Welcome to Nisswa

We invite you to join us in Nisswa, Minnesota, nestled in the heart of the lakes area. We have been a destination for visitors for more than a century. Generation after generation comes to the area that many call their second home. What keeps them coming back? It could be the beautiful landscape that includes trees and water wherever you look. The Paul Bunyan State Trail runs right through town; and whether you are walking or biking, you will be sure to take in many photoworthy moments. It could be our charming downtown area that boasts door after door of funfilled shopping. There are over 50 shops running up and down both sides of the street, as well as down the side streets. There are coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, gift shops, candy stores and even a brewery. It is always nice to see our locals interacting with our visitors to make sure they are on track to have as much fun here as possible. Maybe is it our event-filled calendar? It has been said that we can fill the town to maximum capacity. We like to celebrate every season here in Nisswa. In the summer, every week we hold our extremely popular turtle races. Oh, and let’s not forget our Freedom Days celebration on July 3. In September, we hold our annual Fall Festival & Smokin’ Hot BBQ Contest. The 6

NISSWA CHAMBER PREMIER EVENTS 2021 The Nisswa Chamber of Commerce organizes and executes four premier events in downtown Nisswa: Nisswa Turtle Races on Wednesdays through summer, Freedom Days on July 3, Fall Festival & Smokin’ Hot BBQ Challenge in mid-September and the City of Lights Festival at the end of November. These events are longtime, popular traditions in Nisswa. The chamber also partners with community organizations and event planners to host many other fun events in our community throughout the year. We look at Nisswa as the event hub of the Brainerd lakes area. www.nisswa.com

The 58th year of Nisswa Turtle Races will kick off when the season starts Wednesday, June 2, at the downtown Turtle Track. Registration starts at 1 p.m., and for $5 you can race a turtle and get a commemorative Turtle Race button. Racing gets underway at 2 p.m., no matter what the weather. Turtle Races traditionally draw hundreds of participants from all over the country each week. The official Turtle Track is located in the Chamber Welcome Center parking lot, along the Paul Bunyan State Trail in downtown Nisswa. Starting with heat races, 20 racers at a time cheer as their turtles race for the yellow finish line. The winner of each heat race receives prizes and a winner’s ribbon, and they get to race again for a chance to be the Grand Champion of the day. Not only does the Grand Champion win additional prizes, they get a Turtle Race medal.

Nisswa Turtle Races: Wednesdays, June 2-Aug. 18

Then the specialty races take place. Anyone who has registered and has a Turtle Race button can participate in the following five specialty races: Resort Race (for those staying at a resort), Tiny Tots Race (for ages 5 years and under), Out of State/Out of Country Race, Grandparents Race and Locals Race. The Locals Race is highly competitive because these local participants have been

racing turtles for their entire lives. The specialty race winners receive ribbons and prizes, too. The Nisswa Turtle Races are a popular tradition for many families who visit the Brainerd lakes area each year. Kids of all ages race turtles, from babies to greatgrandparents. The turtle wranglers and volunteers get a chance to race at the end of the specialty races as well. The turtle wranglers are from the local nonprofit Mounted Eagles Therapeutic Horsemanship Program. They help wrangle the turtles during the Nisswa Turtle Race season and then release the turtles back into their native habitat at the end of each racing season. Whether you’re a veteran turtle racer, a first-time racer, a spectator or cheerleader, come to the downtown Nisswa Turtle Track for a great time at 2 p.m. Wednesdays throughout the summer. www.nisswa.com

Dress in red, white & blue and come to Nisswa!

The Brainerd lakes area is definitely the place to be for the Fourth of July holiday, when thousands of visitors descend upon the area to don their red, white and blue to enjoy parades, music, food and fireworks with friends and family. Nisswa hosts its annual Freedom Days Festival on July 3 every year, which falls on Saturday in 2021. Activities throughout the day include Turtle Races, Water Wars, live music and a rotating list of other fun activities. Of course, the day’s biggest event is the Freedom Days Parade at 7 p.m. on Main Street. Spectators line both sides of the street to watch the parade that features floats, veterans’ groups, a high school marching band, clowns, local royalty, fire trucks and much more. It’s one of the best parades in the Brainerd lakes area. The Nisswa Freedom Days Parade is a favorite among spectators because not only is it at night when the hot July www.nisswa.com

summer sun isn’t as scorching, but there is a ton of candy for the kids. The parade lasts about an hour and is less than one mile in length, which the parade participants love. An estimated 8,000-12,000 people come to Nisswa on July 3 to enjoy the festivities. Families line up early with their blankets and lawn chairs to find their perfect spot to view the parade. If it’s fireworks you love, you won’t

be disappointed. You’ll find lots of options during the week of the Fourth in the lakes area, with fireworks lighting up the night sky on several different nights. In Nisswa, fireworks are typically July 2 with our partner, Grand View Lodge, at their Party at the Pines, which also features music and food. Stay in downtown Nisswa after the parade for continued entertainment. You’ll also have the opportunity to take in more parades - enjoy the Pequot Lakes Stars & Stripes Parade at noon July 4, followed by a parade at 4 p.m. in Brainerd and fireworks in Brainerd that night. In addition, most of the big resorts in the lakes area shoot off fireworks, plus there are independent fireworks shows around many area lakes and even more shows hosted by local communities. The Brainerd lakes area is definitely the place to celebrate your Fourth of July week. 2021 Nisswa Destination Guide

Fall Festival & Smokin’ Hot BBQ: Saturday, Sept. 18 Awaken all your senses in downtown Nisswa!

Fall in the Brainerd lakes area is beyond spectacular with the dazzling gold, orange and red leaves on the trees and the crisp air calling for a cozy sweatshirt. Enjoy this change in seasons by venturing to the Nisswa Fall Festival & Smokin’ Hot BBQ Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 18, in downtown Nisswa. The Nisswa Fall Festival has been a community tradition for 46 years. The morning kicks off bright and early with the Nisswa Fire Department serving a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the fire hall, followed by the Bridges of Hope Run for Hope that starts and ends downtown. Sign up to run a 5K, 10K or kids’ run. The day’s activities include a medallion hunt, with the first clue posted at 10 a.m. with more to follow at various merchants’ stores. Have fun deciphering the clues and searching the area to find the medallion and collect a cash prize. KIDZONE, where kids are king, starts at 10 a.m. at the Pioneer Village. 14

2021 Nisswa Destination Guide

Pay just $5 for a wristband and kids can play all day, exert some energy and display their creativity with a variety of fun activities, including face painting and crafts. KIDZONE is presented by the Nisswa Area Historical Society. The day includes the 15th annual Smokin’ Hot BBQ Challenge, which you can’t miss with the tantalizing smell of barbecue filling the Nisswa air. Backyard barbecue enthusiasts from Minnesota and the Midwest come

to compete in a barbecue rib contest where they can win coveted cash prizes, trophies and bragging rights. Competitors begin cooking their ribs early in the morning, so the whole town soon fills with the wonderful smell of barbecue and the sound of back and forth bantering and conversation. By late afternoon, mouth-watering ribs and all the fixings are ready to eat. Be sure to check the schedule tickets to eat ribs go on sale early, around 1 p.m., and VIP ticket holders eat around 4 p.m. Live music begins in the early afternoon and goes throughout the night. The Nisswa Chamber of Commerce partners with Ye Old Pickle Factory, which is Nisswa’s municipal bar, and Schaefer’s Foods, which is the locally owned grocery store, to provide a bean bag tournament, outdoor stage, beer garden/whiskey bar, barbecue and a relaxed atmosphere that will have you coming back year after year. www.nisswa.com

Usher in the holidays with shopping, fireworks!

Downtown Nisswa is definitely the best place to spend the day after Thanksgiving every year - it’s like stepping into a holiday movie scene or a Norman Rockwell painting. You won’t want to miss it! So come and celebrate both the Thanksgiving and the Christmas season at the 40th annual Nisswa City of Lights Festival on Friday, Nov. 26. It’s a day - a weekend, really - when downtown Nisswa focuses on experiencing a beautiful winter festival while many people are focused on Black Friday bargain shopping. Thousands of Christmas lights are strung throughout downtown, from merchants’ stores to the chamber gazebo to all trees both small and tall. Store windows are decorated for the season and the feel of Christmas is in the air. Nisswa truly turns into an absolutely magical place on this day. The festival begins mid-afternoon when people gather around bonfires that are lit along the Paul Bunyan Trail and Main Street, take horse-drawn wagons through town, and let children write letters to Santa and place them in a mailbox. www.nisswa.com

Step into the caboose to hear “The Polar Express” story being read or join in as Christmas carolers from local churches and schools roam the streets singing. See live reindeer and get your picture taken with them while sitting in a sleigh. The Nisswa Area Historical Society’s Pioneer Village is aglow with hundreds of luminaries lighting the walkway that is the backdrop for several activities, including a live nativity scene, free cider and mini doughnuts and the Love Lights a Tree program. The Love Lights a Tree ceremony is a beautiful tradition where people can purchase a tree light as a visual tribute to

remember, acknowledge and celebrate the lives of loved ones. Each purchase comes with a personalized tree ornament to take home. At 5:30 p.m., all the Christmas lights are turned on throughout town for a truly magnificent sight and Santa arrives atop the city fire truck to hear children’s wishes at the gazebo at 6 p.m. Fireworks are the finale of this family focused event and are launched from the Nisswa City Park at 7:30 p.m. The park is the perfect location to shoot off the fireworks show, centering the display directly over the ball field and the Turtle Track area of downtown. There’s not a bad spot in town to view the fireworks. Whether you’ve experienced them once, twice, or not at all, cold weather fireworks are a must see, especially against a new blanket of fluffy, white snow. Be sure to buy Blinkie Lights, as well as a $5 commemorative City of Lights button to get discounts at more than 75 lakes area stores from Black Friday through Dec 31. The Nisswa City of Lights Festival is always held the Friday after Thanksgiving. 2021 Nisswa Destination Guide 15

PAUL BUNYAN TRAIL

Paul Bunyan Trail remains popular with outdoor enthusiasts

The Paul Bunyan State Trail, a multi-use recreational trail built on a former railroad line between Brainerd and Bemidji, continues as one of the most popular trails in Minnesota. The trail, which was first paved in 1992 and named after the giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan, is the longest continuously paved trail in the United States. And it travels right through the heart of downtown Nisswa. The route was part of the Burlington Northern Railroad lines abandoned in 1983. The trail currently covers a distance of 120 miles. The southern extension, completed in 2012, moved the southern terminus to Crow Wing State Park. The route through Bemidji currently follows city roads until an off-road path can be secured. The Paul Bunyan State Trail intersects with the Heartland State Trail in Walker, and in Bemidji joins the Blue Ox Trail, which continues 110 miles to the Canada-United States border. Terry McGaughey, who passed away in 2010, is credited with the idea for the conception of the Paul Bunyan Trail in 1983 after the announcement of the closing of the Burlington Northern Railroad. With more than 25 years of his life dedicated to promoting, lobbying and planning meetings in all 15 trail towns in his own free time, McGaughey earned the respect of the Brainerd lakes area as well as the connecting trail towns. His love for nature and his strong desire to keep our lakes area beautiful is a testament to 22 2021 Nisswa Destination Guide

the Paul Bunyan Trail and to the appeal of the northwoods. In May 1994, the Department of Natural Resource’s master plan for the trail was adopted by the state, and the following year a 10-foot-wide bituminous treadway was paved for use by bicyclists, inline skaters and hikers. The first 50 miles of the trail were paved in 1992. Today, at 210 miles, the adjoining Paul Bunyan and Blue Ox (Bemidji to International Falls) trails form one of the longest contiguous railroad bed conversion trails in the nation. And one of the most scenic. It is easy to understand the appeal of the Paul Bunyan Trail. Its 100 miles wind around the shores of 21 lakes and over nine rivers or streams. Very little of the trail crosses open fields or immediately borders highways; most of the route snakes through gently rolling landscapes covered in stately pine forests and populated by an abundance of diverse flora and fauna. Towns are situated at comfortable 8-10 mile intervals, with state parks at both the north and south ends of the trail. The Paul Bunyan Trail intersects with several planned or proposed connecting trail routes, including a network of more than 1,200 miles of snowmobile trails. The Paul Bunyan is one of the most popular trails in the state. In the opening

1992-93 snowmobiling season, counters were placed along the trail to record the number of visitor occasions. Local citizens and trail supporters were astonished at

the numbers. The subsequent volume of use has generated significant economic impact on the trail’s bordering communities.

Women in racing I found the need for speed at BIR BY PAM DORION For years, drag racing was known as a man’s sport, until Shirley Muldowney, “The First Lady of Drag Racing,” made her appearance in 1958. As the years have clicked by, more and more women are racing in all kinds of different auto sports. As a matter of fact, our local speedway - Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) - is owned by a woman.

All of this was just racing history to me, until my husband bought me my dream car - a 2015 Shark Gray Corvette. As I was learning to drive it, my husband suggested we take it to BIR. I messed around a little bit on the road course, and then one day he thought I should try the Wednesday night street drags, where anyone can bring a car and race it down the track.

I thought that sounded very safe and fun, so for $25 and a helmet, why wouldn’t I? When I looked around, I could not believe all the women I saw participating in this event. I instantly fell in love and found the need for speed! I love the exhilarating feeling when you are about to take off. I decided to join the Muscle Car Series the next summer. I quickly noticed again just how many women racers there were. The first race was filled with tips from other drivers and many great memories were made. I love to visit and as I made my rounds in the campground, I realized it is whole families out racing or spectating. Drag racing at BIR has now become a huge part of my family. I’ve been racing for three years, and my husband, Cam, has been racing his Mustang for five years. Our daughter, Sydney, started racing in 2020 in the Truck Series. And our son, Thomas, has participated in ice racing for years and is working on his Mustang to race in 2021. I wonder if Shirley Muldowney knows what she started? www.nisswa.com

snowmobiles compete on an oval course on open water. You’ll never see anything more entertaining. The highlight of the 2021 schedule, like every year, will be the 39th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, which is scheduled for Aug. 19-22, 2021. This is a chance for race fans to see the stars of the National Hot Rod Association during three days of nitro-fueled drag racing. Here’s what you’ll see: the best drag racers in the world, 11,000-horsepower dragsters going more than 330 mph, open pits where fans can get up close to the teams as they rebuild the cars, the legendary Zoo campground that defies explanation, live music and a legion of crazed fans that can’t get enough NHRA racing. Fans aren’t limited to being spectators at BIR, though. In fact, BIR has opportunities almost every week for people to get behind the wheel and

The BIR Performance Driving School is a great chance to learn how to handle a car at high speeds, and the drag strip is open to those who want to give drag racing a try during the NAPA Street Legals on select Wednesday nights. Instruction is also available for Superbike riding, autocross and drifting. And most of BIR’s racing events include categories for novice racers who are giving it a try. 2021 Nisswa Destination Guide

The Brainerd Lakes Area was forever changed in 1940 with the founding of Cragun’s Resort on Gull Lake. Merrill Cragun Jr., better known to all as “Dutch,” was 8 years old when his parents, Merrill Sr. and Louise, started their now famous lakes area resort located in the Pine Beach Area on Steamboat Bay on the south shore of Gull Lake. Now at 88, Dutch has gone from bait boy to resort owner alongside his wife, Irma. When Dutch started working in the family business he was in charge of bait, which included worms, minnows and frogs. He was 9 when Cragun’s Resort officially welcomed guests into the resort in 1941. He stood by as his parents turned tax-forfeited land into what is now a year-round vacation destination that now has more than 200 lodging options, five different dining experiences, three golf courses, more than 400 employees and eight decades of rich history. Dutch remembers when the short summer-only resort season lasted all of nine weeks from around mid-June to just before Labor Day. His home office is a

testament to all the traveling the Craguns did in the winter months when there was no resort to run. “Nothing happened on Memorial Day,” he said. “Some fishing, but no families. Absolutely too far from the Twin Cities.” Then snowmobilers and other winter visitors started showing interest in the resort, but the cabins weren’t winterized and there was no circulating pump to keep the water from freezing. Dutch recalls the first year golf became an amenity at the resort. Hot dogs and hamburgers were sold out of a tent before the clubhouse was built. He’ll especially never forget his round of golf with former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura; the 20-year-old newspaper article is framed and still in his home office. Much has changed since those early days. Today the resort is in the midst of a $20 million expansion and remodel project that started in 2015. Lobby areas, hotel rooms, cabins, golf courses and the marina have all seen upgraded facilities and amenities. Visitors can now rent new pontoons, speedboats, Jet Skis,

stand-up paddleboards, row boats, canoes and bicycles to enhance their outdoor experience. Inside, the resort’s hotel-style rooms are undergoing renovations, with new electric fireplaces, carpeting, sliding glass doors and overall layouts. What hasn’t changed, though, is the lake view present from every room, except for those that

are poolside. And except for the cabins on the golf courses, 90% of the cabins also boast lake views. There are 65 in total, with 21 of them having at least four bedrooms, offering great accommodations for large groups and family reunions. Cragun’s recently acquired the North Star, a yacht that cruises Gull Lake with

guests from May through October, with both private and public cruising options. Golfers have three courses to choose from at Cragun’s - Dutch’s Legacy, Bobby’s Legacy and the Reversible 9. At the Reversible 9, you can even play foot golf, which is a combination of soccer and golf that’s fun for the whole family.

Stay in Nisswa - we offer every type of accommodation

The Nisswa area offers lodging for any type of getaway you plan. Whether you’re visiting for a family vacation, romantic getaway or corporate retreat - even if you’re just stopping for a night - we have a place where you’ll love to stay. Within a 30-mile radius of Nisswa, you have your pick from mom and pop resorts, hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and large resorts.

The various properties can include golf courses, restaurants, water parks, spas and recreational opportunities like boating, skiing and paddle boarding. If you’re looking for an old-fashioned cabin with basic amenities on a beautiful, clean lake, come to the Nisswa area. With hundreds of lakes within close proximity, you can choose to stay on a large body of water or a very small one.

Our peaceful surroundings are ideal for family and making lasting memories

picnic tables, lawn chairs & grills for all cabins tennis court • boat launch boat & motor rental lakefront cabins with safe, sandy beach excellent fishing spring and fall

If you prefer a big resort, the Nisswa area can accommodate you. You can golf or play tennis in the morning, have a midday lunch or snack, hit the beach or pool for some fun in the sun, eat an amazing dinner and listen to live music without ever leaving the resort. Perhaps you want to try one of the local hotels. Some of the finest hotels in the Midwest are right here in the Brainerd lakes area, offering indoor and outdoor swimming pools and water parks. Or skip the pool and go jump in the lake - area lakes are pristine and well taken care of so enjoy them whether you’re swimming, boating, fishing or just hanging out. The Brainerd lakes area has amazing attractions for all ages. Many of the lodging properties offer organized kids’ activities, with kids’ clubs and/or day care options to give you a break for some alone time. Whether a large resort or a small one, a hotel or a bed and breakfast, there’s something for everyone at any age. As an added benefit, most lodging properties are open year-round. Of course, summer is the busiest season, but spring is beautiful when the ice comes off the lake and the wildlife returns. Fall is breathtakingly gorgeous with the changing color of the leaves and crisp air; winter is remarkable with snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing; and spring is a great time to watch the ice go off the lakes and fish again on open water. An added bonus is that fishing and shopping in the lakes area is great all year long.

brewery that relocated to Nisswa in 2020. Roundhouse Brewery moved to the building off Highway 371 that previously housed Nisswa’s first craft brewery. Roundhouse, which opened in 2016, was originally located at the Northern Pacific Center in Brainerd. “Since then we’ve experienced growth because we’ve got a fantastic product and wonderful staff,” said co-owner Mark Lelwica. “We’re able to create a very warm setting for people to enjoy.” Lelwica and co-owner Dan Meyer first considered the move when their lease at the NP Center was coming up for renewal. Considering the need for expansion, they looked at their options and found that not only was a larger space available in Nisswa, but since it was formerly the home of Gull Dam Brewing Company, it was already equipped with brewing equipment. www.nisswa.com

“The building at Gull Dam was available as an option,” Lelwica said. “We made that decision because we’d be able to move into the location with minimal build up and minimal change of structure as it was. The equipment was still in place in the Gull Dam building and that came along with the purchase as well.” The new, larger location also has space to expand into more entertainment, which the owners believe to be important to the growth of the Roundhouse brand. “We are in the beer industry,” Lelwica said. “But it’s also evolved more into an entertainment industry. We’ve really become a gathering space and we wanted to kind of embrace that and grow into it.” The building will allow them the flexibility to expand their entertainment and brewing operation. There is a large outdoor space with a stage and ample space indoors as well. “Going forward we’ll be able to not just to be a brewery experience, but we’ll also be able to provide a host to private events,” Lelwica said, noting plans include a kitchen and the wreck room, which will start as an ax throwing room to provide another source for entertainment. When you’re visiting Nisswa, don’t forget to enjoy all the amenities the area has to offer, including the awesome craft breweries. www.nisswa.com

Top golf holes in lakes area Golf Digest Magazine has rated the Nisswa/Brainerd lakes area as one of the top 50 golf destinations in the world. Here are examples of some of the better holes to play among the 18-hole courses in the area:

three more bunkers guarding this narrow green help define this 450- to 294-yard hole. Cut through hardwoods, enjoy the quiet while battling this difficult, but fair test of golf.

right, choosing how much of the fairway to bite off and then executing the shot is key. Legacy Lake looms large along the right side of the fairway, but four bunkers separate you from a watery doom. Finding the fairway is key to reaching this long and large green.

Grand View’s The Marsh at The Pines, Hole 5 (par 3)

Arguably the best view from the tee box at The Pines. This 175- to 101-yard par 3 has an elevated tee box to display wetlands and a bunker short and a sloping hill right. The tiered green looks inviting, but trust your yardage.

Par is a great score on this difficult 425to 345-yard closing hole. Elevated tee boxes put the water running along the left of the fairway more into play. Once on the fairway players can get a feeling of coming home on a British Open style course as the clubhouse and resort surround the green. With water front left of the green and trees to the right, this elevated green is hard to hit and once on, be prepared for a difficult putt.

Two really good shots are needed to attack this 516- to 409-yard hole nestled in the northeast corner of the property. The fairway is wide, but two fairway bunkers pinch the landing area. The difficulty comes from an elevated green, which slopes from back to front - making it hard to get a second shot near the hole. A front left bunker guards the green.

The pro shop offers the latest trends in men’s and women’s golf apparel, accessories and golf items.

Bobby’s Legacy, a Golf Digest 4 ½ star-rated course, was named after its famed designer, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. This is a “shot-makers” dream, with elevated tees, shorter holes and longer, more traditional par 4s and 5s, along with many split fairways and multiple tees that makes Bobby’s Legacy the ultimate in playability for all.

Come to Nisswa it’s easy to get here

When you come to Nisswa, you’ll quickly learn there is no better place to visit, vacation, live, work or play. You’ll find it’s quite easy to get here - we’re located in the heart of central Minnesota, exactly where the heart on the map to the right indicates. We’re just 2.5 hours from Minneapolis, Fargo and Duluth. Nisswa is an easy jaunt from just about anywhere. Look at a Minnesota state map and find where State Highways 371 and 210 intersect. This intersection marks the cities of Brainerd and Baxter, which are only 16 miles straight south of downtown Nisswa via a four-lane highway. People travel to Nisswa from across the United States and abroad. Our Midwest friends come here often, some staying at our array of lodging options and others

staying at their seasonal homes. It doesn’t matter the stay, everyone loves to come and play in Nisswa. Come to us by car, by plane or by train. If coming by car, check out the map on this page showing various distances. Know you can drive right to Nisswa via a four-lane highway, yet quickly escape the urban setting for a relaxing, peaceful upnorth experience. If traveling by airplane, you can fly from almost anywhere inside or outside the United States to the Minneapolis/ St. Paul International Airport (MSP). Once you’ve arrived at the airport, catch a shuttle or rent a car to drive the 2.5 hours north to Nisswa, or catch another plane and fly directly to the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport in less than an hour. The Brainerd airport is a mere 20 miles south of Nisswa.

If you venture just a little bit northwest of Nisswa, a few miles down County Road 29 just off Highway 371, you’ll find Double T Acres, a berry farm where you can relax, unwind and spend time outdoors in a scenic setting. In fact, owners Todd and Tracy Linbo - recent transplants to Nisswa - said their goal is for Double T Acres to give people a place to spend time outdoors with friends and family, to find peace and joy, and to create lasting memories. “We know how busy life can get. We want to provide a place where friends and families slow down the pace of life and create meaningful, memorable experiences - together,” their website says. The Linbos opened Double T Acres to the public in 2020. They thank all the people who came out last year, and they - along with their two Labs, Niko and Teak - are eager to greet customers again in 2021. Double T Acres offers asparagus starting in mid-May, which the Linbos sell at the Nisswa Farmers Market held Thursday mornings through summer and fall in the Nisswa American Legion parking lot. People can also stop by the farm for asparagus. www.nisswa.com

At the beginning of July, two varieties of tart cherries start to ripen, and a few weeks later four varieties of raspberries and five varieties of blueberries are ready to be picked in July and August. In September, pumpkins, ornamental corn, gourds, mums and apples are available. The mums and apples are sourced from other farmers. Double T Acres does not grow strawberries, and the Linbos happily send people to the Wallin Berry Farm on County Road 18 in Nisswa for that fruit. People pick their own berries, and the Linbos also sell them at the Nisswa Farmers Market and work with area bakeries and restaurants. “So it’s been pretty neat to work with other small businesses in the area to build on each other’s product lines,” Tracy said. They also enjoyed working with a local community meals program in Pine River-Backus to donate vegetables for free meals to those in need. Last summer and fall they offered hot apple cider and ice cream samples to customers. “Multi-generations come out and pick berries and have a bowl of ice cream with raspberry caramel sauce,” Tracy said, noting the raspberry caramel sauce is made by Wildflower Chocolate in Nisswa using raspberries from the farm. www.nisswa.com

The farm also offers fresh flowers through summer and fall, and the Linbos did some fall decorating for businesses in Nisswa. A goal is to add field to table events in the future, among other plans. The Linbos knew they’d be permanent residents of Nisswa one day after buying a home on Nisswa Lake eight years ago, traveling to the lake nearly every weekend from their former homes in Iowa and South Dakota. “Our goal was to get to Nisswa and do something up here,” Tracy said. They even had the name “Double T” - for Todd and Tracy - picked out, adding “Acres” when they bought the 40 acres of land, of which five acres are fenced for the berry farm.

Buying a berry farm wasn’t exactly their goal. One weekend after taking their UTV riding in the Foothills State Forest, they passed the farm on their way home and thought it would be fun to pick berries. Then they saw the “For Sale” sign. Both Linbos had worked in agriculture for nearly 30 years, and the farm definitely piqued their interest. They bought it and moved to their Nisswa Lake home to become permanent residents. Tracy still works remotely, while Todd manages the farm operations. “We’re very excited to be back in Minnesota, working in agriculture and providing a joyful experience for people,” Tracy said.

Renovations complete at Nisswa Elementary School

Nisswa Elementary School, which is part of the Brainerd School District, started the 2020-21 school year in what felt like a brand new building. The elementary school’s $12 million improvement and expansion project that got underway in late May 2019 is now complete. The renovations and additions increased space and improved security at the school.

While the existing building remains, it all looks brand new and modern. The renovation project was part of a Brainerd School District facilities improvement project to improve schools throughout the district. Nisswa School now boasts a new main entrance location toward the middle of the school with the Brainerd School District “B” standing out on a Warrior blue pillar

and “Nisswa Elementary” in big Warrior blue letters. The entrance leads to a roomy and secure office area. Once inside the school, lockers no longer line the hallways. Instead, they are in locker bays in the first- through fourthgrade areas. Early childhood and kindergarten classrooms occupy the south part of the school with their own emergency exit

outside if needed. First and second grades are in a lower level area in the middle of the school, with third and fourth grades above them in a newly built second story. These classrooms are all located off a commons area on both levels. The school has a full-size gym now, as well as a second gym, two alternative classrooms, an enlarged cafeteria and remodeled kitchen. The end result is larger spaces to accommodate students and, most important, security and the ability to lock down certain parts of the school building as other parts are in use. Specifically, the school now has: ► A second gym next to the existing gym to offer a full-size basketball court and drop-down partition. This will allow two gym classes to take place at the same time, as well as community use of the gyms for basketball, volleyball and pickleball leagues, etc. The stage remained and a lift was added to make it handicap-accessible. ► Two levels of classrooms off the gym on the School Street side of the building, with first- and second-grade classrooms on the lower level and thirdand fourth-grade classrooms on the upper level. This includes an elevator. By building a second level in this spot, the school was able to keep its playground and baseball field areas, which are both used by the community. Also, the school building isn’t so spread out. ► The new main entrance that is more obvious than the previous entrance. This entrance will be locked when the school day starts so all visitors will have to enter through the office. Nisswa School offers three classrooms per grade, two early childhood classrooms and one Kinder Club room, with two flexible classrooms to use if there is an influx of students. Security measures will allow different parts of the school to be locked when other parts are in use by the community. That area near the Nisswa Children’s Community Library will be an after-hours entrance into the school so the public can use the library and gyms, with the rest of school locked and inaccessible. Only in Nisswa ► The Nisswa American Legion collects countless school supplies for Nisswa students every year. ► Rafferty’s Pizza in Nisswa provides free pizza incentives for students throughout the year.

Tourism travel to lakes area has evolved over the years The lakes area attracts a steady stream of traffic from all directions, especially during the busy summer months. The Nisswa area has one of the longest histories of tourism in the state, evolving over the past century and dating back to the Ojibwe mainly navigating by canoe or walking. Eventually, a trail was created that connected the Twin Cities and northern Minnesota. The Leech Lake Trail passed through Main Street in Nisswa and in front of the current Nisswa Area Historical Society building. People began using any conveyance possible, including horse and wagon and horseback, as trails were carved through the lakes area. Then came the biggest change in tourist travel to the Nisswa area with the introduction of the railroad. One of the first sets of tracks cut partially on logging trails was a short line from Brainerd to Hubert Station near Lake Hubert in 1895. A passenger on the first train ride was Col. Freeman Thorp, who painted portraits of seven U.S. presidents and now has a short street connecting Highway 371 and Hazelwood Drive named after him. Other passengers included many Brainerd residents who purchased homes on Nisswa area lakes. One of the biggest developments that changed the history of downtown Nisswa was the tracks extending north from Hubert Station were originally constructed northwest along County State Aid Highway 77 north and then across Gull Lake toward Lake Shore. The Northern Pacific Railroad was going through Brainerd, and the Brainerd/ Northern Minnesota Railroad was planned to travel through Walker and eventually

International Falls. The tracks from Hubert Station to the Bar Harbor area were quickly torn up, and new tracks were started going north toward Walker. That course cut through the community that would eventually be known as Nisswa, a town name that officially switched from Smiley Township in 1908. The original train stop in Nisswa was on Poplar Street, but eventually moved a few blocks south near County Road 18 since the trains had trouble gaining speed heading north because of the landscape incline. Tourists, many from the Twin Cities, began traveling north by train and stopping in Nisswa. They would then take various forms of travel to reach the growing number of resorts constructed on area lakes. Growth came as word quickly spread around the state and Upper Midwest about Nisswa’s quality fishing and recreational boating on area lakes. Train travel did increase for years during the summer months with many stops heading north to Bemidji on the Paul Bunyan Express. The growth and popularity of automotive travel expanded around the state in the 1920s and 1930s, although most of the early roads were narrow, single lanes with a dirt surface. Highway 371, a main road traveling north for tourists from the Twin Cities and central Minnesota since the 1930s, has had various upgrades with slight route adjustments between Brainerd and Pequot Lakes. Highway 371 eventually became an all four-lane road from the Twin Cities through Pequot Lakes. The changes have allowed visitors to make a quicker trip to get started on their vacation.

Bicycles have evolved over the years with popularity growth Bicycling has been a popular activity in Minnesota since the late 19th century. Since its start, the sport has evolved into many varieties of two-wheeled, pedaldriven bicycles powered by millions of cyclists. Evolving along with the popularity of bicycles is the development of tar and dirt trails across the state of more than 10,000 lakes. Since 2001, Minnesota has claimed to have more miles of bike trails than any other state in the country. Minnesota was also ranked the second-most bicyclefriendly state behind Washington in 2017. The state’s extensive network of trails has helped make cycling a popular activity - especially in the Brainerd lakes area. The area has become popular for biking with the combination of the Paul Bunyan Trail, first paved in 1992, and the growth of the Cuyuna Range Bike Trail System around the Crosby area.

History of bicycles, trails Bicycles were an extremely popular means of personal transportation in the early 20th century before the automobile became more widely available. A bike boom occurred across the country in the 1960s and 1970s, as a combination of factors renewed interest in cycling. Many bike shops in Minnesota were founded in this period, and they began selling products from new companies. The state began building trails, like the Paul Bunyan Trail, along former railroad alignments. Minnesota has had a significant railroading history, but about half of the state’s rail lines have been abandoned, opening up the land for new development. The first paved rail trail in Minnesota was the Heartland State Trail in 1977. Trail building has continued at a rapid pace since then, and many rural rail trails have been credited with reviving the small towns they serve. Trails have been built by many different organizations across the state. While the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources operates a system of state trails, counties, cities and nonprofit organizations have also worked to build www.nisswa.com

bike paths. Most trails the DNR operates are multi-use trails, supporting a range of activities that include hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and wintertime activities like cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Minneapolis was home to the Rollerblade company, which popularized inline skating in the 1980s. Skaters also benefited from the trail system being built at the time, since they require smooth, paved surfaces.

Changing bicycle trends At mid-century there were two predominant bicycle styles for recreational cyclists in North America. Heavyweight cruiser bikes, preferred by the typical (hobby) cyclist, featuring balloon tires, pedal-driven “coaster” brakes and only one gear, were popular for their durability, comfort, streamlined appearance and a significant array of accessories (lights, bells, springer forks, speedometers, etc.).

Lighter cycles, with hand brakes, narrower tires and a three-speed hub gearing system, often imported from England, first became popular in the United States in the late 1950s. These comfortable, practical bicycles usually offered generator-powered headlamps, safety reflectors, kickstands and framemounted tire pumps. In the United States, the sports roadster was imported after World War II, and was known as the “English racer.” It quickly became popular with adult cyclists seeking an alternative to the traditional youth-oriented cruiser bicycle. While the English racer was no racing bike, it was faster and better for climbing hills than the cruiser, thanks to its lighter weight, tall wheels, narrow tires and internally geared rear hubs. In the late 1950s, U.S. manufacturers such as Schwinn began producing their own “lightweight” version of the English racer.
