Fierce fashion graces post-war Paris in ‘The Collection’
By Kat Mulligan TV MediaPost-war Paris becomes the hub of French fashion revival in the “Masterpiece Classic” series “The Collection,” premiering Sunday, Oct. 8, on PBS. The city’s wealthy elites long for a way to elevate the nation’s global standing, and they find a promising solution in Paul Sabine Couture.
The series begins in February of 1947, and centers around the Sabine fashion house, led by brothers Paul (Richard Coyle, “Pusher,” 2012) and Claude (Tom Riley, “Da Vinci’s Demons”). While the creative talent lies within the eccentric and introverted Claude, it is Paul’s business savvy and influence that have the family name circulating among high-level Parisians and fashionistas worldwide.
The family is rounded out by Paul’s charmingly blunt American wife, Helen (Mamie Gummer, “Side Effects,” 2013), and the steadfast matriarch, Yvette (Frances de la Tour, “Outlander”). Collectively, they do what’s necessary to further the business, all the while attempting to suppress any rumors or scandals that might surface to threaten their growing brand.
When a notable man, considered the city’s wealthiest, comes to Paul Sabine Couture looking to revitalize Paris’s international influence, the brothers are initially dismissed for a
lack of ingenuity. Luckily, an optimistic American photographer, Billy Novak (Max Deacon, “The Call Up,” 2016), stumbles upon the perfect solution after a touching encounter with a stunning young seamstress from the Sabines’ own atelier, named Nina (Jenna Thiam, “Daydreams,” 2016). An innocent request leads to the development of images that capture the essence of the fashion house: ordinary women transformed by extraordinary craftsmanship and design.
While there is no real Paul Sabine Couture for writer and creator Oliver Goldstick to pull from, the series is clearly influenced by the real-life rumors and exploits of established brands. Nods to Dior and Chanel can be felt in the dramatic events that unfold, along with the innovations established by these houses in creating a new fashion sense for France. Beyond subtle tributes,
showrunners enlisted the costume expertise of designers Chattoune & Fab to develop a collection for Paul Sabine Couture. The duo, renowned for its innovative creations in costume design, crafted more than 30 handmade dresses for the fictional fashion house’s line, along with dressing the entire cast.
What results is a unique blend of modern tailoring and 1940s esthetic — something that actor Riley grew to celebrate. In preparation for his role as Claude, Riley told TV Drama Weekly that he attended a few fashion shows. While there, he discovered that fashion was “more than just something that’s thrown away every season” and came to appreciate that “there is a real craft … an art” to the intricate work of fashion design.
The artistic spirit is what propels Claude, though his wavering confidence and sporadic devotion to his work make promoting the family business quite the challenge for his brother. The family dynamics truly take precedent in “The Collection,” as Paul puts the family’s reputation above all else, often suppressing the defiance of moral and societal norms in order to protect the family’s name. Claude doesn’t make this easy for Paul, as he struggles, in Riley’s words, with being “such a tormented little individual.”

‘Chopped,’ Alton style: Alton Brown enters the ‘Chopped’ kitchen
By Andrew Warren TV MediaAmong culinary television’s many star-studded personalities, there’s really no one like Alton Brown. The man is a legend in some fan circles, and it’s no wonder why. While other TV chefs happily share their advice on how to prepare an ingredient, Alton would much rather share the underlying science and reasoning behind all things culinary — the why. Of course, his distinct, kooky personality doesn’t hurt his case, either.
Well, the contestants for Food Network’s next “Chopped” tournament had better be brushing up on their culinary science.
“Chopped: Alton’s Challenge” premieres Tuesday, Oct. 10, with
the man himself not only sitting at the judges table but also setting the challenges themselves.
In the first episode of the culinary contest, Alton is joined at the judges table by “Chopped” regulars Amanda Freitag and Alex Guarnaschelli, along with host Ted Allen. The three “Chopped” veterans have seen more than their fair share of interesting ingredient challenges in the “Chopped” kitchen, but Alton’s maniacal mind still has some surprises in store.
For the appetizer round, the four hopeful contestants must understand the mad science of champagne and fermentation. After a chef is sent packing by the judges, it’s on to the entrée round with a really weird and stringy Japanese specialty hiding in the basket of mystery ingredients. It’s
the dessert challenge that truly tests the cooking mettle of the chefs, though, when they find a highly unusual cake lurking in the basket.
Each week, four new chefs enter the “Chopped” kitchen, with only one remaining at the end. In the tournament’s grand finale Tuesday, Nov. 7, the four champions return to face off against each other for the ultimate $50,000 prize. To earn that payday, though, they have to endure Alton’s most diabolical
Cooking this week
challenges yet: dehydration, fermentation, smoke and molecular gastronomy are all on the menu, and with that kind of money on the line, the “Chopped” judges expect nothing short of perfection.
Alton Brown knows food inside, outside and on sides that most people didn’t even know existed — and contestants in “Chopped: Alton’s Challenge” had better hope that they do, too. The tournament premieres Tuesday, Oct. 10, on Food Network.

No bones about it David Boreanaz stands out in ‘SEAL Team’
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaAccording to the old saying, you can’t keep a good man down, and David Boreanaz (“Bones”) seems to be one of a few good men on television these days. The actor has risen to fame, thanks to his roles as rugged, brawny types, and he’s back as the toughest of the tough: a Navy SEAL.
Boreanaz stars as Jason Hayes, the leader of an elite unit of Tier One Navy SEALs who take on extremely dangerous missions all over the world in “SEAL Team,” airing Wednesday, Oct. 11, on CBS. With more than a dozen deployments under his belt, Hayes is nothing if not respected among his peers, but his personal life has suffered as a result of his commitment to his work. The ensemble drama follows Hayes, his colleagues and their loved ones as they struggle with the challenges of military life.
In a promo for the series, Boreanaz talked about why the new action drama is so appealing.
“What’s really interesting about this show is that it allows the audience to see what goes on behind these ops, what goes on in these guys’ normal lives,” he said.
Executive producer Benjamin Cavell (“Justified”) also explained that real veterans of such Navy SEAL units have given them insight into their lives, while his fellow executive producer and showrunner Ed Redlich (“Unforgettable”) called such soldiers the “greatest heroes we have.”
“SEAL Team” also co-stars Neil Brown Jr. (“The Walking Dead”) as Ray, Hayes’ right-hand man and the most experienced operator on the team. As a result of years of working together, Ray and Hayes share an effortless rapport. “CSI: NY” alum A.J. Buckley returns to CBS as Sonny in “SEAL Team.” Although he is an exceptional and loyal soldier now, Sonny has a checkered past and still battles self-destructive tendencies. The cast also includes Max Thieriot (“Bates Motel”) as multilingual second-generation SEAL Clay Spenser, who’s eagerly undergoing
further training in the hopes of joining the Tier One team.
Jessica Paré (“Mad Men”) stars as CIA analyst Mandy Ellis, who keeps the team on its toes as she roots out evil in the hopes of taking down terrorists. Toni Trucks (“Franklin & Bash”) serves as the team’s “Q” as Davis, a no-nonsense logistics officer responsible for getting the SEALs the necessary gear for each mission. Other notables appearing in the show’s rookie season include Michaela McManus (“Aquarius”) as Alana Hayes, Parisa Fakhri (“Dwelling”) as Naima, Judd Lormand (“The Hunger Games,” 2012) as Lt. Cmdr.
Eric Blackburn and Michael Rooker (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” 2014) as Big Chief.
The team’s unwavering patriotism and dedication to their clandestine missions keep citizens safe, often at the cost of their personal lives.
Hayes leads the tight-knit crew into the mouth of danger and strives to get everyone home to their families safely. It’s a fitting role for Boreanaz, who’s led several prime-time series to success in the past 20 years. After paying his dues as a production assistant and extra, the actor got his big break when he was cast as Angel in the cult hit
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in 1997. He appeared as the cursed vampire throughout the series, and earned his own spinoff, “Angel,” which premiered in 1999 and ran until 2004.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Boreanaz was cast in another major network series within a year, taking on the leading role of Seeley Booth in Fox’s “Bones” opposite Emily Deschanel (“Rose Red”) in 2005. The role earned him nominations for both a People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Drama Actor and a Teen Choice Award in the Choice TV Actor: Drama category. Believe it or not, Boreanaz wasn’t originally tapped for the
role of Hayes, though it seems tailor made for him. He stepped in after original star Jim Caviezel (“Person of Interest”) parted ways with CBS over creative differences. As “Bones” wound down, “SEAL Team” producers snatched up Boreanaz, who was on this pilot season’s “hot list” of leading men — not surprising given his ability to portray both strength and vulnerability. His portrayal of Hayes requires both as he not only tackles dangerous clandestine missions, but also deals with the mental and emotional toll of his chosen line of work, which has left him with PTSD.
The premise has promise and the show has landed on many critics’ “must watch” lists along with other new military dramas such as NBC’s “The Brave,” starring Mike Vogel (“Cloverfield,” 2008) and Anne Heche (“Six Days Seven Nights,” 1998), and CW’s “Valor,” starring Christina Ochoa (“Animal Kingdom”). It remains to be seen whether Boreanaz will have the Midas touch for his latest series, but in the meantime, millions of his “Angel” and “Bones” fans will be watching. Check out all of the riveting action in a new episode of “SEAL Team,” airing Wednesday, Oct. 11, on CBS.
