The Cuyuna Lakes Area’s history is deeply rooted in the mining industry, particularly in the extraction of iron ore. From the early 1900s to the mid-20th century, the region was a hub for iron ore mining, which significantly impacted the area’s development and culture. The mine pit lakes, now renowned for recreational activities such as scuba diving and kayaking, were formed as a result of the mining operations. These pristine lakes stand as a testament to the area’s mining heritage and the resilience of nature in reclaiming the land.
One of the most tragic events in the history of the Cuyuna Lakes Area was the Milford Mine disaster in 1924. This devastating mining accident resulted in the loss of 41 miners’ lives. The Milford Mine Memorial Park serves as a poignant and respectful tribute to the miners and a reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of valuable resources.
In addition to its mining legacy, the Cuyuna Lakes Area has a unique connection to
high-altitude exploration. The “Man High” project, conducted in the area, contributed to pioneering research on the effects of high-altitude flight on humans. This groundbreaking project laid the foundation for advancements in space exploration and high-altitude scientific research.
Furthermore, the Cuyuna Lakes Area was once home to the headquarters of Scorpion snowmobiles, a prominent brand in the 1960s and 1970s. The legacy of Scorpion snowmobiles is celebrated in the area, with enthusiasts and historians alike honoring the brand’s impact on the snowmobiling industry through local events and museum exhibitions.
Want to learn more?
The Soo Line Museum is a key attraction in the Cuyuna Lakes Area, showcasing the region’s connection to the Soo Line Railroad and its role in transporting iron ore. Visitors can explore the area’s mining heritage, learn about the Milford Mine disaster, and discover the “Man High” project and the legacy of Scorpion snowmobiles.
The museum features mining history exhibits, including a life-sized replica of the capsule Dr. David Simons rode to the stratosphere, as well as 100-year-old tools and photographs of miners and mines that shaped the region. Notably, it is recognized in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” as the only depot in the world where trains arrived but never passed through.

After checking out the local culture and traditions, why not treat the family to a fun day at a nearby park or playground? It’s a great chance to enjoy some quality time together—playing outdoor games, having a picnic, or just taking a nice stroll around. If it’s too chilly outside, no worries! You can head over to Cuyuna Brewing, where you can sip on some delicious craft brews while having fun with the games they have set up.
Before departing, take a scenic drive around the Cuyuna Lakes Area to admire the natural beauty and perhaps stop for a family photoshoot at one of the picturesque spots.
The Cuyuna Country is home to nearly 6,000 year-round residents and thousands more seasonal residents and visitors. Nestled among more than 500 pristine lakes, outdoor activities abound in the Cuyuna and Brainerd Lakes areas. The Twin Cities are only a two-hour drive away. The Brainerd Regional Airport provides flights and offers free parking with no TSA lines. Many residents live on the surrounding lakes. There are no traffic jams on the drive home, so you can spend that time outdoors or with family and friends. Living here is like being at a resort that you never have to leave.
Crosby is home to Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, a growing campus offering full medical services, including a 25-bed critical access hospital, a state-of-the-art surgery center, physician clinic with numerous specialists, pharmacy, transitional and extended care. The hospital is a regional center for advanced general, orthopedic, and gynecologic surgery.
The area is also home to Graphic Packaging, a leading provider of packaging solutions from cartons to machinery, for food, beverage, and other consumer products companies around the world. Magnum Machinery, which has offered world-class CNC machining since 1994, is another large employer.
The Crosby-Ironton Independent School District offers first-rate academics, cuttingedge technology, and outstanding extracurricular activities. Its faculty and staff are dedicated to preparing students for lifelong success and work hard to cultivate schools where students embrace growth.
There are several houses of worship in the area. Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, as well as non-ecumenical churches are available. Grocery and liquor stores, fuel stations, antique and retail shops, as well as restaurants, coffee shops, a brewery, cocktail lounge, and gift shops offer everything families need.
