The towns and communities of Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood, Cuyuna, Trommald, Emily, Riverton and Bay Lake are glad you’re interested in visiting and we are excited to have you as our guest. While you’re here, remember this outdoor destination has been in the works for generations.
Crosby, Emily, Deerwood Detail Maps ............................................ 20
Some weekend, when you’ve climbed Crusher to the top of Miner’s Mountain, tip your hats to the men and women of steel, who dug the earth, and uncovered the minerals that built the backbone of this great country we call America. Without their toil, sacrifice and sweat, we wouldn’t have this great nation to call home. And, we certainly would not have trails worthy of national acclaim.
Community
This is a place for family. A regional hub for healthcare. A school district embracing technology. We’re proud to be a destination for tomorrow’s leaders and future entrepreneurs. There are very few times in life that you have the opportunity to be part of a story this big in a region this small. We’re thankful for it, and we’re excited to bring you our story from the land we love, the land we call the Cuyuna Lakes.

Mountain Biking, Hiking, Fishing, Canoeing and Paddle Boarding Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area boasts 25 miles of forested shoreline providing peaceful relaxation for those who desire a rustic experience. Leave technology behind and embrace the sun dancing on quiet, crystal blue waters, the crackling warmth of a campfire and the haunting call of loons. Sixteen primitive, first-come, firstserve camp sites and unsupervised beach are available at the Portsmouth Campground off County Road 30 north of Ironton. For the latest information on park maps, trails and improvements, check www.dnr.state.mn.us and search for Cuyuna Country. Spend a lazy afternoon paddling in a canoe or kayak. Slip over the side in scuba gear and explore the remnants of an iron mine hundreds of feet below the still surface. Plan a day or a week to camp, hike and fish but leave the motorized off-road vehicles at home as they are not allowed in the park.

Get a great overview of the area atop Miner’s Mountain. From Pennington Lake near Ironton, bike, hike or drive up the Outlook Trails’ winding switchbacks to the highest point in the area. There you will have a beautiful vista of numerous lakes and forests. Shhh. It’s quiet here. Solitude, starlight and the occasional splash of a trout breaking the shimmering surface of a pristine lake will soothe away any hectic weariness.

Cuyuna Lakes Visitor Guide | 2016 13
The best kept secret in Minnesota is Cuyuna Country. Our pristine lakes provide excellent fishing for a large variety of species, including trout.
Mine Lakes The mine lakes are famous for trout. But, if they are not cooperating, try switching to northern pike. They enjoy eating trout more than you do and grow quickly on this high protein food source. Submerged stands of timber shelter trophy pike, some pushing 30 pounds. The best technique when hooked to a behemoth is to start the motor or grab the oars and pull and snap your line in the underwater forest.
A pan fish supper awaits if you stay near the underwater trees during low light. Use a cane pole to drop a line to a depth above 30 feet and pull up quickly to keep the fish out of trouble. Imagine gliding over crystal clear waters with 40-foot visibility. Swim, snorkel, or cast a line in the clean unspoiled mine lakes . . . it’s just you and the fish.

The sunken trees also provide cover for hungry small and largemouth bass. Spinner baits are a great choice because the water does not have a lot of weeds and the bait can be worked through the stands of trees and stumps.

Natural Lakes Tired of gonzo fishing amidst jet skiers and power boats? Experience the solitude on our natural lakes where walleye, northern and largemouth bass are the main targets. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon slab crappies or big bluegills. Venture to larger waters for that trophy muskie. Launch your boat at the many public access points or if you are looking for peace and quiet, bring or rent a canoe or kayak and relax on one of the many small lakes with limited access. Grab a map, locate a back road and find your own honey hole on one of our tranquil lakes.
Upper Mississippi River The nearby Mississippi River, with excellent populations of walleye and smallmouth bass, is navigable under normal conditions with a motorized boat but some prefer to float it in a canoe. The stretch from Aitkin to Merrifield is both beautiful and rewarding. Whether boating, floating or fly fishing, check with Oars-N-Mine Bait and Tackle in Crosby for lake and river conditions and the local fishing secrets.
Choosing a bank is the easiest part of your move.

Bird Watch Cuyuna Country is prime territory for bird watching. Members of the local Bee-Nay-She Council Bird Club, one of the most active and respected bird clubs in Minnesota, have sighted Glossy Ibis, Sabian Gull, Varied Thrush and Buff Breasted Sandpiper. Great Gray Owls, Northern Hawk Owls and resident Barred Owls have also been observed. Careful observers will spot the nests of eagles and osprey, many times near well-traveled trails and roads. The area’s many lakes and wetlands provide important nesting habitat for Common Loons and Wood Ducks. Deciduous woodlands harbor nesting Red Shouldered Hawks, Ruffed Grouse and Barred and Northern Saw Whet Owls. Also in these woodlands are the nests of Whip-poor-wills and Mourning and Golden Winged Warblers. Look for the nest of Pine Warblers in stands of red pine. In winter, Red and White Winged Crossbills may be spotted in the shelter of pine stands while the Bohemian Wax Wings can be found snacking on lingering fruit of mountain ash and crab apple trees. Finches, such as American Goldfinch, Redpoll and Pine Siskin are frequent visitors to area birdfeeders. Harrier Goshawks and other accipiters can also be observed. With thousands of acres of public land, you’ve got a lot of ground to cover. So grab your binoculars, bird books, a comfortable pair of shoes and head for the birds.

Man High
Highway 210 and Curtis Avenue The first small step of manned space exploration was launched from the Portsmouth Mine in Crosby on August 19, 1957. Air Force Major Dr. David Simons rose above the earth 101,516 feet to become the first successful manned space flight in history.

Squeezed into a space gondola the size of a phone booth and floated aloft by a helium filled polyethylene balloon as thin as a human hair, Dr. Simon’s 32-hour mission was fraught with danger.
This museum is located in the old Soo Line Depot and features many artifacts of local history. Named in “Ripleys Believe It or Not” as the only depot in the world where the trains came in but never went past.
The steep canyon walls of the open pit Portsmouth Mine protected the fragile balloon as it began its ascent but once it rose above the earth it was subjected to the periods of an uncharted atmosphere. The heat of the sun caused the balloon to

expand to 200 feet in diameter and kept the balloon at its maximum height but in the cold night air it not only lost altitude but the thin balloon became so brittle it was in danger of shattering from the buffeting winds. As he approached 24 hours at the edge of space, a violent thunderstorm churned beneath him and Dr. Simons was forced to dump ballast and drop batteries from the gondola to remain above the deadly storm. Hours of controlled anxiety and increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the gondola took their toll and the mental and physical condition of an exhausted Dr. Simons began to deteriorate. Instructing Dr. Simons to breathe pure oxygen, the ground crew took action to prepare for descent. After 32 hours “on the edge of destiny,” as Dr. Simons described it, the gondola touched down in a flax field in South Dakota. The raw data collected, the cosmic ray plates to be carefully analyzed and the notes from Dr. Simons provided the scientific research that would one day enable Neil Armstrong to step onto the surface of the moon and declare “. . . one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”

Community Events Music in the Park 10th Anniversary Cuyuna Crusher Come to Music in the Park in Crosby on the beautiful Serpent Lake Park. Bring the whole family for a fun night filled with music, food, games and more. Music in the Park begins June 9, 2016 and continues on the second and fourth Thursday evenings in June, July and August from 6 to 9 p.m. We are proud to mark the 2016 summer concert series the 10th year of bringing local talent to the Crosby Memorial Park! There is no admission fee.
Fast and Furious Power Boat Races The slower-paced lifestyle of Cuyuna Country is interrupted on the last weekend of July when power boat racing returns to the shores of Serpent Lake in Crosby. Since 1986, the Twin Cities Powerboat Association and the Cuyuna Lakes Chamber sponsor the mid-summer tradition, dating back to the 1970s. Racers from all around the country come to Crosby to participate in what has become one of the most spectacular venues in the United States. Watch racers compete in classes ranging from 40 MPH Mini-GTs up to 140 MPH Mod-Unlimiteds. Track racer points earned toward a National High Points title in the American Powerboat Association. Enjoy your leisure time in Cuyuna Country, but remember we also have a fast and furious side. The Power Boat Races are free and held from Noon to 4 on the last Saturday and Sunday of July.
The Cuyuna Lakes Chamber partnered with the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series Race in 2015 and hosted the 5th race in their Series the “Cuyuna Lakes Crusher.” The year 2016 will mark the second annual event with the MN Mountain Bike Series in the Cuyuna Lakes. The 6-ish mile Cuyuna race course will start at our new parking lot trail head at the Pennington location with a good climb to the top of over-look road where riders will then turn and head into Cuyuna single track hitting all the great fast flow trails that we have to offer. The course is composed of about 85 percent single track with great opportunities for passing on short sections of service road spread throughout the race course. This course is designed to challenge experienced and beginners alike with split options for different classes ensuring big smiles on every racer’s face. The Minnesota Mountain Bike Series Race presented the Race of the Year Award to the Cuyuna Crusher for its 2015 race. This award was voted on by the 500 racers who raced at Cuyuna, so this means the course and volunteer support to run the event was outstanding. We look forward to another great race in 2016.

Christmas in the Park
Woodtick Races The race tracks go up the second Saturday in June each year on tables outside a bar in Cuyuna, appropriately named the Woodtick Inn. For a $5 entry fee, which goes into a pool for cash prizes, anyone can become a tick jockey. You can buy a wood tick for a dollar, or you can bring your own wood tick. The real winner is the town’s volunteer fire department — probably the only department in the world that gets proceeds from parasites. It’s been going on for more than 35 years and they can make up to $5,000.

With all the extreme winter sports for serious athletes, a town in central Minnesota is offering an extreme competition for the less serious crowd. The Bar Stool Races in Ironton feature downhill events that are fueled in part by beer. The co-owner of Town Tavern came up with the idea to put skis on bar stools and race them to raise money for the local snowmobile club. It was the start of something ridiculous. The object of the race is to get down to the bottom of the hill as fast as you can and look good. The event is held the first Saturday in February at Morningside Park in Ironton.
