‘The Neighborhood’ tackles racism head-on
By Rachel Jones TV Media
The Season 3 premiere of the hit show “The Neighborhood” is airing Monday, Nov. 16, on CBS. And, if you haven’t seen it yet, the premise is simple but hilarious.
A wholesome, outgoing, white, midwestern family moves from their friendly part of the country to settle in a rough-around-the-edges, historically Black neighborhood in Los Angeles. Hearing that his new neighbors, the Johnsons, have just moved in, Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer, “The Soul Man”) resolves to welcome the family. What he wasn’t expecting, however, was to meet an overly friendly white man on the other side of the door. While the color of their skin didn’t initially strike the Johnsons as a problem, they quickly learn that not everyone in their new neighborhood has the same experiences and perceptions of the world as they do. As the two families work together to find a common ground, a series of misunderstandings, suspicions and a healthy dose of perspective await them.
Greenfield, “New Girl”) and his wife, Gemma (Beth Behrs, “2 Broke Girls”), may be far friendlier than what their new neighbors are com fortable with, but Dave, given his line of work as a professional medi
ator, simply doesn’t see the racial differences as a problem. Resolved to navigate his way through any problems that come up, Dave quickly learns through an immersive experience that life isn’t quite as simple for others as it has proven to be for him.
Fans of the show will be excited to know that all “The Neighborhood’s’” main characters are expected to return for the upcoming new season. Not only are they all coming back, but Calvin and his wife, Tina (Tichina Arnold, “Ev erybody Hates Chris”), have
or”), and Dave and Gemma’s son, Grover (Hank Greenspan, “13 Reasons Why”), which helps to add a tone of generational complexity as we see how age, upbringing and life experience really can make a difference on a person’s perspective.
Tackling many tough themes — first and foremost being racism and reverse racism — the show examines exactly what it means to “belong.” “The Neighborhood” takes
er and our often-overlooked and under-considered biases. But make no mistake, this series is definitely a comedy.
In the Season 3 premiere, the Butlers and the Johnsons unite stronger than ever when a member of their community is the victim of racial injustice. The show’s creator and showrunner, Jim Reynolds (“The Big Bang Theory”), was recently quoted as saying, “We really have a responsibility to use our platform to say something — both to validate and honor the experiences of some of our audience, while also trying to give insight to

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX
“The Crown” Season 4
Treat yourself like royalty and tune in to Season 4 of “The Crown,” debuting Sunday, Nov. 15, on Netflix. Nominated for over 170 awards and winning 65 — three of which were Golden Globes — “The Crown” tells a dramatized version of the story of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding in 1947 up to the present day. Starring Claire Foy (“The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” 2018), Olivia Coleman (“The Favourite,” 2018) and Imelda Staunton (“Downton Abbey,” 2019) as Queen Elizabeth II through various stages of her life, this biographical drama series has become known for its attention to detail with respect to the costumes and set design, as well as, of course, the superb acting. Season 4 will focus on the time period between 1977 and 1990 and will introduce Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki (“The Great Gatsby,” 2013) in the role of Lady Diana Spencer — something many fans have been waiting years for. Another notable character joining the plot this year will be Britain’s notorious “Iron Lady,” Prime Minister Margaret “Maggie” Thatcher (Gillian Anderson, “The X-Files”) — there is even the very likely possibility that we will get to meet princes William and Harry this season, given that both of their births fall within Season 4’s timeframe. Created by writer/producer/ actor Peter Morgan (“Frost/Nixon,” 2008), this series is sure to have you
feeling a part of history. Jonathan Pryce (“The Two Popes,” 2019) and Helena Bonham-Carter (“The King’s Speech,” 2010) also star.
“The Princess Switch: Switched Again” (2020) Lose yourself in the lookalike magic of “The Princess Switch: Switched Again,” coming to Netflix on Thursday, Nov. 19. Following the success of the first Princess Switch franchise film — in which Stacy, a Chicagoarea baker, and Lady Margaret, the royally acquainted fiancée of Belgravia’s prince (both played à la “Parent Trap” by Vanessa Hudgens, “Spring Breakers,” 2012) switch lives for two days when they meet around the time of a baking competition — this sequel follows Stacy and Margaret as they switch places once again. This time, when Margaret unexpectedly inherits the throne to Montenaro and hits troubled waters with her beau, Kevin (Nick Sagar, “Queen of the South”), Stacy, now the Princess of Belgravia,
Outer Space” (1988) fame — they have been working tirelessly ever since to turn it into a stop-motion animated film. Now, five years later, they are releasing their 30-minute special on Netflix with the help of Hollywood heavyweight Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” 2008) in the role of executive producer. Sure to be an adorable little tale of the spirit of the season, “Alien Xmas” voice-stars Dee Bradley Baker (“American Dad”), Barbara Goodson (“Forest of Piano”), Keythe Farley (“Adventure Time”) and Jessica Gee-George (“Zak Storm”).
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU “Animaniacs”
steps in to help before (you guessed it!) a third doppelgänger threatens to ruin everything. This second film in the franchise is, like the first, directed by Mike Rohl (“When Calls the Heart”), and the premise for both films is an extrapolation of the basis of Mark Twain’s 1881 novel “The Prince and the Pauper.” Suanne Braun (“Starhyke”) and Mark Fleischmann (“Wolfblood”) also star.
“Alien Xmas” (2020) Have an out-of-this-world Christmas this year with “Alien Xmas,” coming to Netflix on Friday, Nov. 20. When kleptomaniac aliens descend to Earth and try to steal away its gravity, the only thing able to save the planet from certain chaos is the spirit of Christmas ... and a tiny extraterrestrial named X. Based on a 2015 story book of the same name by Jim Strain (“Jumanji,” 1995) and Stephen and Charles Chiodo — two of the three Bronx-born brothers of “Killer Klowns from
Calling all cartoon-heads, ‘90s babies and Fanimaniacs! The animated-creature sensation “The Animaniacs” has risen from the dead and is coming directly to Hulu on Friday, Nov. 20. The Tom Ruegger (“Pinky and the Brain”) classic series is getting a long-overdue reboot, but don’t worry: the creator has no plan to gloss over the near-quartercentury-long hiatus the show has taken. In this new iteration of the zany, slapstick comedy adventure series, main characters Yakko, Wakko and Dot are fully aware that they’ve been in lockdown mode for the past 22 years ... a feeling some of us might share with the Animaniacs at this point. The trio will discover new trends from Beyoncé to social media, learn the meaning of the term “catfishing” and get up to plenty of the same antics for which we know and love them. And, yes, get ready to have that theme song stuck in your head once again! Original voice actors Rob Paulsen (“Darkwing Duck”), Jess Harnell (“Elena of Avalor”) and Tress MacNeille (“Futurama”) will be reprising their roles as Yakko, Wakko and Dot, respectively, while Frank Welker (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) will once again step into his many roles — one of which is Ralph the Guard.
WHAT’S NEW ON DISNEY+
“The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse”
Celebrate Mickey’s birthday this year with an all-new series debuting on Disney+. “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” premieres Wednesday, Nov. 18, on the company’s streaming service. From the team behind the Disney Channel’s Emmy-winning “Mickey Mouse” animated shorts, this new series will release two shorts
every Friday beginning on Nov. 27, following its Nov. 18 premiere. These shorts — each lasting seven minutes — will see all of the classic characters, from Mickey and Minnie to Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto, return for a myriad of laughter-sparking slapstick and situational comedy and magical adventures that span decades and transcend age. Fun for the whole family, this modern series returns to a classic Mickey artwork style that is reminiscent of the famed mouse’s humble beginnings back in 1928. Created by Paul Rudish (“Dexter’s Laboratory”) and showcasing new music from “Veep” composer Christopher Willis, this 10-episode season features the voices of Chris Diamantopoulos (“Silicon Valley”), Tress MacNielle (“The Animaniacs”), Tony Anselmo (“Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” 1988), Kaitlyn Robrock (“Amphibia”) and Bill Farmer (“Space Jam,” 1996). Fans of the show can also expect 10 more shorts to be released come summer of 2021.
“The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special” (2020)
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away ... there was a Lego movie. OK, so it’s a new movie and it’s on Disney+, but you get the point. Tune in to Disney’s streaming platform on Tuesday, Nov. 17, for the premiere of its new holiday film, “The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special.” In this holiday special, Rey (played by Daisy Ridley in “Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens,” 2015) sets off on a solo adventure to gain a deeper knowledge of The Force while her friends prepare for Life Day back home. When she stumbles upon a mysterious temple along the way, Rey is launched into a cross-timeline journey. Now, the only question is: will she make it back in time for Life Day? Garnering inspiration from a highly unpopular Star Wars holiday
special from 1978, this 45-minute Lego film special was written by Lego Star Wars veteran David Shayne (“Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures”) and will be sure to delight fans of the franchise with its action and comedy. While it is unclear whether Daisy Ridley will be returning to her role as Rey, confirmed returning cast members include Matt Lanter (“Vampires Suck,” 2010) as Anakin Skywalker, James Arnold Taylor (“TMNT,” 2007) as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kelly Marie Tran (“Sorry for Your Loss”) as Rose Tico, and Billy Dee Williams (“The Lego Batman Movie,” 2017) as Lando Calrissian.
WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME
“Christmas Crush” (2019) Be careful what you wish for this holiday season because you just might get ... your next-door neighbor? Inject a little fun-loving romance into your schedule on Sunday, Nov. 15, as “Christmas Crush” joins the Prime roster. When Addie (Cindy Sampson, “Private Eyes”), under the influence of the holiday spirit and an ill-guided piece of advice from a friend in her building, wishes that her neighbor would fall in love with her, her wish comes true ... sort of. Failing to specify which neighbor — she meant the cute, “normal” one named Sam (Robin Dunne, “Just Friends,” 2005) — she accidentally causes her new and rather over-the-top neighbor Pete (Chris Violette, “Star Trek: Discovery”) to fall head over heels in love with her. Never intending this to be the case, and still trying to make things work with Sam, Addie must find a way to break the Christmas love spell and return her life — and Pete’s — to the way it was intended to be. Written by holiday filmmaker John Burd (“Snowmance,” 2017), “Christmas Crush” was directed by Marita Grabiak (“Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” 1991).

A scene from “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse”
takes its final bow
By Kyla Brewer TV Media
Every so often, a TV show connects with viewers in a way that transcends typical prime-time success. While ratings are, of course, still important and critical praise is always nice, some series and their stars are as loyal to their fans as their fans are to them. One such special relationship is about to come to a bittersweet end, and TV viewers will have a front-row seat.
Jared Padalecki (“Gilmore Girls”) and Jensen Ackles (“Days of Our Lives”) star as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester in the series finale of “Supernatural,” airing Thursday, Nov. 19, on CW. Right before the finale, the one-hour special “Supernatural: The Long Road Home” will take a look at all 15 seasons of the series, which has left its mark in television history as the longest-running U.S. live-action fantasy series.
When the show first debuted on now defunct network The WB in September 2005, before moving to CW the following season, Sam and Dean set out in search of their father, John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, “The Walking Dead”), who’d been hunting demons and supernatural creatures since an evil entity took the life of Sam and Dean’s mother. Determined to find their missing dad, the brothers criss-cross the country in their trusty ‘67 Chevy Impala, saving people and battling the paranormal along the way. While they’ve encountered plenty of foes during their adventures, they’ve also made many allies, including the angel Castiel (Misha Collins, “24”).
Over the years, “Supernatural” has developed a fiercely loyal following, and it will be difficult for many of those fans to see the show go. Just how to say goodbye has been the subject of speculation since Padalecki, Ackles and Collins confirmed that Season 15 would be the show’s last way back in March 2019. However, while the details of the series finale have been guarded so far, Padalecki has said the episode is his favorite.
“I’d be lying if I tried to posit that I hadn’t thought many times about how I want this to end up,” Padalecki said during a virtual panel for the show at this year’s PaleyFest NY, according to Deadline. “I guess I could have seen it ending a slew of different ways, but now that it’s all said and done, I couldn’t be more pleased with the way it turned out.”
The series finale was originally slated to air in May 2020, but, like just about every other major North American television production, it was forced into a hiatus in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the final few episodes of the 20-episode 15th season returned to the airwaves on Thursday, Oct. 8. The two final episodes of the
show had not been filmed by the time production was shut down, but they managed to get things back up and running in Vancouver in August. Of course, there were plenty of precautions in place to ensure the health and safety of everyone in the cast and crew, such as physical distancing, wearing masks and getting frequent COVID-19 tests.
The fact that they were able to return to filming was a lucky break for fans, who will find out what happens when Team Free Will faces off against God himself, aka Chuck (Rob Benedict, “Felicity”). While things may have been different behind the scenes, the scripts for the final two episodes remained fairly unchanged by the
circumstances surrounding the pandemic. As the series winds down, fans will also be happy to know that they’ll see the return of some familiar faces from seasons past. Showrunner Andrew Dabb has confirmed that tech-savvy nerd Charlie Bradbury (Felicia Day, “The Guild”) will make an appearance, as will Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Brianna Buckmaster, “Arrow”), among others.
“Supernatural” may have a huge cult following now, but the road to success wasn’t completely smooth for the series. Ratings for the first few seasons were respectable but not stellar, despite its fans having always been enthusiastic and loyal. It’s became so popular that it has inspired novels, seeming-
ly endless fan fiction, merchandise, a comic book series and even a Japanese anime series.
As for whether there might be more of something “Supernatural” in the works — or at least something pertaining to that universe — fans shouldn’t hold their breath.
While the door remains open, previous attempts at spinoffs haven’t been successful. Despite getting backdoor pilots during seasons 9 and 13, respectively, neither “Supernatural: Bloodlines” nor “Wayward Sisters” were picked up by the network.
For now, fans will have to accept the bittersweet end of the long-running fantasy series. It will likely be an emotional time for many, including the cast.
“The very final moment, the very final day, it was happy tears,” Ackles explained during the PaleyFest NY panel. “[It was] that feeling you get when you know you’ve done something that you’ll be proud of for the rest of your life.”
There’s no question that “Supernatural” is one of those rare shows that connects with audiences in such a way that the characters are not mere players in a story but become something akin to friends. Don’t miss your chance to say goodbye to the Winchesters in the series finale of “Supernatural,” airing Thursday, Nov. 19, on CW. And before you do, be sure to take an hour to reminisce about the past 15 seasons with “Supernatural: The Long Road Home.”
