‘Fear the Walking Dead’ teases major character death
By Rachel Jones TV MediaGreat news for zombie fans! A new season of the popular spinoff series “Fear the Walking Dead” is premiering Sunday, Oct. 11, on AMC. The station announced the news at a virtual Comic-Con and played a teaser for Season 6 partway through Season 5.
Despite “The Walking Dead” coming out first, “Fear the Walking Dead” is actually the prequel. It follows a family in Los Angeles at the beginning of the zombie outbreak, who must now forget their old lives and focus on survival. “The Walking Dead” is based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore that began in 2003. “Fear the Walking Dead” continues in the same tradition as the comics and the original series, but this time takes place between Los Angeles, Mexico and Texas. Season 6 has already promised drama and even more crossovers. In a teaser posted to the show’s of ficial Twitter account, we see Sher ry (Christine Evangelista, “The Ar rangement”) and Dwight (Austin Amelio, “Mercy Black,” 2019), both crossover characters from “The Walking Dead.” Could this mean a reunion? The tweet is cap tioned, “Is Sherry how Dwight re members her?”
We know Dwight went through a lot of personal growth in Season 5 and has already reunited with Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey, “The 100”) and Charlie (Alexa Nisenson, “Summer Camp Island”). What could this mean for the changes that Sherry has gone through?
The final episode of last season was already packed with drama. John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt, “12 Years a Slave,” 2013) and June (Jenna Elfman, “Friends with Benefits,” 2011) are finally married, Grace (Karen David, “Galavant”) is pregnant, Virginia (Colby Minifie, “The Boys”) shoots Morgan Jones (Lennie James, “Sahara,” 2005) and leaves him for the Walkers, and Dwight is hallucinating Sherry’s voice.
Now, the new trailer shows a glimpse of what’s to come in the
me, what we were doing out here, it wasn’t just about doing right. We fought for the future. We made the hard call for all of us. If you’re listening to me, live. All of you, if you can hear me, just live.” It was a bittersweet ending for fans, who were left unsure as to whether he even made it out alive.
The trailer has little audio aside from this, but ends with another radio call from someone ominously asking about what happened to Morgan. Immediately following is the image of a box, conveniently the size of a head, labeled “Morgan Jones.” We see one eye (presumably Morgan’s) snap open, bright red.
Morgan has made it through all of “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead” to this point, but at the end of Season 5, it wasn’t
wards and helping people,” said showrunner Andrew Chambliss (“Once Upon a Time”).
Season 5 began with a plane crash and the group being lured away from their denim-factory base. They find themselves in a high radiation area, meeting two new kids whom Alicia saves from Walkers while channeling her pain from losing family members into violence. They then begin driving and find a roadblock made of Walkers. When they finally stop running, the local Walkers turn out to be radioactive and even more dangerous to be near. They finally begin to see a way out by plotting out the roadblock locations with help from Dwight — who came into the picture ready to end his life because he knew he would never see his wife again. Throughout the season, Dwight’s personal transformation makes it appear as though, at times, he may find her after all.
Part of the way through Season 5, Dwight leaves on a mission to find airplane parts to help repair the damage from the crash at the beginning of the season, ultimately lending a more hopeful tone to the series as the group finally works to overcome their relentless necessity to fight or flee. They focus on survival — which is a breakthrough for many characters, such as Morgan, who finally admits to Luciana (Danay Garcia, “Prison Break”) that he “felt something” at the mall carousel (a major moment for such a stubborn character).

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” (2020)
Be a part of the action as “the whole world is watching” the events of the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention unfold in “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” a thrilling new film coming to Netflix on Friday, Oct. 16. From film giant Aaron Sorkin (“A Few Good Men,” 1992) comes the riveting true story of the seven people who stood trial for various crimes surrounding the Vietnam War protests at the DNC in Illinois’ largest city in the late 1960s. Following the assassinations of human rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. in April and Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy in June of that year, these riots set the stage for some of the United States’ lengthiest and most grueling court proceedings. With acclaimed actor Joseph Gordon Levitt (“50/50,” 2011) in the role of leading prosecutor Richard Schultz, the film also stars Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Spy”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything,” 2014) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Aquaman,” 2018) as the legendary Black Panther Party co-founder, Bobby Seale.
“A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” (2020)
Work just doesn’t pay well enough for first-time babysitter
Kelly Ferguson (Tamara Smart, “The Worst Witch”) in “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting,” coming to Netflix on Wednesday, Oct 14. When the child she is tasked with minding (Ian Ho, “Blue’s Clues & You”) is kidnapped by the boogeyman, Kelly teams up with an underground society of babysitters who go to the ends of the earth to protect children from a realm of monsters threatening their safety. This film is based on the first novel in Joe Ballarini’s adolescent-fiction trilogy and is tasked with continuing the babysitter-film alliance between Netflix and Walden Media, the company that brought us the recent series “The Baby-Sitters Club.” Also starring Indya Moore (“Queen & Slim,” 2019), Oona Laurence (“The Beguiled,” 2017), Momona Tamada (“To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You,” 2020) and everyone’s favorite Harry Potter villain, Tom Felton, this quirky new action flick is directed by the award-winning Rachel Talalay (“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”).
“Grand Army”
Life is anything but easy for the students of the largest high school in Brooklyn, N.Y. in this new series, coming to Netflix on Oct. 16. “Grand Army,” a screen adaptation of veteran high school teacher and playwright Katie Cappiello’s 2013 play “Slut,” follows the life of five teenagers struggling to grapple with the
politics surrounding sexuality, race, economics and society at large as they navigate the events of their day-to-day life in one of New York City’s most iconic boroughs. “House of Cards” producers Beau Willimon and Joshua Donen have been brought on board as part of the production team alongside Cappiello herself, and the first season will star Odessa A’zion (“Fam”), Maliq Johnson (“When They See Us”), Amir Bageria (“Degrassi: Next Class”), Amalia Yoo (“J Doe”) and newcomer Odley Jean as the central characters.
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU “Helstrom”
Get ready for a family reunion like no other in the action-packed series “Marvel’s Helstrom,” coming exclusively to Hulu on Friday, Oct. 16. The children of an infamous and terrifying serial killer, Ana (Sydney Lemmon, “Velvet Buzzsaw,” 2019) and Daimon (Tom Austen, “The Royals”) Helstrom are forced to deal with their own complicated relationship, their ties to their sinister mother and their unique skills (many of them supernatural) as they hunt down and eliminate some of humanity’s worst offenders. The show was created by Emmy-nominated producer Paul Zbyszewski, of “Lost” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” fame, and stars Alain Uy (“True Detective”), Robert Wisdom (“Supernatural”), Elizabeth Marvel (“Burn After Reading,” 2008) and Ariana Guerra (“Five Feet Apart,” 2019) in supporting roles.
WHAT’S NEW ON DISNEY+
“Clouds” (2020)
Get inspired by “Clouds” this Friday, Oct. 16, on Disney+. This heartwarming cinematic journey, based on Laura Sobiech’s memoir “Fly a Little Higher,” tells the story of her son, Zach (portrayed by Fin Argus, “Total Eclipse”), and his rise to musical fame while battling a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer at the age of 17. The film was adapted for the screen by Kara Holden (“Carrie Pilby,” 2016) and directed and produced by Wayfarer Studios co-founder and “Jane the Virgin” leading man, Justin Baldoni. Starring Sabrina Carpenter (“The Hate U Give,” 2018), Madison Iseman (“Jumanji: The Next Level,” 2019) and Thomas Everett Scott (“Because I Said So,” 2007) in supporting roles, Neve Campbell (“Scream,” 1996) takes on the honored challenge of playing Zach’s caring mother and author of the book that started it all.

Produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas (“Baywatch,” 2017) and Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum (“Get Out,” 2017), and directed by the Dassani twins, Rajeev and Elan (“Jinn,” 2019), “Evil Eye” also stars The Matrix franchise’s Rama-Kandra (Bernard White).
“Nocturne” (2020)

Disney brings us this series in conjunction with National Geographic and Blink Films – the producers behind the Animal Planet shows “Meet the Penguins” and “Meet the Orangutans” – and, as with most chimp-centric productions, there is sure to be no shortage of playfulness, heartfelt emotion and food fights.

Against all odds ‘The Bachelorette’ returns to prime time
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaIt’s been a tumultuous year, to say the least. But as time goes by, people are finding ways to move forward in life and, apparently, in love. While the television industry has been hit hard by extensive shutdowns due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, some shows have bounced back more quickly, finding innovative ways to get things up and running again. One of these shows is about to return to the screen, much to the delight of its fans, Bachelor Nation.
Clare Crawley begins what will be a romantic journey full of shocking twists and turns as she meets 31 potential suitors in the Season 16 premiere of “The Bachelorette,” airing Tuesday, Oct. 13, on ABC. This marks the 16th season of the romance reality TV show, hosted, once again, by Chris Harrison.
A spinoff of ABC’s “The Bachelor,” the program has been titillating reality TV fans since its premiere in 2003. Typically, the chosen Bachelorette meets a variety of attractive and successful men in the hopes of making a lasting love connection. As the season progresses, cameras tag along as she dates each of the men and decides which ones she wants to get to know better. Those men receive roses during the Rose Ceremony at the end of each episode, while the other men are sent packing. The number of suitors dwindles over the course of the season until there are only two left and the Bachelorette must make her final choice.
That is how things are supposed to go, but this season has not exactly followed the script. Things started out in the usual way when ABC announced that Crawley would be the newest star of “The Bachelorette” on the March 2 edition of “Good Morning America.” Viewers first met Crawley when she appeared as one of the potential love matches for Juan Pablo Galavis on Season 18 of “The Bachelor.” She was all set to start work on “The Bachelorette” when Warner Bros. Television Group, which produces “The Bachelorette,” announced on March 13
that it would be shutting down production on all of its shows due to COVID-19 concerns.
“Talk about the most dramatic season ever,” Crawley wrote on her Instagram page at the time, seemingly undaunted. She went on to say: “We are taking it day by day and even hour by hour as this is so unpredictable.”
Eventually, producers figured out how to safely get things running again, and the show became the first major TV program to restart production in the United States when it began filming in July. The cast and crew relocated everything to the lavish La Quinta
Resort & Club in California, which was not open to the public at the time. They all faced a quarantine period of 14 days and were subjected to COVID-19 tests and temperature checks so that filming could continue as they all set up camp at the resort.
Host Harrison was no exception to the rules. He even had to quarantine again in August after dropping his son off in Texas for university. During that time, former Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher (Season 12) took over as a temporary host.
But, believe it or not, a delay in filming, a guest host, global pandemic precautions and a new set-
ting are not all that’s new. This season promises to be like no other. Rumor has it that, for the first time in “Bachelorette” history, there will be a handover as a new Bachelorette steps in to replace Crawley sometime over the course of the season. As the story goes, one of Crawley’s potential suitors contacted her during the shutdown and they started chatting. By the time the show was back up and running, they were reportedly already falling in love and none of the other participants stood a chance.
Bachelor Nation fans have been speculating that the “new” new
Bachelorette will be Tayshia Adams, who appeared in Season 23 of “The Bachelor” opposite Colton Underwood in 2019. While there has been no official word on this from the production company or the network, plenty of entertainment news sources, including Us and People, have been buzzing about Adams showing up at the resort where this season was filmed. This could be a banner year for the show’s ratings as TV fans look for new content to watch. With so many conventional productions struggling to find footing and get up and running, “The Bachelor-
ette” might have the edge, thanks to the fact that producers found a way to navigate the COVID-19 restrictions so quickly. That quick thinking could really pay off for the show, which has seen a slow decline in ratings over the past several seasons.
Regardless of what happens, this season of “The Bachelorette” is sure to be entertaining. Even those fans who’ve been with the show from the very beginning may be shocked by the 16th season’s ups and downs. Don’t miss the Season 16 premiere of “The Bachelorette,” airing Tuesday, Oct. 13, on ABC.
