we hit requires a different club to a different yardage from a different lie. On the driving range, we are typically hitting multiple shots with the same club, off of a flat surface and perfect lie. In this situation, regardless of the efficiency of our swing, at some point in the practice session, we start hitting good shot after good shot. We develop a false sense of accomplishment by finding the timing 20 | 2021 Brainerd Lakes Area GOLF GUIDE
TIPS FROM A PRO and rhythm of the swing. In the oneshot environment of the golf course, it is much harder to find that rhythm and timing. With this in mind, if we really want to play better golf, we need to practice more like we play. Part of our practice time needs to be focused on swing changes or maintenance, but we need to spend the majority of our practice time doing things to improve our performance on the golf course. To practice more like we play, we need to practice with the following things in mind. 1. The drill, game, or exercise we are doing needs to create awareness and be engaging. Things like changing targets frequently, creating
different sensations or feels, and pushing you out of your comfort zone 2. The practice needs to be measurable. When we measure our practice, it gives us a true gauge of how we are doing. From day to day we can track improvement or regression. 3. There need to be consequences in practice. We need to compete while we practice. This is what truly bridges the gap between the range and the golf course. The practice experience needs to be closer to the actual golf course experience. To take your game from the range to the golf course, keep the above elements in mind as you practice. The returns on your time in practice will be enhanced and your scores will improve.
TIPS FROM A PRO
Short bunker shot Tyler Holbrook - Assistant Golf Professional Cragun’s
If you find yourself short-sided needing to hit a high soft bunker shot, you will first need to open your stance so your shoulders are left of the target. Secondly, you will need to open the face of your wedge and have the ball positioned forward in your stance. Lastly, you will want to hit about three inches behind the ball, this will loft the ball higher in the air and should have some spin on it to make it land softly. Good luck and have a great 2021 golf season.

Hit or swing? Dave Sadlowsky, PGA Golf Professional, Ruttger’s Bay Lake Resort
Is it called a golf hit or a golf swing? Of course, we all know the answer to that question, but what is it that you actually do? One of my most famous students was a very accomplished NFL defensive back that struggled with errant golf shots. Obviously, he was very strong and very flexible, but had the mentality of hitting at the ball instead of swinging through the ball toward his target. As I contemplated how I was going to help this three-time
TIPS FROM A PRO Pro Bowl player, I asked him about his mentality when making a tackle. I asked: ”Do you stop as soon as you make contact with your opponent?” “No,” he said, “I run all the way through him and drive him to the ground.” Voila…Just the answer I was hoping for. Think about all the other actions we
perform like throwing a ball, kicking a ball, or casting a fishing rod. In every case, we accelerate our physical motion through the release/impact toward our target. Now think about a check swing in baseball. Does the ball go very far? Nope. Does it always stay within the field of play? Nope. You get the picture. Now get out and take advantage of the great golf opportunities in the Brainerd lakes area and swing THROUGH the ball toward your target.
Drive for show and putt for dough James Carlson, PGA Director of Golf Operations, Minnesota National Golf Club and Resort Become a great putter by creating topspin on your putts. To create more topspin: 1) Create a negative loft on your putter. Most putters have at least 4 degrees of loft, reduce this loft by forward pressing the grip. You have it correct when you cannot see the face of your putter. 2) Take a short backswing and accelerate through the ball, decelerating your stroke increases the chance of the ball bouncing (see below). 3) Finish with a good follow-through, your hands should stay in front of the putter head throughout the stroke. A good followthrough is getting your left hand past 22 | 2021 Brainerd Lakes Area GOLF GUIDE
TIPS FROM A PRO your left leg before the putter head. Imagine your left leg is against a wall, your hands should hit the wall before the putter head. Creating topspin on your putts will help your golf ball stay on line, go for the hole and roll out more consistently. It will also reduce the chance of your ball bouncing, dramatically increasing the amount of break. If the ball starts bouncing it also creates drag, leaving putts well short of your intended target.
Then, practice making putts. We have all seen it, players, out on the practice green, hitting monster putts from hole to hole, or even 10 to 20 footers, very seldom to never making a putt. This does not build confidence. I suggest lining up balls 3 feet from the hole and then practice making putts. This builds confidence. If you know you can make a 3-footer, now you have a six-foot circle around the hole to lag to, increasing your chances of two-putting. Once you can make them all at 3 feet, move on to 4 feet and even 5 feet. Then you will become a great putter.

Putting
Start from the finish to fix your flaws
Terry Thompson, Cuyuna Rolling Hills
Bill Israelson, The Vintage Golf Club
In order to be good at putting, it is important to do several things.
My favorite tip for my High School golfers is to make a swing like a good golfer and stick the follow-through until the ball lands.
When your ball is on the green, it helps to develop a consistent routine. First, you want to put a marker behind your golf ball and pick it up. Look over your ball and clean it if it is dirty. Now examine the putt, look at it from all angles, and try to determine if there is going to be any break. Walk between your ball and the hole trying to feel for any angle, making sure not to walk in your putt line. Fix any ball marks between your ball and the hole. Look at the direction the grass is laying on the green, which could help with speed or possibly some break.
This swing tip helps them get instant feedback on how their balance, body and clubface are rotating through impact and into the target. This tip also helps them understand for themselves what they want to feel in their golf swing so they can fix it when out playing. I always remind them, “the best coach is you.”
After you have determined your putt line, place your ball back on the green, use the marks or lines on your golf ball to aim your putt. On longer putts or putts where there is a lot of break, you should pick out a specific spot on the green to hit your ball to. If it is a perfectly straight putt that would be the hole. If your ball is going to break two feet, pick out a spot two feet from the hole. On longer putts, it should be your goal to get the golf ball within three feet of the hole. On short putts, it is important to hit your ball firm. Perfect speed on a short putt would mean the ball would go about two feet past the hole. Also, when putting, make sure you do the same thing every time. For example, feet the same width apart, location of the ball between your stance, consistent putter stroke. If you have lined up your ball for aim, make sure your line on your putter is lined up with the ball. If you have everything lined up this allows you to focus more on distance.
A warm-up routine Dan Loken, Emily Greens
I always recommend when going out to play you should always stretch your back by doing some simple back twisting swings without a ball. This simple act will loosen and stretch your back and other muscles. Then go to the driving range and hit a few balls using a tee. Using a tee helps groove your swing faster and gives you more confidence in your swing. It is best to start with a short iron and move to the longer clubs to best prepare yourself for the first tee. This will make for a better routine and give you more confidence as you go on the course. How often have you played a round of golf where you got to the fifth tee and said to yourself ‘Now I feel loose and can really start hitting the ball’. Think about that for a

TIPS FROM A PRO moment – Why not take 10-15 minutes before playing to have that feeling on the first tee Golf is a game we play to have fun. We all get a little more enjoyment by hitting good shots and getting a good score (‘good’ being a relative term to each golfers’ ability). By stretching, loosening up, and grooving your swing, you are more prepared to have a little more success from the first ball you hit on the course. A few better shots, a few better scores, throw in playing with a few good friends or family and it brings us right back to our motto at Emily Greens – It is all about fun on the golf course.

Do not How to play in the wind ignore the flat stick Bennett Smed, Head Teaching Professional at Madden’s
One of the biggest variables that can hurt players’ scores is wind, so here is an easy way to navigate iron shots that play into the breeze. Start by taking one extra club (if the shot is normally an 8, grab a 7), move the ball an inch or two back of center in your stance, and swing with about 80% power. The lower loft of the club will take off the necessary spin, and the smoother tempo will improve contact and consistency.
Nolan Toft Head Golf Professional, Breezy Point Resort After the off-season, it always seems the biggest thing to deteriorate is our short game, especially chipping and pitching. Although there are many different styles of how to chip and pitch the golf ball, I find one piece to be universal and effective to improve solid contact more often, and that is proper weight placement on the lead foot. Whether the miss is thin or fat, I often see similar movement into the golf ball. A player sets up with 60+% of their weight on their trail foot (right foot for a right-handed player) and relies on their hands to get the club back to the ball, resulting in a flip that bottoms out early and comes up short or catches the middle of the ball and is bladed over the green. A great drill to improve this is to simply hit shots with the majority of your weight on the lead foot (left foot for a righthanded player). By majority, I’m always looking at 70+ percent. To get here easily, one can simply lift the trailing heel keeping light pressure only on the toes of that foot and then rocking the shoulders back and through focusing only on solid contact that leads into distance control. Whether it’s a chip or a pitch, when you head to the short game area to practice this season think weight forward for solid contact.

CROSSWOODS GOLF COURSE – Family Golf at its Finest Imagine a golf career with 20 holes in one! That’s the bragging rights Crosswoods Golf Pro Tim Trott can claim. Just one of the professionals on staff at Crosswoods, Trott is in his fifth season at the course after spending 10 years on and off at Golden Eagle. Trott grew up in Brainerd and says he played baseball. In a roundabout way it’s what brought him to golf. He says when he suffered a knee injury playing baseball, a physical therapist suggested he take up golf. He told him walking on the turf could help him during his recovery. “I thought it was a silly game at first,” he says, “But once he started to play, he found he really enjoyed it. Trott attended college at the San Diego Golf Academy and in 1996 he and his wife moved back to Brainerd. Trott enjoys working at Crosswoods and says owner Mike Stone works to make sure they have one of the best places to play in the country, staying on the forefront of technology and growing the teaching program at the course. “This is the fifth season that we’ve had 27 holes,” says Trott. It’s kind of unique having a 27-hole course but it’s fun because we always have a place to put somebody.” This year a new fleet of carts with GPS are on the way to the course that will be user friendly for golfers and speed up the play on the course. Trott is especially excited for the FlightScope technology the course has started to use. “I’m a little old school,” he says about his teaching style. ”I like to go out and watch my student hit some balls and see what they’re doing and then go from there, but this monitor is a great tool.” The data from FlightScope means instructors can spend more time working with the clients. “It’s kind of exciting. I can find out in five swings what we need to work on and then I can spend 40 minutes working with a student versus the 20 I had before.”
“Last year was one of the busiest seasons teaching that I’ve ever had,” says Trott. “We saw a lot of first timers to the course that decided to take instruction so they could do it right. You couldn’t play some of the other summer sports last year, but you could play golf. We saw a lot of families golfing together.” Owner Mike Stone is known for having one of the first golf courses open in the area. “He will go out and plow snow off the entire Sunset 9. For three week we’re one of the only courses open. When people come out, they’re happy. They’re outdoors again, ” said Trott. “In the fall Mike will stay open until there’s too much snow.” The professional with 20 holes-in-one shares some of his favorite places to play at Crosswoods. “On 7 High Noon there are two greens which is kind of unique. It’s a par 5. You can choose which green to play before tee-off. The one to the right is a huge green hidden over a water hazard. The one to the left is straightforward. It’s unique that you have that choice.” Sunrise Hole number 5 is probably Trott’s favorite hole, he says. It’s a par three but he says he likes the little green complex because it is framed by a little lake behind it. “There are always swans and loons back there,” he said. This year Crosswoods has added Srixon rental sets to its offerings in the pro shop. Golfer Hideki Matsuyama used those clubs to win the Masters title. When you’re up at Crosswoods, make sure to enjoy some time off the course at the Crosswoods Grill overlooking the course and waterfall garden. Trott says the staff and the members at the course have a family feel. When he started at Crosswoods he says it wasn’t long until he felt like part of that family. “At the end of the day we don’t want anyone going away unhappy. We want them having a good time while they’re here and we do a fairly good job of that I think,” said Trott.
