Singing praises
Year’s best artists honored at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards
By Sachi Kameishi TV MediaThere’s something for everyone in the televised ceremonies that populate awards season. From boozy Golden Globes banter to the Emmys’ quirky hosting history and BAFTAs charming decorum, each of the major awards shows has its own way of celebrating its particular craft and making the show rewarding and accessible to its millions of viewers. The ratings vary year to year, and although the Academy Awards tends to walk away from the season as the mostwatched awards show, the Grammy Awards is a close second.
I would argue that the Grammys is the most exciting, dazzling and entertaining of all awards shows, and you can watch this year’s presentation when it airs Sunday, Jan. 26, on CBS. According to Nielsen, it’s also the one with the most so-
cule over the years, but it has man aged to retain a committed, young and vocal audience. In fact, the in tense reactions of fans to changes and decisions made by those who run the awards just goes to show you how much these fans truly care. It all boils down to the idea that songs can touch people and con nect them to each other far more immediately than film or televi sion. Music is as unifying as it is personal, so pitting genres and art ists against each other can elicit strong reactions. As return ing host and 15-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys said in her 2019 opening monologue: “Music is what we cry to, it’s what we march to, it’s what we rock to, it’s what we make love to. It’s our shared global lan guage.”

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX “The Stranger”
Richard Armitage (“Berlin Station”) stars as Adam Price in this eight-part series, which is based on the novel of the same name by Harlan Coben and premieres Thursday, Jan. 30. Price lives a seemingly perfect life — he has two amazing sons and a stable, happy marriage with his wife, Corinne (Dirvla Kirwan, “White Dragon”). But when a stranger (Hannah John-Kamen, “Killjoys”) approaches him and shares a secret about Corrine, his world is suddenly turned upside down. As he tries to confirm this new information, he realizes that Corinne has been deceiving him, but even more disturbing is the realization that they are in the middle of a conspiracy that puts the lives of everyone he cares about at risk.
“Next In Fashion”
Netflix takes fashion competitions to the next level in the premiere of “Next in Fashion,” airing Wednesday, Jan. 29. British designer and “Queer Eye” host Tan France teams up with fashion icon Alexa Chung to host this reality series that takes some of its cues from “Project Runway.” Rather than featuring amateur designers, though, this one focuses on 18 designers who are already working with either celebrities or major brands in the industry. The designers battle for a grand prize of $250,000 and the opportunity to debut their line with fashion retailer Net-a-Porter. Fashionistas won’t want to miss this new series that features Instagram fashion director Eva Chen and celebrity stylist Elizabeth Stewart as judges.
“BoJack Horseman” Season 6 - Part 2
On Friday, Jan. 31, the last half of the final season of this beloved adult animated comedy series premieres. Will Arnett (“Arrested Development”) returns to lend his voice to the depressed, alcoholic, anthropomorphic horse, BoJack, who recently turned
over a new leaf by checking himself into rehab. While he focuses on recovery, his friends are all busy. Diane (voiced by Alison Brie, “GLOW”) works on videos for the website Girl Croosh, and Princess Carolyn (Amy Sedaris, “No Activity”) copes with being a new mother. At the end of Part 1, we saw reporters begin to dig into BoJack’s past and uncover some secrets. What will it mean for BoJack if secrets from his past are brought to light? Find out when Part 2 of Season 6 premieres.
“I Am A Killer” Season 2
We hear lots of stories about serial killers and their brutal acts, but what we rarely hear is why they did what they did, or whether they feel any remorse. On Friday, Jan. 31, the second season of this dark and fascinating series premieres. The longest-serving death row inmates in America are interviewed, and the show looks not only at the criminals, their motivation and how time in prison has changed them, but also at the lasting effects of their crimes, what they’ve done to their families and communities. Find out if a killer can be rehabilitated and find redemption in Season 2 of “I Am A Killer.”
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU
“Brian Banks” (2018)
Aldis Hodge (“City on a Hill”) stars as high school football star
“Fighting with My Family” (2019)
Brian Banks in this biographical drama coming to the streamer on Monday, Jan. 27. Banks had the perfect life and was prepared to go to the University of South Carolina to continue playing football — the next step on the path to his dream of playing in the NFL. But when, despite minimal evidence, he is convicted for a crime he didn’t commit and sentenced to 10 years in prison, his dreams are crushed. Now, years later, Banks fights to clear his name and get his life back with the help of criminal defense lawyer and founder of the California Innocence Project Justin Brooks (Greg Kinnear, “Strange But True,” 2019).
Sibling rivalry reaches a new level in this film, which comes to Hulu on Thursday, Jan. 30. For their whole lives, Saraya (Florence Pugh, “Little Women,” 2019) and her brother, Zak (Jack Lowden, “Dunkirk,” 2017), have been huge fans of professional wrestling. So when they get the opportunity to audition for the world’s biggest wrestling organization, they’re thrilled. A rift quickly forms between her and her family when a talent scout invites only her to join the league and move from Britain to America. Saraya struggles as she learns the cost of achieving her dream. Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”) and Nick Frost (“Sick Note”) also star.
WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME VIDEO
“All or Nothing: Brazil National Football Team”
On Friday, Jan. 31, Prime Video launches this new behind-thescenes series that follows the team’s journey to its ninth Copa America title last year. Take a look inside the season with interviews and training sessions, and see what happens in the dressing room between the players and the coaches. This popular sports series has previously featured New Zealand’s All Blacks and the U.K.’s Manchester City.
“Ted Bundy: Falling For A Killer”
The fascination with serial killers continues on Friday, Jan. 31, when Prime Video takes things to the next level with this new five-part series. Infamous serial killer Ted Bundy admitted to the kidnapping, rape and murder of 30 women across seven states in the 1970s. The series focuses predominantly on how the women around him were impacted by his actions, featuring his former girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (aka Liz Kendall), and her daughter, Molly Kloepfer, speaking out about their relationship with Bundy.

Sometimes leaving home can help you gain a greater appreciation of where you came from, and Kardea Brown is a good example of that.
The host of “Delicious Miss Brown” — now in its second season on Food Network — was born on Wadmalaw Island, part of the Sea Islands of Charleston, South Carolina. The Charleston native was studying to become a social worker in New Jersey when she came to Food Network’s attention in 2014. She impressed executives with her appearance on “Deen of Lean,” and that TV
moment proved to be a career changer.
More than four years have passed since Brown set out to make her culinary dreams come true. She’s been the host of “Cupcake Championship” and appeared on shows such as “Beat Bobby Flay,” “Chopped Junior” and more. But her star shines brightest in her first solo project, “Delicious Miss Brown.”
It’s a family affair in the episode airing Sunday, Jan. 26. Aunt Kardea cooks up kid-friendly treats for her nieces and nephews, including Stovetop Mac ‘n’ Cheese and some Baked PotatoChip Chicken Strips, followed by Charleston Milkshakes.
These are some of the “downhome recipes” you’d expect to see every week, but “Delicious Miss Brown” is more than just a Southern cooking show. In fact, Brown’s Gullah/Geechee ancestry plays a big part in her success on and off screen, having created the pop-up New Gullah Supper Club that regularly showcases the dishes her mother and grandmother passed down to her.
The Gullah/Geechee culture is unique to coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, where residents can trace their lineage back to captive West
Africans and the slave trade era. The Gullah/Geechee have managed to hold onto a way of life that developed over generations, and the cuisine is a melding of West African customs and locally available foods.
This is the influence that has defined both Brown and her show, which airs each Sunday on Food Network. “Delicious Miss Brown” films on Edisto Island, which allows Brown to simultaneously share the art of lowcountry cooking while providing glimpses of her proud heritage.

Terminator: Dark Fate
A newly modified Terminator Rev9 (Luna) is sent from the future to kill Dani Ramos (Reyes) in Mexico City. Grace (Davis), a cyborg soldier, is also sent back from 2042 to defend Ramos. Infiltrating the assembly plant where Dani works, Rev-9 utilizes his ability to split and
shift his body to transform into Dani’s father but is stopped when Sarah Conner (Hamilton) intervenes. As the trio evade Rev-9, they come to realize the similar threads that bind their various timelines.
