Aspiring astronauts shoot for ‘Moonbase 8’
By Kyla Brewer TV Media
Imagine being isolated with little contact with the outside world and longing to go someplace far, far away. With everything going on in the world today, surely a lot of people can relate to such a premise, and a new comedy that takes a look at the lighter side of astronaut life might be just what the doctor ordered.
John C. Reilly (“Step Brothers,” 2008) stars as Cap, the leader of a group of astronauts living at a NASA moon base simulator in “Moonbase 8,” premiering Sunday, Nov. 8, on Showtime. His underlings include Fred Armisen (“Portlandia”) as Skip and Tim Heidecker (“Tim and Eric’s Bedtime Stories”) as Rook, fellow incompetent astronauts desperate to qualify for a lunar mission.
The six-episode, half-hour comedy series was created by Reilly, Armisen and Heidecker along with John Krisel (“Baskets”), who serves as the show’s director. All four men are also credited as writers of “Moonbase 8,” and they are all executive producers with Dave Kneebone (“The Eric Andre Show”). It’s been produced by A24 and Abso Lutely Productions.
While the notion of astronauts living essentially “quarantined” from the outside world might seem a bit apropos at the moment, the comedy has actually been in the
works since 2018 and was relatively recently picked up by Showtime.
“In a year when we have all been forced to come to terms with life in close quarters, we are happy to have landed this offbeat take on life in captivity with dreams of escaping to something grander,”
Showtime executive Jana Winograde said in an official news release when it was picked up in August. “While the show was produced before the pandemic, its subject matter is timely – and, thanks to Fred, Tim, John and Jonathan, its humor is timeless.”
The series is set in a remote area in the desert near Winslow, Arizona, where harsh conditions mimic some of the challenges the wouldbe astronauts might face in space. They diligently attempt to carry out their training, despite obvious ineptitude. Each of the eager, aspiring astronauts has his own reasons for wanting to get to the moon. In the trailer for the series, Cap explains that he’s screwed up his entire life, but if he gets to the moon, he’ll finally be considered a hero. Skip wants to carry on the legacy of his famous astronaut father, and Rook hopes to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ in space. However, when they run into trouble while trying to complete their training, they begin to question their sanity, their faith in each other and whether they really are capable of carrying out a mission to the moon.
It seems as if that’s a lot to unpack in a measly six episodes but, if anyone can do it, it’s Armisen, Reilly, Heidecker and Krisel. With years of experience in television and film, they have proven track records when it comes to comedy.
Armisen hails from the hallowed halls of Studio 8H, where legendary sketch comedy series “Saturday Night Live” has been filmed since its debut in 1975. He was a member of the “SNL” cast from 2002 to 2013, becoming known for his impressions of notable figures such as Barack Obama, Prince, Steve Jobs and Michael Bloomberg. He went on to co-create the comedy series
circles with his work in “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” (2007), “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006) and “Step Brothers” (2008). More recently, he earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as comedian Oliver Hardy in the 2018 film “Stan and Ollie.”
Heidecker is actually best known as one half of the comedy duo Tim & Eric, alongside Eric Wareheim (“Beef House”). He first gained fame for creating and starring in the Adult Swim animated series “Tom Goes to the Mayor” and built on that success in the comedy series “Tim and Eric Awe-

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX
“Dash & Lily”
We dare you to fall in love this holiday season with the new series “Dash & Lily,” coming to Netflix on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Based on Rachel Cohn and David Levithan’s adolescent fiction series, this eightepisode premiere season covers the events in their first book, “Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares.” When 16-year-old Lily (Midori Francis, “Ocean’s 8,” 2018) gets tired of her lack of luck in the love department, she solicits the help of her older — and much more experienced — brother, Langston (Troy Iwata, “Ray Donovan”), for advice. Ultimately deciding to leave a little red notebook atop a shelf in her favorite bookshop hoping for her soulmate to find it, Lily is pulled into a flirty game of dare that leads her, her potential new love — the cynical Dash (Austin Abrams, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” 2019) — and that little red book all over New York. Directed by sitcom master Fred Savage (“2 Broke Girls”), this cute new series also stars Dante Brown (“Lethal Weapon”) and Agneeta Thacker (“A Light Beneath Their Feet,” 2015).
“The Life Ahead” (2020)
There is nothing but life ahead for Oscar-winner Sophia Loren (“A Special Day,” 1977) as she returns to film at the age of 86 after an 11year hiatus in the new film “The Life Ahead,” coming to Netflix on Friday, Nov. 13. This Italian-language film, originally titled “La vita devanti a sé,” is an adaptation of French author Romain Gary’s 1975 novel “La vie devant soi” and tells the story of Madame Rosa (Loren), a Jewish Holocaust survivor and for-
mer prostitute in a seaside Italian town who looks after the children of her fellow former prostitutes. Her life is changed completely, however, when she takes in a young boy named Momo (Ibrahima Gueye, “Muñeca Negra,” 2019), who had robbed her. This film marks Loren’s third collaboration with her son, director Edoardo Ponti (“Between Strangers,” 2002), and has already been receiving a lot of Oscar buzz for Loren’s role as Madame Rosa. If she wins, this would be Loren’s second Academy Award spanning her seven-decade career of more than 100 films.
“Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” (2020)
Embrace the music and magic of the holiday season with the new family film “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” coming to Netflix on Friday, Nov. 13. Eccentric toymaker Jeronicus Jangle (Academy award winner Forest Whitaker, “The Last King of Scotland,” 2006) has been working on a new invention for three decades, and his miserly boss, who provided him the loan to make it happen, has offered him an ultimatum: either produce the completed toy before Christmas or pay back the massive loan. Already stressed from working under pressure to perfect his creation in time, Jangle’s life is further turned upside down when his trusted apprentice (Keegan-Michael Key, “Key and Peele”) steals the magical new toy. Now, aware of the joy and power surrounding the invention, it is up to Jangle’s equally creative granddaughter, Journey (newcomer Madalen Mills), to get the toy back and save the day. This musical set in the fictional town of Cobbleton features original songs by Grammy winners Philip Lawrence and John Legend and also stars Anika Noni Rose (“The Princess and the Frog,”
2009), Phylicia Rashad (“The Cosby Show”), Hugh Bonneville (“Downton Abbey”) and two-time Grammy-winning artist Ricky Martin.

Now a worldwide beacon of change, this documentary follows Thunberg’s journey as she sails around the world urging citizens of the planet — a planet in crisis — to take action and make a change before it is too late. Featuring footage of her life at home and traveling with her family, as well as her interactions with everyday people, the media and political figures such as former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger and secretary general of the United Nations António Guterres during her quest for change, “I Am Greta” shows the power behind the young woman giving our planet a voice. Nathan Grossman (“Steig Larsson: The Man Who Played with Fire”) directs.

As Eric and Claire spend increasingly more time together, friends and family of the pair begin to get concerned, and both student and teacher are forced to examine the intricacies and consequences of their actions. Despite their small size and their second-class status to the humans inside the house they believe to be gods, these adorable little characters live their lives to the fullest, nicknaming themselves “The Mighty Ones.” Created by Sunil Hall (“Pickle and Peanut”) and Lynne
Unplug from the daily grind and enjoy life with Apple TV+’s newest children’s series, “Doug Unplugs,” coming to the streamer on Friday, Nov. 13. “Inside Pixar”

From classics such as “Toy Story” (1995) and “A Bug’s Life” (1998) to new family favorites like “Coco” (2017) and heartwarming animated shorts like “Geri’s Game,” Pixar has always had a way of capturing the hearts and minds of its audience. This half-hour documentary gives fans of the influential animation company an inside look at the studios and offers up an idea of what it is like to work for Pixar. With
much of the focus on Walt Disney and Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter (“Cars,” 2006), “Inside Pixar” takes viewers on a magical journey that will leave them more connected to their beloved film repertoire than ever before. Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger (“The Pixar Story,” 2007), chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Tom Staggs (“Disney Cruise Line: Behind the Magic,” 2013), and Walt Disney imagineer Kathy Mangum (“The Imagineering Story,” 2019) are also featured.
WHAT’S ON PRIME “Bones”
Dig deep into human motivation and biology with this popular crime drama. All 12 seasons of “Bones” are available to stream now on Prime. Created by “Stargate SG1” writer Hart Hanson, “Bones” follows socially awkward forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennen (Emily Deschanel, “Cold Mountain,” 2003) and her polar-opposite partner, FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), as they put their heads together to solve crimes that are often left with too little forensic evidence for the average crime scene team to crack. While Booth’s emotive and sympathetic take on the crimes often gets in the way of Brennan’s calculating and literal interpretations, the two begin to learn how to see things from the other’s perspective and, ultimately, work better together because of their differences. Having aired a whopping 245-episode series total, “Bones” also stars Michaela Conlin (“The Lincoln Lawyer,” 2011) as forensic artist Angela Montenegro, Tamara Taylor (“Serenity,” 2005) as head of the Jeffersonian Institute’s forensic division Dr. Camille Saroyan, and T.J. Thyne (“How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” 2000) as forensic entomologist Dr. Jack Hodgins.

Effects of the past Season 4 of ‘S.W.A.T.’ looks at 1992 riots
By Rachel Jones TV Media
Season 4 of “S.W.A.T.,” CBS’s popular specialized-police procedural show, was originally scheduled to air midseason but, in mid-July, CBS decided to move it back to its fall programming slot because of filming complications caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic. The good news is that the wait is over. Fans of the eagerly anticipated “S.W.A.T.” will be happy to learn that the new season is set to premiere on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with a two-hour special.
Thankfully, the team itself won’t have changed much when the show returns. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Shemar Moore, “Criminal Minds”), Victor Tan (David Lim, “Quantico”), Dominique Luca (Kenny Johnson, “Bates Motel”) and David “Deacon” Kay (Jay Harrington, “Better off Ted”) are all expected to reappear.
The show, which has gained a very dedicated band of followers throughout its first three seasons, has done so with its attention to real-life events through an action-packed format.
The Season 4 premiere will be no exception to its preferred “echoing real life” approach, highlighting the 1992 L.A. riots and the impact they had on young Hondo — at that time, Hondo (Donald Dash, “Rise”) would have been about 17 years old. His father, the younger Daniel Harrelson Sr. (Rico E. Anderson, “Truth Be Told”), will also be featured.
“S.W.A.T.” will be looking to the past to help determine the team’s future. The 1992 L.A. riots lasted six days and involved thousands of people in Los Angeles County as civil unrest began in the South Central region of the city, following the acquittal of four LAPD officers charged with excessive use of force in the arrest and the beating of Rodney King, and rippled across the metropolis. The incident, which had been videotaped, was subse-
quently aired on TV broadcasts and seen by millions of people worldwide.
While the L.A. riots storyline was planned long before the Black Lives Matter groups began large-scale protests following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, “S.W.A.T.’s” goal to touch on the reality of racism couldn’t be more relevant given the current political climate. This season’s premiere also includes a racist experience for Victor’s mother, and the ongoing plotline will address the concept of generational trauma by examining how the events Hondo witnessed in 1992 have a bearing on his teenage foster son, Darryl (Deshae Frost, “Chiefs,” 2018), in the present day.
Executive producers Aaron Rahsaan Thomas (“Sleepy Hollow”) and Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) put out a public statement in June stating that the show’s team would be “continuing to mine current events in the writing of our upcoming season as we all work towards a fairer, better system.” This statement comes on the heels of Ryan’s 2017 comment that it is “possible to be both pro-police and pro-truth,” claiming that this is what the show has always tried to depict.
As Season 4 progresses, there is also news that a dangerous international crime lord is back in town — can the S.W.A.T. and the CIA put their teams together to bring him to justice? As if that
weren’t enough drama, the trailer shows heated protests, maskclad characters and danger that could shut down the city, not to mention Hondo’s haunting reminder that if we want to see change, we need to be the change.
One storyline that fans are eagerly awaiting in the upcoming season is that of Tan (Lim) and Bonnie (Karissa Lee Staples, “The Lottery”), who finally got engaged near the end of Season 3. Can Bonnie really handle the stress of Tan’s job?
Interestingly, the show’s cast initially trained with real S.W.A.T. officers and, to maintain credibility, the show frequently consults directly with police and S.W.A.T. advisers. Despite this, there has
been some debate among fans — particularly those with a background in law enforcement — as to the accuracy of the police and S.W.A.T. team’s behavior in the show.
Actual police procedure, of course, is much more complicated than the average person realizes, and it would be almost impossible for any show to document it perfectly. While the show, by its very nature, does take liberties for the sake of entertainment, every inaccurate detail can really distract from the storyline — especially for viewers with a background in law enforcement. Despite this, many of the show’s fans remain hopeful that Season 4 will bring a new level of realism. Others, however, are not so
keen on that approach, preferring that the series stick to providing entertainment over authenticity.
Perhaps Ryan was thinking about “S.W.A.T.’s” authenticityseeking fans in 2017 when he said that he felt that it was possible for television to “tell a story about what works about the system and what doesn’t work about the system.” He then added: “You may watch and think we failed, but the honor is in the attempt.”
Fans of this Primetime Emmynominated show have a lot to look forward to this season as the series looks to history for answers. Don’t miss the Season 4 premiere of “S.W.A.T.,” airing Wednesday, Nov. 11, on CBS.
