• 2019-20 BOYS’ SEASON RECAP • The Northern Lakes Lightning boys’ hockey team finished 14-10-1 overall during the 2019-20 regular season. The top regular season scorer for the Lightning was Shane Donovan, who finished with 29 goals and 36 assists for 65 points. Hunter Nybakken was second in scoring with 24 goals and 44 points; followed by Caiden Kjelstrom with 17 goals and 33 points; Kyler Couture 10 goals and 25 points; Erik Larson 4 goals and 16 points; and Tyler Seeling 10 goals and 14 points.

Northern Lakes goaltender Adler Hoagland posted an 8-8 record with a 3.61 goals against in 19 games while teammate Sam LeMieur was 5-2 with a 3.62 goals against in 18 games. Another netminder, Jeremiah Smythe, had one win in six games with a 2.78 goals against and .92 save percentage.

In Mid-State Conference play, Detroit Lakes finished first with a 7-1 record, followed by Northern Lakes 5-2-1, Prairie Centre 4-4, Wadena-Deer Creek 2-6-1 and Park Rapids 1-7. The Lakers and Lightning both had 14 regular season wins.

In the Section 5A playoffs, the sixth-seeded Lightning defeated Becker/Big Lake 6-2 as Donovan had two goals and two assists in the first round before losing to third-seeded Pine City Area 4-1 in the quarterfinals on Feb. 20, 2020. Donovan scored the only goal for Northern Lakes while Hoagland stopped 33 of the 37 shots he faced. Pine City Area, which improved to 20-6 overall with the playoff win, had also defeated the Lightning 7-1 during the regular season.

Pine City Area edged Chisago Lakes 4-3 while Monticello downed Princeton 5-1 in the semifinal round.

Monticello then outscored Pine City Area 6-4 to win the section championship. Monticello then lost to Hermantown 7-1 in the Class 2A state quarterfinals while Mehtomedi eventually edged Hermantown 3-2 in the Class 2A state championship game.

COVID REGULATIONS AT BREEZY POINT ICE ARENA: (taken from the MN Hockey Return from 6-week pause phase 5 document) 1.

Per the state mandate, cloth face coverings (masks) must be worn by everyone inside an arena at all times. This includes participants during on-ice practice and game play.

2. Locker rooms may not be used. Players should put skates on in designated areas of the arena that provide for social distancing.

3. No equipment bags will be allowed in facilities with the exception of goalies.

(HCC) is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all workers and participants. To ensure that, we have developed the following Preparedness Plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. All associates are all responsible for implementing this plan. Our goal is to mitigate the potential for transmission of COVID-19 in our programs, and that requires full cooperation among workers, management and participants. Only through this cooperative effort can we establish and maintain a safe and healthy space for the Hallett Center’s program participants and workers. Our Preparedness Plan follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) guidelines and federal OSHA standards related to COVID-19 and addresses:

4. All players must arrive at the arena fully dressed, with the exception of skates, helmet and gloves.

• Hygiene and respiratory etiquette;

5. Players must not enter the arena prior to 10 minutes before the start of their scheduled ice time. They must exit the arena no later than 10 minutes following the conclusion of their ice time.

• Housekeeping – cleaning, disinfection and decontamination;

6. Spectators will be allowed in arenas for tournaments. We ask that spectators remain immediate household to the player only. These spectators must be masked and socially distanced from others.

• Communications and training that will be provided to managers and workers;

Screening and policies for participants The Northern Lakes Youth Hockey Association and Lightening High School teams are encouraged to self-monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19.

• Engineering and administrative controls for social distancing; • Prompt identification and isolation of sick persons; • Management and supervision necessary to ensure effective implementation of the plan.

Dryland activities will not be allowed inside the arenas.

8. Only active players and 3 coaches are allowed on the bench during game play. Players who are unable to participate may not be on the bench.

The following policies and procedures are recommended to assess participants’ health status prior to the start of activity each day and for participants to report when they are sick or experiencing symptoms. The Hallett Center will not be responsible for conducting participant or coaches’ screenings but will be conducting referee and spectator screenings.

Coaches must wear a mask while on the ice or on the bench for all games and practices, unless they have a pre-existing medical condition which should be communicated to their association leadership in advance 10. Players who are instructed to quarantine by public health will be considered ineligible for participation for the duration of their quarantine period. If a player instructed to quarantine plays in a game, rules subject to playing an ineligible player shall be enforced.

Temperature screening is recommended that all participants and coaches have their body temperature taken prior to the start of each practice. All HCC associates will take their temperature prior to the start of their shift adhering to the guidelines stated in the Hallett Center of Crosby Preparedness Plan: If a temperature is above 100.4 °F, it is not recommended to participate in the scheduled activity.

• HOCKEY DEFINITIONS • Backchecking: The act of skating back to your defensive zone and applying pressure to opposing players when they have possession of the puck and are on the rush. We often joke “what is backchecking”, because adult league players are notorious for not being very motivated backcheckers.

Break out: When a team gains control of the puck in their defensive end they will “break out” with the puck to go on the attack. Most teams have established break out plays to accomplish this important part of the game.

Change on the fly: A team may change its players even as play continues. This is known as “changing on the fly.” A player coming on the rink cannot play the puck until the player they are replacing is off the rink.

Deke (Deking): Used by an offensive player with the puck to confuse a defender or goalie. It is a fake or feint move. A common deke is to lower the shoulder in one direction but actually turn in the other.

Delayed Penalty: A penalty that has not yet resulted in a stoppage of play because the team that will have the man advantage is in possession of the puck. Play continues until the team being penalized gains control of the puck. The referee will raise his arm indicating that there is a delayed penalty situation.

Dump and Chase: – An offensive strategy used to get the puck over the opposing team’s blue line and into the corners where players can race to get it, thereby moving the play into the attacking zone.

Five hole: The potential scoring areas around a goal are numbered from one to four starting in the lower right corner and proceeding clockwise at each corner of the net. The “5 hole” is between the goalie’s legs.

Point: The point is an area just inside the blue line of the attacking zone. It is normally occupied by the attacking team’s defensive players.

Slot: A prime scoring area located between the faceoff circles and in front of the goal.

Wave off: When a stoppage of play is about to occur, the referee may decide to continue play by “waving off” the stoppage. Examples include icing and offsides.
