In 2011, the much anticipated “The Greatest 100 Players in Minnesota High School History” was published. Mike Randolph made the list for his 4 year varsity career as a “Hustling, high scoring forward” at Duluth Cathedral. Randolph played in 4 straight Private School State Championship games. The Hilltoppers won 3 State Titles.
After High School Randolph played Junior Hockey in Canada and was invited to play on the 1976 US Olympic team. While he was one of the team’s leading scorers, he became the last player cut days before the team left Helsinki Finland for the games in Innsbruck, Austria. With his playing days behind him, Randolph
spent 6 years coaching at the collegiate level with the St Scholastica Saints ( NAIA National Champions 1977 ) and the UMD Bulldogs.
In 1986, he was the varsity assistant for the Denfeld Hunters when they took 3rd place in the State Tournament. His coaching legacy began in earnest when he became the head coach of the Duluth East Greyhounds. Over his 32 years at East the Hounds became one of the premier programs in the state. East Played in 8 state championship games, winning the State title in 1995 and 1998.
In all, Coach Randolph has been in 24 section finals winning the section and going to state 19 times. His team has
taken home hardware on 16 of those trips. He has coached over 50 D-1 hockey players, including 7 who have played in the NHL.
Mike Randolph was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2018. On February 26, 2024, Randolph earned win number 717 to tie him for the all-time record. His greatest statistic is not measurable but the most impressive of all. He consistently receives texts and calls from players across 46 years of coaching wishing him the best in his storied career. This season the calls and text messages will only increase as: Each Northern Lakes win will be record setting. Coach Randolph remains as enthusiastic about coaching the Lightning as he was when he was skating as a kid at Lower Chester Park in central Duluth.
ASSISTANT COACH TOM KLEIN
Tom Klein’s greatest memory as a player is limited to one play in an hour-long scrimmage. He stopped the All-American, 3 time leading scorer and senior captain on a breakaway during the UW-River Falls tryouts.
He tried out for the D-3 team following a season of playing Jr Hockey.
The harsh reality of being cut served to fuel TK’s passion to learn as much about the game as he possibly could so he could develop and stay in the game as a coach.
To this end, 4 times he has participated in a small gathering of coaches for 3 days to listen to the winning NCAA Championship coach. These seminars included Herb Brooks (1976) Bob Johnson (1977) and Len Ceglarski (1978).
In 1979 he attended a seminar with Anatoly Tarasov, the Father of Russian Hockey.
TK spent 14 off-seasons working with Minnesota North Stars Skating coach
Dick Vraa. During this time he also worked with Head Coach Glen Sonmor and numerous NHL players including Bobby Smith, JP Parise, Tom Reid, Brad Maxwell and Al McAdam.
Klein has attended International Coaching Symposiums in Toronto, Saint John, Vancouver and Montreal. While all of this has contributed to his overall understanding of the game, no one has had a greater influence on his approach to coaching goalies than former pro-goalie Dave Tataryn. TK spent time during 2 summers watching Tataryn coach elite goalies.
TK has coached 10 D-1 skaters, 5 of which were drafted by and played in NHL farm systems. When it comes to the net, he has coached 11 D-1 goalies including 3 that were either drafted or signed with NHL teams.
TK has served as both a Head Coach (20 years) and as an Assistant (28 years). He has coached with and against some of the greatest high school coaches in the
game. Klein has coached in 14 Section Championship games advancing to the State tournament 3 times.
He was part of the varsity staff when BSM took 3rd in 2008 and won the AA State Championship in 2012.
TK describes his experience in the game as “Blessed to work with and be mentored by very elite players and talented coaches. Tom Klein was inducted into the MHCA Hall of Fame in 2020.
When Mike Randolph became the head coach at St. Thomas Academy, TK was the first person he called to join him. The two had coached against each other for many years.
Randolph’s Hound’s beat Klein’s Skippers in the 1994 State Quarter Finals.
When Mike became the Lightning head coach, Klein was so glad to continue working as his assistant as he believes Randolph is the most knowledgeable and tactically sound coach in high school hockey.
TK believes he and Mike could not have landed in a better program than Northern Lakes!

GOOD LUCK LIGHTNING!
THE BLUE LINE CLUB
The Blue Line Club (BLC) is the booster club for our boys high school hockey team. The BLC has been supporting boys' high school hockey since the co-op was created with Aitkin, Crosby-Ironton, Pequot Lakes and Pine River-Backus schools in 1999. We are a volunteer-run, nonprofit organization that operates year-round to help provide an opportunity for high school aged boys in our communities to continue to play hockey once they have aged out of
the youth association. In order to provide affordable opportunities for our boys, we host a number of fundraising events; highlights of our fundraising efforts for the 2024-2025 season include:
• Big Cash Raffle
• Pucktoberfest
• Game Program Ad Sales
Our fundraising dollars go towards player equipment, pre-season ice time, jerseys, away game meals, coach buses for away games,
team building opportunities, senior player recognition, team apparel, and more. Thanks to your ongoing commitment to our boys, they are given the opportunity to play the sport they love. If you have specific questions about how our funds are being used, or if you would like further information on how to continue your support, please don’t hesitate to email us at nlhockeyblc@gmail.com.
