“You People” (2023)
“Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris makes his feature film directorial debut with “You People,” premiering Friday, Jan. 27, on Netflix. Co-written by Barris and star Jonah Hill (“Don’t Look Up,” 2021), this romantic comedy film follows new couple Ezra (Hill) and Amira (Lauren London, “The Game”) while they learn to navigate their tricky family dynamics. Ezra and Amira find themselves examining modern love as they grapple with clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences with their families, while taking their relationship forward. “You People” stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Seinfeld”) and David Duchovny (“The X-Files”) as Ezra’s parents, Shelley and Arnold, while Amira’s parents, Akbar and Fatima, are played by Eddie Murphy (“Dreamgirls,” 2006) and Nia Long (“Big Momma’s House,” 2000). The film also stars Sam Jay (“Bust Down”), Travis Bennett (“Dave”), Molly Gordon (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Deon Cole (“Blackish”), Andrea Savage (“Tulsa King”), Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”) and Mike Epps (“The Upshaws”).
“Lockwood & Co.” - Season 1
Jonathan Stroud’s hit young adult supernatural thriller series makes its way to the small screen Friday, Jan. 27, when the new series adaptation “Lockwood & Co.” premieres on Netflix. In a world overrun by ghosts, giant corporations employ psychic teens to battle all of their supernatural problems for them, but only one company, Lockwood & Co., operates with no adult supervision whatsoever. Run by a rebellious young entrepreneur named Anthony Lockwood (played by fresh talent Cameron Chapman), who is haunted (literally) by his mysterious past, Lockwood & Co. is also home to Anthony’s brilliant but eccentric sidekick George (Ali Hadji-Heshmati, “Holby City”) and a newly arrived, supremely gifted girl named Lucy (Ruby Stokes, “Bridgerton”). Together, the talented trio take on the ghosts plaguing London and encounter a terrifying mystery that could change the course of history. Directed by William McGregor (“His Dark Materials”), Catherine Morshead (“No Offence”) and Joe Cornish (“The Kid Who Would Be King,” 2019), this series’ eight-episode first season is written by Cornish, Joy Wilkinson (“Doctors”), Ed Hime (“Doctor Who”) and Kara Smith (“Anansi Boys”). Morven Christie (“The Bay”), Luke Treadaway (“Fortitude”), Paddy Holland (“Invasion”), Ivanno Jeremiah (“A Discovery of Witches”), Rhianna Dorris (“The Kid Who Would Be King,” 2019), Hayley Konadu (“Moon Knight”) and Jack Bandeira (“Happy Valley”) also star.
“How I Met Your Father” - Season 2
“How I Met Your Father,” the standalone sequel to the smash-hit sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” returns to Hulu with its second season Tuesday, Jan. 24, with episodes airing weekly. Set in the same universe as the original series and sticking to the same narrative style, “HIMYF” stars series producer Hilary Duff (“Younger”) as the show’s protagonist, Sophie, as her future self (narrated by Kim Cattrall, “Sex and the City”) tells her son the story of how she met his father. Fans follow along with the saga as Sophie and her close-knit group of friends learn how to survive and thrive in modernday New York City. Expanding to 20 episodes from its premiere season’s 10, “HIMYF” Season 2 picks back up with Sophie, Jesse (Christopher Lowell, “GLOW”), Charlie (Tom Ainsley, “The Royals”), Valentina (Francia Raisa, “Grown-ish”), Ellen (Tien Tran, “Candyman,” 2021) and Sid (Suraj Sharma, “God Friended Me”), as they build their careers, grow their families and figure out who they are and what they want. The original creators of “How I Met Your Mother,” Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, return as executive producers of the series, working alongside new creators and writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (both of 2018’s “Love, Simon” and NBC’s “This Is Us”).
“Extraordinary” - Season 1
The new superhero comedy series “Extraordinary,” from “Killing Eve” executive producers Lee Morris, Charles Dawson and Sally Woodward, premieres its first two episodes Wednesday, Jan. 25, on Hulu. In the “Extraordinary” universe, everyone over the age of 18 develops a unique superpower. Everyone, apparently, except 25-year-old Jen (Máiréad Tyers, “Belfast,” 2021), who feels like she’s been completely left behind while she waits for her own power. Armed with nothing but a bit of hope, a lot of desperation and the support of her flatmates, Carrie (Sofia Oxenham, “Poldark”) and Kash (Bilal Hasna, “Screw”), Jen begins her journey to find her maybe-superpower. Along the way, she just might discover the joy of being just kind of OK.
Written for the screen by Emma Moran (“Have I Got News for You”), the series is directed by Nadira Amrani (“On the Edge”), Toby MacDonald (“Old Boys,” 2018) and Jennifer Sheridan (“The Snow Spider”). Siobhán McSweeney (“Derry Girls”), Robbie Gee (“Snatch,” 2000) and Reis Daniel (“The Dog Ate My Homework”) also star.
“Dino Ranch” - Season 2, 6 episodes
Kids can get ready to stomp their way into a new adventure: Season 2 of the hit computer-animated children’s series, “Dino Ranch,” continues on Disney+ Wednesday, Jan. 25, with six new episodes. The series follows the adventures of the Cassidy family as they work, play and grow in a fantastical “pre-westoric” world, where dinosaurs roam and live in harmony with humans. On the Cassidy family’s ranch — a working farm and dinosaur sanctuary — parents Jane (Athena Karkanis, “Manifest”) and Bo (Scott Gorman, “Looped”) guide their adoptive kids Jon (voiced by both Jacob Soley, “Blue’s Clues & You” and Tyler James Nathan, “Mighty Express”), Min (Ava Ro, “Holly Hobbie”) and Miguel (Jacob Mazeral, “Snoopy Presents: Lucy’s School”), as the young ranchers learn the ropes, discover all the joys of ranch life and navigate the great outdoors through unpredictable challenges. And by the Cassidys’ sides on all their adventures are their trusty dino pals: Jon’s raptor, Blitz (Joshua Graham, “Bakugan: Battle Planet”); Min’s brontosaurus, Clover (Deven Christian Mack, “Total DramaRama”); Miguel’s triceratops, Tango (Karkanis); Bo’s T-Rex, Biscuit; and Jane’s parasaurolophus, Quack. Created by Matthew Fernandes (“Kingdom Force”) and Boat Rocker Media, the series is directed by Bill Speers (“Top Wing”).
“American Blackout” (2013)
What happens when the worst-case scenario becomes a reality? The 2013 National Geographic docu-drama film “American Blackout,” coming to Disney+ Friday, Jan. 27, imagines those possibilities, and more. The film imagines the story of a national power failure in the United States caused by a cyber attack, revealing (in gritty detail) the impact of what happens, as experienced by those who kept filming on cameras and phones over 10 days, in real time. Visceral and immersive, “American Blackout” explores what it takes to survive, and who are left standing when the lights do come back on. Directed by Jonathan Rudd (“Genius of Britain: The Scientists Who Changed the World”) and written by Emily Ballou (“The Slap”) and Ewan Morrison (“Cold Call”), the film is executive produced by Richard Bond (“Locked Up Abroad”), Dimitri Doganis (“Gold Rush”) and Bart Layton (“Paranormal Witness”). Kasim Aslam (“A Devil’s Game,” 2016), Hardy Awadjie (“What Brings You In?”), Lena Drake (“The Send-Off,” 2022), Casey Likes (“The Birch”), Greg Lutz (“Interrogation”) and Ronald Bush (“Apocalypse Rising,” 2018) star.
“Shotgun Wedding” (2022)
The classic vow “’Til death do us part” gets put to the test in the new action comedy “Shotgun Wedding,” premiering Friday, Jan. 27, on Prime Video. Gathering together their large and lovable (but highly opinionated) families, Darcy (Jennifer Lopez, “Hustlers,” 2019) and Tom (Josh Duhamel, “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers”) head to the tropics for the ultimate destination wedding. But, as if their impending nuptials and some last-minute cold feet aren’t enough, they suddenly find their lives in danger when the entire wedding party is taken hostage. Teaming up, Darcy and Tom work to save the day and save their loved ones — assuming they don’t kill each other first. Directed by Jason Moore (“Pitch Perfect,” 2012) with a screenplay penned by Mark Hammer (“Two Night Stand,” 2014), “Shotgun Wedding” also stars Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Lenny Kravitz (“The Butler,” 2013), Sonia Braga (“Kiss of the Spider Woman,” 1985), Cheech Marin (“Maya and the Three”), Selena Tan (“Crazy Rich Asians,” 2018), D’Arcy Carden (“A League of Their Own”), Callie Hernandez (“The Flight Attendant”), Desmin Borges (“You’re The Worst”) and Steve Coulter (“Leverage: Redemption”).
“Good Rivals”
See the story behind the Mexico-United States soccer rivalry in the three-part documentary “Good Rivals,” coming to Prime on Friday, Jan. 27. Experience the rise of the US Men’s National Team through their decadeslong rivalry with the Mexico Men’s National Team. The series peels back the political, social, and sporting layers of the rivalry through the eyes of Landon Donovan (U.S.) and Rafael Márquez (Mexico), who became symbols of their countries’ soccer cultures during their respective careers in the early and mid 2000s. “Good Rivals” will also examine the passionate, international battle for on-field talent and fan support that has made the U.S.-Mexico border one of the most fascinating soccer frontiers in the world, with players — and families — from both countries becoming the focus of recruiting battles between these two deeply interconnected nations. “Good Rivals” was directed by Gabriel Serra and also includes appearances by Sunil Gulati, Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, Alexei Lalas, Hugo Sanchez and Clint Dempsey.
