Thatmagical time of year is almost here, and TV fans are in for some fresh treats at last. After months of reruns and binge watching, it’s finally time for new TV series to pop up in prime time.
While there may not be as many productions as usual for this year’s fall TV harvest, there are still some choice offerings. Cable channels are ready to duke it out for ratings with their own original programming, and he major networks have secured a mix of dramas, a comedy and even a game show.
HBO will be out of the gate early with the premiere of “We Are Who We Are,” on Monday, Sept. 14. The drama from Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me By Your Name,” 2017) examines modern teen angst set against the backdrop of an American military base in Italy in 2016. It stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“It,” 2017) as Fraser, a shy teenager who moves from New York to the base.
AMC hopes to continue the suc cess of its The Walking Dead fran chise with “The Walking Dead: World Beyond,” scheduled to pre miere Sunday, Oct. 4. The series had been slated to premiere in April, but AMC changed its plans when COV ID-19 forced the industry-wide shut down, opting instead to save it for its fall schedule. Set 10 years after the advent of the apocalypse, the show follows sisters Iris (Aliyah Royale,

The scoop on TV’s new fall shows
“The Red Line”) and Hope (Alexa Mansour, “Loco Love,” 2017) and two friends who leave a place of safety on a quest.
There’s no doubt that the COVID-19 shutdown has had an impact on television productions, many of which were forced to close up shop in March. However, industry pundits remain optimistic, including the folks at Fox, who are planning to welcome three notable new series to their prime-time lineup this fall.
“Now, more than ever, consistency, results and stability take on an allnew emphasis,” Fox executive Marianne Gambelli said. “Fox is primed and ready for the fall with a great deal of stability across our entire pro-
network’s newly acquired “L.A.’s Finest,” scheduled to make its network television debut on Monday, Sept. 21. The police drama from Hollywood bigwig Jerry Bruckheimer is a spinoff of his big-screen Bad Boys franchise. “L.A.’s Finest” follows “Bad Boy” Marcus Burnett’s sister, Syd (Union), and her new LAPD partner, Nancy (Alba). It’s important to note that the show isn’t entirely new, but it’s new to Fox. Its first season aired on the cable channel Spectrum. Fox does have two completely new series this fall — “Filthy Rich” and “Next.” Premiering right after “L.A.’s Finest” on Monday, Sept. 21, “Filthy Rich” stars Kim Cattrall (“Sex in the City”) as wealthy widow Mar-
them into his will, threatening her hold on the family fortune.
Fox’s thriller “Next” is set to premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 6. It stars John Slatterly (“Mad Men”) as Silicon Valley pioneer Paul LeBlanc. When he discovers that an artificial intelligence that he created could be a threat to the human race, he works alongside Homeland Cybersecurity agent Shea Salazar (Fernanda Andrade, “Fallen”) to stop it.
CBS has plans for two new series this fall — one comedy and one drama — although neither has a concrete premiere date as of yet. The network’s “B Positive” is the only network television comedy scheduled to make its debut this fall. Chuck Lorre (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Marco Pennette (“Inconceivable”) serve as executive producers on the series about Drew (Thomas Middleditch, “Silicon Valley”), a newly divorced dad who discovers he needs a kidney transplant. Luckily, a woman from his past, Gina (Annaleigh Ashford, “Masters of Sex”), agrees to donate hers.
None other than Queen Latifah (“Chicago,” 2002) helms a reboot of the classic TV series “The Equalizer” for CBS. She stars as Robyn McCall, a mysterious woman who uses her unique skill set to help those who have no one else to turn to in this reimagining of the show that ran from 1985 to 1989. As in the original series, the Equalizer, as McCall is known, is a vigilante for justice. Chris Noth (“Law & Order”) and Lorraine Toussaint (“Orange Is the New Black”) also star.

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX “Away”
While many people may be joking about wanting to get on a spaceship to Mars in order to escape the chaotic state of the world right now, on Friday, Sept. 4, Netflix follows an international team of astronauts as they head off on their own mission to Mars in this series premiere. Hilary Swank (“Million Dollar Baby,” 2004) stars as American astronaut Emma Green. A former pilot in the navy and now the commander of the space mission, Emma is first and foremost a wife to her husband, Matt (Josh Charles, “The Good Wife”), and mother to her daughter, Lex (Talitha Bateman, “Love, Simon,” 2018). Unlike many space dramas that focus on various extraterrestrial creatures, “Away” focuses more on the struggles of maintaining interpersonal relationships, both between the crew members and within the families they leave behind. Emma isn’t the only one with family back on Earth. The rest of the crew — Russian engineer Misha Popov (Mark Ivanir, “Homeland”), Indian fighter pilot Ram Arya (Ray Panthaki, “Marcella”), Chinese chemist Lu Wang (Vivian Wu, “Knock Out,” 2020) and British botanist Kwesi Weisberg-Adebayo (Ato
Essandoh, “Chicago Med”) — have loved ones that they are missing and struggling to keep in contact with, despite the (literal) space between them. From the creators of “Penny Dreadful,” “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood,” don’t miss this emotional new series when it premieres this Friday.
“I’m Thinking of Ending Things” (2020)
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Canadian author Iain Reid, Academy Award-winning director Charlie Kaufman (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” 2004) explores the complex nature of relationships and the human spirit in this film, premiering Friday, Sept. 4, on Netflix. Jessie Buckley (“Wild Rose,” 2018) stars as the girlfriend of a man named Jake (Jesse Plemons, “Game Night,” 2018), whom she has every intention of dumping. Despite her plans to end their relationship, she reluctantly agrees to go on a trip to his family farm and meet his mother (Toni Collette, “Knives Out,” 2019) and father (David Thewlis, “Wonder Woman,” 2017). Things quickly go sideways as a sudden snowstorm leaves them unable to return home. Though she can’t discern why, she finds Jake’s family unnerving, and the more time she spends with them, the more she
begins to question everything she knows.
WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME
“The Boys” Season 2
Billy Butcher (Karl Urban, “RED,” 2010), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid, “Rampage,” 2018), Frenchie (Tomer Capon, “Combat Medics”), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso, “The Mysteries of Laura”) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara, “Suicide Squad,” 2016) are back for another exciting season of this unique superhero series, premiering Friday, Sept. 4, on Prime. Season 1 brought viewers into a world where superheroes, aka “supes,” are revered by the public, but when Hughie’s girlfriend is accidentally killed by a team of famous superheroes known as the Seven, it becomes clear to him that these supes aren’t nearly as heroic as they lead people to believe. It’s soon revealed that the Seven work for a corporation called Vought, and saving people is far from their first priority. Upon learning all of this, Hughie teams up with Butcher, Frenchie, Mother’s Milk and Kimiko, a ragtag group of killers determined to bring down Vought and the Seven. Each member of the team has their own skillset and motivation for wanting to bring down the Seven — Kimiko was experimented on as part of an effort to create superpowered terrorists; Frenchie is a French weapons expert; Mother’s Milk is a mercenary; and Butcher is an assassin with a vendetta against Homelander (Antony Starr, “Outrageous Fortune”), the leader of the Seven, who he believes raped and killed his wife. Season 2 picks up after the epic Season 1 finale that changed everything, as it was revealed that Butcher’s wife is not only alive but
raising a superpowered son. Now, despite being on the run from the Seven, Butcher, Hughie and the gang are devising a plan to get Butcher’s wife back, but a new supe named Stormfront (Aya Cash, “You’re the Worst”) could cause problems for both them and the Seven.
“Primal” (2019)
Nicolas Cage (“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” 2010) stars as professional hunter and procurer of rare animals Frank Walsh in this action film coming to Prime on Monday, Aug. 31. Walsh’s latest expedition takes him deep into the Brazilian rainforest in search of an elusive white jaguar known as the “ghost cat,” which he intends to sell to a zoo for an obscene amount of money. To the amazement of his colleagues, Walsh actually manages to capture the great cat. Unfortunately for him, his contacts refuse to help transport it back to the United States due to their belief that bad luck follows the jaguar and those who hunt it. As a result, Walsh is forced to find accommodation for himself and his animals on a cargo ship. However, he soon finds out that he isn’t the only passenger, as notorious criminal Richard Loffler (Kevin Durand, “The Strain”) is also being transported by a swarm of armed guards and Dr. Ellen Taylor (Famke Janssen, “Hemlock Grove”), a neurologist. Chaos ensues on board when Loffler manages to escape and decides to set free all of Walsh’s animals.
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU
“Casino Royale” (2006)
Daniel Craig’s (“Logan Lucky,” 2017) run as the iconic MI6 agent James Bond, aka 007, begins in this spy film
first mission, Bond and his boss, M (Judi Dench, “Murder on the Orient Express,” 2017), become aware of a secret organization called Quantum that has eyes and ears everywhere ... even within MI6. When the group attempts to assassinate M, Bond helps her to escape and begins investigating Quantum. He soon learns that everything leads back to one man:
coming to Hulu on Monday, Aug. 31. Based on British author Ian Fleming’s novel of the same name, this installment of the franchise returns to the beginning of Bond’s illustrious career as he receives his “license to kill” and is assigned his first mission. The mission takes Bond to Montenegro, where a private banker for terrorists, named Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen, “Hannibal”), has organized a highstakes game of Texas Hold ‘em poker in order to win back money he lost from his clients. Bond enters into the tournament on behalf of MI6, who hope that if Le Chiffre loses, he will trade information on his clients to the British government in exchange for protection. Partnered with Vesper Lynd (Eva Green, “Dumbo,” 2019), an MI6 treasury agent, Bond faces all sorts of danger as his mission escalates far beyond a simple game of poker. As his mission goes on, Bond comes to learn the most important rule of being a spy: trust no one.
“Quantum of Solace” (2008)
On Monday, Aug. 31, Craig’s second Bond film also joins the Hulu lineup. Following the events of his
Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric, “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” 2014), a famous developer of ecological technology. Greene, as it turns out, is working with a Bolivian general to stage a coup in exchange for a portion of seemingly barren desert in Bolivia. While Bond works to stop Greene, he meets Camille (Olga Kurylenko, “The Room,” 2019), Greene’s girlfriend, who mistakes him for someone else and tries to kill him. Little does Bond know that Camille is working from the inside to get revenge on the Bolivian general for murdering her family.
“The Courier” (2019)
Gary Oldman (“The Dark Knight Rises,” 2012) stars as Ezekiel Mannings, a powerful crime lord, in this action film coming to Hulu on Monday, Aug. 31. Knowing that the police are closing in on him, Mannings puts a plan into action to save himself. Special
Agent Roberts (Dermot Mulroney, “The Wedding Date,” 2005) has been trying to bring down Mannings for ages, and now that he has him, he’s determined to put him away for good. Unfortunately, his entire case against Mannings relies on the testimony of Nick Murch (Amit Shah, “Last Christmas,” 2019), an eyewitness who has been put in witness protection. When a courier (Olga Kurylenko, “Quantum of Solace,” 2008) delivers a package to the safe house where Nick is being kept, someone tries to kill her, and she discovers that the package could have ruined Roberts’ entire plan. In that moment, she knows that Nick isn’t safe where he is, since Mannings has people everywhere, and she takes it upon herself to protect him.

Back in session ‘A.P. Bio’ returns, but not to network television
By Rachel Jones TV Media
The critically acclaimed NBC TV series “A.P. Bio” may not have amassed a large enough audience to stay on network television after its second season, but fans can breathe a sigh of relief: the series created by former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Mike O’Brien is not over yet. It returns Thursday, Sept. 3, on NBC Universal’s new streaming service, Peacock.
The story of Jack Carson Griffin (Glenn Howerton, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), a dishonored Harvard professor, continues in this new installment. When we first met Jack, he had just lost his dream job to his nemesis, Miles Leonard (Tom Bennett, “Rocketman,” 2019). He ended up working as an A.P. Biology teacher at the fictional Whitlock High School in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, and his downward spiral didn’t end there.
Consumed with thoughts of revenge, Jack went to great lengths to use his honor roll students to get back at Miles. Of course, his life at Whitlock High has become much more complicated since then, and as he becomes more and more invested in life in his hometown, his antics become more complex. Meanwhile, principal Durbin (Patton Oswalt, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) tries his best to manage Jack.
In the second season of the show, Jack again uses his students, but this time he tries to figure out what makes Toledo folks happy in their daily lives. All the while, he is extracting information he thinks could come in handy for the bestselling book he plans to write. When the sophomore season ended, “A.P. Bio” was thrown into limbo, but, ultimately, NBC execs decided to save it and give it a new home. All eight episodes of the third season are set to premiere at once on Peacock.
If you’re a fan of the comedy television series, you may not approve of this season’s short, eightepisode run, as its first two sea-
sons spoiled us with 13 episodes each. The change was unavoidable, though, since COVID-19 interrupted filming schedules — the change in episode count was not an intentional change.
What is particularly interesting about Season 3 is how it is set during our current global situation: the people of Toledo are also facing a global pandemic, with students attending their classes via Zoom classrooms. Even Whitlock High was not given special treatment by the global health emergency. Not only will audiences see classroom setting changes, but we will also see relationship changes. Jack is ripped away from his love interest, Lynette (Elizabeth Alderfer, “Disjointed”). This time around, if the class wants to earn their A grades, they’ll have to help Jack with his love life.
While its ratings weren’t that impressive during its initial twoseason run, “A.P. Bio” has been well-received critically, and several network executives supported the series, despite it not being a top-rated show.
“A.P. Bio” is underrated because it doesn’t settle for easy laughs. Its jokes are consistently intelligent, and the series is patiently laid out, which is probably why it has been such a hit with critics.
Aside from the return of Howerton as Jack, the “A.P. Bio” Season 3 cast includes Mary Sohn (“The Boss,” 2016), Lyric Lewis (“Baskets”), Jean Villepique (“Sharp Objects”) and Paula Pell (“Wine Country,” 2019), among many others.
“A.P. Bio” is executive produced by O’Brien, Seth Meyers (“Late Night With Seth Meyers”), Andrew Singer (“30 Rock”), Michael Shoemaker (“Late Night With Jimmy Fallon”) and NBC comedy heavyweight Lorne Michaels (“Saturday Night Live”).
According to NBC Universal executives, the cast and crew of the show, which is partly produced inhouse through the Universal Television-based Broadway Video, are
more than excited to get rolling back into American TV. O’Brien, who has worked alongside Michaels for a long time, going back to his “Saturday Night Live” era, referred to “A.P. Bio” as his most favorite project in life.
Although streaming services such as Netflix have picked up a number of canceled network shows over the years, such as Fox’s “Lucifer” and ABC’s “Designated Survivor,” “A.P. Bio” is the first comedy series to be revived
by a streamer under the same corporate umbrella as its original network.
Mark it in your calendar: Season 3 of “A.P. Bio” premieres Thursday, Sept. 3, on NBC new streaming service, Peacock. And, if you
haven’t watched Seasons 1 and 2, now is your chance. You can catch up on the streamer, too, and then dive into Season 3 when it premieres. This series is the program many of us need — settle in for a ton of laughs.
