WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX
“Things Heard & Seen” (2021)
Put your senses to the test with the new film “Things Heard & Seen,” premiering Friday, April 30, on Netflix. After trading in her bustling Manhattan lifestyle for the slow and simple pace of the Hudson Valley, artist Catherine Clare (Amanda Seyfried, “Dear John,” 2010) begins to suspect something more sinister than simple small-town charm is living within her house. Worse still, the dark force seems to be living inside something much more precious to her as well: her marriage to husband, George (James Norton, “War & Peace”). As the Shari Springer Berman and Rovert Pulcini (“American Splendor,” 2003) film progresses, Catherine begins to wonder if maybe the two are in some way connected. Based on the American gothic horror novel “All Things Cease to Appear” by Elizabeth Brundage, “Things Heard & Seen” also stars Rhea Seehorn (“Better Call Saul”), Ana Sophia Heger (“Life in Pieces”), Natalia Dyer (“Stranger Things”), F. Murray Abraham (“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” 2014) and Karen Allen (“Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark,” 1981).
“The Mitchells vs The Machines” (2021)
Family means never having to … look up from your phones?
Get reconnected with the new animated film “The Mitchells vs The Machines” when it premieres Friday, April 30, on Netflix. A happygo-lucky daddy’s girl as a child, Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson, “Broad City”) is all grown up and ready to leave for college. Ecstatic that she gets to live away from her family for the first time ever (and for a whole year at that!),
Katie cannot wait until her dad, Rick (Danny McBride, “Pineapple
Express,” 2008), drops her off at the airport. Little does she know, Rick has canceled her flight and vows to drop her off at school — on the other side of the country — only after the whole family reconnects on the car ride along the way. With her mom (Maya Rudolph, “The Willoughbys,” 2020), her brother, Aaron (Michael Rianda, “Gravity Falls”), and Monchi the pug (Doug the Pug, “Sanders Shorts”) along for the ride, family time seems like the worst thing Katie could be forced to endure. That is, until the machines start an uprising against humankind. Directed by Rianda and Jeff Rowe (“Disenchantment”), this uniquely animated adventure flick also features the voices of comedy big wigs Conan O’Brien (“Conan Without Borders”), Fred Armisen (“Los Espookys”), Eric André (“The Eric Andre Show”), Beck Bennett (“Saturday Night Live”) and Hollywood power couple John Legend (“La La Land,” 2016) and Chrissy Teigen (“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” 2018).
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU
“The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 4
Blessed be! Season 4 of “A Handmaid’s Tale” is premiering on Hulu on Wednesday, April 28. Based on the popular dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, this series stars Elizabeth Moss (“The Invisible Man,” 2020) as a woman formerly named June, who is forced to join a new, “improved” society as one of the handmaids to an affluent couple — a woman whose sole purpose is to bear the child of the master for whom she is renamed. Across the three previous seasons, June has seen several names changes, lost and found friends and family, relived past experiences, endured torture and been forced to submit to the highly religious method of governance that now rules what used to be the United States. Created by
Bruce Miller (“ER”), the first three episodes of the fourth season will launch on the network on April 28, followed by a weekly release of a new episode every Wednesday for the remaining seven weeks. The series also stars Yvonne Strahovski (“Chuck”), Joseph Fiennes (“Shakespeare in Love,” 1998), Ann Dowd (“Hereditary,” 2018) and Amanda Brugel (“Kim’s Convenience”).
“Wild Mountain Thyme” (2020)
Get caught up in an Irish-American love triangle when John Patrick Shanley’s (“Moonstruck,” 1987) newest film, “Wild Mountain Thyme,” lands on Hulu on Sunday, April 25. Based on Shanley’s play “Outside Mullingar,” the film chronicles headstrong farmer Rosemary Muldoon’s (Emily Blunt, “The Devil Wears Prada,” 2006) unwavering love for her neighbor, Anthony (Jamie Dornan, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” 2015). Since they were children — played by Abigail Coburn (“The Professor and the Madman,” 2019) and Darragh
O’Kane (“Somebody’s Child: Jungle,” 2019) — Rosemary has been trying to show her affection for Anthony, hoping it would one day be reciprocated. Instead, when Anthony’s cousin Adam (Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”) comes to visit from the United States with plans of buying the family farm, Rosemary finds herself drawn to the man’s openness and attraction to her. Needless to say, this causes a bit of upset where Anthony is concerned. Filmed in County Mayo, Ireland, “Wild Mountain Thyme” also stars Christopher Walken (“Catch Me If You Can,” 2002), Lydia McGuinness (“Sing Street,” 2016), Dearbhla Molloy (“No Reservations,” 2007)
and Clare Barrett (“Run & Jump,” 2013).
“Arrival” (2016)
Hulu is bringing interspecies communication to a whole new level when the streaming service adds the hit 2016 film “Arrival” to its roster on Wednesday, April 28. When a mysterious pod touches down on Earth, linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams, “Doubt,” 2008) is called in to help forge a relationship between humans and the new creatures. Using all of the tools in her linguistic toolbox, Banks races against time to decode the message being transmitted to her by the new beings. When she and her cohorts, Col. Webber (Forest Whitaker, “The Last King of Scotland,” 2006) and Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner, “The Hurt Locker,” 2008), learn that more of these mysterious pods are landing at various locations all around the world, Banks takes a chance and puts her life in danger to potentially save everyone else on Earth. Directed by French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario,” 2015) and based on the novella “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang, “Arrival” also stars Tzi Ma (“Mulan,” 2020), Michael Stuhlbarg (“The Shape of Water,” 2017) and Mark O’Brien (“City on a Hill”).
WHAT’S NEW ON DISNEY+ “DuckTales” Season 3
Prepare yourself to “quack up” laughing with the whole family when Season 3 of “DuckTales” reaches Disney+ on Friday, April 30. Scrooge McDuck (David Tennant, “Dr. Who”) is back with his grandnephews, Huey (Danny Pudi, “Community”), Dewey (Ben Schwartz, “Parks and Recreation”) and Louie
(Bobby Moynihan, “Saturday Night Live”), to seek out various treasures and stop a smattering of villains from stealing his own private fortune. With McDuck’s own nephew, Donald Duck (Tony Anselmo, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” 1988), helping out along the way, these cartoon fowl run amuck with friends Webby Vanderquack (Kate Minucci, “Steven Universe”), Launchpad McQuack (Beck Bennett, “Sing,” 2016) and Mrs. Beakley (Toks Olagundoye, “Castle”) while trying to accomplish all sorts of quirky missions. This reboot of the DuckTales franchise, created by Francisco Angones (“Wander Over Yonder”) and Matt Youngberg (“Teen Titans”), boasts an impressive 69 20-minute episodes over its three seasons, with 22 of them in Season 3.
WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME
“Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” (2021)
There’s a new, action-packed Tom Clancy adaptation coming to Prime on Friday, April 30, and it’s bound to get your heart pumping. “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse,” the newest film in the author’s Jack Ryan universe, stars Michael B. Jordan (“Creed,” 2015) as John Kelly, a Navy SEAL who goes on a revenge spree after the murder of his pregnant wife (Lauren London, “I Love You, Beth Cooper,” 2009). Banding together with fellow SEAL
Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith, “Queen & Slim,” 2019) and CIA Agent Ritter (Jamie Bell, “Jumper,” 2008), Kelly quickly uncovers a sinister and deadly plot against the United States deeper down the rabbit hole and decides that finding the criminals behind the attack on his wife and unborn child is just beginning of his mission. Now with a bigger crisis on his hands, Kelly uses his personal vendetta to fuel his overall quest for justice. Written by Will Staples (“The Right Stuff,” 2020) and Taylor Sheridan (“Hell
or High Water,” 2016) and directed by “Gomorrah’s” Stefano Sollima, “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” also stars Guy Pearce (“Momento,” 2000), Colman Domingo (“Selma,” 2014) and Cam Gigandet (“Never Back Down,” 2008).
“Barry Munday” (2010)
There’s a series of unfortunate events coming to Prime this week, but it isn’t of the Lemony Snicket variety. The comedic film “Barry Munday” joins the platform on Wednesday, April 28, and, boy, has the title character ever had a bad day! Disgruntled in life, aging quicker than he’d care to admit and only “OK” at his job, Barry Munday (Patrick Wilson, “Insidious,” 2010) has just awoken to find that he’s been attacked. To make matters worse, he appears to be missing a valued couple of pieces of his masculinity. The cherry on top of the cake — because how could things get any worse? — Barry has just been informed that he is going to be the father to a baby whose mother he doesn’t even remember sleeping with. The mother of the child, Ginger Farley (Judy Greer, “27 Dresses,” 2008), a conservative and solitary woman, invites Barry to become as involved in the pregnancy as he’d like, and so he proceeds to meet her family — including her father (Malcolm McDowell, “A Clockwork Orange,” 1971) and her attractive, more sultry younger sister, Jennifer (Chloë Sevigny, “We Are Who We Are”) — and attend her medical appointments with her. The only question is, with all of this happening in Barry’s life at once, can he handle the responsibility? Written and directed by Chris D’Arienzo (“Rock of Ages,” 2012) and based on the book “Life Is a Strange Place: A Novel” by Frank Turner Hollon, “Barry Munday” also stars Jean Smart (“24”) and Billy Dee Williams (“Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back,” 1980).
