Good to be bad
NBC’s ‘Good Girls’ are wrong for all the right reasons
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaThey say good things come in threes, and that’s certainly true in one of prime time’s most intriguing comedy-infused dramas. Rife with moral conundrums and criminal characters, the series has earned critical praise and has become a must-watch on Netflix.
Tired of struggling to make lemonade every time life handed them lemons, three women take matters into their own hands in the third season of “Good Girls,” airing Sunday, March 22, on NBC. In the beginning of the series, suburban moms Beth (Christina Hendricks, “Mad Men”), Ruby (Retta, “Parks and Recreation”) and Annie (Mae Whitman, “Parenthood”) turned to crime to make ends meet when they robbed a grocery store. However, they had no idea that the grocery store in question had ties to organized crime and a dangerous thug named Rio (Manny Montana, “Graceland”). Thus began an unfortunate series of events that led them farther down a dark path.
“Good Girls” is a bit of a departure from the tamer fare that is usual ly seen on broadcast television. This kind of grit is more often at home on cable channels such as HBO, AMC or FX, not one of the big four networks.
That’s one of the reasons Hendricks wasn’t so sure about the show when she first read the script. A May article on theatlantic.com indicated that Hendricks explained why during a press tour panel.
“My big fear was that it was on network television,” she said. “I was terrified that they were just not going to allow the real rawness of it.”
Fortunately for fans, NBC has allowed the series to flourish, with plenty of action to go around. During the show’s inaugural season, some critics compared the series to a gentler or feminist version of AMC’s hit
(Matthew Lillard, “Scooby Doo,” 2002) poor financial decisions. Ru by’s daughter is ill and needs expen sive medical treatment. Meanwhile, Annie, who’s also Beth’s sister, needs money to hire a lawyer because her ex, Gregg (Zach Gilford, “Friday Night Lights”), is taking her to court for custody of their child.
The first two seasons had some thrilling moments as the women tangled with both criminal under world figures and law enforce ment, but the heart of the series is rooted in their relationships with each other and their family lives, -
ers. Beth and Dean’s marriage has its ups and downs as she becomes the de facto leader of the group.

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX “Ozark” Season 3
Jason Bateman (“Arrested Development”) and Laura Linney (“The Big C”) return as Marty and Wendy Byrde in the Season 3 premiere of “Ozark” on Friday, March 27. When we met Marty in Season 1, he was a financial adviser who got himself into trouble skimming profits from the Mexican drug cartel. He uprooted his family and moved to the Ozarks, but he wasn’t able to outrun all of his problems. He began laundering money for the cartel and working to keep them happy, while also trying to keep his family together. In Season 2, Wendy became increasingly involved with the cartel, and Marty came up with a plan to launder money by opening a casino. Season 3 opens six months after the Season 2 finale, with the casino now fully operational. Loving the power that comes with working with the cartel, Wendy begins planning for expansion with the help of the cartel’s leader, Omar Navarro (Felix Solis, “The Family”), and their lawyer, Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer, “Jessica Jones”).
“Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution”
Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act with the premiere of this heartwarming documentary on Wednesday, March 25. Directed by Emmy winner Nicole Newnham (“Collisions,” 2016) and film mixer Jim LeBrecht, “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution” looks at the struggles faced by America’s largest minority and the camp that helped to change the lives of millions. Camp Jened opened in the 1970s as a rundown camp for the handicapped, but it quickly became a paradise for its campers, giving them a place where they felt a sense of belonging and starting a movement that would impact the disabled for years to come. Don’t miss this fascinating documentary that is executive produced by former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.
“Unorthodox”
Based on the bestselling memoir by Deborah Feldman, don’t miss the premiere of this powerful series on Thursday, March 26. Shira Haas (“The Conductor”) stars as Esther Shapiro, a young woman who has been raised by an ultra-orthodox Jewish family in New York. On the day of her arranged marriage, she suddenly runs away, abandoning her religious community and heading to Berlin to live her life as she sees fit.
WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME
“Luther” Season 5
After a four-year hiatus, this popular crime drama returned to air its fifth and final season last year on BBC One, and it debuts on Prime on Monday, March 23. Idris Elba (“Molly’s Game,” 2017) stars as the eponymous Det. John Luther. With only four hour-long episodes, Season 5 jumps right into the action, picking up with Luther being kidnapped by gang boss George Cornelius’ (Patrick Malahide, “Indian Summers”) cronies and interrogated for information about the criminal’s son, who has been kidnapped. Also, vicious killer Jeremy Lake (Enzo Cilenti, “Jekyll & Hyde”) has been on a killing spree since his lair was discovered, and Luther must work with Det. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” 2016) to track him down.
“Making the Cut”
Fashionistas of the world unite on the runway in the premiere of this new reality series on Friday, March 27. “Project Runway” hosts Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum lead the way in this series, which is a competition between 12 designers from around the world who are looking to make a name for themselves in the fashion industry. While the show is similar in concept to “Project Runway,” it takes things
to the next level for these designers, pushing them to turn their work into a universal brand, and focusing not solely on design skills but also entrepreneurial skills. The contestants are fighting for both a $1-million investment in their brand and the chance to create an exclusive line for Amazon Fashion. Each episode features challenges that have the contestants traveling all over the world, with stops in Paris, Tokyo and New York, and which are designed to be inclusive, catering to all ages and sizes so that, while their designs are unique, they are still wearable. In a fun twist for all fashionistas watching at home, the winning design from each episode will be made available to purchase on Amazon for less than $100.

Good news if you’re a fan of food trucks: the trend is still going strong. According to IBISWorld industry stats, there are 25,476 food trucks operating in the U.S. and the market is only expected to grow in 2020.
If you want a glimpse of the future, tune in to Food Network this week to meet the next wave of aspiring food truck operators. Another season of “The Great Food Truck Race” rolls out Thursday, March 26, and in marked contrast with last season’s “Holiday Hustle” winter theme, this edition will be basking in the California sunshine.
The weekly challenges and exotic California Gold Coast locales
are different, but the format remains the same. Each week, the truck teams will race to a new location to face new challenges and cook up new menu items. As always, they’ll have to sell as much food as possible to make a profit because the team that earns the least will be eliminated at the end of the episode. And the last two teams will have to pull out all the stops to win the $50,000 prize.
These are your truck teams for this season: Crystal’s Comfort Food, known for sweet and spicy wings; health-conscious Eat My Crust; aptly named Lunch Ladies; Indian Tex-Mex purveyor Mystikka Masala; Super Sope and its Mexican cuisine; and Bachelor Kitchen and Team Fat Kid, both specializing in Tex-Mex.
In the season premiere, all seven teams start their journey in the city that popularized taco trucks, Los Angeles. But if you’re hoping to see messy tacos laden with toppings, you’ll be disappointed: celeb chef/host Tyler Florence will challenge the teams to cook and sell luxury versions of traditional fare.
“The Great Food Truck Race” isn’t the only mobile food-focused show on TV but it was the first one. Since its debut in 2010, the series and its host have been
credited with bringing the street food scene into the mainstream consciousness. The novelty of the concept may have worn off but the popularity endures, and it’s a markedly different scene today.
Florence summed it up best in an interview with The Daily Meal: “Trying to engage in a conversation about food trucks was impossible in 2010. People were telling me that there was no way they’d eat from a ‘roach coach.’ Think about how far we’ve come since then.”
