welcome from the

Home Show Chair

Another year has passed and we are once again on the verge of spring. We know what that means; it’s time for the 32nd Annual Mid Minnesota Builders Home show. Hello to all. This is Jim Falconer from Radco Truck Center/Accessory Pro Warehouse. I am proud to once again be the chairperson for this years show. On behalf of Colleen Faacks (MMBA Executive Officer) and all of our hardworking committee members, we welcome all of you. We are very excited about this years show and hope that you will feel the same. We have two special guests that will be at the show this year and we feel they will enhance your overall show experience. The first guest is Bobby Jensen from Kare 11 “Grow with Kare”. Bobby will be doing three presentations this year, two on Saturday and one on Sunday. The seminars are titled “Backyard To Table” and will cover all of his ideas on growing and maintaining a successful vegetable garden this coming summer. Check out complete details on page 12. The second guest this year is Steve Porter of Steve Porter’s Trophy Whitetail Deer. Steve will be at our show all day Saturday, April 13th, 2013. He will be located between the Civic Center and the Gold Medal Arena, formerly the MMBA Concession Area. Steve will be covering topics ranging from various hunting techniques and tips, to growing food plots. He will also

have 30 feet of display tables filled with his impressive collection of antlers. This is a very cool presentation, so be sure to stop by. Based on your responses and last year’s success, we are once again inviting outside food and beverage vendors from around the community to provide you with breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a snack. They will be located at the east end of the Gold Medal Arena. There will also be a seating area set up near them with several tables and chairs for your convenience. Once again we feel we have put together a top notch show with exhibitors for everything from homebuilding, remodeling, landscape design, to the best way to finance your spring project. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2013 Mid Minnesota Builders Association Home Show!

2013 NAHB Show Home Focuses on Outdoor Living

Each year in conjunction with the National Association of Home Builders’ International Builders’ Show a home is built that showcases innovative products for the future of home building - and features great ideas for anyone thinking of building or remodeling a home. The 2013 New American Home® (TNAH) in the suburbs of Las Vegas, Nev., is the 30th edition of TNAH. It incorporates the latest concepts in architecture, construction methods, lifestyle trends and new products that can be replicated - in whole or in part - in housing built any region and in any price range. The 6,712-square-foot desert-contemporary

home features a focus on flexible spaces and outdoor living, trends that continues to gain popularity nationwide. The home’s architecture takes maximum advantage of Nevada’s year round temperate climate with easy flow from indoor to outdoor spaces. The main room expands into the backyard and pool area through large automated pocket doors that open at the touch of a button and allow for cross ventilation and unobstructed views. An outdoor daybed is located just behind the master bedroom, and the rejuvenation room opens to the outdoors on three sides like a spa. Flex space planning throughout the home makes it convenient for young professional families and older generations to live together yet still maintain independent lives. Common gathering spaces are included among private living areas, a design feature that encourages unlimited movement within the space by all members of the household. Even with the extensive indoor-outdoor flow spaces, TNAH is environmentally sensitive and ecologically smart. Green building features include a gas HVAC system, solar hot water heater with gas fired back-up, photovoltaic panels, hydronic air handlers and closed spray foam insulation that also reduce sound transmission through plumbing walls. The weather-sensitive irrigation system automatically

adjusts usage relative to the immediate climate. The water features in the home are not only functional, they are also fashionable. Reflecting pools and waterfalls help humidify and cool the air in summer months, which reduce the home’s operating costs by using less energy and improving air quality. A visually stunning waterfall located in a central part of the home has a projector shooting onto it, reflecting the image in a still pool below. The home owner can monitor, manage and control security systems, climate, televisions, music, lighting, shades and more from their smart phones, tablets or laptops with the wireless network that offers wall-to-wall coverage throughout the home, in the outdoor living spaces and in the front and back yards. Blue Heron, a Las Vegas luxury home builder, led all phases of the project, including architecture, construction and interior design. To see photos of the 2013 TNAH and find out more information about the features and product manufacturers, go to TNAH.com. Big Design Ideas for Small Homes

There are any number of reasons families might want to make better use of the space they have in their current or new home. As a family grows, their lifestyle changes, and space for storing toys or doing homework is at a premium. Multigenerational living, where elderly parents, grown children or other relatives all live under the same roof has become common. Or it may just be cosmetic, and the best way to keep clutter at a minimum. Home builders and remodelers are responding to the demand by maximizing the utility of living spaces without sacrificing visual appeal. With creative storage and built-in features, dining rooms can become a home offices or game room in minutes, living rooms can be used for family meals, and foyers can store much more than coats and umbrellas. In new home construction, smallerscale, walkable communities have become popular. To accommodate the size constraints of a skinny lot, homes are being designed with features like stacked garages where two cars can be housed trunk to hood instead of side by side. Using flexible walls, attractive flooring material and a roofless interior garage space, the area can easily be converted to a patio for entertaining. Improved energy efficiency of windows and doors means homes now feature more indoor-outdoor connectivity. Moveable walls and outdoor spaces tucked within the home’s floor plan provide for

better flexible use of the space, as well as improved privacy in densely populated areas. The often-unused space under a stairwell can be engineered to accommodate filing cabinets or drawers, or even to create a sanctuary for the family pet complete with a bed and gates to close it off. Drawers built into stair risers are a great place to store small items such as gloves and hats or art supplies. The trend extends to home furnishings as well. Murphy beds, where a piece of furniture conceals a bed that can be set up for sleeping in few minutes, have been around for many years. Modern Murphy beds are hidden not only in armoires or bookcases, but new designs feature beds that lower from the ceiling electronically at the touch of a button, or fold out from inside a desk or counter. Other creative, multi-purpose furniture designs include dining tables that convert to a billiard table, bookcases that contain fold-down chairs for when you’re entertaining more than the usual number of friends and family, and cocktail tables with trays that pull out for eating in front of the television. To learn about more trends in home design, or find a home builder or remodeler to create the home of your dreams, Contact Mid-Minnesota Builders Association at (218) 829-4982 or visit them at: www. midmnba.org

Steve Porter’s Trophy Whitetail When does a hobby become a business? For Steve Porter and his family, it started back in 1992 when they began raising whitetails. Steve had a desire to see a mature whitetail on his farm, and was not having much success growing one in the wild. A game warden friend told Steve that he could legally raise deer. So Steve got all of the required paperwork, put up a fence, had his first DNR inspection and bought his first deer. It was a young buck he named Clyde, which he purchased for $200. The young bottle-fed buck fawn was brought home to the farm on his brother’s lap in the front seat of their family car. In 1997 the family wanted to see if they could turn a profit with their whitetail deer, and things took a dramatic turn for the entire family. They took 4½-year-old Clyde, who scored 186 inches on the Boone and Crockett scoring system, to a sports show in Eau Claire, Wis. They were a huge hit at the show among the other attractions, which included a trout pond, archery booths, fly-in fishing guides, hunting guides and many other family-oriented exhibits. Since that first sports show, the Porters and their “Live Trophy Whitetail Deer” have been the main attraction at events all over the Upper Midwest. Steve said it is not uncommon to spend 40 to 50 days every winter talking to sportsmen at sports shows in front of his deer display. The Porters are dedicated to their family business and receive joy from raising and interacting with their whitetail deer. This amount of dedication is required when you consider that whitetail bucks, when bottle-fed, are notoriously dangerous. Steve has been attacked by his bucks on many occasions; he has then found himself up a tree or quickly trying to scramble over a fence. Steve is the chief deputy for the Kittson County Sheriff ’s Department.

His boys, Austin (21) and Dillan (18), are usually Steve’s coworkers. Having to do parts of the seminars helps bring focus from the students in the classroom. Brody (11) and Nolan (8) are busy every spring helping to bottle-feed and tame some of the fawns. But don’t think that Dillan, Brody and Nolan have it “so lucky” by not going to a school building every day. Homeschooled by their mother, Peggy, they are doing their school work in the summer months, and Dillian is constantly working at his education so that he has the time to spend on the road with his dad. Going on the road is not easy and each member of the family has their part in this business venture. The cost, time and the planning and preparation all have to come together. Steve’s main concern is keeping all of the bucks safe, healthy and happy. To help defray all of the expenses and to allow Steve to turn a profit, Steve Porter’s Live Trophy Whitetail Deer show is now sponsored by many major clubs and organizations. The Porters, with their sponsors, have been able to lead the industry when it comes to positively impacting youth. Between 300 and 700 students attend the whitetail deer seminar. The display is set up for an entire day, with all of the grades having the opportunity to come and attend an age-appropriate seminar. The reason the sporting organizations spend money on Steve’s school program is because they want to see the continuance of hunting. They realize the value of hunting and the fact that it is an American pastime. The Porters, along with a sponsor, North American Deer Farmers Association (NADeFA), have made a one-hour video, “Steve Porter’s Incredible Whitetail Deer.” The video is geared toward fifth through eighth graders. This video is available at their website: www.porterwhitetail.com.
